Mission team will help refugees

The refugee situation in Syria and other countries has captured the attention of people around the globe. World leaders have been debating the best way to handle the humanitarian crisis.

It’s also led a group of 10 people, including several current and former Estevan residents, to take action with a mission trip to help refugees in France in December.

Dani Stobbs-Gallipeau and her husband, Matt Gallipeau, are former Estevan residents who now reside in Edmonton. They will be leading the team.

Current Estevan residents Tim and Annette Dyck are on the trip, along with former residents Brandon Gallipeau (now living in Eston) and Angela Guild and Keiron Gallipeau (now residing in Edmonton).

Rounding out the team

are Des Belford (Edmonton), Marcy Kimball (Medicine Hat, Alberta) and McKenzii Crockett (North Battleford). They have named their group the Songs of Hope.

Stobbs-Gallipeau said she felt compelled to travel overseas after reading the news in recent weeks, and getting a grasp on the situation.

“I just felt really moved to want to do something, to be face-to-face with these people,” Stobbs-Gallipeau told Lifestyles. “And so I just contacted my husband at work one day, and said I just feel like we need to go and do something beyond giving money to a humanitarian organization.”

He agreed, and they started to plan for the trip.

They aren’t working with an organization, although Stobbs-Gallipeau said it is a Christian mission trip. The team will fly to England on December 9, and spend a couple of

Carnduff’s new dog park almost ready to open

Off-leash dog parks have become a popular amenity in larger centres – a place where people can take their dogs, and let them run around without the restraints of a leash.

But thanks to the efforts of some dedicated people in Carnduff, the town is about to have a dog park of their own, less than a year after they held their first meeting.

The Carnduff Bark Park is scheduled to open at the end of this month. Committee members and other volunteers gathered on September 19 and 20 to tackle one of the last remaining tasks – installing a fence around the perimeter of the park.

The park is located in the southwest corner of Carnduff, behind the baseball diamonds, and it covers three to four acres.

Dog park committee chair Krista Johnson is very familiar with the concept – she regularly used the off-leash dog park in Weyburn when she lived in that community. If she’s visiting a city with such a

park, she’ll be certain to visit it.

“We’ve taken ideas from all of them,” said Johnson.

When she moved to Carnduff, she realized the only suitably large, open space in the community was the school grounds.

“I would go over there outside of school hours with my dogs, and I noticed other people were, too, but they weren’t cleaning up,” said Johnson.

Johnson approached the town council about starting a dog park, and issued a call for volunteers. Fifty people said they would use such a park, and 10 people offered to sit on the committee.

“We fundraised everything,” said Johnson. “We had a few private donations – probably about $2,000 worth of private donations. And we’ve fundraised about $10,000.”

The money will cover the cost of getting the park ready for its opening, but they haven’t stopped with their fundraising efforts. A raffle is among their upcoming initiatives.

Once the park opens, the committee will schedule volunteers to make sure the

garbage cans are emptied, the grass is cut and snow is removed. They also hope to install lighting in the fall and irrigation in the spring.

A sign at the park’s entrance reminds users of the importance of cleaning up after their dogs.

Johnson admits she is surprised with how quickly the park has come together.

“We had an amazing committee,” said Johnson. “We have eight women now who sit on the committee, and everyone is full force and really dedicated. The community support has been really good, too.”

They were optimistic the park could open this year, but initially they believed the spring of 2016 represented a more realistic opening date.

“We never asked for donations,” said Johnson. “Because of the economy this year, we wanted to fundraise. We didn’t want to ask the businesses and people for donations, because everyone’s feeling the pinch right now. So we’re pretty proud that we were able to fundraise pretty much all the money that we needed to open.”

The park is divided into two areas: one

for dogs that weigh at least 30 pounds, and another for smaller dogs. Smaller dogs are allowed with their larger counterparts, but Johnson said doing so will be at the owner’s risk.

When people enter the park, there will be a common area, and after closing the outside door, they can decide which part of the park they want to access.

The land where the dog park is located is very nice, she said. There are a lot of trees on each side of the park.

“We have a nice big group of trees in the middle where we’ve trimmed all the branches up to six to eight feet, so you will be able to see your dog wherever it goes within the park,” said Johnson.

It will be free to access, although the Carnduff Bark Park committee asks anyone who uses it on a regular basis to register with the Town of Carnduff, and provide proof of vaccination.

Johnson doesn’t know of another small town that has a dog park, but it’s a testament to their volunteers and community support that it’ll be open less than a year after the first meeting.

Local election race lacks depth Residents in Weyburn and Moosomin will have an opportunity to hear from the candidates in the upcoming federal election, thanks to candidates’ forums.

But residents in Estevan – the largest community in the constituency – likely won’t have the same opportunity. The Estevan Chamber of Commerce probably won’t host such a forum, citing the probability that two candidates wouldn’t attend.

The chamber has hosted such a forum for every civic, provincial and federal election since 2003.

It’s not only disappointing for residents in the Estevan area, but it’s also discouraging for people throughout the riding that we can’t get a stronger field of candidates.

This riding has been a Conservative stronghold since its formation in 1988. The exception was 1993 to 1997, when Liberal Bernie Collins was the representative in Ottawa. Retiring Conservative MP Ed Komarnicki had the largest margin of victory for any Saskatchewan MP in the last federal election.

Also, all five provincial constituencies that fall within Souris-Moose Mountain’s boundaries have been held by the right-of-centre Saskatchewan Party since 1999.

These are the daunting odds facing anyone who challenges the Tories and their new candidate, Estevan chiropractor Dr. Robert Kitchen, who is impressive, articulate and determined to continue the Tory dynasty in SourisMoose Mountain.

The New Democratic Party has found a good candidate. Vicky O’Dell, a union leader from Weyburn, has been working tirelessly for weeks, attending events, knocking on doors and meeting with people. She took a leave of absence from her employer for the campaign.

People will tell you she doesn’t have a chance, but O’Dell didn’t get the memo. She deserves a lot of credit for the time and effort she has dedicated.

The other candidates haven’t had a strong presence.

Bob Deptuck is once again representing the Green Party. A safety facilitator for Potash Corp. who resides in Rocanville in the far northeast corner of the constituency, Deptuck ran for the Greens in 2008 and 2011.

He has proven to be a capable candidate in previous elections, but he knew he had as much chance of being elected in Souris-Moose Mountain as his party did of forming government.

Deptuck has always been willing to participate and engage in debates, so it would be surprising if he couldn’t attend this time.

As for the Liberals, for the second time in three elections, they have found a parachute candidate who resides well outside of the riding: Steve Bebbington of Earl Grey. He’s young and politically astute, but he won’t be participating in debates and doing other things that would be classified as a candidate’s minimal amount of work.

It makes you wonder why candidates run when they can’t commit the necessary time. Parties might be better off bypassing a constituency, than fielding a proverbial phantom who is an absentee candidate.

We’re impressed with Kitchen and O’Dell and their abilities. It would be nice if the other candidates were as active.

They work hard and they are not afraid to push outside of their comfort zone. People in this city are generous and kind. Just this week I have witnessed dozens of perfect strangers step up to support and give to a family in need. And not just step up, but to go far beyond the norm.

Our city has a lot to offer its citizens. I may miss being 90 minutes from lake country, but even living there I couldn’t grab the kayaks and the kids and be on the water within five minutes. Within 10 minutes I can be at

the dam and utilize the beach or boat on the water.

I love that a massive leisure center is three minutes from my door, making it perfect for keeping my kids active through the winter and beyond. For a city our size we have a surplus of activities and sports for our kids to be involved in, and these are all offered primarily by volunteers.

These community members value our youth and sacrifice their time and energy to afford them so many great opportunities. I love how the churches

in Estevan work together. You see it in the ministerial association, the food bank and the city wide worship nights – it’s a really cool thing.

Most of us in relationships or parents have come to realize the power in our words, so I challenge us as a community to be intentional about our words concerning our city.

Rather than complaining or labelling our home, let’s speak life.

Let’s publicly appreciate people, let’s point out the great things and let’s be thankful for the city we live in.

release it into night, just as I do every spring. Late rains and regular watering from the hose kept soil wet enough to hatch the seedlings. Who wouldn’t wanna grow there?

Now covered, with the heat insurance of plastic and enough ventilation to

ensure damping off doesn’t happen, this September spring promises young greens well into October, depending on what kind of winter comes to us and how steep the drop in overnight temperatures.

I’m certainly not heating the greenhouses. Eventually I want the freezing temperatures of winter to clean them of insects and disease.

For now, oh the thrill of fresh greens. When lettuce gets bitter and bolts late in the year and frosts begin; when Farmer dumps

a wrecked hay bale to the pigs because it’s harder to find them enough fresh garden weeds to meet their appetite for greens; when it’s almost time to cut cabbages and make the last of the kraut, a September spring is about the nicest surprise a person could find in the garden.

And what brought this on? The desiccating summer and a few cold days of late harvest rain; not your even, perfect gardening conditions type of growing season. Pain brought gain.

Scenery changes from the land to the sea Relentless rain and wind arrived, but the trees hardly moved; needlestraight and bereft of foliage on the greatest part of their trunks, most stand in close proximity to each other.

Every once in a while there are gaps between swaying green crowns, providing space enough to see

what lies beyond.

Marching ‘round the first bend in the walking track, my eyes move from Pacific expanses to a dense, verdant stand of pine trees.

The change of scenery is sudden and complete for even on brightest days the scene is dark with a hint of risk. Someone or something could be in there but

not likely, I tell myself.

If things go as planned, however, there will be someone there – four hundred someones, in fact. Negotiations have been underway for months, if not years, for the construction of a large school on the property. Near the current high school building, this one will house students

from mainland China, a series of events that will inexorably change the entire culture of our community.

Already investors from that country have pumped money into our economy; already, businesses long sporting “For Sale” signs have been purchased by investors. Some citizens are happy; others, not so much.

In my mind, it’s a time to give thanks: thanks for a potentially significant boost to our struggling economy; thanks for new challenges; thanks for the opportunity to learn; and thanks for the opportunities to demonstrate the values of openness and kindness we claim to possess.

There may even be oppor-

tunities to learn another language.

I’m soon walking parallel to the forest and I can’t help but think of God’s tender care for His all His creation.

Sernick family has returned to Estevan

By David Willberg Payton Sernick and her family have enjoyed a couple of milestones as Payton continues her recovery from cancer.

Her family returned to their home in Estevan, after spending nearly a year in Regina while she underwent chemotherapy.

And she has returned to Sacred Heart School/ École Sacré Coeur, which she is enrolled in the Grade 2 French Immersion class.

Payton, the sevenyear-old daughter of Andrea and Cheyenne Sernick, was diagnosed with Stage 4 lymphoma and leukemia last October, and spent months undergoing chemotherapy treatments in Regina. Her family temporarily relocated to Regina so they could be near where she was receiving treatments.

They returned to Estevan in the second week of September.

“She’s adjusting to going back to school and we’re trying to get ducks in a row for making sure that she’s feeling well, and she’s trying not to catch anything,” Andrea Sernick told Lifestyles.

Payton Sernick is excited to be back in Estevan, and to return to classes at Sacred Heart School/École Sacré Coeur. She was diagnosed with cancer last October.

The most intense chemotherapy sessions in Regina are finished, but Payton’s treatments aren’t

over. She will have to take a chemotherapy pill at home for the next 18 months. She is also tak-

ing other medications and steroids to help get her strength back.

“Her system is immunocompromised, so she’s very susceptible to getting ill very quickly,” said Andrea. “We’re trying to do all we can to keep down germs and have her still in a healthy stage.”

Payton also has to travel to Regina every four weeks for treatments.

And she will have blood work monitored in Regina for five years, which means treatments and tests will continue into the next decade.

“Her system should catch up, and hopefully be a little bit better after a year-and-a-half, but we still have to be cautious,” said Andrea. “Every infection is still troublesome for us.”

She also has a portacath installed under her skin on her chest, which is where her needles get accessed. The port will remain until the 2017-18 school year.

Chicken pox, for example, could lead to hospitalization for Payton, since it is highly contagious and spread through the air. The risk remains for her coming down with severe symptoms with re-

Andrea said the support from the community has been “amazing” throughout the past year.

There was a fundraising dinner in March that raised tens of thousands of dollars, helping the Sernick family with their expenses.

“Just having friends and family and people who truly care about how you’re doing and how your day is going certainly means everything in the world,” said Andrea.

People have asked how Payton is doing when they have seen the Sernicks around the community.

There have also been messages, letters, notes and phone calls for the family, both while they were in Regina and since they returned to Estevan. The Sernick family is grateful for that support.

The family has to be careful with so many different things now that they’re back in Estevan, and they have to constantly monitor how she is doing, acting and feeling.

Andrea added the school has been very supportive since Payton returned to class. While it has been nerve-wracking to have her back in school, and she won’t be able to be in class every day, returning to classes was still great for Payton.

“She is so happy to be back with her … teachers and her friends, and to have something that’s a little more normal to her,” said Andrea. “She’s doing well in Grade 2, and hopefully she can be in school as many days as possible.”

ed the radios on Tuesday afternoon. The technology will be used to communicate during emergencies and other situations. They have an estimated value of $5,000, and more radios may be donated in the future.

St. Joseph’s executive director Greg Hoffort said the radios can be used in different circumstances.

Just over a year ago, they had a complete blackout at the hospital due to a failure in a backup generator.

Phones and the public address system were down.

“In a situation like that, to have these two-way radios, we would be able

to have them stationed around the hospital so the key people can communicate with one another in the time of need,” said Hoffort.

During the torrential downpour Estevan received earlier this month, some areas of the hospital took on some water, which shorted out the paging system.

Hoffort said the radios will also be useful for night communication between supervisors and maintenance staff.

“This is a very large facility, and with the radios’ availability, staff will be able to stay in con-

stant communication, which is important for a building’s safety and security measures,but also to minimize the use of overhead paging to provide less patient disturbances as well,” said Hoffort.

Regardless of where maintenance people are in the building, supervisors will be able to reach them at any time.

Prairie Horizons sets targets for success

By Norm Park Removing time constraints, digging down to attack problems associated with the formal learning process, recovering high school credits and monitoring results.

Those were a few of the elements discussed by Jason Petlak, principal at Oxbow’s Prairie Horizons School, a Kindergarten to Grade 12 facility with an enrolment of about 400 students.

Making a student back up and repeat months of work when they’re on the cusp of success, just doesn’t make sense, said Petlak. Lending assistance to the struggling student, to get them over the failure line and onto a path of success, does.

That’s why Prairie Horizons incorporates strategies such as credit recovery, course completion extensions, alternate classes, online offerings and accelerated learning opportunities for students who are on a swift educational path.

ing a presentation to the members of the board of education of the South East Cornerstone Public School Division when they gathered in Weyburn on Sept. 17 for a monthly business session.

The credit recovery program, he explained, simply gives students who have not completed or have failed a course, the chance to upgrade assignments or complete

unfinished assignments in a timely manner. These opportunities are afforded to those who were close to passing a particular subject but encountered a life event or impediment that stalled their forward motion.

The course completion extensions, he said, “takes some pressure off when they get the time to get things done.

“It might mean setting

aside two semesters to complete a math course, rather than one. The reduction in time pressures can make a huge difference when they know they have extra time to complete the course.”

Contract or independent study classes have become popular at Prairie Horizons, too. These are classes more suited to the student’s needs, or those who want to complete a course more quickly.

Currently there are six courses that can be modified to help students fasttrack their learning curves without missing any steps.

Petlak noted the Oxbow school makes good use of CyberStone Virtual School, the school division’s on-line classrooms.

Their classes are usually picked up by higher achieving students for the most part. “Those who struggle really need the one-on-one contact with our teachers,” said Petlak.

Those who are on an accelerated track though, do find a home at Prairie Horizons because they can be challenged. Petlak cited a couple of examples

Lynn Little, the director of education, said presentations such as Petlak’s and another from Hillcrest School in Estevan, are provided at educational conferences.

“That’s good to hear,” said White, “because they are pretty inspirational.”

Envision will use federal funding to expand its rural programs

By Norm Park Envision Counselling and Support Centre announced last week they have received federal funding that will enable them to expand and improve the quality of their services in southeast Saskatchewan.

The funding allows the agency to further develop its programming to meet needs in its service area and that will include expansion of services in the Oxbow and Carlyle sector.

Christa Daku, executive director at Envision that maintains offices in Estevan, Weyburn and Carlyle, said they launched a pilot project last year to attack the growing concerns related to prostitution and other underground issues that put women at risk.

“We can now move from pilot project status to implementation with an addition to programming with a parttime office in Oxbow Monday through Thursday,” Daku said.

The additional services began in early September and the counsellor stationed in Oxbow will received back-up administrative support from the Estevan office.

Daku said Envision now boasts more than 80 employees and volunteers whose main objective is to provide support for those in need of morale, social and physical support.

Registrations coming in for half marathon Registrations are starting to be filed for the Estevan Police Service’s (EPS) inaugural half marathon on Oct. 4.

Police Chief Paul Ladouceur said they have about 25 people already signed up, and they are hopeful they will have an influx of participants coming in during the final days before the event.

“We’ve seen it before where people register the week prior … so we’re

pushing for people to register,” said Ladouceur.

Walkers will begin at 7:30 a.m., and the runners and a three-person relay will start an hour later.

The new track-and-field facility at the Estevan Comprehensive School will serve as the startfinish line, and the route will cover 21 kilometres through northern Estevan.

Walkers and runners are encouraged to com-

plete the full 21-kilometre distance. While they will be timing the walkers and the runners, Ladouceur said this is for fun.

Also, people don’t have to complete the full 21 kilometres. The EPS has received inquiries from people who want to go five kilometres or another distance.

The relay is among the options for those looking at a shorter run.

“You don’t have to be

an avid athlete to partake,” said Ladouceur. “This is just an opportunity for the community to get out, and hopefully enjoy a beautiful day.”

There will be a barbecue following the half marathon.

The EPS was approached by local resident Terina Shaw earlier this year about hosting the event. Shaw has played an active role in planning, Ladouceur said.

Thanks to the support of local businesses and other sponsors, the EPS will have minimal expenses for the half marathon, so they will be able to purchase more Games tickets.

The 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games are a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity for the city, the police chief said, and it’ll be great for local youth to be inspired by young athletes from across the province.

Proceeds from the half marathon will be used to purchase tickets for disadvantaged youth to attend the 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games in Estevan. The EPS also directed proceeds from their open house in August to purchasing Games tickets.

“We’re hopeful at the end of the day we’ll be able to buy numerous tickets for those kids to attend the Games,” said Ladouceur.

Bruins built to win this year

By Jamie Harkins When talking to different Saskatchewan Junior A Hockey League (SJHL) coaches about how their teams will stack up this year, many of them said they’ll use the CanElson Drilling Estevan Bruins as their measuring stick.

Chris Lewgood, head coach and general manager of the Bruins, said he’ll just stick to worrying about his own team. He said the Bruins are a veteran team built to contend for the 2016 Crescent Point Energy Western Canada Cup, which they are hosting next May, and they know the other clubs may consider them a team they have to play hard against.

But they can only focus on what is in their own locker room.

“We set out a three-year plan prior to being named the host of the Western Canada Cup,” said Lewgood. “We felt that this was a good year where we could hit our stride as a group. This is my third year with the program and the third year for a lot of our staff. As a result we’ve taken some time to build to where we think we can plateau and maintain success long-term, and this is the first year of that plateau.”

Lewgood said the exciting thing about this year’s team is they don’t have a single identity. He said there is a depth of abilities on the roster, ranging from talented playmakers like Darcy DeRoose to grinding forwards like Levi Barnstable, to puck-moving defencemen such as Kobe Eagletail, and then physical punishers like rearguard Josh Rieger.

“We can play a slow it down east west hockey game or we can turn up the tempo and outskate the opposition if that’s what’s

best suited for the game,” he said. “With the experience and variety we have available to us with this group, we feel that we can accommodate any sort of game plan.”

The Bruins’ forward group is both skilled and big, as evidenced by new acquisitions Owen LaClare and returning winger DeRoose, who each put up a point per game last season, or more in the case of LaClare, and are a match physically at six-foot-three and 200 pounds. They are joined by a group of smooth skaters in newly appointed captain Keegan Allison (20 goals, 47 points and 71 penalty minutes in 50 games), veteran Jason Duret (11 goals and 41 points in 49 games) and local product Chase McKersie (11 points and 10 PIM in 51 games) among others, who make the group a four-line threat.

“We have three returning defencemen on the backend, but we believe them to be three of the best defencemen in the SJHL,” said Lewgood, noting they are filling out the core with three younger players. “It’s probably an area where we’ll look to improve on as the year goes on, but we’re focused right now on the guys that are here and we’re pretty excited about this group.”

Manning the pipes for the Bruins is the calming presence of Tyler Fuhr and backup Tyler Gutenberg. After coming over from La Ronge in a November trade, Fuhr posted a .914 save percentage and recorded 14 wins in 28 games with Estevan.

“He’s going to definitely start the season as our starter and we have no reason to believe he’ll falter. He was one of our best players last year. He played very consistently and we expect more of the same out of him this year.”

The Estevan Bruins are sporting a number of big additions this season in their forward group, starting with former Kindersley Klipper Braden Oleksyn.

Lots of changes in Finning Division The Kramer Division is now the Finning Division, but that is not the only change coming for the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League division in 2015-16, as last year’s division-winning Kindersley Klippers are now mired in the bowels of a rebuild.

The Battlefords North Stars and Humboldt Broncos, who finished third and fourth, respectively, in the division last season, are also experiencing change this year with the hope that new players, staff and approaches will help them each come together as a team and play good hockey.

And last season’s second-place Notre Dame Hounds, who made it to the Canalta Cup final before bowing out in four games to the Melfort Mustangs, are once again shaping up to be a championship contender this season.

“We have to be very patient,” said Battlefords North Stars head coach and general manager Kevin Hasselberg. “We want our guys to express themselves on the ice. We’re going to give them the rope, especially early in the year and let them find their own chemistry and fully identify what our culture is going to be moving forward.”

The North Stars new carry-the-puck playing style should fit in well with their returning cast of talented forwards, including Reed Delainey and Igor Leonenko, along with new additions Bryce Hall, Connor Navrot and Colby Downs. Hasselberg said the defence will also feature a new group of players able to move the puck and skate well.

“With our patience and their work ethic,” said Hasselberg, “we could become that team that we envision ourselves being.”

Darcy Haugan, the first-year head coach and general manager of the Humboldt Broncos, said he’s not sure what the team has to offer heading into the year considering they have only nine returnees from last season and he’s only been around the team since last month.

He said the view from the preseason shows a fast group of forwards who can score by committee, and a defence led by five SJHL veterans.

“The bottom line is you have to win hockey games,” said Haugan, who guided the North Peace Navigators to a North West Junior B Hockey League title last season. “That’s what we’ll try to figure out.”

Kindersley Klippers first year head coach and general manager Geoff Grimwood admits the team is in the first year of a rebuild. The club has only six returnees from last year’s team, as Darcy DeRoose, Owen LaClare and Braden Oleksyn were dealt to the Estevan Bruins; top-scoring defenceman Shaun MacPherson graduated from junior hockey; and 12 other players aren’t back from last year’s team for various reasons.

“We like our goaltending,” said Grimwood. “It’s two veteran guys in Matt Zentner and Nathan Hargrave.

We feel comfortable there. The back end, there is still

not a clear picture of how it’s going to shape out. There are a lot of young players and a lot of rookies there.

“But Branden Scheidl is one of the better players in the league and we’re going to rely heavily on him. Up front, there’s not a lot of individually gifted offensive ability, but a lot of good depth, so we feel strong there.”

Clint Mylymok, head coach and general manager of the Notre Dame Hounds, was reserved in his assessment of his team, noting they have lost last season’s leading scorer Sam Aulie and top offensive defenceman Spencer Trapp, along with a group of players who brought a physical edge to the team. He said their big strength going into the year is the experience his young players got during last year’s run to the Canalta Cup as they try to become junior A players this season.

“It’s not an unknown to them going into other rinks playing guys at that level who are stronger,” said Mylymok. “They got a taste of it last year. That was the whole purpose of bringing them along. They’re going to build off that experience and not be a wide-eyed first-year player coming into a good league.”

It may be a season of change for most teams in the 2015-16 version of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL), but some things are always bound to remain the same.

In the SJHL, that would be a strong Sherwood Division consisting of a Canalta Cup champion looking to repeat, two perennial favourites hoping for another shot and a group in La Ronge trying to dig themselves out of the basement.

“It’s going to be a dogfight each and every night,” said Nipawin Hawks head coach and general manager Doug Johnson about playing in the Sherwood against the reigning champion Melfort Mustangs, the always strong Flin Flon Bombers and the up-and-coming La Ronge Ice Wolves.

“It’s one of the great things about our league.

There are no easy games.

Melfort, they’re defending champs, so until proven otherwise that’s what they are. Flin Flon always has a strong team. Mike (Reagan) does a great job up there, and I know Shawn (Martin) does a good job in La Ronge and I know he’s going to have a good team too. I think the Sherwood is going to be the best division in the SJHL with the most parity. It’s going to make us

better in the end.”

Johnson said the Hawks are welcoming three of the league’s top 15 scorers last season back to the team in Kris Spriggs, Garrett Dunlop and Chase Thudium, which should solidify their offence. He said they’ll also have two of their top three scoring rearguards back in Stefan Wood and Ian Wolkowicz to lead the defence, but their new goaltending tandem of Kristian Stead and Michael Barabash remains an unknown.

“We usually let the players sort things out and I think if they are both playing equal then they’re just going to keep battling and splitting time,” he said. “If one guy separates himself then he’s going to get the majority of games.

Like all coaches, we like to win here and we’re going to give ourselves the best chance to win each and every night.”

Bombers head coach and general manager Mike Reagan said they have lost some important pieces from the team built to win a Canalta Cup last season, but the good news is their plan was to have a two-year run. He said their top line of Brandon Switzer, Alex Smith and Joel Kocur are all pointper-game players and the additions of rookie forwards

“I think that Shumlanski and Lesko have the capabilities of contending for the SJHL rookie of the year,” said Reagan about the two former point-pergame midget AAA players.

“Then with Zac Robidoux coming in, we got the national championship win-

ning goaltender for Portage la Prairie, so you add a guy like that, it obviously brings confidence.”

Shawn Martin, head coach and general manager of the La Ronge Ice Wolves, said they started the rebuild process last year and by returning seven forwards, four defencemen and their starter in net, they are expecting a much stronger team this season than the one that missed the playoffs by a single point.

He said the veterans are a

group that combines speed and size and will play an aggressive game that focuses on being strong defensively.

“We had some guys that were younger last year who were put in some tough situations where they faced firstline players, 18 and 19-yearold guys,” said Martin. “They answered the bell fairly well last year. We’re looking for them to get better this year and that means offensively and defensively.”

Collage will be a celebration of cultures Food, entertainment and cultural vendors will all be part of the Collage Cultural Festival on Saturday at the Estevan Leisure Centre’s multipurpose room.

The all-day event will begin at 10 a.m. Southeast Newcomer Services will be organizing this year’s festivities.

“What we have confirmed are pavilions from different countries, performances from different countries and entertainment all day long and from different age groups,” said SNS pro-

gram co-ordinator Waed Dakkak.

The Chung Wah Kung Fu martial arts dancers from Regina will perform a lion dance and provide kung fu and tai chi demonstrations. The Bhangra East Indian Community, also from Regina will perform some of their dances.

Parthivi Bhatt, a nineyear-old girl whose family recently moved to Estevan, will perform the Indian Classical Dance.

Dakkak said it takes seven years to fully learn the dance, and Parthivi has

already spent three years.

The local Me’ira Belly Dance Troupe will showcase their talents with several of routines. The Drewitz School of Dance will perform dances from Hungary, Ukraine, Scotland and Ireland. Midale’s Nadia Babchouk will play music from eight different countries on her violin.

The East Indian, Mediterranean, Filipino, Ukrainian and Jamaican communities are slated to

have pavilions at Collage.

Dakkak said they hope to have a few other cultures participate Some of the exhibitors will be preparing food, ensuring there will be a variety of cuisine for people to sample enjoy. Dakkak said it’s not always easy for the exhibitors to have food at their booths.

“One of the African communities declined because most of the ingredients are not avail-

able here,” said Dakkak.

“They always have to order it online, or drive up to Regina or Saskatoon to pick their supplies. When it’s not available here, it makes it difficult for them to participate.”

There will also be photography booths and Henna artists on site.

“We are still looking for volunteers, if anyone is interested,” said Dakkak.

“We have contacted the Estevan Comprehensive

School to ask for volunteers, since many of the high school kids need to complete their volunteer hours.”

Dakkak said they have received a lot of inquiries about Collage, and she expects the interest will pick up as the event draws closer.

“We want everyone to enjoy the day, and the good food, and spend the entire day with us,” said Dakkak.

Two of these plays have already been successfully drilled and the third will be tested in the fourth quarter of this year.

The company has recently completed an extensive geological review of its southeast Saskatchewan assets. Detailed geological mapping of the reservoir, supported by core analysis and 3D seismic, has enabled the company to refine its stratigraphic model in southeast Saskatchewan.

In total the company has mapped 989 (797 net) drilling locations in Saskatchewan, including 669 (518 net) open-hole locations in southeast Saskatchewan.

All of these open-hole locations are supported by geology, core and DST analysis and 3D seismic.

The company expects to drill a total of 27.9 net open-hole wells in the third and fourth quarters of this year, bringing its annual total to 44.8 net open-hole wells.

paid dividends, as we are benefiting from service cost reductions and improved operational efficiencies,” the company said in a press release.

Current costs (DC&E) on Spartan’s open-hole wells are approximately $850,000 to $900,000. This represents a decrease of approximately 20 per cent as compared to 2014 and directly contributes to the very attractive rate of return that the open-hole wells are able to generate at US$45 West Texas Intermediate.

For example, the company said its tier one openhole Frobisher wells on Crown land at US$45.04 WTI generate a before tax internal rate of return (IRR) of 95.8 per cent and pay out in 1.1 years. Tier one open-hole Frobsiher wells on freehold lands generate an IRR of 53 per cent and payout in 1.6 years.

Since break up Spartan has identified five additional open-hole wells in southeast Saskatchewan that all have at least 30 days of production data. The IP30 rates for these five wells average 127 bpd (approximately 18 per cent above the company’s unrisked tier one type well).

Capital budget update In response to the current commodity price environment, Spartan has reduced its 2015 capital budget to $85 million from an initial budget of $105 million.

Spartan said the budget continues to focus on openhole Frobisher wells which deliver attractive returns at current prices, while the company will also continue to advance its Midale and Viking plays.

Some Crowns are exempt from AIT provisions that otherwise require procurements to be open to businesses in all Canadian provinces and territories.

The exempt Crowns include SaskEnergy, Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation, Saskatchewan Government Insurance; Saskatchewan Opportunities Corporation; SaskPower; SaskTel, and the Saskatchewan Transportation Company.

These seven Crowns, which continue to be subject to the NWPTA, will primarily source from NWPTA provinces and

from the rest of Canada and globally as warranted.

This new approach fulfills a commitment made in the Priority Saskatchewan Procurement Transformation Action Plan, which was announced in March 2015.

“We are committed to ensuring our Crown corporations comply with trade agreements and recognize there is room within those agreements for Crowns to source regional solutions,” SaskBuilds Minister Gordon Wyant said.

“Our government is very pleased to be moving forward with implementing the Procurement Transformation action plan and continuing to

identify opportunities to improve procurement practices that create a level playing field for Saskatchewan businesses.”

“This is an important step forward,” Saskatchewan Construction Association president Mark Cooper said. “The Saskatchewan Construction Association applauds the provincial leadership in tackling procurement transformation to ensure Saskatchewan businesses are treated fairly.”

Priority Saskatchewan was established in June 2014 to identify opportunities to level the procurement playing field for Saskatchewan businesses. As part

of this mandate, Priority Saskatchewan researched international best practices and led a review of government and Crown sector procurement practices.

The team also led a comprehensive consultation with industry and the broader public sector to develop the action plan. The 13-point action plan is based on industry and stakeholder feedback.

Priority Saskatchewan is consulting with industry and stakeholders on the balance of the action plan’s initiatives. Implementation of the action plan is a priority for government and is expected to be largely complete in 2016.

Alida housing members announced Glenda Nielsen has been appointed as the chair of the Alida Housing Authority’s board of directors.

Other members of the board of directors are Marcia Gervais, Margaret Peet and Brenda Junk. There is one vacant position.

The Alida Housing Authority is a communitybased organization that

provides daily management of four housing units constructed and operated under the terms of a federal, provincial and municipal cost-sharing agreement.

People interested in volunteering to serve on the board of directors for the Alida Housing Authority are encouraged to contact Alida Mayor James

Boettcher. A local nominating committee recommends board members.

Social Services Minister Donna Harpauer paid tribute to the volunteers who manage the social housing projects in their community.

“This local hands-on approach ensures that the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation responds ef-

fectively to the needs of each community,” Harpauer said.

Saskatchewan has a network of 260 housing authorities and more than 1,400 volunteer members who assist with management of housing units throughout the province for seniors, low-income families and persons with disabilities.

The Government of Saskatchewan is once again offering the Community Rink Affordability Grant to communi-

ties across the province.

The Government of Saskatchewan is committing $1.7 million to the grant program in 2015. Over

the past three years, the program has awarded $4.8 million supporting the operations of 1,941 recreational ice surfaces all over Saskatchewan.

The grant helps support operations and minor capital upgrades.

“The ice rinks across our province serve many residents as hubs for physical activity and community involvement,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Mark Docherty said.

“The Community Rink Affordability Grant contributes to the maintenance and operation of our rinks so that citizens of all ages may enjoy skating, curling and playing hockey. Our winters don’t seem

as long when we step out on the ice and participate in the activities we enjoy.”

The Community Rink Affordability Grant provides funding to Saskatchewan’s community-owned indoor skating and curling rinks. Communities, schools, non-profits and First Nations are eligible to apply to the program.

Applications are being accepted until December 15. Successful applicants receive a grant of $2,500 per indoor ice surface.

The Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (SPRA) has administered and delivered the program since its inception and will do so again in 2015.

“SPRA is proud to partner with the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport to administer the Community Rink Affordability Grant again in 2015,” Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association president Mike Powell said. “We receive a significant amount of positive feedback from communities across Saskatchewan who are pleased to receive grant support from our government. This grant aids in the upkeep and maintenance of our rinks - creating quality ice surfaces and facilities.”

Communities that wish to register for the grant can complete the online form found on the Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association’s website.

Every year the Estevan Motor Speedway closes out its season by hosting an Enduro race.

This is where people take old cars, knock the windows out of them, move the gas tank and the battery to a safe place and then race each other for 150 laps or an hour and a half, whichever comes first. After driving in this race and helping officiate it, I have discovered that there are two basic approaches to this event.

First there are the really aggressive drivers. Their goal is to go as fast as they can and lead every lap. They are all over the track and they run into as many other cars as possible. Their aggressive attitude makes them fun to watch because they are on a mission.

Then there is another group of cars that just circle around the bottom of the track and try to stay out of

Local horse rider empowers girls A local equestrian is trying to empower girls and put a stop to bullying through her Riding Breeds Strong Girls campaign.

Charlotte Andrist, 12, a member of the Oxbow based Borderline Riding Club, is using the message of ‘if you can control your horse, and be a strong girl in the riding arena, then you can stand up to bullies in the rest of your daily life’ to help promote anti-bullying. She is also using the theme for her nomination bid to become the 2015 Saskatchewan Riding Club Association (SRCA) Provincial Finals Queen this weekend at the finals show in Moose Jaw.

As part of her bid to become SRCA Queen, Charlotte came up with the anti-bullying theme

by incorporating the message she has been taught in school into her everyday life. She has been trying to

secure sponsorships among the local business community and she will also give a speech to SRCA judges on Saturday night as part of the bid process. Charlotte will also be judged on her performance in the weekend competition events of Western riding and gymkhana.

“Western is the pleasure class, which is the walk, trot and lope,” said Charlotte. “Then horsemanship is another western class and it’s basically doing a pattern. Gymkhana, the racing, is going around the barrels as fast as you can go and the poles is the same thing, going through the poles and back as fast as you can go. Then quads are just the pattern.”

CanElson Drilling Estevan Bruins head coach and general manager Chris Lewgood said selecting a captain for this season was a difficult decision.

“We have guys who were in the conversation for captain who didn’t even get a letter this year,” said Lewgood.

But in the end, they went with Keegan Allison, a talented, 20-year-old forward from Saskatoon who has impressed with his offensive abilities, and his willingness to battle in

the corners and drive to the front of the net despite his 5-foot-10 frame.

Allison was named captain on September 17 – the same day as the Bruins season opener. Lewgood said Allison was ultimately chosen because of his work ethic.

“His work ethic is exceptional, and I think that’s the key to our success this year,” said Lewgood. “We have the talent, and if we work hard, then we’re going to have success.”

But Allison has also

impressed the Bruins’ staff with his humility. Lewgood noted Allison was stunned to find out he would be the captain.

“He’s a leader and he doesn’t even realize it,” said Lewgood. “He’s one of these guys who, when he was named captain, his jaw just about hit the floor.

Keegan Allison is one of the most humble guys you could meet.”

Allison said he knew there was a chance he could wear the “C” this year, after he finished last season

as an alternate, and after last year’s captain, Nolan Nicholas, opted to play in the United States Hockey League for his final year of junior hockey.

“There are six or seven guys on this team that could have been in the exact same position that I am,” said Allison.

Those players would include the team’s alternate captains: his longtime linemate Lynnden Pastachak; and defencemen Zach Douglas, Josh Rieger and Charles Man-

Charlotte said the antibullying emblem of pink will be well represented in her bid for SRCA Queen at this weekend’s provincial finals as her club members will get together at the event to decorate the Borderline Riding Club stall in the colour. She said most competitors for Queen or King don’t really have a theme, but this cause is important to her and delivers an important message.

“I just want to stop bullying,” she said. “I guess it’s a good opportunity to do it and all these people (at the finals) are going to be looking at it.”

This will be Charlotte’s third year qualifying for the SRCA provincial finals and her first year compet-

ing for Queen. Her best result came last year when she finished first in the Trail class.

To get ready for the competition, Charlotte said she has been practicing all summer as well as spending time with her horse and going to shows such as the Estevan Light Horse Show earlier this month. She said the competitors at provincials are all very good, but her fingers are crossed that the hard work she’s put in will enable her to do well in the events and win the nomination for SRCA Provincial Finals Queen.

“There are a lot of good people there,” said Charlotte about her chances, “so you can never really tell.”

Allison scored the team’s first goal of the season in a 5-2 road victory over

Melville on Sept. 17. And he had two assists as the Black and Gold defeated Melville 6-4 in the Bruins’ home opener the following night.

“I love our offence, especially compared to last year,” said Allison. “I wouldn’t get ahead of ourselves, but hopefully we can keep it up for the whole year.”

The Bruins swept the Mills in the annual homeand-home series to start the season for the first time since 2010.
