ETCHED in time

The creation of an Arts Edition for Etched each year is a choice opportunity.

The process provides my dominant right-brain with a ‘free pass’ to ignore its counterpart (temporarily, anyway). Honestly, I delight in giving myself permission to mentally wander while working. Putting the content together requires partaking of new art experiences while meeting fascinating and talented people. But let me be candid: constructing an issue focused on art is also a challenge. I am not an artist and my knowledge of it is quite ‘basic’. I do own several pieces of art. When I purchase it, I do so for one reason, because I like it. Through the eye of an artist I can revisit the ‘ordinary’ while discovering it is extraordinary.

For centuries, seven forms of art were acknowledged as being such; architecture, sculpture, painting, literature, music, performing, and film.

Around the time when the twentieth century reached mid-life, the evolution of that which was defined as art exploded. Arrive the 1960s and ‘70s: land artists, leather carvers, and macramé makers. The perpetual revolution continues; graffiti painters, fabricators, carpenters, graphic designers, baristas with their ability to “blend and brew,” and the audaciously elusive artists who hide their identity while creating provocative work in public places. The glass ceiling has been shattered on defining art.

We enter into the creative process of building Etched’s Art’s Edition with no expectations and an open mind. Our team refers to this approach as “manifesting.” I turn to the great Impressionist painter, Vincent van Gogh, for a bit of validation when he said, “Normality is a paved road: It’s comfortable to walk, but no flowers grow on it.” And that is how this issue of Etched came to be.

What lies in the pages of this Arts Edition is built upon chance. Artist Tom Wheeler, who thirty years ago had his work in a Laguna Beach gallery which my mother ran, and I reconnected during an art auction in Springdale, Utah. Writer, artist, and filmmaker, Robert Perkins and I met along the side of a backroad while I was searching for inspiration from Mother Nature. And then there’s Jenny Christiansen and Mike Ryan, two artists I became familiar with at Art Works Gallery only to discover I already owned pieces by both of them. Call it chance, serendipitous, or manifestation, there is a story behind each story. These “opportunities” were no accident. What this team at Etched does to create each issue, from layout to sales, is all a work of art.

So, maybe I am an artist after all. Outside of the magazine, I “work” in an array of mediums: river rock; antique colored glass (hand-picked from old dump sites); brightly colored craft paint; and fine point “Sharpie”. I am wildly talented in the form of rudimentary skill. My creative outlet could be the next absurd artistic style morphed into something collectible. I appreciate the courage of my right-brain. For nothing ventured is nothing gained.

EXHIBITION OF TRADITIONAL OILS MAY 10 - JUNE 7, 2019

Oil Painters of America's is pleased to announce that the Twenty-Eighth National Exhibition and Convention will be hosted by Illume Gallery of Fine Art, located in St. George, Utah, from May 10 through June 7, 2019. Convention activities begin on May 6, with a Wet Paint Competition in both studio and plein air divisions.

Cash and merchandise awards for the Wet Paint competition will be a minimum of $10,000. The opening reception for artists, collectors, the public and the press will be held on Friday, May 10, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with the awards presentation taking place at 7:30 p.m. Many informative and educational seminars are being planned for the convention, preceding the opening of the exhibition.

has worked as a full-time photo-journalist, wedding and portrait photographer since 1993, earning industry awards and recognition for artistic excellence. With a degree in Anthropology from Berkeley, he has traveled the world photographing clients and has taught photography in the US and Europe. A seasoned musician, Nick sings and plays guitar in bands of notoriety, performing on the Warped Tour and at the House of Blues. Nick lives in St. George with his wife and creative partner Signe Adams.

Lori’s latest project is a budding divorce recovery coaching program. She lives her life very much in the moment and believes every day is a gift to be appreciated and lived to the fullest.

TOM BENNETT is a curious soul with an insatiable desire to explore.

Tom is also a talented musician. As a one-man band, Tom has spent much of his life traveling the country. If counting, he has performed over 2,000 shows in 40 states and has released three records under his own label, Sweet Salt Records, and is the founder of The Colorado City Music Festival in Hildale, Utah. In his spare time, he is a ‘Squatcher’ (Sasquatch enthusiast), a student of wold religion, and rides his Harley Davidson.

Awaken to Everyday Magic written by CINDY CLEMENS

I am fascinated by stories of people who take big bold steps and “go rogue”—make a major career change, relocate to a place of their dreams, or go back to school mid-life.

Having done one of these big life shake-ups, I know how satisfying it can be to consciously take a less-traveled life path. Although scary and a bit daunting, it does feel magical to be the architect of one’s own fate.

The great news is we do not have to wait for a major decision to take the road less traveled. Many of our daily activities can actually be done in new and different ways. For example, we can shop in the reverse direction at the grocery store, drive home along a different street, have breakfast for dinner, or even order dessert first.

The trick is to make a conscious decision to shake things up and try a new option.

Perhaps you are wondering if this idea of going rogue in small daily tasks is worth the effort. Does it really make a difference and give us a new perspective? I’ve found it is beneficial in many ways: n We experience a refreshing sense of freedom. A simple change in our daily routine can remind us that all of life is a choice, and we are only one decision away from a new direction.

n We awaken to the magic that is all around us. Remember what it was like when you saw Disneyland or the Grand Canyon for the first time? I bet you were swept up in the wonder of the moment and fully absorbed it with your senses. Trying new options, routes, and vistas connect us with a beginner’s eye and reconnects us with that magic of wonder. n We feed our curiosity. When we allow ourselves to see how it feels to do something a different way, side paths and detours appear that we might have missed if we had stayed stuck on auto-pilot. n We escape from thinking there is only one way to do things and become more flexible. As one of my favorite mantras reminds us, “blessed are the flexible for they shall not be bent out of shape.”

Recently I gave this a try. I have a pretty set path that I walk across the street from my house in the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve. As I thought about writing this article, I decided to walk my path backward. I was amazed by the new things I saw. I even observed a sliver of Quail Lake Reservoir in the distance that I had never noticed. By having to think a bit more about where I was going, it seemed like I was more in the present moment observing my surroundings instead of being stuck in my thoughts.

The most important thing is to keep moving, in any direction. A fork in the road, a set of choices, does not need to be seen as a formidable obstacle. Once you make a decision and follow your own heart, you will get more comfortable with the process. You’ll realize there are rarely wrong choices—each possible path brings its own rewards, lessons, and challenges. The only wrong choice is to make no choice and stay stuck at the crossroad.

The best way to be ready for the major forks in the road is to get familiar with the magic of less traveled pathways in smaller life choices. So here is a challenge. The next time a path before you splits into two options, pause and think about the wise words of Yogi Berra. “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.”

There is a jewel box of an art gallery and a museum tucked inside the Delores Dore Eccles Fine Arts Center on the Dixie State University campus. The DSU Sears Art Museum is a delightful addition to the southern Utah community with its intriguing and thoughtprovoking exhibits. They offer six exhibits each year featuring art styles from traditional to contemporary, offering DSU students and visitors educational and enjoyment opportunities.

Their mission statement says it all. “The DSU Sears Art Museum engages visitors in discovering meaningful connections with artistic expressions and presents opportunities for conversation, contemplation, and a cooperative experience.”

The Sears Art Museum has been a part of the University since 2004, thanks to the generous donors, Robert N. & Peggy Sears. They have since passed away, but their legacy lives on in the beautiful space they envisioned and in their art collection that is the cornerstone of the DSU Permanent Art Collection. The museum depends on the annual fundraiser, the Sears Dixie Invitational Art Show and Sale.

Every President’s Day weekend in February, this beautiful space hosts the event. For 32 years, this event and sale have garnered respect and popularity with approximately 100 invited artists and 200 paintings.

It has become very popular with patrons who vie for the paintings they wish to purchase.

In terms of the six exhibits the museum features, Museum director, Kathy Cieslewicz, strives to offer unique experiences, featuring the diversity of artists, styles, and context. Here are a few examples of recent exhibits:

MAPPING: The Poetics of Utah Expression

Selected Utah contemporary artists were asked by Cieslewicz to take on the idea of mapping intersections in our lives, locations, and logic. The resulting focus to create philosophical essays in paint and other art forms brought to mind the issue of sorting out the reactions and restraints we all make in life. This nonobjective art may not bend to systemic theory; however, patrons were sure to react emotionally to the poetic visual expressions and become obsessed with the process, patterns, and profound perspectives.

Another recent exhibit was by an artist that has recently moved from southern Utah to California, Fiona Phillips. The opening included a very profoundly educated Art Therapy Panel. The context of Phillip’s art is to educate viewers to avoid using stigmas concerning those who suffer from mental problems. Approximately one in five adults in Utah are experiencing the invisible challenge of mental illness.

Fiona’s work seeks to examine people’s perception of the “Face” of mental illness: what does a mentally ill person look like and how does one perceive health by appearance?

Stigmatized misperception of the mentally ill can be barriers to healing. Her portrait paintings are large and accompanied by an anonymous “ID Badge.” Each badge states a stigma or slang word identifying the person as mentally ill or healthy and other statements to confront the viewer with image through the juxtaposition of connotation and denotation.

Many community groups, DSU classes, as well as elementary through high school classes toured as Cieslewicz pointed out not only the artistic merit, but ways to change their thinking and behavior.

LEO KRIKORIAN This exhibit is an example of learning in the context of art and the history of the Beat Generation. This was a period roughly between 1950 and 1960. Leo Krikorian was one of America’s great painters and photographers. Born in California in 1922, he grew up during the Depression years and learned not only about hard work but also of compassion and generosity. Leo studied photography and art after World War II under such tutors as Ansel Adams, Josef Alber, Ilya Bolotowsky and Miner White. He lived in Paris, France for many years while dedicating his time exclusively to his work. The precise craftsmanship, skill, and beauty of his pure abstract work show he had extensive learning of the principles of design and color theory. Leo’s artwork has been exhibited in major cities throughout the world and is currently displayed in many major museums around the globe including the Smithsonian.

There is a wonderful documentary by PBS about Krikorian and this fascinating period.

These are just a few recent examples of what the Sears Art Museum has to offer. It is a beautiful environment to contemplate captivating works of art and enjoy this gift to our community. Through the generosity and vision of Robert and Peggy Sears and their family, Dixie State Museum and southern Utah has a museum and gallery that is world class.

COLOR That Won’t Be “OVERLOOKED” THE ART OF JENNY CHRISTIANSEN AND MIKE RYAN written by DARCI HANSEN | photographed by NICK ADAMS

“I believe that it’s better to be looked over than it is to be overlooked.” – Mae West A painting by Jenny Christiansen or Mike “Ryno” Ryan is hard to miss. The excitingly vibrant colors saturated with an effervescent sense of life energetically holler, “Look at me!” And not in a pretentious way. But with a magnetism that the eye can’t deny. Kind of like the artists themselves.

Jenny and “Ryno” (the nickname by which Mike signs his art) reside in the rustic community of Virgin, a small town with deep roots in southern Utah. Surrounded by the vermillion cliffs along the route to Zion National Park, there is no lack of inspiration from any viewpoint.

Both artists are lighthearted and free-spirited. Mike, a painter, and Jenny, who makes jewelry as well as paints, travel together throughout the West, “…creating visual journals of their time spent in wild places.” Adventurous by nature, both Jenny and Mike utilize their talents as an expression of the life they live “in full color”.

The two have embarked on a unique endeavor of sharing the same canvas, or in their case, birch wood panels. Ryno begins with his rather loose, impressionistic style of painting sweeping landscapes accompanied by signature vintage objects including old signage and vehicles. Jenny follows behind, creating stylized bouquets of succulents and florals, reminiscent of the vegetation that miraculously rises from the barren desert’s floor.

“I fell in love with their art immediately,” shared Linda Kiley, a gallerist and owner of Art Works. Her gallery is located in the heart of Cedar City and in close proximity to Southern Utah University and the Utah Shakespeare Festival. The streets here are filled with charming boutiques, a winery, and interesting venues like Art Works, known for carrying an array of art and maker’s wares from local, regional, and national artisans.

Linda had recently hung some new art that I went to see. My eyes were drawn immediately to Ryno’s work. Free in its style and light in nature, his paintings felt familiar. Equally vying for my attention were two other paintings featuring colorful cacti; the signature read, “Jenny Christiansen.”

For two hours, Linda and I sorted through her collection of their paintings, talking about what color can do for the soul. “I was drawn immediately to their work—Ryno’s for his vivid, expressionistic, southwestern subjects steeped in nostalgia, and Jenny, for her bold, authoritative use of color creating unexpected florals that come to life right off the surface. They both have a unique way of depicting subjects that have been interpreted time and time again yet manage to stand out and do something unique with each.

A little bit yin and yang, somehow their work totally melds and is stylistically compatible.”

Clearly, Linda was onto something; something Ryno and Jenny already had in motion. “As a gallerist, I battled internally as to whether I should hang their art separately or together. They’ve solved this problem for me by starting to paint collaborative subjects.”

Living with your partner is one thing; working with them day to day is another. But Jenny and Ryno do it. They do it well. Not only does this talented couple work together but they “play” together. And therein lies the key to their success.

From springtime through the summer the two attend a dozen or so art fairs, trekking the western states from Montana to Texas and everywhere in between. They share an adventurous spirit and love for nature, utilizing their work schedule as a travel itinerary, gathering creative inspiration along the way.

“That is the allure of this kind of work,” Jenny tells me. “We get to go to the beautiful tourist towns like Jackson Hole, Park City, Crested Butte, Sun Valley, and Sante Fe, so we always stick around and enjoy the area afterward by eating at the local restaurants, visiting local art galleries, recreating, and plein air painting in the national parks or open spaces nearby.”

What may appear to be a six-month road-trip, is actually a fairly grueling schedule. Taking time to get out and stretch while on the highway is something Ryno jumps for, literally. It’s a “thing’ he dubbed #jumpinginamerica on his social media. “I started jumping for my Instagram pictures when we were traveling on the road.

I’ve jumped above tourist attractions, the world’s largest chili in New Mexico, migrating buffalo statues in South Dakota, and many wildflower fields that Jenny makes me stop to admire,” he says.

Those flower-shot stops offer a powerful influence over Jenny’s vision for her paintings as well as her jewelry making. She says she finds shapes, forms, and colors in those fields. “I have always loved making things with my hands. After college, I began making jewelry for a living and have been honing my craft ever since.” Her meticulously detailed and vibrantly colored beadwork has been featured in wellknown places such as Anthropologie. Yet the shows and the traveling with Ryno are all part of the couple’s great adventure.

“Self-sustaining artists who do it ‘their way’,” is how Linda describes these two creatives. “Traveling the western USA art show circuit as a primary means to show their art, truth be told, we all might be a little envious watching them live their dream. I know from personal experience; however, this circuit demands tenacity, long days, and probably a few bad meals on the road. But, the rewards for them far outweigh all the practical considerations.”

Ryno and Jenny are basically the ‘real deal’; authentically gracious and happy humans traversing the earth manifesting nature’s beauty in the form of art. MAKING a Long Story “SHORT” BOULDER CITY’S DAM SHORT FILM FESTIVAL written by DARCI HANSEN | art & photos courtesy of DAM SHORT FILM FESTIVAL

It is more than a “dam” town. Although the birth of Boulder City, Nevada came to be during the construction of Hoover Dam, this charming community has preserved their historic roots while capitalizing on its inherent vintage style. The gentle-paced cultural evolution here has ‘raised the house lights’ on the city’s developing art scene including the inception of the Dam Short Film Festival in 2003. This annual celebration of cinematic shorts is considered to be Nevada’s largest film festival.*

The Dam Short Film Festival (DSFF) was founded by Lee and Anita Lanier. Together, their love for short films was nurtured while traveling across the United States, Canada, and even Europe to attend diversified festivals of such. Lee, who directed a half-dozen short films himself, was in the film industry working in production and computer animation. The creation of the DSFF was a grassroots endeavor that synergistically wove its way into the heart of the community. Along with Anita and founding board members Nicky Collins, a Boulder City videographer, and Kae Pohe, owner of the Hoover Dam Store, the DSFF, like the arts in the area, has continued to branch out while remaining rooted in the city’s ‘small town’ vibe.

A quick glance back in history helps to appreciate Boulder City’s lingering sense of community. When Congress decided to build a dam on the Colorado River in Black Canyon between Nevada and Arizona in 1928, they realized it would be a monumental task. The first workers on the job set up camp along the banks of the river to survive the desert’s heat and have access to water. Knowing this situation would be insufficient for the size of workforce moving in the Bureau of Reclamation selected the existing townsite which the government itself would build, calling it Boulder City.

The Boulder Dam Theater was constructed in 1931 in the center of the country’s first “planned development” community as a movie house. The theater became a hub for the workers and their families as a source of entertainment. But perhaps the biggest draw to the theater during that time was air-conditioning. It was the only building in the area to have a cooling system and a blissful reprieve from the desert’s scorching heat. The 400-seat theater was built in the center of the city and next door to what would become the Boulder Dam Hotel which was erected in 1933.

The Boulder Dam Hotel played host to many famous guests during the first decade, including; Bette Davis, honeymooners, Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt, Jr., the Duchess of Westminster, Henry Fonda, Boris Karloff, Senator Robert Taft, Shirley Temple, and Howard Hughes, who recuperated at the hotel after wrecking his airplane on Lake Mead. In 1934 Will Rogers also stayed at the hotel while performing on stage at the Boulder Theatre. And so began a long history of collaboration between the “dam” venues.

Decades later, the theater’s luster had faded and was in need of restoration. In 1999, actor/musician Desi Arnaz Jr., the son of late comedy icon Lucille Ball, and his wife, Amy, purchased the facility giving the historic structure the love and renovation that it needed.

The theater’s doors were re-opened and the building now serves as the home of the Boulder City Ballet Company as well as the DSFF. The DSFF is as unique as the town’s creation. Over 120 short films, up to 40 minutes each, are featured every year. DSFF has developed a variety of entry categories, including local Nevadan filmmaker and a music block. Other film categories include Documentary, Sci-Fi/ Horror, Animation, and Student. The public can participate in Q&A sessions with filmmakers as well as panel discussions. #ExperienceTheSouthwest

A World Away to Come and Play “According to reviews from FilmFreeway users, the Dam Short Film Festival ranks in the top 1.5% of more than 7,000 film festivals and creative contests around the world,” shared Tanya Vece, Media Director for DSFF, and has spent years in the entertainment and marketing realm. “The staff and volunteers behind DSFF see the event as far more than a cinema experience. We do so much with the film festival to not only entertain the crowds, but to empower the artist.”

In addition to hosting film premieres and experiencing some of Hollywood’s vintage ties, Boulder City also offers filmmakers and attendees the opportunity to explore the history and the natural resources in the area. The town itself has been proactive in the preservation of securing wilderness and public lands that reach out to the city limits. Those efforts are a reflection of the increasing number of recreational visitors who come to explore the area’s rugged hills, hiking and off-roading, or venturing to the waters of nearby Lake Mead and the Colorado River for kayaking and boating. For Real Estate lovers, the city center is encircled by its original buildings and housing facilities, proudly maintaining the historical integrity of the 1930s architecture.

Part of the evolving culture in Boulder City includes the many specialty shops and desirous local “hole-in-the-wall” restaurants that line its historic main street. A shimmer of nightlife also prevails as merchants and proprietors cater to visitors especially during the DSFF. Locals themselves mirror the sense of community from which Boulder City grew. “Many who have ties to Hollywood, famous producers and writers live in the alcoves of our city,” shared Tanya, who is gearing up for the 2019 festival.

John LaBooney is the Director of DSFF. “I’m always amazed at the talent who show up and the people who are visiting. They mingle for the four-days of the festival and create relationships that last forever, many of them re-meeting up the same time at the following year’s festival.”

The highlight of the DSFF is the awards ceremony and after party.

Studded with glitz and glam, the festival recognizes eight award categories that convey the diversity of the submissions including Best Drama, Best Comedy, Best Documentary, Best Animation, Best Sci-Fi / Horror, Best Music Video, Best Nevada Filmmaker, and Best Student film.

For a small town, there is a large list of reasons to appreciate the physical archives that have been integrated into the city’s daily groove. In short, it’s a “dam” cool place to hang. A MILE IN HIS SHOES

THE JOURNEY OF ARTIST TOM WHEELER written by TOM WHEELER

I am a fearless creative on a continuum of discovery. Exploration is part of the journey. As with any adventure, there are the highs and lows of unusual accomplishments and “knock you down” reversals.

Ultimately, “desire” and “necessity” direct the GPS system of the soul. I am an artist and love what I do.

My professional career has taken many different paths and forms along the way. And why shouldn’t it? For creatives, it can be challenging to absorb inspiration from a singular address. We tend to migrate towards intrigue. For me, a reoccurring aspect involving either a single event or occurrence has “rerouted” my direction of exploration more than once. Three specific examples come to mind.

The first, really the beginning of my artistic career, involved an encounter in a local rock-and-roll club in southern California when I was 19. A fellow was wearing a very unusual handmade pair of leather sandals ...

I wanted a pair. I asked him where he got them and how much they were. “Huntington Beach. $20,” was his reply.

I had just purchased a brand new pair of cowboy boots for $18. At first, my thought was, “can’t afford that,” but then I thought, “I could make myself a pair.”

I had been raised through grade school in Venezuela, South America.

Because there were no toy stores, I had learned out of desire (and necessity) to make a large variety of things to play with. My ‘selfreliance skills’ told me I could make those sandals.

Not only did I make myself a pair of very cool shoes, but I went on to make and sell handmade sandals through a variety of outlets as well as out of my panel truck at the beach, a rock nightclub, and eventually from my own leather shop. I expanded my leatherwork to include handbags, belts, hats, and anything us “hippies” were wearing during the late 1960s. My “leather adventure” included traveling about to arts and crafts shows as well as a few boutique customers I acquired from San Diego to Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas. This professional artistic endeavor suited my wandering lifestyle, so popular during that era, and allowed me to live in many wonderful places.

The second event of “chance and consequence” appeared at the invitation from a friend to attend an “Indian Art Show” in 1970. I had spent summers roaming various parts of Arizona and New Mexico and had encountered the fine craftsmanship and art of the Native American people. But this show! The collection of jewelry, rugs, pottery, beadwork, and various other art forms left me awestruck. I wanted to be involved. I wanted to learn from the people. My friend was quick to point out that: 1. I was not Native American; 2. I could not do silver work—both, pretty much a pre-requisite.

Desire (and creative necessity) led me to study the trade of silversmithing and turquoise stone cutting. I fused these skills into my leather work, evolving my designs to represent a Southwest style.

I created elaborate handbags, belts, and briefcases, all popular accessories at the time. I was deeply inspired by sand paintings of Navajo people, Kachina dolls of the Hopis, and the intricate silver jewelry by many Indigenous people. Although I could never claim to represent their culture, these artisans had such a profound effect on me personally that my work became a tribute to their style.

The 1970s across America, and especially in the Southwest, saw an evolutionary change in what had traditionally been defined as “art.”

Fine craftsmen were, in fact, creating art. The belief that “art” was bound to its historical roots of paint and sculpture began to broaden, actually stretching far beyond its previous limits. With that energy, I also saw things differently.

It became a necessity for me to address the burning desire to embrace the artistic sense of freedom present in the times. I began work on what I titled, “Piece Expressions.” Funneling my artistic skills, the carving of leather images accentuated with silver and turquoise were spread out, framed, and hung on the wall. Exercising what felt like unlimited flexibility in artistic expression, I experimented with other elements in my work including exotic woods, copper, bronze, and a larger variety of stones. This work allowed me to move my art into galleries while continuing to travel with arts and crafts shows.

Fast forward a decade or two. I landed in southern Utah on a joint venture traveling to rock and gem shows representing a rock store in Springdale. This would lead to my ‘encounter of the third kind’.

We exchanged some materials. The necessity to create never leaves an artist, it just occasionally needs a rest. While working the show, my desire was swelling to do something with that newly acquired wood. It was here that I created what I called “Stone Spirit.” The simple design combined some sliced slabs of stone I had with this beautiful wood. Ten years later, I continue to evolve the making of Stone Spirits, each possessing their own energy and life.

The life of a roaming artist can certainly appear to get off course… even go a little rogue. But as the saying goes, “Not all those who wander are lost.” Out of necessity and desire comes a life filled with wonderment, a few challenges, and endless adventure. Allowing the GPS of my soul to “reroute” my course, I am one who can say, “I’ve walked a few hundred miles in my own shoes.”

I’ve been making photographs for a living for a long time, so long I don’t even want to say, because I feel like I should be a whole lot better at it than I am. Mostly I do portrait and wedding work, but over the past few years landscapes have been showing up a lot more in my portfolio. I used to dismiss landscape photography for myself, based on the belief that producing quality landscape photography required a large format film camera, you know, the old-timey kind with a bellows on a box and a curtain to drape over your head. That was indeed the case back in the film days, and large format photography is still a beautiful thing. But modern digital cameras have eroded the large-format camera advantage.

Part of the surge of landscape images in my portfolio is due to the work I have done for Etched. Magazine assignments have taken me on long road trips through some of the most scenic lands in the west and given me opportunities for relationships with the land itself. Because the photographer cannot control the lighting on a landscape, finding the right light requires some combination of time, patience and serendipity. And I feel like there is a common thread present in my best images, whatever the subject: just a little bit of love.

As a portrait photographer, I feel like it is my job to learn to love my subject. Most people aren’t comfortable in front of the camera, so I have to develop some rapport. But at the same time, I am looking at their face, noticing their eyes, their nose, their chin, how their clothing fits on their body—all of these details matter when you are lighting and posing a person. Then, to take the image to the next level, comes the love. I have to find a spark within me. With some people it is easy, with others it is more challenging, but I always try. When it happens, when the spark is there, that’s when the best images are made, and my subject knows it too I think. I don’t know how to describe it. It’s a little magic trick, a little bit of voodoo.

PINE VALLEY The sun had gone down for good on this day, leaving just the purply-pink hues of twilight photons to land on my camera sensor. I appreciated the varied landscape—waterfilled Navajo Sandstone in the foreground, the black-red slope of a cinder cone at middle right, and the snowdusted basalt laccolith that makes up Pine Valley Mountain in the distance. I waited for traffic to clear on State Route 18, curving around the volcano.

I have found that the same idea holds true in landscape photography.

My best landscape images are the ones where I find myself part of the spirit of the landscape. The light outside becomes the light within me, and vice versa. Creativity is a finicky partner. It doesn’t always come easily when called upon. It helps to be relaxed, to slow down. In doing so, you can slow down time and enter a state of awareness that is not unlike meditation. To feel the spirit of the land, to understand that your presence in it, from its perspective, is but the blink of an eye, and you are a temporary guest. The life within the landscape—the trees, the shrubs, the animals—is an unbroken chain of a process that has converted energy from the sun into matter for hundreds of millions of years; and more recently, into things that matter, that have meaning. And that includes you. When you can feel that spirit, when you notice the little things, when the light and landscape come together and you are prepared, present and aware, that is when the best images come. At least that’s my experience.

REGENERATIVE (below) I find life in the desert fascinating. In a place like Gold Butte, with its rugged and varied landscape, life contrasts with the surrounding inorganic earth, allowing the earth more equal time. The message: we are one. The same stuff that makes up the rocks, dust, water, and air is what is inside all of us. Life is much younger than the rock surrounding it. Life is an unbroken chain spanning untold generations, linking their DNA together like a fire bucket brigade carrying liquid from a primordial swamp to the present. Living in the closed system of Earth, land, and life give their substance to the future. May the fire never be extinguished.

MANY SOULS HAVE WALKED BY HERE (right) This image is from my first visit to Gold Butte, Nevada. I was walking through a sandstone canyon and came across this face. I saw it instantly, the face in the rock. To my imagination, it was the face of ancestors from long ago. The spiral forms one eye, a light spot makes a nose and eroding layers below create a mouth. I imagine that the person who made marks in this rock hundreds of years ago saw the same thing. There is evidence of human activity in the area of Gold Butte dating back more than 12,000 years. Over millennia the stories that were etched in stone carried great meaning. Much of that meaning has been lost to time, but the spirit of their message lives on, reaching far into the future from a simpler past when lives were lived close to the Earth. From that spirit, these petroglyphs now impart new meaning. Many souls have walked by here. If you are quiet and still, you can feel their presence watching over you.

PAHRANAGAT SUNSET After a long day of driving I pulled into the campground at the Pahranagat National Wildlife Preserve in eastern Nevada. The Pahranagat Valley is one of my favorite places, an actual oasis in the Mojave Desert created by water flowing from several springs. With the reflection of the lake and the intense colors of the sunset, the only thing I needed was something unique. This awesome lenticular cloud provided something different. I like to think it was hovering right over Area 51, which is in that general direction from where I was standing.

SUCCULENT I was born in Utah, and I have a deep love for the state, but also the entire southwest. Coming from the very dry deserts of southern Utah I am always amazed by the gardens I find when I visit family in southern California. Everything just looks so healthy, I think because the conditions are so much more favorable—mild temperatures and a mist of water blowing in from the ocean conspire to create great beauty. This garden succulent was smiling at me when I made this image. I loved the contrast I found on the leaves and decided a black and white treatment would make me pretty happy.

Robert Perkins is a writer, filmmaker, and artist who lives in a rustic home, beautifully named Lazalu for all of the things in this world that are good. Lazalu consists of a few hand-built structures nestled in one of the most scenic valleys off the Kolob Terrace Road, near Zion National Park in Utah. I was going to write a story about him, but I found his own words compelling, so here is my chat with Robert from his kitchen table at Lazalu, edited for clarity. Approaching age 70, he speaks in soft, measured tones that weave thoughtful conversation.

His words are clear, personal, and artful.

NICK: What brought you to Utah?

ROBERT: A beautiful woman ... who was so smart, growing up in Provo. She got into MIT in Civil Engineering, and I met her in Boston, where I’m from.

NICK: How long ago?

ROBERT: That would have been 20 years ago ... she wanted to return to her home ground in Utah, and I said why would I want to leave Cambridge, Massachusetts, where I had a nice home and happy life?

And she said go out and look, go stay with my friends in Virgin for two weeks. And so I did that, and during the time I was here in Virgin, my first impression, being from the city—there’s another side to me which travels in wild places—these mountains looked like wallpaper ... until the husband of the family, Anton Gehring, invited me to come up to this house and sit at this table and meet a man named Jim Henning who was sitting on the side of the table I’m on. We came up and had lunch with Jim Henning and—you couldn’t call him, you couldn’t email him, he was just here on his own—and we walked in and he said, “you’re just in time for lunch.” A very gracious man.

Out of that came the opportunity for me to rent this place. And I was terrified of what he would ask me for rent. You drive around that corner, you see the valley, you see the house, and I said: “we’re going there?” I was just already in love. And so we came in and sat down for lunch, Jim said to me, very tentatively, “Would 500 dollars be too much?” And I did think of my home in Cambridge, which I could rent for several thousand dollars a month, and I said well that might work, and we struck a deal. During the time of the first year of rental I was living here with him, his wife who had divorced him wanted her money out of the mutual project they had and so he was forced to sell and I was in the right place at the right time.

We sold this on a handshake. I think you can tell that this place remarks values of a different, older kind. There are no straight angles in this house, he built it himself by hand and an earthquake specialist came in, was visiting, and said my god you did such a good job of preparing for any earthquakes, there are no right angles! (laughs) I don’t know if Jim told him it wasn’t on purpose.

The beautiful woman that brought him to Utah ended up returning to Cambridge after a year and a half. Perkins stayed. He had sold his home in Cambridge. Another woman, Claire, would enter his life.

ROBERT: I’m an Aries, and I’m impulsive. I was in my early 50s. A lot of my friends were saying how they were going to downsize or upsize or retire or whatever—stop—and it annoyed me. I didn’t want to stop; I didn’t even think I had begun. So moving out here was a great plus.

NICK: You didn’t want to stop—what were you doing?

ROBERT: Well I was working for PBS and Channel 4 in England, and I was making documentary films from the back of a canoe, all over the world. Traveling down rivers in different parts of the world to talk about what my observations were, what the culture was like, what the environment was like, what was going on. My last film started from here, and I went down the Virgin River to Lake Mead and on

to Mexico. It’s called “Blind Bird, Singing Rain.” I wanted to make a poetic film about water, and my producer in Boston wanted me to make a litigious, argumentative film about water rights. The Colorado is the most legally-fought over river in the world—maybe the Nile is competing. I did win out, and I made a very poetic film about water from here to Mexico. The film has a happy ending in the sense that—what the US government did in 1944 was cut off the water from Mexico and said we’ll just keep it on the US side. So a million square acres of wetland and the mouth of the river dried up, and many people had to change their livelihoods. They had been fishermen living on the water, and now they were living in a desert.

But the US government saw its way to creating a canal from Yuma, 80 miles into Mexico, and then it just stopped. However, when I made my journey, the salt water coming from Yuma mirrored the water that would have been tidal in the old days, so a new wetland is growing.

It’s as big as Manhattan now, if not bigger, and it’s a flyway for birds coming out of South America to North America. People go out to fish and picnic there, it’s a very hopeful thing.

NICK: Tell me about your education.

ROBERT: I’m very classically educated. I went to a private school in New England called Milton Academy. That was a boarding school, I hated it, but I got a good education, and I was accepted into Harvard University because I could pole vault better than anyone else in New England. I was the last member of my class invited in, and it was because I had topped a record in pole vault. When I got to Harvard they had people who had been pole vaulting in California all year round, they were a foot above me. In New England, you can only do it for the months of March, April, and May. So I found myself way outclassed in that.

I would say my biggest education came from having spent a year in a mental hospital in Boston called McLean Hospital, in my 19th year. It was an outcome of trying so hard and being let loose from a boarding school and a very controlled environment at home.

I wound up having a psychotic episode, which little did I know at the time, were the keys to an authentic life.

NICK: Really?

ROBERT: Absolutely. I couldn’t really relate well to other people.

I wasn’t in-bounds. Socially we interact with each other in a certain way, we say hello, we say goodbye, but if you start telling people what you think about them or your intuitions or how you feel deeply, it makes them uncomfortable. Especially if you don’t know them. So the outcome of that was a year in a hospital, which was horrible. They didn’t know anything about taking care of younger people at that time. I don’t think they do now. I was given a lot of drugs—stelazines, thorazines, and cogentin, one after the other to counter the effects.

Now this might be very hard to get to readers, I don’t know how you would do it. I am so in favor of understanding more about mental health, understanding what mental health issues are because people don’t address them, they hardly recognize them in themselves. I had an issue, when I was young, and I just think it comes from all the different pulls you have on you, from family, from institutions, from your own imagination, and often they don’t line up, they contradict each other and create a lot of suffering in you that shows up in different ways. Some people drink heavily, some people do drugs, some people do whatever they do to ameliorate that.

It took a long time, I will say that. No one understands a person who has afflictions of any kind unless they share the affliction. I would say it took me ten, fifteen years to understand that I had been given the keys to my life, as opposed to destroying my life. Part of it came because I was considered damaged goods by my family and by the world I grew up in—that you treat him kindly, he’s had some issues. So they ignored me, which allowed me to grow in my own root system.

NICK: Was that a good thing?

ROBERT: Huge thing, sure. I’m more myself than I am fulfilling someone else’s dream today. So out of that sadness and trauma came a real benefit, individually to me, and I like to think to others that I have met.

NICK: Were you at Harvard when this happened?

ROBERT: I was a freshman in college, and the bigger world from being a freshman in college was too much for me. I’ve a thin border, a thinner border between this world and other worlds than most people.

NICK: Other worlds?

ROBERT: Well, it’s not…… the other worlds are nature, empathy for others, kindness, understanding, desire to learn and grow, worlds that most people don’t have time for, or they say they don’t. I don’t separate myself, I live in the same world. My goals are perhaps different from other people’s. My goal is to, as deeply as I can, to understand this place where I live. I don’t live in a suburb or a city now, I live inside of this beautiful nature. I know the trails, I do the walking. That leads you into the history of the Indians who were here before us, and it leads you into speculations about what other possibilities there are for communicating.

My reputation is based on going on long solo expeditions in the Arctic, north of Yellow Knife—Yellow Knife is in the Northwest Territories of Canada. When you go into the Arctic in the Northwest Territories, you are in the wildest place that remains in this world.

There is nothing in Siberia, Africa, India, or anywhere like it, because those other places are populated with people. No matter how far off you go you’re going to find a village or people there. But in the Arctic the environment is pretty harsh and the people who inhabited it for seven, eight, ten thousand years—happily—the Inuit, were moved off the land and into communities in the 1950s. So the exterior is just wilderness and you come across the remarks of the former culture in a tent ring, rocks grown over with moss and you know they are a hundred years old. And you see things like that.

But what you’re doing is living in nature, and after my experience of being locked up so severely—there was no door handle on my side, and they came around every twenty minutes to flip on a light, to check you. It’s very disturbing to your sleep. When I got out—and I’m lucky because I did get out—when I did, I didn’t like people, I didn’t trust people. I found nature to be an incredible place—a loving indifference is what I have come to see it as, a very loving indifference to us. I felt at home there, I could orient myself there, I could prove to myself I could survive on my own in the wilderness.

One of the first experiences I had, on a solo journey in northern Labrador was feeling that somebody was watching me. I’m sitting in

that well, but his whole point of the lecture boiled down to a sentence he repeated again and again—“You must choice, you must choice, you must choice.” Which he really meant you must choose, you must discern A from B, Z from Y ... and his work was fabulous, really beautiful.

I was lucky in that regard, so I found myself aligning with people who, in their own individual ways, had found a form of expression about life, about being human, about helping others. I’m a practitioner of something called social practice. The tenet is that the edge of art is always changing, and what you want to do in that changing edge of art is create random, unusual and surprising pieces of beauty that catch people off guard and make them wake up, even a little bit or a lot.

NICK: What did you do when you got out of the mental hospital?

my camp, I’m all by myself, there really isn’t anyone around me for hundreds of miles, but you always know when someone is watching you, you know. You have that feeling. So I was trying to think— what was that? Who is watching? And I turned and I understood something—everything was watching me, from the rocks, the trees, the birds, the little bugs—everything oriented to me. So that created a connection and a relationship which I hadn’t felt before. Usually, you walk through (a place), and you’re the human. But there is the opportunity, if you are going slow enough, you’re sensitive enough and you care enough, to become attuned to it. So I found myself this place (Lazalu) and I feel like I’m on a continuous canoe trip, but I have a fixed roof. I’m a wanderer. There’s your cup (the cup he has given to me with water to drink as we talk), it says, “All who wander are not lost.” There’s a good title for you. We all wander, whether we acknowledge it or not.

ROBERT: I worked in a bakery. I was hired by a man who ran a bakery in Boston, and I was put in front of a seven-foot long revolving oven, they are very hot. You put bread in, rolls in, take bread out, take rolls out. In between, you were scraping down the pastry trays. And he had no time for my problems, he said nothing to me about my life. He just had me stand in front of that oven. It was great. I was so hot I felt like a desert animal, which I understand more now, wanting shade, and ... I dreamed. I dreamed about going to the Arctic, because there was a map that I looked at, and there were no roads up there. The road ended in the town called Yellow Knife, and there was all that space beyond it, and I said I will get there. It took me many years to earn the money to do it, and then oddly several trips later I was picked up by PBS. They said you have a story to tell.

After the first one (which was successful, it was called “Into the Great Solitude”) they said what do you want to do next? And that went on for twenty years.

You’re into something which is so counter to the culture we live in now. The connectivity of the culture doesn’t allow for one to be by one’s self. So when you go and you’re in silence, or you’re on your own without an overriding connection to technology, what do you see? What do you hear? What do you feel?

NICK: When you got out of the mental hospital did you go back to school?

ROBERT: Eventually. Of the tenets of Harvard if they accept you they’re going to get you graduated if you want to. There’s too much emphasis in our culture put on degrees, knowledge in the head.

NICK: So why did you go back?

ROBERT: Well, I was interested in poetry and art, and there is a huge connection to the past of your tradition inside a school like Harvard. I studied with fabulous poets. I studied with visual artists who were happy to talk to me about life. Chillida (Eduardo Chillida 1924-2002, Spanish sculptor and Harvard professor) had a lecture once that just knocked my socks off. He couldn’t speak English

My films are quirky and individual. As the woman who was always trying to increase her revenue said, “You go for the twenty percent of our audience, why don’t you try the eighty percent like Ken Burns?”

Well, five million people on the twenty percent was fine with me. And I got to tell my story the way I wanted on PBS. (Other documentary channels) have a formula, and they want you to stick with it; PBS said, great, just come back with a story. I did understand I was lucky to have an editorial freedom. The films have a life even though they are somewhat dated, through technology as well as, sort of, the moment, people still see them.

We take a break to make some photographs as daylight turns to twilight. Then Robert offers to make bowls of ramen soup. The conversation continues as he cooks.

NICK: The name Lazalu, tell me about that.

ROBERT: Made up word. My wife made it up. Her name was Claire, and she wrote under the name Clube. She was a poet that died too young.

NICK: May I ask how she passed?

ROBERT: She died with her daughter in a plane crash in Africa, in Kenya. Flying into the side of a mountain. On July 25, 2013. And I could have been with them, but I was here getting ready for our move to London. She was from London. She really wanted to go back, and I said ok.

So this is like giving back now, this is like sharing. I’ve been a very solitary man, solo canoeist, and the love of Claire helped me very much to open up.

Soup is served on the same table where Robert sat, on his first time here some twenty years ago. The conversation turns to his father.

ROBERT: He worked in a bank, he was a loan officer in a bank.

Ever try to get a loan? In the old days, you really had to prove it to them. So he was very formal, not interested in the arts. He didn’t really understand my aspirations. But he was a great backboard to work against, you know, how you practice your tennis? And I was really lucky because we had a hard time when I was a younger man, but when I made the first film and I became more successful in my own chosen world and I made some money, he could relate to that, and we became friends for the last ten years of his life. I’m very grateful for that. I think it’s the son who has to do that, the father won’t change, so the son has to accept how the father is. Here was a man who had been born in the teens, grew up in the Depression, fought in the Second World War, and was just thrilled with how America was developing in the 50s. Very much a participant and a believer in that. Institutions. They were very strong in building institutions.

In our generation, the idea was more of individual growth, and I’m a firm believer that the individual is the basic building block of society. Not big groups. A sentence in a writer I found named Adam Phillips—he wrote a little tiny book about Darwin’s worms. Darwin, at the end of his life, studied earthworms for seven years, and in this book about that period of Darwin’s life, Phillips has this sentence: “Living by the rules is another way of hoping that the future will be like the past.” And therein defines my dad, and defines me. ‘Cause you’re not gonna have the future be like the past, as much as you want it to be. So how can you adapt—are you adaptable or not?

Some people are and some aren’t.

NICK: Tell me about what will be in your art show at the St. George Art Museum.

ROBERT: They have a 75-foot long wall that is on the second floor, and I will roll out a piece of paper that is in the studio that will be 60feet long. It’s two feet high, and I’ve journaled on it ever since I got the opportunity to have the show. But interspersed will be pieces of art that are part of the narrative, the story. So it’s like a journal or a mural. And it will have objects that are framed, like old art was, and yet it’s kind of an installation. And I’m very proud of the fact that I’ve enrolled students from the ages of six to twelve in our community to come and draw with me. Because it’s all about keeping your dreams alive, it’s all about the innocence and beauty of a young imagination, and how you keep it going.

NICK: How do your current efforts in art differ from the past?

NICK: Were you raised in a religion?

ROBERT: (laughing) I’m what’s called in New England a “back-sliding Unitarian.” You can’t be any less religious than that. But Unitarianism in New England, it started there in the 19th century with Thoreau, Channing, and Emerson, people like that, and it was about the theory that you had a direct relationship to God, you didn’t need an interpreter, a policeman to direct traffic, you could have a direct connection. So church in New England wasn’t as strong a forming force as it has been in other places with other religions. It’s sort of in line with being an individual and believing in that as the building block. (pausing, laughs) I don’t want to cause controversy about myself in my neighborhood though.

ROBERT: There’s a different texture to it now. I think I touched on it in explaining my sense of what I’m doing here for others. I’ve created this place (Lazalu) as sort of my most recent piece of art that people inhabit, it’s part of that social art movement that I was mentioning. I’ve written a book that will be coming out in a year. It’s more meaningful because, I guess I see that at 69 I don’t have an endless amount of time. And through the loss of my wife, I saw very up-close and personal how fragile our lives are, really. It brought me to connect with others. I’m really curious about other people now, and I’m really curious about how you can give them joy, as opposed to argument. And I think I do that here.

It was confusing as a young person because you want direction, and they really aren’t giving you direction, they are hoping that you will find your own way. As opposed to other religions that give you a path and a very prescribed way of living. But it’s a presence, it’s an attitude. It embraces the same tenets of any other one: be kind, be good, do right, don’t do wrong. But you’re, as an individual, left to make your own decisions. So again, that’s a little confusing for a younger person, it was for me. Now I just so appreciate it – we’re so slotted into different areas of our lives today, the idea of an individual is kind of frowned on.

I like to think that I have huge reverence for other people’s beliefs, and for the ground and nature that we move through. Maybe that’s an orientation I have which is different. I’m not as inclined to a mancentered view of the universe, as I am that we are part of a fabulous thing, but we are not the be-all, end-all.

FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE

Wildfire is impressive and powerful. It inspires poetry and song verses about the fast, unpredictable nature of directionless destruction. When following the path of a wildfire, many people are prompted to ask questions like, “How can this still be happening?” In a world where humanity can control our environment with such skill and precision, why do wildfires still take off and rage through forests?

As long as Mother Nature allows sunshine, water, and soil to germinate seeds, there will always be something to burn. The trick is to determine which “fuels” are most likely to facilitate a fire spreading and try to limit that fuel. Dried grasses and deadfall are among the worst offenders in a wildfire.

When a wildfire happens, several parts of nature are affected. The air quality is poor. The ash robs the soil of nutrients needed to grow new plants. Losing the plants reduces the stability of the soil, which causes flooding and loss of topsoil.

Cory Norman, Fuels Specialist of the Beaver Ranger District-Fish Lake National Forest, works with the team at the National Forest and other agencies to mitigate the damage a wildfire can cause. Fighting fire with fire is a fast and effective way to stop a wildfire from ever starting, and controlling the area, a wildfire can burn if one does get started. Norman states, “we are doing so much, but there is so much more we could do. We want the general population to understand controlled burn helps the environment, the wildlife habitat, reduces fuels for uncontrolled burns, improves desirable native vegetation regrowth, and has a significant impact on Aspen regeneration. If we could educate the people in surrounding communities and have the local support for the planned burn programs, we could have a much more far-reaching program to stop a wildfire.

These preemptive fires are called a prescribed burn. The agencies look at all of the same factors involved in a wildfire and determine when and if an area can support a planned fire. Lots of different qualifications must be met to go forward with a controlled burn.

The air must be clear, and fire crews must receive a clearing index, there must be enough moisture in the ground, plants, and air. The proximity to assets, such as private property or utilities is considered.

Controlling a fire to clear the area near assets is a good idea, so a wildfire wouldn’t reach those assets in an uncontrolled situation. But there are calculations and considerations to how much risk is ok to take in a controlled burn. All the same recovery options are available for a controlled burn, such as reseeding to help the ecosystem recover quickly.

The risk of losing control of a prescribed burn must be well thought out, and a contingency plan must be in place for when a planned fire does get away. Less than 2% of the prescribed fires jump the proposed boundaries, and most of those are contained in the contingency plan. Literally, thousands and thousands of acres of controlled burns happen each year successfully. Occasionally motorists on a freeway or a main highway will notice a smoke plume above a remote mountain area. Signs are out notifying the passersby of a controlled burn, with instructions, “do not report.” Noman says for every one fire you would see from the freeway, hundreds of other planned fires are happening all over the southwest, preparing our public lands for the summer fire season.

Each time wildfire burns hot and fast and is controlled or contained by a previous year’s prescribed burn, the prescribed burn fire crews know they have done their job.

Aspen trees provide habitat for dozens of species of mammals and hundreds of species of birds. Aspen trees accumulate high levels of nutrients in the leaves and the woody tissues. These nutrients are stored and recycled in the lifecycle of the tree. Animals and insects use the nutrients in the trees, and when the tree dies, the deadfall decays quickly recycling the nutrients into the soils. The quick decay also limits the fuel source for wildfires moving through the area. Aspen leaves fall each year recycling nutrients, and the leaves decompose quickly so that other plant species are not choked out.

Conifer species decompose slowly, leaving hardwood fuel for future fires and the needles shed from conifers are slow to decay and prohibit other plant types from growing in the same area.

Winter is the best time for controlled burns, simply due to the air quality and moisture content in the soil and air. But controlled burns happen all year long, so long as conditions can be met.

The prescribed burn program is just one of the many proactive ways the Forest Service and other agencies work to improve and maintain the ecosystem and habitat of the Southwest Our natural resources are limited and valuable. Learning as much as we can to enhance and conserve will help generations to come, enjoy the same wonder and beauty we have today. Some projects even help get back the missing elements that were not protected long ago. Our wild places are where our hearts long for in troubled times. We seek solace in nature. Sometimes a violent event in well-controlled conditions can reinvent a place where peace and harmony can abound.

Representing the vibrant and lively art of Jenny Christiansen and Mike Ryan But fire prevention isn’t the only reason the fire crews hit the mountains in the winter. Part of the Watershed Initiatives in several states, are recovering or preserving groundwater by limiting the undesirable plant species. Conifer trees like white fir and subalpine fir consume a large amount of groundwater, have little commercial value, and limit the growth of grasses beneficial to wildlife.

Selecting areas overgrown with the conifer species and prescribing a large scale burn causes a disturbance in the ecosystem. A “disturbance” is necessary for Aspen trees to regenerate. These large burns are what people would think looked more like a wildfire.

They are actually a large scale burn, sometimes started with flamethrowers. They are well controlled but cover hundreds of acres in one burn.

Aspen regeneration is a major initiative in controlled burning.

For Aspen to grow, there has to be a clearing of the other more aggressive plants, clearing the way and freeing up groundwater to support the Aspen.

Larger Than Life THE REINVENTION OF ARTIST AND ENTREPRENEUR GREGG ARNOLD written by SHANNON LLEWELLYN

Giganticus Headicus rises into the bright Arizona sky like a runaway Easter Island moai who lost his way along Route 66. At 14 feet high, the half-buried green-hued sculpture made from metal, wood, chicken wire, styrofoam, and cement tiki-type sentry is the work of Gregg Arnold.

Giganticus Headicus watches over the Kozy Corner Trailer park, owned and operated by proprietor Gregg Arnold. On a cross-country trip from the tony shores of Manhattan to Los Angeles, Arnold was awestruck by the desert’s expansive night sky.

In 2003, Arnold traded in his ‘big-city’ Talent Coordinator title, sold his digs and trekked back to the stark beauty of the southwest to begin life as a semi-retired trailer park proprietor and waited for divine inspiration. And it came—in the form of something ‘larger than life’ and very green.

Giganticus Headicus quickly became a local landmark with tourists stopping to pose for photos daily. Soon after the rise of Giganticus, Arnold’s endless imagination led to the creation of other sculptures which began appearing all over town, much to the delight of the community.

Discovered in the mid-1850s while surveying a wagon road, local residents of Kingman treasure their rich history of mining and railroad while accepting the area’s growth and welcoming the evolving art scene. Arnold’s generosity and slightly-rogue art style has earned him the nickname, “Mr. Kingman,” for his dapper style and ostentatious showmanship at local events.

Giganticus Headicus was soon joined by the “Mountain Biking Around the World” sculpture by Arnold, a conglomeration of bicycles placed on Highway 93 that welcomes hikers and bicyclists to the entry of Kingman’s legendary trail system. Nothing Arnold touches lacks a quirky flair at his studio called Antares Art; after all, his dromedary camel mailbox is named “Rick” after his actual mail carrier.

“I just knew it felt like home. Like a home, I wanted to create, and so I did,” says Arnold of the life he has built as a “local.” He has evolved into a jack-of-all-trades artist, working in acrylic on canvas, metalwork and largescale air-brushing. His sculptures are large expressions of a colorfully whimsical life in the desert, each one a dramatic turn in a new conceptual direction.

As a ‘local’, Arnold has donated many of his works to benefit breast cancer awareness and community college scholarships all to the tune of thirty-six thousand dollars. He believes in helping to bring out, “the best in Kingman.” All the while, Mr. Arnold is also bringing out the best in himself.

Jim Federico sees what other people don’t. He sees magic in the ordinary.

Shape, color, purpose, and life in the simple things.

As a life-long creator, builder, and visionary, Jim has literally seen life rise from the ashes. After a stint in the military, he studied art at U.C. Santa Barbara where he was heavily influenced by the style and architecture of the California missions.

Working as a Hot Shot firefighter in the 1990s, Jim experienced first-hand how quickly life reinvents and renews itself. He began replicating rock art on large pieces of flagstone and glass and was commissioned by the Department of the Navy to work on “Cave of the Whales” on San Nicolas Island alongside archeologists to document and replicate the island’s aging petroglyphs.

While beachcombing one day, Federico stumbled across dozens of ‘oak galls’, which are the large, round, vaguely apple-like gall found on many species of oak. Also commonly referred to as ‘oak apples.” The unique striations and patterns on oak galls are caused by gall wasp larvae when they inject chemicals into them. He knew they would someday spur an artistic creation, he just didn’t know what.

Fast forward and Jim Federico has evolved into a true Renaissance man of the southwest. After retiring from the fire service due to a back injury, Jim and his wife, Mary, retreated to the Mojave desert to build on their 80 acres, an artist’s retreat, an inspirational haven, ‘Rancho Federico’, which has become his playground for all things creative. Mural painting, photography, metalwork, woodwork, and furniture up-cycling keep Federico inspired and busy year-round.

On the days he’s feeling more reflective and perhaps a bit introspective, he pulls out his boxes of oak galls and fashions whimsical ‘muneca’ dolls from repurposed cans, wires, fabric, and wood. Munecas are primitive Southwestern desert dolls whose design is influenced by rock art figures of the southwest. Jim has been creating small and ‘grande’ munecas since 2014 and each one is an original work-of-art from repurposed materials.

Federico is also the founder of the Yucca Area Arts Council which serves to foster artistic expression, civic participation and the economic growth of the diverse community by supporting, promoting, and advocating for arts and culture. Reflective of the Renaissance man that Federico has become, his commitment to supporting and inspiring others is equally as large as his imagination to create art.

Lightning is electricity that is untamed and unsafe, beautiful and dangerous.

Lightning seems to have a mind of its own.

So says the woman who can testify to it. It’s not every day that someone is struck by lightning, let alone twice!? Herberta Baker has lived to tell. Ancient sacred practices may consider her to be a “goddess” of sorts with such intervention with nature. Her relationship with lightning is ‘electrifying.’ Rather than run from her justifiable fear, Herberta has chased it down. The very force of light that thrice could have taken her life she now captures in her photos.

“I was struck by lightning when I was either five or six years old.

I was standing in water over the water meter when the strike hit— the water pipes and I got a significant charge. It just about blinded me it was so bright.” Herberta confesses she was terrified of storms for years after that. “Until I got stuck in a car during a storm and was too afraid to leave the car. It was then I realized I could sense when lightning was coming.” It is what happens to her physically that is compelling.

“I know exactly where and when these storms are going to spawn lightning. I get this feeling of overwhelming energy—like, ‘I want to run’ feeling. Then a taste appears in my mouth ... like an old, corroded, copper penny.

I don’t use a gizmo to trigger my camera’s shutter,” Herberta says with a bit of a chuckle. She’s had enough experience to know when lightning is about to appear.

“A few years ago, I got a flash burn from a cloud-to-cloud strike—instant, severe sunburn. The strike dipped and the heat was intense.”

Herberta has made the most out of this residual talent using her camera. “Lightning still terrifies me, but it thrills me at the same time,” she says. That ‘thrill’ has developed from her decision to not submit to the fear. Herberta’s close encounters while photographing a storm have been many. She describes one of those moments with a rather scientific approach.

“I rely on my senses when I’m shooting. I try not to get too close, like 10 to 15 miles away, actually. When I start to feel the energy and get that taste in my mouth, I pull off the road and set up for the shot. One time, I was less than two-tenths of a mile away from a strike. When lightning is that close, first you hear the sizzling sound of the strike leader heading towards the ground. Then you hear and feel the explosion as the return strike bursts from the ground to the cloud—it literally feels like a small earthquake. And the remainder of the sound is the further spitting of air molecules on its way to the cloud following the strike leader. If there is enough of a charge, you will see a dart leader followed by another return strike. You can’t see the leaders with a naked eye. That is where the camera comes in.

HISTORIC KINGMAN

I was downtown (Kingman) taking refuge from severe wind and hail, parked under an overhang of a 1950s gas station. Lightning was about 30 miles away and still made a beautiful back drop for the historic water towers from the town’s early Sante Fe Railroad days. Since it was a timed exposure shot, the blur seen there is a west-bound, Sante Fe, Burlington, Northern Train—which added to the fantasy feel of the photo.

HUALAPAI MOUNTAINS

A ‘hard to get’ daytime lightning strike over the Hualapai Mountains. The monsoons in this area tend to produce the most lightning above the mountain ranges that surround the city. I love sitting in the middle of vacant land where I have a good view of approaching storms such as this one. The lightning bolt closest to my location is only about 5 miles from me as the crow flies in this shot. It is a rush to catch a full strike like this in the daytime.

OLD ARTILLERY TRAINING FIELD It had been a long night.

I had chased storms from Kingman to Peach Springs, Arizona and back. The time was about 30 minutes before dawn would break over the horizon. I pulled off into a cow field across from the airport industrial park in Kingman.

The field had once been an artillery training field during World War II for the Army airbase. I was planning on a short nap. A lightning flash was bright enough to see thru closed eyes—end of any thoughts of a nap. The lightning was still some 30 to 40 miles away from me so I used a telephoto lens to capture the image. I snapped quite a few at 30-second exposures. This image was my favorite from that series.

There is no other way I would rather spend time than photographing a storm with a background of stars. It amazes me and makes me feel very small indeed.

TOWER AT KINGMAN AIRPORT The old Control Tower is from

World War II and has a lot of weather instrumentation on it. It fascinates me because it has stood there so long and it is still in one piece. Since the 40s it has been a silent sentinel overlooking Kingman.

Capturing the storm around it was a long time goal of mine.

I have done quite a few night shots but because this is a daytime shot, it is very dear to my heart. There are no long exposure times to help capture a daytime shot. I have to rely on my sense of what the lightning will do. I was elated when after 20 minutes of waiting, I was rewarded.

Let’s be clear, chasing lightning, or any storm for that matter, is not safe. Because of this, Herberta rarely takes anyone, friends or family, along for the ride. “I don’t usually take riders with me because they are pretty sure I am going to get us hit,” she says without offense.

“Most whom I have taken with me usually want to go home after the first couple of strikes.” Just the thought makes one’s hair stand up on end. Which, by the way, Herberta says is true for 99.9 percent of the population who are close to a pending lightning strike.

Although Mother Nature has raised more than a little havoc on her life, Herberta has shot back through her lens. “I’ve become a thrill seeker. But I certainly don’t recommend it.”

Note: Storms can change without warning. Safety first. Storm chasing is not recommended. Rain, flooding, underground mineral deposits, and nearby wells can attract lightning. Never assume you are safe outside during a storm.

As a young girl, Herberta Baker peered over her father’s shoulder while he photographed. That inspiration led Herberta down a similar path, photographing animals, landscapes, and historic relics. A resident of Kingman, Herberta has lived along historic Route 66 most of her life, producing the book, The Heart of Route 66, featuring the highway’s stretch between Seligman and Topock, Arizona.

But the passion behind her art is reflected in her images of lightning, which she was struck by as a child.

I had been on a quest for a few years to capture just the right lightning at the right time for a dramatic photograph. It took years to finally have a storm roll through in just the right position without a single vehicle parked in the foreground. I was positively giddy and useless the rest of this storm because I had gotten my prize shot—an unobstructed, non windjostled photo of the Mohave County Court House. I was so excited. Some shots are just one in a million. As a photographer, I feel like I am only as good as my next big shot ... the elusive dream shot.

Tom Bennett is a one-man band from Georgia. He was raised on a small family farm, Eagle Crest Ranch, west of Atlanta. Tom was first given a harmonica as a Christmas present when he was 9-years-old and learned to sing publicly in the choir of a Southern Baptist church. He left home at 16 and began traveling, eventually making his way west to Wyoming and on to Utah. He has hitchhiked, hopped trains, and ridden Greyhound buses around the country.

Tom Bennett is a fiercely talented musician and wondrously curious man. He is also the founder of the Colorado City Music Festival, an unlikely vision that Tom brought to fruition. How it came to be is where we pick up Tom’s own story and his connection to an improbable venue.

I never thought my random visit to Short Creek would turn into something that made national news. I’ve always been fascinated by religion. I am intrigued by the way faith can motivate action and change people’s lives—for better or for worse. I was raised on a family farm in west Georgia, nearly 2,500 miles away from southern Utah.

Growing up all my neighbors were Southern Baptist. I’d never heard of Latte-day Saints much less Fundamentalist Mormon polygamists but after having arrived in Utah in 2001, I educated myself on the history of the state—this history would be incomplete without an understanding of the Fundamentalists.

In 1886, L.D.S. church leader John Taylor was in hiding in Bountiful, Utah. The federal government was looking to enforce the Edmonds-Tucker Act and end the Mormon practice of plural marriage. It’s a fact, long forgotten by many, that the Republican party was founded upon the effort of ending the “twin relics of barbarism: slavery and polygamy.” They intended on making good on it by arresting the Mormon leadership. John Taylor, well understanding the threat, would not back down. He left a revelation, that the principle of polygamy must continue. The Prophet’s son, John W. Taylor found documents that attest to this fact while searching through his father’s possessions shortly after his death.

A small group of men who were with the Prophet in his last days claim to have been set apart as a “council of friends” to ensure that celestial plural marriage continued. This began the fundamentalist movement and as these men drew like-minded families to them, the move was made to the Utah/Arizona border, to Short Creek (aka ‘The Crick’). It has been in this environment that these families have flourished until recent years.

This was the world I found myself in on that spring day. To be honest, I went there because I was told I couldn’t. I had heard rumors of the “god squad” who, it was said, would chase outsiders out of town.

I had to know the truth. The day I drove through ‘The Crick’ for my first time, the streets were silent. It was a spring Wednesday. Huge

mansion homes lined the dusty streets; it felt like a ghost town. I was immensely curious, so I pulled over and took a walk. It wasn’t long before a beat up old minivan pulled alongside me. The driver was a tall, lanky man with a shock of blonde hair. The back of the van was filled with small children.

He had a huge smile on his face. Instead of being chased off, I found that this man was about as friendly as could be. Through his smile, he asked, ”Are you lost?”

I answered that I was not, and proceeded to tell him all I knew about the town and its history.

He laughed and said, “You might know more than I do, would you like a tour?”

I followed him through the town and up the hillside to Maxwell Park.

The park was featured on the cover of National Geographic when the magazine ran a feature on polygamists. Seeing it in real life was astounding. Beneath El Capitan mountain, children in prairie dresses played kickball in a green field. I sat down to take it all in. Then, I took out my guitar and quietly began to play. It wasn’t long till many of the children came to inquire of me. I was invited to play kickball, and we got about half an inning in before the kids were called to go. I knew I wanted to play music in that field. #ExperienceTheSouthwest

Over the next two years, I made many return visits to ‘The Crick’.

I put on a few concerts at the Berry Knoll Bakery, being one of the first outsiders to play music there. And I made some wonderful friends.

‘The Crick’ was an amazing community of people who not only have an incredible sense of humor but are wildly skilled in about any trade you can think of.

My appreciation for the area and love of music led to the creation of the Colorado City Music Festival in 2017.

The venue was ‘that place’ ... Maxwell Park. The festival was a success, attracting about 1000 people as well as national media attention. That’s when I knew it would require more than musical talent to keep the festival going. Many “creatives” find necessary business tasks to be rather challenging. Enter Dawn Bistline Cooke.

Dawn, a “Cricker” through-and-through, was born and raised in the FLDS community, but made a life for herself in both Idaho and Utah.

Dawn is a driven and social woman who has put her hand to many tasks. And, she loves music. While working with local municipalities, I met Dawn who offered to assist with the festival. It was she who was able to build bridges in the community and reach out to family and friends, gathering the resources we needed to make the festival happen.

Let’s face it, creating a musical festival in a rather remote location with a culture that has clung to its history despite the scrutiny of an enormous national microscope has not been easy—it has been rewarding. The effort has been a collaborative one. Lex De Azevedo and Alex Pelton with the Zion Canyon Music Festival offered up guidance. Musicians from across the country and locals as well have come to play the stage in Maxwell Park simply to defy the odds of such an unlikely venue. If the intrigue of the festival alone isn’t enough to draw the crowd, the beauty of the area is.

IN YEAR TWO OF ITS EXISTENCE, THE CENTER FOR THE ARTS AT KAYENTA HAS A LINEUP OF EVENTS THAT WILL DRAW EVEN BIGGER CROWDS People who love high-quality live performances won’t have to wait till March for Spring Season. It all starts January 2019 at the Center for the Arts at Kayenta in Ivins, Utah.

At a time when entertainment is literally at our fingertips, it’s easy to get distracted and simply forget that a live performance is often so much more meaningful than watching something on a screen. In fact, filmmakers know that the closer they can get to simulating a live experience—with larger screens, stereo surround-sound and even vibrations—the better the viewer experience. But, technology can only go so far in creating the total experience of a live performance.

Take, for example, how you feel when you’re sitting in the audience and you take on all that positive energy as everyone rises in unison to express that shared sense of awe when the performer hits it spot on. Or, when you’re gulping back tears watching a heartfelt scene in a play. Or, when you feel this sudden connection to the dancer who just sacheted his way into your soul. And no screen can replicate the feeling that you are actually involved in the creation of the whole experience. Because at a live performance, you actually are a participant.

The folks who set out to create the black box theatre in Kayenta years ago (2011 to be exact) knew the importance of live performances.

In fact, they were intent on building a center that would allow people of all stripes, ages, shapes, and colors, to interact with live as well as visual art—whether that was on stage or in the audience.

So far, so good.

In its “inaugural” year, CFAK housed more than 50 live performances.

Thousands of people took their seats in the intimate, state-ofthe-art Lorraine Boccardo Black box theatre. They left that live theater experience a little more enriched, enlightened ... and of course, entertained.

Starting January, CFAK has events to appeal to a variety of interests.

The Spring Season kicks off with “Newfangled Four,” an international award-winning barbershop quartet out of California. Music lovers of all ages will be smitten by the gorgeous blended harmonies of the group’s sound, and the troupe’s hilarious banter between songs.

Next is Jake’s Women, one of playwright Neil Simon’s cleverest comedies about a writer losing his love ... and his marbles. Then, February 15-17—just in time for a romantic date with yourself or a partner— Broadway star John Smitherman returns with four of his “Friends” after giving a highly successful performance last fall of My Broadway, a musical revue of favorites from Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, and more.

Ten exciting events are slated for January and February. The Center strives to bring the most talented performers to our region, and an array of unforgettable theatrical adventures. All are welcome and encouraged to come.

ST GEORGE DAY SPA GRAND EXPANSION Celebrating over ten years of service to the community, St. George Day Spa unveiled the completion of their “Grand Expansion.” With almost a year of planning and months in the making, the open house showcased the new state-of-the-art facility designed by owner/ proprietor, Cyndi Schumacher. Etched Magazine was on hand to capture the moment along with longtime patrons, community members, family, friends, and the St. George Area Chamber of Commerce who conducted the official ribboncutting ceremony. The expansion of St. George Day Spa, whose focus remains on classic spa services, is a reflection of the area’s growth and continued support for small business.

GRAND TO GRAND PREMIER Runners from around the world embarked on the relentless journey of the 2018 Grand to Grand Ultra. Participants covered 170 miles as the grueling route led them from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon to the Grand Staircase.

The three-man Southern Utah University team consisted of the college’s President Wyatt, William Heyborne, Associate Professor of Biology, and Johnny Oh, director of Global Engagement, finishing first in their division! The group utilized their race as a fundraising endeavor for the future Sorenson Legacy Foundation Child and Family Development Center.

TURKEY TROT AND POLAR EXPRESS With year-round events for locals and visitors alike, southern Utah’s city of Kanab welcomed the holiday season in with grand style. The K-Town Turkey Trot 5K fun run kicked off Thanksgiving morning.

Runners headed out from Jackson Flat Reservoir and crossed the finish line at the newly completed Sherry Belle Trail. The new trail encompasses three miles of the beautiful Jackson Flat Reservoir area. During the Christmas season, the community offered a classic Polar Express adventure. Children were able to deliver their letters to Santa and take a ride on the “Polar Express.” The family fun event also included caroling, decorating cookies, movies, and pictures with Santa. Center Street was closed in honor of the magical Christmas Light Parade followed by a lantern launch of holiday well wishes. The Polar Express experience served not only as a community event but also as a fundraising endeavor for Kanab High School student body.
