As I am finishing off this issue of the Tide, it’s past 7pm and it’s still 29 degrees outside. The hit of warm breeze in the evening is super satisfying after a huge/busy couple of weeks that is the new year season.

This weekend is looking great on the weather front, which is perfect if you’re heading to the Museum Village Markets on Sunday. Rasgueado Duo will be playing some live music, so grab a s’juice and a spring roll and enjoy the vibrant market vibes.

I am quite excited for the launch of Brodeine & Deine, a local designer’s new clothing line, held at an event on Friday the 20th and will also be showcasing some of Jaimen Hudson’s prints, both of which will be for sale on the night. Don’t forget your wallet. Go to page 8 for more details.

By Kyron Smithson So I feel as if I’m yet to regain composure after a hectic few weeks. Id just like to say thank you so much to everyone who came out and supported live music over the Christmas and New Year break. Live music cannot exist without an enthusiastic audience so once again thank you.

The 21st and 22nd of January see established Perth act Evergone play back-to-back nights at the Tearooms. My good friend Jon Carlson speaks exceptionally highly of these lads. Mike and Pete Sukys of Evergone where previously key members of Perth band The Meaning Of, I managed to catch this lineup at a hazy Big Day Out in my early twentys. Sonic bedlam may go a good distance to explaining the act. I felt rather ecstatic when I left the mosh pit. Mike carried on to bring Evergone together as his solo side project, playing covers and original tunes alike.

Personally I’m not one hundred percent sure what to expect from Evergone, though having an understanding of their musicianship I expect it to be rather spectacular. Head down on Saturday 21st Jan and Sunday 22nd of Jan to check them out.

Beach Dazed sprung to life in early 2016 as an all day family friendly event at the Tearooms, featuring a golden lineup of local artists. The event returns this year on Saturday the 28th of January (from 2pm) at the Tearooms. I’ve been slowly pulling together a chill lineup consisting of Thomas Clark, Myself, Pete McMahon, Rachel Vibart, Scotty Timmins, Franzone and Bodes followed by dj sets by Jace Bratten and Chris Pope. Shall be a cracking afternoon of tunes.

Entry will be a gold coin donation with all proceeds going to a local charity. Keep your eyes peeled, full promotion and finer details will be released asap.

Breakfasts include Eggs Benedict, Big Breakfast which includes a free coffee or tea and orange juice. Fresh juices also available. Breakfast is from 7.00am – 11.00am.

We provide a different variety at lunch including 3 different wraps, a Prawn and Avocado Salad or Beef and Cashew Salad. We also do a chicken or veal parmigiana or schnitzel as well as our renowned steaks. A children’s menu is also available. Lunch is served from 11.30am – 2.00pm. a wide selection is available for a dinner menu.

We have a variety of Entrée’s including salt and pepper squid and chicken crepes. For your main you can have anything from a lamb rack to a seafood combo to a chicken breast or even a pork belly. We also cater for vegetarians and gluten free. Dinner is from 5.30pm to late.

You can also have dessert which includes our homemade sticky date pudding or our homemade chocolate cake. All desserts are served with cream and ice-cream.

If your always looking for that perfect brownie recipe - this is the one. Easy to make and ready in minutes. Tried and tested at Esperance Tide head quarters. ingredients 115g unsalted butter 320g good quality dark chocolate 100g caster sugar 1 cup brown sugar 3 eggs

1/2 tsp vanilla bean paste 80g plain flour 1/2 tsp baking powder 11/2 tbsp cocoa powder Pinch of salt 90g milk choc chips

method 1. Preheat oven to 170˚C 2. Melt butter & 230g of the dark chocolate, cool slightly 3. In a separate bowl combine both sugars, eggs & vanilla. Whisk by hand to combine 4. Add butter & chocolate mixture, then sift over dry ingredients & fold them through mixture 5. Finely chop milk chocolate and remaining 90g of dark chocolate & add to brownie mixture 6. Pour mixture into greased pan (roughly 18cm x 27cm) 7. Bake for 25 minutes or until crusty on top and soft in the centre.

8. Leave to cool in the pan, then turn onto a wire rack. Once cool, cute into slices ESPERANCE tIDE

Once in a blue moon comes a movie that sweeps you off your feet and has you reeling with joy long after you walked out of the theatre. La La Land is that movie. The larger than life cinema experience, La La Land was a delight to the mind and the heart.

A film about two dreamers struggling to make it big, Sabestian a worshipper of jazz and Mia an incredible storyteller, Damien Chazelle has done so much more than weaving these two characters in a story together. He saved hopes, dreams, jazz and musicals all in one flawless attempt, by re- imprinting their beauty on our minds.

The poetic screen play is a pure delight as it proves that you can SEE rhythm and music unfold beautifully on screen. The masterpiece however is the last sequence where the story replays as a musical in a version that could have been.

You might feel a pang of guilt for the couple towards the end, but will certainly fall in love with the story.

The most common grasses you see growing around Esperance are the Coastal Sword Sedge and the Knobby Club Rush. You could be walking past these grasses every day on your way to the beach and not give them a second look. Mass plant in the garden or plant them to contrast against your greys and you will see them in a different light. They will be the Bear Grylls of your garden - they need nothing to survive and still look good. The Knobby can start looking a bit sad after a few years, but give it a hard cut back and it will spring back to life. The Sword sedge had a dwarf relation called Lepidosperma squamatum which is truly adorable and spectacular as a border mass plant, but can be tricky to get going. I think its worth the effort.

There are other grasses worth trying - Baumea juncea, Gahnia trifida and the Juncus kraussii and pallidus. All of these love wet feet, so are perfect for a water feature, and can also handle a dry spot.
