Esperance Theatre Guild presents Are You Being Served? at the Bijou Theatre from August 25th to September 9th. Based on the hit 70’s TV series, the play follows the antics of Mrs Slocombe, Mr Humphries, Captain Peacock and all the staff as they serve behind their counters in the Grace Brothers Dept Store in London.

Back in the seventies surfing was emerging into the mainstream sport but in conservative parts of Australia surfing was seen as a worthless pastime associated with laziness, drugs and anti social behaviour. At the beach, surfing was very popular but in mainstream society, it was frowned upon. Schools did not offer surfing as a sport but there still was a national schoolboys surf comp with winners going unrecognised by their individual schools as most teachers and parents shunning the sport. Surfing was not a nine to five thing and couldn’t be planned in advance. Like many things, youth found all this as being cool and as a result triggered the surfing boom like some sort of revolution. Of course, business began to milk it for profit and the image was incorporated. Today sees a retro boom as the contradiction of trying to be individual creates a new populist. Weird boards and embracing the old is fraught with image, with perhaps little development but hopefully, we will progress from the accidentals. Three fins and six feet of foam, go jump Rasta.

Breakfast Tart

Hot or cold, this egg, spinach, rocket, leek and feta tart does the job.

Ingredients • 80g butter, coarsely chopped • 1 leek, thinly sliced • 1 garlic clove, finely chopped • 1½ bunches spinach, trimmed and coarsely chopped • 1½ bunches rocket, coarsely chopped • 150g each ricotta and feta, coarsely crumbled • 2 tbsp each coarsely chopped thyme and oregano • Finely grated rind of a lemon

1. Preheat oven to 180C. Melt half the butter in a large frying pan over medium heat, add leek and garlic and stir occasionally until starting to caramelise. Add spinach and rocket, stir until wilted, transfer to a colander to drain, then a bowl. Add cheeses, herbs and lemon rind, season to taste, mix well, set aside.

2. For tomato relish, heat oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat, add onion and garlic and stir occasionally until starting to caramelise.

Add tomato, sauté until tomato begins to break down. Add vinegar and sugar, season to taste, cook until syrupy, then cool to room temperature.

3. Melt remaining butter and brush base and sides of a 20cm x 29cm loose-bottomed tart tin, then line with a filo sheet, allowing pastry to overhang. Brush with butter, then lay over another filo sheet and repeat until filo is used.

Spread spinach mixture in base, make 6 evenly spaced indentations in filling, set aside.

4. Whisk buttermilk and 3 eggs in a bowl to combine, season to taste, then pour onto spinach mixture. Crack remaining eggs into indentations and drizzle with oil. Brush pastry edges with butter and bake until tart is set and eggs are cooked medium (20-25 minutes). Serve with tomato relish.

In order to start this advert, I began my search for a community issue on the Esperance Community Page on Facebook. The first thing I noticed was the endless posts about lost or missing dogs. WITH Kyron Smithson So the weekend of Sweet Tuna has finally arrived. All involved have been working slowly but surely towards the date growing a little more excited each day. One bump in the road arose as Cal had to pull out at late notice, I was super excited to see the lad play and slightly disappointed. Though with these things change is inevitable and we are happy to announce Sam Stopworth lead singer of Perth band Boykie will be joining the lineup. I have to thank Ruby for her diligence in replacing Cal and it’s fantastic to see there are musicians out there with a thirst for a little adventure. I’ve been checking out some of Boykie’s tunes, and I must say I’m keen to hear Sam strip them back to their acoustic shell. Still Hiding is a tasty tasty track, and the title track to their recently released ep. Check it out on YouTube or dive headlong into the band’s full EP on Soundcloud. With Stopworth heading to Esperance, I’m thinking it may be quite a short space of time before we see the full Boykie lineup. Their sound leaves me yearning for summer, casual ales and casual vibes, oh man that would be grand. I’m also glad to announce that Rosie Pollard will be cooking up some delightful goods to infuse your evening, offering tantalizing burgers and a sensational vegan option (wild rice stuffed/ smoked pumpkins). Be Careful What You Wish For

Like Leon, who writes the “Surf Report”, my girlfriend and I also arrived in town 30 years ago. By Chance. Actually, by happenstance.

Leon’s article back in June – prefaced with lyrics from the 1987 World Party song “Ship of Fools” – got me thinking about the changes we’ve witnessed in our time here in Esperance, but more particularly about how the town might look in 30 years’ time. So did Tiff Brown’s article back in February which looked at how the town has changed in her time on the planet.

I’m no economist or demographer, but I guess that as long as people keep having kids, there will be growth and “demand”. This may necessitate accepting expansion.

I failed “Leaving Economics” – put it down to a personality clash – but I don’t believe “expansion” always equates with progress.

When do we say that if expansion comes with too much compromise, well that’s not a positive outcome. It’s not progress.

Would we want Esperance to be like everywhere else? Why wouldn’t we strive to maintain the positive things that set us apart?

Retain the things that make Esperance attractive. Because if we become like all those other towns, well, what would make judicious people see Esperance as a particularly desirable destination.

Maybe our point of difference is in attracting people with discerning attitudes. Perhaps people should visit expecting to find that things are going to be different – hey, maybe all the shops won’t be open on Sunday … or even Saturday afternoon.

Maybe they’ll have to shop accordingly like our parents did when they took us on holidays. Discriminating visitors will probably appreciate the difference. Maybe we should look to provide service as much as product.

And, in a similar vein, without giving away all the local secrets, let’s acknowledge the people who’ve made the effort to get here. The people who wanted to go somewhere different. The people who’ve gone down the track found the uncrowded wave.

Thinking back, that’s possibly how you found Esperance. Food for thought, but be careful what you wish for!

Lime

If your garden used to be under the sea then chances are you have soil made by the compression of shells and crustaceans, which is limestone and alkaline. Although this sounds very romantic, this is not ideal for a garden as no plant is really a lover of lime, but there are ways around it.

You can battle nature and try and replace the soil but this can prove expensive and not ideal for larger blocks of land. Another option is to administer iron chelates, which will unlock nutrients in plants in the presence of too much lime, but this too can be expensive and not long lasting. Selecting the right plant is the best solution to the problem.
