AN URBAN LIBRARY

The library is the only space that is truly public. What does this mean and why does Jackson require it?

While the city has buildings without life, the idea of repurposing the current public library and placing it at the heart of downtown could increase foot traffic. The site includes a mall that faces the courtyard, and the other sides of the courtyard are blank walls. Part of this project is to break those walls, creating more active spaces that take advantage of the existing courtyard.

The library is a church without authority and a public home. It is important to combine the ideas of comfort and security from a dwelling with the public nature of a church. These ideas help shape the form and programming of this library. The ground level of the library gets set back to have an overhang, encouraging security, while the upper level may include private reading rooms that look atop of the trees

East Capital Street courtyard has a Fedex, and a law firm. This project suggests that sometimes a city may require the relocation and replacement of a building, so the site can maximize its potential. The two buildings could be replaced in a number of spots around the city in close parameter, in order to benefit the community. While Jackson has abandoned buildings that could turn into an adaptive reuse project, its important to note that that method of change alone will not solve all of its issues. This project is not an adaptive reuse of an empty building, but an adaptive reuse of public space. The urban library can add invaluable resources to Jackson and its residents while also create a point of intrest in the heart of town.

PAPER TO CONCEPT

The form acts as a frame for the courtyard, capturing it and breaking walls. The exterior corner turns only on the top and bottom, shaping a void. The interior corner uses the existing building by stretching it into that same void. The interior spaces are derived from bounced light to target certain spaces. Glare is something that can ruin a space, so deleting it is emphasized. The angled form that has punched openings into the void acts subsequently as the structure for the frame. This allows for ample light and views while also creating a sacredness to the circulation. The sleek limestone frame feels pertinent when being held up by a more structural, rugged concrete. At times the concrete walls may be exposed, and at others they may be cladded to change the effect of the space.
