Think Expectations

What past experiences might affect how they feel? What hopes might they have? Discuss what you learned from your past experience and how you and others can apply that learning experience to this new course. The past experiences that I had from a previous class occurred with an English Literature and Composition course in high school. At the time, I was nervous with the teacher (i.e. Mr. Smith) known for being a tough grader and requiring more of everyone. I needed a good grade in this class to be accepted to the various colleges I was applying for. The fear that I had is he would evaluate me to hard and a mediocre grade could adversely limit my choices. To prevent this I decided that I must be strong, focused and ask lots of questions. This would help to improve my overall amounts of learning comprehension. Once I began working on different assignments is when I realized that Mr. Smith was requiring more of me. This meant that I was rewriting various projects and changing the language / style. In the beginning, I felt that he was very picky about such trivial items. Then, one day he gave me an assignment to write about two pre–assigned quotes. These include:

My College Experience

Throughout my lifetime I have listened to people reflect back on their college experiences and explain how college is supposed to be "the best experience of your life." The summer after my senior year I use to try and imagine what my first semester was going to be like based on what I had heard people talk about in the past. After my first semester at NC State I realized that I couldn't fully understand what college was like until I experienced it for myself. I can remember missing 8:05 classes because I stayed out too late the night before. In high school the teacher would constantly remind the students when certain assignments were due, but this was not the case in college. I learned that the hard way my first semester. Sometimes I forgot to turn in an assignment because I didn't properly read my syllabus and my professor never mentioned it. These were all new problems that could have easily let escalate without taking the proper actions. For the most part I was doing fairly well but a few of my grades began to plummet. I was losing the confidence in myself and started to wonder if going to college had been the best decision. The time had come for me to grow up and become an adult even I didn't feel the time was right. I immediately began attending tutoring sessions, working with peers and also keeping a daily to–do list. These factors were the eventually led to drastic improvement and success. After my first semester I learned how better manage my time, take advantage of campus resources and also how to organize myself better. These struggles also taught me that sometimes I try and rush through things instead of taking my time. When I first come to Saint Cloud High School, I was uncertain of how I would fit into the world of education as a teacher, in fact, this was my first teaching practice. After completing a few observations, I changed my view and recognized my teaching abilities. I was able to learn many different things that will be helpful to me when I become a certified teacher someday. Although I could face many possible challenges in the classroom, I have many of the strengths it takes to be a good teacher. There were many times during this field training that gave me a broad idea of how the ordinary life of a teacher would go. Similarly, I got a profound sense of how the classroom environment is for most instructors. In general, I believe this was a pleasant experience for me, and I learned a lot in such a brief period. What I have learned about research is that it is a process, a scientific process that psychologist and scientist develop that includes many different approaches and that is carefully peer reviewed and evaluated. There is what is called the Scientific Approach where scientist have an idea or theory and based on their observation will either support the theory or the theory can be falsified by their peers. Data also goes through a review period before it is published in a scientific journal by scientist who have the knowledge and expertise to evaluate it. I also learned the difference between basic and applied research where basic research focuses mostly on things such as emotion, cognition, social behavior, personality development, learning, and neuropsychology. Basic research will be more helpful for answering fundamental questions about the nature of behavior. Applied research however, addresses more of a specific problem with a possible solution. Program evaluation covers a large area of applied research. Program evaluation assesses the social reforms and innovations that occur in government, education, the criminal justice system, industry, health care, and mental health institutions. When discussing behavioral research it is imperative to note the precedents that it has in many fields and the significance of the applications to public policy. I believe my research interests lie within the American South. I am fascinated by the historic and economic elements of the region that I call home. I personally believe that learning about your interests is important but the strengths, values, and limitations that you bring to the table are more important. Describe the research experiences you have had up to now. During the summer between my sophomore and junior year of undergrad at the University of South Carolina, I was accepted into the Ronald E. McNair Post–Baccalaureate Achievement Program. The program was my first introduction into the world of academic research and created a strong foundation for me to build upon as I moved forward. Because of this there was a learning curve I had to overcome in order to conduct my research, but I feel that this on–hands learning greatly benefited me. By learning the software while using data that I had gathered and knew in–depth to conduct analyses that were crucial to my project, I believe that I came to understand the processes of the software much better than I would have in the classroom. My hypotheses for this project posited that areas with greater numbers of community service programs would have lower rates of crime, both violent and property. The results came to show a very different picture: areas with high crime rates had a greater number of programs, centralized around larger urban areas. These results initially confused me, but it became apparent that my hypothesis was based on the assumption that these community programs were enacted as preventative measures and preceded the high crime rate. Instead, these programs arose as a way to combat and counter the symptoms and byproducts that arise from higher crime rates. While these results were the opposite of what I had hypothesized, I was glad that they were so. It showed me the research does not always follow the path you believe it will and that the results you do get can show something more important than what you had hoped it would. Throughout my writing experience or process I have struggled with writing especially using details or really expressing myself my work. In this course Facts & Fiction: Portraits in World Art I expect to gain more knowledge on how to write a perfectessay, story, letter, and assignment. I expect to learn new genres and rhetorical situations. I also think my writing will improve academically and I will develop my skills in writing. Reading and writing were two things my parents use to always push me to improve and work on more often. They always told me they are the essentials of everything thing. Even though I disliked both at a young age as I grew older I preferred writing because I can always change the way I write and write from my point of view, really be creative with it and prove my point. Growing up I always loved writing short stories especially scary stories. I always was creative with them and even made them realistic. To write an essay I usually have a couple of steps writing an outline, and the thesis a draft and finally a final draft. The most difficult part about this is writing the thesis because the whole essay revolves the thesis because it summarizes the whole essay. At the end of some essays, I had to use citations to do that there were many websites that helped me cite sources such as easybib which was a really simple process. So, citing sources was one of the easiest things about writing the essay.

Writing to a teacher is way more complex then writing to a fried or a family member. Writing to a teacher is way more complex, I must make sure that everything is on point or it reaches the state of protection. Going back to what were my beliefs about experience and learning meant to me, I still feel that experience and learning has always been a part of life. We learn in different ways and process different understandings differently. But as I furthered my knowledge on how experience and learning in adulthood are understood, I have learned much more. Bringing in your own paycheck helps students learn to effectively manage their money and rely on themselves and not their parents. You will learn very quickly the importance of working as a team and having good communication skills. I have most definitely had some harsh times in high school, whether that's academically or socially. Some of the things that I struggled with in my high school experience was learning how to study, balancing work and school, and finding a group of people to call your own.

One of my most challenging high school experiences were balancing study time. Staying organized enough to get everything done is a struggle. In class it is sometimes hard to know which notes are important or not. With there being more work and tests you have to have strong study skills. The biggest thing is that nobody is going to force you to study, its your decision alone. It's hard when you have assignments in different classes with the same deadline, but it can be made easier if you break it down into more manageable pieces. I have proactively engaged in research activity throughout my undergraduate program. I had my first research experience in Dr. B Anand's lab, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati, during my second year. The aim of the project was to study the non–fluorescent beta–barrel structured proteins and engineer its amino acid sequence to make them into fluorescent ones. I was challenged with cloning ydeH gene into the pJT118 plasmids which are green light sensitive. The ydeH gene produces a protein named diguanylate cyclase, which induces the production of c–di–GMP in Rosetta strain. This project gave me an opportunity to participate and win silver at International Bio–molecular design competition (BIOMOD) 2012 held at Wyss Institute, Harvard University, USA. Most of the molecular genetic techniques were extensively used in my project. During this internship, apart from gaining deeper technical experience, I realized that I could work on a research problem with a certain degree of independence, figuring out right approaches and proposing useful experiments. We all want different things out of life; however, I believe everyone shares one common goal: to make an impact in this life. When it was time for me to choose my way of doing so, without a doubt, I chose medicine. From both my professional and academic experiences I have acquired invaluable knowledge and experience that I am confident have more than prepared me for an Information Officer I position with the California Department of Insurance. With a bachelor's degree in communication from a top California university and practice in both the private and public sector, I have developed a plethora of skills in the realm of communications, including engaging with clients through various channels, leading key presentations to large groups of audiences, and collaborating successfully with other departments and team members.

It has been tough gaining School experience, however; my old primary school was very nice in allowing me to shadow different teachers to see if teaching is the right career path for me. I previously gained work experience in a school 8 years ago nevertheless, things have changed intensely. Technology is swiftly changing and children often use laptops as well as interactive whiteboards to increase their development in learning. I have been trying to gain as much experience as possible however, due to work commitments, I have only been able to shadow teachers whilst I have taken holiday from my current job. Helping teachers in my old Primary school was fantastic as I was able to teach children the basics such as reading or spelling. I was set a task to determine how well children were reading and to make notes in their reading diaries to allow parents to see how well their child has developed. Whilst the children were reading I would help them voice certain words that they found tough. I also was in a year three class and the teacher set them a Maths task I was there to help and make notes in the book to help children develop. I have seen them progress to their full potential and I still help them. They have found learning during the weekend very helpful as they have been assured enough to ask me countless questions. Gaining school experience and helping family/friends has inspired me to apply for teacher training as I am currently retaking my GCSE Science to help me gain a C or above and have already passed my QTS for Literacy and Numeracy. Overall, I feel that I have many skills which would inspire me to help young pupils develop. Gaining school work experience as well as gaining skills from the workplace has inspired me to make School an enjoyable place for children
