Good use of a long weekend

(L-R) Elle Meyers, Logan Hunt and Damon Hunt were among the many young people who flocked to the Westview hill for some tobogganing, inner tub sliding and other activities on February 16. Boundary Dam project is exceeding expectations By David Willberg SaskPower has released its preliminary performance numbers for the retrofitted Unit 3 at the Boundary Dam Power Station, and they show that the unit is performing better than expected. Unit 3 is producing more power than anticipated. The purity of the carbon dioxide (CO2) is not only better

than projected, but as close to perfect as possible. And it’s on target to meet standards for the carbon emissions that will be emitted into the atmosphere. The numbers were released on February 11, and paint a picture of the success of Unit 3 for its first four months of operation. “I am quite surprised, in a nice way,” said SaskPower president of carbon capture

and storage initiatives Mike Monea. “Usually with these projects, the surprises aren’t always pleasant.” Unit 3 was expected to generate 110 megawatts of power, but it is actually supplying 120 megawatts. The purity of the CO2 was to be 95.5 per cent, but is at 99.9999 per cent, which Monea said is likely the biggest surprise of all. “Originally we looked

at 96 per cent pure CO2, which would be good for the oilfields,” said Monea. In future plants that SaskPower designs, Monea said the Crown corporation might be able to use the CO2 purity to target additional, higher value markets. The plant has the capacity to capture up to one million tonnes of CO2 in 2015 and is on track to meet that goal. Approximately

135,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) have been captured since the plant officially launched on October 2, 2014. The project is going through some equipment issues, but Monea said that’s “quite normal” when starting up a plant that is the first of its kind in the world. “We just have to get some history, which is happening, and it will be working quite

nicely,” said Monea. The capture island has thousands of components that have never been designed to work together like they are at Boundary Dam. Monea said the handoffs, from one piece of equipment to the next, has been efficiently. “Nobody has ever built this before, so the designs – Continued on Page 2 ►
