Doug Third recognized for his What is to happen extraordinary service to the community with ECS?

Don Kindopp believes that Doug Third has been one of Estevan’s fine citizens over the years, and is deserving of all sorts of accolades, even if Doug doesn’t want the spotlight.

A long-time resident of the Estevan area, Doug was saluted to his involvement in many aspects of the community during a ceremony on Tuesday afternoon at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

A large crowd gathered in the hospital’s foyer area for the ceremony, which saw the dedication of the Doug Third Education Centre and the unveilling of a plaque that pays tribute to his service. Appropriately, the ceremony came on Doug’s 91st birthday.

Even though the couple was unable to attend the dedication, the assembled crowd still sang happy birthday to him.

Doug and Alice Third’s son Ian and their daughters Margo Holinaty and Melissa Tholl were in attendance.

Doug came to Estevan in 1949 to be the first principal at Hillside School, a role he would hold until 1980. Then he became an assistant superintendent at the Estevan Rural School Division.

He also became a lay minister who performed more than 1,000 prayer services, graveside services and funeral services, helping out many more people in the community.

tion and indeed reverence and love of him by all who know him,” said Kindopp.

Kindopp praised Doug for demonstrating a caring and compassionate attitude his entire life.

“He cares about who you are and who you will become.

He cares whether you as a teacher, a student or a parent are equipped with the skills you will need to succeed in life.”

Kindopp pointed out Doug taught the members of his wife Lynn’s family. All of them went on to university and enjoyed success in their chosen careers.

“For members of one family whose parents weren’t educated beyond the 10th grade, this is marvellous,” said Kindopp, who believes students succeeded because of Doug’s love of learning.

Many of those in attendance were former teachers who taught with Doug or students who benefitted from his teaching.

Other speakers included St. Joseph’s Hospital CEO Greg Hoffort, Estevan Mayor Roy Ludwig and Hall Funeral Services owner Dustin Hall.

But the biggest tribute came from Doug’s son Ian, who generated lots of laughs and tears as he shared memories about his father.

He told the crowd his parents loved Estevan. They stayed within the 40-kilometre radius of the city. And they were proud of their homes on George Street, Henry Street and Petterson Drive.

Doug remains a humble and honest man who doesn’t want lots said about him, but Ian believes his father is proud

that he has left a legacy on the community.

“I think he was born with one thing in mind, and that was the dedication to his fellow man. Some of you are here because of the way he was with you,” said Ian. People would show up unannounced at the Thirds’ home looking for guidance or counselling, because they knew he was not only compassionate and a great listener, but also someone who would give a direct and honest answer.

Often a new priest assigned to St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church would come to their home.

The South East Cornerstone Public School Division’s (SECPSD) board of education invited the public and local organizations to join them for a conversation about the future of the Estevan Comprehensive School (ECS) on Tuesday night.

About 50 people attended the community event. It started with an updated on the current condition of the school that was built in 1968 and, as many other schools in the area that were put up around the same time, has started showing deterioration. The division is exploring its options.

A complete building assessment was done back in 2017, and the overlying theme was the building is beyond its expected life and upgrades are recommended.

The school was maintained through the years with a lot of money being invested into roof renovations, which are slated to be finished in 2021, as well as into some other fixings and updates. But there is a lot more work required.

“The original steam boiler remains in operation, however, the condensate lines are corroding, therefore a new heating, ventilation and air conditioning system will be required within the next five years at an estimated cost of $7M (million),” the presentation said.

Electrical systems are aged as well and eventually will need a complete upgrade, which will cost approximately $ 2.5 M.

There are some conditions of movements that result in uneven floors and cracked walls, but there is no obvious evidence that life safety issue currently exists. However, some exploratory work is planned to be done to ensure the conditions of the building.

The school was designed to accommodate up to 1,200 students, but it has never been filled to capacity. For a number of years, the additional space was used for the Estevan campus of the Southeast College, but after they finished their own building the extra room has not been fully utilized.

This year ECS operates at 51 per cent of its capacity with 729 students enrolled and is not projected to be over 52 per cent (with most years being at 47-48 per cent) of its capacity before 2032.

But with not a very high level of involvement, the school offers a big variety of courses for Grades 9-12. “(There are) different opportunities … here for students, very well rounded program whether the students are academically profound in terms of advanced placement or whether taking trades and shops classes, or whether they are excelling in sports, whether they are excelling in the arts, band, etc., all of these opportunities are here. That’s because this building affords these opportunities,” said the director of education for the school division Lynn Little.

Book documented all of Doug Third’s funerals « A1 were ready to do a proper mass,” said Ian. When the house sold on Petterson Drive, it was a bittersweet time, because his parents didn’t have to worry about the house any longer, but they also knew they were leaving Estevan.

While Ian was cleaning out the home, he found a plastic bag that contained a speech his father gave at the local Remembrance Day service that reflected his public speaking and writing skills.

“He would capture you with his movement of his eyes, and he would draw you in as he spoke so that you would think he was talking directly and only to you,” said Ian.

And then he found his father’s book on delivering a Christian funeral that is a guide to helping laymen perform services. That book contained what made his father so popular as a lay person.

“Within the covers … throughout the pages stuck in with masking tape is every single name of every single service that he ever did,” Ian said to murmurs from the crowd.

The last entry simply read “1,003,” marking the last of more than 1,000 services.

Doug’s first funeral was in 1990.

Estevan area, from the richest to the poorest. And they ranged from a 106-year-old person to a one-day-old baby.

“Who amongst us would have that dedication to his fellow man? Who amongst us would have done 1,003

funerals, let alone made sure they were in this book?”

And each of those 1,003 services was different for each person.

Following the plaque unveiling, Ian third presented the book to Hall so that it can be placed somewhere in Hall Funeral Service.

Hoffort pointed out that it was Guy Chicoine and Hall who came forward with the idea of doing something to recognize Doug, when Chicoine became aware that Doug had conducted his last funeral service. They took up an offering and approached the hospital to see if there was a way to recognize him.

Third pointed out his father still keeps tabs on what’s happening in Estevan by reading the Estevan Mercury on a weekly basis.

Doug is a life member of the Rotary Canadian Legion’s Estevan branch, received a Queen Elizabeth Medal, the Canadian Centennial Medal and the Canadian Confederation Medal. His name is attached to the Doug Third Hall in Woodlawn Regional Park; the building used to be the Hillside School gymnasium.

The education centre used to be the hospital’s library, and it will be used for the hospital’s longitudinal integrated clerkship student program.

Issues discussed by groups at ECS meeting « A1 array of practical and applied arts (PAA), trades/ shops learning spaces and opportunities. Little explained that to build a new school, the province nowadays provides funding for high schools, which generally will have one or two such opportunities.

Last summer, the SECPSD conducted some research and thought-exchange on the possibilities for the ECS, which was followed by over 3,000 ratings.

“We asked a wide-open question, ‘What is it that you value the most about the education provided by your

school?’ … We heard from the ECS folks (that) their highest rating quote was ‘maintaining ECS is vital, maintaining and updating facility is as important as the classes that are offered here.’”

The parents of elementary school students shared similar views, outlining the importance of the trades and arts learning opportunities. However, with the current enrolment, it’s almost impossible to keep the offered variety in the future.

During the presentation, Little also went over the assessment guide for receiving

capital funding to outline what the government is looking at when prioritizing the projects.

The final conclusions were, “We know how capital funding is awarded. We know ECS requires substantial work, expense in the near future and is nearing the end of its useful lifespan without a major capital investment. We know the projected enrollments. We know the current and future capacity of ECS doesn’t meet a level where we would be successful in receiving capital funding for renewal without substantially impacting course offerings.

We know that if we apply for

and build a new structure we will not have the breadth of PAA/Shops/Trades. Typically one space. We know there are many schools in the province requiring infrastructure support. The layout of ECS would be challenging to decommission space – if not impossible.”

After summarizing the current condition, situation and existing problems, Little offered those present at the

meeting to get into groups to discuss the following questions that will help the ECS move forward.

1. What is the appetite for reducing course offerings via alternations of the facility (PAA)? Or a new build?

2. What is the appetite to consider increasing capacity – Grade 7-12 or 6-12 or other?

Can SECPD explore opportunities for partnership at a renewed ECS? The results of the community discussion will be assessed and the conversation is expected to continue in November.

“The board is going to take all of this information, go and sit down, synthesize it and then determine where we will go from here based on what we’ve heard from the community this evening. So we’ve got this information, plus thought-exchange that we did last year, plus the information we shared regarding the facility. So boiling that all together and then making a decision,” said Little.

It is too early to forecast which way it will go, but Little noted that as she was going around during the discussion time there were a lot of talks about potential partnerships and community partnerships.

Community supports the Day of Caring People from the Estevan area once again showed their support for those in need of assistance through the United Way Estevan’s Day of Caring on Wednesday.

This year’s event had about 185 volunteers who worked to fill 54 projects of all kinds. It proved to be a perfect day as well, thanks to the warm, sunny and calm day in the southeast region.

“We have a great variety of projects today,” said Wendy Gustafson, the Day of Caring committee chair.

“We’ve got lots of people with indoor work.”

Oven cleaning seemed to be a popular task for the Day of Caring beneficiaries this year. Gustafson pointed out it can be a difficult job for a senior citizen. Volun-

teers also completed lots of lawn raking, hedge trimming, eavestrough cleaning, window washing and flower planting.

And for the first time, somebody asked for help to change a tire on a camper.

Numerous organizations will also benefit from the Day of Caring projects, including Creighton Lodge, the Estevan Regional Nursing Home, St. Joseph’s Hospital long-term care, the Estevan Bible Camp, the Souris Valley Theatre, the Estevan Humane Society and many more.

“We have lots of projects that are big ones,” said Gustafson.

But most of the projects could be found at the homes of local residents. Ban-

ners were set up in front of homes to indicate that they would benefit from the Day of Caring.

“It’s especially nice with the seniors, because it’s not just a time to help them, but they look forward to having the people come, and it’s a good social time for them, too,” said Gustafson.

A barbecue lunch was served at the Estevan Alliance Church that attracted a large crowd. A silver collection was taken to help offset the costs of the lunch. The barbecue used to run from noon to 1 p.m., but due to the number of people who attend, it begins at 11:30 a.m., giving people more time to get through the lineup.

Once the barbecue wrapped up, volunteers headed out to their afternoon projects.

The number of projects for the Day of Caring continues to grow each year, she said. Many of them are on the project list each year, but some received support for the first time. She believes it’s a reflection of the growing awareness of the Day of Caring.

“People realize that there is help available, and so I think that people start looking forward to May, and knowing that we’re going to be doing our Day of Caring, so it’s pretty neat that people just start making plans for the Day of Caring,” said Gustafson.

United Way Estevan sets its goal for 2019 The United Way Estevan has established a goal of $340,000 for its 2019 telethon, which will take place on Oct. 18 and 19.

The goal was finalized during the United Way’s board meeting May 15. It marks an increase of $5,000 from the previous year.

Becca Foord, who is this year’s board president, said the United Way has an allocations committee that gets together each spring before the goal is established.

“We go through what we spent in the last couple

of years, we go through our budgets over the past few years, we take an estimate of what our overhead costs will be for the year, and as most of the community knows, we try to keep that as low as we can,” said Foord.

Then they go through the applications for funding sent in by their 15 member agencies.

“If need be, we set up a meeting with them to talk about their package and what their plans are for the year. We try to keep a good working relationship with

them to see what they need, and based on what we can raise,” said Foord.

After going through their requests, the United Way comes up with their goal. The bulk of the money they raise each year goes to the 15 member agencies, two community projects and their community impact fund.

Among the initiatives supported by the community impact fund are two $500 scholarships for graduating students at the Estevan Comprehensive School. The

top criteria were community involvement and volunteerism.

“The United Way is very big on volunteering, and we take pride in the fact that we have a lot of good volunteers, so we’d like to recognize the young people in our community who are also taking the time to volunteer out of their social lives and their school work.”

This year’s recipients are Leighton Mus and Sarah Leverton.

Foord noted that each president usually has a goal

in mind for how much they want to raise. Her number was lower than the goal that was established, but the board decided that since they have raised at least $350,000 each of the last three years, they could have a higher goal than in 2018.

“I know we’re in a little bit of a tough economic situation right now, but we figured you know what?

Last year was $335,000, so let’s challenge the community for $5,000 more this year.”

Foord is confident the United Way will reach that goal, because the community has supported the organization every year. People see the value of the member agencies, and they appreciate all of the agencies’ hard work.

The United Way’s theme for this year is Give Where you Live, which reflects the growing desire for people to shop local. It’s an appropriate theme, Foord said, because the money that’s donated during the telethon stays in the community.

Do they want us to shift towards a pseudoprohibition era, in which it’s incredibly difficult to purchase a drink, but alcohol is still legal? Do they want to limit the options that we have available to us?

Sure, laws are changing gradually to create more freedom and opportunity, but you wonder if the people who write our liquor laws want a return to the days when men and women had to go to separate bars.

The most recent goofy and archaic law to be scrapped in Saskatchewan is the one that calls for limits on the amount of alcohol that can be transported across provincial boundaries for personal use. Yes, there was still a law in place.

The law was ridiculous. And it was unenforceable. We didn’t have patrols set up at the Saskatchewan-Manitoba border, looking for people who were bringing a couple of cases of beer across the provincial boundary.

If the RCMP pulled somebody over for speeding near Gainsborough, they weren’t going to search the vehicle to see if there was a couple of cases of beer in the trunk. The police are busy enough as it is; they have real crimes to worry about.

And the courts have more pressing issues to deal with than whether someone was caught importing beer across provincial lines.

You have to wonder if anyone was actually charged with this offence in this century.

If you look at the laws of any province or jurisdiction, you’ll likely find a few laughers.

Crimes that aren’t actually crimes, and should be stricken from the laws. Maybe the government doesn’t want them to come to light because they know it would be embarrassing.

We’d also hope that we’re the only province with this law that should be a punch line, but we’re not. Other provinces still have this law, and it’s absurd.

In a capitalist society where drinking in moderation is encouraged, you have to wonder why this law was still in place.

Maybe there are concerns that by repealing this law, you’re going to encourage more people to drive while impaired. That’s not the case. It’s tragic that Saskatchewan has the highest impaired driving rates in the country. And we should always be looking at ways to deter and punish impaired driving, rather than encourage it.

But it’s unlikely that many impaired driving collisions and charges were caused by people who were smuggling beer across provincial lines.

And we aren’t seeing a change in the laws for bringing alcohol in from the U.S. So if you were hoping to bring in greater quantities of cheap, watery beer from a U.S. convenience store, you’ll be disappointed.

Saskatchewan has some great breweries, wineries and distilleries. Anyone who has been to Savour the Southeast can attest to that. You can enjoy a great product made in Saskatchewan, by Saskatchewan people and using Saskatchewan ingredients, and give the economy a boost, too.

But there are some great products being created elsewhere in the country, too, and if you want to bring something home with you that was made in southwest Manitoba, well, why shouldn’t you?

At the same time, if someone from Calgary wants to bring a great Saskatchewan beer home with them, why shouldn’t they?

We need firm laws when it comes to all aspects of alcohol, but they need to be enforceable and they have to be modern. They can’t leave you wondering if they were created for 1959 instead of 2019.

Catastrophe at the Macoun Hotel Six weeks after purchasing the hotel at Macoun and getting his family settled there, Carl Hochhaus left town to see to matters on his homestead in Alberta.

He could never have imagined that when he returned home, he would find his hotel a smouldering mass of debris covering the remains of many dead, including his wife Gertrude and 23-year-old daughter Emma.

On April 20, 1914, one of the most tragic hotel fires in Saskatchewan’s history occurred at Macoun.

Eleven people (some accounts say thirteen) lost their lives as a result of the disaster and many more were injured, including three Hochhaus children.

At lunchtime on that fateful day, 30 people were inside the Macoun Hotel.

Some were Hochhaus family members, some were staff members, others were hotel guests. Many were sitting down for lunch, and the hotel dining room was full.

James Towey, a 10-yearold witness of the explosion, provides his account of the event in Plowshares to Pumpjacks: R.M. of Cymri: Macoun, Midale, Halbrite, (1984). Shortly after noon, Towey recounts, Carl Hochhaus, Jr. smelled gas and decided to go down to the basement to investigate the gas light plant.

“He had a lighted cigar in his mouth as he descended the stairs and opened the door to the basement,” Towey writes. “Immediately there was an explosion which lifted the entire structure approximately

with only a few bruises, singed hair and eyebrows.

Everyone caught in the conflagration was injured, perished in the fire or died later as a result of their injuries.

The hotel’s dining room was located directly above an acetylene light plant in the basement. The explosion caused the entire dining room to collapse into the cellar below. Wreckage from the walls and floors above fell on top of the diners and then caught fire.

Jeers to those who want to see coal mining stopped in Canada. It has played a big role in producing power, and it’s still the most reliable option out there.

those killed in the Macoun hotel explosion were: four telephone workers, Daniel Egan (Moose Jaw), Harold George Clark (Estevan), Thomas Drake (Manitoba), and Peter Joyner (Estevan); Joseph E. Grant, a carpenter (Macoun); James Dunger, a grain buyer (Manitoba); and three members of the hotel staff, Clifford VanDer, hotel clerk, Ferdinand Schmidt, hotel bartender, and Stella Peterson, the hotel cook who died in Winnipeg General Hospital on June 16th after weeks of suffering.

The most talked about story of the event was, according to the Regina Leader-Post, the “miraculous escape” of Hochhaus’ youngest son, Bernard. The eight-year-old was playing with his dog, a collie named Bismarck, in the lobby of the hotel when the explo-

Most remains were charred beyond recognition.

Small acetylene gas plants were the best lighting option in Saskatchewan in places where electric light was not yet available. After the Macoun disaster, there were calls for laws requiring that gas plants be housed in separate buildings a safe distance away from inhabited buildings.

“One acetylene gas plant to one frame hotel equals one death trap,” the Saskatoon Daily Star stated on April 24. The arrival of electricity in villages and towns during the 1920s, however, spelled the end of gas lighting in the province.

Conference a big event for oil and gas sector Saskatchewan hosted one of North America’s premier oil and gas trade shows and networking events this week.

Representatives from diverse areas of the petroleum industry attended the 27th Williston Basin Petroleum Conference in Regina.

The conference’s focus was the significant oil-producing region that encompasses southern Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Montana, and North and South Dakota, which represents billions of dollars in combined economic activity.

The event, which takes place on an alternating basis between Regina and Bismarck, N.D., is hosted by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Energy and Resources and the Petroleum Technology Research Centre.

“The Williston Basin is a major component of Saskatchewan’s employment, innovation and economic prosperity,” Energy and Resources Minister Bronwyn Eyre said. “Resource-based activity and investment are very important to our province. According to the 2018 Scotiabank Playbook, Saskatchewan had six of the

top 20 oil and gas plays for return on investment, and the highest ranking play was Frobisher in the Williston Basin area.”

The theme of this year’s conference, Saskatchewan Now, profiled opportunities for investment in the province. On the agenda were business and technical sessions, including panel discussions focused on investment strategies, enhanced oil recovery, pipeline integrity and innovations in heavy, light and tight oil.

Saskatchewan produced

almost 500,000 barrels of oil per day in 2018, ranking as the sixth-largest onshore oil-producing jurisdiction in North America. Competitive advantages have helped to attract $4.2 billion in private investment in Saskatchewan’s oil industry in 2017 and $4.5 billion in 2018. Combined, the province’s mining, and oil and gas industries generated a combined real GDP of more than $22 billion in 2018, accounting for more than 27 per cent of Saskatchewan’s total 2018 real GDP by industry.

St. Mary’s School’s Grade 4 students found new friends at the Estevan Regional Nursing Home (ERNH). The project developed by two entities allowed children to meet and get to know ERNH residents, who quickly became their Grand Buddies, as the title of the project suggests.

The first visit to the ERNH was to ask questions of all the staff and residents about some of the downfalls people face in such an old building.

“The very first visit, they just came around they got a tour of the facility. We got to show them how small the residents’ rooms are, how they got a curtain around their toilet, that’s their bathroom,” said ERNH recreation co-ordinator Susan Murphy.

She noted that some children were “really shocked” and “mortified” with the conditions older people have to live

in at the ERNH. So after their visit, the students took back their thoughts and answers and wrote letters to the government to help with the ERNH’s plea for a new nursing home.

And further down the road, as students kept coming to visit, their friendships were growing.

“They’ve been coming since the end of March. They’ve played Bingo, they’ve done crafts, they’ve done an auction,” explained Murphy. “But the main goal for us was to match two students per resident and break the ice with Bingo-playing and things like that.”

When students first came in they were pretty overwhelmed and a bit scared.

“But a lot of them just took a shining to each other,” said Murphy.

It took some time and adjustments to build relationships.

Step by step students learned bits and pieces about their older friends, while seniors got used to having their new little and full of energy friends around.

“Now they (students) come in, they know their names, they know their rooms, they can go get them and bring them to a program.”

The residents also got attached to their younger buddies.

“The residents, they do love it. Some that we’ve never expected (to get interested in participating in the project) they popped up (and got bonded with students).”

Last Friday students came to the ERNH to interview their Grand Buddies to collect more data for the final stage of the project.

“They are interviewing them to learn about where they lived, how they like it here, about their past history,” said Murphy.

Students had guide lists with questions to ask, but quite often they would get off topic and just share their own stories, as seniors would tell them a little bit more about their life paths.

“It’s interesting to listen to old people tell their stories,” said Grade 4 Chowsey Fang, whose Grand Buddy was Leona Selk.

“I learned that she (Leona) has seven kids. I learned that she was born on November 2, 1924.”

Fang, who has one sister and one brother, continued her interview asking if it was hard to raise seven children and other questions.

Estevan Impact Early Childhood Fair taught about bugs

The Hillcrest School gymnasium was full of bugs and little children on Tuesday morning. Thankfully, the bugs weren’t real, but the kids and their parents were. They came to the school to participate in teh Estevan Impact Early Childhood Fair.

“It’s for children who are three turning four (born in 2015). It actually runs in a lot of smaller communities around the southeast just to have parents come out and engage in activities their child of that age should be able to do,” explained Estevan Family Resource Centre director Colleen Macmillan, who has been spearheading the event for Estevan and area for about 15 years.

On average there are usually about 75 children of the designated age going through the Estevan fair.

This year they were learning about insects through participating in various games and activities.

“A lot of the activities involve different things. There is problem-solving, there are fine motor skill activities, there are gross skill activities, there are language and literacy activities.

We try to encompass all areas of learning within the fair. And you don’t necessarily know that you are learning about math,” said Macmillan.

The fair also connects parents with different resources that their children might be eligible for.

“We have pre-kindergarten programs from the both South East Cornerstone School Division and the Holy Family School Division. Both ECIP (Early Childhood Intervention Programs) are here doing activities for families,” noted Macmillan.

For the first time, the Special Olympics Saskatchewan had their table at the fair.

“There is a new Special Olympics program for younger children that just started,” said Macmillan.

Chris Hamilton was at the fair, providing information to parents and giving souvenirs to children.

The Souris Valley Museum was present as well, doing activities and talking about their summer programs.

Despite the general popularity of the event in Estevan from year to year, it’s often a question if it will make it to the Energy City.

“Many communities involved with the fair are small and don’t have a lot of resources, so the fair tends to get all

of these little locations. They get to hit this first. This year we didn’t know if we would have the Impact in Estevan, because the grant only covers that much. And … there are so many small communities that need it more than we do because Estevan has a lot of free resources for families,” explained Macmillan.

Once they got through all those events and still had a part of the grant money left, they could put the Estevan fair together. And once again it was a success.

Former southeast Saskatchewan resident releases new book to help people going through a tough time

Denise Anderson hopes sharing her experiences about divorce in a small town can help people enduring a similar situation.

Anderson, a former Carlyle resident who now lives in Regina and works as a life coach, has released Small Town Divorce: A Road Map through Devastation, Despair and Drama.

The book will be available for download through amazon.ca on June 5.

A hard-copy version of her story will be available a short time after its release on Amazon. The publisher has yet to be determined.

“I just felt that by sharing my story and my experiences, I can help other people navigate their own way through a divorce,” said Anderson.

Going through a divorce is a challenging time, but it’s made even more difficult when it happens in a smaller community where everybody knows everybody and their personal situation.

“I just thought it was an important factor to talk about, and to address that dynamic when you’re going through a divorce,” said Anderson.

At times people going through a divorce can feel like a fish out of water and gasping for air, she said, and they want clarity in times of uncertainty.

“The book is like a road map, kind of helping people to navigate their way down that road of divorce, whether they’re in the throes of it now or even being out of it for a little while, I find that people are still having a difficult time dealing with the emotional roller coaster that comes with going through a divorce.”

While the book talks about living in a small town when a marriage is falling apart, it can be directed to anyone experiencing a divorce. Someone might live in a big city, but they will still be part of a small community, such as a suburb, an apartment building or a sports team.

Anderson also draws on the experiences of other people she has encountered over the past 12 years when writing the book.

their experiences as well, and how they were able to work through that process,” she said.

When people read the book, she wants them to know that it will get better.

“Going through a challenging experience like this can be overwhelming, so I would hope they would know there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, and it’s not always going to be like

this,” she said. “Reaching out for that extra support or tools or techniques to help navigate their way through it would actually create more grace and ease through their experience.”

Anderson started working on the book early this year.

Her father had been diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer, and in the final period of his life, Anderson asked him if there was anything he hadn’t done.

He wished he had written a book.

“I made a promise to him that I would write at least one book before I passed away, or I was on my death bed,” she said.

As for the reading in Bienfait, Anderson said it was a good event despite only a handful of people turning out.

But she is always willing to talk about her experiences no matter the size of the audience.

A friend in the Bienfait area saw on Facebook that Anderson was releasing a book and was willing to participate in author readings to talk about her experiences.

Similar events have been held in Montmartre on Mother’s Day, and she has another reading booked for Regina on June 26.

Anderson has already started working on a follow-up book for Small Town Divorce.

She doesn’t know if it will materialize as quickly as her debut

release, but it won’t be too long before it is out.

And she’s also willing to

Lampman students celebrate their grad May 24 was a day to remember for the Grade 12 students at Lampman School who celebrated their graduation ceremony.

Shaelynne Carson, who is an educational assistant at the school, described it as a very nice and well-attended ceremony.

The theme was “The Rest is still Unwritten.”

Activities started with a group photo of the 21 graduates that was taken at the Lampman branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. Rain earlier in the day meant they had to have the photo indoors instead of the traditional outdoor setting.

town’s curling rink. The meal was prepared by Weir’s Catering out of Manor.

After supper the students

headed to the gymnasium, which was packed for the festivities. The ceremony started at 7 p.m. and wrapped up

about three hours later.

The event featured the usual assortment of speeches and tributes, such as the rec-

ognition of the staff and the parents, and the responses.

Scholarships were handed out to the students.

The guest speaker was Lucas Bartsch, who is a former teacher at the school.

“He started out extremely humourously. As a parent … he lightened the seriousness of ‘Oh my gosh, my daughter is graduating’ or ‘My son is graduating,’” said Carson.

But he also told the graduates that life isn’t always going to happen as they want it, and failure will keep them humble.

“At the end, he went back to humourous and lightening the mood again.”

MacKenzie Carson was the guest speaker. She told the

crowd they shaped each other’s lives because many of them spent the last 12 years together.

“She also discussed that in life, compared to school, there are no rewrites in different things throughout life, and you take what you get,” said Shaelynne Carson.

The address was also used to discuss funny moments that stood out, and to encourage the grads in the careers they will venture into.

Both speeches also touched on the grad class theme.

After the diplomas were presented there was the grande marche, when the graduates walked across the stage with their escorts and accepted a rose.

Benson Beef 4-H Club busy with activities Submitted by Meghan Dukart The Benson Beef 4-H Club has had a busy few months.

In March, we hosted the district 4-H speeches at the Days Inn’s Taylorton Room.

We also had our steak fundraiser at the Beefeater Restaurant. Thank you to the Beef ’s staff and all of our supporters who came out.

Kail and Tucker Hilstrom both gave their speeches at our March meeting. Tucker spoke about his farm, and Kail spoke about his hockey career. We had our monthly show and

tell and Haylie Petterson brought in some feed that her steers eat. Lindsay Mack brought a can of Flare that she will use at our upcoming achievement/regional day. She will use the Flare to groom her steer.

Waylon Petterson is pretty excited to groom his first 4-H steer and brought in different grooming supplies. Ryder Mantei brought in a picture of his steer that he showed in his first year in 2018.

At the end of March, our general leader Brandice Petterson represented District 1 at the Saskatchewan 4-H annual general meeting in

Saskatoon. She had a lot of fun, and brought back some new information for the district.

Our last event in March was the Farmers’ Appreciation Evening. Ellie Hayes did an outstanding job delivering her speech, Girl Power, in front of the large crowd. We want to extend our congratulations to the Marcotte Family for winning the Farm Family of the Year Award.

In April, the Cymri 4-H Club hosted a safety day in Weyburn and three of our members attended: Charlie and Ellie Hayes and Preston Walter. They had so much

fun learning all about farm safety.

At our April meeting we discussed our record books, and some of the leaders brought in their old books.

We discussed what the judge will be looking for in your record book. At the end of the meeting, all the members made posters for a barbecue that we held at the Southern Plains Co-op in May. Keaton Walter said his speech and he spoke on porcupines. Brody Hogg, and Preston and Keaton Walter brought in their show and tell items for the month.

on his first steer to groom.

Preston Walter brought in a fogger. He will use that with the blower when grooming his first steer. Keaton Walter brought in a drill comb. He uses that to shape the hair on his steer.

We kicked May off with our meeting. We discussed the barbecue, our June demo day that will be held at the Hale/Mantei Farm and our achievement day. At the demo day we will discuss showmanship, grooming and judging.

Kail brought in the feed that his steer eats. Tucker brought in his hocus pocus that he will use on steer. This will be first time he will be grooming. Turner brought in his halter that he uses to halter break his steer. Alex brought in her new show halter. She is excited to use it for her first time showing her steer.

The barbecue was held May 11. Thank you to everybody who came out in the wind to support us.

Some of our members went to the highway cleanup with the Rotary Club of Estevan. They helped pick garbage up, and had a dinner at Rotary Park afterwards.

MINING WEEK MAY 26 - JUNE 1, 2019 MPs impressed with local mine operations A few members of Parliament who recently toured energy-related facilities in the Estevan area came away impressed with what they saw, particularly when it came to the mining operations.

Souris-Moose Mountain MP Robert Kitchen brought Conservative Party caucus members Ed Fast, who is the shadow minister for Environment and Climate Change, and John Barlow, the shadow minister for employment, workplace development and labour.

In addition to touring the Westmoreland operations, they visited the Boundary Dam Power Station and its carbon capture and storage (CCS) facility, the nearby Aquistore site that stores carbon dioxide, and the carbon capture test facility at the Shand Power Station.

Finally, they met with the Deep Earth Energy Production Corp. about their work to bring Canada’s first geothermal facility to Estevan.

“We had a great two days talking with the manager at the Westmoreland coal, and

educating these people, my colleagues, on this very aspect,” said Kitchen. “It’s something that I’m very passionate with my colleagues in convincing them about the value of carbon capture, and therefore the value of still utilizing coal,” said Kitchen.

At the mines, they toured the mine site, and despite the rain that day, they saw the area, and the heavy equipment that is used in mining.

Fast and Barlow were impressed with the facilities they saw and the efforts of the people who work at the mines.

They were also impressed by the enormity of the equipment, and how the mine and the power plant workers look to reduce emissions.

When they talked with Beth Hardy from the CCS knowledge centre on the recent feasibility study to retrofit the Shand Power Station with CCS, they were also impressed.

“We actually could have a carbon-neutral plant,” said Kitchen.

hard-working individuals who fill middle-class jobs. They’re trained and knowledgeable in what they do.

“They have the training in the present day to do the skills that they have learned, and to implement them with what they do,” said Kitchen. “They’ve learned how to use that equipment. They’ve done upgrades

as they advance from whatever position they’re doing.

“These are things that we need to continue to recognize.

And these people want to just work. The mining companies are working as hard as they can to try to ensure that.”

Many people he talks to are concerned about the regulations being thrown at them

by the present Liberal government.

“As we move forward, they don’t have the certainty of where they’re going. How are they advertising for filling jobs? How are they ensuring that they are able to do what they need to do when people are scared for where this might lead?”

Kitchen’s son Stephen is a geologist at the mines, and back when he was a chiropractor, many of his patients were people who worked at the mines.

“I will promote the great work that they do in order to provide power for Saskatchewan people. There’s a tremendous benefit for what they do in our community, not only for the work they do at the mine, but they’re always stepping forward,” said Kitchen.

The mines have been invaluable supporters of the United Way Estevan and many other causes in the area.

Kitchen said he has been trying to promote the work of the coal mines and power generation in his riding since he was elected. Coronach, home to the coal-fired Poplar River Power Station, is on the western edge of the riding.

The MP also made a presentation in the House of Commons about CCS and coal on Tuesday afternoon during a debate of reducing emission and bringing down average global temperatures.

first day back on the job.

The mines proved to be the perfect fit for Malaryk. After graduating from the Estevan Comprehensive School when he was 17, Malaryk bounced around to a few different jobs.

He worked mainly in construction, and he helped out with his dad’s farm near Hitchcock.

It was a desire to try something different that steered him towards the mines. It didn’t hurt that they paid very well.

“I worked for three months, and then I was laid off for about a week. And then I got back to work, and ended up running those draglines,” said Malaryk, who was 22 years old when he became a dragline operator.

There would be a bidding process for a vacant position at the mine, whether it be a truck driver or a dragline oiler or operator. They posted the dragline operator role on the company bulletin board,

and anybody who was interested could apply. Seniority is a big factor in the decision.

When Malaryk was laid off after three months, they had a vacancy for a dragline oiler, so they called him a few days after being laid off, because nobody wanted to go in that position. He was brought back as an oiler.

A requirement of the job was to learn how to operate the dragline, so that work wouldn’t be interrupted when the regular operator took a lunch break.

Malaryk pounced at the opportunity to be a dragline operator after one of the operators retired, and he was hired.

“One of my favourite sayings was that working at the mines gives me the opportunity to play with the biggest toys in the sandbox, and the biggest sandbox in the province,” said Malaryk.

ticeship program in 1980, four years after starting at the mines, and eventually earned his journeyman ticket in industrial mechanics. He secured his ticket for the hydraulic crane in 1989.

“At the end of 1991, I was approached by management

to become a supervisor. I initially turned it down, because I was unsure if that’s what I wanted to do, but then I talked to some of the older employees there, and they said go for it, and so I did,” said Malaryk.

It was a role he had until 2015, when he moved into the planning department to plan and be the project manager for some of the large maintenance projects on the draglines.

Malaryk said he always tried to be a good mentor to the young people at the mines, which is why he believes he was asked to return to the mines and help out a young engineer who has taken on a supervisory role. “They have a large project ‌ starting ‌ and they asked me to come back as a consultant, and I opted to do that for the summer,â€? said Malaryk.

But it won’t be a fulltime gig, as he will have a week at work followed by a week off, ensuring he will get to enjoy the bulk of his first summer as a retired miner. “I can also pick and choose (my schedule) if I have some community service that I’m involved in,� said Malaryk. “I already told them that it would take priority.�

Malaryk said he enjoyed the people he worked with, and it’s the people who represent a big reason why he’s returning. “You build relationships with the people at the worksite.

You see them there, and that’s basically the only place you ever see them is at the job site, out at the mine. And ‌ when you retire, that’s what I started to miss were the relationships.�

When you do something for 43 years, it becomes ingrained in you, he said. Some of his habits still remain; he still can’t sleep past 7 a.m. because he’s still used to getting up at 6 a.m. for work.

Malaryk decided the end of last year was the opportune time to retire. He’s 63 years old and he wants to spend more time with his family. “I just wanted to experience some new things,� said Malaryk.

He’s also very involved in the community. A Torquay resident, Malaryk has been on the village council for a few terms. He’s also the vice-chair

of the Mainprize Regional Park Board and he recently joined the St. Joseph’s Hospital board.

He’s also involved with the South Central Trans-

portation Planning Committee that is tasked with the operation of highways in that part of the province.

Malaryk is looking forward to being more involved with those causes.

The community involve-

ment continues a trend from throughout his mining career. In 1980, he was elected to the executive of the United Mine Workers of America Local 7606, and served as the vice-president until 1986 when he resigned for per-

sonal reasons. He also served as the sub co-chairman of the Bienfait mine for the union’s safety committee.

But mining was always there for him. And now he’s looking forward to being back at the mines.

MINING WEEK MAY 26 - JUNE 1, 2019 Saskatchewan mining has a great history Mining in Saskatchewan has a rich and a strong history, and the southeast region has played an important role in that with its coal reserves.

The first record of coal seams in the Souris Valley in southern Saskatchewan was reported in 1857 by the Palliser Expedition.

Placer gold in the North Saskatchewan River was documented by the Palliser expedition in 1858.

In 1880, the first commercial coal mine was opened near Roche Percee.

Coal was sent to Winnipeg by barges on the Assiniboine and Souris Rivers.

Commercial clay production began in 1886 in the Estevan, Bruno and Claybank areas.

The Bienfait coal mine started production in 1905.

The first significant gold discovery was made in 1916 in the Amisk Lake area which became the Prince Albert (Monarch) Mine.

Potash exploration activity was reported in the Weyburn area the following year.

The first char plant to upgrade lignite for briquettes was built in 1921, and the first successful large scale strip coal mine went into operation in 1930.

In 1934 a gold discovery on the north shore of Lake Athabasca started a gold rush and establishment of the town of Goldfields (became the Box Mine).

Uranium was discovered north of Goldfields in 1935, and Uranium City became a major uranium mining camp from 1953

until 1982 when the mines closed. In 1948, the lifting of the ban on private staking of uranium triggered one of the largest staking rushes in Canadian history.

Potash was discovered near Radville in core from an oil and gas well in 1942.

The first attempt to mine potash using the solution method was done in 1951 near Unity.

Another milestone for coal mining in Saskatchewan came in 1955, when the last underground mine in the province was closed.

A successful solution potash mine opened at Belle Plaine in 1964. Other mines soon opened: Saskatoon (1968), Allan (1968), Lanigan (1968), Vanscoy (1969), Colonsay (1969) and Rocanville (1970).

tive program to encourage exploration led to the discovery of the Rabbit Lake uranium deposit in 1968 at Wollaston Lake. The mine opened in 1975 and mining is continuing in this region.

Rich uranium deposits were discovered at Cigar Lake in 1981. Production fo uranium at the Key Lake Mine started in 1983.

It was the world’s largest high-grade uranium deposit at the time.

Among the highlights from the 1990s were production of gold starting at the Seabee Mine in 1991, which is still in production and is currently the largest gold producer in the province; and production beginning for several different mines throughout the province.

Between 2007 and 2015,

the Saskatchewan potash industry has announced over $12 billion in expansions and debottlenecking projects at their existing operations in the province.

From 2005 through 2015, over $2.5 billion was invested in mineral exploration in Saskatchewan, with the majority of expenditures directed to discovering additional uranium deposits and greenfield potash deposits.

Canada’s mineral production reached a record $50 billion in 2011. Production values increased for most major minerals. Potash, coal and iron ore were the leading commodities by value of production.

In 2013, Saskatchewan remained the world’s leading producer of potash and second leading uranium

producer.

The carbon capture and storage facility at SaskPower’s Boundary Dam Power Station opened in 2014, greatly reducing the emissions generated by coalfired power at Boundary Dam’s Unit 3.

during my decades of working life that I consider my best decisions,” said Pratt.

“The first was to leave home care to accept an offer to work at Creighton Lodge.

“The second decision was what may be my legacy at Creighton Lodge – that decision was to only accept the job if Shelly Veroba was hired as my co-manager.”

Pratt noted that she can be long-winded at times, as evidenced by her Creighton Lodge report that would appear in the Estevan Mercury or Southeast Lifestyles each month.

But then she applauded those who came that day.

When she left home care to come to Creighton Lodge, she never imagined the difference it would make in her life.

The building report from 2010 said it was a very old structure in need of repairs, a nearly half-empty building as it only had 27 of a possible 51 residents, just one staff member willing to stay on, a kitchen that hadn’t been used to cook for nearly 10 years, and a trust fund that was down to its last $25,000.

“An attractive offer?

Maybe not, but it was a change and a challenge,” said Pratt. “I was familiar with Creighton Lodge as my home care staff had looked after the care of the residents and the cleaning of the common areas for the 15 years prior.”

Due to the cessation of government subsidization in 1995, it had been run under the management of home care and St. Joseph’s Hospital from 1995 to 2010, at which time the health region wanted to sell or close it.

When Pratt and Veroba were hired in 2010, she thought she would stick around for two years before Veroba would move into the full-time manager role.

“We felt together we

were the package that Creighton Lodge needed,” Pratt said.

They set about hiring the necessary cooking and cleaning staff and they rolled out three meals a day.

“Looking back on our first six months is a blur.

We renovated the kitchen, turned 10 bachelor suites into our five magnificent valley suites, painted all the hallways and dining room and had our suites all rented with a small waiting list which has now grown to 162,” said Pratt. “All the staff and many volunteers worked tirelessly.”

Pratt stayed around to see such projects as a lounge expansion and a kitchen renovation completed.

Ninety-five per cent of the rooms and the common area have been updated.

She hopes the success of the lodge and the lengthy waiting list would be an indication and a motivator to the community to create another lodge or add on to the existing one.

Pratt also weaved some humour into her speech, particularly when she talked Veroba. Pratt poked fun at Veroba’s singing and shopping skills, but then mentioned how Veroba always managed to brighten Pratt’s day.

“By the end of the day that started out so poorly, I’ll find myself walking out to my car with a spring in my step, a smile on my face, and singing a song … slightly off-key,” said Pratt.

Pratt will still be a familiar face at the lodge, as she looks forward to volunteering there in the future.

Hospital auxiliary holds May meeting Nineteen members of the St. Joseph’s Healthcare Auxiliary and one guest attended their most recent meeting May 20.

The meeting was the first for the auxiliary since their spring tea and bake sale on May 1, which the auxiliary hailed as a success.

Their cash raffle was drawn for at the sale. The winners were Jason LeBlanc for $500, Dr. Diana Naidu for

$300 and Joan McDavid for $200.

A big thank you to all who attended and to all who purchased tickets. It is much appreciated.

Three auxiliary members served tea, coffee and cookies to patients and staff at the hospital to commemorate Florence Nightingale Day on May 12.

The May meeting concluded with beverages and

a lunch.

The auxiliary’s next meeting will be June 17 at 6 p.m. It will be a potluck supper, to which the auxiliary will invite all of their knitters, crocheters and quilters who donate their beautiful work to the auxiliary.

Also, two Grade 12 graduates who will receive training in the medical field this fall will each receive a $1,000 scholarship.

Muslims welcome the community to join them for their Ramadan celebration The Muslim Community of Estevan welcomed people to join them May 23 for an iftar dinner at the Royal Canadian Legion’s Estevan branch.

Numerous dignitaries, legion representatives and other community leaders joined the Muslims for the event. It was not only an opportunity to interact and meet new people, but it was also a chance for the invited guests to learn more about Ramadan and the Islam faith.

Ramadan is from May 17June 14 this year. During the month, Muslims 15 years of age and up do not drink water or eat food from sunrise to sunset, although there are exceptions made for those with health issues.

The evening opened with Zia Abdul welcoming everyone and discussing the local community. Atif Hafeez offered some words from the Quran, which is Islam’s holy book, and then provided an English translation.

The Islamic centre has been around for nearly a decade. When it started, there were only two members, but now they have nearly 60 members. It provides Muslims with a place to worship, to uphold Islamic religion, and to promote brotherhood among Muslims and a bright future among Muslims and nonMuslims through education.

They have been renting different places in Estevan for

the past seven years, and they have been searching for a permanent base for their centre.

The local Muslim community has people who have come from all over the world to live and work in Estevan, and they now consider Estevan home, he said. And they have a diverse range of professions in the local community.

Estevan Mayor Roy Ludwig, Estevan MLA Lori Carr and Estevan Police Service Deputy Police Chief Murray Cowan then brought greetings to those gathered. Each of them said it was great to have Muslims in the community, and encouraged them to approach their respective agencies.

for his message even before he was finished, as he told the Muslim community members that City Hall is willing to work with them in any issues they have.

Carr, meanwhile, said that Ramadan reminds people to be humble and modest in greater service, and to treat people with respect.

Cowan said he was pleased to see people from so many different agencies and organizations in attendance to join the Muslims in celebrating Ramadan.

“We really focus on community engagement now in a way of building relationships, so that you can build trust among the police and the public,” said Cowan.

Events like the Ramadan celebration help build that trust.

Masloh provided the information on Ramadan and why it is significant to Muslims around the world. He noted that at this time of year, when the days are longer, they have to stop eating at 3 a.m., and then they go to the mosque to pray.

Then local children discussed their faith and their desire to have a permanent building constructed in Estevan.

The fast was broken at 8:44 p.m. with a snack and water, and then the Muslims gathered to pray. Afterwards, a large meal was served to everybody in attendance.

Marilyn Simons enters Sask.

Party race in Cannington Marilyn Simons, a local accounting professional and vegetable farmer from Alameda, has officially announced her candidacy for the Saskatchewan Partyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nomination in the Cannington constituency.

She and her husband raise their two children in a rural setting and are actively involved in the local community.

Simons has over 20 years of experience in the accounting and tax preparation field, which includes working for an independent firm, being a comptroller for a pipeline construction company and eventually branching out on her own.

She is on the board for the Alameda Figure Skating Club and the Estevan Farmers Market, and sings with her churchâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s worship team.

Simons also helps with Alameda Schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s school community council, the Alameda Dam fishing derby and the Carnduff and District Music and Arts Festival. â&#x20AC;&#x153;She values how her life experiences with farming and the oilfield encompasses much of what this area does and she would like the chance to represent these efforts,â&#x20AC;? Simons said in a news release.

Simonsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; plan is to continue to meet and be with the residents in all areas of the Cannington riding, as she feels that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important to make strong connections to truly advocate for the people.

Daryl Harrison from the Alida area and Winston van Staveren from the Creelman area are also seeking the nomination.

Dan Dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Autremont, the incumbent MLA for Cannington, has announced he will retire at the end of the current term.

Studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; art will be displayed in Alameda The artwork of talented young people in the Alameda area will be on display on June 2 at the Alameda School Auditorium.

The art show is being organized by the Swallowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Art Nest, which is owned by Alameda artist Judy Swallow.

The reception will run from 2-4 p.m., with pictures and presentations at 3 p.m.

About 30 students from four to 18 years of age will participate, as they have been involved with the youth workshops for the Swallowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Nest. They come once a week for an hour for art lessons.

Swallow said the artwork looks â&#x20AC;&#x153;fabulous.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s quite amazing how the scribbles and the work theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re developing turns out in the end,â&#x20AC;? said Swallow. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We do a lot of preliminary things before they have an exhibit piece, so I teach the basics of drawings, perspectives, shading, animals, birds, plants, nature, character development, cartooning, collage and 3-D clay.â&#x20AC;?

They also work in a variety of mediums, including pen and ink, prism colour, acrylic watercolour and graphic pencil.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll see a variety of that at the art show,â&#x20AC;? said Swallow. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something for everybody there as far as looking at the different genres and the different mediums they can work with.â&#x20AC;?

Ultimately, though, the Swallowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Nest wants to make art a fun and enjoyable experience for youths. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re wanting to show their best, and when they get in that creative space and that mode of creating, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just wonderful to watch and wonderful to see the results,â&#x20AC;? said Swallow. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And most of the time, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re pretty thrilled with what they accomplished.â&#x20AC;?

Many of the kids are from the Alameda area, but they also attract some from Arcola, Redvers, Oxbow, Carnduff and other communities.

The kids find it gratifying to see where they started and how their artwork has finished.

The art show is noncompetitive and not adjudicated, which gives them the freedom to create. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no goal other than to get better creatively. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Some of the kids have been coming for a lot of years,

since they were small, and this year they were chuckling over the kind of work they did when they were smaller, looking back on some of our adventures, and they see their own progress, which is really cool,â&#x20AC;? said Swallow.

Swallow doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t draw on their artwork to help them improve. She might use a tracing paper that she might put over their art and help them see where they can improve.

The art show will typically attract about 200-300 people, with family and friends, along with community members in attendance.

Swallow is well-versed in hosting art shows. She did it from 1976-1986, and then she stopped for a while. In that time period, she was still involved with the art world, including illustrating books and painting The Vanishing Valley series, which was a pictorial history of the Moose Creek and the Souris Valley regions before the construction of Alameda Dam. In 2004, she started hosting art shows every three years. That continued until 2014, and now she does them annually. Â

Carlyle RCMP investigating theft near Forget The Carlyle RCMP is investigating a break and enter at a rural property south of Forget in the rural municipality of Tecumseh.

According to a message from the Saskatchewan Crime Watch Advisory Network, the owner of the

property returned after being away for three weeks to find numerous items missing from a cabin and garage.

It is believed that the theft occurred during the past week.

Numerous firearms and ammunition were taken

along with household items and tools. A possible suspect has been identified, but the RCMP is looking for anyone with information.

They can contact the Carlyle RCMP at 306-453-6707 or their local RCMP detachment.

Jay Riedelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work is recognized by Estevan Yellow Vests One of the original Estevan yellow vest protests organizers Jay Riedel received recognition Saturday for his work during the weekly demonstration in front of City Hall.

On behalf of the city and its citizens, fellow yellow vest protester Bill Clements handed Riedel the certificate

of recognition. In this manner, Estevan protesters thanked Riedel for promoting the energy sector throughout Canada.

Riedel along with Pat King is running Rollinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; with Pat and Jay social media channel. King also received a similar certificate a week earlier.

Riedel and King recently returned

from Ontario, where they spent about a month hosting town hall meetings and talking about issues such as pipelines, the carbon tax and illegal immigration.

Prior to that, they were on a similar trip in Alberta. And earlier they were a part of the United We Roll Convoy to Ottawa in February.

Avoiding this guy took some mighty quick reactions.

It was a Friday afternoon; the weather was absolutely gorgeous and half the population of our town seemed to be grocery shopping. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d only come for a jug of milk but as every shopper can attest, one rarely leaves with less than half a cart.

Such was the case this day â&#x20AC;&#x201C; except that my cart was nearly full and so was the cart that nearly ran into mine. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sorry,â&#x20AC;? the driver apologized. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When I get into these places, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a terrible driver.â&#x20AC;? I smiled (how could I not, recalling the near misses Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d precipitated). â&#x20AC;&#x153;Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t worry about it, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a pretty lousy driver in store aisles, too.â&#x20AC;?

Mr. Near-Miss, his wife, and I exchanged smiles and wished each other a great day. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Well done, Linda,â&#x20AC;? I thought to myself. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You handled that well.â&#x20AC;?

Determined to demonstrate my navigational expertise to staff and shoppers alike, I eased around the corner. No crossing into the wrong lane by this cart! I heard the crash before I saw copies of the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best-selling diet manual slithering between the onions and the potatoes.

Mr. Near-Missâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s beaming face loomed over my kneeling form. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Told you I was a lousy driver,â&#x20AC;? I whimpered, grabbing at books while blathering something to three acquaintances who happened to saunter by.

The clerk was gracious. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Never did believe in that diet, anyhow,â&#x20AC;? he consoled, stocking the flimsy cardboard display case. With blazing face and no milk, I fled to the checkout counter, paid my bill and raced (carefully) to the safety of home. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For he will conceal me there when troubles come; he will hide me in his sanctuary.

He will place me out of reach on a high rock.â&#x20AC;?

Amen and phew â&#x20AC;&#x201C; I head there often.

Taekwondo club members receive black belts Four members of the Estevan Taekwon-Do Club were rewarded for the efforts and their hard work this past weekend when it came time for black belt testing.

Simone Saigeon was promoted from first to second-degree black belt, while Danielle Stephany, Tiny Longney and Taya Saigeon received their first-degree black belts.

Wayne Brown, who is one of the instructors for the club, said there is a lot that goes into receiving the high honour in martial arts.

“The three ladies that tested for black belt all put in between seven to nine years of training before they were asked to do tests,” said Brown. “They go up in the belt ranks, and gain proficiency in different techniques and patterns.”

At the level of black belt, someone reaches the stage where they have met requirements of new movements.

They start putting those moves together, and learning more enhanced moves.

“It really is the beginning of a new journey in taekwondo, because up to that point,

you’ve just been introduced to a lot of different moves,” Brown said.

The testing for the black belts occurred on May 24, and consisted of about 3 1/2 hours of exams that had many different components.

There was a written test with an essay in which they had to

explain the impact taekwondo has had on their fitness, confidence and personal lives.

“It can be quite an emotional paper for them to write, and they read it to all that are there and witnessing the testings,” said Brown.

Then they have to do

patterns required for a black belt, and perform patterns they learned at the various belt stages.

A fitness component required push-ups, sit-ups and jumping jacks, all of which were timed. They also had to demonstrate kicks and different techniques, show

their knowledge of sparring, blocks, strikes and self-defence.

Breaking requirements included hand and foot techniques.

Finally there was a knowledge requirement on a number of questions.

“Over the six to nine

years, whatever it takes some people, depending on their training schedule and their commitment, you start to put all of that information together in techniques and training, and at that point in black belt testing you get an opportunity to demonstrate it and show your proficiency in it,” said Brown.

As for the promotion to a second-degree black belt, the minimum requirement is to commit to training, teaching and giving back to others, and the commitment is at least two years before testing.

The wait time goes up incrementally for each degree of black belt, so it will be three years before a seconddegree black belt can go for a third-degree test. “there is always learning to be had, but there is a time commitment in order to test for the degree,” said Brown.

Black belts were handed out after the testing. Additional testing occurred on Saturday for the other colour belt promotions. About 30 students tested for promotions in each ranking.

A windup supper was held that night.

Bob Burns mentored many young umpires Bob Burns, a long-time umpire in Estevan who was inducted into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame, has died. He was 89.

Burns was born in 1930 on the family homestead in

Flintoft District, Saskatchewan. He bought and sold grain in the early 1950s and worked in sales for a vehicle dealership and in retail. He also drove a taxi cab for 10 years.

During this time, he pursued his passion in sports, coaching hockey and baseball, enjoying many successes.

But he became best known in the sports community for his work in baseball.

Known as “The Ump” in the community, he officiated baseball, fastball and softball games throughout southern Saskatchewan well into his 80s. During his time as an umpire, he called numerous provincial and Western Canadian games.

“His fairness and quick comments endeared him to both players and fans,” his obituary stated. “He was instrumental in developing programs to train young officials and was inspirational to all (in) the sport of baseball.”

Burns spent more than 60 years as an umpire, and was inducted into the Saskatch-

ewan Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003. Back pain forced him to step away from umpiring in 2013, but he continued to be a mentor and a coach for young umpires in the southeast.

He was the umpire-inchief for Estevan Minor Baseball and the Zone 1 representative for officials with Baseball Saskatchewan from 1993-2015, which he retired

from baseball.

Burns helped organize annual clinics in Estevan and other communities to make sure officials were trained and certified. He was also tasked

with scheduling officials for Estevan Minor Baseball.

A celebration of life was held May 26 at 1 on Bob Burns Field at Cactus Park in Estevan,
