When the opportunity presents itself, you run towards it – that’s one thing I always emphasize to myself. Since the beginning of my journey to become a doctor, many said to only focus and excel in academics. However, I have always had my own goals and aspirations; although I do concede that academics are important, I want to use my time as a medical student to explore the limitless potentials in me and benefit others through it. Hence, here I am! My name is Ester Melati Hasiana Pasaribu, a second year medical student, and I’m proud to say that I’m one of the candidates for the next National Exchange Officer for Outgoing 2023/2024.
For as long as I can remember, I've always been interested in learning about other countries' health-care systems. Blessed with the experience of visiting a hospital in another country, it sowed seeds of interest in how the healthcare system operates. It also made me realize the importance of understanding how other countries’ healthcare systems work, especially as medical students, because we are the ones who can improve health outcomes and ameliorate healthcare systems. Although initially, I believed that this type of knowledge can only be attained through classroom learning, I soon realized how wrong I was.
SCOPE opened my eyes to the fact that not all things that I could do to improve this nation’s health came exclusively from my educational pursuit. It’s almost been two years since I joined SCOPE as a member and was elected as the LEO Out in CIMSA UNAIR It has been an absolute pleasure for me to work with all the great people I’ve met during my tenure as a LEO Out, and I have gained extensive experiences as well as irreplaceable memories I have never imagined that my life as a medical student would be as colorful as now, and I have CIMSA to thank for that.
My first expectations of CIMSA greatly contrasted the ones I have now, as I did not expect anything to come out from my experiences in SCOPE, thinking it would be just an uneventful ride. However, far from my initial expectations, SCOPE has given me so much more than what I could ever imagine. SCOPE has become my safe place; allowing me to develop my skills and capabilities, providing me with a supportive environment throughout my time in medical school. I have also gained extensive insight into health systems and various other topics I wouldn’t have been able to obtain by simply attending classes on a daily basis.
The aforementioned reasons are what fuels me to candidate myself as NEO Out. Inline with CIMSA's tagline, Empowering Medical Students Improving Nation's Health, I believe that by taking this position, I will be able to create opportunities for other medical students to gain exposure to diverse healthcare systems and cultures, which can contribute to their personal and professional development and also advancements in healthcare within this nation. Although my time as a local LEO Out has taught me that this journey will be filled with ups and downs, a seesaw full of highs and lows, the prospect of improving myself and learning so many new things to ultimately benefit my fellow medical students give me the strength and motivation to become a candidate. I hope that I am able to make people understand and feel firsthand the affinity I have for SCOPE, and for CIMSA, and that’s why I’m here taking it one step further and grabbing this opportunity to become the next leader for SCOPE!
