Credit union presents cheques to organizations

Affinity Credit Union’s District Council 12, which covers the southeast region, handed over more than $58,000 in cheques on Tuesday afternoon to various organizations in the Estevan area.

Pauline Ziehl Grimsrud, who is a member of the District Council 12 board, said they decided to do all the presentations at once so they could show everyone the different groups that will receive funding.

“We wanted the media to come and we want other groups in the community to know that we exist, and to take the opportunity to vie for this money,” said Ziehl Grimsrud.

Each organization applied online, and then the seven members of the district council convened in May to evaluate the applications.

The organizations that received funding cover various aspects of life in the community, including sport and recreation, arts and culture, education and healthcare.

“Within that mandate, we look at these organizations, and what is their role in the community, what are they supplying to the community, and are these viable organizations,” said Ziehl Grimsrud.

“We also want to support organizations that show fiscal responsibility,

Duane Chipley, who is also a district council board member, said they also look at how much the organizations are utilized.

The money is for capital projects only, he said.

($5,000); Habitat for Humanity’s Estevan chapter ($7,000); Estevan senior football ($10,000); Estevan Youth and Mini Soccer ($1,500); the Hillcrest Early Learning Centre ($2,500); Estevan Child Care Centre ($5,000); the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation ($5,000); the Estevan Curling Club ($3,000); the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum ($14,000); and Fresh Air Fitness ($5,411).

per cent of Affinity’s budgeted pre-tax income.

“A few years ago, the decision was made that rather than paying patronage as a credit union, we would create a community development fund, and put the money into reasonable projects within communities,” said Chipley.

Each district council uses their discretion to support projects they see fit in the communities.

“This is completely up to the council for who and how they distribute this

money,” said Ziehl Grimsrud.

District Council 12 will allocate a total of $117,822 to various organizations this round of funding. In addition to the money for organizations in Estevan, it will present $35,346.60 to those in its eastern area, which includes Carnduff, Carlyle, Redvers, Oxbow, Manor and Storthoaks; and $23,564.40 to organizations in the western part of the region, including Bienfait, Lampman, Gladmar and Minton.

“Every area had applications, and we go over all of those applications as a group, and we decide who we’re going to support,” said Ziehl Grimsrud.

A total of 47 applications were received this year. The council had to turn some organizations away, and others didn’t receive as much money as they wanted, but Ziehl Grimsrud said there is only so much money to distribute. She hopes the district council has helped all of the successful organizations.

trees and brush from the site, and some hanging trees and branches need to be taken away. Grass needs to be cut in the large dog park as well.

“It’s going to take a couple of solid work bees to do that,” said Gervais.

She has been trying to plan work bees for the park, but it’s difficult at this time of year due to the

number of people who are out of town for summer vacation. It can also be a challenge due to the heat during the day.

She expects the dog park will need more volunteers if the large park is to be open this year.

Once the large park is finished, it will be for larger dogs, while the existing park will be for smaller dogs. Gervais expects it will create an enjoyable experience for all of the dogs in the park.

“We wanted the large area for dogs to be able to run free and extend their legs a little easier,” said Gervais.

She is optimistic a fence won’t be needed along the Souris River for the large dog park, as the committee wants to have

a wide-open but safe place for the larger dogs to run around.

The larger park will be about 2 1/2 acres in size, while the small park is a little less than an acre.

The dog park committee celebrated the grand opening of its small park last summer. Since then, it has been bustling with activity, with dogs and their owners frequently visiting the site.

“With the level of activity, people are outgrowing the small park,” said Gervais. “So we’re eager to

Even on the days when it’s raining outside and she wouldn’t expect anyone to come, she still sees someone in the park.

“Even on the Facebook page, they’ll make little dates to meet other people, even complete strangers, so it’s good to get the community to get to know each other,” said Gervais.

Upcoming book celebrates Estevan’s influence in growing culture across Saskatchewan

Lynn Gidluck hopes she can do justice to the role that Estevan played in the growth of the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Council (OSAC), and bringing culture to communities.

Gidluck is the author of a yet-untitled book that is slated to be released this year. She works with Benchmark Public Relations, and the book will be released through Benchmark Press.

“We are getting close to completion,” Gidluck said in an interview with Lifestyles. “I have a first draft done, which I’m getting ready to send off to the good folks in Estevan to take a look at. Whenever you’re trying to reconstruct history, you can only do so much with the historical documents that you have.”

She is glad that many of the people who played a key role in the rise of OSAC are still alive.

The book focuses on the years from 1974 to 1987, when OSAC’s head office was in Estevan. The story actually starts in 1948, when the Saskatchewan Arts Board was established. It was the first organization of its kind in North America.

“There was a lot of people on those original boards that wanted to see the arts promoted in rural Saskatchewan,” said Gidluck.

In 1968, OSAC was established, bringing some unity to the different councils.

In 1974, OSAC recruited Gallaway to be the executive director, thanks to the work she was doing locally to support concerts and the arts. Incredibly

Growing up in Biggar, she almost took for granted the concerts that were booked through OSAC and brought to smaller communities.

Estevan’s role with OSAC was the late Evelyn Johnson, a long-time Estevan resident and a champion of arts and culture who died last year. Johnson spent more than 40 years on the local arts council, including 15 years as the chair.

She was named a life member of OSAC in 1997.

“Evelyn was really convinced that not very many people recognize how fortunate Saskatchewan is to have such a well-established and vibrant system of arts council,” said Gidluck. “No provinces in Canada have anything like what Saskatchewan has with our arts councils, where smaller communities get to see provincial, national and even international-calibre performances.”

Gidluck agrees with Johnson’s sentiment that not many people realize the contributions of Gallaway and others from Estevan to OSAC. And she is sad Johnson died before the book was completed.

She spoke to a number of other people for the book, including former Estevan Mercury editor Norm Park, to get their recollections about OSAC during its time in the Energy City.

Gidluck says she has always had a keen interest in history. She loves hearing stories that speak to Saskatchewan’s uniqueness, and the growth of OSAC in the 1970s and 1980s is one of those unique stories that makes her proud to be from Saskatchewan.

stories of people working together to build something that’s so marvellous, it makes me really happy to be a storyteller, and to share that with other people,” said Gidluck. “We do have a lot to be proud of, and Estevan certainly can take pride in the fact that this work really started in Estevan, and now communities across the province are still able to have concerts and art shows in their communities that, in a lot of other provinces, it’s restricted to the larger cities.”

Everyone should have access to arts and culture, she said, and not just those in larger centres, she said.

Once the book has been reviewed, Gidluck said the photos and the design will have to be selected. And, of course, a name also has to be finalized. It should be available early in the fall.

She’s not sure if there will be a local book launch once it is released, but she noted the Estevan Arts Council provided some funding for the project, so they might want to have some sort of an event.

Gidluck said it has been a privilege to work with this project, and she is excited to promote good news stories like this one from smaller Saskatchewan communities.

Around and around Saskatchewan has adopted a European concept for the new overpass near Balgonie.

The government has opted for traffic circles, or roundabouts, for each end of the overpass. It’s a departure from what you would normally see. In fact, they’re the first traffic circles to be employed in this province for some time.

These are a popular, and seemingly efficient, means of taking care of traffic flows in Europe. They have been around for decades, and European motorists are used to them.

For many North Americans who have never been to Europe, and have never seen a traffic circle, our strongest memory of them might be the classic movie National Lampoon’s European Vacation, when Clark Griswold completes numerous laps in one, despite his family’s eventual annoyance.

These roundabouts are finding their way to North America, and are becoming more common in larger centres as a means to regulate traffic. They are cheaper than traffic lights, more efficient than four-way stops at busy intersections, and relatively easy to use if you’re used to them.

In fact, there was faint talk of having a traffic circle for the junction of Highway 47 and Estevan’s truck bypass.

We’re pretty happy that option wasn’t pursued.

If the Balgonie experiment pans out, we wonder how long it will be before they are employed elsewhere in the province, and if they would ever find their way to Estevan.

We can think of a few areas where a traffic circle might prove to be an effective option, such as the entrances for Walmart on Kensington Avenue.

It’s a busy area, but there likely isn’t enough traffic to warrant traffic lights. There are some heavy trucks that use those intersections for deliveries, but not a lot. And it would be easier to use a traffic circle than to turn left onto Kensington Avenue.

Other viable options might be Wellock Road and Souris Avenue North, and Perkins Street and Souris Avenue South.

Obviously, some reconfiguring of these intersections would need to happen for the traffic circle to be effective, but it might be worth a look.

At the same time, traffic circles require motorists to adapt, and we’ve seen recently that local motorists don’t always do a good job of making changes.

Just look at how people were confounded by the traffic flow changes near King Street and Bannatyne Avenue.

You thought people’s failures to adapt to that situation were ridiculous?

Imagine how tough it would be for some people to navigate a traffic circle for the first time.

Or imagine the rage that would permeate social media if someone wound up going in the wrong direction because they couldn’t quite grasp the concept of the roundabout.

Maybe we’ll just have to accept traffic patterns the way they are, and leave the roundabouts to Europe and overpasses.

This summer is likely to go down as one of the smoothest summers so far.

I think a large part of that is due to the age of my kids. They are becoming more and more independent, and that is a huge help in the flow of our days.

I’ve still been contemplating, though, what other things have contributed to making this summer simpler so here are a few of my summer hacks.

Less choices: You heard right.

We have been giving our kids fewer choices. I know that sounds counter culture in a lot of ways, but often in our desire to “give them all the things and experiences,” we were giving our kids way too many choices.

On our last vacay, we eliminated so many choices about how we were going to spend our time. We discussed as a family the things we wanted to do before we got there, and then while there my husband and I just made the itinerary without inviting discussion.

This resulted in no fighting, very little whining and a great time had by all. Even if they weren’t initially on board with the activity, they knew we were going to do it anyways so they flexed and had fun. Kids are resilient like that.

Routine: We still try to keep some routine in summer. Most kids do well when they know what to expect. For us that means 30 minutes of screen

time mid-morning after they have eaten and cleaned up breakfast, and read for 20 minutes, and another 30 minutes of screen time late afternoon, after they have done their chores and cleaned all toys from the main floor.

I get zero arguments about this because they know what to expect.

Meal plan: We are out and about enjoying summer and doing projects so supper is the last thing on my mind most days. Planning meals and having them ready to go early in the day is a huge life saver for me. I’m also loving the Instant Pot as I can have most meals totally done in less than 30 minutes.

Jeers to the reason(s) that we can’t keep a good number of doctors in Estevan. We will never make a regional hospital status at this rate.

Jeers To the teenagers that hang out at the 7-11 on 13th Avenue almost every night with their cars. Some people struggle to pull out of parking spots and some people hate going to that store, even if it is convenient.

Jeers to people who walk their dogs on Souris Avenue and allow their dogs to do their business on city property. Let the dogs do it on their own yards.

Jeers to the provincial government for deciding to go with passing lanes instead of twinning for Highways 39 and 6. Those roads won’t get any safer.

Roberta Gustafson says that when Estevan Diversified Services’ (EDS) woodworking division started making flags to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday, they never could have imagined how popular those flags would become.

Gustafson, who is a supervisor with EDS’s woodworking shop, reported they have sold 865 flags, as of Wednesday morning.

“The interest and sales exceeded anything that we would have dreamed would happen,” Gustafson said in an interview with Lifestyles. “We thought we would only sell a couple hundred, and the requests are apparently still coming in.”

The demand has kept the EDS participants very busy in the last few months. The volume of requests peaked in the weeks before July 1, which she expected.

“We tried to keep up with the demand, and we did the best we could,” said

Gustafson. “Everyone who put an order in was understanding of the wait.”

While the demand has slowed down since July 1, they continue to receive requests for the flags. They had 10 orders in one day recently.

“I thought they would slow down,” said Gustafson. “I thought everybody would want it before July 1.”

The flags consist of two-foot pieces of survey lath or plywood that are assembled to resemble a flag flapping into the wind.

They are painted red and white, with a maple leaf, and the number 150 painted in a corner.

Due to the number of orders, EDS had to get all of the participants from the activity centre and the paper centre to help the woodworking shop with the Canada 150 project.

The activity centre painted the 150 on the flags, while the paper division applied the red and white paint to the lath.

A total of 43 participants have been working on the project through the

three divisions.

“It raised the profile of EDS,” said Gustafson. “It brought people in to see what else we have made, and that’s helped with some sales. And our flags have found new homes.”

The flags are now located as far away as Quebec City, Seattle and Hawaii, and in various communities in Western Canada.

The flag in Hawaii is owned by a former Estevan resident. Other local people purchased the flags and had them shipped to family members in other communities.

She noted many of the campers in Moose Mountain Provincial Park have the flags at their sites.

EDS participants have been excited to see the flags across the community.

“When I take them on road trips to get supplies, they’ll say ‘There’s another one! There’s another one!’” said Gustafson.

Participants also crafted some larger flags, and EDS has sold a few of them.

Gustafson believes the popularity of the flags can be tied to national pride.

“I think we’re proud to be Canadian, and people like to show their pride,” said Gustafson. “And people say the flags are gorgeous. People couldn’t stop with the compliments on them. And hopefully it’s to support our agency, too.”

Gustafson said the Canada 150 project took on a life of its own. It started with a plan to put leftover raw materials to good use, and keep them out of the landfill. But it turned into a unique way for people to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday, and to showcase the abilities of the participants in all divisions.

Gustafson is a supervisor in the EDS woodworking division, along with Orvil Mahinay. Garnet Hall is the production manager at EDS, and came up with the idea for the flags.

The money from the sale of the flags will be directed to the operations of the agency, and to extra expenses not covered by funding, including renovations of a couple of apartments owned by EDS.

There are a lot of events coming up in Midale for the weekend of Aug. 4-6.

Friday, Aug. 4 will see the kickoff to the weekend with the annual Bull Bash and Cabaret bull riding event, starting at 7 p.m. There will be mutton busting at half time, a 50/50 draw and a shortround Calcutta. Lee Bellows will be the entertainer this year.

The bull riding will be followed by a cabaret featuring Ten Mile High.

Aug. 5 and 6 will feature the Souris Valley Antique Association’s Pioneer Echoes. Activities will kick off in the morning with a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. each day.

They are going to hold a 50/50 draw this year.

There will be a flea market and home business sale at the museum.

A church service will be

held at 11 a.m. on Sunday on the grounds. They will have some new hats and calendars for sale.

The antique tractor and car parade will begin at 2 p.m. each day and the live threshing demonstration will follow.

There will be bouncy houses, fried bread dough, live music, a dunk tank, kids’ rodeo and a Midale Central School reunion after the show on Aug. 5.

The Midale Oilmen’s Association held their 24th annual golf tournament at Mainprize Regional Park’s golf course on July 21, with 93 golfers attending. The winners of the low score for the round were Marc Henderson and Brad Henderson. They also won the horse race.

The renovations to the washrooms in the Midale Civic Centre are nearing completion. Midale and area residents are very lucky to have such generous donations to our facilities.

The kitchen is being cleaned and painted, thanks to the Midale Catering Club’s generosity.

The outer doors of the Midale Harry O’ Arena were recently painted free of charge by Fifth Street Auto Body in Estevan.

The Midale Swimming Pool is open and just finishing up the first session of swimming lessons. Everyone greatly appreciates all the hard work put in by the pool committee and especially everything done by Dennis McIndoe and Al Hauglum.

Without their many, many hours of work, the pool would not be open and it is absolutely amazing how great it looks. It has been quite busy, especially with the hot weather. Come out and check it out.

Documentary attracts crowd and raises funds The fundraising for the restoration of Locomotive 3522 in Bienfait continued on Sunday with a showing of the Locomotives of Bienfait documentary at the Orpheum Theatre in Estevan.

Bill Fraser, who directed the film and co-produced it alongside his wife Heather McKenzie, said it was a great day and they attracted about 100 people and raised about $800 for the restoration efforts.

Most of the money was raised through a raffle.

“This was our final event for the fundraiser,” said Fraser. “We have some other projects planned, and we need to get started on them.”

Combined with the $3,465 that has been raised through a GoFundMe campaign created by McKenzie, it brings the fundraising total for the campaign to more than $4,200.

“We’re very happy with it,” said Fraser.

“We’re really grateful to all of the people who came out to our shows, and went online and donated to the restoration of the locomotive.”

Their goal is $10,000.

The people of Estevan and Bienfait were very supportive in helping Fraser and McKenzie create the documentary, he said. And both times they have been to Estevan to show the documentary at the Orpheum, they came away happy they made the picture.

Fraser said he received a lot of positive comments about the documentary, particularly from older people who remember when the steam locomotives used to roll through the southeast, hauling coal to its destination.

“What was nice was there were people there who hadn’t seen it the first time, and they got to see it,” said Fraser. “It was a really good, positive experience for everybody.”

Fraser expects they will keep the GoFundMe page active until the end of August, and then the money that has been raised will be presented to the Town of Bienfait. It will be up to the town to decide the type of work that needs to be completed.

Fraser and McKenzie’s next project is called Salt, which is about Ted Hector and

Gary MacDonald, two men from Manitoba who are building a racing motorcycle, and taking it to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah later this year to try to set a world speed record.

White Bear First Nation receives funding The federal government announced new investments that will lead to the elimination of the long-standing drinking water advisory at the White Bear First Nation.

Approximately $9.2 million has been committed to help replace the community’s water treatment system, enabling more than 800 residents to access clean water for the first time in over five years.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly one in three adults in the United States has high blood pressure. Environment Minister Scott Moe is reminding livestock producers that 90,000 acres of Fish and Wildlife Development fund (FWDF) lands are available to producers for grazing until September 15.

This will enhance producers’ ability to manage potential feed shortage due to Saskatchewan’s current dry conditions.

“We know grazing and haying benefits wildlife habitat management and provides additional opportunities for producers,” Environment Minister Scott Moe said.

“That is why we are pleased to make this FWDF land available and hope this helps to address the challenges some producers are facing due to dry conditions.”

Recent crop reports state that significant rain is needed to enhance hay and pasture volumes. Currently, only 24 per cent of the Saskatchewan hay crop is cut and 39 per cent is baled or put into silage.

Therefore, the Ministry of Environment’s 90,000 acres of FWDF land could be a significant benefit to producers. To date, 23 Saskatchewan producers in 18 different rural municipalities have grazing agreements on FWDF lands.

The FWDF land, located throughout the province, is native prairie or other grasslands, and is typically used for conservation purposes. While some of the available land has water sources and is fenced, much of the land will require temporary fencing or water.

At the risk of overkill of the subject, I want to share a personal and family-related celebration linked directly to the current conflagration.

The beginning of this saga took place at an evacuation centre in central British Columbia where evacuees, upon the arrival from their various towns and regions, registered with the Red Cross. It was at this centre that my brother and his wife had arranged to meet their son and his family.

In a wonderful act of kindness, a nearby church also offered them, and the staff of a Bible camp our nephew manages, the use of their facilities. As they unloaded

With that so-called chance meeting and the execution of yet another act of kindness, our family circle widened.

As my brother, my nephew and the neighbour continued their conversation, they noted that that he and

our family shared a common surname. To make a long story short, each one quickly discovered that they were now speaking with previously unrealized branches of the clan. I can hardly describe the excitement we’ve all experienced as a result.

Since that discovery the men have met, shared stories and histories and made plans for mutual visits in the future.

Again, at the risk of becoming repetitious, if realizing that folks sharing our names and heritage live within driving distance can bring such overwhelming joy and excitement, I can’t even imagine what heaven will be like.

The price of benchmark West Texas Intermediate oil took a dip below US$50 per barrel in late May and hasn’t returned to that level since, dropping as low as $US42.53 on June 21.

That plunge in prices is now being reflected in local activity in the oilpatch.

Rod Benning is president of Estevan-based L&C Trucking. As a pipe custodian whose business is closely tied to drilling activity, they’re a good barometer for activity levels.

“It ramped up and then it died. It seemed to be picking up one to two months ago. It’s not what we expected,” Benning said on July 24.

Sister publication Rig Locator shows that as of July 24, there were 21 active drilling rigs in southeast Saskatchewan and another five in southwest Manitoba.

Benning said they are doing their best to keep employees. L&C had recently hired five new people. Two didn’t pan out, so they had a net gain of three. But now, with the reduced activity, there’s more people than they currently have work for. Currently the company has 32 people on staff, less than half of what they were at in 2014.

Right now they’re paying guys to stand around, but they’re keeping manpower in anticipation of future work. Benning added they have an obligation

ers in the area, Benning says a number of former workers have left the oilpatch, and aren’t expected to come back. Some have found work at mines, for instance. While the oilpatch may have had a good

run for eight to 10 years, this downturn is now several years old.

While July and August are generally slower paced due to holidays, Benning said, “The real story will be told in September.”

With regards to a recent Financial Post article which described a surge of oil activity in this province, Benning said, “It’s not as rosy as they may think.”

“It’s still better than last year.”

On July 12, 2016, Rig Locator reported just 15 rigs active for the entire province, including the typically busy Kindersley area. On July 24, 2017, the provincial number of active rigs was 48.

A poker run of a different kind The Estevan Art Gallery and Museum is putting a different spin on a couple types of fundraisers that have proven popular in the Estevan area.

The organization will host a five-kilometre poker-run walk on Aug. 19 at the Woodlawn Regional Park. The event starts at 9 a.m. It brings together the concept of a fundraising run/walk and a poker derby.

Director Amber Andersen said participants will be handed a card every kilometre.

“People will pick up the card, and then at the end of the race, the last card will be the river card,” said Andersen.

“When the race is completely finished at 10 a.m., that’s when we will see who has the highest or the best hand, if you will.”

The people with the best hands will select from the prizes.

Since the prizes will be awarded to the best poker hands, it will be a non-competitive run and walk, she said. Ander-

sen encourages those who aren’t avid runners to participate.

“This is for everybody,” she said.

The EAGM has had some people register already. Participants will pay a registration fee, rather than collect pledges. Registrations will be accepted until shortly before the walk begins.

Andersen said one of the EAGM’s board members, Kathryn Gilliss, came up with the idea for the fundraiser. Gilliss participates in the various walks and runs around the community, and Andersen believes this will be a fun take on the conventional poker derby.

“We are always trying, especially with the board with their fundraising ideas, to try things that are unique in the hopes of reaching out to people who maybe haven’t heard of us, or don’t know what we’re about,” said Andersen.

“This is a way to get them interested, and maybe find out that we have a gallery here, that we have a museum here, and that we’re always doing different events to attract different audiences.”

The money raised at the poker derby will be directed towards the EAGM’s programming and the maintenance of its building.

Southside Slammers stay sharp with Magic wins

The Southside Slammers U16 girls softball team had a bit of time between their success at provincials and their chance to go to nationals.

So coaches for the team set up a pair of exhibition weekends against the WestMan Magic out of Brandon in the weeks between the games. The Slammers earned a spot at nationals Aug. 9-13 at Delta, B.C. when they placed fourth at provincials earlier this month in Regina. The team focused on situational hitting and some of the other aspects of their game including bunting, stealing bases and the mental aspects of softball.

Local trapshooters successful at provincial championships

Several local trapshooters took aim and claimed provincial championships in Regina recently.

Five members were able to stake a claim at the 2017 Saskatchewan Provincial Championship, hosted July 13-16 at the Regina Trap Club.

Logan King, already with a national title this season, won the Saskatchewan doubles championship out of a field of 52 by shooting 95

out of 100 targets. King also won the Saskatchewan high all around championship by getting a score of 380/400 and won the Saskatchewan high overall championship with a score of 643/700 targets.

It was a tremendously successful weekend for King, who also won the Saskatchewan junior singles championship and the Saskatchewan junior handicap championship provincials.

“We tried some different things,” Walter said. “We had some different players in new positions and we also manufactured runs. We played some small ball today, which we kind of struggled with during the year. A lot of those type games at nationals, you’re going to need to move a runner from first to third and squeeze to just maybe pull out a win.

That’s why we were working on such a small side of the game.”

Walter feels that if the Slammers can get runners in good positions for the key hitters at the plate, they’ll be better served by the stiff competition at nationals.

“A lot of our game is speed,”

he said. “We have a lot of girls who can run. We can go first to third on bunts, we can steal bases and get girls into scoring position.”

The team’s ability to stay sharp in situations will be key at nationals, as will the ability to stay focused when the games are threatening to get out of hand on the scoreboard, like their first game last week.

While they could have let their feet off the gas pedal, the Slammers continued to score runs until they game was in mercy rule, which is important if suddenly the pitching stops being consistent.

The schedule for nationals hasn’t been released yet.

Saskota League playoffs take place this weekend

With the final games of the Saskota Baseball League regular season out of the way, the league playoffs will be getting underway this weekend.

The top eight teams in the league have been placed into the Harbourne Memorial Tournament, with the top four teams getting a home date Friday before the tournament continues Saturday and Sunday in Kenosee.

The Wawota Pats (7-11) travel to Estevan to play the Tower Wolves (13-4-1) starting at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The other games, all starting at 6:30 p.m., will see the Redvers A’s (7-9-2) going to Caryle to play the Cardinals (12-3-3), the Carnduff Astros (8-9-1) playing at the Arcola Threshers (12-5-1), and the Kenosee Cubs (8-7-3) playing at the Oxbow Chiefs (10-4-4).

Games continue until the gold medal game Sunday at 6 p.m. at Kenosee.

The Senior Tier II Saskatchewan Baseball Association provincials will take place in Yorkton Aug. 1113. Taking part in that tournament from the Saskota League will be Carlyle, the Tower Wolves and Oxbow.

Carnduff will travel to Unity that weekend for the Tier III provincials, and Kenosee and Arcola will go to Standard Hill for the Tier IV provincials.

The Windthorst Pirates (3-12-3) are hosting Tier V provincials this year, with Redvers also taking part.
