GOLF COLCHESTER Congratulations, Tiger! Tiger Woods completed one of sport’s greatest comebacks at the Masters by claiming a fifth Green Jacket to end an 11-year major title draught. So, what was in the winner’s bag? Tiger used the TaylorMade M5 driver with its Speed Injected Twist Face to launch around Augusta National, opting for TaylorMade P7TW irons on the approach and finishing with the iconic Scotty Cameron Newport 2 to sink his win. If you want to kit yourself out with the 15-major winner’s set-up, pop in-store to see the range. Spring has sprung and we’re noticing that the greens are a little busier in Essex! If you’re planning to make the most of this month on the course, we’ve got a plenty of special promotions for you, take a look at! With a rise in temperature clothing and shoes have especially taken off and with brands such as Underarmour, Ping, Callaway, Puma, Oakley, Stromberg, Footjoy in the men’s clothing and Rohnisch, Puma and Callaway in the ladies there are plenty of choices of sizes and colours. Once again Skechers shoes in both ladies and men’s are selling exceptionally well due their ‘instance’ comfort, style choice and colours! Finally, with our clubs guys having a minimum of 19 years of experience each and working in conjunction with our ‘Skytrak’ launch monitor we can show you what difference new clubs will make against your current ones. For a free appointment please phone 01206 212752 and ask for either Jon, Andy or Andrew who will be happy help.

ngland staged a confident performance to E beat Spain 13-7 in the mixed international at Formby Golf Club and keep their firm grip on

knowing they needed just 3.5 points to retain the trophy. Tom Plumb was first to score, notching up five birdies as he won 3/2. “We had a great foursomes this morning and a good lead, so we all wanted to get some points on the board early. Everyone wants to win!” Bailey Gill took England to within touching distance of victory when he won 5/3, playing nicely under par. His result left the way clear for Jones to clinch the victory. But the team wasn’t finished. Lily May Humphreys had seven birdies in her round as she worked her way to a 5/3 win, finishing off with an impressive up and down from a steep sandhill beside the green.

the Seve Ballesteros Trophy. They built on the previous day’s one point lead with a 4-1 win in this morning’s foursomes before taking six of the 10 singles. Ben Jones scored the winning point when he holed a 35ft birdie putt to clinch his match 3/2 and he said: “It’s always nice to do, but as long as the team wins it doesn’t matter who takes us over the line. For the team to win is always great!” The match started in 1985 as a men’s fixture with England leading Spain 14-2 by 2013. It became a mixed event in 2015 and England have now won the three matches played so far. This weekend’s event began in the most challenging of conditions with winds gusting around 50mph. The weather meant that yesterday’s singles were abandoned, but the teams managed to play one session of foursomes. England Golf Performance Director Nigel Edwards had praise for his players’ attitude when the going got tough. “Conditions were extremely difficult but the attitude they showed paved the way for today’s play, which was really good. The players really showed what they can do when the conditions are more favourable.” After the first session England led 3-2; after this morning’s foursomes the lead was extended to 73 and the team made quick work of the singles,

TRIP OF A LIFE TIME

trio of amputee golfers from Essex are about A to embark on a once in a lifetime trip to Florida where they will play the stunning Arnold

Palmer Bay Hill course. Matt Woollard, Paul Findlay and Darren Fuller will join 13 fellow amputee war veterans on the prestigious course in the sunshine state as part of a unique trip organised by military charity Blesma, The Limbless Veterans. Bay Hill, at Orlando, hosts the Arnold Palmer Invitational tournament on the PGA tour which was won by Francesco Molinari in March. Former soldier Paul, from Langdon Hills, lost his right left in 2009 while serving with the Royal Corps of Signals in Afghanistan. After attending a Blesma charity golf day, Paul was motivated to join his local golf club, Langdon Hills, and has worked with the charity to expand its golf rehabilitation activities to help newbies enjoy the sport and progress through levels of achievement. “To be able to play a sport that I’m passionate about without feeling my disability is holding me back has been a game changer for me,” said 33year-old Paul, a Support Officer for the Chadwell Health based charity. “Other Blesma Members felt the same too so we created a golf society and now have 70 Members, and we expect to hit 100 by the end of the year. Some of our one-armed golfers are phenomenal. To see them play a sport you’d think you’d need two hands for proves that anything is possible.” The trip is the latest stepping stone for the

golfers to enhance their skills and Blesma has also supported some Members to train for employment in the golf industry through training as caddies. Recently, several Blesma Members have joined Three Rivers Golf Club, at Chelmsford, and are looking forward to taking on the Kings and Jubilee courses over the season.

Blesma, The Limbless Veterans is the national charity for all limbless service men and women, their widows and dependents. It was formed in the years following the First World War and became a national charity in 1932. Blesma is dedicated to assisting serving and ex-Service men and women who have suffered limb loss or the loss of us of a limb, an eye or loss of sight. The Blesma golf society has grown over the last 18 months and has been privileged to be invited to play matches at some wonderful clubs in Essex. Should you wish to take on a team of limbless veterans then contact Paul Findlay on bsolse@blesma.org.

captaincy this year of Paul Smith needed another three to guarantee the tie. Tom Rothery and Richard Hayes both coming up trumps with a 4&2 win over Clayton Jeffries and a one up victory over Ben Uesdon. The tie sealing match having come earlier from Chris Blakebourgh who had a resounding win over Lee Hale of 7&5 giving Colchester 8½ points from the 15 available. Colchester’s Sam Jackson lost out to Stacy Wilkinson 5&4 and Louis Partner going down to Ryon Weeks 6&4, the balance of the team adding points to the final score. Shaun Holmes getting the better of Donny Clarke 3&2, Clive Mason 6&5 over Craig Green. With the tie over the honours were halved in the final match between Matt Michaels and James Bettis. The final score in the tie being eleven to four in Colchester’s favour.

The Leslie Wood is open to all Essex Golf Clubs with qualifying players having to be of eight handicap and above. Home advantage is always a bonus in County competitions and in wet and dismal weather Colchester made the best of it in the morning’s foursomes coming out 3½ matches to 1½ in front. In the afternoon’s ten singles matches Colin Gathercole lead out Colchester’s team against Craig Garton, a tight match which went down to the last with Gathercole winning one hole up. Mike Blakebourgh was second out and secured his match on the fifteenth hole with a 4&3 victory over Adam Stringer. With these two victories Colchester, under the

Can Loosing Weight & Eating Healthily Improve Your Golf? 100% YES!

e are all so focused on corrective exercise, W stretching and having a golf coach to technically improve our game but what about

food, eating well and being at a “good” weight? What is a “good” weight? I mean reducing tummy fat! Golf is very very tough on the core, the core needs to be working correctly to support the back, stabilise the pelvis and produce power ... if there is too much weight carried around this area then you are reducing your support to the back, unstabilising the pelvis and reducing your power through the ball.

Why else should a golfer be looking at their diet? Health, eating well and fuelling the body correctly will improve how a golfer performs. The right fuel gets the right performance. Energy levels, concentration, drive and effort will perform at its best when you are eating correctly and drinking enough water. Not just around the course but all the time. What you fuel the body with Thursday for example will have an effect on your game on the Friday and so on. TOP TIPS; 1. Drink 3 litres of pure, clean water a day 2. Eat regularly - every 3 hours (even round

the course!)

3. High protein, high good fats and a little less

Losing tummy fat is high up on the list when I work with my golfers (if appropriate and needed) as a distended abdominal wall will permit the core (abdominals) from working. This in return will leave that golfer open to injury and will restrict his movement through the ball.

of the starchy carbs (cut down bread, potatoes, pasta) 4. Start your day with protein (eggs, avocado, smoked salmon for example) 5. Eat your greens!! Try and eat green at every meal 6. Reduce your sugar and alcohol intake (life is for living, do not cut out, just reduce where needed) 7. Example day; Eggs, avocado and smoked salmon brekky, snack on a banana and some walnuts, eat a large green salad with chicken, balsamic and salad bits for lunch, snack on some meat/fish and another piece of fruit and then have a steak, sweet potato jacket and green veg for dinner ... good wholesome, nutritious food. Try these out and let me know how you get on! - 20 -

CONGRATULATIONS TO CIARA

WELL DONE FORRESTER JUNIORS orrester Park Golf Club Juniors should be F very proud of themselves. Up against some worthy competition from The Warren, our boys

did incredibly well, winning 4-1 in their first Youth Shield Match. A huge well done to the whole team and to The Warren who put in some fine displays of golf themselves, on to the next game and to the next success.

Ciara Rushmer of Langdon Hills Golf Club.

iara Rushmer from Langdon Hills Golf C Club, recently won an event on the British Junior Golf Tour at The Bedfordshire. Scoring a

nett 65 playing off a handicap of 13. She is playing in the BJGT events for a second season and having great successes which has resulted in her being invited to play in the IMG World championships in San Diego later this year. She has also been interviewed on Essex Radio to promote the BJGT, which will be visiting Thorpe Hall for the second time on May 28th.

VICTORY FOR STOKE BY NAYLAND

n Monday 1st April Stoke by Nayland Golf Club took on Stock Brook Manor in O the first round of this year’s John Day Trophy

competition. This county team competition is competed for by golfers with handicaps between 13 and 28, 9 in a team playing singles match play. A very tight game was ensued with both teams off similar handicaps. After 9 holes the match was level with both teams up in four and level in one.

However the home team piled on the pressure on the second nine and came home with a 5 ½ to 3 ½ victory. The whole match was played in a very good spirit with excellent wins going to Dick Lumsden 7 & 5, Bob Filer 6 & 5 and Tony Denmead 6 & 5. Naylands next opponents are Stapleford Abbotts, with the match to be played before the May 10th. - 22 -

FEEL THE FEAR AND DO IT ANYWAY! A

that over it happens, and the old saying of ‘I knew I was going to do that’ comes into play.

recent comment on a golf course, reminded me of a book I read many years ago by Susan Jeffers, ‘Feel the fear and do it anyway!’ Whilst putting out to win a match, I heard the player say, ‘I am so scared of this putt, it literally fills me with fear’.

So how can you react? 1. Breath! In my opinion breathing is an under-

Now, time first for a little context here; Yes, you want to make the putt, to win the competition or the match ... but let’s have a reality check. Fear is not knowing where your next meal is coming from for your family, fear is being confronted by a potential life-changing incident, a dangerous threat to your life … it’s not about missing a putt! So if that’s the case, why does our brain trigger this ‘fear’ response, at the slightest pressure? Well fear has been described as a survival response, created since man first walked the earth. The amygdala, a small, yet important part of the brain, is designed to warn us of potential harm and situations. Now things have moved on from the possibility of being eaten by a T-Rex, yet the amygdala will liken, for example, several missed putts to the next opportunity, and start the process of the ‘fear factor!’ (This is why momentum is so crucial to great golf). If you’ve missed four 3 foot putts, how are you going to feel on the next one? Fear itself is not an issue, it’s our reaction to it that matters and how we control it (or not). You’ll agree, that when you feel fearful, tension will build in your mind and body, the swing won’t ‘flow’ as it has done before and generally timing goes out of the window. That’s when the topped shot, the air-shot, the chip into the bunker rather

utilised skill, in a range of situations. Perhaps I should say here, ‘Controlled Breathing’, as you can certainly be the one in control. When you’re fearful or anxious about a situation, then breathing can become more rapid, shallow, etc. NOT letting enough Oxygen enter the bloodstream, which heightens the situation. 2 - 3 long, deep breaths, in through the nose and out through the mouth, will start to calm the system. 2. Process! Again, I’ve spoken many times about creating and having a successful process and sticking to it. Any potentially ‘fearful’ situation will undoubtedly ensure your shot is executed with more regular success. 3. Practise under pressure! Make your practise sessions meaningful. A practise session is totally different to a warm up, where you are just loosening the body to make a good swing on the first tee. A practise session should have consequence surrounding it. i.e ONE ball on the putting green, not 4 hit from the same point (that never happens on the course). One shot with each club, to a known target, rather than smashing balls on the range, etc. Another tip here is to practise skills that make you feel ‘uncomfortable’ (chips over bunkers, 3 foot putts, etc.) Do let me know how successful you have been over the coming weeks, simply drop me a line. Finally this month, I’m very proud of the amount of Mind Zone attendees who have reduced their handicap significantly, have won competitions and those that are taking far more enjoyment from the game in general. What has truly been outstanding are the amount of ‘hole in one’ successes. I’m delighted to say that this time, it wasn’t a Mind Zone attendee, that aced a hole, but it was Yours Truly!! During a Club Competition to boot! Mind Zone at its best. If you want to increase YOUR chances of an ace or to shoot lower scores, using that powerful tool between your ears, simply give me a call.

DON’T OVER

A NA LY S E

here are many things we can do without some T technical instruction and without breaking each individual movement into some over analysed

motion. For example if we throw a bunch of keys to someone or to a table did we need instruction to do it. I suggest not, and more importantly we generally achieve the task quite well. This ability we already have is none more important than around the green, just spend some

1

time as I am doing in the Pictures 1, 2 and 3 throwing or bowling balls around a green, you will be amazed how easy and naturally you do. Now just imagine transferring this skill to actual play. To do this have you practice swing without the club in your hands as I am doing in Picture 4. Without the club it is much easier to get a sense and feel of the required length and pace of swing.

PRESSURE POINTS I

find one common misconception when coaching the “hold” to a new or more established player is the pressure applied to the handle of our golf club. Let’s face it golf is a game of degrees, trying to propel the ball to a target some yards away with hazards and external obstacles in between is a life long skill and one every player is seeking to master. This is not a psychology article so let’s just focus on reducing tension through our hands and fingers, it is clear to see when a player is holding too much tension through their “swing” radiating up their arms and into their shoulders. This tension generally has an adverse effect on our ability to control and work the club face. So, here are the specific areas within the hold regardless as to the type you decide to employ which will assist with a free flowing movement and swing. The information is based for a right handed golfer: 1. The Last three fingers of the left hand, incidentally this pressure point will give you a clue if the hold is too much in the lifeline of your left hand you will feel it in the finger tips (another article!)

2.The “Question mark” as I call it. I like this to sit below the right thumb if possible to support the club at the top of the backswing 3.The heel pad of the right thumb just nestling on top of the left

Heel pad of right thumb

There are a number of drills I can provide to assist you to recreate the above but if you finish a round of golf or even feel during the round your hands and fingers are aching you are certainly getting a GRIP instead of a HOLD. Golf is not supposed to be a white knuckle ride but a gentle relaxing game with friends.

RIGHT LEG STRAIGHTENING THE DECISION here has been a lot written T regarding wether or not the right leg should straighten in

the backswing and if it does how much should it be allowed to straighten. There are a lot of factors to take into account regarding this issue more in my opinion for straightening rather than not. I have put in an image of Justin Rose down the line from 2000 and 2018. Once you see the image you can start to dissect why straightening the right leg as a positive impact on most golf swings. Firstly I will explain why I say the most swings. Basically the taller the person the more they need to straighten the right leg especially with irons, this is because the posture is slightly more over and therefore the shoulder plane needs to be slightly steeper, shorter golfers stand a bit further away from the ball and the shoulders turn shallower which does not need as much straightening of the right leg(think baseball swing). OK, back to Justin Rose working from the head down. Eye line downwards is basically the same which is a given for quality golfers he is looking at the ball. Spine angle down 10 degrees with the left arm now on shoulder plane rather than up above shoulder plane in 2000. Club is in an on plane condition at the top of swing rather than moving towards across the line in 2000. Hips are slanted downwards now against the almost horizontal hip turn from before. Knee slants are

downward now rather than almost zero slant in 2000. The on plane condition at the top is a direct result of the left knee forward and right leg straightening this allows the Lumbar spine and hip girdle to rotate and tilt which actually causes much less torsion (twisting) in the spine itself. For me the arms being lifted in 2000 was a direct result of lack of hip slant and tilt which did not allow the shoulder plane to go down enough. And this is a direct result of the right leg not straightening enough and correctly. If you have any questions regarding this edition please feel free to call or email me paul@paulhollandgolf.com 07961 848 370

The Centre Strike The Purest Fundamental A

Today's clubs are so forgiving you can hit it anywhere on the face and still get a result

common statement but unfortunately complete rubbish. So, let me give you a piece of advice: If you cannot consistently hit the centre of the face on your irons or the middle of the face on your woods you will never reach your golfing potential. There are two causes of inconsistent striking your clubs are incorrect for you or your technique needs some work. But, you cannot work on technique until you address your equipment. This may not mean new equipment, it can just be a case of modifying what you have already got. Over the years I have read many golf books and I fail to give the author any credibility if there is no mention of the importance of centre strikes. I read a lot about swing plane but how can you preach about this if a basic fundamental like the lie angle is incorrect? If the iron was upright (toe off the floor) and the swing was good the ball would go left unless the player made an adjustment or compensation during the swing. You cannot make a good swing with a poorly

fitted golf club and expect to hit the ball consistently. I have also come to the conclusion that the word 'Standard' is the worst word in golf and over the years has probably wrecked more people's golf games than anything else. There is no standard, there is no standard length, no standard lie, no standard weight, no standard flex - do I need to go on? But, these are all aspects that effect striking the ball in the centre of the face. One of the first things we are taught when we start the game is how to align the head – it is incredible how many golfers I see who cannot do this due to their equipment. Your equipment should allow you to find the centre of the club, if it doesn't then it's wrong. With regards to hitting the ball anywhere on the face think of it like this – for every dimple you miss the sweet spot by you are losing out on both ball speed and directional control – and for what, to be ‘Standard?’ “Many beginners and even experienced players defeat their efforts to play golf by depending on unsuitable equipment” - Tommy Armour.

WHAT IS CONSISTENCY IN GOLF? T

he difference between the Tour Player and the Club Player is their ability to stay neutral/in balance. TOUR PLAYERS HAVE AT LEAST THREE WAYS/THOUGHTS/FEELS THAT APPEARS TO GIVE ONE SWING. WHILE CLUB PLAYERS HAVE ONE THOUGHT/“SECRET”/FEEL THAT RESULTS IN AT LEAST THREE SWINGS.

The only consistent feel the Tour Player experiences is the shaft loading in transition and the best players have the ability to manage their basics and senses to achieve this along with the desired impact and shot.

The images above are to represent neutral and each side of it with the Tour Players intention is to match feel and real so they load the shaft correctly i.e. the middle image but if they don’t match i.e. feel neutral (middle image) but are really above/high (right image) and don’t feel the shaft load correctly. Then to get neutral they will probably have to feel flatter (left image) but we will see it as the middle image which is where

they are and they will sense the shaft loading and desired impact. These images represent how the Club Player using the same thought/secret/feel will deliver all 3 swings on different days and generally say something along these lines “I’m doing exactly what I did on Tuesday when I played great and now it’s not working.” TO BE CONSISTENT YOU HAVE TO BE INCONSISTENT, TO DO THIS YOU HAVE TO BE COMFORTABLE BEING UNCOMFORTABLE, the best players are

uncomfortable more than they are comfortable but understand this and manage their senses

accordingly to hit their dispersion pools/ spots to get it round and compete. WHEN YOU LEARN YOUR BASICS AND HOW TO TWEAK THEM SO YOU CAN LOAD THE SHAFT TO DELIVER THE DESIRED IMPACT AND SHOT ON ANY DAY YOU WILL HAVE CONSISTENCY AND TRUE CONFIDENCE.

GREENKEEPERS BLOG FROM ESSEX BIGGA ast month Essex BIGGA held a one day L irrigation workshop at Boyce Hill aimed at Assistant and Deputy Head Greenkeepers that

wanted to learn more about a very important area after last summer, now that spring 2019 is also very dry irrigation systems around the counties golf courses are being used far earlier in the season than most had anticipated. Automated irrigation systems on golf courses are complex and expensive investments and golfers are very much mistaken if they think its as simple as watering their lawn at home. To begin with you need a sustainable water source, some use mains water supply which is very expensive, for others it may be via a bore hole or surface abstraction, some clubs may even take it from a lake or reservoir but the supply needs to be sustainable and noncontaminated. This water supply then needs to be pumped from this supply and stored into tanks close to the main irrigation pump house and will supply the water when the automated program is run. Inside the pump house will be several pieces of important equipment but most important will be the pumps and the control panel. The pumps are just like the human heart pumping water around miles of buried pipes under your golf course and these are often at high pressure (8-8.5 bar 116-123 psi). Around your golf course there are valve boxes which control the flow of water to areas that need to be irrigated, separate pipes will run off these valve boxes to sprinklers located around tees and greens and if your golf course has invested in a complete system this will include fairways, approaches and surrounds. Inside these control valves will be decoders that receive an electronic signal sent via a program running on a PC often in the Head Greenkeepers office, miles of wire run alongside the pipe network. The computer will send a signal to the decoder which will open the solenoid valve and let water run through to the sprinklers which will pop up. The sprinklers have to be equally spaced with correct nozzles to given a uniform

head to head throw of water in still conditions however windy nights can severely effect applied irrigation water via drift. Often a course manager will use a moisture probe to check the Volumetric Water Content (VMC) on greens before deciding how much water to apply or an onsite weather station may give evapotranspiration rates that often guide the greenkeeper how many millimetres of water to apply. Programs will run overnight and depending on the size of areas to be irrigated and how much water is to be applied could run for just a couple

of hours to maybe even ten hours. When a Course Manager goes home for the night he often will cross his fingers that everything works ok, those that work with computers will appreciate that programs can crash or freeze which means an irrigation program may fail to run in its entirety. A power cut or surge can cause similar problems the latter can blow up decoders which run at low voltage. Pop up sprinkers can fail, get stuck on or not rotate properly which also means turf can either not get any water or too much. Over the years a lack of investment means in general most golf clubs have irrigation systems that are past their sell by dates and prone to failures which means they need constant maintenance and repair hence its not uncommon to see greenkeepers digging holes to repair burst pipes/faulty joints or heads in irrigation valve boxes trying to diagnose a fault. This is only a extremely brief synopsis of a irrigation system but hopefully sheds some light on why it can often give greenkeepers plenty of stress.

ESSEX PROFESSIONALS REGAIN THE DUDLEY SMITH TROPHY

ssex Professionals regained the trophy in the E annual match against the Essex Amateurs at Frinton Golf Club in the 70th playing of the

Played in a Ryder Cup style of 5 foursomes matches and then 10 singles, the Professionals went into lunch leading 3-2 after wins for Robert Coles and James Webber, Lloyd Kennedy and Craig Housden and Mark Talbott playing with Thorpe Hall colleague Joe Ellis. as the afternoon singles were very close, eventually finishing with 5 points to each side and four of the matches finishing all square on the 18th green. Roger Gray, captaining the side in the absence of Essex PGA Captain, Craig Laurence who was otherwise engaged at an event in Augusta Georgia, expressed his thanks to his team for their performance. Thanks were also given to Frinton Golf Club for the amazing condition of the course in early April.

Friendly Match

ESSEX COLTS v CHELMSFORD Chelmsford Golf Club – Sunday 31st March 2019 ssex Colts played the E first of their 2019 Friendly matches on

Sunday 31st March against Chelmsford. A bright, sunny day, but extremely cold. This annual fixture is arranged for the Colts (ages 18 – 25 on the first of January) to play the previous year’s Thornton Cup winners. Having twelve in each team gives Team Managers good opportunity to assess players and pairings for the forthcoming season. The twelve Colt team members came from eight different clubs - excluding those from Chelmsford who played in the home team. They were: Lukas Warren, Colts Captain (Thorndon Park) Patrick Arundel (Boyce Hill). Josh Cardy, & Sam Kinnane (The Warren), Callum Hensby (Stoke by Nayland). Josh Tobin, Harry Robson, Cassidy Steffens & Callum Newton (Orsett). Callum Pipe (Braintree). Harrison Linney (West Essex). George Leversuch (Wanstead). Six of these players were playing for the Colts for the first time. Most of them previous members of the County under 18’s team. The Morning Foursomes went very much the Colts way. Five wins. Josh Cardy & Callum Hensby 6&4. Lukas Warren & Patrick Arundel 4&3. Callum Pipe & Harry Robson 4&2. Josh Tobin & Harrison Linney and Cassidy Steffens & Sam Kinnane both 2&1.The pairing of an established Colt with a newcomer proved successful. Foursomes 5 - 1. The Afternoon Singles were tightly contested. Captain Lukas Warren won his match 3&2. Chelmsford then had strong wins in games 2,3 and 4 Harvey Sullivan, Brandon Meads and Ben Humphrey. Two all square matches from Josh Tobin v Curtis Knipes and Harry Robson v Jack Brown. Colt wins – George Leversuch 5&4. Callum Pipe, Callum Newton & Cassidy Steffens all 5&3. Harrison Linney 4&3. Chelmsford win for Lewis Wright. Singles: 7 – 5. Total 12 – 6. With many of the Chelmsford team being Essex Colts this bodes well for the 2019 Season giving us a large number to select a team from. Many thanks to Chelmsford Golf Club for hosting this match, especially as it was Mothering Sunday. The match was played in excellent spirit, and twenty-four Mums should be proud of their sons!

Match Report

THE KEATING TROPHY White Tees, Three Rivers Golf & Country Club (Kings Course) – Saturday 6th, 13th & 14th April 2019 he Essex Golf Union’s first Championship of the T season saw Three Rivers Golf & Country Club host 72 competitors as they played 36 holes of golf over a very

challenging and well-presented course. Only 16 places were on offer for the Matchplay Finals that took place on the 13th & 14th April also hosted by Three Rivers. The 72 competitors were wrapped up well to avoid the bitterly cold winds that swept across the course in the morning. The temperature did not rise much during the day and left 56 disappointed, as well as cold, players at the end of the Qualifying stage of the Keating Trophy. A terrific event which saw some great golf played as the counties finest battled for a place in the Matchplay stages. The strong field found the course in fine condition with the greens running fast, especially for April. However, the cold wind took its toll, with only 6 players Read approach shot in the final. breaking par over the whole day. In the morning, Callum Newton (Orsett), Ricky Lee (Boyce Hill) & Oscar Yeomans (Chelmsford) all managed to pick up a shot on the course, all shooting one under par 71s. They were two shots clear of Joshua Read (The Rayleigh Club) and Nathan Parrish (Chelmsford) heading into the afternoon round. The afternoon was slightly damper as light rain occasionally fell on parts of the course. Despite the stiff breeze, the three that beat par in the afternoon were Lukas Warren (Thorndon Park), Josh Read (The Rayleigh Club) and low score of the day was Harry Robson (Orsett) with a 69 (-3). Harry’s ‘Chalk & Cheese’ display managed to get him 11th spot and secured a place in the Matchplay rounds the following weekend. Harry was one of 5 competitors that qualified from Orsett; Shaun Mills reinstated as an amateur late last year took 16th spot, Cassidy Steffens took 13th, Joshua Tobin and Callum Newton tied on 147 for 3rd and 4th respectively. A total of three players from Chelmsford also managed to qualify, in 14th spot was Alex Bradley with a total of 152, Harvey Sullivan was a shot better on 151 with Oscar Yeomans on 150 after his 79 in the afternoon. Josh Read’s steady total of 144 (Level par) for the 36 holes saw him win the Qualifier by three shots from Orsett duo Callum Newton & Joshua Tobin, both on 147, along with Thorndon Park’s Lukas Warren after his well-crafted 71 in the afternoon. Final Qualifying places can be seen on the opposite page. Tobin hitting an approach shot in the final.

At the Matchplay stages, some great battles took place. The 16 players took to the course on the Saturday morning and by 5pm there were just 4 left in the competition, 3 of the top 4 from the stroke play stage, only Lukas Warren narrowly missing out to Alex Christie (Basildon) on the Saturday afternoon by 2&1. On Sunday both semi-finals were close affairs, Joshua Read managed to overcome Callum Newton by way of a 2&1 victory whilst the other Orsett semi-finalist, Joshua Tobin, managed to pip Alex Christie on the 22nd hole. After nearly 90 holes of golf had been played by both remaining players, there was just one more round to play. The final commenced on Sunday afternoon at 13:20 between Joshua Tobin (Orsett) & Joshua Read (The Rayleigh Club). The two players were nip and tuck for the front nine, Tobin with an early lead but Read managed to turn it around at the turn, going into the back nine 1up. Joshua Read holed a 15-footer for a half on the 12th to remain 1up. He then drove the Par 4 13th and capitalised by making birdie to go two up, and then followed that with a 20-foot birdie putt for a half The Finalists. on the 14th to maintain his lead. Tobin made a valiant effort but could not prevent Read from taking his first county title winning 3&2. Both players should be very proud of their play over the course of the week and we congratulate every one of the match play finalists who will pick up valuable Order of Merit points. Top marks to Joshua Read on a splendid performance, winning maximum Order of Merit points for winning both the Stroke play and Matchplay stages. We would also like to thank Three Rivers Golf & Country Club and all their staff for making us feel so welcome and hosting such a magnificent tournament. The course was very well presented, striped fairways and Joshua Read being presented the trophy by EGU President Brian Collins.

No better demonstrated than Callum Pipe with 3 birdies and an eagle in the first 4 holes! 5 under par and an early 4 up lead against the unfortuate Pro captain Roger Gray. Callum going on to a resounding 8&6 win. With Joe Tatam winning 2 up and Jamie Richards 3&2, these would be the ony games not to finish in the 18th hole. Game 1 with Lloyd Kennedy needing a birdie on the par 5 18th to edge out Brandon Meads. Robert Coles taking out County Captain Andy May all winning on the last. James Gurry won 3&1 against Ben Tobin. Three points all then and with 4 matches all halved on the last, the singles ending in a 5 all draw. This left the Pro's with the narrowest of victories by an overall 8/7 score. Fantastic tenacity and golfing talent by both sides. With Frinton Professional and Golf Manager Peter Taggart presenting the trophy to winning captain Roger Gray it was left to Andy May and Roger Gray to both thank and congratulate Frinton Golf Club and its members for again providing a course in super condition with hospitality to match.

Match Report

ESSEX UNDER 18 AND UNDER 16 v HERTFORDSHIRE UNDER 18 AND UNDER 16 Abridge Golf Club – Thursday 15th April 2019 n a sunny but cold O and windy April day an Essex team of six

under 16’s and six under 18’s met a similar structured team from Hertfordshire for the Cheshunt Salver. This is played each year in alternate counties and Essex had the privilege of hosting this event this year at Abridge Golf Club. The morning foursomes matches started off well with our first pairing of Essex Captain William Dove and Josh Gray winning 1 up on the last hole. Essex then had to wait for a further win from the first pairing of the under 16’s Wilf Elliott and Harvey Bell who won 2 up. Having only won two of our morning matches Hertfordshire were in a commanding lead with 4 to 2. This giving Essex everything to fight for in the afternoon singles. All was going well for Essex early on, but slender advantages could not be maintained through to the finish. Josh Gray managed to get a half from his match and Jake Wells won 4 and 3. Essex then had to wait until the under 16’s started to come in before any more matches were won by Essex. Wilf Elliot, Harvey Bell and Tom Vaas all won their matches 2 and 1, Harry English won 1 up and Bobby Rothery-Archer won 3 and 2. When the final scores were tallied up Hertfordshire had won by 9 ½ to Essex 8 ½. This was a very close game in the end. The winning trophy was presented to the Captain of Hertfordshire by the club Captain of Abridge, Gary Bronziet. Essex would like to thank Abridge Golf Club for the use of their course and the bar and kitchen staff for their kind treatment of all involved. Players for Essex were: Captain William Dove, Josh Gray, Bobby Rothsy Archer (Garon Park), Harvey Sullivan (Chelmsford), Jake Wells, Wilf Elliot, Harvey Bell (Clacton on Sea), Harry Wood (Langdon Hills), Charlie Dodds (Stock Brook Manor), Tom Vaas (Five Lakes) Sam Gemmell (The Warren), Harry English (Stoke by Nayland)

MATT AND ED ACHIEVE THEIR GOAL pairs had fought their way to the final from the leagues into the knockouts from the 128 players who had started in the competition. In the four ball better ball final both pairs got off to a nervous start with Black and Pain going one up early on, only to have Anderson strike the flag with a approach shot which dropped to a few inches from the hole. This gave Anderson and Smith a gross birdie which with his shot gave him a nett eagle to even up the scores and make the match all square by the turn. From the nervous start Black and Pain had between them played the first nine to gross par. They kept the pressure on, and apart from a bogey on the fourteenth hole went on to win with a birdie from twenty feet on the 16th with the final score being three holes up with two to play (3&2).

JOHN’S PRESENTATION AT ROMFORD GOLF CLUB n Saturday the 20th April last year’s Captain O of Romford Golf Club, John Fuller had the pleasure of presenting his charity cheque of

The aim to do this is providing educational programmes to help shape a generation who are self-aware about their health and wellbeing and to implement screenings within the NHS and save lives effected by the most common cancer in the UK of young men. If detected early related it carries a 95% survival rate. So during my year as Captain and with the amazing generosity and support of the members and friends of Romford Golf Club. I am extremely proud to hand to Dylan’s mum Tracy Tombides the founder of the DT38 Foundation a cheque of £16,235.00. A remarkable figure and I thank all the members of Romford Golf Club from the bottom of my heart.

£16,235.00 to Tracey Tombides, Dylan Tombides mother.

THE TIGER ROARS IN allards Gore Golf Club have their B own tiger Ann Dutton as this years new lady captain.

Last Years Captain John Fuller’s speech when presenting the cheque to his charity. When Michael Miles asked me to become Captain, it was more or less a year after I had been diagnosed with testicular cancer and during the chemotherapy part of my treatment that I read a courageous story, a remarkable young man called Dylan James Tombides. Dylan was an Australian football international who played for my beloved West Ham United, he sadly passed away aged just 20 in April 2014 after a 3 year battle with testicular cancer. The story that I mentioned in regard to this brave young man gave me the utmost inspiration on my road to recovery and as a result I had no hesitation in nominating the DT38 Foundation as my chosen charity during my year as Captain. The DT38 Foundation was set up in memory of Dylan and was formed as a result of him being misdiagnosed. DT38’ vision is to change the way testicular cancer is diagnosed by implementing best practice diagnostic guidelines for patients who are present with testicular symptoms and to raise awareness and change the stigma associated with men’s health issues.

A total of 80 members took part in the event a Florida Scramble. Winners of the competition were. Front nine: 1st Martin Cork, Diane Naylor, and Ajay Desai with a score of 33 points. 2nd Bill Wilkins, Chris Ralph, and Peter Prosser with 33 points. Back nine 1st Derek Johnson, Cathy Sheppard and John Dutton with 34 points. 2nd Glen Davis Ju Barlow and Colin Langstone with the score of 32 points. Ann’s chosen charity this year is Motor Neurone Diseases Association.

Excellent team spirits were seen in my own clubs first venture away at the ever supportive Brentwood Golf Club - sadly a defeat overall 6 & 3 for Notleys GC, with my own performance only gathering a half against George Buckley Junior who nailed a fantastic birdie on the 17th green, and closed out the par three 18th hole to being us back to All Square for the match.
