Town Of Estes Park Welcomes David Greear As Public Works Director

David Greear David Greear began service as the Town of Estes Park’s new Public Works

Director on April 28. Town Administrator Travis Machalek commented, “I am excited to welcome David as the Town's new Public Works Director. His extensive leadership experience in public works will be an invaluable asset to our team, and will have a positive impact on our community.”

Greear commented, “I have lived and worked as an engineer in central Texas for the last 35 years and am excited to start my next adventure here in Estes Park. I am moving here with my wife (April) and three dogs. My wife and I have raised five great kids who are now adulting (with occasional monetary support). My wife April is an elementary school teacher, but plans to take a break from teaching while she explores

The Town’s Public Works Department consists of the Transportation & Stormwater (Engineering & Operations, Parks, and Parking & Transit Divisions. They exist to deliver the daily services desired by our residents and to serve as a technical resource to the citizen Transportation Advisory Board.

Some Raptor Closures In The Lumpy Ridge Area Of RMNP Have Been Lifted, Others Remain For The Protections Of Nesting Birds Of Prey Each year to protect nesting raptors, Rocky Mountain National Park officials initiate temporary closures in areas of the park. To ensure that these birds of prey can nest undisturbed, specific areas within the park are closed temporarily to public use during nesting season and monitored by wildlife managers.

The following temporary closures have been lifted in the Lumpy Ridge area of RMNP: The Book, Bookmark, Bookmark Pinnacle, Left Book, Thunder Buttress, The Needle, and The Parish.

Based on raptor monitoring, the following formations and access trails remain closed for the protection of nesting raptors: Rock One and Twin Owls.

For more information and to see a map of closure areas, visit https://go.nps.gov/romo/raptorclosures Nesting birds of prey include many species of hawks, Peregrine falcons, and Golden eagles. Peregrine falcons can dive at speeds over 200 mph and may

cause harm to humans when defending their nests. If disturbance pressure from human use is sustained near a nesting area, birds of prey will abandon their nest, causing chick mortality. These closures are in place for the safety of both visitors and wildlife.

The National Park Service is committed to preserving birds of prey. If nest sites are located or territorial behaviors such as aggressive divebombing/vocalizing or birds fleeing nest sites due to human disturbance are observed, please report the location to romo_information@nps.gov Thank you to Rocky Mountain Conservancy for their generous support of raptor monitoring and raptor education projects. The same cliffs that are critical for raptors also appeal to climbers. The cooperation of climbing organizations and individuals continues to be essential to the successful nesting of raptors in Rocky Mountain National Park.

EVFPD firefighters generally respond to medical calls in their personal vehicles, allowing for a faster response. On other incidents, firefighters respond to a fire station to respond in department apparatus with specialized equipment.

During the week of June 1st, 2025, the Estes Valley Fire Protection District (EVFPD) responded to 18 calls for serv-

How Concerned Are You With Road Safety And Improved Mobility?

Larimer County Wants To Know By: Estes Chamber of Commerce The Estes Valley community has a choice to make - Larimer County is facing a budget shortfall for that will impact road and transportation projects starting in 2027. Residents are being given the opportunity to voice their opinions and help shape the plan, before decision are made and impacts are felt across the area.

According to Larimer County, without additional revenue by 2027 we will have less than 25% of the total funding needed for road safety, traffic flow, and intersection improvements. The county will also lack matching funds that would ordinarily help bring outside grant money to our county.

The “why” is simple, increased demand and rising costs have outpaced revenue.

Which, in many cases, is a good thing.

We’ve seen increased tourism and new job opportunities leading to increased resident volume, and new enterprises popping up around Larimer. That also means increased impact and stress on our roadways.

“It was surprising to me to learn that many of our bridges are over 50-yearsold and failing to meet traffic demands and safety requirements,” added DePas-

quale. “The county said that materials and labor for bridge repair has increased 50% in the past 5 years, yet the Larimer receives less than $1 per month from most property insurance for these types of infrastructure updates. That tells me that the need for this discussion is real and that our residents have the opportunity to have their voices heard, and we should speak up.”

To enable residents to share their opinions, Larimer County has developed a short survey which allows residents to rate their level of concern and choose: Option 1: Cut essential transportation projects This would have both immediate and long term impacts on roads and bridges including cuts to safety, traffic mitigation, road improvements, etc.

Option 2: Collecting a new 0.15% sales tax This would cost consumers 15 cents on a $100 purchase (excluding groceries and certain other items) Estimated to raise about $15 million annually and cover anticipated needs through 2050 Stay informed and share your thoughts: www.investinlarimer.co

June 14th -The Day To Celebrate Flag Day “That the flag of the United States shall be of thirteen stripes of alternate red and white, with a union of thirteen stars of white in a blue field, representing the new constellation.”

This was the resolution adopted by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777.

Our flag was first carried by soldiers into battle On September 11, 1777 in the Revolutionary Battle of The Brandywine. President Wilson, in 1916, and President Coolidge in 1927, issued proclamations asking for June 14 to observed as National Flag Day. But it was not until August 3, 1949, that Congress approved June 14 to be observed as our National Flag Day, and President Harry Truman signed it in to law.

“Old Glory,” “The Stars and Stripes,” “The Star-Spangled Banner” … our flag is known fondly by many names. It is revered by most, but has been burned and trod upon by those who feel abandoned, maligned, or left behind. Yet it flies still, proud, as a purveyor of both history and hope. Our flag is, at least hopefully, a symbol of our national unity – a symbol that encompasses and accepts many admittedly differing political points of view.

Yes, I stand proudly when the flag passes, or when our anthem is sung.

Come by my house, or the Legion, any day, and you fill see the flag proudly, properly flying. And yes, I shed a tear when those who, when presented with our flag or anthem, choose to kneel and pray. The tear is not for their actions, but rather for the absolute fact that, unfortu-

nately, there are so many who have experienced a different America than what the mainstream flag symbolizes. It is a fact that there are disadvantaged who do not look at our flag with the same sense of awe and respect as most of us. We can choose to belittle, disparage, and denigrate them, or we can strive to create a nation of caring and support, such that future generations of today’s kneelers will stand proudly, and share in the glory in the presentation of our flag.

True patriotism consists not in waving the flag, but in striving that our country shall be righteous and fair, as well as strong. Liberty is not only the power of doing what we like, but the responsibility to do what we ought. For all.

For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom and character of all others.

Only one flag flies above all the rest – a flag of universal oneness.

May that always be the flag of the United States of America. Please join us at American Legion Post 119 this Saturday, June 14, at 3:00 p.m. as we celebrate our flag and our country.

We will also celebrate the 250th Birthday of the United States Army this Saturday, June 14. Come join us for this celebration and Flag Day – and, by the way, any Legionnaire Army Veteran eats free at The Tavern at the Legion this Saturday.

Governor Polis Appoints Bank Of Estes Park President To State Banking Board

Scott Applegate Governor Jared Polis has appointed Scott Applegate (President & CEO of Bank of Estes Park) to the Colorado State Banking Board. The appointment falls under the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies, in the Division of Banking.

This board is the policy, rulemaking, and supervisory authority for the Division of Banking in the State of Colorado—comprised of five banking executives from across the state, an executive officer of a money trans-

mitter company, an executive officer of a trust company, and two public members with expertise in finance.

Scott brings a unique resume to the table, having been an executive at banks from large to small, from established to new, and from urban to rural, with all of them having been run in a regulatorily safe and sound manner, and all top tier from a profitability perspective. According to Applegate, “When you put the client first, make long-term relationships the top priority, and just do things the right way, the rest just takes care of itself.”

Will this appointment change Applegate’s focus in any way? “My primary professional focus is Estes Park, our clients, our community, our employees, our shareholders—and that is permanent. This town and this bank is my family and my home. But I’ve also been truly blessed in my life and in my career to have had the very best mentors anywhere, and this appointment now gives me the opportunity to deploy their wisdom and knowledge at the very highest level of banking across the entire state of Colorado. epnews.com Last Friday I drove 140 miles to a P.E.O. state chapter convention.

(P.E.O. is an organization that helps women around the world advance through education.) When I arrived and stepped out of the car I had to grab onto the car door to stop myself from toppling.

Well, that’s a little dramatic.

Let’s just say I felt woozy.

I have been wobbly ever since. I’m on a merry-goround and I can’t get off.

People have sometimes called me dizzy, but I don’t think this is what they mean.

When my brother-in-law’s mother had vertigo, she was told to lie on her back with her head hanging over the edge of the bed, then

roll her head back and forth.

It was a good idea but when I tried it, the upside down, back and forth motion made me feel like I might urp.

So, rather than try to type a column while feeling like I’ve had a few too many, I’m going to give it a rest and hope my head will right itself. (Online info says vertigo is rarely something serious.

I’ll be fine.)

It is me and not the planet, right?

Join The Conversation About “Flock Safety Cameras” And How They Could Be Used In Estes Park

Facilitated Conversations take place June 24 and 26 The Estes Park Police Department wants to know what community members think about “Flock Safety Camera” technology and its potential use at major highway entrances/exits to Estes Park. Flock Cameras are license plate recognition cameras that help law enforcement agencies identify vehicles to support critical public safety operations like locating missing children or adults (AMBER or Silver Alerts), and locating fugitives, suspects of crimes and stolen vehicles. License plate data is stored in a secure system for 30 days, accessible only by authorized personnel. If Flock Cameras are installed in Estes Park in the future, they would add to a network of existing license plate recognition cameras positioned by other agencies along roadways surrounding the community.

The Estes Valley Restorative Justice Partnership (EVRJP) will offer two Fa-

cilitated Conversations to gather community input on the potential installation of Flock Cameras in Estes Park.

These conversations will take place at the Estes Park Museum, 200 Fourth Street, on June 24 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and June 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. All community members are invited to attend. Police Chief Ian Stewart will join the group to provide information, listen to the conversations, and answer any questions that arise.

Facilitated Conversations is a program offered by EVRJP to allow groups of people to work together toward solving disputes or having conversations where conflict or potential conflict is present. This service is free and able to be utilized by any group within the Estes Valley. EVRJP is a partnership between the Estes Park Police Department and a community-based nonprofit. Estes Valley Photo Club Speaker Series Presents Beyond NaturePhotographing Urban, Decay And Abstraction With John Shelton The Estes Valley Photo Club will be meeting on Thursday, June 19 at 6:00 p.m. in the Hondius Room of the Estes Valley Library, 335 E. Elkhorn Avenue.

The presentation that evening will be Beyond Nature — Photographing Urban, Decay & Abstraction with John Shelton.

Using the tools of perspective and illumination, John’s photographs highlight the textures, patterns, line, and layers within, while presenting strong contrasts and rich complementary hues throughout. Whether in color or grayscale, his work evokes mood, serenity, solitude, and an ethereal quality that brings added depth, beauty, and meaning to a thing, place or situation.

This presentation by John Shelton will discuss his technical approach to his work and how he finds and shoots landscapes. 20th Anniversary Of Brad Fitch John Denver Tribute Concert The Rotary Club of Estes Park Foundation presents the 20th anniversary Estes Park John Denver Tribute Concert, performed by Brad Fitch and the TropiCowboy Band.

The concert will be Saturday, August 23 at Ruesch Auditorium at the YMCA of the Rockies, west of Estes Park and bordering Rocky Mountain National Park. Fitch and his band will play Denver's timeless, beloved hit songs, at a beautiful venue high in the Rocky Mountains.

SnowBelt Bluegrass will open the show at 5 p.m., with

the Denver tribute beginning at 6:30.

This crowd-pleasing event will benefit the works of the Rotary Club of Estes Park, whose main objective is service -in the community, in the workplace and around the globe. In town, a single medical practice has over 325 patients who could benefit from assistance for both their patients and their caregivers. Although the exact number is not known, there are likely around 1,000 patients and their caregivers in the Estes Valley who would benefit from this service.

Resident Pete Sinnott advocates tirelessly for a nonprofit facility to help dementia patients and their caregivers.

He recently reported to the local “Docs Off The Clock” group on his efforts to bring an important and needed dementia daycare service to the Estes Valley. His research shows that the closest alternatives are located down the mountain. The only other not-forprofit facility in this region is a long drive away in Fort Collins.

Our local “Docs Off the Clock” group of nurses, accountants, and active and retired physicians, is very interested in

supporting the healthcare needs of the Estes Valley. They report, “We are keenly interested in supporting this effort that Pete Sinnott is making to get this much-needed service established, including its financial viability.”

Bond Park Cowboy Singalong Series Kicks Off This Sunday Park, Colorado. Although this is an uncovered, outdoor venue, rainouts are rare. Attendees often bring along blankets or folding chairs to sit on, as the park has limited seating but plenty of room to spread out.

This series originated in the mid-1990s, when it was exclusively cowboy music.

Though the name has been retained, the hour-long performance has evolved to include campfire favorites, novelty songs, classic country, folk, kid songs and Fitch’s own compositions.

90th Birthday Party Thanks!

To The Editor: This past week, I had a very special experience, thanks to my dear friends in Estes. Colleagues in the League of Women Voters held a very lovely party to celebrate my 90th Birthday. I so wish that I could thank each person individually for spending their time with me. The American Legion was a perfect venue.

So here is a message to each person who attended. “Thank you so much for attending my birthday party!” I should have spoken at the time, but I was overwhelmed, and did not think to do so at the event.

Estes is a giving, loving, generous community, and I feel so fortunate to be part of this extraordinary place filled with incredible people.

The prospect of living in this beautiful place kept me going when my dear husband and I lived in the east.

I could not ask for more.

Thank you to all who have made this such a welcoming community, and for doing your part to make it so. Thank you and blessings for our whole community, and another extra special thanks to those folks who came to the party.

Estes Park Health Welcomes New Family Medicine Practitioner

Dr. Hannah Fields will join Estes Park Health as a family medicine practitioner in July.

Returning to her Colorado roots, family physician Hannah Fields has accepted a position at Estes Park Health.

She will begin seeing patients at the end of July.

Like many young adults growing up in Boulder, Colo., Fields often ventured to the mountains, where she loved to explore the trails and ridges on skis and in hiking boots. Where her talent really shined, however, was in the classroom.

An overachiever by nature, Fields attended the University of Colorado Boulder and in four years completed degrees in biochemistry and psychology as well as a minor in chemistry and a certificate in neuroscience. It wasn’t enough for Fields to complete coursework in a variety of scientific subjects; she also graduated summa cum laude, the highest academic honor for college graduates indicating completion of a research thesis of excellent

quality and grades in the top 5% of their class.

Although one might think someone with this level of ambition and academic excellence would prefer to be at home reading books, Fields’ personality exudes enthusiasm, cheerfulness and energy. That energy and passion for helping people – and a natural talent for science – led Fields to pursue medicine.

“While working in a small hospital in Peru and designing my honors thesis about health beliefs and prenatal care, I became passionate about the power of science applied to help people live their best lives,” said Fields when asked what attracted her to medicine.

After UC Boulder, Fields was awarded a Dean’s Scholarship to attend the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine (Alix) in Rochester, Minn., for her medical degree. While in medical school, Dr. Fields was granted a scholarship from the Mayo Clinic to pursue a master’s in public health from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain after her second year of studies. Her master’s degree coursework, practicum and research focused on program and policy evaluation, and her thesis work implemented and evaluated a pilot program of prescribing community activities in rural towns in northeast Spain.

She completed her Medical Doctorate in 2015 in Minnesota.

Fields returned to Colorado to complete her residency at the University of Colorado and Denver Health, taking a special interest in studying global health, cross-cultural medicine, preventive medicine, family planning and community medicine.

Upon completing her residency, Fields launched her career as a family physician for Salud Family Health Centers in Estes Park, serving as their medical director. Here she could apply her fluent Spanish as well as her goals of helping family members of all ages improve their overall health through preventive medicine. She has also

worked as a physician at Harmony Foundation in Estes Park and as part of the clinical faculty at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

In 2022, Fields moved to Madison, Minn., to work at Madison Healthcare Services, but her heart longed for Colorado and to be closer to family. She was eager to return to Estes Park and jumped at the chance to be back in town when the family practitioner position opened earlier this year.

“I am excited to come home to Estes Park where we have our home,” said Fields, smiling at the thought of being back in Estes Valley on a full-time basis. “We really feel at home here in the mountains and closer, more connected to our families.”

Fields continues to add to her training. She is currently working on completing a second board certification – her first is in family medicine – in lifestyle medicine.

“Lifestyle medicine is preventing, treating and reversing chronic diseases using non-medication treatment plans,” said Fields. “You can improve or even reverse hypertension, diabetes, obesity, anxiety, depression, chronic pain disorders and inflammatory disorders by applying lifestyle changes, like nutrition, physical activity, social connections, stress reduction, better sleep and refraining from the use of substances.”

Fields will be moving back to Estes Park with her husband, whom she met while studying in Barcelona, and two dogs in the coming weeks.

“I am looking forward to meeting the needs of the community and providing excellent primary care,” said Fields.

“This is an active and vibrant community invested in their health, and I am excited to help empower people to enhance their understanding about their health.”

This summer, the Christian Church of Estes Park invites local families to "Magnified," a week-long Vacation Bible School (VBS) experience designed to help children discover the greatness of God through the smallest details of His creation.

Running June 23 through June 27 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. daily, VBS is open to children entering Kindergarten through 5th grade graduates.

The program is completely free and will be held at the Christian Church of Estes Park, located at 4655 US Highway 36, Estes Park, Colorado.

“Magnified” is a week of unforgettable fun, new friendships, and lifechanging discovery. Children will enjoy hands-on experiments, engaging Bible lessons, high-energy music, games, crafts, and more. Little Buckaroo Ranch Barn house, and the house that still stands on the bank of the Colorado River. For guests unfamiliar with such wilderness, their trek around the original homestead is an adventure back in time.

The barn is the highlight representing a rare type of structure found almost exBy: Brad Manard The first time I saw the barn, I had a feeling that both exuded and inspired a sense of history. It stood isolated in a field, reminiscent of a time past as mountains rose up in the background. It is on the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park in Kawuneeche Valley. Known as Betty Dick’s Barn or the Little Buckaroo Ranch Barn, it stands alone as a statement of the past.

Homesteaded in 1914 by Nelson C. House, the ranch barn was built in 1942. Today it is part of RMNP and

one of my favorite areas to meander about with hopes of spotting wildlife.

It started five years ago as I began guiding RMNPhotographer Tours.

We’d take guests to see the barn. It was a two block walk down an ancient farm

road into the Kawuneeche Valley meadow. For many guests, wearing unfamiliar hiking boots and their eyes open watching for dark, moving spots called moose, the walk to the barn was a great wilderness adventure.

Standing in the foreground of the Never Summer Mountain Range, RMNPhotographer guests love seeing the old homestead. This includes the first cabin, eventually used as a bunk-

clusively in southern Louisiana while the barn’s construction is of natural materials from the RMNP area. While RMNP once had many lodges, inns, ranch houses and homesteads, the National Park Service has worked over many years to restore the landscape to its natural setting, The Little Buckaroo Ranch Barn is one of the few remaining historic structures in the park.

I remember on one of my first tours, my guests thought I was an amazing guide. I explained I was going to do some quick scouting. Walking over the bridge and down the trail of a road toward the barn, moments later I returned.

Excited, I guided them a hundred yards to point out a good sized bull moose in the meadow.

They were thrilled, and I was a super guide.

Then there was the early June day when one of our tour guests had a bad knee. We parked along the Colorado River as she sent this super guide and his guest off in search of wildlife.

We walked and maneuvered, searched and hoped to see something, but it was not our day. When we returned to the vehicle, the hobbled guest asked what we saw. “Nothing,” replied the not so super guide.

That’s when she opened her phone saying, “While I was sitting here waiting, this happened.” There on her phone was the beautiful, full frame image of a moose calf standing belly deep in the Colorado River, her mother watched over her from the riverside. The guest shrugged, smiling, “They just walked out of the woods into the river, right

here while I was sitting in the car.” Such is the life of a sometimes super guide.

For me, I like walking the land, over the bridge to the barn, and around the trail to the old homestead. The buildings, for the most part, survived the 2020 East Troublesome Fire that skirted all around it.

Among the charred trees, I see the house on the bank of the Colorado River, and I envision the history, the families, children, and ranchers that embraced this land in a tougher time.

There were multiple landowners between 1914 and when RMNP fully took over the property in 2006. The most inter-

esting part of its history may be in the last few years. In the 1980s much of the land was sold to the NPS, and the final owners, Fred (who died in 1992) and Betty Dick, leased the land until 2005. It was at that point that the lease ended, and the NPS

worked to have Betty leave the property.

After much legal maneuvering by the 83 year old Betty Dick, in 2006 Congress passed the “Betty Dick Residence Protection Act” which was then signed

by President George W. Bush. The legislation gave Betty "life estate" rights to use part of the land and the cabin for the rest of her life. Sadly, Betty Dick died months after the proclamation

was signed.

As a historical statement, the house, outbuildings, and Little Buckaroo Ranch Barn stand empty in the middle of the RMNP wilderness. Such was the day on June 6, 2022, when I photographed a bull moose and three cows crossing the Colorado River. Anticipating their path, I circled around capturing them trotting across the old homestead with the Little Buckaroo Ranch Barn as the photograph’s backdrop. It was an image of then and now.

Today, the barn stands as a memorial to a time past. It reminds us of the hard era and hardy people who came before us to this mountain meadow. They were the people before we cherished it as a

national park. The Little Buckaroo Ranch Barn is a beautiful, wooden-warn memory of what was and a nice place for a meandering walk through the meadow today.

Swedish Folk Artist Sofia Talvik To Perform In Estes Park June 15 Intimate afternoon concert at American Legion Post 119 as part of Listening at the Legion series International touring artist Sofia Talvik will bring her acclaimed folk music to Estes Park on Sunday, June 15 at 2:00 p.m. as part of the Listening at the Legion series at Circle 119 – Home of American Legion Post 119. The concert is open to the public and promises an afternoon of heartfelt storytelling and song.

Talvik, a Swedish-born singer/songwriter, is in the midst of a 50-concert Midwest tour, bringing her distinctive blend of Nordic-influenced Americana to audiences across the region. Known for her clear, haunting voice and poetic lyrics, she has drawn comparisons to Joni Mitchell and Buffy

Sainte-Marie. Her most recent album, released in 2023, received national airplay and was considered for a Grammy nomination in the Best Folk Album category.

Though she’s played major festivals, Talvik says it’s smaller, communitycentered shows like this that leave the biggest impact.

Fine Arts Guild’s Youth Theater To Present Singin’ In The Rain, Jr.

Remember Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds in that classic romantic musical comedy Singin’ in the Rain? Well, rehearsals began this week for the Fine Arts Guild’s Youth Theater production of Singin’ in the Rain, Jr. and the original cast of the movie couldn’t have worked any harder than our young thespians. In the deft hands of our cadre of directors, students are working on vocal musical numbers with Melinda Workman, acting techniques and character development with Braden Miller, and choreography with Jocelyn Bolster in large and small groups.

The techies are also busy constructing and painting set pieces designed by Greig Steiner, and figuring out microphone use and how some can best be shared between actors.

Having forty-nine actors to mic is a lot!

Kerry Aiken and Susie Stephens, our costume mavens and friends have collected, purchased and made a huge array of costumes and accessories and organized them in a way that the actors can successfully make the necessary costume changes

quickly and easily.

You can see the fruits of these labors on Saturday, June 21 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, June 22 at 2:00 p.m. at the Estes Park High School auditorium.

“HONORING AMERICA’S ‘POINT MEN’ – HAPPY FATHERS’ DAY” In Steve Farrar’s powerful book for fathers, ‘Point Man’, he encourages fathers to picture themselves leading a battalion of soldiers through a jungle filled with enemy snipers and wire-triggered land mines. This leader is committed to getting his troops safely through without the loss of one. Then, Steve urges them to see themselves leading a much smaller troop…their family…through a jungle no less dangerous…current human society, with its many dangers, temptations, all committed to ‘wiping out’ his troop. How well will they fare without their faithful and determined ‘Point Man’?

In the family, the faithful ‘Point Man’ will be aware that his wife and children need certain ‘needs’ met to be successful and happy. One family expert, Abraham Maslow, has outlined a ‘Hierarchy of Needs’ that every successful person, young and old, needs to have available to them in order to be successful: (1) Physiological – food, air, shelter; (2) Safety – Protection, health; (3) Love and belonging – family, friendship, a sense of belonging; (4) Esteem – self-esteem, a sense of value / self-worth; (5) Self-actualization...the encouragement to grow to their full potential. While others: mothers, extended family, can contribute to these, a worthy ‘Point Man’ is needed to lead the way, being there, ‘present in their lives’. It is touching to hear Reba McIntire’s song about “The Greatest Man I Never Knew”. In her sad song, she tells about her father ‘who lived just down the hall, but we never talked at all’. He was so busy, so preoccupied with work and other things he felt he needed to do, that they had no relationship. And now he had passed away, without ever telling her he loved her. Many have experienced this kind of failed relationship. Their ‘Point Man’ is missing. How can they celebrate ‘Father’s Day’?

I know a little about being a father like hers. When my first son, Kirby, was seven years old, I was directing a Christian Youth camp in northern Arizona. We had a staff of workers, two hundred campers, thus, many things I thought ‘I’ had to do. Several days into our camp, my wife asked me if I had noticed what Kirby called me. I hadn’t, but I did the next time he came to me about something. He said, “Bob…can we…?” Kirby had learned that I was receptive to those who addressed me with that designation, but if he called me ‘Dad’, I seemed to be ‘too busy’. I learned my lesson that day.

So if we have fathers that are present…and there for us…and show it in many ways, we need to take time this week to ‘count the ways’…their ‘own’ ways of showing love, support, and encouragement to us. As we did with mothers on Mother’s Day (M-O-T-H-E-R) perhaps we could use F-A-T-H-E-R, as an acronym for ‘Him’: ‘Friend–Admirer–Teacher—Hero--Encourager-Reliable’. Hopefully, these are words you can use, or replace with others that better describe your father. Write them down in a neat letter or card and give them to him on Father’s Day. No present is usually needed, as these kind words will let him know how loved and appreciated he is. But, do it while he is ‘here’, not after he is gone, penned in a eulogy for his memorial service.

Some men might say: “Well, it’s too late! My wife or someone else is already their ‘Point Man’”. A dear Nebraska friend, Ron Stoddard, was not a churchgoer. His wife was the spiritual ‘Point Man’. Every Sunday Ron stayed home while his wife and his children attended worship at the Church of Christ building on 40th and Vine. Each Sunday, when the family returned home, Ron would ask “Well, what did Tim (Woodroof…the minister) talk about today?”

Usually, one of the children would give him a synopsis of the message. But one Sunday, his oldest daughter, said: “Dad, you need to come and hear for yourself!” Ron did… and became the ‘Point Man’ for his family, and for the church family, very quickly becoming one of their leaders.

It’s never too late…and all will be blessed. Your family, and your church family, need faithful ‘Point Men’.

To all fathers who are ‘there’ for their families, and trying to do their very best for them, I salute and pray God’s blessing upon you as you strive to raise or encourage your family in ways that please Him…and them. May you always rejoice in and be blessed by their results.

Is Your Retirement At Risk?

It’s important to save for retirement, but only half of Americans have calculated how much money they’ll need, according to the 2024 Retirement Confidence Survey by the Employee Benefit Research Institute. Yet without knowing how much you'll need, it's hard to know if you're on track to reach your goals for retirement.

Here are a few considerations to help shape your retirement savings strategy.

Calculate how much you’ll need.

You may dream of retiring “comfortably,” but how do you define “comfortable” in terms of actual money? Take the time to outline how much you spend now, and how much you think you’ll spend in retirement. That will help you understand how much you need to save now to afford the retirement lifestyle you want later. A financial advisor can help with resources and knowledge for building and managing your retirement strategy.

Start saving now. It’s easy to procrastinate, especially if you are younger and further away from retirement. But the earlier you start, the less you may need to save from each paycheck to build your funds over time. If you’re closer to retirement, you can take advantage of catch-up contributions to most 401(k), 403(b), governmental 457 plans and the federal government’s Thrift Savings Plan. If you’re 50 or older, you can save pretax an extra $7,500 to your retirement account beyond the standard total limit of $23,500 allowed in 2025. Those 60–63 years old can contribute to these plans an extra $11,250 above the standard total limit.

That’s an annual total of $31,000 for people ages 50 and older; or $34,750 for those 60–63 years old in pretax retirement plan contributions.

Take the right amount of risk. You may think it’s risky to put money away

for retirement instead of keeping it handy for discretionary spending. But the biggest risk of all is not reaching your retirement goal. For example, a portfolio that’s all in cash will have little increasing value over time and won’t provide any growth potential even to keep up with inflation. It's as if you're losing money every year. Then again, if your investments are only keeping up with inflation, your money is not growing. Consider growth investments to help build the funds you’ll need in retirement. The key is ensuring you have the appropriate amount of risk — not too much, but not too little — to achieve your growth goals.

Save separately for emergencies. To protect your hard-earned retirement savings, build an emergency fund separate from your long-term investments. It can help ensure you have what you need to cover surprises like a large auto repair, unexpected medical bills, temporary loss of income from changing jobs or early retirement caused by health issues. For most people, three to six months’ worth of total expenses is an appropriate amount for an emergency fund. And you'll want to keep it in an accessible, low-risk account that holds cash and equivalents. Above all, try to avoid taking money from your long-term retirement investments. Doing so could result in taxes, penalties and reductions to your overall principal investment, all of which could affect your retirement savings.

Retirement should be an exciting time to enjoy what you’ve worked so hard to earn. Planning for what you’ll need and protecting those savings can help ensure a comfortable future.

Ginny Page and Elizabeth Lanning, extraordinarily experienced supporting violinists, are stepping into the spotlight for a special concert at the Estes Park Senior Citizens Center (EPSCC).

They good-naturedly stated they will confidently perform two challenging Telemann sonatas, along with some lighter pieces—an ambitious and exciting endeavor for musicians more accustomed to ensemble roles than solo performances. When asked for a photograph, in their typical out-of-thelimelight style, only a selfie was provided! Rest assured they are as talented as they are modest, so mark your calendar to attend their performance on Tuesday, June 17 from 12:00 to 1:00 at the EPSCC, 1760 Olympian Ln. Ginny Page has played with the Oratorio Orchestra since 2000, after performing with the Southwest Michigan Symphony. She plays a 2005 Canadianmade violin, one of three purchased with fellow musicians who have since moved on. Ginny remains active in the community through volunteering. She enjoys hiking and following sports. As a cat mom, mother, and grandmother, she balances outdoor activities with time at home.

Elizabeth Lanning has played with the

Oratorio Society since 2023 and performs with the Loveland Orchestra.

Before moving to Estes Park and joining RE/MAX Mountain Brokers, she spent six years with the Pikes Peak Philharmonic and taught high school English and Theater for 32 years. A seasoned theater director and actor, she was active in several Colorado Springs community theaters. Now semi-retired, Elizabeth also teaches yoga at Estes Park Yoga and enjoys hiking, music, reading, and time with family and friends.

Attendees are welcome to eat lunch while attending the concert. Bring your own lunch or pre-purchase a hot meal by ordering the day before. The meal on Tuesday will be stuffed meatloaf (with broccoli, bacon, and cheese), mashed potatoes, gravy and vegetables.

Earlier this year, a father in the Estes Valley quietly reached out to EVICS Family Resource Center. After months of struggling with depression in silence, he confided that he felt like he was “failing as a parent” and didn’t know where to turn. Language barriers, work pressure, and the stigma surrounding men seeking help had kept him isolated and overwhelmed.

Through EVICS’ bilingual counseling program, he began weekly sessions with a licensed therapist. For the first time, he was able to express himself freely—without needing to translate his thoughts or explain his cultural background. He later shared that the sessions “lifted a weight” he had been carrying for years.

His experience is just one example of the critical need for accessible, culturally responsive mental health care in our mountain community.

From January to May 2025, EVICS has provided 187 hours of bilingual counseling to 24 individuals, with a near-equal distribution of male and female participants. The program was developed after EVICS observed a sharp rise in the number of Spanishspeaking residents seeking support. A

community survey confirmed the need, revealing that many families— especially those navigating grief, trauma, or parenting stress—were falling through the cracks due to language and cultural barriers.

“While these sessions are primarily offered in Spanish, they are not exclusive,” said Rut Miller, Executive Director of EVICS. “This is about filling critical gaps in access—not duplicating services, but strengthening the mental health network in Estes Park so no one is left out.”

Counseling sessions are held every Friday at EVICS and are offered at no cost to participants, thanks to the generosity of donors and community partners. Services are coordinated with other local providers to ensure families receive wraparound support when needed.

EVICS remains committed to serving all families with compassion and cultural understanding. The organization believes that no one in our community should have to struggle alone.

Meet Pam Dickinson – Mrs. Rooftop Rodeo Contestant

Estes Park resident Pam Dickinson has joined this year’s Mrs. Rooftop Rodeo competition with a heartfelt mission: to raise money for cancer screening access for under- and uninsured residents of the Estes Valley.

Over the last 15 years, Pam and her husband, Scott, have experienced the heartbreak of watching cancer take the lives of friends and family members. “The hardest thing I’ve had to watch,” Pam shared, “was my daughter-in-law lose her mother to breast cancer while she was still in college. No one can ever replace someone’s mother, but I’ve done my best to step in and support her through life’s milestones. Watching someone you love suffer such a loss changes you.”

That loss, along with many others, has inspired Pam to take action.

She’s now pouring her energy into supporting the Cancer Screening Assistance Fund managed by the Estes Park Health Foundation. This fund ensures that residents of the Estes Valley can access early detection services like mammograms, colonoscopies, and lung scans—re-

gardless of insurance or income status.

“The goal is simple,” Pam said. “Save lives and prevent the kind of heartache so many of us know too well.

Meet Kayla Lynott – Mrs. Rooftop Rodeo Contestant

Estes Park’s very own Kayla Lynott, hairstylist, nail technician, and proud small business owner, has joined the 2025 Mrs. Rooftop Rodeo campaign with a powerful mission: to raise funds that will provide lifesaving cancer screenings for underand uninsured residents of the Estes Valley.

Kayla has called Estes Park home for the past 17 years and has been lifting spirits in the community salon chair for 14 of them. In October 2023, she fulfilled a lifelong dream by opening her own salon, deepening her roots in the town she calls “the most beautiful place on earth.”

EPH Assists EPHS Senior With Content For National Competition

In the fall of 2024, Estes Park High School senior Jerilyn Fisher visited Estes Park Health to capture images of health care workers performing their roles and responsibilities. The photos were part of a health career photography competition for HOSA, formerly known as Health Occupations Students of America, an organization that empowers students pursuing health and biomedical professions through education, collaboration and experience.

Fisher, who served as president of the EPHS chapter of HOSA during her senior year, is interested in pursuing a career in neuropsychology.

In April, EPH learned Fisher placed in the top ten at the Colorado competition with the images she photographed at the hospital in the fall. Reaching that level at the state contest meant Fisher

would represent Colorado at the national competition, which takes place June 18 to 21 in Nashville, Tenn.

Fisher returned to EPH last month to photograph three new medical professionals in action for the next round of the competition. She learned about and photographed staff in the radiology, med-surg and MRI departments for her next set of photo entries.

“I loved the MRI room today,” said Fisher while at EPH in May. “It aligns with what I want to do with neuropsychology, and I think MRI gives us a different aspect to see our anatomy.”

Fisher, who graduated from EPHS last month, will attend the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs this fall to pursue a major in psychology.

The Lord has blessed my family and me with the opportunity to work in Estes Park! My name is Ken Walters. I am the new preacher at Estes Park Church of Christ. I am thrilled about the opportunities for my family and me as we settle into the community.

We are eager to embark on this new journey and look forward to meeting you all.

As we settle into this beautiful town, I've been reflecting on the path God has laid before me and the experiences that have prepared me for this new season of ministry. Over the past 15 years, I have served in South Texas ministry roles, gaining valuable experience in evangelism outreach and teaching topic-specific bible classes, such as a chronological study of the four Gospels and "How We Got the Bible" at the local public library. These experiences have equipped me to grow every person's relationship with Christ Jesus and encourage a better understanding of His word, the Bible.

Throughout my career as a preacher and teacher of the gospel, I have continually focused on my ability to communicate the word of God effectively both in and outside the church build-

ing. It involved delivering sermons that educate and encourage the hearers "...to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called (Ephesians 4:1)." My Bible classes focused on the big picture of the Bible by tying in a place and time to the events and archaeological evidence to show them as actual historical events, not just Sunday School stories.

In conclusion, I am eager to bring my experience, strengths, and enthusiasm to Estes Park. As my family and I begin this new chapter, we do so with open hearts and a strong desire to serve. We are particularly eager to form relationships within the church and community and to walk alongside each of you as we grow together in faith, fellowship, and love. May the Lord give us strength and wisdom as we walk this new journey together.

Also, a meet-and-greet fellowship will be held on Sunday, June 22nd, at the Estes Park Church of Christ on Fish Creek Road starting at 9:30 a.m. We eagerly look forward to this event, where we can meet and encourage each other and the community. We hope to see you there!

Estes Park Woman’s Club Ends Its Year With Final Meeting And A New Executive Board

On May 14, The Estes Park Woman’s Club held its final meeting of the year at Twin Owls Restaurant. Along with celebrating former presidents, new member and daughter of former president, Loretta DeWitt, Caroline Somervllle was initiated. Ingrid Drouin and Sherry Unruh reminded every one of the upcoming Trunk Treasures Sale on Saturday, July 26 at Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church. The organization is looking forward to raising the money needed to continue their philanthropic support which focuses on Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park Schools, the Estes Valley Library, the Town of Estes Park and other local entities. They have been supporting these organizations for 113 years.

The club is the oldest philanthropic organization in Estes Park. The new meeting year starts in September and new members are always welcome.

The final act of the meeting was to install the new Executive Board members

and determine the supporting committees.

Estes Park Woman’s Club Demonstrates Support For Rocky Mountain National Park Rangers And Volunteers

In classic form, the Estes Park Woman’s Club once again showed its on-going support of Rocky Mountain National Park by serving up cookies and smiles at the Park’s Orientation Day on June 4 at Park Headquarters.

The Woman’s Club leant a helping hand to Rocky Mountain National Park on its opening day in 1915, then again at the Hundred Year Celebration in 2015 and again today as park employees undertake a busy visitor season. Dressed in 1915 style dresses and fancy Woman’s Club hats, Marlene Borneman, Caroline Somerville, Pam Leitner, Ingrid Drouin, Pat Smith, Carla Spreng-Webb, Kathy Littlejohn, Stacey Harding, Linda Remigio and Sherry Unruh served up over 200 cookies baked by Woman’s Club

members Amanda Luchsinger, Fran McKinney, Susan Robertson, Kay Boyle and Delphine Casey.

Under Marlene Borneman’s supervision, the park staff once again experienced the role the Estes Park Woman’s Club has played for 113 years. In conjunction with The Rocky Mountain Conservancy (who served ice cream) and the National Park, the Woman’s Club made new friends and treated the new volunteers and rangers to the hospitality that is their signature in the community. At the conclusion of the event, the club’s members took a reminiscent picture of the 1915 ladies sitting on a rock that is now the cover for Harriet Rose’s Burgess’s book, Then The Women Took Over, A Hundred Years of the Estes Park Woman’s Club.

Glen Haven Volunteer Fire Department Pancake Breakfast On July 19th SAVE the DATE for the annual Glen Haven Volunteer Fire Department Pancake Breakfast on July 19th! The Glen Haven Fire Department is funded solely through donations. Along with the Duck Race, our Pancake Breakfast is our main source of income.

The Glen Haven Area Volunteer Fire Department is a critical part of the emergency response community throughout southern Larimer County.

The Department works closely with the Colorado State Patrol, Larimer County Sheriff 's Department, Larimer County Emergency Services, the U.S. Forest Service, Rocky Mountain National Park, the Estes Valley Fire Protection District, Loveland Rural Fire Protection District, Estes Park Ambulance Service and other agencies to continue to provide emergency response to the Glen Haven community and the entire Estes Valley.

As you are aware, fire danger is not just seasonal, but a year-round concern. Our all-volunteer fire department

Save The Date: Estes Recycles Day, Saturday, August 9th The next annual Estes Recycles Day has been scheduled for Saturday August 9 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Events Complex Main Parking.

The League of Women Voters Community Recycling Committee and the Rotary Club organize this entirely volunteer-run event with broad support and participation from across the community. The Town of Estes Park is again providing space for the event.

Household recyclers and local small businesses can bring accepted items for proper disposal. There will be limits on the number of large items we can accept; more details are at www.estesrecycles.org.

The three main stations are paper shredding, electronics and scrap metal.

We will also accept bike tires and bike tubes, microwaves and smoke detectors. No light bulbs can be accepted.

For the first time this year the Rotary Club will collect walkers, crutches, and wheelchairs for its Crutches for Africa project alongside the shredding station.

Financial support for operations and for electronics recycling is made possible through the generosity of the following: Town of Estes Park (Community Initiative Grant), Premier Members Credit Union, Sunrise Rotary Club and the Village Thrift Shop.

We are seeking volunteers ages 18 and older to assist on Saturday morning.

Visit Historic Bunce School In Nearby Allenspark

The Historic Bunce School and Museum in Allenspark is open for free Saturday tours this summer.

The one-room school, built in 1888, will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the following Saturdays: June 21, July 5, July 19, Aug. 2 (the day of the Guild's Annual Bazaar), Aug. 16, Aug. 30 and Sept. 20 (the day of the Guild's Fall Festival).

The site is located a short

walk from the Hilltop Guild's Kelley House. Bunce School is owned by and was restored by Hilltop Guild members in 1996.

The school holds county, state and national historic designations.

The Guild continues to maintain the school and grounds as a museum reflecting the period 1888 to 1945.

Bunce School is located four miles south of Allenspark just off Highway 7 on Bunce School Road.

“Tuesdays at 2” Bible Study – Book Of Judges By: Bishop Owen Williams, St. Francis Anglican Church

In the Book of Judges: The last verse of the last chapter states, “In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.”

This brief verse may resonate with many people these days. It certainly does for me. Especially when I see rioting in the streets and freeways of Los Angeles. I served as Priest-inCharge of a Parish Church only five miles from downtown L.A., where the riots began last weekend.

“Everyone did what right in his own eyes.”

What kind of moral compass makes that kind of violence “right” in anyone’s eyes? I admit that Los Angeles and the surrounding area has had a certain “laissez-faire” (or “Let it be…”) attitude toward personal choice and action. But, what I have been witnessing saddens me greatly. It was sad enough when, a few months ago, I watched a house I lived in for two years, above the Pacific Coast Highway, burn to the ground. However, wildfire is very different from anarchy and riot.

I have learned through the years that

we can sometimes put into perspective the “Big Picture” of what God’s plan is in all this. And, it may be just a coincidence that we decided to do our Summer Bible Study and Discussion on the Book of Judges. There are plenty of “interesting” Bible stories, such as the saga of “Samson & Delilah.” But it also shows, to quote the Venerable Bede, “It is only by persistent practice of virtue that we are able to win the struggles of Spiritual life.”

Working Together To Help Those In Need

There are hundreds of people coming into town, and most of them are here on vacation having the time of their life. But, there are a few who come here looking for a safe place to lay their head at night. Crossroads is focused on loving our neighbors no matter who they are, where they’ve come from or what their current level of need is. We meet people where they are with no strings attached, and together we determine the best path forward for individual and family. Our immediate response involves giving hungry people enough food for a couple days. From there, our Case Manager, Eva Banuelos, and Client Advocate, Jess Borries, dive into a comprehensive assessment to find out what an individual’s current reality looks like and what our best stewardship options are as we move forward with assistance. Compassion is a value we fully embrace as we interact with people who are experiencing a challenging season in life. In this very moment, and for the past 43 years, we have served as the primary nonprofit in town where the police, businesses, town government officials, community leaders, churches, and partnering organizations send people who need help with basic human services. Some people come with a “shut-off ” notice from the town’s electric service, and we step in to help with a one-time assist, and generally never see them again.

Whereas, others seem to find themselves in need more often, and this is where we help guide people into a better path of spending, budgeting, and/or creating a healthy support group that will be in their corner when tough times come around. Crossroads is truly blessed to serve our neighbors with a variety of skills and expertise given through our paid staff, volunteers and board members.

During the summer, you are probably aware that we have people experiencing homelessness. You might see them pushing a shopping cart, sleeping on park benches, asking for money at the corners, or just walking the sidewalks.

Crossroads doesn’t operate a homeless shelter, but we are the ones in town to engage with people who are living out-

doors without any means to secure permanent housing. At times, we receive phone calls from concerned citizens regarding individuals they have observed. They are generally concerned about the individual’s condition, and are interested in how we’re helping them. For your situational awareness, Crossroads will address any immediate issues related to people experiencing homelessness, but a majority of services and resources for getting people rehoused are located in Loveland, Fort Collins, and Boulder. Since February, we have begun a mobile outreach program to assist the homeless, and one of our services is providing a ride down the hill to a variety of places.

As with any of us, we have the freedom to choose our next step, and for some, the direction they choose is not what we might choose, but out of love and dignity for the person, we choose to not “strong-arm” anyone into making decisions. Living on the streets without any possessions, security, stability, safety or basic necessities is quite daunting for someone to experience.

And for some individuals, they might be struggling with a mental health disorder, or a traumatic experience from their past that has caused them to distrust people. I share all of this, because I want you to know that if you ever come across someone that you feel is experiencing homelessness, and their need is beyond what you feel comfortable meeting yourself, then please send them to Crossroads. Better yet, give me a call at 970-599-4200, and one of our staff members will respond immediately to offer assistance. The good samaritan found the person in need, but he realized it was beyond his abilities to offer long-term care, so he reached out to the inn keeper to make sure the injured person received the best care possible. We want to partner with you to make our town a place where no one finds themselves in a challenging season alone. Let’s work together to make sure everyone feels the love and care of their neighbors! Jack Whitt Jack Barclay Whitt, age 84, passed away on April 22, 2025.

Jack was born to Charles "Jack" Whitt and Virginia (Brummett) Lancaster on December 31, 1940.

Jack grew up in Estes Park, Colorado and graduated from Estes Park High School. He went on to graduate from the University of Colorado-Boulder. Jack lived all of his adult years in Denver where he was the Chief Financial Officer for a geological company. In later years, he spent his winters in Arizona.

Jack loved competing for many years in league volleyball. He was an avid golfer. He sang in a church choir and very recently was complimented on his great singing voice. He was an

active participant in The Alexander Foundation where he served as treasurer.

Jack was a quiet man with a hearty laugh. He enjoyed celebrating birthdays with friends and family. He made wherever he lived lovely. He enjoyed high school reunions with his classmates. He enjoyed being with his cousins for family reunions in Missouri.

With no fanfare, Jack privately helped people. He was a good man.

He is survived by friends and cousins who love Jack. Jack chose cremation and his ashes are buried in Estes Park through the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies.

Rest in peace, Jack.

John Coker John Paul Coker, 73, passed away June 4, 2025 in Fort Collins, CO. Formerly of Estes Park, John worked as a mold cutter at Michael Ricker Studio and worked many years as a painter at the YMCA of the Rockies.

John enjoyed woodcarving, photography, fly-fishing and was a great chef and grill master.

John will be greatly missed by his family and friends who will especially miss his kind heart and wonderful sense of humor.

John is survived by his son, Christian Coker and two stepchildren, Michael B. Keller and Jayne B. Keller-Parker.

No services are planned at this time.

Michael Lee Bryson Michael Lee Bryson, born on December 12, 1950, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, was called to his eternal home on May 24, 2025, in Estes Park after feeling short of breath and rushed to the hospital. He was the beloved son of Donald V. and Pauline P. (Storey) Bryson.

Mike, as he was affectionately known, was a shining light in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. His journey on this earth was one marked by love, humor, and curiosity. His passing has left a void in the hearts of his family, friends, and many more. We please ask that you remember him not for the way his life ended, but for the way it was lived, and for the profound impact it had on the lives of those who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Mike grew up in north Denver and graduated from Ranum High School in 1969 where he was the starting center on the football team that went to the state semi-finals. He then earned a chemistry degree from Graceland University in Iowa, after which he worked primarily in quality control for various companies specializing in pharmaceuticals, plastics and building materials. His career culminated in a focus on roofing shingle product quality and development where he earned numerous patents and became an expert witness for product liability litigations. Mike was always curious about how things worked and blended that trait into a successful career.

Mike married the love of his life Donna Hamblin in Odessa, Missouri on August 31, 1974. They raised their children in Missouri, Texas and Alabama, and chose to retire in Estes Park in 2015. They would have celebrated 52 years of marriage this Au-

gust.

Mike was a generous man and gave his time to various causes such as post-hurricane property damage inspections. After retirement to Estes Park, he enjoyed volunteering as an Ambassador at the Estes Park Visitor Center, coordinating the Newcomer’s Club Men’s Breakfast activity, as a counselor for the free AARP TaxAide service at the Estes Valley Library, and especially as a docent at MacGregor Ranch. The common theme here is that Mike never met a stranger. He treated every new acquaintance like a friend and was curious to learn everything he could about them. He liked to travel and hike but mostly enjoyed playing golf with his buddies. He will be missed and remembered for his friendliness, kindness and infectious laughter.

Mike is survived by his wife Donna, son Benjamin (spouse Teresa Kelley) of Birmingham, AL, daughter Wendi, grandsons Russell Lee and Nickolaus Ryan Bryson, brother Donald L. Bryson (spouse Kathy), all of Estes Park, nephew Aaron Bryson, niece Amy Bryson, and stepmother Lorraine Bryson, plus numerous cousins. Additionally, he is survived by nieces Mandy (Carlile) Forrest and Hillary (Hamblin) Graham, and nephew Harry Robert Hamblin, all of Missouri.

A celebration of Mike’s life is being planned for August to give all who loved him an opportunity to be present, with smaller gatherings in Missouri and Council Bluffs, Iowa. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in Mike’s name to either the MacGregor Ranch (www.macgregorranch.org/donate) or Crossroads (www.crossroadsep.org/donate) in Estes Park.
