South Street Arch 2122 De Santis
Spring 2025 This project focused on building a non-profit space on an empty and underutilized lot in a specific Philadelphia neighborhood. When I visited the empty lot between 1519 -1525 in South Street, I noticed a residential strip of typical Philadelphia row houses behind a commercial street. After doing the site map and researching the community, I learned that there were a few grocery stores in the vicinity. The two nonprofits I chose for this space are the Community Grocer and the Philadelphia Horticultural Society. My building project brings these two related non-profits together, allowing them to have a deeper impact on the community. For example, the Community Grocer can work with PHS to distribute food grown on-site to their clients. In turn, PHS can use the rooftop garden to teach residents how to farm in an urban space. Together, they would give the community a place for fresh food and a place to learn. Location: South Street Philadelphia Area: 4,254sq-ft Typology: Community Grocer & Center
