We are on a mission to reconnect people with nature

We believe that as a society we have become far too disconnected from our food and the land it comes from.

But change is afoot.

At The Ethical Butcher we are changing how animals and humans coexist in the food chain and how we view our place in nature. Our farmers honour natural systems and farm in ways that increase biodiversity and regenerate the land, having a positive impact on the British countryside, animal welfare and, of course, the people who eat their meat.

Many of our farmers have measured a net loss of carbon as a result of the methods they employ, improving soil health and combating climate change. We believe all farming should be like this, so a proportion of our profits are channelled into training more farmers in regenerative techniques so that good meat is more widely available.

Our farmers are our family

We don’t see our farmers as our suppliers, we see them as our partners. We pay them fairly, and we work with them to find ways to manage their land that are better for the planet, better for the animals and more financially sustainable.

Our aim is to make it possible for more farmers to work in regenerative way whilst feeling supported both financially and personally.

Rosie Ball — Fowlescombe Farm, Devon

Rosie Ball is the farm manager at Fowlescombe Farm which has been under new ownership for 18 months but has been organic for over 20 years. Rosie has a degree in Conservation Biology and brings this knowledge to farm management working towards a full regenerative system with no external inputs.

Rare breed, organic pasture raised beef and sheep. 100 cattle and 250 sheep. English Longhorn cattle and Manx Loaghtan sheep.

Why grass fed is better for people and planet The simple ingredient that our business is built around. Grasses evolved to be grazed and grazers evolved to eat grasses, that’s a mouthful but it helps us to understand the fundamental importance of the interconnectedness of systems in nature.

Grass fed meat is also healthier for us as humans because it’s the natural diet of cows and sheep. It has higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids and a lower, more balanced ratio of omega-6:omega-3 fatty acids. Grass fed meat also contains higher vitamin and mineral levels than meat from grain-fed animals. Grass is readily available and a natural diet for many of the breeds our farms rear, it just makes sense.

We hold ourselves to extremely high standards.

High standards of animal welfare, high standards of nutrition and high standards of environmental practices. Each decision we make is made carefully and with as much information as we can possibly find to back it up. If we made quick decisions just so we could sell more stuff we wouldn’t be who we are.

These high standards stem from the passion and dedication of our founders Farshad Kazemian and Glen Burrows. Farshad has worked in the meat industry for most of his career and noticed that change was desperately needed. Glen, a former vegetarian of 25 years, is a photographer and film maker with a passion for health and regenerative agriculture.

Together, they are reinventing the meat industry.

It’s not the cow it’s the how

Meat gets a lot of stick but what is frequently left out is the fact that it’s not the cow it’s the how. The way animals are reared has significant impact on the flavour of the meat, its nutritional value and the environment. Meat that is produced using regenerative methods just isn’t comparable to factory farmed meat.

Each decision we make at The Ethical Butcher is made with both the environment, animal welfare and human health front of mind.

We want to encourage positive conversation around where our food comes from and alter the narrative around meat being ‘bad’ for the environment.
