With autumn days quickly approaching, fall is the idyllic time to celebrate the most brilliant hues and outdoor beauty Tennessee has to offer. Pile on the fall fun and experience the Volunteer State’s sprawling rainbow of autumn colors with these Instagram-worthy leaf-peeping spots, relaxing hikes, scenic drives and hidden outdoor treasures.
Tennessee’s stunning fall foliage is credited to its diverse tree species. Visitors from all over come to experience the season’s kaleidoscope of colors, including bright oranges, vibrant yellows, and deep reds. Due to the state’s changing topography, each region of the state experiences peak colors at varying times. To view the best times to catch fall foliage, visit TNVacation.com’s leaf-peeping guide at TnVacation.com/articles/ when-autumn-starts-tennessee.
Experience Fall’s Many Book of Colors with Tennessee Tourism’s Colorblind Viewfinders
Fall often brings sweater weather, pumpkin spice lattes and the colorful splendor of autumn leaves. Tennessee Tourism realized that many with red-green color deficiency often can’t experience the full bloom of fall colors. In 2017, the state installed EnChroma lenses engineered with spectral lens technology so that people with color blindness could participate and share the true colors of fall. Now, those wishing to experience Tennessee’s vibrant colors can find Colorblind Viewfinders at destinations such as Chickasaw State Park, Ruby Falls, I-26 Westbound Scenic Overlook and more.
Feel the Crunch of Fallen Leaves with these Fall Hikes
Escape into delightful fall foliage at one of Tennessee’s 56 state parks, which all offer free admission for hiking, kayaking, rafting, paddleboarding, boating and other outdoor adventures. Get lost in the rainbow of orange, red and yellows in Roan Mountain State Park’s 2,000 acres of beautiful forest and sprawling ridges, view unique rock formations, colorful
woodlands, and picturesque panoramic overlooks at South Cumberland State Park along with many more fall treasures to stumble upon. The crisp, autumn air and stunning collage of fall colors make Tennessee the perfect fall destination for those wanting to get outside and try out those new hiking boots.
House Mountain State Natural Area – Corryton
Classified as Knox County’s highest point, House Mountain provides expansive views of the surrounding areas, making it an ideal hike for leaf-peeping. Among the 527 acres of natural area, experience unique wildlife, trees and wildflowers, all within a short driving distance from downtown Knoxville.
Bays Mountain Park and Planetarium – Kingsport
This 3,550-acre nature preserve features 38 miles of trails for hiking and biking, a 44-acre lake and native animal habitats. Take in the surrounding vibrant fall colors with a slow-paced barge ride across the lake or hike the Fire Tower Trail up to the Bays Mountain Fire Tower to take in the scenic views from above. During the fall months, the park offers many events, including Campfire tales, guided history hikes, nature evening paddles, nights with the rangers and a bike rally.

Summer is about to end, and fall will be here before you know it. Not only will the foliage start changing its colors, but temperatures start to dip. Children are back to school, and though it may be time to start transitioning away from our summer wardrobe, there is still an abundance of outdoor activities to enjoy.
Each season in East Tennessee brings its own unique beauty. Much of the lush greenery we so enjoy in the spring and summer is changing into vibrant yellows, golds, ambers, and radiant reds. With such rich scenery all around us, it’s no wonder that this is many people’s favorite time of year to visit this beautiful area we call home. We are blessed to live in this special corner of Tennessee.
Though the scenic beauty of East Tennessee is amazing, I think the people are what makes this area truly special. We are blessed to work with some truly amazing businesspeople. And this month, we welcome some new businesses to ETMV. Check out Baptist Eye Surgeons, Vonore Emporium, and The Good Neighbors Shoppe.
September is Suicide Prevention Month; each month more than 600 Veterans take their own lives. Many Veterans struggle with unseen wounds their entire lives. We and so many others are reminding Veterans everywhere that suicide is preventable and there is hope, but we know reaching out for help isn’t always easy. Please join me in praying for these Veterans and encourage those you may know to seek out the comprehensive resources at VA.gov/ REACH. They can help Veterans manage their challenges before their stress reaches a boiling point.
Finally, I would like to mention a September day in our history: September 11th. We at East Tennessee’s Mountain Views will always remember those that were lost on that fateful September 11th, 2001, those who made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as those that suffered loss. Patriot Day – Let us Never Forget!

Hearing and Health
By BoB ferraro, H.i s
You can hear but can’t always understand. You’re constantly told to turn down the TV. It’s hard to hear in groups of people or noisy environments. You feel fatigued after conversations, watching TV and other activities that require listening. If you can relate to any of these, you are not alone. But NOW is the time to act so your hearing does not continue to worsen.
Undiagnosed and untreated hearing loss can adversely affect the quality of life, as untreated hearing loss has been shown to affect cognitive performance and impair balance, leading to social isolation. Research has shown that people with hearing loss face triple the risk of developing dementia. With severe hearing loss the risk is even higher. Letting hearing loss go untreated can also reduce the effectiveness of the hearing aids you eventually get. When the nerves that process sound are idle, they start to atrophy, making it harder for the brain to interpret the sounds it’s receiving, a condition known as “auditory deprivation.” Early diagnosis and treatment keep the auditory processing enters of the brain active and keep these capabilities from deteriorating. Regular hearing tests can easily catch problems early on. If you are over 60, work in a noisy environment, or have frequent exposure to loud noises, you should have your hearing checked annually.
Today’s modern, medical-grade hearing aids help make hearing effortless again thanks to special speech-enhancing algorithms. And Bluetooth features let you stream TV shows and other audio devices (including your phone) directly into your ears.
Sharing quiet conversations, listening to music you love, binge-watching your favorite series – these and other activities are the simple pleasures of life you don’t want to miss because of hearing loss. There are also many other benefits when you improve your hearing. For example, these three:
» Vital Social Engagement – You may be tempted to just stay home if you’re having difficulty hearing in social situations. But that can lead to feeling lonely and isolated, which is associated with increased risk of heart disease, stroke, depression, and dementia. But hearing aids make social interaction easier so you can engage more fully with less effort.
» Sharper Thinking, Better Memory – With consistent use of hearing aids, according to a study by Johns Hopkins University, the loss of thinking and memory abilities slowed down by almost 50% over three years in a group of older adults.
» Better Balance, Fewer Falls – The inner ear plays a key role in helping you
maintain your balance, which plays an essential role in decreasing the likelihood of falling. Wearing hearing aids cuts the risk of falling in half, compared to people with hearing loss who don’t use hearing aids, according to a study by the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
Good hearing is essential to you to live your life to the fullest. At Tellico Hearing Solutions, we are committed to providing hearing solutions that will change your life to thrive socially and emotionally. Call us NOW to schedule your FREE hearing test. Now, our Moment of Joy individual is a local celebrity, having attended school in Lenoir City, and was selected Miss Lenoir City High School her senior year! Kathy went on to earn a degree in Education from UT, a Masters and EdS degree from LMU. Kathy worked for the Loudon County school system for 32 years, teaching 4th grade, choral music, and as a reading specialist. Perhaps her greatest love of teaching was the 15 years she spent teaching swimming lessons; quite a few residents in the area swim safely due to her instruction! Kathy and her husband Ed (also an educator and administrator) have been married for 54; the romance began with a blind date in high school! Kathy attends Our PLACE three days a week and can often be heard playing hymns on the piano for the participants. Ed feels it provides a sense of belonging, and is a safe, caring environment. She enjoys sharing with friends, participating in the activities, and when picked up at the end of the day, is always wearing a smile. Ed is able to volunteer at school, enjoy his woodworking or yard work, while knowing Kathy is in a compassionate, safe program. Seeing the love and smiles they share with one another is truly a “Moment of Joy!”

Pet Urine, Spills, and Your Expensive Oriental Rug!
By Kerry mCDuffie owner – suPerior rug CLeaning
You ve hand-picked the perfect Oriental rug for your living space. Then, oops, a spill happens, or you discover a wet spot left as a “special” gift from your beloved pet! Not only can the spill or urine harm the rug, it can also do significant damage to your floor underneath the rug. What do you do?
There are a couple of things you can do. First, before the
inevitable wet spot even happens, call Kerry at Superior Rug Cleaning (865-691-5686) to have a custom rug pad installed under your rug. It’s important to use a rug pad that protects you, your floors, and your rug. The wrong rug pad can cause damage to the floors, allow the rug to slip, roll, and slide, and might even be toxic. Superior Rug Cleaning installs pads that are waterproof, pet and child friendly, odorless, and are guaranteed washable for the life of the rug.
Second, if have a current spill or pet urine stain that you are dealing with, Kerry recommends you do the following:
1. Soak up the urine or spill immediately or as soon as possible.
2. Spray the area with a product called, “Nature’ s Miracle (Liquid). This is one of the best products I have found for these types of spills. (Available for consumer purchase in stores.)
3. Blot the area and repeat spraying with Nature’ s Miracle, if needed
4. Spray the area with water and blot
If these steps don’t get the area cleaned, call me at Superior Rug Cleaning - 865-691-5686. Many times, urine that has been there awhile will not come out with regular cleaning, it must be flushed professionally with special cleaning agents designed to remove the urea salts and ammonia smell. Sometimes even the yellow stain can lighten up.
Launched in 1985, for over 39 years Superior Rug Cleaning has focused specifically on pursuing and investing in new, state-of-the-art technology specifically to ensure your heirloom Oriental rug maintains its original beauty and quality.

about the process and the quality of his product. We wanted a team that focused on attention to detail, had excellent communication skills and most importantly…really wanted to work with us. Keener Homes is all that and more. Keener Homes may be a small operation, but we really wanted a builder that didn’t mass produce homes. Kit, Derek Miller (Construction Manager), and Krisha Loud (Office Manager) run a tight ship and really care about their clients. These wonderful people became our first TN friends! Kit really took the time to explain the build process and provided a binder to us with general building timelines and a supplier list. The suppliers Kit partners with were every bit as professional and caring as Kit. They spent time with us to discuss their available products and really helped with the decision-making process…. And we all know there are hundreds of decisions to be made! Kit only uses highly reputable partners who also care about their product (framers, painters, electricians, plumbers, etc.) and who have longevity in the business. Because we were living in another state during our build, Kit and his team provided regular updates and pictures so we were kept informed. If questions or issues arose (on either end), we’d jump on a call and talk it over. There were several times when Kit or Derek would contact us just to “double check” something to prevent downstream issues. We greatly appreciated this communication. There were several times we couldn’t visualize something, but we trusted Kit’s experience and let him make up our minds. Kit never let us down. Our outdoor kitchen is a prime example! Kit pretty much had free reign to design this area on our back porch. I welcome anyone to come look at how it turned out! Our build experience with Keener Homes went as smoothly as it could because of the knowledge, professionalism, and talent of this Keener team. Keener Homes brought our vision to fruition and we cannot express how much we love our home. It feels like resort living! Thank You Kit, Derek and Krisha for making our home the special place it is! – Jane and Don Tansor

TEN YEARS!
By Pastor PHiL ViCKers
The congregation I last served celebrated its one hundred and fiftieth anniversary while I was pastor there. The congregation I served before that was one hundred and twenty-five years old. It was a refreshing change of pace then to move from Kansas City to East Tennessee to serve a Church that in September is celebrating only its tenth anniversary. Two of my children are older than my Church.
Shepherd of the Lake started as an offshoot of Faith Lutheran in Farragut, but through the hard work and generosity of the membership and leaders, developed into its own fully functioning congregation in 2014. The original list of the charter members still hangs proudly by the entrance near our rack of nametags.
I have been interested to notice some differences in serving an older congregation versus a new one. In the older Churches, there were families who had a long history to tell and celebrate. Folks remembered when their grandparents were married in the Church. They remembered funerals of family members long gone. The photographs of the pastors who served there started in black and white. There is something to be said for serving an historic congregation.
But I have noticed some great things about serving a young one. A lot of the people in the pews were there at the beginning. They remember getting together and starting the congregation from nothing. They remember when the congregation didn’t even have its own space. Shepherd of the Lake is something that God brought about in the recent memory of many of our members. I think that has helped our congregants appreciate

first how good God is, and what a good thing it is that God brings us together
The bible tells us that God made the world and all that it is out nothing. God also makes the Church out of nothing. God spoke creation into existence, and God speaks the Church into existence through the preaching of the good news about His Son. At creation, God called everything that he had made good. No one was around to agree with Him at the time about the goodness of creation, but a lot of the people of Shepherd of the Lake were around to see the good news create a congregation, and they were around to agree with Him. What you make, Lord, is indeed good.

Health Care Costs Got You Down? Here’s How to Save
By yVonne marsH, CfP®, CPa
Whether people are selfemployed, retiring early, or just don’t have generous employer-paid health insurance anymore, the need to manage health care costs is a high priority. But few people know of a terrific, triple tax-advantaged opportunity to pay for out-ofpocket health costs. What is it, you ask? It’s a Health Savings Account (HSA).
Whether you obtain your health insurance through your employer, directly through an insurance company or through the healthcare exchange, the rules are the same: you simply need to have a qualified high deductible health insurance plan, which for 2024 is defined as:
1. a minimum annual deductible of $1,600 for an individual or $3,200 for a family; and 2. a maximum out-of-pocket of $8,050 for an individual or $16,100 for a family.
If your plan meets those criteria, you are on your way to enjoying many HSA advantages, including:
» Tax-deductible: Contributions to the HSA are 100%
deductible up to $4,150 for an individual ($5,150 if over age 55) or $8,300 for a family ($9,300 if over age 55). And you’ve got until the April tax filing deadline to fund the prior year’s contribution.
» Tax-free: Withdrawals to pay qualified medical expenses, including dental and vision, are never taxed.
» Tax-deferred: Investment earnings accumulate tax-deferred, and if used to pay qualified medical expenses, are tax-free.
» HSA money is yours to keep: Unlike a flexible spending account (FSA), unused money in your HSA isn’t forfeited at the end of the year; it continues to grow tax-deferred.
Employers typically offer payroll deductions for HSA funding, or you can set up your own HSA account at providers such as hsabank.com or optumbank.com.
If you want to supercharge your tax-free retirement savings strategy, then don’t spend your HSA account balance every year and save it for retirement instead. You can even use it to reimburse yourself for Part B and Part D Medicare premiums! For this longer-term strategy, invest your HSA account in mutual funds to increase the
potential for growth over time, rather than leaving it in a cash account.
You can keep funding your HSA until you are enrolled in Medicare (whether Part A and/or Part B). And if you wait past age 65 to enroll because you’re still working, there is a weird rule that your Part A enrollment date is retroactive by 6 months. For example, if you retire and enroll in Medicare at age 66, then you need to stop contributing to your HSA at age 65 ½. Have questions? Shoot me an email – ymarsh@marshwealth.com.

t’s only natural to compare your smile to the smiles of others who exhibit beautiful, straight, white teeth. Perhaps it’s time you discovered just how easy it can be to achieve your very own whiter, brighter smile. After all, how many of those people whose smiles you envy were actually born with that perfect smile? Probably not many.
Let’s consider teeth straightening first. Did you know that there is a procedure – in fact, the most advanced teeth straightening system available anywhere – that has already helped more than six million people achieve straighter, more natural looking smiles? Called Invisalign,
these transparent aligners incrementally adjust your teeth without the use of wire braces.
Invisalign is the world’s most advanced clear aligner. By combining 20 years of research and data from six million smiles, you can trust Invisalign to deliver the smile that you deserve. And while there are other clear aligners on the market, you are encouraged to examine these alternatives very closely.
According to the Better Business Bureau, there have been more than 1,800 consumer complaints across the country filed against one such Invisalign competitor promising significant savings with their DIY, in-home alignment system. These same complaints allege that patients have had to spend from $800 to $5,500 to correct the misalignment resulting from the use of these DIY aligners.
Invisalign is a modern, fully digitized experience designed to help you achieve the smile you want, the way you want it. Unlike other competitive clear aligners, Invisalign aligners use a proprietary SmartTrack® material that offers treatment times that are up to 50% faster, with greater predictability and control than competitive aligners.
Also, what you will appreciate most about the Invisalign system is that it is administered and supervised by your family dentist and not some third party dentist or orthodontist who will recommend a treatment without ever having examined you personally. After all, who knows you better than your family dentist?
To learn how Invisalign can help you achieve the smile you’ve always wanted, call Heritage Family Dentistry at 865-816-9211 today to schedule your no-cost, no-obligation evaluation.

CHICAGO’S BIG ORANGE
By Bo Carey
“Dad, we can catch part of today’s college World Series game at the Tennessee Bar.” My son John and I had just landed at O’Hare Airport and headed downtown on the train prior to a business conference the following couple of days. So off we went on the Blue Line, then the Brown line north to the Sedgwick Stop, signature bar for the windy city’s Tennessee Volunteers.
I’d heard about Chicago’s hangouts for college sports fanatics - there’s an Ohio State watering hole, an official bar for the Maryland Terps and multiple Irish Pubs dedicated to the Notre Dame faithful; however, I was intrigued about a place which solely caters to Vol fans on game days in this northern big city.
As we opened the door, it was a wild sight to behold. Every patron dressed in orange, and they all talked like us! Every television was playing the Tennessee-FSU World Series game with volume on high. It was obvious that UT alumni living in Chicago had agreed on a place to gather with kindred spirits… while consuming other spirits. We sat with a recently married couple who were on vacation from Knoxville and got acquainted between innings.
Suddenly an attractive young lady yelled out “John Carey, is that you?” She gave him a big hug before he introduced her as Katie Palm, president of the “Chicagoland Vols.” My son had been an officer in the same organization when he lived in Chicago a few years ago.
As the Vols took a big lead over the Seminoles, it became obvious they would advance to the World Series finals against Texas A&M. After every home run the bartender played Rocky Top at full blast while Chicago’s Orange Nation exchanged high fives. At some point a local strolled in and asked the bartender if he’d change just one t.v. to the Cubs game. The quick answer was “No!” The poor guest just stared in wonder at all the orange clad hillbillies and left.
For the rest of the week, it was all business for me in Chicago, attending sessions on best practices for mattress and furniture stores. But John went back to the Tennessee bar that weekend to watch his beloved Diamond Vols on their course to winning the 2024 College World Series. May the Sedgwick Stop Tennessee Bar celebrate many more glorious victories. Go Big Orange!

How can you not love sweaters that feel like a hug?
The sweaters of this season may have varied shapes, but they all have one thing in common... they all offer warmth and a cozy, comfy feel!
The bright and bold colors we are seeing on sweaters this year are a welcome change from past seasons... just because the weather is cooling down doesn’t mean your wardrobe color palette has to! Emerald green, electric blue, and our personal favorite, Volunteer orange hues, are all strong... and pair perfectly back with fall staple colors like brown, grey and black.
Push that chunky cardigan to the back of your closet (for now!), and move the newest silhouette, the lightweight transitional sweater, to the front. Cotton knit pieces are perfect for the beginning of East Tennessee fall, which we know can still be quite warm. Choose any length... from cropped, hitting just above the hip line and ultra flattering on petite customers, to just above the knee, perfect for pairing with leggings and tall boots.
Cowl necks are also strong again and can be very stylish paired with the perfect accessories - statement earrings or a fun hat can quickly elevate and add interest to your outfit!
So, it’s out with the old and in with the new! This fall’s sweaters prove that warmth never looked so good. Stop in and let us show you our current crop of this season’s best sweaters... we have a style that’s perfect for everybody and every BODY!
We look forward to seeing you soon!

East Tennessee Area Wildlife: WETLANDS
Photographing the beauty of Tennessee, and the wildlife who call it home.
By Kalley CooK
Wetlands are often underappreciated despite the fact that they provide so many important benefits. Wetlands are among the most productive habitats on earth and provide shelter, nursery areas, and food. You can usually find migrating birds around them. Most of the time when we have rare bird visitors here in Tennessee, they choose to be around wetlands. It’s not just birds that enjoy wetlands, but an abundance of wildlife like them as well such as deer, otters, reptiles, amphibians and so much more. They are important to us just as much wildlife, without them we would have more flooding as wetlands act like a sponge and soaking up excess water, shoreline erosion control, natural water quality improvement and several other reasons. I always enjoy any time I get to photograph around any wetland and very rarely leave a wetland without photographing something!
Though wildlife and nature photography hold her heart, you can contact Kalley for all of your photography needs, including sports, portraits, still life, food, real-estate, weddings, and photojournalism.
Kalley uses a Canon 7d markii, paired with a Canon 100-400mm lens for all of her photos. You can purchase photos or prints of Kalley’s wildlife photography on a variety of products (mugs, mousepads, magnets, etc.). Have a favorite animal that you’d like some text included? Custom orders welcome.

Invest in Garage Flooring that Lasts
In recent years, the trend of investing in garage floor coatings has gained significant traction among homeowners, and this growth shows no signs of slowing down. A recent industry report reveals that consumer demand for garage flooring has surged by more than 20 percent in recent years, reflecting the increasing importance homeowners place on this often-overlooked part of the house.
Given that the garage floor endures more daily wear and tear than any other surface in the home, it’s crucial for it to be not only aesthetically pleasing but also durable enough to withstand the heat from vehicle tires and the impact from tools and heavy objects. However, not all garage floor coatings are created equal, and selecting the right one is key to ensuring longevity and performance.
Many large home improvement stores offer DIY epoxy garage floor kits, which are popular due to their affordability and ease of use. These kits typically include water-based epoxies that serve as a good basecoat. However, they often lack a high-performance urethane topcoat and proper concrete preparation, both of which are essential for a long-lasting finish. As a result, these DIY systems are prone to premature failure, leading to frustration and additional costs for homeowners.
Grind Preparation, Not Acid Wash
PremierGarage of Knoxville, recognized as the area’s flooring experts, emphasizes the importance of following industry best practices when selecting and applying garage floor coatings. One of the most critical factors in ensuring the durability of a concrete coating is the preparation of the floor. Proper preparation involves grinding the surface to create the necessary texture for a strong bond between the epoxy and the concrete. While some companies opt for the less expensive method of acid washing, this approach does not create a sufficient bond, increasing the likelihood of the floor failing prematurely.
Full Flake Coverage, Not Partial
Another key practice is ensuring full flake coverage rather than partial. Decorative flakes, which are broadcast into the epoxy, serve both a decorative and functional purpose. These flakes increase the thickness of the epoxy layer and act as an additional bonding agent. Because flakes are more flexible than solid epoxy, they help prevent chipping when objects are dropped on the floor. Fully saturating the base coat with flakes makes it up to three times thicker than if only a minimal amount of flakes were used.
Commercial-Grade Topcoat
Finally, applying a commercial-grade polyurethane topcoat is vital for the garage floor to withstand the test of time. Polyurethane offers superior resistance to chemicals, slips, UV rays, and scratches, while also retaining its gloss over time. This non-porous coating cures to be twice as hard as traditional epoxies, making it resistant to gasoline, auto fluids, paint thinner, pesticides, and other harsh chemicals.
For homeowners looking to create a long-lasting garage floor, PremierGarage of Knoxville offers expert guidance and high-quality solutions. With the right flooring, along with custom cabinets and storage solutions, your garage can become one of the most functional and attractive spaces in your home.

In the Garden September
By lisa GruGin
HALLELUJAH,
FALL is in the air! How are things going in your yard? This is a great time to reevaluate and make plans for next year because you know what did well and what didn’t. What would you like to be different about next year’s garden? Keep in mind that our weather didn’t do us many favors, so maybe you shouldn’t tear it all up and start again! September is a busy time in the garden because it is when we start pre paring it for fall and winter. Here are things that you need to do this month:
n Do your walk around and check into all the areas that you have ignored while it was hot.
1. Look up to see how trees are faring. Are canopies sparse with dropping leaves? Are there broken, damaged, or diseased branches? Do you have oozing spots, sawdust, or a lot of wood pecker holes? How about shelf mushrooms? Did the cicadas cause the tips of branches to die?
2. Look down to ground level. Do you have mole tunnels or small tunnel entrances that indicate mole and/or vole problems? Are skunks, possums, and other critters digging up your lawn to get to grubs?
3. Look into shrubs and smaller plants to check for signs of disease and insects. and perennials doing? What is going on in your vegetable garden? If you find problems during your check, stop by and let us help. There are usually treatments to aid your plants. If there aren’t, we will tell you that as well. Please don’t do major pruning right now either! You can cut out diseased or dead branches, but wait on shaping until the plants have gone dormant.
n If you planted veggies this year, make notes of what varieties you tried and where they were planted so that you can “crop rotate” next year. (Yes, you still have to do that in raised beds. Diseases build up in the soil if you do not.) If your vegetable beds have stopped producing, clean them out and plant fall veggies. You can also add compost, manure, or leaf mold to improve your soil for next year.
n Did you have problems with disease and insects this year? Our long growing season also means we have a long breeding season for insects and fungus. Please be sure to get up all the fallen leaves and plant debris from problem plants so that insects and fungal spores can’t overwinter. Evergreens can still be treated if necessary, but it is a waste of money to treat deciduous trees and shrubs that will not regrow leaves now anyway.
n If your annuals look terrible, remove and compost them. Impatiens and begonias in particular should be pulled before a frost because they will turn to mush if they freeze. Swap them for cool season annuals or perennials.
n If you are not going to refill your containers, dump out old soil and store them in a dry area. This is particularly important for terra cotta or low fired ceramics that will not withstand freezing temperatures.
n If you need to divide and/or transplant perennials, September is a good month to do spring blooming or fleshy rooted perennials such as peonies, iris, hosta, and lilies.
n Don’t be embarrassed by plant failure, especially if you are new to the area or are not an experienced gardener. It happens to everyone. Your yard/garden is a living thing, and all living things change. Some things thrive and some don’t, so just roll with it and look at “failures” as an opportunity to try something different! Before I finish, I would like to offer a few tips on mums. There are some common misconceptions that you should be aware of.
1. There are some lovely perennial mums (which now have the botanical name of Dendranthema), but they aren’t the colorful balls that you see everywhere this time of year. Those are hybrids, and they may or may not come back. They may also come back a different color or as dozens of little “mumlets” instead of a single plant. If you want to try to get them to come back, plant in the ground by mid September so that they can get roots down before a freeze.

Maple Lane Farms
Have an “a-maz-ing” time exploring the corn maze and pumpkin patch at Maple Lane Farms in Greenback. Schmidt likes to call the fall fun activities “agritainment.” Beginning Friday September 27, experience fun for all ages getting lost in the corn maze. This year’s sponsor is Pellissippi State Community College celebrating its 50th anniversary. You can also ride a hay wagon to the pumpkin patch. For the children, there’s a kiddie maze, inflatables, and face painting. The Country Barn Store is a haven for all things Halloween and autumnal.
