In the contemporary world, the architecture and construction should answer to more than the needs of its current users or do more than just fitting in its current conditions. With the emerging global issues and problems of the new society, architecture is challenged to become a solution that adapts resilience and radicalness, that provides versatility, sensitivity and sustainability. This portfolio experiments on these virtues in different contexts using the Italian cities as its main research ground.

The site of the project breaks the continuity of the city’s grid pattern along 3 streets, filling their frames with... nothing.

3 The idea is to create a subject for the frames created by the 3 interrupted streets. A distinctive silhouette that acts as an identifier of the project, inviting people to explore the social space at its heart.

Seems like I forgot my last turn, my last step. I looked around, absent minded, then to my died phone... The fear of getting lost, that uncomforting feeling you get in an unfamiliar place filled me. Then there it was across the street. That stepping, bursting, moving substance...

Co-housing represent a new solution to social living, allowing small communities to live closer to one another, sharing meals and organizing events. But imagine having to cook for 100 people, or cleaning a huge complex, trying to organize events around the needs and timetables of 80-100 people. This is not a sustainable model. For this reason, it is chosen to divide the project into 4 equal buildings, each containing 20 people at full capacity.

What is it that combine us, makes this all stay together here? It is more than just mortar that is binding, or the porticoes run all around. No, it is something to do with our dynamic, our way of living.

CONTRAPOINT Urban Design Atelier | Reinventing City Living Prof. Francesca Frassoldati Prof. Chiara Lucchini Bachelor Project | Semester V | 2019-2020 Hotel and Commerce Complex | Via Sacchi | Torino | Italy Collaborators: Ege Can Yazıcı | Jana Basbous | Yangchang Li | Wenjun Feng Located on the side of rail tracks near Porta Nuova, this site is used as a car park and contained many abandoned buildings in it. This gap in the dense urban environment, an underutilized space with poor appearance, has a great potential considering its proximity to the main station and its road axis Via Sacchi with its porticoed commercial ground floors. Lack of several services such as high-quality hotels, restaurants and cafe hubs in the area drove our reasons for functions in the re-urbanization of this space as well as the “coolness” effect that we tried to create for its marketing image.

Its my first glance to the city as the train approached to the station, a crystal mountain reminding the alps nearby... many people was in its small piazza, such a small corner filled in a such lively manner

PROJECT MODEL

Previous wall around the site on Via Sacchi is disrupted according to the city grid to attract people inside the piazza and unify the area with the neighbourhood.

New urban furniture and greenery are introduced creating various spaces for different functions. In order not to close the visual connection of the site to the railway semi-transparent separations with its integrated seating areas are realized. This separation encloses the whole space with its similar architectural language.

Design, collapsing the street corner inwards, draw the community in. Working with our new concept for Piazza Barcellona, our proposal aims to add colour and greenery to San Donato and create inviting multi-use spaces for everyone to enjoy, while staying true to San Donato’s industrial heritage.

Height Analysis

Looking at the average height of surrounding structures it is chosen a height that remained harmonious with the other buildings.

Material Analysis Observing the material range, clay bricks and tiles for the facade are decided on, while also echoing the industrial past of San Donato by using a metallic curvilinear roof.

In order to study the technological solution and test its feasibility 1:1 physical model of a small portion of the external facade is constructed. In this adaptation new dimension for the bricks and the metal bars are decided according to local building market.

PIAZZA BARCELLONA Adapting Barcelona’s urban pattern to the Piazza, reviving a once lively urban section

The concept for Piazza Barcellona is influenced by its namesake in both form and function. The tree line promenade provides a place for people to rest and stroll. Multi-use pavilions along this promenade are designed for market as well as for other future functions. In the centre an adaptable open space is placed for socializing and playing, while the large steps reaching to it provide a stadium style seating.

Bologna is a city full with universities and youngsters, yet its population is growing older every day. The modern world bears new challenges for better living standards, especially for the older and more vulnerable part of our society. Co-housing for elderly aims for a lifestyle that encourages cooperation and interaction, while fully respecting the need of privacy. Common spaces were designed in order to promote the relationships between the co-owners. Green spaces evenly distributed within the complex provide everyone with a proximate contact of nature. All common rooms, dining, terraces, green house offers a view one of the important historical buildings of Bologna: Palazzo Bentivoglio. The recession in the lot provides the dense local area with a new piazza that locates between the building and the palazzo.

People used to sit on the benches across the street turning their backs towards the historic Palazzo Bentivoglio. Cafe in the old complex turned its windows towards the inner portico.

This dormitory with its responsive design, thrives to use its locations in favour of the user comfort.

REPORT

The company involved me into the projects in all different levels, from beginning design choices to the detailed technical solutions. I had a chance to prepare client presentations involving main elements such as plans, elevations, sections, as well as, technical data sheets, heating electrical solutions, elaborate final design renders etc. Mainly, I had worked on three different projects, one of them involving two different buildings within.

First project concerned the restoration of a storage and office for a company dealing with cheese business. The main challenge was building an independent steel structure (with I beams) that will become the mezzanine over the storage area for the office. After studying on the technical solutions, I drew the schemes for inlay and prepared presentation pdfs.

Con la presente si certifica che la sig.ra Esra Yaman ha effettuato e completato proficuamente il suo tirocinio sotto la mia supervisione per un periodo di 300 ore dal 16/03/2020 al 22/05/2020 Durante il suo tirocinio, sono stati affrontati diversi argomenti di natura progettuale architettonica, strutturale ed esecutiva su nostri interventi da realizzarsi in Torino e nella regione Valle d’Aosta.

Le tematiche hanno affrontato diversi argomenti spaziando dall’inserimento del progetto nel contesto urbano , alla definizione del particolare costruttivo e alla progettazione di manufatti inseriti in contesti montani e di particolare pregio soggetti anche a pareri di sovrintendenza.

Ha lavorato senza problemi su problematiche anche molto impegnative di composizione architettonica e progettazione esecutiva , partendo dalla visione progettuale generale dell’edificio per arrivare alla definizione particolare dei dettagli esecutivi. Ha dimostrato particolari capacità in relazione alla presentazione del progetto e alla trasmissione delle proposte al cliente creando delle immagini di progetto molto significative e efficaci utilizzando vari software di disegno come Autocad, SketchUp, Photoshop, Indesign e 3dsMax Ha mostrato grande impegno e dedizione durante tutto il processo progettuale anche in relazione a tempi ristretti di consegna e considerevole mole di lavoro assegnatale. Per quanto ci riguarda l’esperienza professionale maturata è risultata molto positiva e proficua .

Second project was about the renovation of Corso Verona 44 with the construction of a new one-story building in the cortile. This was the main project that I worked on during my internship. My task started by creating the 3d model of the existing situation “stato di fatto” and the renovated roof idea using the surveys and existing plans. By doing this I had a chance to examine the detailed roof solution with zinc metal sheet. After the client decided on making it an apartment for students, I studied deeper the solution for a student apartment with two single rooms. For its façade we decided on a modern yet modest solution that would be in harmony with the street façade. The use of same roof style and color palette of black and yellow enhanced this relation. Several technical solutions that we studied involved Petersen Tegl®, Equitone®, and different options for perforated metal sheets. Later, I studied several solutions for the street façade of the main building, using a more traditional organization method yet very modern materials and architectural language. All this process is conducted through both in plan, elevation, section level in AutoCAD, 3d level in SketchUp and rendering level in 3dsMax and Photoshop.

Final products from 1:20 details into 1:100 general schemes and rendered solutions are presented to the client.

During my internship in A.E.M. Architecture, Consultancy I had a chance to work on two major projects: First one is the Yahsi Complex composed of a hotel, 16 villas and 29 apartment complexes and the other project is a medical clinic in Eskiçeşme, Bodrum. I was mainly involved in design process, planning process, 3d construction and post products. I had a chance to work mostly with AutoCAD, Sketchup, Photoshop and InDesign.

The first design task was to create options for the apartment complexes, each two-story block consisting of 110 and 100 square meter flats. All the options kept the feature of and inner garden on top of which consisted also the entrance to the upper flat. Later, these options were introduced to the client. Consequently, I studied one of the villa types on the upper hills, creating the greatest orientation and structure possible for bringing the bay and sea view into living areas and the rooms.

In the Private Medical Clinic project, the biggest aim of the design was to create a set of blocks that can later be adaptable to become a bigger unified complex by enclosing the courtyards. This led me to deeper study not only the current condition and the needs of the building but also the possible future adaptations. All spaces designed especially attentive to disability and high comfort standards.

The buildings, while staying true to the heritage of historic Bodrum building types, featured some new elements to contribute to their contemporary character and design.

In the summer of my first year in bachelor’s degree, I had an opportunity to work with the Sakalar Architecture Engineering (Sakalar Mimarlık Mühendislik İnşaat Ltd. Şti.). During my internship I worked on residential projects and a winter garden which was also to be used as a homeopathic doctor’s office. For these projects I had an opportunity to work both in office and on the construction site. I worked on plans, 3D and material analysis for these projects as well as preparing client presentations.

My first task was to prepare different options for the Önderhan Villas plans which was followed by the decision of a final plan and designing of its exterior with different building envelopes. Different selection of materials was applied to each option. Moreover, the garden design for each option was prepared.

My final task was a winter garden inside a private property with the villa of the owner. This building also planned to function as an office for a homeopathic doctor. In this project I had a chance to work individually for the whole design and planning process while my supervisor gave me critics throughout the process. Furthermore, I had the chance to be on the construction site which helped me understand the project from its initial ideas until its realization.

REPORT: A NEW OF THINKING

In a period of crisis such as the one we are in at our contemporary age, we need a game-changer condition in order to cope up. Alessandro Melis, who is the founder of Heliopolis 21, director of the Cluster for Sustainable Cities, starter of Media Hub in University of Portsmouth and current curator of Italian pavilion in La Biennale di Venezia starts to address this issue by defining what a crisis is, what its relationship with architecture is and then discusses the means of dealing with the crisis.

When we talk about the crisis, first thing that we should consider is the origin, the causes of the crisis, not the consequences. Although media portrays the climate change as a mere hypothesis today, there are strong scientific evidences that supports its factuality. For instance, hockey stick which is a diagram published by Michael Mann and his colleagues in 1999, stands as the first empiric demonstration of global warming, its existence, and its effects due to entropic actions.

Nature itself helps us better understand climate change: It is possible to find traces of the past climate thanks to trees, corals Hockey Stick, Mann, Michael E.; Bradley, drillings in the polar ice shows us many evidences.

What does all this have to do with the architecture? Planners have the major role in this situation when it is considered that construction market on its own is the first cause of the CO2 emission. This connection even deepens when we also take into account the organization and design of cities and their transportation systems, which lay within the field of architecture and design. So, the impact of design grows around 60% of the emission. Consequently, the designers, architects and planners have the major role in this crisis. Recognizing our great impact as architects and designers, we can build a vision and make conscious choices to transform our field.

According to impossible equation by Jonathan Foley we are at the limit of the survival on this planet.

The sources decrease as the population grows. Cities are growing as see levels and desertification take way the land. Considering this “impossibility”, linear and non-linear thinking is the core of this discussion. Can we overcome this course of events? According to Melis the answer is yes, with the solution of the future city that has three main characteristics: compactness, resilience and radicalness.

The work of an architect today responds to a market that is asking for a certain delivery. However, this is a linear way of thinking. The other aspect, the game-changer view does not dwell on the operativity.

It is the possibility to link the correct perception of the city to the consequences of crisis. It is a way of thinking that challenges the current market and decision-makers, and that shows them the change is more advantageous than the status quo. Furthermore, the world is in the need of a new generation of architects and game-changers, that are able to change the society from its roots, starting from arts, technology and science using transdisciplinary knowledge. Planners should undertake the role of connector of the different knowledge sources. Thus, the city of future will be a whole new entity than what we perceive as city today and our creative will be a part of the ecological system itself.
