The Tide is Turning

Esperance to me has always been a place warped by time. A town resistant to change and external influences, both geographically and figuratively isolated from the outside world.

Don’t get me wrong I love it here. This is where I was born and raised and I have always had an immense sense of pride to say I was from Esperance. I truly believe you couldn’t live in a better place. But in saying that I am excited to see a breath of fresh air on the south easterly sea breeze that howls across the bay. I’m excited to say the Esperance tide is turning.

I see young people returning after a period away with new ideas and a willingness to give it a go.

I’m watching Esperance businesses setting the bar higher, to not only exceed local expectations but to push the standards of what are expected beyond our own backyard. People investing their dollars in our town and trying something different.

I want to be someone to ride this wave of fresh enthusiasm and not get stuck out the back with the naysayers who call this town dead. You’ve only got to spend a couple of minutes on Facebook to see there are divisions within our community who seem to be hell bent on breeding negativity at any opportunity they can. And to what cause? I really do not know.

The banners that currently fly down the town centre call for people to “Live, Work, Visit and Invest” in our town. Well I plan on investing in my own local business, working my butt off to make it happen and living out my days here, while at the same time getting ever other bugger I can to visit this place of unpolished rugged beauty so they can see what the Esperance dream is all about and do the same.

My intent for writing this piece is not to criticise the Esperance of past, or offend those who have contributed years of energy to make this the great town that it is. Rather it is to celebrate the Esperance of today and all the fantastic things, both old and new that are happening in our town. Now is the time more than ever to support local businesses and initiatives, back an idea you might have to bring something new to town and engage with your local community. Progress is impossible without change so resist the urge to shy away from the unknown and let’s see where this tide can take us!

Over the past few years I have worked alongside a number of brilliant musicians, many of which have the ability to take their music too the next level.

Drive and motivation is the defining factor in how far a talented songwriter takes his or her art. Many musicians are happy for their songs to be heard by friends and family, which is highly admirable, though there are those who want nothing more than for their songs to reach and inspire a much wider audience. Michael Dunstan is one such lad having drifted in and out of Esperance playing a number of gigs over the last two years. Michael has close ties to Esperance and loves nothing more than swinging through to play some tunes, catch a few waves and down some casual frothies. Dunstan has recently released his first EP Solace, which is available to purchase through a number of online platforms including iTunes and Apple Music.

If you are looking for atmospheric stirring vibes Solace is a slice of music you will adore. Michael’s guitar work is exquisite creating an ambience that draws the listener into his artwork, commanding your full attention. I’ve seen Michael play live a number of times. One of the most memorable was at Caves House in Yallingup. Chris Vibart had created an epic visual scape with coloured lighting painting its way across leather clad lounge bar setting Michael’s sound mingling with an already gorgeous atmosphere to provide an ambience that stopped attendees in their tracks. Warm vocals characterize solace with fine harmonies rippling across a finely crafted soundscape. Michael will take to the stage this coming Saturday February the 11th from 7pm at Taylors Beach Bar and Café, supported by a fine group of locals including Joe Franzone, Rachel Vibart and Tom Clark.

Smart Tips for Travellers

“Getting the most from your holiday involves enjoying both the trip and the destination. While the focus is often on the destination, following some important tips can also make your trip both safe and enjoyable.

1. Preparation - Sort out your aches and pains a month before travelling to allow solutions to take effect and avoid that last minute rush.

2. Planning - look at your total distance and plan for activity breaks every 250 - 300kms. Perhaps more frequent if travelling with children or if older than 50.

3. Cockpit - Adjust your car seat so the base horizontal and lumbar support engaged. Try a small pillow behind your low back if you feel more support is needed. Make sure mirrors are correct and have a water bottle close at hand for hydration.

4. Equipment - Pack a football, tennis ball or frisbee and pre mark on your GPS the local sports ground or school for activity stops.

5. Driving Technique - Consider driving with a small pillow on your lap to support the weight of your arms. Try holding the steering wheel at 8 and 4 o’clock as this lessens neck, shoulder and arm fatigue = greater comfort and safety.

6. Activity - When driving remain active; wiggle side to side, pelvic rock and shrugs shoulders.

Music helps. Pick an appropriate safe time to perform these movements.

A wide selection is available for a Dinner Menu.

We have a variety of Entrée’s including salt and pepper squid and chicken crepes. For your main you can have anything from a lamb rack to a seafood combo to a chicken breast or even a pork belly. We also cater for vegetarians and gluten free. Dinner is from 5.30pm to late.

Fresh Paprika on Tostadas

Ingredients

• 1 garlic clove, finely chopped • 1 small red chilli, coarsely chopped • 3 coriander roots, scraped • 2 avocados, coarsely chopped • 100 gm cherry tomatoes, halved

• ¼ small Red onion, finely diced • Juice of 2 limes • 1½ tbsp olive oil • ½ cup coarsely chopped coriander finely diced • Tostadas • Fresh paprika

Method 1.

Combine all ingredients and mix with a fork, mashing the avocado to your liking.

Dice fresh paprika.

3.

Loaf guacamole onto your tostada and sprinkle diced paprika to your liking!

A little ray of Sunshine

...escape the ordinary

Ever looked into the bush and spotted a ball of yellow? In most cases this would be an Acacia (Wattle). Quite a few Acacias you probably wouldn’t consider for your garden as they are pretty much dominating the landscape as it is i.e. saligna, cyclops and cochlearis and they are very good at populating themselves. Not that its a bad thing as they are natives and are doing a great job looking good in some very harsh environments, as they are able to utilise nitrogen from the atmosphere so no need for fertiliser. There are however a couple of Acacias that would give your garden a sparkle when in full boom. Acacia pulchella is small, lovely green foliage, and a spectacular plant when in flower. Acacia cupularis is a little bigger and has a lovely shape with a fine leaf and of course the yellow flower.

Acacia glaucoptera can be grown more for its unusual shape, its commonly seen on the roadside on the way to Ravensthorpe, but is happily growing in my garden in deep gutless sand. For a ground cover try Acacia redolens, hardy prostate that has the yellow flower.

International Women's Day is coming up on March 8 and we are planning a series of fun and informative events throughout the month of Feb and start of March, to celebrate women, raise awareness about issues facing women and raise funds for organisations that support women world wide.

We are encouraging everyone in Esperance to use their skills and talents in raising money for an organisation that supports women's health or education. You could run a morning tea, a yoga class, a fun run. You could wash a car or run a raffle. Every action can make a huge impact for some one else.

There are already some fantastic events being planned. Renee Reid and Rachael Doney will be running an awareness event on Breast Cancer.

Megan from ESCARE wants to bring together women of Esperance from difference cultures to talk about their heritage and how they have assimilated into Esperance. Marli Starcevich and Myself are planning a musical feast at the Community garden and I am going to kick off my personal contribution by having a clothes sale in my driveway Sat 11th Feb from 7am. Boomerang Bags works to reduce the use of plastic bags by engaging local communities in the making of Boomerang Bags – community made using recycled materials, Boomerang Bags provide a free, fun, sustainable alternative to plastic bags.

By getting involved with Boomerang Bags, community members are participating in a national movement that celebrates a local grassroots initiative, community building and sustainability.

Boomerang Bags ‘communities’ are areas in which groups of volunteers get together to make bags regularly for the wider community to use.

We have a couple of sewing bees coming up 20th Feb and 28th Feb, with more to come in March, with details on the facebook group.

Recently I celebrated 10 years as a Property Consultant/Sales Rep in the Real Estate Industry. During those 10 years – I have found that the role I play for my clients during one of the largest life steps a person or couple can make - never fails to excite me. The importance and responsibilities that go along with it is a huge honour that they have allowed me to be part of their journey.

• Work out what YOU need and then what YOU want – sometimes needs mean more than the wants in life.

STEP TWO: Know your affordability.

• Know your budget • Know your boundaries and capabilities. Don’t over extend yourself.

Thankfully, Esperance is blessed with great people in all our Broker channels and Lending Institutions so you can’t go wrong with your decision on who to contact here.

Once you have these answers - you’ll feel a bit more comfortable to choose your Sales Representative to go shopping with.

What I’m about to say might surprise you but..

Sales Representatives in this region are very good at what we do. We all have different levels of service, different avenues, different personalities but on a whole, we look after Esperance people. We all work together well.

So regardless of market activity, prices and climate, Real Estate in our town is always portrayed in a positive light. Over the last year, I’ve represented a lot of local First Home Hunters who have purchased and taken advantage of the favourable Buyers’ market. Hopefully the trend will continue.
