From Me To You... I truly believe that we all have superpowers. Some people can climb the tallest buildings with a single bound, others can see through walls, and yet others can shoot webs out of their wrists. Oh, right, that would be Marvel superheroes. All kidding aside, I do think we have amazing strengths that we use in our daily lives. You hear about the person who lifts a car off of an injured person in an accident, the surge of adrenaline helps there I am sure. Or maybe it is as simple as a mother’s intuition that someone is getting in trouble, usually preceded by a deafening silence from the room full of toddlers. My superpower is spatial awareness. Not impressed? You should be. I can load a dishwasher to capacity and everything gets clean. I can parallel park any vehicle in any space more than 6 inches larger than the car in question without a scratch. I can drive on roads in England and not get my car totaled by passing hellions. I can go grocery shopping and be able to fit every last bag of frozen peas and tub of Ben & Jerry’s into my freezer.

Estrella Publishing - The Park magazine

The best of all though is my packing ability. I was taught by my Mum how to pack things in things - you know socks inside boots, stuff like that. But it goes beyond the simplicity of ‘Traveling Tetris’. If you give me a pile of clothes and sundries I can, 9 times out of 10, make it all fit in your suitcase with room for one more cute top or pair of flipflops. The last time I came home from England I packed so efficiently I had one extra suitcase free - I of course used that space to bring home extra chocolate. I wish I had more superpowers, like the ability to stay on task for more than two minutes, or keep my house clean and tidy without the panic of impending visitors. Also the ability to get things done in a timely manner. That is one superpower I would trade spatial awareness for in a heartbeat. Actually, I think I will keep the powers I have, unless someone wants to trade for invisibility?

Purrfect Pets

You’re probably familiar with therapy dogs but did you know that time spent with therapy cats provides scientifically proven emotional benefits as well? Therapy animals have been shown to decrease levels of general anxiety and alleviate symptoms of depression. Cats in general make ideal therapy animals and are a great alternative to therapy dogs. Plus, their smaller size and affinity for sitting on laps and cuddling can make them a good option for quieter environments and people who have limited mobility. While everyone has experienced the emotional toll of recent world events, seniors have been especially impacted due to extended periods of isolation and increased loneliness. Therapy animal visits play a crucial role in helping during times of hardship. Therapy animals, including therapy cats, can especially comfort those with dementia, promoting socialization and engagement, and decreasing depression, anxiety and irritability in seniors. Time spent with cats can be a stimulating and highly engaging form of therapy - boosting mental health and enhancing one’s sense of well-being. And while nothing replaces the emotional connection of petting a cat, research by Pet Partners also reveals that even engaging with virtual pet content can still be impactful.

universities,” said Howell about her cats Roger and Sal. “Cats have the unique ability to draw people out like no other interactions can. During a visit to a senior living facility, we were with a group of seniors who were taking turns petting Roger when a woman came up and joined the group and said she liked cats. A nurse later told me that the woman had never joined the group before or spoken much to anyone there!” Howell loves to see how her cats affect others. “It is such a joy to be able to share your animal with other people and watch their faces light up,” she said. And it’s not just the people who benefit - the cats enjoy their experience as well. “Roger purrs nonstop the whole time he is there,” said Howell. “I really think he’s into the healing properties of purrs!” To learn more about the healing power of cats, how you can get involved, and how Cat Chow is helping, visit CatChow.com/therapy.

To provide more seniors with access to the benefits of therapy cats, Purina Cat Chow partnered with Pet Partners and the Institute on Aging, a non-profit dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for aging adults, to offer free virtual therapy cat visits for seniors over age 60. Pet Partners therapy cat handler Tracy Howell has seen firsthand the impact therapy cat visits can have. “During my time as a therapy cat handler volunteer, we have had the opportunity to visit locations from nursing facilities and assisted living centers, to Children’s Hospitals and 4

Money Matters Many people have financial goals - maybe it’s to get an education, buy a car, purchase a home, or start a business - that require access to credit. However, if you are new to credit, trying to build a credit history can be daunting. It helps to know the basics about the FICO Score. Your FICO Score includes measures on how long you’ve had credit, how much credit you have, how much of your available credit is being used and if you’ve paid on time. A FICO Score helps lenders determine how likely you are to repay a loan. This, in turn, affects how much you can borrow and how much it will cost (e.g., the interest rate). You can take steps to actively build their credit history. To help, here are five things to know if you are new to credit: #1 Understand the basics about your FICO Score To get a FICO Score, you need at least one credit account opened for six months or more and at least one account that is reporting to the credit bureaus in the last 6 months (those criteria can be met with the same account).

#2 Take advantage of new ways to establish credit More lenders are using newer scores that tap into alternative data sources, such as telecom, utilities and checking account data.

#3 Actively monitor your FICO Score Research has shown that consumers who frequently check their credit score are more likely to have a higher overall score. You can go to myFICO. com to monitor your score. #4 Demonstrate responsible borrowing and stay the course Your score today doesn’t have to be your score tomorrow. Plan and stay the course with positive borrower behaviors that will be reflected in your credit file. Stay up to date on your bills, keep balances low and only apply for the credit you need. #5 Empower yourself with knowledge Understanding your credit score and how to manage it doesn’t have to be a mystery. There are many educational resources available, including free workshops supported by FICO where you can learn about your credit score directly from the experts. Visit www.scoreabetterfuture.com to learn more.

Eye Eye When improving your health and wellness, it’s essential to take care of your eyes too. For African Americans, this is especially important because of increased risk factors for eye disease and vision loss. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, glaucoma is three times more likely to occur in African Americans. The risks of glaucoma are magnified further when you consider that the disease strikes, on average, 10 years earlier and progresses faster among African Americans, according to the Glaucoma Research Foundation. The good news is that with early detection and treatments the majority of patients with glaucoma maintain their vision. By becoming aware of your risk factors and taking preventive steps, you can help protect your eyes. 1) Finding answers in your genes While the risk factors for eye disease continue to be studied, the ophthalmology community believes genetics can play a role. “African Americans have a range of genetic predispositions that make them more susceptible to eye diseases such as glaucoma,” says Dr. Eydie Miller-Ellis, professor of clinical ophthalmology and director of the Glaucoma Service at the Scheie Eye Institute, University of Pennsylvania.

3) Schedule an eye exam Understanding that you are at greater risk for eye disease and vision loss is the starting point toward protecting your eyesight. Begin a routine of yearly dilated eye exams with an ophthalmologist so that vision problems can be detected early. 4) No vision plan? No worries Don’t let the lack of a vision plan hold you back from scheduling a screening for glaucoma. Medical eye exams and treatments for eye diseases, including glaucoma, are typically covered by regular health insurance. 5) Know your family history Some eye diseases, such as glaucoma, can be hereditary. “To prioritize healthy vision, it’s important to have a complete understanding of your family’s history of eye disease,” says Dr. Mildred M.G. Olivier, founding regional dean at the School of Medicine, Ponce Health Sciences University, St. Louis campus. 6) Empower yourself Olivier also encourages people to be their own advocates in breaking down the health inequity barriers for minorities that may stand in the way of better eye health. For more information visit www.glaucoma.org

2) Don’t dismiss a lack of symptoms Since glaucoma often develops without symptoms and you can lose vision without noticing it, Miller-Ellis stresses that early action is vital for African Americans to help prevent glaucoma and other eye diseases.

Summertime

Summer vacations are an excellent opportunity to unwind, bond with your family and make memories. However, planning a family getaway can be challenging, especially if your family members are of different ages and have different interests. If you haven’t planned one before, or it’s been awhile since your last family vacation, it can be a bit daunting to know where to start. Here are three tips for planning a summer getaway everyone in the family is sure to enjoy. 1. Brainstorm together Start planning your trip by brainstorming ideas together as a family. Consider where you’ve already visited and what kind of experiences you’ve had. Are there any places you want to revisit? What did you like or dislike about previous vacations? What locations do you want to visit and which experiences do you want to enjoy? Brainstorming your family vacation will likely involve several conversations before picking a destination. Have each family member list their top destinations and activities.

2. Pick your destination Once you have a clear picture of what your family wants out of your vacation, it’s time to pick a spot! While you may not be able to accommodate everyone’s desires, you can choose a destination that provides a variety of activities. Resorts are an excellent choice for a family vacation because they offer several attractions and experiences. With so many choices, vacation planning is simplified. 3. Getting there Now that you’ve picked your destination, it’s time to consider transport. How far are you willing to travel? Do you have young children or grandparents who will need travel accommodations? Do you prefer to drive, take a train or fly? These are all important questions to ask yourself and your family when planning your summer vacation. One of the most classic summer family vacation experiences is road trips, and there are plenty of benefits too. You can make stops along the way to your destination to stretch your legs and see the sites on your route. It’s time to start planning your summer family getaway! Use these three tips to plan a summer vacation your family won’t soon forget.

Sunday Blues Do you sometimes find yourself feeling less than optimistic as your weekend draws to a close each Sunday? If so, you’re far from alone. Stats recently published on Inc.com indicate 81% of workers have experienced the “Sunday scaries” in anticipation of the work week ahead. Still, it’s important to fend off those encroaching feelings and preserve the quality of your Sunday afternoon, since weekends are generally intended to help people relax, rejuvenate and enjoy time with family and friends. In that spirit, here are five suggestions to help energize your Sunday. • Be intentional about weekend plans. Plan ahead so you spend your weekend time doing what you really need or want to do instead of simply waiting for things to unfold. Fulfilling your plan can help you feel more in control, ward off procrastination, provide a sense of accomplishment and eliminate any sense of having “wasted” your weekend. • Incorporate activities you love. Spend part of your weekend doing something you enjoy. It’s all

too easy to get caught up in activities you feel you have to do that you never have time for the things that give you pleasure. • Maintain a cheerful environment. Make sure your physical living area is neat, clean, well-lit and boosts your energy. A little scent therapy in the form of a candle, room spray or plug-in oil can be the mood boost. • Consider disconnecting from your phone and computer. Keep thoughts of work from encroaching on your weekend psyche by unplugging from your screens until Monday morning. Protect your mental and emotional space from the stress of the working world and focus on self-care instead. • Prioritize sleep and eating habits. Disregarding your normal patterns on the weekends - perhaps by skipping meals, overindulging in junk food, failing to stay hydrated or staying up until the wee hours - can easily backfire by Sunday night. Following healthy habits can enhance your general sense of well-being and set you up well for the start of your work week. Sundays are a key part of every weekend, so don’t waste them thinking about Mondays. Strive for a healthy work-life balance by claiming each Sunday for yourself, your own pursuits and your own self-care.

Leftover Pro

Leftovers are an easy solution to the common question, “What’s for dinner?” and are a simple step toward more sustainable living. A recent survey found that 72% of Americans identify as pro-leftovers - but how can we cook and store these foods for maximum mealtime “yum” and less food waste? Whether you’re pro-leftovers all the way or need some convincing, follow the tips below for a more sustainable approach to mealtime joy. 1. Keep an organized fridge. An organized fridge is key to making the most of your leftovers and limiting food waste. Give your fridge interior a refresh so you can best find food items and develop a system that works for your family. Label your leftovers with the date they were made, and store them in airtight, glass containers. It’s easy to forget what’s in your fridge until it’s too late - glass storage containers are not only reusable and sustainable, but also allow you to see what’s inside. 2. Cook meals that you already know will make great leftovers. Many Americans choose their meals based on whether or not they will make good leftovers for future meals. Rather than making that egg frittata for your at-home brunch, consider sweet potato hash browns or cheesy pasta bake so you can enjoy them for days to come.

3. Treat “extras” as a foundation for new meals. We all have that one recipe that calls for only a small amount of one ingredient, but you don’t need it for anything else. Think about what extra ingredients can become to save time and money. For example, repurpose vegetable scraps to make a soup or stock. Toss extra carrots, onions and the like in a gallon zip-top bag in the freezer. If you prepare twice the vegetables you’ll need for a meal, you’ll have a starting point for a soup or pasta salad later in the week, such as Leftovers Veggie Soup. 4. Maximize freshness with the right products and appliances. Choose a refrigerator that features freshness technology specifically designed to extend the shelf life of your food, so you can have peace of mind knowing your leftovers will be good to eat in days after you first eat the meal. You can also freeze leftovers if you want to extend their life for a longer period of time. An easy storage hack for leftover soup or sauce is to freeze them in muffin tins or ice cube trays for small portions to easily use for other meals. 5. Reheat your leftovers like a pro. There are a number of ways to best reheat leftovers, and 41% of survey respondents said reheating ability is a key factor that would incentivize them to eat more leftovers. Your cooktop is a key method to making your leftovers feel like a brand-new meal. While microwaves are handy when you’re on a time crunch, they might give your leftovers an undesirable consistency, whereas cooking on the stovetop on low heat maintains its original taste and texture. You can also reheat leftovers on an induction cooktop for fast and precise reheating to ensure your leftovers don’t have any cold spots, and for easy cleanup. Steam cooking is another great way to reheat leftovers, as it retains nutrients, moisture and the original integrity of your food. Try reheating foods like fish and veggies in a steam oven - your leftovers will always come out fresh and flavorful!

Mind & Body

Everyone has physical scars. Maybe it’s a scrape from a childhood stumble or a burn from cooking a special meal. Some scars come from body changes or physical conditions, such as acne scars, while others might be from serious events, like a surgery or an accident. It’s not uncommon for people to be insecure about their scars and try to hide them. When you think of all the scars you have on your body - big and small - try to realize they represent your unique journey in life. By building confidence surrounding your perceived physical imperfections, you will feel better about yourself and may even be able to help others who struggle with their scars. Consider these following steps to transform your mindset and your life. Accept your scar as part of who you are Mental health healing and physical healing often go hand in hand. Specially formulated scar treatments may help diminish the appearance of your scars. However, your physical scars will never be completely erased, so it’s important to accept them as part of what makes you unique. Understanding that the journey from scar, through treatment, to healing will leave you feeling more confident in the end. Stop hiding your scars Having selfconfidence to bear your physical scars can be difficult. Many people Estrella Publishing - The Park magazine

use makeup, clothing and accessories to hide their scars. Part of healing and embracing who you are is showing your scars outside of your home. It may take time and you may need to take it step by step as your confidence builds, but you’ll feel better when you can leave your home and shine brightly without having to hide part of who you are. Begin to open up about your scars It’s natural for people to inquire about the presence of a visible scar. The next time someone asks, “How did you get that?” decide how you want to answer. Remember, your scar is a map to where your body has been and often, the stories behind them are interesting - some funny, uplifting or even tragic, but they all make you who you are today. Share your story with others Storytelling can aid in emotional healing and is a powerful tool for mental health and personal growth. Some people decide to journal through their feelings to help get their thoughts down on paper. That alone can help you to heal. Then, if you are comfortable with your story, share it with others who may be struggling with their own experience. From acne scar sufferers to those with scars from surgeries, scar bearers can tell their stories and shed light on the baggage that these perceived physical imperfections can bring both mentally and physically, embrace the beauty of their scars and get to know who they are beyond their scar. Home Sweet Home Much of the country is still in the middle of a red-hot real estate market. Home values are rising due to high demand and first-time homebuyers should be aware of how the value of their home impacts the way their premiums are calculated. Location and structure type are two examples of considerations that can affect home insurance premiums, but so do the features of the home, policy limits, and, in some states, even a homeowner’s personal finances. Policyholders should be aware of the variables that are factored into their insurance coverage.

Location Location is perhaps the largest component when it comes to the costs of your insurance premium since it deals with exposure and hazard to the home’s physical structure. The type of home you have, where you live and the state or city in which you reside can drastically affect how much you will pay. In fact, location is such a primary factor that coverage in certain areas may require special policies. For example, many homeowners moved from the city to the country during the pandemic and found that they now live in wildfire- or flood-prone areas and that additional coverage is needed due to environmental risk factors not covered under available homeowners insurance policies in the area. Homeowners living in or near large urban areas may find that their premiums cost more due to the higher cost for construction or repairs. Replacement cost The more your home costs to replace, the more you will need in coverage to insure it. “Replacement cost is a measure of the amount it would cost to replace or rebuild your home after a loss with a similar home of like kind and quality,” said Bonnie Lee, Mercury Insurance vice president of property claims. “This amount takes into account factors such as the square footage of your home, the local construction 14

Estrella Publishing - The Park magazine

costs per square foot, and construction details unique to your home. Replacement costs and market value are often used interchangeably, but they are two completely different concepts. Market value accounts for how the neighborhood and its conveniences impact a property’s attractiveness to buyers, while replacement costs only refers to the expense of rebuilding a home after a loss,” Deductible The insurance deductible is one of the most important parts of a homeowners policy and plays a significant role when determining

insurance premiums. The deductible is the amount of money a policyholder must pay before the policy pays out for repairs or a loss. For example, if covered damage to your home costs $20,000 and your deductible is $5,000, you would be responsible for the first $5,000 in damages and your insurance company would pay the remaining $15,000. Homeowners that pay a higher deductible may decrease the cost of their premiums, but may have to pay more out of pocket when filing a claim. Home insurance premiums are calculated based on a number of factors that homeowners should take into consideration when researching the best coverage for their needs at a reasonable cost.
