Taylor’s Beach Bar & Golf Simulators are both hosting live music, or if your keen for a feed with the local bar flies head to the Pier Hotel for some dinner and cocktails before the firework spectacular.

Another exciting event coming up is the 55th Flying Fifteen Australian National Championship held at Esperance Bay Yacht Club from 30th December to 5th January. The Cannery Arts Centre’s Cliffs Gallery are starting the year with an exhibition by Esperance based artist Tim Vaughan titled “Tumour Times: A Visual Novel”. 100 % of all cash donations and 50 % profit from sales of artworks will be donated to the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation. The official exhibition opening will be on Saturday the 7th of Jan at 11.30pm with a sausage sizzle, drinks and afternoon tea. An amazing cause to get involved in.

Red Dog True Blue [PG]

For some reason, I haven’t seen the first Red Dog film, so this was my first experience with this franchise. I wasn’t really sure how it would be, while I do love going in to see Australian films, sometimes they’re great and sometimes they’re not. Coming out of Red Dog True Blue, I had felt really happy, it’s a pretty good family film to watch and also has a solid plot as well. I’ve now made it my goal this week to see the first one.

Red Dog True Blue has a really great story and also has a lot of heart. It’s about this kid, Mick and his time in some town in the Outback where he finds a really great dog and also I guess we see him grow up a little as well. There are some complications along the way for the characters, which they all overcome and also a girl that moves to town, Betty that makes things interesting and also funny.

Overall I was quite impressed with Red Dog True Blue, it’s got a well balanced and lovely story about a kid and a dog in the outback.

Hanna Mangan Lawrence, Bryan Brown and Levi Miller did well with their roles and director Kriv Stenders is one that I’m happy to watch more from him in the future.

It’s a lovely family film that’s a good choice to take young kids to see!

BY KYRON SMITHSON New Years Eve finds the majority of local bands in action around town and the coming celebration is no exception. I will attempt to give a run down on who will be playing where.

Axess Denied will be kicking out some rocking tunes at The Gibson Soak Hotel; shuttle buses will be running throughout the night. Give the Soak a call for further details. Tipsy Jipsys will be firing up at the Golf Simulator from 9pm head down for a dance and some good vibes.

Lazy Boys will be performing at The Esperance Motor Hotel from 8.30pm until 1am for a rowdy way to bring in the new year. The Pier Hotel hosts Perth cover act Goodstock in the front bar followed by Djs in the nightclub until 3am.

Taylors Beach Bar and Café host a big lineup performing over two stages one dedicated to acoustic artists the other bands, drop past the venue for lineup details and to grab your ticket.

At my worst I write my best, seems to be a common theme among songwriters. You only have to consider artists such as Kurt Cobain or Amy Winehouse to recognize how personal torment can lend itself to exquisite creativity.

Music as a vehicle for the expression of emotion is unlimited in its scope. Personally I don’t like to imagine where I may be without my guitar, pen and notepad. With an increasing social awareness of mental illness over the past decade, comes a developing public awareness of how music and all art forms have a positive impact upon these issues. I feel as if people generally accept that a career as an artist is something that is attainable and important for the function of society as a whole. Where a high percentage of the population enter into employment spurred on by financial gain, artists are motivated by a love for the pursuit, and the effect it has upon their own and others mental well being.

Mandaboornap (Frenchman’s Peak) Dreaming Puppet Project presented by esperance Community arts partnering with escare

Puppet Artist Karen Hethey is returning 10 years after “Fantisea” to build large scale puppets with the Esperance Community to tell the Nyungar story about the boys who stole the eagles eggs from Mandaboornap (Frenchman’s Peak) and were turned into islands in the archipelago.

The story will be performed at the opening of the Festival of the Wind in March 2017.

Puppet workshops are open to everyone. They will take place at Nulsen Primary School from January 9th to 27th. Sessions will run daily from 10pm to 12pm, 1pm to 3pm and 4pm to 6.30pm. All children under 13 must be accompanied and supervised by older guardians.

We don’t know what will happen to us so why do we have the habit of making plans and setting expectations? These expectations can be dangerous, as we hold onto them when really it is out of our control. Events that happen in our lives can be as spontaneous as the weather. One minute there is predicted sunshine and the next we get a stream of rain. We go off what we are told, and what is predicted but in actual fact no one can tell us what is to come.

We make plans, we set dates and we expect that these fall into place. And when they don’t, it is like something is being taken from us. Something you never had to begin with, but because of these expectations we have gained some type of possession over these random events. It makes you question why we think we continue to plan.

Why we continue to expect things to happen or not to happen. Because life will happen as it wishes. Things will fade, and others will evolve. We don’t have a say in what cycle this takes. The only control we have is a choice in how we respond to what happens, and the decision we make to take our next step.

Scaevola’s grow naturally on coastal dunes and can withstand the harshest of condition and often can look a bit weathered in their natural environment, but who doesn’t after being exposed to constant salt spray, sand and wind not to mention being starved of food and water. They sometimes can be overlooked as a garden plant but give these plants the smallest amount of love and attention and they will reward you with a mass flowering in spring.

My favourite is the globulifera, which is perfect as a border plant and has a deep purple flower. Use the aemula in a pot that allows it to spills over the edges for a stunning affect. The crassifolia is best planted on mass and when it flowers your garden will look like the lavender fields in Provence, France.

Through a tourist’s eye

I love this time of year. Warm weather (generally speaking, warmer than Albany anyway!) and the holiday season. Some locals like to whinge about all the tourists in town flogging their parking spot outside the post office or taking up too much room at Wharton Beach with their big four wheel drives and sun shades. Not me though! I love seeing the diversity of people. I enjoy trying to work out where people are from as I hear them speak in a language foreign while I’m pushing the shopping trolley in the supermarket. I always make a point of having a swim at Twilight Beach at this time of year to observe some of the many visitors. This could sound weird but what I like is not recognising anyone that I know! Year in and year out the beach is full of visitors from all parts of the world. It makes me feel as if I’m the one on holidays, far away in a beautiful destination.

Which brings me to the point of this little pieceas a long-term local person if I always look at Esperance through the eyes of a tourist I can remind myself that I live in a truly beautiful place.

My mood can be that of the wide-eyed newcomer who experiences joy and wonder when seeing the beaches and colour of the water. Holidaymakers somehow give themselves permission to enjoy every meal and cup of coffee. They take time to appreciate looking in a shop or strolling on the beach. So thanks to all you visitors who every year remind me how much I appreciate living in this little piece of paradise.
