WHAT'S HAPPENING IN & AROUND TOWN New year, new Esperance?

We’re living in a local golden era and it’s been an instrumental year! As we look forward to all the exciting prospects 2018 has on offer, it really is worth reflecting on what’s been achieved in the last 12 months. There’ve been plenty of hip, new businesses spring up— like Knots & Weaves Co, Taylor St Quarters and Downtown Espresso. We’ve also seen existing businesses reach new levels—shout out to Bread Local, B Naturally You and Lucky Bay Brewing. We had a memorable Festival of the Wind, the Cannery Arts Centre has pumped out awesome events, and the Shire of Esperance did a great job with Edge of the Bay. So now we can celebrate!

The Rotary Club of Esperance Bay has taken one for the team in organising the New Year’s Eve foreshore fireworks, setting off at 9pm.

If you set up your picnic rug early, you’ll be able to hear the sweet sounds of Tim Currie, John Ratcliff, Firehorse and Axess Denied from 5.30pm.

The Esperance Motor Hotel has gone all out and will host a Tiki Party, with the Lazy Boys playing from 8pm. Go there if you like piña coladas, and hopefully not getting caught in the rain. Not to be outdone, the Pier Hotel has got Tre Amici in the main bar from 9pm, and DJs ready to liven up the Snakepit til late. Taylor St Quarters has got a snazzy event organised, with live music and DJs, pop up bars and an outdoor burger and taco barbeque in the mix.

Looking ahead, start thinking about heading down to the Quarters again on January 7, to enjoy a Sunday session accompanied with tunes by Larissa Nichols, Daniel Seinor, and Kyron Smithson.

So enjoy the New Year, everybody. We hope you’re inspired to set goals and accomplish them, to value-add our community and to throw your support around each other.

There are so many brilliant people living in this community and we can’t wait to see what you’re all made of!

Heaving barrels, not so heaving barrels, massive slabs, moving mountains, soft beach breaks, heavy beach breaks. My favourite was long-walled point breaks. Only when I read an interview with Mark Richards, where he said he wasn’t that obsessed with the tube—he’d rather a good bottom turn into a screaming wall—did I realise I wasn’t alone.

Considering the places I’ve lived, I would be the most under-tubed specimen of my age group, and the most unwashed. I accept the accolades for the last bit. One place I lived had heaps of point breaks and a thing we called ‘door rattlers’. Howling offshore winds that turned a 6’ swell into 100-metre walls that the wind wouldn’t allow to break. Miss it and you drowned in the spray. Catch it and you were as close to flying as you would ever get.

Even snowboarding had a hard time giving it a nudge.

Surf report: As it’s holiday time and we’ve had a terrible lead up to Christmas, the surf is about to pump. The unwashed are about to arrive and let us know how lucky we are here. It’s not for long, so smile, behave and then drop in on ‘em.

Flexin’ 101: The Tide Guide To 4WDing in Esperance One of the most enjoyable and iconic things about living in Esperance is our ability to enjoy endless stretches of beach from the comfort of our cars. If the increasing number of Ford Rangers around town is anything to go by, Esperance locals are constantly on the move, exploring Butty Head, giving it hurt in the Wylie Bay dunes or setting up the perfect camp spot at Victoria Harbour. While there’s a fairly large minority within the community who live and breathe the fourby life, it’s certainly not all of us. So, for visitors, new drivers and those who usually let someone else take the wheel, here are the things you need to know next time you hit the dunes this summer.

Let your tyres down First thing’s first. Before you hit the sand, you’ll want to let some air out of your tyres. The best all-round tyre pressure for sand driving is around 16 psi, and you can buy tyre pressure gauges for around $20 if you’re unsure. Letting the air out increases the size of the tyres’ footprint on the sand, so you have the same weight of the vehicle spread over about twice as much rubber.

This enables the car to climb up on top of the sand and float on it rather than digging in.

Read the tide (and The Tide, too, obviously) It sounds like the most obvious thing, but we cannot stress this enough. Sometimes when you’re in holiday mode, you can become a little bit laidback, but the tide does not wait for anyone. Be sure to plan your trip

around the ebb and flow of the tidal chart, or you’ll risk a stressful and risky drive home. Ideally, you want to be driving at low tide along the compacted sand by the shore, or alternatively, in higher up, pre-compacted tracks thanks to previous trailblazers.

Do no harm At the risk of sounding like the dune police, there are a few important things to consider.

First of all—speed. With kids and adults alike running amok on the beach, it’s important to slow right down when you’re passing people who have set up camp on the beach. Secondly, you can’t deny the fact that flexing your big rig in the dunes probably isn’t that good for the ecosystem, so at least be conscious of sticking to the tracks and avoiding leaving any rubbish behind.

When you get bogged If you’re not moving forward, you’re going down. First off, try to reverse out of your sticky situation. If you’ve bottomed out, you’ll need to think about digging yourself out and also removing any excess weight, namely people, out of the car. If all else fails, and you need to phone a friend with a snatch strap, remember to never use tow balls for recoveries, only use your tow-hook.

Pack plenty of water in case you’re waiting a while. Happy travels!

ESPERANCE TIDE

Esperance is an energy pioneer. We were the first town in Australia to feature a commercial wind farm in 1987. This truly impressive feat pushed the limits of economic, environmental and social thinking at the time.

Yet despite our remoteness and the massive global advances in energy technology, we haven’t continued to push energy boundaries since. Why? It doesn’t take a fancy consultant to get a rough idea whether our location has renewable potential. If a place attracts windsurfers, it’s usually good for wind energy. If a place attracts surfers, it’s usually good for wave energy. And if you need to put on plenty of sunscreen all year round, your solar panels will be punching out some decent energy, too. Esperance is blessed with an abundance of green energy. No problems with the resource.

This has been noticed by Horizon Power and local farmers. The 2015 fires burnt over 300 power poles, which weren’t rebuilt, but rather replaced with a micro-grid of solar PV, batteries and diesel-generator backup—clearly a cheaper solution for Horizon than replacing the grid.

This technology may be new to Esperance but is pretty ordinary by global standards. If it works at this micro-scale, economics suggests that it’ll be even cheaper at a bigger, town-size scale. No problems with the tech.

Usually the biggest and most expensive problem with renewables is storage, yet there are plenty of viable options here, like pumped hydro.

Basically, water is pumped uphill between two tanks whenever excess power is produced and when it’s needed again it heads back down, driving a generator on its way. Can anyone think of a big hill close to our town centre?

The latest in renewables is turning energy into hydrogen using seawater. It may sound far-fetched, but one day we could potentially pump clean hydrogen back up the gas link to Kambalda.

As of 2017, unsubsidised solar PV and wind are now cheaper than fossil fuels, enabling distributed grids to power Australia’s remote coastal communities. Who wouldn’t like a cheaper energy bill? We have the resource, we have the technology, but do we have the will to become a pioneer once again?

It’s so hard to be original.

Everything we have ever done has been done before, I feel like a copy of a copy of a copy, a carbon copy of a copy. It’s a lament experienced by artists from all backgrounds, no doubt. The music industry feels so saturated, with band after band receiving— let’s face it—Triple J attention and becoming relevant for what seems the blink of an eye.

Are the days gone where an artist could potentially create a truly unique and original sound? To stay artistically relevant for the entire span of their lifetime? I’m waiting in the wings, I need a new hero. I need an amazing act to reinstall my faith in the idea of true originality.

I’ve been revisiting a lot of the bands that initially broke me from the hold of commercial radio. Rage Against The Machine features rather highly in this personal reflection. RATM developed a truly revolutionary sound—that there’s no doubt in my mind had a dramatic impact on a generation’s psyche. As an artist, there is nothing more soul destroying than believing you have written a great song, and then for a friend to say, “Hey, that kind of sounds like…”.

Aargh. So how did RATM do it? How can we aspire to do it?

Interestingly, I think isolation can really help.

Being from a small town that encourages original music, without the influence of a highly developed music scene shaping you to fit a particular format, is no doubt beneficial.

So what is a reasonable goal to aim for, as an original artist nowadays? Having a cracking live show is a brilliant place to start, maybe making your music about something a little bigger than yourself. Perhaps if we focus on creating something special for the audience, their belief will lead to a space an individual or band is unable to imagine for themselves.

To me, that’s kind of exciting.

1kg chopped cored tomatoes 1/2 cup sugar juice from 1/2 lemon 1 tbsp fresh ginger, finely chopped 1 pinch ground cumin 1 pinch ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp curry powder 1 teaspoon salt

500g beef mince 1 egg chilli powder to taste salt and pepper

2 tbsp tomato jam (above) 1 burger patty 2 tbsp shredded cheese 1 bagel, toasted 3-4 slices bacon, cooked with grease saved 1 egg, cooked sunny side up 1/4 avocado, sliced thin

METHOD The Tomato Jam: 1. Add the tomatoes, sugar, lemon juice, ginger, cumin, cinnamon, curry powder and salt to a stainless steal pot and turn the heat to mediumhigh.

2. Once the mixture begins to boil, reduce the heat to medium-low and continue to simmer, stirring often, until the mixture reduces and thickens into a jam like consistency; about 1 hour.

The Burger Patty: 3. Meanwhile, add your beef and chilli powder in a bowl and gently mix together - being sure not to overwork the meat - and form into a patty shape and season with salt and pepper.

4. Set aside and heat up your grill or cast iron to medium high heat.

The Breakfast Burger: 5. Spray the surface of whatever you’re using to cook the patty and add the meat, allowing it to cook for a few minutes on each side until it’s cooked all the way through. Turn the heat off and add the gouda on top.

6. Toast the everything bagel until crispy on the outside and smear both sides with the homemade tomato jam.

ESPERANCE TIDE

As the year comes to an end, many may be wondering what the stars have in store for next year. I can’t help you with Astrology, but I can give you a sneak peek of just some of the stars that are Esperance-bound in 2018!

Inspired by a hot flush and a bottle of wine, Menopause the Musical is heading to Esperance in April. Jeanie Linders created the musical as a celebration of women who are on the brink of, in the middle of, or have survived ‘The Change’. Since its first performance, the show has evolved as a ‘grassroots’ movement of women who deal with life after 40 and all the challenges they conquer mentally, physically and spiritually.

Sun Rising is a show paying tribute to the musical greats of Sun Records and will appeal to anyone with a love of the songs that made Memphis.

If you’re a particular fan of Johnny Cash, you’ll also love A Boy Named Cash. Monty Cotton has been travelling the globe performing his entertaining show and he’ll be bringing it to Esperance in March.

The Lighthouse Girl is a play that brings to life the stories of those left at home during the war, and the struggles of the young men who valiantly enlisted to help defend their country. It’s based on Albany author Dianne Wolfer’s wonderful novels Lighthouse Girl and Light Horse Boy. Lastly, Opera lovers will be happy to know the City of Perth Opera in the Park: La Bohème will be simulcast live to the Esperance Civic Centre in 2018, and if you’d prefer some live opera, we have you covered with the Co-Opera’s Barber of Seville, which tells the comic story of Figaro, the friendly neighbourhood barber with wits and tricks as sharp as his razors.
