A Tapestry of Sacred Music presents renowned British composer Sir John Tavener’s last major work. Spaced around the audience—with Indian instruments completing the ensemble—musicians set out to achieve Sir John’s intention of creating music that “whirls around the building”, in a uniquely immersive musical experience.
Based on 9th-century poet-philosopher Sankara’s poem Saundarya Lahari, this work praises the Hindu god Siva’s female consort Devi, who empowers creation, sustenance and guidance of the world. It is a work that is representative of Sir John’s perennial theme of the Divine Being.
