WHAT'S HAPPENING IN & AROUND TOWN It’s beginning to feel a lot like December!

Christmas decorations are up in shops and the street lights are all ready to be switched on by Shire President V-Brown this Saturday night. The Christmas Pageant (and Carols by Candlelight) is scheduled for December 10.

Harvest is flying through as fast as those bloody burglars have been getting through every unlocked car and house in town.

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves! This weekend is shaping up to be very good, thanks to the Edge of the Bay festival. There’s a skate PHOTOGRAPHY CREDIT: LUCY VINCENT @LOVECHILDS_ comp on Saturday from 11-5pm, with junior pros flooding to town and local skaters ready to go. There’s also a huge (free!) live music lineup at the Soundshell on Saturday evening, with our best local acts and some pretty major Perth bands kicking off from 3pm.

Local designer Brodeine & Deine will also launch her stunning SS17 collection this Friday night, head to The Bridge on page 7 for the full lowdown. Speaking of fashion, It’s About Face will have visiting frame stylist Melissa Davies in store on December 6. For a sure way to shake up your look this summer, it might be time to treat yourself to some new shades or specs.

Next Friday, December 8 is the launch party of the Cannery’s epic new exhibition, Evolution Of The Surfboard. Think retro surf culture, live music, Lucky Bay brews, Mexican tacos and wood-fired corn from the Forage Taqueria as we pay tribute to a history that is so central to our lifestyle down here. Where were you in ‘62?

I was 12 years old, living on the 17th floor of a block of flats opposite North Melbourne footy club. Helped build my first surfboard (wooden) in my bedroom. First chance to surf it was at Cat Bay, Phillip Island. Proudly ran to the shorebreak and copped a face full of board. That board and I were so far removed from an active ocean, it’s now worth a chuckle. Had a bit of practise on Coolites before that.

I’ve had a few good boards over the years. The best board ever (so you think you’ve got a memory, do you?) was a 7’2” area pin tail. Ken McKenzie made it in 1976. That board loved Jakes and Gnaraloo, so said everyone who surfed it. It was capable of a lot more than I was. Our homemade leggies had evolved by then, but duck diving was still years away. Dive early, form a sea anchor and hope you didn’t get dragged too far in. My legrope leg is half an inch longer than the other one. Always a keen surfer, not a good one.

A film called ‘The Endless Summer’ changed a lot of people’s lives, mine included. Saw it in 1968 at the Heidelberg Drive-In with a noisy group of guys from the footy club. I never saw those guys after that. Instead I spent lots of cold days and nights sleeping in old cars, surfing winters, and I’m so glad I did. Wetsuits started showing up around then, they didn’t exactly turn winter into summer, but it was a start. The travel bit came easy.

It’s hard to believe we’re on the home stretch of 2017, but here we are heading into December, Christmas and all the end of year festivities.

The coming weekend will be packed with things to see and do with Edge of the Bay festival getting underway, a great opportunity to celebrate our gorgeous town and community.

To get your blood pumping, join the Roadwise free yoga and breakfast from 8am on Saturday at our unique and picturesque skate park, and have a good look at why a national skate bowl competition like King of Concrete would come all the way to Esperance! The competition kicks off at 11am and winds up at 5pm, where you’ll get to see both pro skaters and our own local superstars show us all what they’re made of.

From 3pm, local musicians like Tom Clark, Rowan Donovan, Rachel Vibart, John Ratcliff and Grand Casual will be entertaining droves at the Soundshell as part of the Illuminate Music Festival, after which we’ll be treated to tunes from some of Perth’s best musicians Brayden Sibbald, Ruby May and WAM’s Best Blues & Roots Act winners two years running, Old Blood. Unfortunately Elli Schoen is stuck in Bali, so she won’t be playing as advertised, but hopefully we can get her to Esperance sometime soon. Illuminate is a family-friendly event and alcohol-free, but there will be food vendors and refillable water stations on site.

Don’t forget the picnic blanket, sunscreen and your water bottle. At 8pm, before the headliners take to the stage, we’ll cross live to the lighting of the Christmas Tree and hear the Shire President’s address.

On Sunday the celebrations continue with the Edge of the Bay community markets from 8.301pm at the Museum Village, skate clinics at the skate park and the annual Seniors Christmas Dinner in the evening. This weekend, all ages in Esperance have a reason to Get Amongst It! Naomi Christensen

Live Music Sunday Sessions

Such an amazing weekend of live music and party vibes are upon us. It’s going to be hectic on my front and that is exactly how it should be.

Kick your weekend into action with the launch of Brodeine and Deine’s summer fashion collection. Brodie Bratten has been working tirelessly over the past months to bring you her latest designs, to be launched this Friday night at the Cannery Arts Centre from 6pm.

Live music will set the event’s tone, with myself, Daniel Senior, Callum Vincent (Perth) and DJ Jace Bratten laying down some sumptuous vibes in the courtyard. Lucky Bay Brewing will be on tap, with some tasty Gözleme options completing the festive atmosphere. The event is free to enter and open to all—hope to see you down there.

Saturday will see an amazing lineup at the Soundshell, with Illuminate—a free concert brought to you by the Shire of Esperance as part of this year’s Edge Of The Bay festival, featuring four amazing Perth acts. Old Blood will headline and are absolutely essential viewing. The lads have recently won the WAM Best Blues & Roots Act for the second year running. Ruby May returns with her full band, the Perth contingent rounded out by rising talent Brayden Sibbald. They will be joined by an all-star cast of Esperance original artists including Grand Casual, Rowan Donovan, Tom Clark, Rachel Vibart and John Ratcliff. The weather is looking fantastic for Saturday and I hope to see a big turn out. Illuminate kicks off from 3pm and carries on into the evening.

The Mindful Merve Guide To Tealeaf Reading 1. Make a nice, old-fashioned pot of tea, using loose leaf tea. Do not strain the contents when you pour it into the teacup.

2. Enjoy the tea. If you notice any bubbles on the surface, note that money is coming. Likewise, any tealeaf floating on the surface symbolises visitors are imminent.

3. Finish the tea, leaving about a teaspoon of liquid still in it. Holding the handle in your left hand, rotate the cup three times in a clockwise direction, then slowly upend the cup to drain the remaining tea. While you rotate, silently ask your question or ask for guidance about your future.

READING THE SIGNS Here are some common symbols, although there are no limits to what the leaves may read. The modern divinist may wish to give them a Google.

Emotions I know my name is ‘Mindful’ Merve, but even I sometimes seem to invite myself to argument. But the argument wasn’t going well, so my auto-pilot mind pulled out an old favourite put-down to stop my opponent in her tracks: “You are getting emotional,” I yelled.

This really is the dumbest thing I could say.

We need emotions, as without them, we would be unable to function.

Fear and anger are very basic and have kept us safe since we were first in the cave. Love provides the nurture necessary to us as mammals.

So telling someone they are emotional is like telling them they have arms or legs or a brain. They are part of us.

The trouble is, because we get so little training in understanding our emotions, we try to hide them or express them in ways that end up not going so well. Just watch the nightly news!

Learning to notice what our emotions are telling us requires some practise and a bit of patience with ourselves. So next time you start to bubble up inside, stop what you are doing (especially if you are yelling), take a breath, close your eyes. Become a scientist and look inside, find where that emotion is sitting and how it feels. Now, give it a bit of patience and a few breaths and notice what happens.

Remember: patience plus practise will not make you perfect, but it will make you a lot nicer to be around.

Smok’n it up Have you ever noticed that after a fire, the bush bounces back with extra rejuvenation and the wildflower season for years after is better than ever? I would imagine that bush lovers have taken note of the amazing floral display that we have experienced following our devastating bush fires in 2015. It has only recently been discovered by researchers at Kings Park in Perth that it is the chemical karrikinolide that triggers the germination of seeds lying dormant. As you can imagine, this was a massive breakthrough—opening up new opportunities for restoring, managing and growing our native plants. The application of smoke for nursery propagation, land rehabilitation and management is a vital tool and has meant that difficult-to-grow species are now being grown and returned to the bush.

After mentioning Kings Park & Botanic Garden in Perth, I have to say this is one of my favourite places on the planet! If you are in Perth, take the time to visit this botanical wonderland—it will inspire you to create one of your own.
