WHAT'S HAPPENING IN & AROUND TOWN What a fortnight! Was so great seeing the amazing turn out at the Grower’s Market and other events like the Museum Village Markets (which was on both weekends!), Larissa’s Afternoon Teal, the Beach Volleyball down at West Beach and the Esperance Cup. If your still recovering from the long weekend I highly recommend you read our 5 steps to recovery online, at our website.

This coming fortnight there is a HUGE amount on, basically we are being taken over by the Festival of the Wind. Bloody exciting, right? The popular ‘Taste of Esperance’ is SOLD OUT and tickets are becoming limited for other events so I suggest you book ASAP people! We have the full run down of events on the back page of this beautiful mag you just picked up.

Voting is on this Saturday the 11th, and the best way to vote is by heading down to Grower’s Market at Nulsen Primary School. Stock up on some veggies, sourdough bread, olives, grab a waffle and vote in the state election.

The Bay of Isles Leisure Centre is supporting a new campaign called #bealifeguard, encouraging as many people as possible to get involved with lifeguarding. A two day course is being held on March 26th and 27th and to enrol, head to www.lifesavingwa.com.au or call 9383 8200.

Lastly, if your not hungover on Sunday morning (or even if you are, it may help!) I would suggest attending the bootcamp & yoga session down at the Tanker Jetty. It is all about spreading awareness of mental health and keeping your mind clear and your body fit. $5 donation goes towards BOICO.

The week gone saw some okay waves around town with crowd numbers up due to the long weekend. This didn’t stop the retro mob from finless sessions and single fin expression (with one local surfshop worker managing to get barrelled at will). Longboards were also out in force for small days as were the Sups giving old boys something to ease the pain. The rest of the time a fishing rod would have been appropriate on the neaps.

The week ahead of surf looks like being onshore till the second half of the weekend. The Full moon on Sunday looks to bring suitable winds and tides to get the juices going. Two groundswells however on top of the existing short period swell may cause a jumbled ocean. Hopefully the spring tides keep some sense of order to give some fresh clean rides.

What were you doing before s’juice?

Before s'juice I was scaffolding, then I was my Dad's carer. After he passed away I was quite 'lost'. My in laws saw s'juice was for sale and Claire and I thought we would have a go at it.

How long have you lived in Esperance?

I’ve been in Esperance on and off since 1980.

What change have you seen Esperance had over last ten years?

It has certainly become a more modern and multicultural community over the last few years, two things that are in no way bad.

Favourite beach in Esperance?

I know it’s not the prettiest but I like going to Bandy Creek because it is calm and safe and Luca can run amok.

If you could park your van anywhere in the world where would it be?

Portofino for sheer beauty, but Lake Como is two hours from my Aunties house and my uncle is a truly incredible cook.

Favourite thing to do outside of work?

Being a Dad is the greatest honour a man could ever have, so to be with my family is all I want to do after work. I also love gardening but I'm a selfish gardener, I don't do flowers, if I'm going to put love and work into a plant I want something back, fruit, veg, herbs for cooking.

Also love Roman and Italian history, there's a substantial amount of it. Oh, and soccer, love love love it.

Do you cook, and if so what’s your fav meal to cook?

My favourite thing to make for dinner are reservations. I can't cook at all to be honest.

Mum was an extraordinary cook so I happily let her do it, it was like living in an Italian restaurant.

What’s your favourite juice on the menu?

To be honest I like all of them, my top three would be DTM (watermelon, orange, lemon, celery, beetroot, apple, ginger) Just Fruit (watermelon,orange, apple, pear, pineapple), Watermelon Cooler (watermelon, apple, ginger).

Each year passionate Esperance community members have the opportunity to showcase our beautiful region and local talent to the thousands of people visiting the Perth CBD during July.

Banners in the Terrace is one of WA’s biggest community arts projects, featuring around 80 banners from Councils all over the state. The banners are displayed along St Georges and Adelaide Terraces, during the Annual Local Government Convention each year.

The Shire of Esperance is looking for the best local design from local residents, schools, community groups and professional artists to really show off what is so special about our region.

The best local design which will be digitally printed on a huge banner displayed along St Georges and Adelaide Terraces in the City of Perth for all visitors and commuters to see, and be entered in the state-wide Banners in the Terrace competition.

Over the past years there has been a marked shift in the way live music is delivered. Large festivals that I grew up with such as Big Day Out and Soundwave no longer exist, having been replaced by smaller niche festivals. I think the audience is growing more discerning in their tastes, preferring events to cater to their particular music taste and interest. Artists I believe have embraced this change recognizing the need to evolve.

Entertaining and creating a unique stage presence has always been an important part of live music delivery, though with the down scaling of events artists are able to work with event managers/ promoters to create a unique atmosphere adding a dynamic dimension to their performance.

To create great music is an exceptional thing, recording and capturing that unique sound is an exceptional thing, I guess what remains for musicians is to really deliver on the live stage, to give the audience a memory an experience that will really stick with them. The Festival Of The Wind event Resonate After Dark (Saturday March 18th) will prove to be my first true foray away from typical licensed venue presentation of music.

The event will create a unique atmosphere and I am so excited to be a part of it. Tickets are still available and can be purchased online by visiting www.festivalofthewindesperance.org.au.

Personally as a promoter and event manager I find it hard to be creative when it comes to developing atmosphere. Our isolation is a limiting factor in that we have a limited audience also a limited number and range of musicians. This directly effects how niche an event can be while still remaining financially viable, though I’m sure there are creative solutions that will allow us to overcome these problems. I’ve had a number of very interesting conversations with great local crew recently, putting forward some interesting and exciting ideas, hopefully in the not too near future you will see kyzapresents moving in new and exciting directions.

Acoustic Session 15 takes place at Taylors Beach Bar and Café this Sunday March 12th from 4pm. Head down to catch Larissa Nichols, Bec Schutz, Marli Starcevich and Karen McLurkin throw down some fantastic vibes. How can we arrive at our destination - no more cats breeding in Esperance?

How do we move forward?

Perhaps the Esperance community could take the lead with a collective voice and spread the word about cat desexing; inform cat owners of their legal responsibilities; inform those in need of SAFE Esperance assistance; give a voice to the fact that it is no longer acceptable to breed kittens - there is power in numbers so lets all pull together and create a town that shows it cares about its wildlife and no longer wishes to see the production and suffering of unwanted cats and kittens - we can do it with your help.

In 2013 the Cat Act came into being - this required that all cat owners had their cat(s) desexed, microchipped and registered with the Shire - these are legal requirements. SAFE Esperance is now emerging exhausted from the latest kitten season - they have taken in 60 kittens between November 2016 and March 2017 (with another two litters waiting to come in) - you would therefore be correct in thinking that there are still a significant number of undesexed cats in Esperance and we suspect this is just the tip of the iceberg.

If you have a pension card or are in financial strife SAFE Esperance can assist with cat desexing and microchipping costs, enabling you to register your cat with the Shire and become legally compliant.

Netball Season

With the Netball season quickly approaching, now is a great time to start thinking about your injury prevention program.

Netball is one of Australia’s most popular team sports and come winter time, we will see the courts of Esperance filled with players, families and fans cheering on their local team.

So how do you keep yourselves and your kids injury free all season?

Knee and ankle injuries most common we see here at Esperance Physiotherapy, and most of these injuries occur whilst landing. These injuries can lead to lengthy stints out of the game with long rehabilitation and recovery.

Netball Australia has developed an online program which looks at ways to prevent landing injuries in Netball athletes, both recreational and elite, young and old. This program is designed for coaches, players and parents, with the aim to keep athletes involved in the sport they love without being sidelined by injury.
