So here we are at the end of January already. Australia Day has arrived and the Swim-Thru has been swum.

If you haven’t already been down to the Adventureland Park markets, you should—there’s live music, food vendors and stalls galore. Tonight, you’ve got Kyza and DJ Jackson Juice playing at the Esperance and The Vans Band at the Pier, before the nightclub opens up at 10.30pm if you’re feeling bold. On Saturday, take some time out of the Triple J countdown to visit CanJam at the Cannery. There’s live music from 1pm, art markets, kids activities, food stalls and the whole Lucky Bay Brewing range on tap. While you’re there, you can’t miss Chris Siemer and Lucy Vincent’s exhibition Sea Bones in the gallery, which has been extended until January 31. Looking ahead, now is the time to start thinking about signing up for local sports if you’re sticking around this winter. There will also be an Open Mic event on the Cannery lawn next Saturday, February 3. Get around it!

Secret spots. A bit like fish in the ocean. Fifty years ago there were lots of them, not so today.

A lot of crew were into the need for secrecy from day one. In some instances, just not parking your car in full view kept the rabble at bay for an astounding length of time. There are still some spots out there, no doubt. I know a few. Idiots don’t know about them, that’s why they are still secret.

For many years, the intellectually challenged didn’t know how to go for a surf, shut up and tell no one. Sadly, a lot of dipsticks couldn’t figure it out— “I only told me mates at a party”. I’ve come across a few morons holding centre stage at a party, boasting about a break they’ve never seen work. I told no one nuthin’.

I’ve seen destinations go from two out to totally wrecked within a couple of years. It wasn’t just the crowds, but the impact on the places. Foreshores ripped apart for firewood. Annihilation of reefs and fish stocks. Marine life in general copped it, the proverbial piscatorial desert. The explorers weren’t so bad, a lot had earned them the right to be there and most of them knew the drill. Take the quiet memories and leave only footprints. The map readers were the destructive species.

A sad combination of verbal diarrhoea and, “Look at me, I’m wonderful”. Most of them couldn’t surf for shit, but boy, could they talk.

Magazines didn’t help. I bought them and drooled over the travel issues, but I still told no one nuthin’.

PS. The sharks didn’t invent the factory ships or drift netting, and just because a species of fancy ape has screwed up the ocean balance, they’re not about to go vegetarian.

Whether it’s an investment property, a spare room, or a homeowner looking for someone to pay the rent while they’re on holiday, plenty of locals are jumping on the bandwagon. But there are some pitfalls to the Airbnb game, according to Heasman & Associates accountant Mark Murgatroyd. “As the popularity of accommodation-sourcing websites like Airbnb grows, it is important for property owners to be aware of the tax consequences,” he says. “The income you receive from your Airbnb rent will be taxable and claiming expenses against your Airbnb income gets a bit more tricky.” These are the tax tricks you need to know.

Pick your price wisely

Know your claims

Cheap Airbnbs are awesome, but there are dangers in charging a low price. If at the end of the year your rental expenses exceed the rental income, you make a loss, and this can be claimed against your salary and other incomes. But if you’re not charging a commercial rate—ie. lower than what the rental market is doing—be aware that the ATO may dispute the claim, Murgatroyd says. “Make sure you charge a commercial rate, particularly if you are making a loss from your venture.”

“Only direct expenses can be claimed in full,” Murgatroyd says. This includes advertising, Airbnb fees, cleaning and repairs. The rest of the expenses need to be appropriately apportioned. “If you and the renter have equal access to say, the lounge and kitchen, you can deduct 50 percent off the expenses for these areas,” he says. “For example, the furniture, TVs and kitchen items.” As far as internet and mobile use to deal with bookings goes, you need to accurately work out what percentage of the monthly bill relates to the Airbnb venture. Property expenses like rates, interest and utility bills must also be split into private and Airbnb components, usually on a floor-area basis and time used basis.

Mind your availability It’s important to be conscious of how often your room is actually rented. Whether the room is available all year but only really occupied for a fraction of that time, or whether you only put it up for lease during summer, the rate of occupancy will impact your claims at tax time. “If you only rent out one or two rooms in your private residence for part of the year, you can only claim expenses for the portion of the year that the room was available to rent,” Murgatroyd says.

But all jokes aside, competition is fierce among Esperance eateries argy-bargying for the honour of the town’s Best Sausage Roll. To end the debate once and for all (or for now), we took one hungry tradie on her lunch break and a smorgasbord of locally crafted, pastry-wrapped slabs of minced meat and vegetables. The standard was high, with all chefs putting in an impressive effort, but as we all know, there can be only one winner.

Longtime supporters of the Esperance Tide, we were excited to pop in to visit and see how our friends were travelling on their journey to sausage roll nirvana. Sure enough, their offering was a meat lovers delight. “It’s very meaty, there’s not a lot of veg involved but I think that will appeal to a lot of people,” our expert judge said. “The pastry is quite thick, so it balances out quite well.”

Aurelia’s has been claiming their ‘famous’ sausage rolls as the best in Esperance for a while now, and their pies have a great reputation, so our expectations were high when the time came to taste their handiwork. The sausage roll was sprinkled with herbs, which made it stand out from the pack and gave it a more gourmet edge. “It’s full of flavour, it’s kind of herby and tomatoey at the same time,” she said. Extra points were given for a light, flakey and golden pastry. The most expensive of the range, the judge deemed the added cost “worth it”.

Fairly light in colour, this sausage roll was more traditional and will appeal to those seeking a classic flavour, though it still had a lovely, homemade feel.

Having sold out of their regular sausage roll, we opted for the cheese and bacon variety, which we were told was their best seller. While admittedly a bit of a wildcard, the judge was impressed with the flavour, and “good, flakey pastry”. “It’s actually quite delicious,” she said. “The texture of the meat is good, it’s not too dry and not too sloppy.” Special consideration was taken, given this was the first sausage roll the famished judge sampled. Points were lost for the roll’s appearance, which she said, “Could have been more golden.”

To keep things interesting, we opted for the ‘chilli sausage roll’ and were excited for a scorcher. But our judge, who eats a lot of spicy foods, reported; “it’s not that hot at all”. “It is pretty tasty though,” she said. “It does kind of taste like they’ve used breadcrumbs or some sort of cereal to plump it up a bit, but it’s well cooked and the meat is nice and moist.” Points were added for a puffy, super flakey pastry and a good meat-to-pastry ratio. As the competition is set to intensify, this one was deemed the ‘one to watch’.

It’s not super high in flavour but I think if you’re someone who likes to keep it simple, you’d be into it.” Points were subtracted for the breadcrumb-to-meat ratio, which she said claimed was a little light on the mince side. “There are plenty of great options in the French Hot Bread pie warmer, this is perhaps not their strongest entry,” she concluded.

Our community is built on oil—namely canola, but there are still plenty of other oils worthy of your attention. They are the sensual and essential oils that have the power to lift our spirits, ease our tension and cure our ailments when used correctly.

Whether you’re using them topically, spritzing or burning, be sure to give these essentials a crack.

Sweet orange oil

Lavender

Peppermint

Lavender is the big-shot of the essential oil world a reason. It’s a very effective sedative and works obscenely well with anxiety. A good way to use lavender oil is to spritz it on your pillow, or you can always just apply it topically with a carrier oil. Use it daily for a world of calm.

Peppermint really ups the anti: antispasmodic, antiviral, antimicrobial, antifungal, and antioxidant.

It has the most uplifting aroma and is good in an oil burner if you’re trying to avoid a home that smells too much like an opium den. It doesn’t just soothe nausea, it’s also said to improve concentration and memory, so it’s a great study companion.

Lemongrass You’re familiar with it because it makes for a lovely cup of tea, but did you know lemongrass is also a great insect repellent? Both in the garden and on your skin. Add a few drops of essential oil into your favourite body lotion and you’re good to go! It’s also a known remedy for the topical treatment of dandruff. Personally, I like to add a few drops of it into my bath when I’m feeling unwell.

I read recently that the UK parliament has appointed a Minister for Loneliness. It seems really sad that such a position is needed, but it can’t be denied that loneliness does exist, even in our beautiful town.

People of all ages and walks of life can experience loneliness. Sometimes it occurs suddenly through death or divorce or it just creeps up slowly over time.

Hello, summer. Sweet orange oil smells like happiness and has a whole bevvy of benefits, especially its antidepressant qualities. Spritz it on aeroplanes when you need a boost of energy/ reminder that fresh air exists—it’s a real top-up for a sense of general wellbeing.

Eucalyptus Anti-fungal and antiseptic, eucalyptus oil is every domestic goddess/gods’ secret weapon, especially when combined with vinegar and bicarb soda, with the added bonus it doesn’t leave your house smelling like Pine O Cleen. It’s also the bomb when it comes to cold and flu or nasal congestion. This high menthol oil will not disappoint.

Preventing loneliness takes effort by us all. If you find yourself disengaged from family, friends or community, think about what you value in regards to connection with others and set a small goal to reach out in some way. If you are a person who does not experience loneliness, practice some empathy for those that do—even a smile, a hello or short conversation can be of benefit to a lonely person.

It can also benefit you to engage with people who feel alone because helping others is great for your mental health.

Being inclusive of others can open up new possibilities. The old adage, ‘If you don’t try, how will you know’ is tried and true. Make an effort this year to join with others so that we don’t have to have our taxes spent on a Department of Loneliness.

I recently returned from a cracking few days on the road with Grand Casual and the maestro Roobs. It was absolutely invigorating and I racked up three of the heartiest gut chuckles I’ve experienced in the past year. How golden is it to laugh until you cry? Joe hands a random tourist his phone and asks if they would take a photo of him in front of Greens Pool. Joe then proceeds to strike hilarious poses. I honestly nearly cried myself to death.

The kangaroo paw is the most stunning plant to have in your garden and it’s not only beautiful but also great for attracting birds. Esperance has only one local kangaroo paw, and that’s the anigozanthos rufus. You can’t miss its flame-red flowers that line the roads, mostly in the east towards Condingup and west towards Ravensthorpe. They love a fire, so will be especially prolific where they have been burnt out.

If you are lucky enough to have any variety of kangaroo paw in your garden then now is the time to give them some attention. One of the biggest issues with kangaroo paw is ‘ink spot’ caused by a fungus, which germinates and grows out into the leaf, turning it black. The best thing to do is get rid of the spent foliage straight after flowering.

Hold onto the old stems and give them a firm pull,

which will take part of the rhizome tissue. This is where the new growth will come from, so if there are new shoots coming from it then you can trim the old stem and plant the rhizome for a new plant.

Getting rid of all the old stems thins the plant out, making more room for the next season’s flowers and less room for snails and slugs.

Lastly, remove any ugly inky tips at the ends of the leaves and the job is done!

Another West Australian favourite is anigozanthos flavidus, which has green and red flowers, but I would certainly try to get our local paw if you can find it.
