PETITION TO SAVE THE CRESSET Like everyone else ESP was gutted to hear that The Cresset’s closing the theatre side of its operation with the last show pulling down the curtain on June 26. Since The Broadway shut this has been the city’s main large scale theatre so it’s a real blow after 32 years. It’s still a hot topic but local people dismayed to hear the news soon started taking action. If you want to show your support join the Facebook page ‘Keep the Cresset Open For Gigs’ and see if people power can help! All other aspects of The Cresset will carry on as normal and it’s still available for hire and all existing bookings for weddings, conferences and room hire are unaffected. If you bought tickets for shows beyond June 26 including Jimmy Carr, Jethro, Swan Lake and Abba Mania, you’ll automatically be refunded but if you paid in cash you need to go to the box office with your tickets. SHANNON’S BALL Last month we told you about Shannon Corr, the brave teenager from Peterborough who’s currently battling bone cancer. The former dancer has had to have a leg amputated and is trying to raise £30,000 for a prosthetic limb to enable her to resume dancing. To help her raise the cash, a ball and auction will be held at the Sibson Inn on July 3 – get your glad rags on and help Shannon dance again! Shannon’s still undergoing treatment, but has started to have a practice leg fitted. We’ve also heard that Heather Mills has been in touch and kindly offered Shannon some advice and is hoping to make it to the ball herself to show her support. CHARITY DISCO Melanie Giddings has been in touch – she’s holding a charity disco to raise money for the Papworth Hospital Charity. She’s trying to raise awareness of the condition Narcolepsy, which her daughter’s recently been diagnosed with. STILTON CHEESE ROLLING The famous Stilton cheese rolling competition is back on May 3. STARLIGHT WALK FOR CANCER RESEARCH UK The second annual Starlight Walk in Bourne is back to raise those much needed funds for Cancer Research UK. A whopping £20,000 was raised last year by the 350 women who walked the 13 miles throughout Bourne and the surrounding villages, and this year even more ladies are being encouraged to do the same. The walk starts at midnight on June 18 from the centre of Bourne, and all money raised will go towards life saving research at the Cambridge Research Institute. SPALDING FLOWER PARADE Spalding’s famous flower parade is back this year with its beautifully constructed flower floats, special acts and performances. The floats will be decorated with thousands of tulip heads, accompanied by marching bands, plenty of music and dancers. You can get the full parade experience and view all the preparations at the Springfields Gardens and arena site. The parade leaves from there at 2pm and makes its three mile journey around the Spalding town centre in spectacular style. PETITION TO SAVE MAMA’S Mama Liz’s Voodoo Lounge in Stamford has launched a petition to save its live entertainment. South Kesteven District Council is taking action against the venue following complaints about noise levels from some local people and it could see the venue lose its entertainment licence. Emcee productions are looking for new talented cast members for their new musical cabaret show. The new production will involve a variety of songs and musical numbers from Broadway and West End favourites. CHARITY OF THE YEAR A total of £1,600 has been raised by Springfields official charity of the year on its first weekend of fundraising at the Springfields Outlet Shopping and Festival Gardens in Spalding. The people who were working in support for Help for Heroes have raised those much needed funds providing direct support to those servicemen and women in the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The fundraising got off to a fantastic start thanks to the generosity of visitors. Captain Eddie Boyce and his wife Lorraine led the fundraising supporting Help for Heroes, Captain Boyce has been a soldier for more then 34 years, and approached Springfields as they had heard about the popularity of the centre. The money that was raised was from selling Help for Heroes merchandise, including tshirts, scarves, key rings, cufflinks etc. Captain Boyce commented “ The support from members of the public and staff over the Easter weekend was really good, and it was very encouraging to see such strong support for Help for Heroes”. MASQUERADE GOLDEN BALL Sisters Claire Hankins and Sallie Fenwick have added a masquerade theme to this year’s Golden Ball and Face of ESP Tori Bradshaw will be a special guest. The popular annual event’s held as a thank you for the care given to their father at the city’s Sue Ryder Care Thorpe Hall Hospice. Claire told ESP – “We really wanted to do something for the hospice after our dad’s stay at Thorpe Hall. This fantastic tribute band are renowned for selling out at their shows, and are back by popular demand. Bootleg Abba formed in 1996 and have been enjoying success all around the world, they’ve performed at the Forum in London, and also for the BBC as part of their run up to the Eurovision Song Contest. They give audiences a fantastic show, manage to re-create the live sound and studio recordings of Abba, and definitely do not disappoint! PASADENA ROOF ORCHESTRA The Pasadena Roof Orchestra is back to delight audiences with their mix of swing and hot dance music. They’ve stunned audiences all over the world, and are introducing new generations of young musicians to swing music. On the evening of Sunday June 27 the park hosts its highly popular classical music evening featuring Orchestra da Camera and other national as well as local acts. Saturday July 3 and Sunday July 4 see the city's Heritage Festival take centre stage in the Peterborough Cathedral precincts and the newly re-opened Cathedral Square. The festival's theme is Peterborough at War and features encampments and displays from some of the country's top historical re-enactors as well as falconry displays, live period music, a local history fair and a period market.
FESTIVAL FEVER HOTS UP Stavros Flatley from Britain’s Got Talent, Monty Python star Terry Jones, X Factor's Nicole Lawrence and BBC presenter Sarah Kennedy are all lined up to entertain the crowds at this year’s Peterborough Festival.

ROUND TABLE BOYS’ (CRAZY) NIGHT IN Up until now a round table is something I insist on when dining out with friends, as it creates atmosphere and it’s easier to reach over and eat girls’ food. But apparently there are Round table clubs where men meet, drink beer and raise lots of money for worthy causes. Sounds civilized so I figured I should accept an invite to the 60th Charter Night (whatever that means) at the (wait for it) RTBI Area 24 & Peterborough & District Round Table 284. A marketable name if ever I heard one… Anyway, I wasn’t sure what to expect but I knew there’d be a three-course meal and I knew my good friend Keith Dalton was also invited for the first time, so at least I could fill my belly and have decent conversation. www.es p m ag .co.u k ( May )
I was shown to my table by Mark Wells, chairman of Peterborough 284 and glanced at my invite which read: ‘Pep Ciparno’. Good start I thought, they can’t even get my name right. Then, once we all sat down, the weird stuff began. The best way for you to get a feel for this strange but quite welcoming experience is for me to list what took place during the next few hours. Here you go: • Pea shooting one another. Everyone was given one and you were encouraged to use it and fire balls of paper at other tables. • Nassington and Yarwell brass band were playing and very good they were too. • Men with grey hair, medals and some with big bellies standing on chairs singing along to the National Anthem and Rule Britannia. • A blow-up lamb sat on the head table all night. • Some men danced the can-can with waitresses. Other things I remember from the evening were a scrumptious apple pie for dessert, some Irish guy buying me a Guinness and guest speaker Ian Richards, who was an excellent comedian.
I went home confused. On one hand I came to the conclusion I was in the middle of a bunch of middle-aged men who clearly don’t get out much. But on the other hand, I actually had a really good night and found myself wanting to know more about Round table. My research revealed it was started in the 1920s by Louis Marchesi. He sounds of Italian parentage so straight away I wanted to learn more. Louis wanted to establish something like the Rotary but for young people. The aim was to fundraise but have fun doing it – and Peterborough Round table certainly know how to do that! They’ve raised thousands of pounds at Firework Fiesta over the years and when they’re not helping local causes members have enjoyed activities including jet skiing, bowling, canoeing, paint ball, pitch and putt, snooker and trips to the Beer Festival. A new generation of members is needed though; Mark himself is a young man and hopes to attract younger faces to the club. You can email him wells_mark@sky.com. ANYONE WANNA SWAP BMX BANDITS? It was one of the must-see films of the 1980s when BMX bikes were all the rage (I had a Raleigh Chrome Burner) and when Nicole Kidman spoke in her native Australian accent (my crush on her started in this film) but it’s time to off-load my BMX Bandits DVD. I’m not going to sell it or take it to a charity shop; instead I’m taking it along with another five items to the Cadge-IT event at the Brewery Tap on June 1 (6pm) which is part of the city’s Green Festival events, supported by ESP. Here you’ll be able to swap stuff still in good nick and in working order like mobile phones, Playstations, Xboxs, cameras, speakers, iPods, video games, computer mice, power tools, torches, kids’ toys, MP3 players, books and magazines. It’s all to encourage us to think more about the environment and swap stuff you no longer want or need rather than throw it away. Everyone must bring at least one item (maximum six) and you can take home up to the same amount of items that you bring. Here’s what I’m swapping. BAR FOUND ITS MOJO AGAIN It was sitting empty for far too long but finally the space beneath the City Club on Priestgate formerly known as Xoo Bar has been given a new lease of life and trendy name. Mojo Bar and Lounge is how we are to refer to the old City Club from now on. Regulars at Xoo will remember a poky bar with a low ceiling and barely enough room to swing a girl across the dance area. But subtle improvements have thankfully been made. Firstly the décor is more contemporary. Decent black leather sofas and stylish lampshades that decorate small tables to put your drink on are nice touches. Other notable tweaks include more seating and a music policy that will hopefully guarantee we won’t be hearing Girls Aloud or any other manufactured band from a reality TV obsessed society. I spent a couple of hours at Mojo where tracks were played from a variety of music genres including Motown, soul, disco and modern classics from the 90s to the present day. You’re encouraged to make requests too. The biggest change to this venue is the introduction of an internal spiral staircase, left of the old entrance, which feeds revellers to and from the upstairs bar. Not only does the staircase give you a proper feeling of ‘entering’ a venue (an element missing from other city bars and clubs), it also provides a much-needed source of air flow in what used to be a venue you’d develop sweat circles under your armpits in. Co-owner Steve Jason is targeting the over 25s market. Certainly that end of town is more geared up for the over 30s and there’s a ‘second circuit’ for this crowd to enjoy, which I can print next month (Steve, email me it please). Either way it’s good to see Steve continuing to beat the drum in trying to revive the city’s struggling night-time economy and remind people just how many places there are to have a good night out in Peterborough whatever your age or taste in music. Mojo is a venue where people can sit and talk but at the same time on weekend nights it’s a place to chill after a meal at one of the many nearby restaurants instead of going home to watch Match Of The Day. Record it. It’s open every lunchtime 11am to 3pm and Thursday to Saturday nights from 5pm until late.

I'm really looking forward to the finals night this year; it’s a fantastic social event and a real confidence builder. “It was a complete shock to win. I entered thinking ‘what’s the worst that can happen?’ and now here I am working with the ESP team doing so many things I never dreamed of
doing. It's such a fantastic opportunity, very rewarding and a real life changer. Fact Of The Month In 2006 scenes from the film The Da Vinci Code were filmed at Burghley House in Stamford. Burghley played numerous different locations in the film, including all the interior and many of the exterior scenes portraying Castile Gandolfo. The film crew were on site for five weeks and scaffolding was erected along the whole south elevation of the house. A bedroom was created, perched twenty feet up on a scaffold platform above the Kennel Yard. The park was also used for the main unit base in the area with over thirty trailers and three hundred crew!

He’s been the manager a Stamford's Quay Hole Kates nightclub now for 20 years and I caught up with him for a little natter about the town (and stag weekends!) I went for the king prawn dishes which are always my favourite: king prawn in sweet and sour sauce and the chef’s special spicy king prawns. Big up the girls this month – loads of local lasses will be taking part in the Race For Life which takes place on May 16 at Burghley Park. Around 3,500 ladies will be doing the 5k run to raise money for Cancer Research UK and attempting to break the fundraising target of £207,672.

Since 1994, women of all ages and fitness levels across the UK have come together at these inspiring events to walk, jog or run 5k to help beat cancer. But all of them share a common goal: to raise money for Cancer Research UK’s groundbreaking work to beat cancer. Once again my sister, mum, aunty and cousin will be running again as well as former Face of ESP, gorgeous Claire Smith. I’ll be down there on the day with my camera to snap a few shots and cheer them on.

Food Glorious Food! Because I’m off to the sunny climes of Egypt in a couple of months, I stupidly signed up for a juice diet for a week in an attempt to lose all the weight that I’ve been storing (for the last thousand years!) and get the body that I’ve been dreaming about, (equally, for the last thousand years). Why I thought that a diet would be the answer to all my problems or that I wouldn’t consume more calories the week before or the week that followed was beyond me. So day one went perfectly well without a hitch – unless two slices of ham and a hot chocolate are classed as a hitch. I was feeling hopeful… until on giving my boyfriend a progress report he replied – “OMG, you’ve failed on day one!” Promptly exclaiming that it was my time of the month (don’t you boys understand anything?) and that I’d only had about 300 calories (cough, cough) that day, I ended the conversation pointing out that he wasn’t making me feel any better. Poor chap. My excuse? Hunger. Anyway, where was I? Oh yes, Hell. Depite the fact that day one had finished with one or two small hitches, I wasn’t feeling too bad (apart from the migraines, hunger pangs and self pity), but there was margin for improvement! I didn’t have nightmares that night (you know the ones when you dream that you sucked all the life out of your nearest and dearest by squishing them with your bussized backside) – instead I dreamed about food and plenty of the stuff that I shouldn’t be eating. Waking up from my delicious dream, I was in quite good spirits and then the first juice arrived. Whhhhhhhy did my sister absorb all of the skinny gene from my mum? And whhhhhhhyyy is it that these skinny models are littered all over, like, everywhere, as a constant reminder that you shouldn’t eat? And whhhhhhyyy on day two is that all I keep

thinking about is fried food…? Give me a slab of chocolate cake – FRIED! As you know if you’ve dieted before, I was feeling pretty miserable but also somewhat creative – “If I could just chop this bit off and that bit, without leaving a scar, costing the world and it’s dog and with minimal pain, it would solve a multitude of problems.” My friend that evening was a handful (Goliath’s handful) of salted cashews and my other, conscience, which I let back in after the cashews had gone. Why is it that we have to put ourselves through these ordeals to feel good about ourselves? I thought. I know that the grass isn’t greener but it doesn’t help me stop wanting a tighter pair of buttcheeks! As the week passed me by, I was very glad that this ordeal would soon be over but then it dawned on me, I was a week closer to my holiday. Damn. Earlier this month I’d taken some friendly advice from someone slimmer than me who said - “why don’t you buy yourself some stuff in the dress size you want to be so it motivates you to fit into it?” Now, this sounded like great advice (this will work, I won’t have any choice but to slim down or else – 1. I’ll look like a whale on the beach – people might attempt to push me into the water, 2. I’ll waste my money, she’s skinny so this is probably what she did to shed the pounds. Never did the thought cross my mind that she was born skinny… nahh.) On day three when I realised day seven may never come for me, I did the wisest thing I’d done all week – returned my thinspiration items to the shop – who wants to wear a monokini anyway? Not me. I will instead head to the beach fully clothed… or maybe just not go? Oh Lord, was I such a bad girl? So, soooooo hungry!
Figuring that after a week of 35 juices, two chocolate bars, four bags of crisps, chips, a sausage and popcorn, not forgetting the two slices of ham, it didn’t really constitute a diet. I grabbed a bag of Malteasers, crisps and a Chicago Town pizza and

triumphantly placed them on a plate (not the Malteasers, my evil twin ate them in two seconds flat). I am going on this holiday, diet or not and if the other beach goers don’t like it then they can lump it, or talk about me in Arabic, either way the juice has left me past caring!

Eating healthily is no picnic… but it should be! Trying to keep to a healthy diet can sometimes be difficult when you’re on the move unless of course you’re happy with the meal deals of sandwich, packet of crisps and a drink or a salad mostly packed with pasta and mayo! Starving recently and missing my train out of Kings Cross station I was at least compensated as I found a place selling take-away soup. The young guy serving me looked anxious as he apologised and explained it would take him two minutes to heat it up, was that OK and did I want to wait? Is life really that fast we can’t wait two minutes for food? Research shows that a meal prepared in the Cephalic phase digestive response – which roughly translated means that a meal prepared with care and eaten in a more relaxed atmosphere with all your senses being stimulated such as smell, sight, taste etc – all starts the digestive process as we’re anticipating the food! So a meal eaten in a relaxed, happier environment may also help to increase your digestive capacity.

COMEDY GOES GREEN… A COMEDY KISS WITH A CLUNKING FIST Back in 2006 before he handed over to Gordon Brown, Tony Blair famously said that the next election contest would be – "A flyweight versus a heavyweight." Addressing David Cameron across the despatch box in the House of Commons he said... "However much he dances around the ring beforehand he will come in reach of a big clunking fist and, you know what, he'll be out on his feet, carried out of the ring." Now I'm not condoning violence – but let's face it the only memorable thing about the 2001 election campaign was when John Prescott punched a Welsh farmer who'd thrown an egg at him. It was hilarious. So during Gordon Brown's big TV interview with Piers Morgan I hoped we'd finally see that big clunking fist of his. It was the perfect opportunity, especially when Morgan started prying into his private life. But instead all we got was another interview where he looked uncomfortable and ending sentences with that gawpy jaw thing he does. What I would've liked to have seen was Brown telling Piers that he was a big fan of Rod Hull and Emu – then take an Emu puppet out of his briefcase, put it on his arm and in homage to the famous Rod Hull interview on Parkinson use it to repeatedly punch Piers Morgan in the face – a comedy kiss with a clunking fist! Just think how many times the clips would've been shown on the news and the internet. It'd be like Susan Boyle x a billion. But it's not too late, there's still time for him to clunk Jeremy Paxman or Andrew Marr. If Labour do lose the election Brown might as well go down fighting. Let's see him conduct every interview with Emu on his arm, snarling it up every time someone asks him an awkward question. Go on Gordo, you know you want to. www.es p m ag .co.u k ( May )
Attention fans of Ricky Gervais. Ricky's support act of choice, Robin Ince will be headlining the Peterborough Green Festival Comedy Night on Friday June 4 at The Key Theatre. For those of you unfamiliar with Robin, take a look at Ricky's live DVD Politics, as you'll see Robin suffering all manner of annoyances courtesy of Monsieur Gervais on the extras. The commentary the pair provide over the top of the actual stand-up show is one of the funniest DVD extras in the comedy stratosphere. Watch it, enjoy it, and then come and see Robin tackling green and eco issues on June 4. He'll be like some kind of green-eco-monkey balancing on the last iceberg out of the North Pole. It promises to be a great night as not only is Incey coming to town with his liberal brand of counter-culture comedy, but Canadian maple-leaf licker Tony Law will be surrealing things up early in the evening. He went down a storm last year when he opened for Stewart Lee at The Key and earlier this year at Radius so it'll be a welcome return. What green issues will he find to chomp on? Who knows? Why not go along and find out? The evening will also feature up-and-coming stand-up Richard Brophy and will be compered by regular Radius comedy night MC Adam Tempest who'll be whipping up a storm of one-liners and steering the good ship comedy through any choppy waters (ie. if anyone heckles). In the meantime I'll leave you with my 'green' credentials, namely a picture of me wearing my 'green' jacket with Robin 'I'm going to fold my arms' Ince. Please note: the photo is 100% recycled as it was first used in 2008 when Robin performed in Stamford. DOREEN'S MOVING STORY A collection of lost Morecambe & Wise recordings has recently been rediscovered and will form part of a Radio 4 series presented by Jon Culshaw starting on May 4 called Morecambe and Wise: The Garage Tapes. Doreen Wise, widow of Ernie, unearthed the previously unheard recordings in her garage when she moved home last year. The acetate discs and reel-to-reel tapes dated back to the 1950s and would’ve originally been kept at the couple’s house in Peterborough where they lived in the early 50s to the mid 70s. (Doreen was originally from the city and the pair were married at Park Road Baptist Church in the city in 1953.) Around 45 hours of recordings were found including – You're Only Young Once, Eric & Ern's first BBC show – a 1954 radio series which has never been heard since. Meanwhile Doreen was recently involved in unveiling a stone statue of her late husband Ernie in Morley, West Yorkshire where he was originally from and joked she'd been looking forward to the unveiling – "because that's the only time Ernie will be over six feet tall!" Right, now if you'll excuse me I'm off to take a metal detector around Ernie Wise's old house in Peterborough to see if he buried any money in his back garden. If I'm not back here next month, you'll know I've hit the jackpot…

THE ESP PAPARAZZI CREW HIT SPENCER’S CHARITY BALL AND THE STANGROUND SCHOOL REUNION… Now with Mr Paparazzi himself in attendance there was no way Pep Cipriano was going to his school reunion without his camera! The class of 1990 got together again at Stanground School and had a fantastic night. Determined Angeline Lenaghan (Parker as she was at school) was the driving force behind bringing Pep and his school mates back together and more than 100 were reunited again after 20 years. Pep said – “It was a great night at our old school, made even better with the presence of two former teachers and the fact that I was on the winning quiz team! Sophie Ellis-Bextor has certainly had a busy ten years. If having a string of international hits, including Groovejet, Take Me Home and Heartbreak (Make Me A Dancer) wasn’t enough, Sophie supported Take That on their Beautiful World Tour, renewed her Rimmel contract and became a mother to two beautiful children. After recording, writing and touring for the last couple of years, Sophie is back with her new single Bittersweet and is set for chart success once again. You may have followed Sophie from the days when she burst into the charts and into our lives alike, after a famous battle for the number 1 slot with Posh Spice and Dane Bowers (she won in case you’ve forgotten), or maybe with her later material. Either way, you’ve got to love her, just like we do at ESP. If, like me you were uncertain of what Sophie’s been up to for the last few years – let this be an education! Not only has Sophie been working on “shiny and new” songs and all of the above (pay attention please), efforts are spent cooking in the kitchen and sometimes spectating as she confesses – “Rich (her husband) is a better cook than me.”

Refreshingly Sophie doesn’t focus her energies into being ‘papped’ falling out of nightclubs or being seen in all the ‘right’ circles – instead Sophie makes great music and modestly speaks of her job as – “playing music with your friends.” Unsurprisingly, one of Sophie’s favourite artists, when growing up was Madonna, another lady who effortlessly stands out from the crowd, so I wanted to hear, in her own words, what we should expect from Bittersweet. “I think it’s quite a good introduction to the album. It’s quite positive, upbeat, dancey, electro, which is indicative to the sort of sound I’ve been making with this one [album].” The new material has had some of the best in the business working on it – Cathy Dennis, Calvin Harris and Freemasons (“great folk”) to name a few and future ideas for collaborations she suggests would include – “Daft Punk… maybe someone quite different to me like The Killers or Kings of Leon.” The songs on the new album are “all pretty much favourites,” but one favourite, Revolution; “I’m particularly pleased with,” she tells me, “because it’s quite chaotic and urgent and I like songs like that.” Sophie’s easy to talk to, lighthearted and has an engaging nature which made me wonder how she managed juggling motherhood in the mix (and looking great for it by the way). “It’s quite chaotic, hectic, but you kind of take each week as it comes and, you know, the kids are quite used to it really. They don’t know any different and neither do I so we shape our week around what’s going on I guess and some weeks it means I’m away quite a lot but other weeks I’ll be there the whole time so I take it as it comes.”

And when it comes to relaxing? “I play with the kids, take them to the park and that sort of stuff and I think a big pleasure is eating so whether it be getting people round for a meal, or going out for dinner with my husband, or cooking I find quite therapeutic. Along with other stuff it’s the source of a lot of pleasure for me.” The conversation leads nicely on to food and after talk of roast lamb, roasted sea bass and the like reached the stage of proceedings where I’m cap in hand waiting for my dinner invitation as dinner sounds very good indeed!

Off the subject of food (mmmm roasted seabass) and back on to work… “This year is mainly about the album,” Sophie tells me. “I’ve got another single coming out in July (called Off And On) and the album will come out in August, so I’ll just be following it where it takes me.” Unlike your typical nine to fiver, who’d probably be able to predict where they see themselves in 10 years, Sophie didn’t project further than her autumn tour, which will hopefully bring her back to Peterborough as it’s been a fair few years since ‘The Bextor’ performed here last. Now, you may harbour secret, or not so secret, plans to enter the world of celebrity – if so Sophie has this great advice for wannabes. “Don’t fixate on getting a record deal because sometimes that bit when you’re in development, trying out new ideas and enjoying just being your own person is the bit where you can really work out who you wanna be and how you wanna take it forward. Getting a record deal is not the Holy Grail – when you’re ready it will happen, so just enjoy developing.” If Sophie could choose another career it would be as a writer, perhaps a journalist so I did kindly offered to trade places… “OK I’ll see what (management) says, maybe you can have a couple of weeks…” I don’t want to seem greedy so I reduce the offered job swap to a measly day, which I’d be absolutely happy with and whilst there’s a little bit of laughter… no cigar! What Sophie didn’t realise was I was being deadly serious! We say our goodbyes and I’m left thinking not only is Sophie the epitome of über cool, she’s also a doting mother, a great cook and really quite nice. This month ESP is going green big style and backing Peterborough’s Green Festival. There’s something for everyone so there’s no excuse not to do your bit. “It’s been my life’s work just to try and stop people being intimidated and to lead them to believe they can do it – 90% of it’s common sense,” says Alan. “Do it bit by bit, expand your knowledge and don’t take on too much too soon, just gradually build on what you’re doing and get better at it and then you won’t be intimidated and phased by it. Little and often! He’s just added to his series of easy gardening guides – How To Garden (£6.99) – and they do make it look easy if you fancy having a crack at it. Afterall it’s an easy way of doing your bit for the environment, no matter how small your patch! “I think gardeners are often overlooked because they’re the only truly interactive naturalists,” adds Alan, “they take cuttings, they plant seeds, they grow things they don’t just watch them. Whether it’s a little bunch of flowers in a vase or growing a carrot or a lettuce it’s hugely fulfilling and it’s positive. Instead of saying don’t drive to work unless you have to, don’t do this – all those don’t, don’t, don’ts – gardening is a ‘do’, it’s a positive and it shows how even on a small scale you can make a difference. “We can all go organic, we can all stop spraying as much as we do and stop being so control freaky – realising that a garden that’s home to wildlife is a home to all kinds of wildlife not just the bits we like. Collecting rainwater from roofs makes sense, having a compost heap in the corner – it all takes a bit of doing but you feel wonderfully virtuous when you do it.” The new Van Hage centre near Eye has been built with sustainability at its heart which Alan gave the thumbs up and added – “What’s also a huge plus is the enormous range and the plant quality is very high. That’s the nucleus and bedrock on which this is built and all the other areas are an add on so the other half of the family who doesn’t necessarily like gardening will have plenty to do as well so it must be a plus!”

Not only does this take-away provide you with some yummy fish and chips, Fillets also offers a large variety of other fast food delights. There’s no doubt that everyone’s first impressions when stepping into the shop is how clean and attractive it is, with its contemporary lighting and design resembling a fancy bar, this is definitely not your average chippy! We made a quick visit to Fillets in Hampton to admire the place and indulge in some tasty food, and we were not disappointed! There was so much to choose from that it was a task in itself trying to decide what to have, whilst the smell of the food was building up quite an appetite. It’s always a hard decision when it comes to choosing between a gorgeous fresh salad or mouth watering fish and chips and both are on the menu here. If you’re not even in the mood for fish, but fancy something different, their menu ranges from spring rolls and pineapple fritters to a delicious donner or chicken kebab. Or if you just want something small and not too calorific then you can always have a jacket potato with your desired topping. After some deliberation and taking orders from our hungry colleagues back at the office, we finally went away with a large bag of food. The chicken kebab went down well, wrapped in a pitta with a large side of mixed salad and mayo. The chicken was delicious and tender, with no arguments on the size of the portion! Several of us opted for a jacket potato whilst a few enjoyed the freshly cooked chicken burgers, sausages and large portion of chips. There we no complaints and some very fulfilled staff here at the ESP office for the rest of the afternoon! Fillets is open every day of the week from 11.30am so there’s no excuse not to go. Even the kids can enjoy a value meal for just £2.80, which can be a choice of sausage, fishcake and nuggets with chips along with a toy and a drink. It was certainly a good choice as we cleared the plate leaving just the dips behind. We then thoroughly enjoyed our burgers, wraps and flatbreads – a great choice for a lunchtime snack! Tel: 0871 9429186 You might not immediately consider a hotel for your traditional Sunday lunch, but with the Holiday Inn at Thorpe Wood now offering roasts for the first time and having just gained its four star AA rating we thought we’d give it a try. The hotel’s recently had a freshen up and been rebranded so it’s looking good, and the restaurant’s certainly bright and airy on a sunny weekend and has a live pianist adding some easy listening during your meal. Tasty smoked haddock fishcakes (£4.25) and melon with champagne sorbet and strawberry coulis (£3.95) got us all off to a great start and the service was prompt without you feeling rushed or hassled, just nice and easy – the way it should feel on a Sunday! Then it was time to tuck into the main event – succulent roast rib of beef (£10.95) with homemade Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes and plenty of veggies for a couple of us and roast farm chicken with bacon and sausage trimmings for the rest. The portions were certainly generous enough but some of us just couldn’t resist trying the desserts so we were soon polishing off a pile of profiteroles dripping in chocolate sauce and a gorgeous fruity meringue.

If you like the idea of a Sunday lunch but aren’t a fan of roasts there’s plenty of choice on the menu including cous cous stuffed red peppers with ratatouille (£7.95) and deep fried plaice fillet (£8.95) the day we went along. EXCELLENT ITALIAN FOOD BESIDE THE RIVA there’s no right or wrong way. For me it’s the classic Italian starter – the symbol of Italy (along with the humble watermelon, Vespa / Lambretta and Sophia Loren) staring at you from the plate in the Italian colours: green, white and red. Green is basil of which there was just the right amount not to overpower the white of the mozzarella and the red, chopped chunks of tomato. This colourful combination sits on three slices of toasted Italian bread. Heaven.
The word ‘Riva’ means different things for different generations of Italians. Some of us will remember it as being the surname of a freescoring Italian footballer of the 1970s, while the rest of us will testify Riva as being that very good Italian restaurant housed in The Key Theatre building.
When I’m rating and recommending dining experiences I mainly consider consistency (in the food), service and atmosphere. Riva scores high in all three categories and on this occasion (my first of two visits in seven days) was no different. For my starter I went old school and chose Bruschetta Caprese. This pre-main is a little like a Mini – it doesn’t matter where you go, you’ll never see two the same. Every Italian restaurant has their own take on how to present this dish,
Groans of pleasure were coming from my dining partner, she began a love affair with her Pollo Romana. A swoop of her fork and I could see why she was smitten. Strips of succellent chicken breast in cream, mushroom and brandy sauce. This was quite simply delicious. The portions at Riva have always been just right, not too much and not skimpy. This particular serving had to be adequately measured – it was too rich to overload and too tasty to hold back on. Last, but by no means least, was dessert. I would have liked to have seen more Italian options to choose from but the usual suspects were still on offer (cheesecake etc.) combined with old motherland favourites like tiramisu, sorbet (different flavours available) and gelato.

I went for Torta Della Nonna (lemon cake) with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream while my sweettoothed partner tucked into insideout profiteroles. The Torta was very sweet and addictive and the insideout profiteroles took some getting used to, which is why I demolished two of the three generous-sized ones served before her. It’s morning as I’m typing this, I’ve just had my Coco Pops. But my mind is already drifting to thoughts of lunch… think I know where I’m going… Riva has that effect on you. My (fit) dining partner opted for Melon e Prosciutto. This was presented with two colours of melon and an ample serving of fresh Parma ham. Again, my mouth is still watering.

Booking your hols? Mikey Clarke reveals what really goes on behind the scenes… them to get to know each other. This would’ve been fine if it wasn’t for the fact that the ‘team bonding’ event was clubbing privately in a top Ibiza nightclub with a free bar! After 4pm, it was quite clear to the holidaymakers that a ‘staff training day’ wasn’t the true story… In one hotel a professional show was taking place where a friend of mine named Andy had the simple task of pressing play on a CD player. As he leant across he fell over and knocked his head quite badly. Meanwhile, a Take That tribute band was standing awkwardly on stage with no music and the focus firmly on Andy lying on the floor!
Have you ever watched the making of a film? If you have, you’ll never look at that film in the same way again. This is the best way to describe what it’s like going on holiday after you’ve been a holiday rep. Being a former rep myself, I can see through the hardworking image they portray. Don’t get me wrong, during working hours most reps are professional but when the uniform is off, it’s often a completely different story. In my three years of working abroad, the most common question I’d be asked is - “what happens behind the scenes?” As it’s now that time of year when we all start to plan our summer vacation, I thought I’d fill you in on a few things your representatives could be getting up to instead of being tucked up nicely in bed. Firstly I should confess what really happened when the company I worked for in Ibiza announced to all their hotels on the island – “There’ll be no representative present today between the hours of 10am and 4pm”. All the holiday company staff were supposedly on staff training. In reality this was a rare team bonding day for all of www.es p m ag .co.u k ( May )
Around the same time, at a different hotel, and also under the influence of a considerable amount of booze, one family entertainer blurted out the ‘F’ word over the microphone during a quiz. There’s nothing quite like a hundred children asking their parents “what does that word mean?” to spoil a family night out… Luckily, I was able to hide my shame of bloodshot eyes and terrible breath on this particular night, dressed up as a giant fish whilst greeting new arrivals. Being a rep definitely isn’t glamorous! Although there are lots of laughs and larking about one guy did go too far and this particular rep found himself on the plane home. When a holiday maker decided to buy a video of his stay showing beach volleyball and silly drinking games, the guy putting it together thought it would be funny to give the guest footage of something else! Picture the scene... an eighteen year-old gets the family together to show them what a great time he had on hols. He switches on the DVD player, presses play and suddenly the screen displays what can only be described as err… hardcore blue material. I don’t think his nan would have approved...
Top 5 Tips To Make The Most Of Your Hols 5) Unfortunately some reps would rather persuade you to go on an excursion that gets them more commission. For a completely honest opinion on trips that are best for you, ask the locals. 4) Never underestimate the power of water and suntan lotion. Dehydration or a nasty burn can leave you feeling very ill and could certainly ruin the rest of your trip. 3) Stay in groups. Unfortunately trouble can be found anywhere. In most cases of incidents leaving people in distress the victim would be alone. 2) Talk to your rep. After living there they can often recommend better beaches, or nicer places to eat. 1) Happy kids result in a happy holiday. Always be prepared for delays on trips or in restaurants. Having a couple of magazines or crayons in your bag for your children could save you a lot of unnecessary stress.
Top 5 Tips To Becoming A Holiday Rep 5) Be specific! You can apply for different roles such as entertainer, customer service, etc. If you say you’re happy to do anything, you will not get the job as it just looks like your applying for a free holiday. 4) Be yourself. I’ve seen people applying to be an entertainer and literally dance into the interview room. Don’t be stereotypical of the role you’re applying for. 3) It’s never too late to apply. Don’t think that just because the summer season’s started that it’s too late to be hired. When people decide to leave the company, a replacement’s often needed at short notice. Also, summer’s the perfect time to apply for a winter season job. 2) Give it a chance. If you’re employed as a rep the first six weeks are always the hardest. After all, you’re in a new home, a new job, a new country, etc. These are all stressful but it does get much easier with time. 1) Take a piece of home with you. To avoid home sickness take along photographs, your CDs, or even your favourite duvet cover.

SCOOTERS RIDE OUT There was a cracking turn out for this year’s charity egg run with hundreds of scooter fans joining the Peterborough Lambretta and Scooter Club annual ride out. The generous scooter fans who regularly meet at The Cherry Tree on Oundle Road took to the city’s roads and headed to the Manor Respite Home and Sue Ryder’s Thorpe Hall Hospice to hand out dozens of Easter eggs. It was a fantastic day and later on the scooter fans gathered at The Fleet in Fletton to party with live music from local band The Replicas who went down a storm. READY AND WILLING We’ve barely sat down to chat when the alarm sounds and the volunteer firefighters race for their uniforms and are soon disappearing down the road in their fire engine with the sirens blaring. At least they were at the station – frequently they’ll be out for a meal with the family or fast asleep in bed when they get the call.
When you consider they’re doing all this for free you realise it takes some serious dedication. It’s not surprising then that Peterborough Volunteer Fire Brigade is the last volunteer service in the country – but what is surprising is that it’s survived 126 years! After all, there aren’t many people who’ll do something for nothing these days – let alone risk their lives. The PVFB do everything the full time brigade do, they have the same training and face the same risks. When we finally catch up with chief officer Tony De Matteis back at the station he confidently tells us that all of his team are genuinely in it for the love of the job – “If you asked each member if they’d carry on if they were to get paid I think every one of them would say no.” Tony’s actual paid job for the last 12 years has been as a prison governor at HMP Littlehey, but for 26 years he’s been dropping everything when his pager

beeps to fulfil this voluntary role.
“For me it’s always been an opportunity to do something I enjoy and to meet people but also to put something back into Peterborough where I’ve been born and bred,” he explains. “I like to keep busy, to get involved and to help people. “When my pager goes off I still get the same feeling I got when I first started.” The seventeen strong team at PVFB currently includes a builder, an industrial cleaner, an RAF firefighter, a printer, employees from Hotpoint and John Lewis and they’re current female member is a project manager. A lot of people who must have very understanding partners! “It does take a lot of hours and it doesn’t get any easier,” Tony tells us. “Your partner definitely has to be on your side otherwise it’s unfair on both sides. Once you get that pager your life changes.” Indeed it does. The PVFB are called out twice during our interview and don’t even manage a slurp of their tea. If the full time brigade goes out they’re next in line. The volunteers attend an average of 300-400 calls every year, with 987 being the most ever. If there’s a large scale incident anywhere locally you can guarantee the Peterborough Volunteer Fire
Brigade crews will get called out. They’ve played their part in key incidents such as the RAF Brampton blaze, the fire at Peterborough Cathedral and the huge fire near McCains in Whittlesey in 2008. They face the risks and the horrors of the job the same as Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue and share mutual respect with their full time colleagues. “You get used to dealing with horrible things – we all look after each other and make sure everyone’s OK,” explains Tony. “The worst thing is seeing children who’ve lost their lives in car accidents and fires – that never leaves you. “Without Cambridgeshire Fire and rescue service we couldn’t operate and we’re hugely thankful for their support.” This amazing service in Peterborough survives due to the determination of the people involved and there’s a waiting list to join. It’s certainly something to be proud of and there must be hundreds of people who owe these incredible people a huge debt. Before we get chance to thank them though the alarm sounds and they’re rushing off once again. Like Tony says as he darts off – “You’ve really got to be committed to join.”
HELP FOR HEROES CHARITY BALL We’ve heard some brilliant news that the Help For Heroes charity ball held at the Holiday Inn went really well. Within the first half hour they managed to raise a steaming £150 from the sale of the charity wristbands alone. The sit down meal was followed by an auction with fantastic prizes which included a weekend away, Posh tickets and much more. Throughout the night they had live band In Touch performing, along with dancing, a raffle and some good old fun and games to raise money.

They might have been used to pounding the beat but this team of cops from Cambridgeshire are planning to walk the 300mile length of The Pennine Way for a good cause.
RAF Wittering’s official ‘sweetheart’ and lingerie model Susie Hutson went along to the ball to show her support and told ESP – “I had such a fabulous night at the ball, I want to thank everyone who attended and helped raise so much for our amazing armed forces who are sadly wounded in action.” Susie estimates nearly £3,000 was raised, which is great news!
The officers will take on the challenge between June 21 and 26 and have started raising sponsorship in aid of Help for Heroes, which provides rehabilitation and treatment for members of the armed forces wounded in the conflict in Afghanistan. This will be no leisurely countryside ramble, the guys will sleep in tents at five sites along the route and walk for up to 14 hours a day, starting at 4am and covering 40 to 50 miles. The trek will start at Edale, in Derbyshire and finish at Yetholme, in Scotland – just a little further afield than their usual patch! Our intrepid heroes are Inspector Paul Rogers and PC Christopher Payne, both based at Thorpe Wood Police Station in Peterborough, Superintendent Nick Knight, based at force HQ, Sergeant Spencer Evans, from Safer Communities based at HQ and businessman David Wightman. Most of the team are exforces and Superintendent Nick Night says that’s partly why it’s a cause close to their hearts. “After watching the BBC programme Wounded it put the health that we take for granted into context. The admiration I have for those involved in the programme and the many hundreds of other colleagues that have also been injured and need our help drives and motivates me further. “For five and-a-half days of sore feet, long hours and fatigue it’ll be worth it knowing we’ve done our bit as some of the forces personnel we’re supporting may never get the opportunity to undertake such a task themselves ever again.” Inspector Paul Rogers added – "This challenge will take a lot of physical and mental stamina and we’ll have to do many miles of running, walking, cycling and rowing to condition ourselves. "Between now and June we aim to raise as much money as possible for the Help for Heroes charity which helps those who are suffering physically or mentally from the trauma of war." The team has support from the Army which will supply vital kit and supplies. They’re currently in training and will take part in a challenging training weekend together in the Peak District to limber up. Darksiders and Dante’s Inferno were just pretenders, but this nigh on perfect, graphically breathtaking spectacle is the daddy.
The stealth complexities of Double Agent have been replaced by a refined control system and storyline – which sees Fisher trailing his daughter’s killers – and offers a quicker action-based experience. With topnotch graphics and co-op throw in, this is one polished game that oozes class in every department.

This isn’t without its shortcomings – the storyline and acting is a little weak – but the exciting set-pieces make this a cool gaming experience.
Unfortunately if you’re not a fan the gruelling tutorial and sheer scale of the game can be a turn-off – but if you’re an enthusiast, this is king.
It’s sadly let down by extremely monotonous multiple training missions, but for the most part is better than the genre standard.

James Cameron’s Oscar-nominated pet project – that’s left every major movie turning to 3D – is the biggest movie of all-time. Sadly we can’t see it in all its 3D glory at home just yet – not even if you’re lucky enough to own a 3D TV – but it will be released on that format at a later date. Even in 2D though, it’s still a breathtaking
spectacle from the director of Aliens, as the immersive far away world of Pandora is brought to life with stunning razor-sharp visuals, and the amiable leads of Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana. The few storyline inadequacies leaves this short of Cameron’s best – and it loses a mark without the awe-inspiring 3D – but it deserves to be recognised for its special effects wizardry alone. ####

Finally we have shifted the dark nights and miserable cold mornings and spring has sprung. It’s been tough getting here this year don’t ya think? Well we are here and it means that the festival season is also here. Crazy nights and lazy days watching great bands in fields all around the country, meeting like-minded foolhardy souls who honestly believe that it’s warm enough to wear shorts, tankinis and flip flops… and that’s just the men!

Another festival that’s rapidly turning into a Peterborough excursion is Glastonbudget, yep I tell you every year and every year a few more listen and the number of Boro faces I see there grows.
How do you survive the summer? Well, the Editor suggested I was experienced enough to pass on my wisdom (I really can’t remember much of last summer, Sharon) so here are a few pointers… • Tickets. Internet is obviously the best option, Google your festival and book online, try and avoid ticket sites as they’re often over priced. However, if you register for their email newsletters you often get advance notice of ticket releases. E Festivals and Virtual Festival are good sites to browse for different festivals. • Prepare. Make sure your tent is in one piece from last time you used it, I’ve seen dozens of people shake out a big nylon canopy and find there are no poles with it… smart! Take some grub with you – it saves money and encourages you to eat as well as drink. Take stuff that you can whip up quick, sandwiches, soups etc. • Drinking. Do lots of it but stay safe, don’t wander around camp sites drunk and on your own ladies, stay with your drunk mates and wander around. • Hats. A festival must, not only to look a bit twattish and uncool but it will do two things – keep the sun off your bonce if it’s baking and keep the warmth in if it’s freezing, which is more likely. Oh and don’t forget your sunscreen.
So where to go this month – The Bearded Theory? Bearded Theory runs from May 14 - 16 near Derby and has a great line-up for the ticket price. New Model Army, Dreadzone, Banco De Gaia, Dodgy, Dr and The Medics and even the Cheeky Girls plus dozens more bands for £65… how cheap is that? It’s a chilled out affair is BT, as it’s affectionately known, well organised and the staff are great. You can also take part in a world record attempt on the Sunday to create the biggest group of people sporting fancy dress beards… you get the drift of the festival now I can tell. Yep it’s just silly for no other reason that it can be silly! Another part of the weekend that sounds a laugh is skiffle Saturday… Lonnnie – get yer chewin gum out... you’re on! Can’t wait, feelin’ cheeky already…The festival has loads of stuff going on other than bands: lots of entertainment for the kids, comedy performance art, busk stops and a real ale bar all set in a beautiful location, does it get any better? • Waterproofs. Take some… unless dry weather is guaranteed, take some… if there is a chance it could rain it will toss it down and sitting in a damp tent, soaked to the skin takes the edge off having just seen your favourite band. • Drinking 2. Take cans for the campsite. Glass bottles are frowned upon at a lot of festies and may be confiscated. Finally on drinking… if you are driving the next day take it steady the night before, getting pulled the next morning for drink driving would be a disaster for most... think about it. • Sucker. Don’t get drawn into paying extortionate prices. One festival not too far away from here is charging £153 for your ticket and £50 for a camper van. That’s £356 for a couple... no major headliner either – be careful out there!
The line-up this year is superb again – Foo Fighters, Killers, Oasis, Blondie, Duran Duran, Greenday, Kings of Leon, Madness, Queen, Dire Straits and The Stereophonics to name but a few. Yes, yes, yes they are all tribute bands but who cares, they are bloody good tribute bands! If you want new original music they got that too so you get a bit of the best of both worlds. It’s a great festival with about 5000 people – half of which are dressed as gorillas or Amy Winehouse or fairies. Come to think of it half the men are dressed as women… not quite, but you get the picture – it’s a carnival in a field. Like Bearded Theory it’s well organised and the staff are good fun, no thugs or brain dead thought police just chilled out volunteers. You can get your real ales and cider at pub prices and spend your spare cash on a variety of stalls, some selling fancy dress… it will suck you in believe me. Again for around £50 it’s great value and just about my favourite festival of the year, log on and do it www.glastonbudget.net. There are around 20 people I know who have tickets already... as Frank Gallagher would say “They all know how to have a paaarty,” and the party is on May 28-30 near Leicester.

"The guys tell me there’s another reason to venture out to The Cellar Bar on Thorpe Road as there’s a new BBQ ever Sunday with grub and Oakham Ales available between 12 noon and 1.30pm followed by a jazz and blues club at 2pm. MUSIC DAY FOR HEROES Local bands are supporting The Bridge For Heroes appeal in early May. The project based in Spalding is trying to raise funds to renovate The Bridge Hotel in Sutton Bridge to enable them to provide holidays for our serving troops and their families. It’s a really worthwhile cause which is being supported by The Plough in Farcet Fen. They’re hosting a live music day on Saturday May 1. It runs from 2pm until late and features amongst others: Shameless, Sterling, High Horizon and Black Stetson. It should be a great day with music to suit all from country & western and indie, to pop and rock. Admission’s just £5. There are also camping facilities if anyone wishes to pitch a tent. SEE MORE OF THE MORE I SEE It’s another busy month for Gizz Butt and the guys from The More I See as their album Tread The Darker Path has just gone on sale at HMV and they’re playing at the Hellfire Club @ Club Revolution, Peterborough on May 9. This three day event sponsored by Scuzz TV is spawned from the Hellfire Festival which was held last year at the Islington O2 Academy and in November at the Birmingham NEC. Then the guys have their first headline show in Peterborough this year on May 28 at Club Revolution with two London based thrash metal bands, Damnas and Flowers Of Flesh And Blood supporting with the event sponsored by Slaughterhouse Promotions who are very respected, happening and active on the London Metal scene. There will be two other hot Peterborough bands ALEERA and one more TBA.
Good luck to local band The Contrast on the release of their sixth album God Of Malfunction, just out on Wicked Cool Records. They’ve been hailed by some critics in America as – ‘having the potential to become the first great 21st century power-pop band’.

FENLAND RHYTHM & BLUES FESTIVAL The end of May sees the return of the popular Fenland Rhythm & Blues Festival. Bigger and better than previous years (spread over FOUR days from May 28 to 31) it’s taking place in the events field at The Plough on Ramsey Road at Farcet Fen. Organiser Dave Astell told us the aim of the Bank Holiday event is to – “provide great music, friendship, a chance to get away from the rat race for a few days, recharge the batteries, chill out, rip it up or just enjoy Mother Nature and the countryside.” ‘Sommat for everyone’ is the claim. He was later invited to join M People’s Mike Pickering at the decks of the infamous club Hacienda in Manchester in 1987 where he played for a decade. RATPACK RETURN Diamond Life presents Mix & Blend for a night of pure old skool classics, with veterans The Ratpack headlining alongside Rayan Gee, Kai, Julz and Jay Heal. DJ Lipmaster Mark and MC Evenson Allen aka The Ratpack have been instrumental in the development of dance music since the mid eighties. They were the first DJ and MC duo (which has now become a dance music institution in its own right) and were pioneers of the OldSkool concept and NuSkool breaks. Their 1992 classic Searchin' For My Rizla (Big Giant) topped the UK dance music charts and since then, they have even been on the books of industry big boys BMG, Sony and EMI. Ratpack have now set up their own entity Ratpack Music,
Rapper and MC Tinie Tempah made an appearance at Liquid nightclub recently to a crowd of excited fans. Best known for his current hit single Pass Out Tinie wowed his fans by performing some of his best known tunes on stage, including 2006’s Wifey Riddem with support from two other acts. Promotions organiser Carl told ESP - “It was a very busy night with a good turnout.” Tinie Tempah also did a meet and greet with his star struck fans, and our photographer Terry Harris was down there catching all the action. It’s always great to see stars like Tinie in the city, and we’re sure he won’t be the last!

Peterborough’s urban music scene is thriving at the moment, as many of the biggest stars in rap, R‘n’B and D‘n’B are starting to play at the city’s clubs. SKINS @ METRO Two of the Skins cast caused a stir at Club Metro recently at the I Love 2 Party night. Merveille who plays Thomas and Kathryn who plays Emily in the hugely successful E4 series hit the decks and entertained a 700 strong crowd at the under 18s night. Everyone went wild and one of the organisers, James Robertson told ESP it was big success – “Everybody said it was amazing and they had a good time. There’s barely a hair’s breadth between them going into May and even team boss Trevor Swales wouldn’t bet on the eventual outcome. Aussie Batchelor stunned his more experienced team-mates when he joined the club and immediately announced – “I’m after that no.1 race-jacket.” He’s already ruffled a few feathers within the camp with his brash personality but he’s already producing it where it matters on track. Batchelor couldn’t be more different to his Danish rivals and he’s no respecter of reputations having already clashed with fellow country and current Australian champion Chris Holder. He claims he’s the real Wizard of Aus after beating Holder five times out of six during the three-round title series during the winter. When he got the better of him during Peterborough’s live Sky match at Wimborne Road last month he didn’t waste any time in ramming home his views in front of the armchair fans. Swales admitted – “Troy a diplomat? You must be joking. He doesn’t mind who he upsets but he’s only got one goal in his career and that’s to be the best. So far he’s backed up his words with the points and I wouldn’t like to put a penny on the outcome of the race to finish the season as top Panther.” It’s a three-cornered fight that can only help Peterborough maintain their bright start to the new season that holds out real hope they can reach the play-offs and make it all the way through to the Grand Final title play-off.

It’s the month when our former Face of ESP Kerry Bates and Posh player Chris Whelpdale get hitched… It’s May, which can only mean one thing… the football season coming to an end! This does excite me a lot as it means Chris and I will be spending lots of lovely days together PLUS… our wedding is SOOOOO soon and our baby soon after that! Our big day approaches, but first a recap on the hen do… I’m quite upset that’s its over really as it was such a good night. I had friends there from every walk of life – school, university, football and even the in-laws! It was a great mix of people and we all literally laughed from start to finish. Not many of the girls knew each other before the day, however, once our naked butler turned up none of that seemed to matter and everyone was chatting and laughing like they’d known each other for years! The butler – Justin – was interesting to say the least! I like to think of myself as quite a brave individual and up for almost anything… however, when Justin arrived I turned bright red with embarrassment. When they call him a ‘butler in the buff’, they aren’t exaggerating. He was strolling around my house with his bits and pieces dangling around, yet he just seemed to think it was all very normal and continued to pour the champagne. Thanks to Susan, I did manage to get an eyeful of his manhood features too which I think almost sent me into labour! As the night began I was presented with ‘my outfit’ which I HAD to wear for the duration of the night. When I tell you it was horrendous I am not exaggerating… it truly was HORRENDOUS! It made me look like I was 14 times larger than I am already and was so brightly coloured I could’ve been a great accessory on Sesame Street! We then had dinner at a lovely Italian and later hit the dance floor in Mama Liz’s, where I put everyone else to shame with my dance moves, and then it was 15 girls back at mine www.es p m ag .co.u k ( May )

for a sleepover. I know my hen night wouldn’t appeal to everyone as I’m sure they’d like to go further afield, but I honestly loved every minute of it! With the wedding drawing closer, Chris and I have been going to marriage preparation courses (yes, really!) We were both a little dubious to begin with but after our first session we both said how good it is and how we think all couples should do it. Whether you’re planning to get married or not, you talk about topics which would never usually have cropped up and when you delve into them it’s actually very, very interesting! Luckily for us, this course has not broken us up… instead it’s made us stronger and we communicate in different ways a lot more! As I write Chris is recovering from yet another injury! He went over on one of his ankles and is still getting treatment to try and bring him back into the squad before the season ends. It would be great if he could get to play at least one game in front of the new manager before they come back for preseason. I think Chris is very pleased the new manager was able to start so soon. I think it’s good for the players to see the individual who’ll be working with them next season as they can get to know him a bit before they all head off for their holidays. There are lots of new things happening in our lives over the next couple of months so there’ll be many more stories I can tell I’m sure… until then though – enjoy the summer sun and next time you hear from me I’ll be Mrs Kerry Whelpdale! That sounds very strange…

Picture the scene; there you are, quietly enjoyi ng a coffee and a natter in The Bull hotel when sudde nly a not so tall, not so dark anymore and definitely not so handsome stranger walks in and sits at the table next you. Your eyes meet, you wonder why he looks familiar and then you realise that the not so handsome stranger is none other than I’m A Celebrity evictee and ex Mr Liza Minelli, David Gest, grabbing lunch in the centre of Peterborough. Sound too farfetched? Well that’s exactly what happened to our Editor Sharon recently when she met up with her friend whilst on a well earned week off. David was apparently lunching with a young man and would only reveal that he was in our fair city “visiting a friend”. Friends are clearly important to David; a quick look at his Facebook page shows he’s canvassing for ‘an extra 20’ fans to get his friends count over the 600 mark (currently at 584). Wow, a whole 600 worldwide? Gosh, to be that famous and that popular, no wonder he’s trying to recruit – even Kerry Katona has 820.
