Plenty to Savour at weekend festival By Sam Macdonald smacdonald@estevanmercury.ca
Affinity Place was packed to the brims with people excited to get out and savour all that was available this past weekend. Savour the Southeast featured a wide variety of food and drink offerings from a multitude of busi-
nesses, and organizations from across southeast Saskatchewan. The event brought out a tremendous crowd of 2,000 people, significantly more than what was expected. The main floor of Affinity Place was crowded almost to the point of congestion and even half an hour into the event, the lineup
was to the door. Tickets which were used to purchase samples of food and drinks, exchanged hands at a rapid rate, and the delicious aroma of all the offerings wafted through the air, all to the rocking, folky sounds of All Mighty Voice, Nickeltree and Alex Runions, all Saskatchewan artists who performed throughout the night.
“I think it’s a good fundraiser event. I’m very impressed. They handled it well, although it is a bit crowded,” said Dawn Siebel, one of the many guests at the event. “We were talking to the organizers and they were saying the layout was the first thing they’d change next time, to space it out. I don’t drink, but I liked all the food I
tried. In particular, the sasaktoon berry pie, perogies and tropical chicken were delicious.” Josh LeBlanc, co-chair of the committee that organized Savour the Southeast, said the success of the event exceeded his expectations by a wide margin.

Prism and Harlequin will rock Estevan SUMMER GAMES TEAM BOOKS CANADIAN ROCK LEGENDS Canadian rock music legends Prism and Harlequin will take their turn on stage at Affinity Place in the Energy City on June 18 as the Saskatchewan Summer Games host committee makes another major fundraising push before the Games begin in late July. This will be a cabaret style concert. “We are excited to be hosting not one, but two Canadian music legends. Concert goers will be treated to the rock music of Prism along with special guest, Harlequin. It will be
our last major fundraiser prior to the Games, and we are looking forward to having a really good time with some spectacular musicians,” said Randy Senchuk, a member of the organizing and fundraising group. The event will feature a full evening of music. A disc jockey will keep the music from the stage flowing between sets. “We wanted a full night of music, for a reasonable cost,” said Senchuk. The cabaret-style concert will feature reserved
tables of eight people along the front of the stage and then individual standing room tickets for the rest of the floor. Some select seats in the arena seating area will also be made available. Tickets will be priced between $50 and $70 (advance or at the door) with the reserved eight-person tables selling for $600 apiece. Tickets are on sale at Henders Drugs in downtown Estevan or by phoning the Games headquarters at 306-687-2016. “ F i n a n c i a l l y, t h e Games are looking to be in
a solid position. The more money we raise, the more we can invest in capital projects for our community. It is our dream to leave something substantial in place for all of the sports. The concert, while being a fundraising event, will also be a celebration of all the hard work our volunteers have done, and the tremendous support the community has given the Games,” said Brian Senchuk, co-chairman of the Games committee. Prism first took to the stage in Vancouver
in 1977 and the original group remained active through to 1984 and then took a breather until they reformed again in 1987. The band has captured the Canadian music industry’s Juno Award as Group of the Year in 1981 and reached the top 40 charts in the United States with their 1981 hit Don’t Let Him Know. Their 2011 offering of Spaceship Superstar was chosen as the wake up song for the Discovery Space Shuttle crew members. Harlequin is rooted in Winnipeg, starting in 1975
and by 1979 the band had released their first album, Victim of a Song, which went gold and received heavy radio play, especially in Western Canada. The albums Love Crimes in 1980 and Thinking of You, One False Move, Innocence, then Superstitious Feeling and I Did it for Love, led to four more hits. The band maintained a heavy touring schedule until 2007 when they took a short hiatus before resuming tours in 2009 while releasing their first live album.
