Tip #1: When Do I Need To Update My SWPPP? To ensure compliance and maintain best practices, you should review and update your facility’s Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) on a regular basis. There are also specific events and changes in procedures or operating conditions that trigger the need for an update.

Have any of the following occurred at your facility since your current SWPPP was prepared? If so, you need an update! • • • • • • • • • • • •

Changes to procedures in the SWPPP Changes to stormwater control measures Changes in stormwater composition Changes in the stormwater pollution prevention team Construction activities Changes in design, maintenance, or operations change the nature of pollutants in stormwater Unauthorized release or discharge Exceedances of numeric effluent limits Corrective actions Control measures are no longer adequate to meet applicable water quality standards Agency inspection determines modifications are necessary to meet non-numeric effluent limits Average of 4 quarterly sampling results exceed an applicable benchmark

Have questions? Need help evaluating or updating your SWPPP? Contact Payson Whitney or Mike Feinblatt at 781.431.0500 for more information.

Many SWPPP updates are minor and can be handled by facility personnel. When a more detailed revision is required, such as to address effluent limits, you may want to get professional assistance to ensure that you meet compliance requirements.

Important, but easily overlooked! SWPPP revisions documenting corrective actions require a new certification statement signed and dated by the responsible official. Other revisions can be signed and dated by the person preparing the revision.
