Georgetown History Photo Credit: Bob Rives for the Georgetown BID

Before there was Washington, there was Georgetown Once a tobacco port town of Maryland, Georgetown predates the nation’s capital by 40 years. You can discover that history at sites such as the Old Stone House, one of the oldest known remaining structures in Washington, DC, built in 1765. Now a National Park, the Old Stone House commemorates the daily lives of Georgetown’s early residents.

History On Every Corner History beckons at every turn in Georgetown. The C&O Canal is a National Historical Park with miles of hiking and biking trails. Along the Canal and south toward the Potomac River you’ll see artifacts of Georgetown’s early industrial history. Georgetown Heritage and the National Park Service are in the midst of leading a multi-year Canal restoration, which will include a new historic Canal replica boat and the revitalization of the park. Visit georgetownheritage.org for more.

Take a Tour

Further north in Georgetown’s residential area are the historic house museums Dumbarton House and Tudor Place, which tell the stories of Georgetown’s prominent early residents. And all along M Street and Wisconsin Avenue, shops, restaurants, and offices bring modern life into the neighborhood’s historic rowhomes. The City Tavern Club on M Street, now a private social club, once hosted guests including Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and John Adams.

Georgetown’s history is part of what makes it so special; discover more during a visit to the Peabody Room, or on a walking tour of the neighborhood. Follow The African American Heritage Trail to see the churches and residences that were at the heart of Georgetown’s African American community in the 19th and 20th centuries. Or trace the path of those most iconic Georgetown residents, the Kennedys. In addition to guided tours of Georgetown estates and gardens, scenic tours are available daily.

Playtime in Georgetown also means ‘me time’ with a well-deserved visit to one of over 50 plush salons and spas. Get the head-to-toe treatment, from massages to facials and lash bars, for a day of pampering that will leave you feeling refreshed and re-energized for even more exploring. Or, bring the salon experience home with a shopping spree through one of the neighborhood’s numerous beauty stores that sell international brands and made-in-DC products alike.

Sunset on the Waterfront Georgetown Waterfront Park beckons on a summer night, just as the sun’s going down, with a view of the Kennedy Center to the left and Key Bridge to the right. Few places are more Instagram-worthy, or more perfectly suited for a community event. Georgetown Sunset Fitness in the Park is a free series of outdoor fitness classes, running June-August. Looking for less exercising and more relaxing? Grab a picnic and a blanket and head to Georgetown Sunset Cinema, a free movie series in July and August. Taste of Georgetown Eat, drink and play at the Taste of Georgetown, an annual celebration of food, wine, and music that has been one of Washington, DC’s premier neighborhood events for more than 20 years. There’s only one opportunity each year to taste your way through Georgetown in a single afternoon, with more than 60 signature dishes from over 30 of Georgetown’s restaurants, in addition to wine and craft beer pairings, music and family-friendly activities. Holiday Happenings & Georgetown GLOW Magical is the only way to describe Georgetown during the holiday season. Festive roof lighting lines the streets, wreaths adorn every lamp post, Santa comes to town in Book Hill, and small businesses compete in a neighborhood window decorating contest. Throughout December and early January, visitors can also experience the sparkle of the season at Georgetown GLOW, the region’s only curated exhibition of outdoor public light art installations. Set against the historic backdrop of DC’s oldest neighborhood, it’s a whole new way to shine. Established in 2014, the innovative exhibition has quickly become one of the region’s most anticipated holiday spectacles.
