’m always delighted to welcome you to our Summer School edition of Arco, but this year I’m doubly delighted! Not only are we returning to a real live conference this year, after having to postpone last year’s event, but we are - thanks to considerable demand from our members - welcoming back four hugely popular presenters from Summer Schools past.

I know that a large number of our members will be very excited to work again with the wonderful Joannes, May (violin) and Erwin (cello), from the USA, after their outstanding presentations here two years ago. This year they have more time to complete their programme, enough, in fact, to allow you, if you wish, to complete the Level 1 Endorsement in their Paul Rolland Pedagogy programme. Details can be found elsewhere in this magazine and on the website.

I’m equally happy to welcome back Bojan Cvetrežnik, from Slovenia, to the U.K. He was with us three years ago, and brought us his unique skills as a formidable player of more than just Balkan folk music, coupled with a fully comprehensive approach to teaching. He is very happy to work with all the string instruments.

The Nannie Jamieson Nutshell Fund was launched

by Yehudi Menuhin in 1990 to honour the memory of Nannie Jamieson who was the first Organising The fourth very popular returnee is Henry Fagg, a superb Alexander teacher who is very much at ease working with large groups. His sessions are to be called “Wake up to natural movement”, and from his previous visit here I’m really looking forward to starting the day being gently stretched - in a good way!

We have four in-house ESTA people giving single presentations. Our Head of ESTA Education, Richard Crozier, is going to speak on forming a curriculum. Fear not!

With Richard’s sense of humour you can be assured of a gentle and witty approach to a subject we should all really be thinking about a lot more.

Steve Bingham, our Editor in Chief, Membership Secretary and all round ESTA renaissance man will be leading our opening session - an ensemble/ice-breaking play-through of new and/or favourite pieces of string group repertoire. Some will be chosen by him and some by you.

Kadie Kanneh-Mason joined the ESTA Council last year, and is heading up for us a Working Party to look at diversity, in response to the Black Lives Matter movement which took off this year. She will be leading a session addressing this important issue. As the mother of the seven astonishing Kanneh-Mason children, she will have plenty to say about how she 4

encouraged them all to perform to their extraordinary high standards, while having to confront, no doubt, many examples of prejudice and discrimination.

Nicole Wilson also joined Council last year and will be talking about how to teach online, something I suspect we have all found ourselves doing since the pandemic arrived. As the founder and MD of MusicalOrbit, which has been delivering online lessons for the past six years, she will know all the tricks of the trade, and certainly all the pitfalls!

Lastly, but definitely not least, we are delighted to welcome back our sponsors, who will be joining us on Tuesday, August 10. Please make sure you take this opportunity to meet them. Who knows, you might pick up a bargain, or discover a new piece of music, or accessory.

Paul Rolland String Pedagogy

T

he Rolland pedagogy experts will be back in 2021! Joanne Erwin and Joanne May will present Rolland’s pedagogical ideas from the basics of motion to specifics of left and right hand techniques, from beginner pedagogy to advanced remedial strategies.

Morning and afternoon sessions will be unique and on different topics, with the two clinicians collaborating by teaching together for most of the sessions. There will also be some special separate upper/lower string sessions to address issues specific to the instruments.

What is Paul Rolland String Pedagogy?

The ground-breaking string pedagogy of Paul Rolland is renowned worldwide for its universal application to all levels of string-playing, all ages of players and teachers, and all string repertoire. Balanced movements, free from excessive tension, not only allow string players to gain a higher level of musical expression, but also learn advanced skills from the start of the learning process. Incorporating Rolland’s “actions” into teaching strings increases the teacher’s ability to be successful in their instruction and in modelling concepts, while also giving the student a clear and accessible vehicle for understanding and executing their movements and skills at the highest level possible. Healthy movements create the best sound, and Paul Rolland String Pedagogy allows players to perform at their highest potential while not sacrificing their body to pain or injury.

What is the Paul Rolland String Pedagogy Certification Program?

Certification consists of four levels. A daily schedule of an endorsement level will consist of sessions of topics in Rolland pedagogy from his publication ‘The Teaching of Action in String Playing’, as well as the specific application of his actions to private studio teaching, group and orchestral instruction, and all levels of performance. After each level is completed, an Endorsement is received for that level.

This year they are also offering the Level 1 Endorsement in Paul Rolland Pedagogy program. It carries an extra cost of $100 and will involve some extra classes during the week. If you are interested in finding out more please email sheila@estastrings.org.uk

Joanne May Joanne May is Assistant Professor of Music and director of the Philharmonic Orchestra, chair of the string department, and music education instructor at Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Illinois. During her tenure at Elmhurst College she founded the annual Elmhurst College World Music Festival, assisted in writing the course String Improvisation for Educators, and helped to add four new string faculty members to the department.

incorporated Rolland pedagogy into all areas of her teaching. She has presented on Rolland techniques at several national and international conferences, and is codirector of the annual University of Illinois Paul Rolland String Pedagogy Workshop.

She has received various awards for teaching, including the Mary Hoffman Award for Teaching Excellence by Illinois Music Educators Association, Educator of the Year and Distinguished Service Award from the Illinois American String Teacher’s Association, and Teacher Recognition Award for the Presidential Scholar Program in Washington, D.C. by the U.S. Department of Education.

She is immediate past national orchestra council chair of the National Association for Music Education.

She has conducted the Elmhurst College Philharmonic for performances at the Illinois Music Education Conference and in Millennium Park for the Chicago World Music Festival, and she developed annual performance tours for the orchestra in several states.

Having recently retired from Oberlin Conservatory she is Professor Emerita of Music Education, earned her Bachelor’s (magna cum laude) and Master’s degree in Music Education at University of Illinois.

She has maintained a private cello studio throughout her career in traditional and Suzuki approaches. At Oberlin she taught String Methods, Conducting and String Pedagogy with an outreach project patterned after Rolland’s.

She had the pleasure of working in the Rolland String Project upon completion of his String Pedagogy course. In addition she attended summer ASTA workshops in Europe with Rolland and Fischbach and Young.

After teaching strings in public schools in Illinois and Texas she went on to earn her Ph.D. in String Pedagogy at University

In our Shropshire workshop, the ingredients for Mr Hider’s original recipes are carefully heated and mixed by hand, and when molten, the rosin mix is transferred to small curing urns where the waxes and resins are boiled to remove impurities. Wake up to Natural Movement!

Underlying everything we do is the potential for natural movement. Stray from natural movement and our actions get harder, more tense. Approach it, and movement becomes easier and free-flowing.

Henry has spent over a decade helping musicians of all ages discover an easy, balanced and pain-free approach to their music-making. He has taught at various institutions such as the Royal College of Music, the Arts Educational Schools and Uppingham School, and has given workshops in the UK and abroad.

These morning sessions are suitable for everyone.

On one level, you’ll find the sessions a gentle, fun and energising warm-up for the day ahead. You won’t need your instrument or notepad!

Now based in Bristol, he runs the Alexander Technique programme at Junior Trinity Conservatoire of Music in Greenwich, London.

On another level, you’ll discover principles behind natural movement. Activities we explore together will guide you to experience, sense and ‘get’ these principles in the body, without an over-emphasis on theory. Our bodies have learned over millions of years to deal effectively with the external and internal forces acting on them - all we need to do is reconnect.

He has also published several papers on the science and practice of the Alexander Technique.

Daily Menu My daily presentations for the year 2021 will focus on the repertoire that we use for our students.

Carefully chosen tunes are the result of long-term investigations, travelling, collecting tunes, trying them out with our students and at the workshops mostly around Slovenian public schools.

It was a great experience for me, how the children react to a rehearsal with maestro Marcel Ramba in the Transylvanian gypsy village Beica de Jos looks like. A group of mixed children, Romanian and Roma were practicing exercises with a metronome (in their case with rhythm machine and chords on the cheap keyboard) for 20 minutes, before they jumped to the repertoire.

Basic skills and warming up are good, independent from the style of music that we want to focus on and culture environment we grew up in. I will split the time of my workshops in a similar way.

Starter

In the last decade, my focus has been deeply into education. I believe that teaching others should go hand-in-hand with my own personal connection with the instrument and facing problems through my performing. It is so easy to put the focus in the wrong place if there is a lack of constant personal progress by the teacher.

I don’t like to focus on the past, but I have to write a CV from time to time, which is not my favourite job.

So: I studied viola in Ljubljana, Klagenfurt and Berlin, and attended many courses. My viola hero in classical music was and still is Kim Kashkashian. I initiated many projects that reflect equality of different musical styles, including the ‘Society for ONE music’, the education platform ‘Godalkanje’, the Symbolic Orchestra.

In the classical world I worked as a principal viola player in the Slovenian National Opera. I won a first prize in the Slovenian chamber music competition TEMSIG with a string trio. I am one of the founders of the BBC award-winning group Terrafolk, that produced a new programme ‘Terra POP’ in 2020. I also worked as a solo violinist in the famous Canadian theatre ‘Cirque du Soleil’. I worked as a teacher of classical viola and chamber music at the Conservatory of Music in Maribor, and as a mentor for jazz improvisation at the Music Academy in Ljubljana.

Let me tell you a story: There were 100 students applying to study with my Scandinavian colleague - and this teacher took only 3 each year into his class. I think – what a quality selection this might be! I only work with more or less the same students, some of them from the very beginning. One of them decided to try out my approach after she twice failed the entrance exams for a conservatory. Another was ‘not perspective’ (her teacher’s words) at the public music school. The third experiences massive problems with reading materials.

The young bass player has lots of talent, but his teacher (me) is not a double bass player. This is the basis of the teenage group ‘Slovenian Fiddle Gang’ that performed concerts in 6 countries in 2019, and attracted so much attention from our profession. Super enthusiastic young people! I encourage them to learn also from others - by travelling, attending camps, online... They have become so advanced in certain styles that I am lucky to steal knowledge back from them. A new group of younger enthusiasts is right behind them and just about to catch up with The Gang...

I cooperate with many bowed string instrument experts in certain musical styles from all over Europe. I used to lead projects with the Jean Philharmonic Orchestra and the Slovenian National Radio Symphony Orchestra. I have also composed original music for those orchestras, as well as for the Symbolic Orchestra and for smaller line-ups. I have toured in most European countries.

DAILY MENU: August 9-13 11.30-1pm

For a starter we will enjoy a series of short warming up exercises. Scales or arpeggios needed for the repertoire will prepare the tonal environment and increase the imagination of our fingerboard’s mapping. We will pay special attention to technical issues that are commonly discussed in the following tunes.

Main Dish For the main dish we will learn tunes, accompaniments, sometimes second voices (harmony) with the focus on the sound articulation needed for a particular style. We will perform those tunes at the ‘Fiddle Gang Jam’ on the last evening.

Dessert For a desert we will all leave the workshop happy and have good food together.

Developing a Curriculum Richard Crozier, ESTA Education’s Director of Academic Studies, takes a gentle look at the need for a curriculum and how to go about creating and developing one. This will include a look at some of the terminology, such as: curriculum; syllabus; scheme of work; tutor book; teaching method etc., and at what you can do to maximise the effectiveness and impact of your teaching, through making some simple changes to the way you approach both learning and teaching.

It’s easy to start by following a particular tutor or method book and then to follow an exam syllabus which can very easily become a curriculum substitute. This route keeps both teacher and learners busy in lessons, but simply filling up time with interesting activities, no matter how purposeful they seem, may not be as powerful as engaging with the development of a curriculum to ensure that the learners’ experience is as broad as it should be.

Violin professor at the Royal Academy of Music and freelance principal violinist Nicole Wilson leads us in a session in how to deliver your best online lesson. We’ve all been exploring the mysterious world of online music lessons in the last year, some of us with more success than others!

Nicole’s 6 years experience in online teaching has given her a headstart in discovering best practice and computer setup for music lessons. From audio and video set up to communication and handy apps, she will be demonstrating teaching techniques and taking questions from ESTA members about how to make online lessons stress free, effective and enjoyable!

Nicole Wilson A student of Chetham’s School of Music and a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music, Nicole joined the first violins of the London Symphony Orchestra in 1999 and then became a Principal Violinist at English National Opera in 2008.

Currently professor of violin at the Royal Academy of Music and Eton College, Nicole is a freelance principal violinist with orchestras throughout the UK. She has worked as an orchestral fixer for TV and film, as a TV and Radio presenter for the BBC and Classic FM Radio and as a concert presenter.

In 2014 Nicole founded Musical Orbit, a website which connected top professionals in the classical music world with music students of all ages around the globe who wanted to learn with them, whether in person or online. Exploring the online music teaching world has helped her work out how to make it as accessible and effective as possible for everyone to access the right kind of music teaching for them.

At the ESTA Summer School this year she will be talking about her experiences with online teaching and sharing best practice and set up advice.

Richard Crozier

MA BAHons PGCE FRSA (ESTA) worked on another new qualification, the ESTA PG Cert (string teaching) which launched in May 2017.

Richard has been involved with a range of organisations in the UK associated with music education for the past forty years and has served on numerous committees and councils: as an elected member of the Music Education Council; regional Chair of the Schools Music Association, Chair of the Association for the Advancement of Teacher Education in Music, and Chair of the National Association of Music Educators.

He is a member of the Royal Society of Musicians and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and has worked as a course leader and mentor on numerous professional development courses for music teachers.

Richard is the author of Offbeat, a practical guide to pop and jazz for GCSE (Heinemann 1987); a co-author of Carousel, a primary music scheme (Ginn 1996); co-author, with Paul Harris of The Music Teacher’s Companion (ABRSM 2000); co-project director, with Nigel Scaife for the publication All Together! (ABRSM 2004); author of Musical Instruments for Children (Hamlyn 2007); co-author with Paul Harris of Improve your Piano Grades 1,2,3 (Faber 2014) and author of Learning a Musical Instrument, a guide for adult learners (Crowood 2016),

His work in music education included many years service as a classroom and instrumental teacher and latterly as an education adviser and as an Ofsted inspector from 1993 – 2005. Whilst working at the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) from 19952012 as Director of Professional Development, he was closely involved in the creation of two qualifications for music teachers: the Certificate of Teaching (CT ABRSM), accredited by the Open University, and ‘Rising with the Tide’, a management and leadership course for instrumental teachers, also accredited by the Open University and run by the Federation of Music Services.

Since leaving ABRSM, working for Creative & Cultural Skills on behalf of the Arts Council, he helped to draw up the Certificate for Music Educators (CME) and, in 2016, working with the European String Teachers Association

In 2012, Richard established his own limited company and clients have included: Artis, Arts Council of England, Creative & Cultural Skills, Faber Music, Incorporated Society of Musicians, Local Authority Music Hubs, Musicians’ Union and Trinity College, London. He continues to be actively involved in a wide variety of music and education activities, including performing, presenting, validation work related to the CME and publishing.

Steve Bingham Steve Bingham studied violin with Emmanuel Hurwitz, Sidney Griller and the Amadeus Quartet at the Royal Academy of Music from 1981 to 1985, where he won prizes for orchestral leading and string quartet playing.

In 1985 he formed the Bingham String Quartet, an ensemble which has become one of the foremost in the UK, with an enviable reputation for both classical and contemporary repertoire.

Phil Aird, Steve Bingham and Sheila Holdsworth will be there to answer your questions about ESTA (UK), the Summer School, or anything else string-related, and we’ll be playing a variety of string music - both familiar and unfamiliar - under the baton of Steve. There will be a chance for volunteers to conduct a movement or two, and if you have any pieces you’d like the group to try out - perhaps to see if they’d be suitable for your school or adult ensemble, or just because you’ve never had a chance to play them! - please either bring along a full set of parts or let Steve know in advance so that he can source a set (editor@estastrings.org.uk).

Steve’s debut solo CD “Duplicity” was released in November 2005, and has been played on several radio stations including BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM. His second solo CD, entitled “Ascension”, was released in December 2008 and has since been followed by “Touchable Dreams”, a CD of poetry and violin with Jeremy Harmer, “Third”, an eclectic mix of live-looped pieces, and in 2014 “The Persistence Of Vision”, which features the amazing Bach D minor Partita, and works

by Michael Nyman. Steve has also released many single tracks, and has an active YouTube channel featuring many weird and wonderful video creations!

The Quartet has recorded numerous CDs and has worked for radio and television both in the UK and as far afield as Australia. The group has toured in Europe, the Middle East and Australia and has worked with distinguished musicians such as Jack Brymer, Raphael Wallfisch, Michael Collins and David Campbell. The Quartet’s educational activities have included residencies at London’s South Bank Centre, for several UK festivals and at Radley College. The Quartet is also known for its many performances of new works by some of the best young composers in Britain.

This is a relaxed, fun session that we hope everyone will join in with. A great way to get to know everyone at the start of a week of exciting concerts and presentations!

As is the way with ESTA events, the whole atmosphere of the week was one of collaborative learning, sharing experiences, ideas and suggestions. It was heartening to find that we all face similar challenges in our teaching and it is no exaggeration to say that the 6 days I spent at the ESTA Summer School will have an influence on the rest of my teaching career.

Beyond performing on the violin Steve is a conductor of some repute, and currently conducts the Ely Sinfonia, Ad Hoc Sinfonia and City of Peterborough Symphony Orchestra, with guest appearances with several other ensembles. Steve is a committed teacher, and is Editor and Webmaster for the European String Teachers Association (UK). He coaches on many chamber music courses as well as giving regular school workshops to all age groups. He is particularly known for his communication skills and enthusiasm. Steve is also Joint CEO of PartPlay, an exciting online music service for chamber musicians https://www.partplay.co.uk/

Steve has appeared as guest leader with many orchestras including the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, English National Ballet and English Sinfonia. He has given solo recitals both in the UK and America and his concerto performances include works by Bach, Vivaldi, Bruch, Prokofiev, Mendelssohn and Sibelius, given in venues as prestigious as St. John’s Smith Square and the Royal Albert Hall.

Steve’s interests include ornithology, photography and Celtic knotwork.

In recent years Steve has developed his interest in improvisation, electronics and World music, collaborating with several notable musicians including guitarist Jason Carter and players such as Sanju Vishnu Sahai (tabla), Baluji Shivastrav (sitar) and Abdullah Ibrahim (piano). Steve also plays live with No-Man, the

Let’s Discuss Diversity Kadiatu Kanneh-Mason I will be taking an informal session, talking about my own experiences as the mother of seven children who have all been brought up with the learning of classical music as a central part of their education. All have learned stringed instruments (as well as piano) and had experience in the music industry.

My perspective is that all children benefit from music learning; all children have the potential to be performers and/or audience members, and all should be given the opportunity to develop their creative intelligence through music.

Kadiatu Kanneh-Mason Kadiatu KannehMason is a former lecturer in English at Birmingham University.

She completed a PhD and was Lecturer in English at The University of Sussex before moving to Birmingham University.

I’d like to discuss how state education has been limiting access to music education and our own experiences of that as a family over the years. How music is valued within our culture and society, and how that is affected by class, economics and ethnicity has a significant impact on music teaching -whether in schools, privately, or in the conservatoires- and on the music profession.

In 2018, Sheku was cello soloist at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and both Isata and Sheku have recorded successful albums on the Decca Classics label. The seven Kanneh-Masons launched their album, Carnival, in 2020. The family has been the subject of several documentaries, including the BBC Four documentary, Young Gifted and Classical: The Making of a Maestro, and the BBC One documentary, Imagine: This House is Full of Music.

Her book, ‘African Identities: Race, Nation and Culture in Ethnography, Pan-Africanism and Black Literatures’ was published in 1998. In 2020, she published House of Music: Raising the Kanneh-Masons.

The challenges and joys of introducing string instruments to children, and what we have learned along the way, or experimented with, can be a source of lively debate! I will look at the projected future of classical music and the kinds of instruments that children across the UK will have access to learning- or learning to a high standard- and the importance of both funding and inspiration to create diversity within classical music. These are all issues that come out of my personal position as mother to young people who place classical music (including string playing) as central to their lives.

Kadiatu is continuing to write and gives talks, interviews and lectures around the U.K. on diversity in classical music, music education, issues of race and inclusion, literature and parenting.

Kadiatu has seven children, all of whom are classical musicians: professional classical musicians, students at The Royal Academy of Music or The Royal College of Music, or members of the Junior and Primary Royal Academy of Music. Three of her children were BBC Young Musician Category Finalists, with Sheku, her third child winning the competition in 2016.

Joseph Roach

As the son of Chris King of Cardiff Violins, Dan grew up surrounded by stringed instruments, tools, music and musicians. He learnt the cello as a child, but what he loved most of all was fiddling around with tools, varnish and broken instruments, which he would painstakingly put together again with his father looking over his shoulder. It is no wonder then that he never faced the difficult decision of choosing a career: joining the family workshop was an obvious and natural choice for him.

Joseph Roach was born into a musical family, and started playing the violin at the age of four. It was from here that his passion for the instrument grew, developing an interest in the instruments themselves. At the age of 17 he was offered a part-time position at Cardiff Violins as a sales assistant. During this time he expanded his knowledge of the stringed instrument family with a keen interest in tonal adjustment for optimal soundproduction.

Together with Chris, he has worked on the sound production of hundreds of instruments.

Playing remained very important to Joe, and resulted in him enrolling at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama to study violin performance alongside his work at the shop.

Since his formal arrival at Cardiff violins in 2007, Dan has fitted up thousands of instruments and carried out all major repairs on violins, violas and cellos: neck grafts, peg bushes, sound-post crack patches, crack repairs, bass-bar cracks, wood work repairs, varnish work and more!

Upon graduating, he joined Cardiff Violins full time in the workshop, where he was rigourously trained and developed his skills in instrument repairs and set-ups.

Dan has built a reputation of his own and is now very much in demand, particularly for his excellent set-ups.

During the course, Dan and Joe will be available to carry out some minor work such as fitting Wittner fine tuning pegs, cleaning instruments, refitting strings, and there may be time to fit a bridge or two only, so please do book your work in as early as possible!

Iit gave me the chance to reflect on my practice and to learn a huge amount both from the distinguished tutors and from the talented delegates who attended the course.

Staff Biographies Philip Aird

Steve Bingham

After graduating from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Philip completed his Post Graduate studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London. Philip now enjoys a career in music with roles in senior management, performance and education. He is currently Chief Executive of European String Teachers Association, Director of Young Grittleton Chamber Music Courses, Joint Managing Director of PartPlay LTD and a member of the 1st violin section of the Royal Ballet Sinfonia.

Steve Bingham studied violin with Emmanuel Hurwitz, Sidney Griller and the Amadeus Quartet at the Royal Academy of Music from 1981 to 1985, where he won prizes for orchestral leading and string quartet playing. In 1985 he formed the Bingham String Quartet, an ensemble which has become one of the foremost in the UK, with an enviable reputation for both classical and contemporary repertoire. The Quartet has recorded numerous CDs and has worked for radio and television both in the UK and as far afield as Australia.

His playing career includes guesting with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Opera House, Welsh National Opera, English National Opera, BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Philip loves musicals and has played frequently in London’s West End for shows such as Chicago, Phantom of the Opera, Carousel, Showboat and West Side Story. His studio work includes numerous recordings for film and TV, including Harry Potter (The Half Blood Prince) and several drama series for the BBC and ITV.

Steve has appeared as guest leader with many orchestras including the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, English National Ballet and English Sinfonia. Steve is also a conductor of some repute and is currently principal conductor of Ely Sinfonia, the City of Peterborough Symphony Orchestra and the Ad Hoc Sinfonia.

In the field of world music Steve has collaborated with several notable musicians including guitarist Jason Carter and players such as Sanju Vishnu Sahai (tabla), Baluji Shivastrav (sitar) and Abdullah Ibrahim (piano).

Steve also plays live with No-Man, the progressive art-rock duo of Tim Bowness and Steven Wilson. In recent years Steve is much in demand providing violin backing for many different artists and styles, from folk singer-songwriter ballads to prog rock!

As an educator Philip has held teaching posts at several independent schools and also lectured at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. In collaboration with Thomastik-Infeld, Philip as co-founder of PartPlay has launched a free app and on-line resource for students wishing to study chamber music.

Steve is internationally renowned for his solo violin recitals, where he mixes acoustic pieces with livelooped electric violin arrangements in his own unique way. Steve has released four solo albums, “Duplicity”, “Ascension”, “Third” and “The Persistence Of Vision”, alongside many single tracks.

In his role as CEO of ESTA UK, Philip has developed the strategic pathway for its professional development courses and accredited programs. Philip is also in demand as a consultant and works closely with the music industry. In 2018 became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and String Ambassador for the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

Steve’s interests include ornithology, photography and Celtic knotwork.

Hobbies include supporting Welsh Rugby Union, cooking and collecting vintage port. .

John Shayler

Sheila Holdsworth

John Shayler’s musical life began with violin lessons at Bedford School with Helena Langford. While studying sociology at Sussex University, he had part-time lessons at the Guildhall School of Music with Joan Spencer, who persuaded him to do a postgraduate year full-time.

Sheila has been a freelance viola player since 1990 and has enjoyed a varied career playing for Covent Garden, BBC SO, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Welsh National Opera, RPO, West End shows and her favourite gig, the Bootleg Beatles amongst others.

Sheila has always had fingers in other pies including running her own bra business called Know Knockers winning Take a Break’s competition Tycoon Idol in 2004. She is now also running a small felt making business called Felty Towers. Sheila has beena member of ESTA’s team since 2013.

His association with Bedfordshire Youth Music began in 1968, when he led the then new County Youth Orchestra for a while, before becoming tutor of the violins. After his studies at the Guildhall the then new Music Advisor, Michael Rose, offered him a violin teaching job with the Authority, and after a year, John became Head of String Instrument Teaching, a post he held until his early retirement in 2002.

Julia Atkinson

As well as his association with Bedfordshire, John has been a member of the Management Committee and Council of the European String Teachers’ Association for many years, and was appointed Chair of Council in December 2012.

Since his retirement, John has been travelling a lot, exploring the sights and beers of over 50 countries.

Julia Atkinson(violin) has had a busy career as both a performer and teacher.

Her playing work has included The RPO, Northern Ballet and shows. Julia played for a season in Parma , Italy and was a member of the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra , Norway for a year. Julia is currently a member of the Astor String Quartet with Sheila, and plays regularly with the quintet at The Ritz Hotel.

Natalia Corolscaia Natalia started to play violin at the age of 7, having her first lessons at the prestigious Musical Lyceum “Sergei Rachmaninov” in Chisinau, Republic of Moldova. At that time she took part in numerous concerts and music festivals as a soloist, quartet and orchestra member.

Julia is the ex Head of Strings at St Dunstan’s College in South East London. She has taught at Junior Royal College of Music as well as Junior Trinity College of Music. Apart from organising many string workshop days herself Julia coaches regularly on the South London Youth Orchestra Course and is the conductor for the String Group on the Elizabeth College Summer Orchestral Course in Guernsey.

When Julia is not working she loves walking up mountains, along coastal paths and to the pub to enjoy some of the local ales!

After successfully graduating, Natalia obtained a full scholarship at the Academy of Music, Theatre and Fine Arts at the “Gavriil Musicescu” in Chisinau, in the class of Angela Molodojan, Maestro in Arts of the Republic of Moldova. She graduated with a Licentiate Diploma in Higher Education Music.

In that period Natalia started working in the National Opera and Ballet Theatre as a violinist in the orchestra performing in Germany, Spain, France, Belgium and Switzerland. In 2016, Natalia was offered a full scholarship at the University of Chichester starting her Masters Degree in Advanced Music Performance..

I have already started using strategies suggested with students learning to shift position and will try out many of the beginner strategies with my new starters in September
