Welcome Hi There, Welcome to our Jubilee June edition. I hope you all had a fantastic time with celebrations and street parties and of course the extended bank holiday.

The airshow was a fantastic success and our family had a brilliant day on the Saturday.

This month we have a new article from Chief Inspector David Colwell from Essex police who will be writing for us on a monthly basis about local issues. (see page 24).

Chiane is home which is great news, and her recovery is going very well ! (see page 22 for a full update) We have organised another Maharaja Charity evening in aid of Chiane on Friday July 6th. Tickets are £15 for Adults and £10 for Children for a 3 course buffet meal. Everyone is welcome and it will be a fantastic night. Mickey Payne Memorial Foundation are hosting a FREE Open Day for Dementia on Saturday 30th June at the Methodist Church, High Road Benfleet. It will be an all-day event. by Sharon Longshaw This is an excellent month to pick out a few new perennials, and plant them in the garden or once the soil has warmed, you can sow seeds for perennials directly into the garden. Divide spring flowering perennials like, Primroses, Arabis, and Aubrietia. Start to pinch your Chrysanthemums to encourage them to be bushier and have more blossoms, then pinch them again, every 6 inches or so, as they grow.

Check your Roses for mildew, aphid, black-spot or other disease problems or insect infestations, if they appear take steps to control them right away. Your roses will need to be fertilized each month through the summer.

Make sure your climbing roses are securely tied into position. Prune them after blooming.

Deadhead your annuals to encourage continued flowering and remove dead foliage from your spring flowering bulbs, but only after it has died back naturally. Once the foliage of Daffodils has died back, you may divide and move the bulbs to a new spot. Daffodil clusters should be divided up every 3 years to ensure good blooming.

Stake tall flowers to keep them from blowing over in the wind, add a stake to each planting hole as you’re transplanting, then tie the stem loosely to the stake as

the plant grows. Gladiola corms can still be planted for successive blooms. Begonias can now be safely planted outdoors. As the weather dries out, your container grown plants may need daily watering, especially if the pots are exposed to the drying sunlight.

Continue to watch for insect or disease damage throughout the garden and take the necessary steps to control the problem, not forgetting to change the water in your bird bath regularly, standing water may become a breeding ground for mosquito larvae.

Keep the weeds pulled, before they have a chance to flower and go to seed again, otherwise, you will be fighting newly germinated weed seed for the next several years. **At exactly 12:00 Noon, on June 15th, set your sundial for 12:00 to get the most accurate time reading throughout the summer. ** Be alert to slug and snail damage... Seek and destroy ALL slugs!

Sticky Chicken Salad Recipe ingredients 3 tbsp honey

3 tbsp balsamic vinegar 3 tbsp soy sauce

680g chicken breasts, cut into 1" cubes

method

1.

Mix together the honey, vinegar and soy sauce. Toss the chicken cubes in the mix to coat thoroughly, and leave to stand for at least 30 minutes in the fridge.

2.

Heat a frying pan, add the chicken cubes and marinade. Cook on a high heat for about 20 minutes, until all the liquid has absorbed into the chicken. Stir regularly to prevent burning.

3.

When the chicken is thoroughly cooked, serve immediately on a bed of crispy salad.

I am Chief Inspector David Colwell, and I have been the district commander for the Southend Borough for the last two years. I also served as neighbourhood inspector for Leigh six years previous to this. I am pleased to serve this area, which I have worked in through every rank as a police officer, and have lived here all my life which gives me a special understanding of the needs of the community.

Police in your area have worked very hard to decrease crime over the past six years, and I am proud to have been part of this team, who put your crime concerns at the heart of what we do every day. At the moment, we are policing in challenging times with cuts to our budget, but I want to reassure each one of you that our focus is to continue to keep your streets safe and provide the community with a first class policing service.

At the moment, we are focusing on car crime, theft of mobiles and purses, burglary and anti-social behaviour. My officers are regularly patrolling the streets of Southend in what we call ‘3VP’ patrols, where officers look through the eyes of opportunist thieves to identify any vulnerable property, persons or premises, and then educate people on how they can better protect themselves against crime.

I urge all residents to ensure that they leave their vehicles secure at all times, remove all items of value and park in a well lit place overlooked by residential properties. As we anticipate the warmer weather, please ensure that you do not leave any accessible doors or windows open on your homes.

And with the summer set with the Queen’s jubilee and Olympics, I am sure a lot of you will be out and about celebrating, so please ensure money and mobile phones are zipped away securely to prevent you falling foul of pick-pockets

Anxiety

25 YEARS IN HEALTHCARE

& Complementary Therapies Help for Anxiety Recently I’ve been seeing more and more clients suffering with anxiety in my complementary therapy practice. Anxiety is unpleasant feeling, typically associated with uneasiness, fear, or worry. We feel threatened by something that we can’t control or avoid. When my sister, Heather was diagnosed with cancer I started to hear my heartbeat pounding; something I’d never experienced before. Other symptoms can be shortness of breath, nausea, dizziness, vomiting and feelings of despair and danger.

Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress as it sharpens us up to deal with difficult situations. However, it can become excessive and start ruling our lives and then we may need professional help.

Around 10% of us will suffer from anxiety attacks at some point our lives. So if I’m describing you here, don’t struggle on alone.

There’s a lot you can do a lot to help!

Endorphins are a nature’s way of helping with anxiety.

Physical touch, laughter, sexual activity and exercise all cause the body to release a flood of endorphins which lift our mood, helping us restore calm and get a better perspective during episodes of stress and anxiety. So all ways to help our endorphin levels consistently will help. I found a time with friends or watching a funny film, having a really good giggle seemed to help shake the anxiety out of my body, leaving me rejuvenated and refreshed.

A yoga and meditation help calm the mind and body too.

I find Bowen Technique, Massage and Reflexology

bring comfort and feelings of peace with a soothing effect on the body and mind. The breathing slows, heart rate lowers and disrupted digestion usually improves too. Anxious clients often need an opportunity to talk or cry too, offloading their worries in a safe place with someone who will listen quietly and be a confidential sounding board. Sometimes we can only talk to our friends and loved ones so much and a professional ear is welcome. Talking therapies may be prescribed your doctor. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, hypnotherapy or counselling to help overcome disruptive worries.

Aromatherapy can also be helpful for calming and

comforting, especially neroli, rose, frankincense, and lavender.

The oil can be sniffed during stressful times and a drop on your pillow can help with restful sleep too. Flower Essences such as Rescue Remedy or Emergency Essence are a wonderful first aid to help calm nerves.

Anxiety can be a very serious condition so don’t suffer in silence. Do seek medical help if it’s ruling your life.
