Village Realty - Experience and More
If you’re looking to buy or sell a home in the Tellico Village and East Tennessee areas, then you might want to check out Village Realty.

Located in Tellico Village, Village Realty has been operating in our area since 1989, and it’s been owned by Jim Doyel all that time, so they really know the area and how to buy and sell here. We sat down to talk with Jim to ask him a few questions about Village Realty and how they’ve been so successful for so long.

East Tennessee Mountain Views: Jim, we know you’ve been in this industry for a long time now. Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Jim Doyel: I started in real estate sales for Cooper Communities around 1970 in Bella Vista, Arkansas, so I’ve being doing real estate for about 53 years now. I moved to Tennessee with Cooper in 1985. They were developing land for residential purposes and commercial real estate all over the country. Cooper had just set up their first Tellico Village sales team, and I got to be a part of it.

Do you remember what you were doing in 1986? I was selling lots in Tellico Village! I’m a full-time realtor with 37 years of experience with real estate sales in the Tellico Village area. I have both GRI and CRS designations from the National Association of Realtors. I’m also the owner and principal broker of Village Realty.
ETMV: Tell us a little about Village Realty. What can our readers expect to experience when they work with you?

Jim: I’m glad you asked that. Village Realty is a full service residential and commercial real estate company specializing in Golf and Lake Communities like Tellico Village. “Full service” means we offer our clients expert and professional advice and assistance with every part of the realty process. We help with purchases, sales, rentals, property management, relocations, and referral services. We also can give advice on and coordinate other key components of buying, selling, or renting your home, such as mortgage services, title work, and insurance services.
The world of buying, selling, and renting homes is complicated, and home ownership can be just as confusing and overwhelming. We really want to make sure that we can be there for you through the whole process. Whatever you need to do with that home, we want you to know you’re not alone, and we’ll be there to help you with every step along the way. With close to 4 decades of real estate
experience, and all of it focused on this area in particular, we know all the right questions to ask and everything you might need to know. You might think of us as navigators on a ship. The waters might be rough and confusing and seemingly endless, but we’re here to help you find your way.
ETMV: What do you think makes Village Realty unique?
Jim: Like I said before, we’ve been in the area for 37 years. We know this area and the people who live here. And we’re locally owned too. All our realtors are fulltime, so you’re getting all our focus and expertise at your disposal and dedicated to serving your needs. You’re also getting
all our knowledge of this community. No distractions. Our office is located right here in the heart of Tellico Village. So not only are we helping people get into this community, but we’re also a part of it as well. That means the buck stops here, so to speak.
ETMV: Village Realty seems to have a strong focus on its internet presence. Can you tell us a little more about that?
Jim: Realistically, about 80% of buyers start looking for a new home by searching on the internet, so having an internet presence is incredibly important these days. It’s all about probability. You want to make your property visible to as many people

Fall will be here before you know it, and it represents a season of change. Not only will the foliage start changing its colors, but temperatures will be more moderate. Children are back to school, and though it’s time to start transitioning away from our summer wardrobe to warmer clothing, there is still an abundance of outdoor activities to enjoy.
Each season in East Tennessee brings its own unique beauty. Much of the lush greenery we so enjoy in the spring and summer is changing into vibrant yellows, glowing golds, striking ambers, and radiant reds. With such rich scenery all around us, it’s no wonder that this is many people’s favorite time of year to visit this special area we call home. We are blessed to live in this special corner of Tennessee.
Labor Day is celebrated in September, and it symbolically signals the end of summer. Labor Day is a day that is dedicated to the achievements of American workers and the contributions they make to the strength and prosperity of our country and vital to our economy’s recovery. So, Labor Day serves as a reminder to celebrate and appreciate the American worker. With so many businesses experiencing staffing shortages, it is an especially challenging time to own a business; please show patience and appreciation for the workers with whom you come in contact.
September is also Suicide Prevention Month; each month more than 600 Veterans take their own lives. Many Veterans struggle with unseen wounds their entire lives. We and so many others are reminding Veterans everywhere that suicide is preventable and there is hope, but we know reaching out for help isn’t always easy. Please join me in praying for these Veterans and encourage those you may know to seek out the comprehensive resources at VA.gov/REACH. They can help Veterans manage their challenges before their stress reaches a boiling point.
Finally, I would like to mention a September day in our history: September 11th. We at East Tennessee’s Mountain Views will always remember those that were lost on that fateful September 11th, 2001, those who made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as those that suffered loss. Patriot Day – Let us Never Forget!

as possible. Just like any other kind of ad. Otherwise, it doesn’t matter how nice your home is or how desirable the area might be if people just don’t see it. So, for sellers, having your home listed on a busy, powerful real estate site is essential. We’ve got you covered there. But it’s just as important for buyers. For anyone looking to get into the area, we’ve got flexible and powerful search tools that will help you parse through the largest and best databases in all East Tennessee. You can even set up automated searches, where you tell our site exactly what you’re looking for and we send you everything new that matches that description.
ETMV: Tell us more about Village Realty’s property rental services.

Invisalign: Clearly Your Best Solution for a Great Smile

It’s only natural to compare your smile to the smiles of others who exhibit beautiful, straight, white teeth. Perhaps it’s time you discovered just how easy it can be to achieve your very own whiter, brighter smile. After all, how many of those people whose smiles you envy were actually born with that perfect smile? Probably not many.
Let’s consider teeth straightening first. Did you know that there is a procedure – in fact, the most advanced teeth straightening system available anywhere – that has already helped more than six million people achieve straighter, more natural looking smiles? Called Invisalign, these transparent aligners incrementally adjust your teeth without the use of wire braces.
Invisalign is the world’s most advanced clear aligner. By combining 20 years of research and data from six million smiles, you can trust Invisalign to deliver the smile that you deserve. And while there are other clear aligners on the market, you are encouraged to examine these alternatives very closely.
According to the Better Business Bureau, there have been more than 1,800 consumer complaints across the country filed against one such Invisalign competitor promising significant savings with their DIY, in-home alignment system. These same complaints allege that patients have had to spend from $800 to $5,500 to correct the misalignment resulting from the use of these DIY aligners.
Invisalign is a modern, fully digitized experience designed to help you achieve the smile you want, the way you want it. Unlike other competitive clear aligners, Invisalign aligners use a proprietary SmartTrack® material that offers treatment times that are up to 50% faster, with greater predictability and control than competitive aligners.
Also, what you will appreciate most about the Invisalign system is that it is administered and supervised by your family dentist and not some third party dentist or orthodontist who will recommend a treatment without ever having examined you personally. After all, who knows you better than your family dentist?
To learn how Invisalign can help you achieve the smile you’ve always wanted, call Heritage Family Dentistry at 865-816-9211 today to schedule your no-cost, no-obligation evaluation.

HAPPY FALL, Y’ALL!
How can you not love sweaters that feel like a hug? The sweaters of this season may have varied shapes, but they all have one thing in common... they all offer warmth and a cozy, comfy feel!
The bright and bold colors we are seeing on sweaters this year are a welcome change from past seasons... just because the weather is cooling down doesn’t mean your wardrobe color palette has to! Emerald green, electric blue, and our personal favorite, Volunteer orange hues, are all strong... and pair perfectly back with fall staple colors like brown, grey and black.
Push that chunky cardigan to the back of your closet (for now!), and move the newest silhouette, the lightweight transitional sweater, to the front. Our PLACE Walk 2 Remember & Car Show October 7
By Diane Strever for Our PLaCeThe Our PLACE Walk 2 Remember & Car Show will take place at Lenoir City Park on October 7, 2023 from 10-2. Proceeds will be used by Our PLACE to support their daily programs and help raise funds for an expansion. The expansion is being driven by the overwhelming success of Our PLACE during its first year and the growing need to help more families impacted by Alzheimer’s and other Dementia related diseases in our community. As we’ve had time to “live” in our space at Our PLACE, we have recognized ways that we can refine our program needs and double the number of participants we can serve. As we support the expansion and programming at Our PLACE, as well as continue our outreach and resources for caregivers, our hope is that you realize “You Never Walk Alone.”
This year’s Walk 2 Remember is a combined effort of
Our PLACE, two local Rotary Clubs (Tellico Village & Lenoir City), and several local car clubs, including the Tellico Village Car Club. Dozens of volunteers from these organizations, and many others in the local area, will help to support this effort. Visit www. walk2remember.net for more information and register to walk as an individual or put together a team.
This will be a fun day of activities for the entire family! Cars, food trucks, music and much more!
The Walk will consist of 1/2-mile and 1-mile walk options, beginning at 10 am. We encourage all participants to form teams to help raise funds for this event, which will further the expansion of Our PLACE. For more information on how to form a team please check www.walk2remember.net.

Individual walkers are also appreciated.
If you would you like to be a Team Liaison and serve a key role for this year’s Walk 2 Remember, we would love to have you participate in this role. All efforts as we walk together in this event will help us serve a greater number of individuals impacted by Alzheimer’s and Dementia related diseases in our community. Please join us to raise awareness and dollars for Our PLACE, and for those that are welcomed as part of this growing community program.

Space-Saving Murphy Beds - Awake to the Possibilities
Murphy beds have long been a solution for condos and other homes where floor space is at a premium. Today, many homeowners of larger homes are also opting for a Murphy bed as a practical addition to their living space.
William L. Murphy invented the Murphy bed in the
early 1900s. He wanted to hide the bed in his cramped one-room apartment so he could have more space to entertain. He experimented with a folding bed, eventually receiving a patent. For more than 100 years, these beds have been helping homeowners save space.
Do you need a Murphy bed in your home? Investing in
a Murphy bed can:
>> Create More Space – Most families live in all their space, so a dedicated guest room is not always practical. If you’re short on space, but need an extra bed, a Murphy bed is the perfect solution. It provides flex-space for any home. You can use the room as a bedroom at night and a home office or playroom at other times. You won’t lose any space and guests will have a comfortable place to sleep.
» Increase Home Value - If you decide to rent or sell your home, maximizing space is an important feature for potential buyers. A Murphy bed allows the ability to maximize a home’s space while increasing the value of the house.
» Designed for Any Space – Designs depend on your needs and budget. The Tailored Closet design experts thoughtfully design each bed to seamlessly integrate into your space, proving you don’t have to compromise style when space is limited. A Murphy bed can be elaborate or basic. Many designs include desks on one side so the room can also be a home office by day. Or the bed can be bordered by a bookcase, side cabinets or pullout drawers to give you extra storage. Most of all, it takes up very little space when closed, approximately 16” deep. Murphy Beds come in twin, full, queen or king sizes to accommodate any space.
» Fit Any Décor – From a solid gray finish to a dark wood-grain, choose the look that fits your style. Also, there are custom LED light options to ensure there is enough lighting when the bed is in use.
If you want the flex-space a Murphy bed provides, give The Tailored Closet a call for a free consultation using their 3D design software. Let The Tailored Closet help you recreate your space!

Does Medicare Pay for Long Term Care Costs?
It’s easy to get confused about what types of LTC costs Medicare will pay for because it’s, well…confusing. And knowing what to expect from Medicare down the road will keep your best laid financial plan from being derailed with a costly health event.
In a nutshell, there is “skilled care” and “custodial care”. Skilled care is medical care provided by trained personnel (i.e. doctors, nurses, physical therapists, etc.) and IS covered by Medicare. Custodial care is the support needed to help you with non-medical Activities for Daily Living (eating, bathing, dressing, toileting, mobility, and continence) and is generally NOT covered by Medicare.
The need for custodial care can come from cognitive impairment and/or general physical decline that is part of the normal aging process. I haven’t met a retiree yet who says they don’t want to stay in their home as long as possible. To make that happen, custodial care can become necessary, and it’s not cheap. According to the 2022 Genworth Cost of Care survey, in Knoxville TN the average
home health aide is $27/hour. Once you reach 40 hours/week of home care, you’re up to a whopping $4,500/month. If there’s been no proactive financial planning, the extra care may fall to a family member to help fill the gap. Unfortunately, the reality of that situation isn’t ideal – your spouse may not have the physical strength to help you move around, no matter how good their intentions are. And most adult children are juggling full-time jobs and kids and, to be honest, they really don’t need the stress of being your caretaker too.
What your spouse or your adult child DOES need, though, is to be in the position of being your care coordinator. You can elevate them from caretaker to care coordinator by making sure you have a financial strategy in place so you can afford to have someone come into your home and help you.
There are great solutions that can give you tax-free dollars to cover custodial care costs or provide a death benefit for your heirs if you never use it. It’s never too

late to make a plan. If you’re married, have you thought through both spouses’ lifetimes? If the first spouse needs expensive care, then the surviving spouse is left with diminished resources, the loss of a Social Security check, and higher taxes as a single filer. Do you have enough assets for both of you? If you’re single, it’s paramount you have a plan in place that protects your financial independence for your lifetime.
Call, email or contact me on our website if you’d like to learn more. Your family will thank you!

East Tennessee Area Wildlife: Elk

Photographing the beauty of Tennessee, and the wildlife who call it home.

It’s a good time to start thinking about elk! The elk will be in rut very soon and while you can’t view elk in Tennessee, you can travel to Cataloochee Valley or Cherokee in North Carolina, which are both still in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. My favorite is Cataloochee Valley which is where all these photos are from. The elk begin to rut way before the deer do, and their rut is very short: mid-September through the end of October. These big bulls will challenge each other to win the rights of the females, and it’s a sight to see! Hearing them bugle in the quiet valley, echoing off the mountains, will almost give you goosebumps. It’s a must see for yourself!

Boating Season Is in Full Swing? Are You?
By PatriCK BoringNo one needs to tell you boating season is in full swing. You are in the know, and your boat has likely already been in the water. But it only takes one trip out on the lake to experience once again the hours and hours of cleaning and detailing that go with it hand in hand. A second trip out on the lake just drives it home. By the time the weather is perfect for yet another outing, you might find it hard to motivate yourself. That is, unless there’s a near-magical way to keep your boat clean, maintained, and ready to go at the press of a button.
Well, it turns out there is!

Cutting down the back-breaking labor and maximizing your time in the water can be just at your fingertips– that is if you have a Touchless Boat Cover System from Lifetime Docks, LLC.

Picture this: an effective garage for your boat that protects your craft like your home garage protects your car. It’s easy to maintain. Save hours of detailing each year, knowing the back of your boat will stay dry and clean. Even if your boat does get wet, due to our vented Touchless Cover, it can actually dry out, removing mold and mildew from the equation in one swoop. With no effort on your part, your boat’s paint, decals, gelcoat, swim platform, and upholstery are protected from the sun’s unrelenting UV rays. And to promote security, once covered, your boat and everything in it is out of sight and difficult to access – that is, unless you have the remote.
You invested in your boat. Now invest to secure its maximum use! It’s an investment you won’t regret, allowing you to take back hours and hours that would have otherwise been spent on maintenance, to instead spend them on what you would rather be doing— being out on that water. Lifetime Docks offers various maintenance packages for your new cover, too, so you can have the peaceof-mind knowing your cover is being well cared for and professionally inspected.”
Don’t waste another hour! Invest in your Touchless Boat Cover System. Call Patrick Boring at Lifetime Docks, LLC to reserve your system before the season draws to a close. Boating Season is in full swing. Are you?

Fall is in the air! Well, some days it is. Our average temperature falls from the mid-80s early this month to the mid-70s later in the month, and I’m so ready!
Cool mornings and evenings are a great time for yard reevaluation and making plans. What would you like to do differently? Do you need to add or remove some plants? This is the time to make decisions because you know what did well and what didn’t. Here are some other things that you need to do this month:
» Walk around and check all the areas that you have ignored while it was hot.
1. Look up to see how trees are faring. Are branches broken, damaged, or diseased? Do you have oozing spots, sawdust, or a lot of woodpecker holes? How about shelf mushrooms? These are indications that a tree is stressed and may have a disease or insect problem.
2. Look down to ground level. Do you have tunnels or entrances that indicate mole and/or vole problems? Are skunks, possums, and other critters digging up your lawn? Has your lawn suffered from brown patch or fungal issues?* Do you need to amend your soil? Fall is a good time to do some lawn work!
* Note, mushrooms are not an indicator of fungal issues! They are a sign that your soil has a lot of organic matter that they are helping to break down. They are helpers!
3. Look around and inside your plants for signs of disease and insects. How are annuals and perennials doing? Do shrubs have signs of illness or infestation? Struggling plants may need a systemic product application so problems don’t overwinter and reappear next year.
» Evaluate your vegetable growing successes and failures. Make notes of what varieties you tried and where they were planted, then plan to “crop rotate” next year. This prevents disease buildup in the beds. Vegetable garden stopped producing? Clean it out and plant fall veggies. Add compost, manure, or leaf mold to improve soil for next year.

» Take preventative steps if you had serious disease or insect problems. Fallen leaves with fungal spots or insects should be removed from the ground so the spores and eggs don’t redeposit. Apply systemic products if necessary.
» If annuals look terrible, remove and compost them. Pull impatiens and begonias before a frost because they turn to mush if they freeze. Swap them for cool season annuals or perennials.

» If you’re not going to refill your containers, dump out old soil and store them in a dry area - particularly important for terra cotta or low fired ceramics that will not withstand freezing temperatures.
» September is a good month to divide and/or transplant spring blooming or fleshy rooted perennials such as peonies, daylilies, poppies, garden phlox, and iris. Cut back overgrown plants, but do not cut into the crown - the new growth layer
close to the soil.
» Purchase bulbs while the selection is good. Keep them in a cool, dry place until it’s time to plant them in late September through November.
» Get houseplants ready to come back inside with a nice shower and systemic insecticide treatment. This prevents uninvited houseguests.
» Don’t be embarrassed by plant failure, especially if you’re new to the area or not an experienced gardener. It happens to everyone. Your yard/garden is a living thing, and all living things change. Some thrive and some don’t, so just roll with it and look at “failures” as an opportunity to try something different!
Let me finish with info on fall flowers:
1. The colorful balls that you see everywhere this time of year are not perennial mums (which now have the botanical name of Dendranthema). They are hybrids that may or may not come back. They may also come back a different color or as dozens of little “mumlets” instead of a single plant. Plant in the ground by mid-September so they can get roots down before a freeze. If you want an actual perennial, stop by and check out our selection!
2. Mums have a 4-6 week bloom time that is made shorter by heat and longer by cool weather. If your neighbor has a mum that lasts the entire fall, it isn’t real! There are early, mid, and late season bloomers, so buy them when you’re ready - compost them and buy another when they fade.
3. Pansies are cool weather plants and like to go in the ground mid to late September. Planted too early, they will stretch. Planted too late, they won’t have time to get established. Questions? Give us a call.
I encourage you to stop by and see all the wonderful things we have for fall. Beautiful gardens begin at Meadow View!

The Loudon Auto Drag Racing Strip
By Bo CareyFew readers are aware, a site on the lower end of Tellico Village once provided an exciting, loud, and dangerous auto racing venue. It was the Loudon Drag Strip, formally the Loudon Raceway. The 2-lane strip ran parallel to the Little Tennessee River and was located near today’s exposed silos in Tellico Lake.
The heyday of drag racing was the 1960’s, so I was just a kid when some older boys included me one night on a forbidden adventure without parental knowledge. To get there one came down the hill to the end of Davis Ferry Road (now Tanasi Neighborhood), then along what to me was a very spooky course through an old farm and woodlands.
The noise was deafening, the speed of the cars unbelievable to a youngster and the seamy atmosphere intriguing. Alcohol, profanity, disputes, and accusations, not to mention unsafe conditions. Even after a rain shower, the race would go on, often leading to dangerous spinouts and a trip to the Old Loudon Hospital.
The Cathey family ran the strip, maintained a concession stand and somehow kept fighting to a minimum. 60’s model Barracudas, souped up Chevies were big winners, and there was a frequent winner known only as “Mr. Plymouth.” A couple of the most popular drag racers of the day are now successful Loudon businessmen and leaders in their churches. They would not want their names mentioned in this article.
Today the drag strip is 40 feet underwater. Tanasi Golf Course sits nearby providing recreation for Villagers, but it will never compare to the entertainment and excitement of its predecessor.

The Low Talker, or the Strained Listener?
By BoB ferraro h i. S.Do you find yourself always asking others to speak up? Are you turning up the volume on the television more and more? Many of us will experience some loss of hearing during our lifetimes. While many hearing loss sufferers seek treatment, others ignore the problem altogether. In some instances, hearing loss occurs so gradually that it often goes unnoticed. But turning a deaf ear to your hearing loss can get you into trouble.
I laugh when I remember the Seinfeld episode “The Low Talker” where Elaine and Jerry pretend to understand what Kramer’s date is saying, and Jerry unknowingly agrees to wear a “puffy shirt” on a TV show. If you or a loved one is dealing with similar misunderstandings, maybe it’s time to explore a solution.
It can be hard to acknowledge experiencing hearing-related issues. Hearing loss is so easily dismissed as a sign of aging, and refusing help can be the first stage of denial. But like so many other ailments in life, when left untreated, hearing loss can actually hasten the loss of other skills. Hearing issues accelerate the loss of balance and cognitive function that accompany the aging process.
When someone we truly care about begins to lose the skills and abilities they have always taken for granted, it can mark an often difficult period of transition for them as well as those around them. Sufferers might ask others, perhaps a good friend or spouse, to repeat what others have just said, thinking that the speaker was mumbling or that background noise was interfering with their ability to hear clearly.
Many people refrain from addressing their hearing loss because they think they will appear older or weaker than they feel. But don’t worry: the new hearing aids we sell are not your Grandma’s hearing aids! People will not even notice that you’re wearing them.
Most hearing loss occurs as we age, but so does the loss of the 20/20 vision we once

Stop Just Wishing for More Convenience
In 2017, when the Henrys moved to Tennessee from North Carolina, they were sure to include a few convenient rollout drawers in the kitchen cabinets of their house when it was being built. They quickly became aware that the limited number of roll-out shelves actually made it more difficult to access the items in the deep lower section of their cabinets. Not big fans of resorting to dropping to their knees on the floor in order to reach items way in the back, they decided that more roll-out shelving would be the best solution.

“We can’t say enough great things about Shelf Help, their products, their timeliness, or their installation.
We are very happy campers!!”
- The Henrys
They had seen ads for Shelf Help, noticing that it was a local company, and gave them a call for a free estimate. After a very positive meeting with the owner of Shelf Help, where they were able to see product samples, discuss solutions for more challenging areas - like cabinets under sinks - and an installation time line, the Henrys were ready to place an order. And what an order it was!
“After Shelf Help gave us an estimate, we were so impressed with them and their product that we immediately ordered more than 40 roll-out shelves,” said Dick Henry. “We decided to install them everywhere there were cabinet shelves in the entire house. We ordered them for the kitchen, the laundry, the butler’s pantry, our rec room, and the master bath, which has his and her sink areas. We also ordered shelves for under the kitchen, laundry, and bathroom sinks where we never thought we could have them. Shelf Help can come up with a solution for anywhere you want roll-outs.”
The Henrys were able to have their practical and useful rollout shelving installed in just a couple of weeks - as promised! The roll-out drawers fit right into any home’s existing cabinets or pantry, providing easier access, better organization, and maximum use available storage space. Shelf Help was able to complete the installation in less than a day so that disruption was limited. Excited to have their cabinet access and function restored, the Henrys could not be happier with their Shelf Help roll-out shelving. Jane Henry reflects, “Never a day goes by that we don’t mention how glad we are to have the many roll-outs. The quality of the shelves is outstanding, it can’t be beat!”
If you are experiencing challenges reaching items in your cabinets, Shelf Help has the understanding and know-how to evaluate, design, measure, and professionally install solutions tailored to your needs and budget. Locally owned and operated, let Shelf Help make the most of your home’s kitchen, bath, or pantry storage space. Shelf Help

enjoyed when we were younger. Just as the loss of our once crystal-clear vision is easily overcome with corrective lenses, the same is true of hearing loss. Technological advances in today’s hearing instruments can actually help you, a friend, or a loved one to lead a full and active life.
Just as you wouldn’t refuse to wear glasses to improve blurry eyesight, don’t deny yourself the opportunity to hear clearly. If you, a friend, or a loved one is experiencing hearing loss, I believe the greatest gift you can give is the gift of hearing, a gift the wearer will remember and enjoy every day.
Addressing your hearing loss improves your quality of life, yet it may be an even greater gift to your loved ones. When you can hear clearly, communication becomes easier and more enjoyable for those around you – and you won’t accidentally agree to wear any puffy shirts!

Loudon County Habitat for Humanity is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a worldwide Christian housing organization. All funds to build in Loudon County are raised locally to provide safe, affordable houses for low-income families who are willing to partner with Habitat. These partner families help build their houses and then buy them from Habitat through an affordable mortgage. Funds from these mortgages go into a Fund for Humanity which allows Habitat to build other houses.
