Expect the Unexpected

The Blinds & More team brings a new definition to the term “local,” creating oneof-a-kind spaces with thoughtful attention to detail and design.

“You know, even after two decades designing custom window treatments,

I’ve discovered that no two projects are ever the same,” says Jamie Kidd, founder and co-owner of Blinds & More E. TN. “I love what I do, but I also love the fact that no project is ever what you expect. Embracing the unexpected is truly the beauty of design.”

Jamie and her team have been exceptional to work with. We ordered custom draperies, custom bedding, motorized shades and custom window treatments. The quality of the product, attention to detail and the professional installation get 5 stars!! Even more impressive has been the great communication and honesty that you won’t find in many other companies out there. Highly recommended!!

Blinds & More E. TN is a true multi-generational family business specializing in “All Things Window.” From soft window treatments - which include draperies, roman shades, cornices and valances - to your functional window treatments such as blinds, shutters, roller and cellular shades, Blinds & More has all your window treatment needs covered. Everyone in the family has a role in the process, from initial meeting to project completion. Jamie meets with the client for the initial design consultation. Robbie, her husband and co-owner, oversees the company’s commercial and outdoor projects, and Del, their oldest son - who recently joined them after 10 years of service in the Air Force - oversees installation of all projects. Together, exceptional service is the family standard.

In a recent conversation with Jamie, she recounted one of her favorite projects out in Rarity Bay that took her company in some unexpected directions. “We were brought in to address a privacy issue,” she says. “These days, newer larger homes are often situated in close proximity to each other and feature expansive windows, which was the case there. We started the project by designing and installing motorized shades throughout the home that provided the client with the privacy and light control she needed.” With initial privacy and light control concerns addressed, this “opened the door” to soft treatment needs in other rooms of the home. The client’s beautiful master bedroom suite needed not only some additional privacy but also a finishing touch that functional window treatments alone could not achieve. “Sometimes you just need to add soft elements to a room to create that extra warmth and sophistication that many of my clients are looking for today.” So, elegant draperies were designed and installed providing both the privacy and sophistication the client desired. Once the draperies were installed, one of Jamie’s favorite design opportunities arose, Custom Bedding. “The custom bedding, in this instance, duvet cover, pillow shams and decorative pillows were the finishing touches, or lipstick as I jokingly tell my clients, for an already gorgeous room” Jamie says.

February Insights From the Publisher

Love. That seems to be the traditional theme for the month of February. And yet, there are so many different types of love. We love food, we love cars, we love stores, we love vacations, movies, jokes, and so on. We love people. We love our friends and our family; those who truly make our lives worthwhile. There are those we love unconditionally; and those who love and accept us – despite our faults.

There’s romantic love; the love we show to that extra special someone that rocks our world and whom we just can’t live without – our sweethearts, our significant others, our beloved. This tends to be the traditional focus of Valentine’s Day. And, the highest love of all is Agape love. The Greek word agape is used for God’s love toward us and for the love that we should display toward one another. Some call this “charity” – as described in 1 Corinthians 13; some call it sacrificial love.

I love this East Tennessee area. I love the mountains, the trees, and the GREEN (well, it’ll be back soon)! We are blessed with scenic beauty, and (usually) mild weather. We have recreational opportunities with hiking trails in the parks and Smokies, fishing, boating and water sports on our many lakes and beautiful country drives. However, what stands out to me even more, is the people. The people who, on a daily basis, quietly and unassumingly serve one another. Tennessee truly deserves to be called the Volunteer State; there are so many who have made helping others - serving others - a way of life. It’s just what you do. I believe that is how we show love to our neighbor.

Dear children, let us not love in word or talk, but in deed and in truth. 1 John 3:18 ESV

One such example of “Love thy neighbor” is a group that I’m just getting to know; some special folks are helping the hurricane victims in Northeast Tennessee. Many of them are currently living in tents, and this group is working to acquire and equip trailers/ campers for them to live in. Check out how you can help (pg 4B). We hope to provide you with updates on their work in future issues.

So, during this challenging month with winter weather still lingering and cloudy days more the norm than sunshine, we have a bright spot to celebrate - Valentine’s Day. However you choose to show your love, I know your Valentine will appreciate any plans you took the time to make happen or any special gift you chose just for him or her.

May your Valentine’s Day be filled with joy and happiness in spite of all that is going on in the world. So, from all of us at East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, we wish all of you a very Happy Valentine’s Day and many blessings of your own.

But the project didn’t end there. Now pleased with the master bedroom, the client moved to the kitchen and dining room, where Jamie again encountered large, tall and unusually wide windows. With the motorized roller shades already addressing privacy and light control, both areas needed a “bit of softening,” as Jamie puts it. “We further refined our previous design by installing custom valances over our motorized shades in the kitchen and extra-long draperies in the dining room. Both areas required an unusual degree of precision and craftsmanship. Fortunately, we collaborate with a local workroom that handles all of our custom soft treatments. This partnership ensures a personal touch, as everything is locally made, and definitely contributes to the envisioned final design. This project and the client will always be one of my favorites. We all worked together and very hard to make the clients vision come to life.” Jamie said.

“So, can window treatments be unexpected and get tricky? Absolutely. Can the process get complicated? Absolutely, but we are blessed to work with many lovely homeowners who trust us with their homes and trust we will make the process as seamless as possible. We promise to get the job done right and are always ready to promptly respond to any client needs, even the unexpected ones.”

How Can I Convince My Partner to Get a Hearing Test?

I’ve noticed my partner can’t hear very well, both at home and when we’re out. When I indicate concern, he just says, “You’re mumbling.” How can I convince him to get tested?

Strategy for convincing stubborn loved ones that they may need a hearing aid: Begin by asking your partner if he hears other people clearly. If he responds with something like “Yes, I go to the office all day and hear everyone else,” then maybe he really can’t hear you when you’re talking. There are some people who really do mumble or are what are called “low talkers.” And sometimes at home, we try to talk to someone in another room and they aren’t listening. It’s a two-way street. If somebody says, “My partner cannot hear me,” there are things that both of you can do to fix that. I suggest you try engaging intentionally. By that, I mean to look your partner in the eyes and be clear with your message. This is a technique you can both use. For example, she can say “Adam, I have something important to tell you.” Now that she’s got his attention, she continues. “We have dinner tomorrow night at 7 p.m. You cannot be late.” He’ll say, “All right. I’ve heard you.”

On the other hand, your partner might very well be hard of hearing. About 1 in 3 people ages 65 to 74 and nearly half of those over 75 have diminished hearing. The reason some people get angry when you ask about their hearing is because they’re embarrassed.

They’re upset. They feel like they’re getting older. So, it’s important to approach your partner in a context that he might appreciate.

Hearing tests are really important because we know for a fact that people who can’t hear well often become disengaged. Lack of hearing can turn into isolation. It can increase feelings of anxiety and depression. It can affect your balance, which can lead to an increased risk of falling. And the risk of dementia rises. You can end by saying, “For all these reasons and because I want us to stay engaged with each other, I’d like you to get a hearing test.”

Every single piece of data says that if hearing aids are going to be helpful, the earlier and younger you start with them, the more effective your experience will be. When patients in their 50s and 60s tell me they have hearing loss, I encourage them to get a hearing device right away.

It’s a good thing that you’re willing to talk with your partner about his hearing. You don’t want to miss out on engaging with him, whether it’s small talk or a big issue. When you address your partner’s hearing issue with empathy and facts, he’ll more likely be able to hear what you’re saying.

Call us today to schedule a FREE hearing test and get back to “mumble-free” conversations.

The Most Important Word in Any Language?

The idea you, I, and people everywhere think we understand is also the most used / misused word known. Googling it, we’re surprised and dismayed to not find it anywhere among “the most important words to know” in English or any other language. Throughout time, scholars and theologians have tried defining it so a universal understanding could be established. However, after 5 or 6 millennia, the jury is still out on a definition of this ever-elusive term. Billions of lives have been dedicated to and immersed in ‘it’ while some rarely experience it. Have you guessed this important word or idea yet?

Big clue: every February much of the world celebrates this “idea” on the 14th, a day honoring a 5th Century man who gave his life because of his love for Jesus Christ. Roman Emperor Claudius II imprisoned and executed possibly the same man, Valentine, for not worshipping him, Claudius. While awaiting death, Valentine befriends Anne, Claudius’s daughter, stricken blind at birth. After healing her blindness, he left a note she reads eventually with her new sight: “with love. from Valentine.” His love was neither romantic nor emotional, but one the Greeks call agape. Unlike generic love, agape has a specific meaning: “the love of God for humans and of humans for God.” Agape is the same love God’s Son taught, demonstrated, sacrificed, and suffered for –so we might all receive this highest love. Jesus lived a perfect life; He literally sacrificed out of agape for all His children. Jesus’s love creates amazing results & relationships between us and Him, and among all followers. Believers in Christ (according to John 3:16) will be saved forever by accepting Jesus as their lord and savior.

“The love of God that surpasses all understanding” motivated Jesus throughout His life. His sacrificial love motivates us to not “eat, drink, and be merry” but to live and love in community - practicing agape, God’s love. None of us can define true love, but Jesus defined it by willingly dying from torture, forgiving those who impaled His feet & hands. His perfect life paid the price so we can appear perfect in God’s eyes.

First Baptist Church of Tellico Village is a community where agape is practiced in a family setting not just on Sundays, but every day (including 6pm dinners most Wednesdays). Pastor David Talley is currently teaching on the Book of Acts, but underlying every biblical message, scripture, or book is the love Jesus left us. What it looks,

WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT?

You’ve all probably heard that classic Tina Turner hit “What’s Love Got to do With It?” Tina Turner was a favorite of mine as was this song. And in this season of “love” with Valentine’s day right around the corner we are all perhaps wondering what DOES love have to do with it? What does love have to do with anything?

Sometimes in this world of ours with deep political divisions, with nations at war, and with death and destruction in so many places it’s oftentimes difficult to comprehend that there is a shred of love left anywhere. But you really don’t have to go far to find love ….

Love is all around us! Love is in the songs on the radio. Love is in the kiss from your grandchild. Love is in the caring hands of a doctor or nurse when you are needing care. Love is the person who is kind enough to hold the door open for you when your arms are full of packages. Love is a friend bringing dinner over when you are not feeling well. Love is a neighbor taking time to talk when you are feeling down. Get the idea? You can probably add you own lists of things here as well.

As we go about our daily life, feeling disillusioned, sad, or depressed at times take heart. For even on the darkest days there is a beacon of hope in all that surrounds us! What’s love got to do with? Everything!

shepherdofthelaketn.org

sounds, and feels like to “love one another” is our mission not just on St. Valentine’s Day but throughout our time in God’s creation. Pastor Talley and our entire FBC family welcome you to visit and perhaps become a part of our community; a community of Jesus lovers, where agape is lived every moment of every day 365 days a year.

Uncle Bush’s Live Funeral

It must have been a slow day in Loudon in 1938 when Felix Breazeale came in from the country to make a very bizarre request at the Quinn Funeral Home on Wharf Street. What undertaker Frank Quinn and his young son-in-law Buddy Robinson encountered was a grizzly, bearded old man in overalls, accompanied by his 17-year-old mule. Felix was known out in the Cave Creek community as “Uncle Bush,” an eccentric hermit many feared for his unusual ways, and the fact he’d once been charged with murdering a man over an old Civil War grudge. The bizarre part of the request was that Bush wanted to have his funeral before he died, so he could witness who would show up and what they would say about him.

Frank Quinn already had quite a resume for himself before this opportunity arose. As a young man he worked in the Dayton, Ohio bicycle shop of Orville and Wilbur Wright, the men credited with flying the first airplane. As a small boy, I knew Mr. Quinn when he worked at Greer’s part time, mostly on days there was no funeral to arrange. He had an iron grip, seemingly enjoying the sight of bigger men in pain over a casual handshake. He claimed it was from his days stretching canvas for airplane wings under the tutelage of the Wright Brothers. Many funeral homes would have turned down a request for a live funeral without a corpse, but Quinn was a different kind of fellow. He agreed to do it and provided the means for Breazeale to help promote the event. Uncle Bush said he wanted it to be a “party” which everyone could attend.

Mr. A. Summers was a newspaper man from Kingston who offered to publicize the funeral. According to legend Bush went on the radio and talked about his funeral party. Soon the word got around about the unusual last rites and how it might be carried out. A lot of preparation was put into planning. As the saying goes today, the story “went viral,” not just around Loudon but throughout East Tennessee and beyond. Eventually Associated Press covered it, as did U.P.I. and Life Magazine. Breazeale bought a new suit in Knoxville, after wearing only dirty overalls the past 70 years.

On June 26, 1938, the hearse departed Loudon, driven by Quinn’s able assistant Buddy Robinson. Uncle Bush had crafted a handmade walnut coffin, but he did not lay in it, preferring to sit in the front seat and be seen “parade style.” When the procession arrived at Cave Creek Cemetery, a tremendous crowd of over 8,000 onlookers filled the graveyard, their cars lined up along the road for miles. Some estimates suggest it was closer to 12,000 attendees, arriving from 14 different states. The singers were chosen with care and drove in from Chattanooga and Knoxville.

After the sermon the Friendly Eight Octette sang “On Jordan’s Stormy Banks I Stand,” as specially requested by the non-deceased. Bush was pleased with all the attention, the circus atmosphere and the complimentary eulogies and testimonials. It made national news as the largest attended event ever held in Roane or Loudon County. It was suggested it become an annual celebration, but Bush replied, “that was my last funeral. When I die, I don’t want one. It was mighty nice, and I sure enjoyed it.” His request was honored in 1943 when a simple graveside observance of his actual death was only attended by 4 or 5 people. The gravestone reads “FELIX BUSH BREAZEALE - HE ATTENDED HIS OWN FUNERAL JUNE 26, 1938 - FIVE YEARS BEFORE HIS DEATH.”

In recent years, the great granddaughter of Frank Quinn, and granddaughter of Buddy Robinson was engaged to a young man who thought this story needed to be shared beyond the street conversations of Loudon. Scott Seeke not only wrote a book about the live funeral but also approached film makers to take it one step further. The result is “Get Low,” a movie that tells the story but brings a lot of starpower to the epic funeral. Uncle Bush Breazeale is played by the legendary actor Robert Duvall, and Frank Quinn is represented by comedian/actor Bill Murray. Sissy Spacek also played a role, and Buddy Robinson, the man who kept the story alive, was played by rising star Lucas Black. When it was filmed a few years ago, the outside funeral scene required, literally, a cast of thousands! Appropriately, a few of those chosen were the living descendents of Frank Quinn and Buddy Robinson.

Keener told Cheryl and I in the beginning; “Enjoy the process” and we tried to do just that. Several folks at Keener Homes have also become what I hope to be lifelong friends which says a lot about how the process went. Especially since Covid had just started to pop its ugly head up, right about the time we started to build. We did see some material delays and some scheduling issues, but nothing that caused our build to go outside of the initial estimates. Even the suppliers they connected us with were very professional, honest, and trustworthy. Several of the suppliers made suggestions that allowed us to come in under budget, which ultimately allowed us to splurge on other areas like appliances, countertops, and cabinets. In the end, we have a home that we are thrilled with, proud to have friends and family visit and a home that we see ourselves in through the rest of our lives. I can say for certain that there are not too many areas in which another builder can outshine Keener Homes because we cannot imagine the process going any smoother than it did.

Thank you, Kit, Dona, Krisha, Derek, and all the incredible partners you have developed throughout Southeastern Tennessee in the 30

WHAT’S IN THE RETIREMENT CARDS FOR 2025?

If you’re nearing retirement (or already enjoying it), 2025 is shaping up to be an important year for your savings strategy. A series of new rules and potential tax law changes could bring fresh opportunities—and a few complications. Here’s a quick rundown of what to expect:

1. Greater Contribution Allowances

Starting in 2025, workers who are at least 50 years old can add an extra $7,500 to their employer-sponsored retirement accounts in addition to the baseline $23,500. However, individuals who turn 60, 61, 62, or 63 by year’s end may contribute even more—up to $11,250 in additional “catch-up” contributions. The changes also affect SIMPLE IRAs, though with smaller limits.

2. Possible Tax Code Overhauls

With new leadership comes new legislation. Adding to the suspense, many provisions from our current Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) are due to expire at the end of 2025. With a lot of conversation around a potentially sweeping

(expensive) tax bill extension, be prepared for some congressional fireworks.

3. Expanded Roth Options Lawmakers often turn to Roth accounts for immediate revenue (since contributions are non-deductible), so plan on seeing more Roth offerings on the horizon. We already have Roth SEP and SIMPLE IRAs thanks to the SECURE Act 2.0, and required Roth catch-up contributions are set to go into effect in 2026 for high-income earners. While my clients ask me if I see tax-free Roth’s going away anytime soon, I say keep an eye out for additional Roth opportunities as Congress looks for ways to boost revenue right now.

4. New and Updated Regulations

We FINALLY hav e clarity from the IRS that, starting in 2025, non-spouse Inherited IRA beneficiaries will have to take annual required minimum distributions (RMDs) during their 10-year payout window, if the de ceased had already started taking RMD’s. This is a big deal and can’t be missed without paying a tax penalty.

There are new rules unique to spouse beneficiaries as well, that can help lower or defer taxable RMD income to them.

For years, you’ve worked on building up retirement funds. And just as importantly, your focus should be shifting to tax-efficient withdrawal strategies. Why give away your retirement savings to taxes simply from lack of knowledge? With all these changes in play, 2025 could be your chance to fine-tune your approach and make the most of your retirement savings.

East Tennessee Area Beauty: Backyard Birds in Snow

Photographing the beauty of Tennessee, and the wildlife who call it home.

Ijust wanted to share some of our Tennessee backyard birds in the snow. To be a bird, you have to be tough. They have special ways to keep themselves warm in such cold weather; they will often eat more in cold weather to help produce body heat and huddle together. Their bodies are just simply made to help with cold conditions; they have soft down feathers that help trap heat and special scales on their feet and legs to minimize heat loss. I love when it snows, and I love the opportunity it brings with bird photography. People often ask how I achieve images like these; having a 100-400mm canon lens helps me seem closer to the bird than I actually am, but there are other techniques included. I often sit in a ground blind in a location in my yard where I have studied where birds usually land. In my images, you might notice that I seem really close to the ground; that’s because I’m usually laying on my stomach which gives a much better perspective of the birds. Bird photography isn’t easy but it’s always worth it and just enjoyable.

In the Garden February

Ah, winter in East Tennessee - the time of year when your garden is “sleeping” but your to-do list is growing. While it’s easy to assume that your gardening days are over until the daffodils start to poke their heads up, there’s actually quite a bit of work to be done in the winter months. Let’s take a look at what you can tackle in your garden when the temperature dips but your green thumb still needs a little exercise.

1. Keep an Eye on the Weather (and Your Plants)

First things first: Winter in Zone 7B is unpredictable. One day, it’s a balmy 50°F, and the next day, there’s a foot of snow. It’s important to keep an eye on the forecast and be prepared for whatever weather comes. If cold snaps extend to the point where they are no longer a snap, some borderline plants may be damaged. What can you do to protect your plants?

» Deciduous shrubs can be covered if they are not zone hardy. Please remember that coverings should extend to the ground and should not be plastic. Covers should also be removed when the sun comes up.

» Perennials can be covered with leaves, straw, or the branches of your Christmas tree. Snow makes an excellent blanket as well. Call if you have questions.

2. Cut Back Dead Growth (But Don’t Overdo It)

Winter is a great time to prune, but be careful not to go too crazy. Yes, it’s tempting to cut back everything, but be patient. Certain plants, like ornamental grasses or perennials, can provide some much-needed winter interest. In addition, they provide winter homes for bees and other beneficial insects.

You can cut back dead or diseased branches and overgrown areas on deciduous trees and shrubs. Most evergreen trees and shrubs can be pruned as well. Do not cut back spring blooming trees and shrubs, Hydrangea macrophylla, gardenias, or trees that will weep sap. Please do NOT commit Crepe Murder! A good rule of thumb: If you’re not sure whether to prune, leave it be.

3. Check for Winter Damage

As the weather gets colder, your plants might start showing signs of stress. Are your perennials suffering from frost heaving (when the roots are exposed after the soil freezes and thaws repeatedly)? Are any stems looking especially sad? Winter damage can sometimes be hard to spot, but a quick walk through your garden every few weeks will help you catch any issues early.

If you notice frost heaving, gently push the soil back around the plant. If foliage is looking rough, don’t hurry to cut it back as that old foliage helps to protect the “baby” foliage as it emerges.

4. Mulch, Mulch, Mulch

Mulch is your garden’s best friend. If you didn’t get around to mulching in the fall (me neither), now’s the time to do it. A thick layer of mulch insulates your soil, preventing it from freezing and thawing too rapidly. It also helps retain moisture, keeping your plants hydrated and happy. Plus, it just looks nice.

Don’t use just any mulch, though. Go for organic materials like wood mulch, shredded leaves, or straw. These will break down over time and feed your soil - it’s like giving your plants a healthy snack to get them through the winter.

5. Feed the Birds

Winter gardening isn’t just about tending to your plants; it’s about taking care of the wildlife that might be using your garden as a little winter retreat. Set up bird feeders

6. Plan for Spring (It’s Closer Than You Think)

Here’s the fun part - winter is the perfect time to start dreaming about next year’s garden. Take some time to plan out your spring garden. Browse seed catalogs, check the internet, or binge watch gardening shows and think about what you want to plant. Are you looking to add more flowers for pollinators? Maybe a vegetable garden is in your future? Now is the time to make a list and stop in to make sure the plants you have chosen are actually the right plant for the right place.

So, there you have it! Winter gardening chores in our zone may not be as fun as playing in the dirt, but they’re important nonetheless. Stop in if you need guidance. See you soon!

Pet Urine, Spills, and Your Expensive Oriental Rug!

You ve hand-picked the perfect Oriental rug for your living space. Then, oops, a spill happens, or you discover a wet spot left as a special gift from your beloved pet! Not only can the spill or urine harm the rug, it can also do significant damage to your floor underneath the rug. What do you do?

There are a couple of things you can do. First, before the inevitable wet spot even happens, call Kerry at Superior Rug Cleaning (865-691-5686) to have a custom rug pad installed under your rug. It’s important to use a rug pad that protects you, your floors, and your rug. The wrong rug pad can cause damage to the floors, allow the rug to slip, roll, and slide, and might even be toxic. Superior Rug Cleaning installs pads that are waterproof, pet and child friendly, odorless, and are guaranteed washable for the life of the rug.

Second, if have a current spill or pet urine stain that you are dealing with, Kerry recommends you do the following:

1. Soak up the urine or spill immediately or as soon as possible.

2. Spray the area with a product called, Nature s Miracle (Liquid). This is one of the best products I have found for these types of spills. (Available for consumer purchase in stores.)

3. Blot the area and repeat spraying with Nature’s Miracle, if needed

4. Spray the area with water and blot

If these steps don’t get the area cleaned, call me at Superior Rug Cleaning - 865691-5686. Many times, urine that has been there awhile will not come out with regular cleaning, it must be flushed professionally with special cleaning agents designed to remove the urea salts and ammonia smell. Sometimes even the yellow stain can lighten up. Launched in 1985, for over 39 years Superior Rug Cleaning has focused specifically on pursuing and investing in new, state-of-the-art technology specifically to ensure your heirloom Oriental rug maintains its original beauty and quality. The Tailored Closet offers custom cubbies, lockers, and shelves to provide storage for each family member, while hooks and racks keep frequently used items within easy reach.

A mudroom isn’t just about storage—it’s also about creating a welcoming environment. Adding stylish finishes, durable flooring, and design elements that complement your home’s aesthetic can make the entryway a space you’re proud to showcase.

A Valentine for Caregivers

Diane strever For our plaCe

Welcome back to the Our PLACE monthly update. A huge thank you to all of our 2024 supporters of Our PLACE. Since opening in 2022, Our PLACE has provided participants in our day program with over 26,000 hours of person-centered care. This means their caregivers have also received 26,000 hours of respite to attend appointments, run errands, work, or relax. We currently have participant openings, so if you have a loved one, friend, or neighbor who would benefit from our adult day center program, share our information. Please save the date for our Gala on May 18, 2025; more details will follow next month. Later in this article, we will again share the life of our “Moment of Joy” individual who attends our program.

I recently watched the Netflix series “Man on the Inside,” featuring Ted Danson undercover in a senior residence to solve a mystery. He befriends several residents, especially Gladys, who has dementia. A poignant scene shows a celebration where everyone is chatting and laughing while Gladys sits alone, looking forlorn and unacknowledged.

It can be uncomfortable for us, as family or friends, to know how to interact, or what to say, to someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Not only do we pull away from that person, but from the caregiver as well. Memory diseases are the most isolating of chronic ailments, so we are fortunate to have a program such as Our PLACE, here in Loudon County, which combats that isolation and loneliness. Participants create friendships, a sense of community, and are engaged in music, crafts, and exercise. They are encouraged by staff, volunteers, and each other to try new experiences, which leads to a greater sense of confidence and happiness.

As you think about Valentine’s Day, consider reaching out to a family dealing with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Tell them about Our PLACE and suggest a visit. As a friend, find a time to call a caregiver or drop by for coffee. Take them to lunch to let them know they are not forgotten in the 24/7 demands of their life.

Ed, one of the newest participants at Our PLACE, is our “Moment of Joy” individual this month. Ed and his wife recently moved with their daughter and son-in-law to Tellico Village from New York. They learned about Our PLACE at the Tellico Village Visitor’s Center, and visited to see if it was a good fit for Ed. They had checked facilities and knew they had found a terrific program, something that wasn’t available in New York. Ed’s wife fell in love with him when he asked her to dance; she was impressed with his expertise! Ed worked first for WOR Radio, often getting on the roof to adjust the radio antennas. He became a safety officer for IBM in the Albany area. After retiring, Ed worked the line at the family candy company. As he sorted the chocolates to be boxed, he’d place the “imperfections” in a bag and take them to the local senior center, where he was adored!

At Our PLACE, Ed loves talking with people, and enjoys music and crafts. His family knows he is in a safe environment, and the program allows his wife and children downtime from Ed’s 24/7 care. Ed is a vibrant and sparkling personality and loves to share his life’s experiences. His smile is truly a “Moment of Joy!”

Our PLACE is the only independent, nonprofit adult day center in East Tennessee. We provide person-centered care and dementia-specific therapies and interventions for adults while supporting their families and caregivers through respite, support groups, education, and resources, creating more “Moments of Joy” for these adults and their caregivers. For more information, call our Executive Director, Sarah Martin, at 865-657-7222 or visit www.ourplacetn.org.
