A Fun Way to Get Fit in Wrexham
Erddig Nordic Walkers (ENW) were delighted to organise a taster event in Queen’s Square, Wrexham on 30 October to showcase the benefits of Nordic walking and their involvement in this activity locally. A mini training session demonstrated the technique in using Nordic walking poles and, as well as learning about this special form of walking, ENW leaders were on hand to discuss how the group is able to exercise, whilst celebrating the great outdoors, in the natural heritage of our fantastic area and being involved with a fun group of people.
As ambassadors of culture for the Wrexham Community and Culture Trust (WCCT) application for Wrexham 2029 City of Culture, Erddig Nordic Walkers were very pleased to be joined at the event by several members of the bid team and the Mayor of Wrexham, Councillor Tina Mannering.

PPLHG Marks 25 Years
About 30 members and friends celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the Pulford and Poulton History Group on 12 September at the home of the current Chair. The sunny afternoon included a ‘Bring and Share’ feast, music, and entertainment from a comedian magician.
Original committee member, Mike Nethercott, reflected on the group’s early days and the influence of the late first Chair, Margaret Fair. Over 25 years, the group has held more than 180 talks, organised guided tours, and produced publications including Pulford and Poulton through the Ages (2010) and a History Board in 2024.

Armed Forces Carol Concert
The Armed Forces Community Carol Service returns for its third year this Christmas, offering a festive evening of music, remembrance, and community spirit.
The free event will take place at St Giles’ Church on Thursday 4 December, starting at 7pm, and everyone is warmly welcome to attend.
Highlights include music from the City of Wrexham Brass Band, performances by local school choirs, and a parade of standards by veterans’ associations. The event will also support Scotty’s Little Soldiers, a charity for bereaved British Forces children, making it a heartwarming celebration of community, remembrance, and festive spirit.

Free NHS Christmas Event
Maelor Voluntary Service is spreading some festive cheer this December with a special Christmas appreciation event for NHS staff. All NHS employees are invited to enjoy a complimentary tea or coffee, along with mince pies and biscuits, as a seasonal thank you for their hard work throughout the year. Staff simply need to show their NHS lanyard to receive their treats.
The event will take place on Tuesday 9 December at Café 1, by the main entrance of Wrexham Maelor Hospital, between 10am and 2pm.
Jenny Griffiths, a spokesperson for Maelor Voluntary Service, said they hope as many staff as possible will join them, adding, “The more the merrier!”

Wrexham Announces Its Bid for UK City of Culture 2029!

Wrexham is delighted to announce its intention to bid once again for the title of UK City of Culture 2029, following its outstanding achievement in reaching the final stages of the last competition and finishing as runner-up to Bradford, the winner for 2025. Building on the wealth of experience gained from its previous bid, the whole county of Wrexham is more determined than ever to celebrate its unique culture, heritage, and energy through a vibrant and imaginative programme for 2029.
This bid is not just about culture, it’s about people. It’s the people of Wrexham who make it such a special and inspiring place, and their creativity, playfulness, warmth, and pride will be at the heart of the campaign. Together, they will build a stronger, more connected, and more dynamic Wrexham.
Securing the prestigious title of UK City of Culture will create jobs, attract investment, provide new creative spaces, and shape an exciting legacy for the county. More than a single year packed full of cultural activity, winning the title will unlock projects and opportunities that will continue to benefit Wrexham’s communities for many years to come.
The UK City of Culture competition, run every four years by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), celebrates creativity, heritage, and community spirit across the UK. The successful city is awarded the title for one year, during which it delivers a programme
of cultural events and culture-led regeneration that brings lasting social and economic benefits to the area.
Having seen first-hand the transformative impact of competing in the contest, Wrexham’s partners, stakeholders, and communities have united once again to form a City of Culture Board, chaired by Joanna Knight OBE. The Board operates under the newly established Wrexham Community & Culture Trust, which brings together 13 Trustees with expertise across arts and culture, sport, education, business, inclusion, and governance.
Their collective stewardship will help shape an ambitious, community-driven bid. The new campaign, Wrecsam2029, will showcase Wrexham’s distinctive character, playfulness, and creativity to the world.

LED-PRO Lenses For Safer Driving

As LED lighting becomes standard in streetlights and car headlights, many drivers, particularly older ones, are finding night driving harder. The bright, blue-tinted glare from modern LEDs can reduce contrast, cause dazzle, and make it difficult to recover vision after oncoming lights.
At the same time, the UK government is considering introducing mandatory sight tests for drivers aged 70 and over, to ensure eyesight remains safe for driving. For many, it’s a timely reminder that glare and night vision are key aspects of eye health.
What are LED-PRO lenses?
LED-PRO lenses are designed to combat the harsh glare of LED light. Rather than simply tinting the lens darker, they use advanced coatings that selectively filter the blue wavelengths most responsible for glare, while keeping colour balance natural. They also feature high-quality anti-reflective coatings to reduce distracting reflections.
Early wearer studies suggest that these lenses can shorten glare recovery time and make night driving more comfortable, especially under LED headlights. Unlike heavily tinted “night-driving glasses”, they don’t reduce the overall amount of light reaching the eye, crucial for safety in lowlight conditions.
Why glare gets worse with age
As we get older, the lenses inside our eyes become
less clear, scattering more light and increasing sensitivity to glare. Pupils react more slowly, and contrast sensitivity drops, all of which makes bright LED lights more uncomfortable and potentially dangerous when driving at night.
The upcoming changes for older drivers With the population living longer and driving later into life, proposed new sight tests for over-70s aim to improve road safety. Regular eye checks could help identify issues such as cataracts or glaucoma earlier, and optometrists can recommend specialist lenses like LED-PRO for those who struggle with glare.
A clearer road ahead
For drivers who find themselves squinting or dazzled by modern headlights, LED-PRO lenses could offer real relief. They won’t replace a proper eye examination or good driving habits, but they can make night driving more comfortable and confidenceinspiring.

It’s good to be back and into an exciting Autumn/Winter full of projects to prepare us for 2026!
Last month, we were at Commonwood Leisure in Holt who, with the backing of ‘This is Wrecsam’, have just launched Wrexham’s first outdoor Laser Tag – an interactive game where teams can battle each other on a custom assault course, before enjoying some great food, drink, or even glamping on-site at this award winning park. It’s always great to see new investment and an new attraction for the County!
With international visitor numbers on the rise too, the Local Authority and ‘This is Wrecsam’ have been doing a lot of work with Visit Wales and a company called UK Inbound to bring more travel agencies into Wrexham to see what the wider offer of the County is.
We know from feedback, that a lot of our international tourism centres upon the football club, but to maximise the benefit for Wrexham’s hospitality sector – it’s important that we also showcase reasons for longer stays in the area.
In October, we welcomed one group of agents from Holland, and arranged for a sunset kayak over the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (magnificent!), warm drinks at the Chapel Tearooms followed by dinner at the Bank Bistro ahead of a stay at the
Ramada (…and a few drinks at the Turf on the way). The feedback was brilliant - and several Wrexham County itineraries are likely to feature in 2026 onwards.
There’s more planned in January, with the team going to tourism exhibitions at the O2 London, the NEC and in Europe to promote more investment, stays and visits to Wrexham next year!
On the ground, we also launched our first official Wrexham Tour Guides training course last week! We have 12 passionate locals being trained up over the winter by the North Wales Tour Guides Association, to obtain a ‘white badge’, meaning that they’ll qualify to be able to offer walking tours to individuals and groups next year!
Finally, our tourism partnership ‘This is Wrecsam’ celebrate their 9th birthday soon – and were shortlisted in the Wrexham Business & Community Awards (WBCA) ‘Spirit of Wrexham’ award for services to the tourism sector!
As this magazine goes to print before the WBCA evening, I will report back whether we won in my January column!

Gardening Tips and Advice
December - Winter Frost
As we approach the shortest day of the year in December, you will need to work to keep you warm outside, such as digging and tree pruning. Check your winter protection and if you have a greenhouse make sure the heater is working. Hopefully there are not too many jobs left to do this year so you will have time for some fireside garden planning.
TOP 10 JOBS TO DO IN THE GARDEN THIS MONTH
1. Check your winter protection structures are still securely in place.
2. Check that greenhouse heaters are working.
3. Insulate outdoor taps and prevent ponds from freezing.
4. Prune open-grown apples and pears (but not those trained against walls).
5. Take hardwood cuttings.
6. Keep mice away from stored produce.
7. Reduce watering of houseplants.
8. Prune acers, birches and vines before Christmas to avoid bleeding.
9. Harvest leeks, parsnips, winter cabbage, sprouts and remaining root crops.
10. Deciduous trees and shrubs can still be planted and transplanted.
Maes y Pant Latest News by Chair Ian Happs
The weather feels quite wintery now, but the woodland still looks beautiful in its many autumn colours. 2025 been a fantastic year for fruiting trees and bushes, with a bumper apple crop in the meadow and lots of fruits and berries to help sustain wildlife through the coming months.
Volunteer days
The volunteers have been kept busy tidying and maintaining those areas of the site where we’ve planted young broadleaf trees. We’ve also been working on the garden by the car park and the paths, steps, play area and around the woodland gym. We’ve been delighted to welcome another Duke of Edinburgh Award volunteer on the team, as well as several other new members.
If you would like to join us, there are usually about 20 people on the second Saturday of every month, from 10am until 12.30pm. There are tasks suitable for all ages and abilities, and we always finish off with a hot drink and some cake. It’s a very sociable occasion and newcomers are always welcome.
The next volunteer session will be at 10am on Saturday 13th December. We meet next to the new storage container at the car park on Pant Lane in Gresford.
You will see the gazebo up and our Community Green Flag flying.

A Place Where Stories of Industry, Nature and People Come Together
The transformation of Stori Brymbo in Wrexham continues to gather pace, as this ambitious heritage and community project moves closer to opening its doors as a fully fledged visitor attraction in Spring 2026. Building on Brymbo’s incredible industrial and geological past, Stori Brymbo will tell the story of the people, the place, and the landscape that shaped one of Wales’s most fascinating sites. From the 314-million-yearold Fossil Forest buried beneath our feet, which is already open to the public on Sundays, to the Steelworks and Ironworks that once forged a thriving community above it.
The new attraction will blend heritage interpretation, immersive storytelling and hands-on experiences, bringing together science, nature and social history in a completely new way. Alongside its exhibition spaces, visitors will also be able to enjoy a welcoming café, a gallery, and a distinctive artisan and retail offering.
While work continues behind the scenes on the build-up to 2026, there’s still plenty happening right now for those who can’t wait to experience Stori Brymbo.
Each week, visitors can join Guided Fossil Forest Tours, meet our palaeontologist and see the latest discoveries at one of the UK’s most remarkable fossil sites.
And as we head into the festive season, there’s even more to enjoy. Christmas at Stori Brymbo will take place on Sunday 7th, 14th and 21st December, with three weekends full of family-friendly activities, from Junior Fossil Club Christmas Specials and festive activity trails to artisan markets and finishing with a visit from Santa’s float on the final Sunday before Christmas!
Wassailing
Following Christmas, we’ll be hosting one last big event before the focus turns fully to preparing for our grand opening. On Sunday 19th January 2025, we invite you to shake off the winter blues and join us for a community Wassail event. Wassailing is all about celebrating orchards and wishing for a good harvest. It’s a wonderful way to support our orchard project, meet neighbours, and enjoy some seasonal fun before the year ahead.
Every visit, event and volunteer hour helps build towards 2026 - supporting the creation of a lasting legacy that celebrates Brymbo’s story of resilience, regeneration and renewal.

Traditional Christmas Pudding
A rich, festive classic packed with dried fruits, warming spices, and a touch of nostalgia. I first made this recipe in catering college over 25 years ago and it’s stood the test of time!
This is best made ahead to allow the flavours to mature.
INGREDIENTS:
100g suet
50g plain flour
100g raisins
100g sultanas
50g currants
50g mixed peel
5g grated nutmeg
100g muscovado sugar
100g fresh breadcrumbs
25g ground almonds
60ml milk
2 eggs
250ml Guinness
75ml brandy
Zest and juice of ½ lemon
Zest and juice of ½ orange
Pinch of salt
COOK: 6-8 hours
METHOD:
1. Mix the dry ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the suet, flour, dried fruits, mixed peel, nutmeg, sugar, breadcrumbs, ground almonds, and salt.
2. Add the liquids: Beat the eggs and stir them in along with the milk, stout, brandy, lemon zest and juice, and orange zest and juice. Mix thoroughly until well combined.
3. Rest the mixture: Cover the bowl and leave in a cool place for 3-4 days to allow the flavours to develop.
4. Prepare for steaming: Spoon the mixture into greased pudding basins. Cover each with greased greaseproof paper and secure with string or foil.
5. Steam: Place the basins in a large pot with a trivet or upturned saucer at the bottom. Add boiling water to come halfway up the sides of the basins. Cover and steam gently for 6-8 hours, topping up with boiling water as needed.
6. Serve: Reheat before serving with brandy cream, brandy butter, or classic custard.

Seasonal Treats in December
In December, the culinary scene shifts to embrace the essence of winter. While fresh produce can be somewhat limited, there are still plenty of delightful options to savour during this holiday-packed month.
Root vegetables
Root vegetables like carrots, parsnips, turnips, and rutabagas are in season. Their natural sweetness and earthy flavours make them ideal for hearty stews, roasted dishes, and comforting soups.
Brussels sprouts
These little green veggies are at their peak in December. These small gems are best when roasted with a touch of olive oil, a sprinkle of salt, and maybe a drizzle of balsamic glaze.
Citrus fruits
Oranges, grapefruits, clementines, and lemons add zesty and refreshing notes to winter meals. They're perfect for citrus salads, freshly squeezed juices, or even a citrus-infused marinade for roasted meats.
Winter greens
Kale, chard, and spinach thrive in the cold weather, making them excellent choices for salads, stir-fries, and sautés. These leafy greens provide essential vitamins and a burst of green in your winter diet.
Pomegranates
These have ruby-red seeds that are sweet and tart. Perfect for adding a pop of flavour to your salads, cocktails, and desserts.
Nuts
Nuts play a significant role in many festive recipes. Walnuts, chestnuts, and hazelnuts are readily available, perfect for adding crunch and depth of flavour to biscuits, cakes, and stuffing. Great for snacking too.
From the wild
Wild herbs: Some hardy wild herbs can still be foraged, such as rosemary and thyme.
Seaweed: Along the UK's coastal regions, certain types of edible seaweed, like Dulse and Sea Lettuce, can be foraged year-round. They add a unique flavour to dishes and are often used in soups and salads.

As we move through autumn into winter, annual events come into sharp focus. I was honoured to attend the annual Remembrance Service at the RWF memorial at Bodhyfryd. It was a poignant service attended by civic leaders, representatives of our armed forces as well as community organisations. It was a fitting tribute to the fallen. I joined veterans at the War Memorial Club afterwards. In Westminster, it was my privilege to leave a tribute in Parliament's Constituency Garden of Remembrance on behalf of the people of Wrexham.
The new CanfodAu building at Wrexham University is impressive not least because of its distinctive gold exterior. It marks an important step for Wrexham and North Wales in advanced manufacturing, green technology, and industry-led research and development. I was delighted to find out more about the cutting-edge research there at the recent opening. I look forward to seeing how it will develop.
Black Lane School in Pentre Broughton, which I have previously visited, has been recognised as the Best Breakfast Club in Wales at the Kellogg’s Breakfast Club Awards at the Houses of Parliament. Breakfast clubs provide opportunities for volunteering and leadership which will help the children’s development and futures. They enable interaction between different year groups, helping to support those social skills and interactions which are so important. It was brilliant to host the awards and acknowledge the incredible work of the staff who run them.
The UK City of Culture 2029 bid process has been announced, and Wrexham is going for it! The team have been working hard for months, and a number of events and initiatives are already in motion and planned. The bid has my full support and let's all get behind it. We had a successful summer with the National Eisteddfod and next year marks the commemoration of 1876 Year of Wonder. 1876 saw the formation of the Football Association of Wales, the opening of the Ruabon Road Cemetery, the four-month long Art Treasures and Industrial Exhibition (now marked by a beautiful mural under the arch on Argyle Street), the first National Eisteddfod ever held in Wrexham and the tram system. There will be plenty to look forward to as part of that.

Two organisations that are an essential and integral part of Wrexham life recently held their AGMs. It was a real pleasure to be asked to be guest speaker at AVOW’s (Association of Voluntary Organisations in Wrexham) AGM.
Ever since I was first elected to the Senedd in 2007, AVOW has been ever present in Wrexham, supporting the voluntary sector and serving the community.
Volunteers are often the unsung heroes who dedicate their time, energy and passion to making a difference. Their selfless acts of kindness and unwavering commitment helps to sustain large parts of our society, fostering a spirit of unity and compassion.
It is estimated that in Wales, 1 in 3 people undertake formal volunteering with charities and other bodies, but many more are known to be volunteering informally in the hearts of their communities.
AVOW has always done a tremendous job supporting and co-ordinating the many third sector organisations and charities we have here in the county.
There are exciting times ahead with the planned regeneration of Ty AVOW, AVOW’s home in Wrexham.I trust the revamp will safeguard and support the expansive voluntary and community sector in Wrexham for years to come.
The second AGM I attended was the Wrexham Miners Project. George Powell and the team have done an incredible job in recent years. As well as helping preserve our mining heritage,
they have brought a derelict listed building that was under threat of destruction back to life and turned it into a thriving community hub.
The Miners Rescue Station, located on Maesgwyn Road, now houses a café, museum, an arts and events space and a memorial in remembrance of the 266 miners who died in the Gresford Colliery Disaster.
It was lovely to see so many people in attendance at the AGM and particularly interesting to hear from the charity’s patron, Humphrey Ker, as well as their new ambassador, former Wrexham AFC player, Mickey Thomas.
The progress George and the team have made is truly remarkable. However, the restoration and work at the Miners Station is ongoing and I will continue to do all I can to support the Wrexham Miners Project.

Parking
Again, parking issues around the village have been causing a number of problems. Wrexham, as an authority, currently only have five enforcement officers and therefore, continual patrolling of these issues in Rossett are extremely difficult. However, over the past 12 months they have visited Rossett and the Green on 25 occasions. Parking on pavements and speeding is a police matter and we continue to ask for further action to be taken on this by North Wales Police. In relation to speeding in the 20 mph residential areas, we have written to the Police and Crime Commissioner requesting more action be taken. Our observations show that the worst offenders are local residents who have little regard for the given speed limits in the area.
Park railings
The barriers on the Holt Road found at the entrances to the plantation have been replaced or repaired. The set nearest the junction with the main Wrexham Road will be replaced in due course and a new barrier has been ordered.
Resurfacing Chester Road
A number of questions have been asked about the layout of road markings after the completion of resurfacing works on the main road. Officers have explained that the 20mph speed limit is supported by the hatching which visually narrows the carriageway and naturally reduces vehicle speeds and the temptation for overtaking. Keeping the hatching is also in line with national guidance.
Park Lane
Street Scene officers are to carry out pot hole repairs on Park Lane. Hafren Dyfrdwy have been asked to investigate the water leak in this area, which is affecting the road surface, and get to the root of the problem. We have again stressed the urgency of the need for white lines at the junction with the Holt Road.
Alyn Family Doctors
Following representations, Alyn Family Doctors are planning to improve the disabled access to the Station Road Surgery for users of mobility scooters and wheel chairs, and hope to have a scheme implemented in the new year.

Beryl Blackmore Councillor for Marford & Hoseley
I have recently attended Council meetings in Planning and Employment, and a Business and Investment Scrutiny Committee - which concentrated very much on the application for City of Culture 2029, due to the success of the Wrexham Eisteddfod. It is hoped the villages will engage with the same enthusiasm. Watch for more news via the media and your Community Councils.
A consultation started on 27 October to ask residents’ opinion regarding extending the double yellow lines in Claypit Lane, from the Church, to improve safety. I hope to have the results this month.
Ward issues have been a request to enquire what is happening at The Trevor Arms. I have contacted the company, but sadly had no response. I have also been told that squatters are present. I contacted Wrexham Public Protection, and they have promised to visit immediately. Please do let me know if problems continue and I will continue to try to find out more information on any refurbishment.
Currently, at this time of the year, blocked drains and leaves are high on the complaints list with Environmental saying they are on the case. Any unadopted roads in Marford will not display 20mph but warning signs will stay showing any approach to 30mph roads. The annual Remembrance Service in All Saints was well attended with many young people present. The poppies on display looked lovely! I have asked for more next year to continue to the bottom of the hill.
I depend very much on EssentialsMAG to get information out. I believe most houses have it delivered. And Facebook helps too, which is good, but is often a place for unkind words. I answer every email and message I receive, so if you tell me on Facebook that I don't reply then please check you have the correct email. It's at the bottom of this page and my details are on Wrexham web site.

All our village organisations are very supportive including the Retirement club, Marford Caffi and Exercise group, who have not long been to the Theatre to see Miss Saigon. It was amazing!
There is also the WI, who do more than make jam, plus all the young people's clubs and our Childcare Facilities. We are very lucky.

As we come to the end of another busy year, I want to thank everyone who has played a part in village life throughout 2025. Whether through volunteering, supporting local activities, or simply helping neighbours, your efforts continue to make Gresford such a special and close-knit community.
I’m looking forward to catching up with many of you as I deliver my Christmas card around the village this month - designed by the talented pupils at All Saints School, who have once again captured the festive spirit beautifully.
The annual Santa Float
One of the most anticipated events of the year is fast approaching - the annual Santa Float, which will be touring the village on Friday 19th December.
It’s always wonderful to see families lining the streets, children waving, and the sense of excitement that fills the air. Please do give them a wave (and perhaps a donation if you’re able) when Santa makes his way through Gresford. The funds raised go towards supporting local causes and keeping traditions like this alive for the future.
Seasonal Preparations
As temperatures drop, please take extra care when out and about - especially on icy pavements and untreated roads. The Council
continues to monitor gritting routes and salt bin levels, but if you spot an area that needs attention, please let me know so I can report it promptly.
It’s also a good time to look out for neighbours who may need a bit of help, whether with shopping, clearing paths, or simply some friendly company over a cup of tea. Those small acts of kindness make a big difference during the winter months.
Looking Ahead to 2026
Council work is already turning toward next year’s priorities. We’ll continue to focus on road safety, maintenance, and supporting local events. Your feedback and ideas are always welcome.
