Happening NOW

Much more than just a day off from work in these parts, George Washington’s Birthday is marked with festive pageantry befitting the city’s iconic namesake. The largest parade in the nation honoring Washington is held on February 20th in Old Town Alexandria. This bustling historic seaport – and hometown to Washington – on the Potomac River throws a grand party with events through the weekend.

Want to party exactly like Washington did on his birthday in 1798? Attend the Birthnight Ball at historic Gadsby’s Tavern and go back in time to learn how Washington and his friends would have danced the night away. A banquet, live music, tavern games, 18th-century-style desserts, and dance lessons take place on February 18. Costumes optional!

Wish the great man himself a happy birthday (or “many happy returns of the day” if you want to be historically accurate) at his home, Mount Vernon. The historic estate welcomes visitors for free on February 20 and offers many special events and activities, including the foremost George Washington re-enactor who is so authentic you’d swear you had an audience with the actual first president.

The District is bathed in pink when thousands of cherry blossom trees burst into bloom at the Cherry Blossom Festival. This distinctly D.C. event – and it is truly a grand event – celebrates the gift of 3,000 cherry trees from Tokyo to Washington in 1912. Spanning four weekends, the festival begins with opening ceremonies on March 25 at the Warner Theatre, where world-renowned performers welcome springtime to Washington.

The Blossom Kite Festival on the grounds of the Washington Monument showcases creative kites and skilled competitors in several categories. The Hot Tricks Showdown and the Rokkaku Battle are two of the most popular demonstrations to see, although even novice fliers are welcome at this annual event held on April 1st. Bring your own kite or help the kids make one at an activity station.

One of the city’s biggest events, the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade features floats, giant parade balloons, celebrity performers, and marching bands from around the country. Ten blocks along Constitution Avenue and the steps of the National Archives serve as the backdrop to the nation’s premier springtime parade on April 8th.

Warmer weather brings the outdoor markets and craft shows back to D.C. In late April, Book Hill neighborhood merchants, restaurants, salons, and galleries host the Georgetown French Market, a European open air market and sidewalk sale on Wisconsin Avenue, between P Street and Reservoir Road.

One of the country’s most prestigious juried shows and sale of fine American sculptural objects and design, the Smithsonian Craft Show includes over 120 artists offering one-of-a-kind works in 12 different media from furniture and ceramics to glass and wearable art. Held at the National Building Museum, April 27-30.

The National Cathedral Flower Mart features everything springtime in this annual event, held May 5-6 at the Washington National Cathedral. Floral displays, 70 boutique booths, musical performances, garden tours, children’s entertainment, and the chance to climb the 333 steps to the Central Tower of the Cathedral make this a breathtaking celebration. nowguides.com

VISITOR TIP: Attention garden and history buffs! Tudor Place, a historial mansion in Georgetown (originally the home of Thomas Peter and his wife, Martha Parke Custis Peter, a granddaughter of Martha Washington), offers objects belonging to George and Martha Washington, and splendid gardens in spring bloom.

This powerful exhibit used ALL MAR photos and images of MONTH 18-30 historic newspapers and magazines to explore how African Americans used their First Amendment rights to right for change- often at a cost. this is part of a changing exhibit exploring the relationship between the First Amendment and the civil rights movement in the 1960s.

Head on over to the National Museum of American History every Thursday at noon, 1 and 2 p.m. for live jazz performances. The name says it all! Head over to Wilson Boulevard over in Arlington from noon-5 p.m. for a lively street festival, crafts, live entertainment, children's activities, a farmer's market, and of course food offerings from over forty different area restaurants. Proceeds from this event will benefit Virginia Hospital Center and Arlington Community Foundation.

With over 50 original documents to pour though, Amending America documents successful ratification and tried attempts at amending the Constitution in order to form 'a more perfect union."

The 3,000 square foot exhibit includes petitions, interactives, landmark documents, and political cartoons addressing issues including child labor, prayer in schools, free speech, suffrage, civil rights, and more.

Known for using the technique of shooting from a low vantage point with minimal background information, Dijkstra will feature four of her portraits of adolescents, and the 1991 self-portrait that inspired the bulk of her work to come.

Video-art pioneer Bill Viola uses cutting-edge technology to create moving images that are emotional, searing, and profound. Viola’s belief that cameras are the keepers of the soul and his interest in portraiture are explored through a selection of his works that focus on the face and the body, using his signature metaphors of water, light and spirituality. Arguably the best view of the city, the Washington Monument features an observation deck 500 feet in the air. The 70-second elevator also takes visitors to a museum. Free same-day tickets can be obtained on site or in advance.

Not for the faint of heart, the Tower Climb at the National Cathedral is 333 steps to the top. Less taxing is the Pilgrim Observation Gallery, accessed via an elevator. Soaring 360 degree views are available with both options. Prices vary.

Robert E. Lee’s former home, this Greek Revival-style mansion became the site of the national cemetery during the Civil War. Now operated by the National Park Service, Arlington House, in Arlington, VA, overlooks the Potomac River and National Mall. Free.

Uber Quickly becoming one of the most popular ride share services due its dependability and relatively short wait times. Simply download the Uber app on your smart phone, sign up with a credit or debit card, and begin requesting rides at the tap of a button. Drivers do not accept cash or credit cards, and tip is handled in the ride fare. What's Uber Pool?

This service allows you to share a ride with another rider also headed in the vicinity of your destination. This will provide you with the cheapest fare possible, but may prolong your ride by just a bit.

Via Founded on the same principles as Uber and Lyft, Via differs in that it uses their smartphone app and proprietary algorithms to determine if a group of riders in in the same area are requesting a ride in the same direction. A luxury van or Sprinter Van should arrive within five minutes after a ride is requested. Via is more environmentally friendly, charges only a $5 or $7 flat fee, and also gives you the chance to meet people.
