Slimming World

Recipe

Beef Stew

Serves: 4 Prep time: 130 minutes Cook time: Syns per serving: 0.5 0.5 4*

(*Add 6 Syns if not using beef as a Healthy Extra)

Ingredients

12 shallots Fry Light 2 carrots 567g/1lb 4oz braising steak, (all visible fat removed) 1 level tbsp tomato puree 1 bouquet garni 170g/6oz closed cap mushrooms 2 level tsp onion gravy granules salt and freshly ground black pepper freshly chopped parsley, to garnish

Method

1. Peel the shallots. Heat a large pan sprayed with Fry Light, add the shallots and fry for 5 minutes until browned. Transfer to a plate and set aside.

2. Slice the carrots, place in the pan with the steak, tomato puree, bouquet garni and 852ml/1½ pints water. wate Cover and simmer for 1½ hours.

3. Halve the mushrooms, add to the pan with the shallots and simmer for a further 20 minutes.

Sprinkle over the gravy granules and stir until thickened.

Season to taste, sprinkle with parsley and serve.

Tip: If you can't find shallots, you can use 2 onions, peeled and sliced.

As a physiotherapist, I help many people who suffer from pain, whether it is due to arthritis, muscular aches or disc problems. What these people then need is a way of managing their condition and preventing reoccurrence. This is where Pilates is the answer!

To complement my skills as a physiotherapist and help all my physiotherapy clients maintain healthy fit backs I studied The Pilates method and achieved my Instructors Matwork Certificate in 2005 with Body Control Pilates ™.

The Body Control Pilates ™ method is a body conditioning programme that works in a different way to other fitness techniques. It targets the deep postural muscles and works by building strength from the inside out, rebalancing the body and bringing it into the correct alignment. It is based on the work of Joseph Pilates who pioneered the methods in 1920's New York. He worked with actors, dancers and athletes to build strength without adding bulk. The aim was to balance strength with flexibility achieving a perfect harmony between the mind and the body.

It is an extremely safe and effective programme supported by medical practitioners and suitable for people of all ages and varying degrees of health and fitness.

Why is it Effective?

Pilates offers both mental and physical training – teaching you to be in control of your body – The core of the method is “awareness of your own body” and as a result tension can be released and correct postural alignment is taught. Each exercise is built around eight principles:Relaxation, Concentration, Coordination, Centering, Alignment, Breathing, Stamina and Flowing movements.

By working on the deep architectural structure of the body “core stability” is achieved and maintained through steadily increasing and flowing movements. Problem areas can be targeted by specific exercises but always in relation to the body as a whole.

Who is it for?

- Anyone wishing to improve general fitness/posture and appearance - Athletes - Pregnant women and post pregnancy - Those who suffer from back pain/arthritis/osteoporosis

Progressive Approach You are taught movement skills step by step which ultimately gives you strength and flexibility to perform more advanced traditional pilates exercises. Exercises can be modified for those who suffer with chronic musculoskeletal problems.

As a Physiotherapist, I use it to complement my work as it aids in the rehabilitation of many injuries and provides a long term programme which prevents further injuries and enhances performance.
