Ah Easter, the universal Christian symbol of new life and the unofficial south Western Australian symbol of the start of hibernation. It’s the best time of the year, shadowed only by the realisation a chilly winter is fast approaching.

But the Christians could be onto something. Let Easter be a symbol of your new life—a life of interests beyond work, drinking, camping and the occasional live band. You could use the cooler months as a chance to try new things, to pursue interests you always liked the look of but never got around to trying.

Support our local sporting clubs, our live music scene, but don’t neglect other realms of amusement. Try an ArtLab workshop, learn a new language, a musical instrument. Weekends indoors can be luxuriously spent with Netflix, yes. But how about some YouTube tutorials?

As our article with local artist Geoffrey Smith denotes, the arts have a fairly uncertain future in our world—much less in a community like Esperance—and what vibrancy would be lost if fine craftsmanship was to die out.

So here’s to the next few months, a chance where we can finally get stuff done without that distractingly beautiful azure sea luring us away from our goals. Bring it on!

The things you do to your vehicles to go surfing.

Some of my fondest memories (now, not then) are of monumental efforts to get to a break, usually for no great reward. Sadly and financially, the surf-mobile at the time was sacrificed for the effort. One time it took three hours to go 100 yards up the Murchison River looking for a way across. In the end you put your two boards, a quiver in those days, under the wheels just to get out. Testament to the glass jobs, not the intelligence of the driver.

We used to go up north with nothing we didn’t need.

Milk powder, no dog food, no alcohol, no generators, no eskies. An old Holden with springs bending the wrong way that could only take so much. Extra fuel, extra water and not much else. We fed the dogs off

buff bream. It took them a couple of days to get the message. Couple of weeks later, they’d never looked better.

Over the years I’ve had some cracker vehicles. MK1 Consul—first trip to Raglan.

An A35 Austin—first trip to Mahia. Triumph Herald—one of many trips to nowhere.

Numerous Holdens and Falcons and the things we did to them are insignificant to others, but so meaningful to those who were there. Couple of Toyotas, too.

With Easter upon us, many use these precious days off to pack the camper, caravan, tent or a simple swag and head out into nature. With an esky full of meat and drinks, the idea of some relaxation in the bush or on the beach is a welcoming thought. Once you arrive, a good spot is located, out come the chairs and with a drink or perhaps a fishing rod in hand, that ‘ahhh’ moment occurs. Now it’s time to really enjoy your beautiful surroundings.

Being in nature is the best way ever to practise your mindfulness. It’s almost impossible not to make contact with the present moment when you’ve got the sun on your face or a breeze brushing your skin. Take off your shoes and feel the sand beneath your feet or the sensation of salt water on your skin. Listen to the sounds of the surf or birds. Head off for a walk on your own, take it slowly and simply notice what is around you. Allow that busy mind of yours to rest as you absorb your beautiful surroundings. Thank yourself for making the effort to take time out in this exceptional environment. Remember, gratefulness is your mind’s best friend.

RETURN TO WOODY There’s not a single local around who doesn’t have fond memories of their time spent on Woody Island.

There’s something about it that takes you back to simpler times. Time itself moves slowly, forcing you also to slow down, think more, speak less.

Woody is a noisy ecosystem of birds, crabs, fish, insects and it’s a microcosm of civilisation—you get the feeling island life has its own distinct justice system. You realise it when you leave your safari hut door unlocked, hear it in the camp kitchen discussions about whose duty the dishes are. It’s in the whispered quarrelling of children’s hierarchies, newly formed alliances between the gangs of kids who navigate the island single file in order of height. Settlers aside, the island also brings its own microclimate, a constant cycle of cloud formation, rain and blinding sunlight that fills the bay with glitter.

When we arrive on the island, it’s bucketing down.

We take shelter in our safari hut and decide, in the spirit of being on holiday, to open a bottle of red. Woody Island Eco Tours camp host Peter May, who kindly comes to check we’ve settled in okay, notes the half-full glasses shrewdly

and declares, “It’s a bit early for that shit!”. We laugh sheepishly—we have no excuses and don’t attempt any. Island justice also seems to stamp out pretence the second you step off the boat, it keeps you honest. But we keep sipping and the midsummer rain is lovely, the island is so sheltered from the prevailing winds we suspect that even in winter, this place would still be the ultimate escape.

By 1pm, the storm has passed and the birds are chirping, so we close the covers on our books and hit the track. All of us—about 20 on the island— spend the afternoon on the beach in the golden light, not quite believing our luck, before the sun sinks behind the cliff and we head up the hill for a hot shower. After that, it’s time for dinner.

The combination of hunger and the fact that everything is barbecued makes everything we eat on Woody extremely yummy. In the camp kitchens,

we chat to the other guests on the island and prepare a cheese board before stealing away back to our hut, to feast on melted brie and sip gin and tonics until dark.

You wake up early on Woody. Chattery birds and stark sunlight makes sure of that. While we wait for the sun to warm up, we prepare a big breakfast and sip steaming cups of tea from tin cups, getting out our books but then getting distracted by the symphony of wildlife around us.

At the jetty, we spot the fishing rods and decide to try our luck. On the third cast, a good-sized squid lunges for the jig. Later, a yacht glides into the bay, and Peter May ferries out to get them.

Visitors are encouraged onto the island, and make the most of the newly licensed bar and food on offer.

Too soon, it’s time to go and we reluctantly embark for the 20-minute journey back to town.

We want to stay longer, but unlike rushed weekend trips away, one night was still enough to feel replenished. We return to Taylor Street relaxed—accustomed to a calmer existence—and a little sad to say goodbye to the families we journeyed with. For all the talk about the ‘kids of today’, Woody Island is, among other things, a nice reminder that they’re really the same as the kids of yesterday. They, like all of us, are just living in a world so far removed from this honest, slow-paced paradise right off our doorstep.

In safe, capable hands, the beloved island has been returned to its former glory with a trajectory that will only go up. Returning soon is a must.

Turning sand into soil makes cents Growing in Esperance’s gutless sand is a huge challenge. The good news is that sandy soils can be improved and converted into a healthy growing medium. The bad news is that it may take time and initial outlay of funds. The main problem with sand is that it has a small surface area so cannot hold water and nutrients, compared to clay soils that have a larger surface area and can retain nutrients and water. Adding clay to your soil in the form of Bentonite clay will greatly improve your soil.

The application rate is about 300g per square metre dug into about 6cm of sand, at a cost of about $1 per kg. Next step, is to add organic matter to create a healthy living soil. This can be in the form of animal manures, compost, straw, etc. The

organic matter will not only provide important nutrients but will also help stop your soil from drying out.

As it’s Autumn, we’ll soon be seeing some rainy days—free water. This is the best time to give your soil a bit of love and attention so that when summer comes around again, the garden won’t need as much water, meaning a return on your investment.

The survey also found the top activities for young people were playing sports (75.2%), spectating sports (65.4%) and volunteer work/arts/cultural/ music activities (54.1%).

Each year they encourage Australians aged 15-19 to speak up about the issues that concern them through Australia’s largest online youth survey.

In 2017, they had over 24,000 responses. For the first time in the survey’s history, young people identified mental health as the most important issue in Australia today. The three main areas listed were school and study, coping with stress and body image. Concerns about mental health trauma have doubled since 2015.

Research has identified a clear nexus between creativity and addressing mental illness. Considering young people’s concerns about mental health, expanded access to sport and creative arts activities could be a key support. Like exercise and team building, creative arts therapies such as dance, music, poetry, drama and art provide opportunities for young people to express emotions symbolically that they may otherwise not be able to communicate.

Continued funding for these activities is paramount.

Where youth experience economic deprivation and do not have the financial provision to participate, subsidized support must be found either through philanthropy or grants and scholarships.

Not only would this altruism provide intrinsic support, but also send the powerful message that as a community this young person is central to all of us, their wellness has worth and that collectively we want them to live an optimistic and meaningful life.

All the Light We Cannot See

You’ve probably already heard of Anthony Doerr’s Pulitzer Prize-winning, New York Times bestseller All The Light We Cannot See. And you’ve probably heard good things. The story centres around Marie-Laure LeBlanc, the daughter of a widowed master locksmith at the Museum of Natural History in Paris, who crosses paths with gifted orphan turned Nazi Warner Pfennig in picturesque seaside town Saint-Malo after the Germans take Paris.

as her imminent rape and murder at his hands.

While gifted orphan Werner is in training for his elite division of the Hitler Youth, the boys each take turns to throw buckets of water on a bound prisoner who eventually freezes to death in the snow.

It contains all the ingredients of a pleasing wartime novel. There are virtuous protagonists who overcome adversity, picturesque settings in snow-capped German mountains, prewar Parisian streets and French seaside towns. There are captivating diamonds, victorious glimpses of French Resistance, enough Jules Verne references to last you a lifetime and plenty of wonder about science and technology conveyed through the warm crackle of radio signal.

These extremely disturbing scenarios are somehow glazed over by Doerr’s romantic prose.

Those pretty settings and endearing characters abound, seemingly unconnected to the horror of the world around them. Characters are portrayed too much as individual moralistic entities rather than cogs in the horrific Second World War machine, and there is danger in aestheticising a horrific chapter of human history, whether the novel is fiction or not.

But there is something about how stomachable this novel is that makes it intolerable. There are scenes of extreme violence—the blind and vulnerable Marie-Laure spends days hiding from the villainous Nazi gemologist von Rumpel, suspended in terror of what she anticipates

If you can blind yourself to the implications of this novel, you’ll find an enjoyable read about the enduring human spirit and the tragedy of war. The problem is, once you see it, the darkness of this novel cannot be unseen.

Introduction to the Mandelic Peel

My name is Lucy, I’m 22 years old, and I have been fighting acne since I was 13 years old.

Obviously everyone around my age has their own insecurities, it’s impossible not to. Mine was always my skin, and being the first place people look at and talk to, it really drove me crazy.

Easter is always a fantastic time of year in Esperance. Our weather tends to hold up, suiting a great deal of locals and tourists as they take advantage of the long break and hit our fantastic coastline. A few years ago, I vowed to avoid camping over the Easter weekend. All the best spots become crowded, I figured better not to join the majority when our famed beaches lay at our doorstep the other 51 weekends of the year.

So then, what do we do if we stay in town? Music, why the hell not.

Around a year ago, I struck up a conversation with local legend Rowan Donovan. Donovan, full of wisdom proceeded to tell me about a two-piece act from Perth called Command A Panda. Honestly whose interest wouldn’t be peaked just by the band’s name? Classy. Then I started to listen to their tunes and I thought, ‘These guys have got to come to Esperance’. My music taste has varied a great deal over the years, though the sound that rings most true for me, these guys produce. Gritty hard-hitting rock and roll, stripped back full of honesty and energy—exactly what you need for your Easter break. I’m going to leave it up to you to do some research though these guys are the business. Command A Panda will be supported

by Grand Casual, Rowan (The Man) Donovan and local legend DJ Nevster on Saturday, March 31 at the Esperance Motor Hotel. Tickets are $10 on the door, come dressed in your finest Op Shop attire. THE ARTIST’S JOURNEY AND THE FUTURE OF SPEEDLINE ART

by Jesse McCarthy-Price There’s that overused John Lennon quote that says, “Life is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans”.

Geoffrey ‘Speed’ Smith is a man of few words, but when I meet with him to chat a little about his life and career, it’s that clichéd quote that comes to mind.

Smith was supposed to be a farmer, until fate intervened, steering him on a rollercoaster course through a 30-year long career as an artist.

But in a mass produced modern world, Smith feels unsure of whether there is a future in his artform, or any artform at all. “It’s just the reality with all crafts today—everyone is struggling to be viable. You are a point where you just think, ‘What am I doing?’.”

return to work seasonally to make money, before he’d hit the road, bound for Cactus, spending months at a time housed in shanties of old caravans, tarpaulins and swags.

“There were people from America, South Africa, all these people on the road, surfing. I went down there and I met that crew and of course, all the drugs and the quality of the gunja and acid. The world class waves, I was committed to riding those wave as best as I could. I thought, ‘Man, there’s more to life than Grass Patch, that’s for sure’.”

It was around this time, Speed started painting.

Always drawing as a kid, he decided to try his luck at painting surfboards. He was inspired by the album art of bands like Yes designed by artists like Roger Dean, popular during the early ‘70s. Teaming up with his mate, the now renowned boardshaper Paul Gravelle, Smith’s future once again took a turn, propelling him into the art world.

Raised on a farm in Grass Patch, it was a trip to Penong that altered his life forever. The dusty South Australian town was much like every other rural community around him, except for one small fact. It was harbouring a secret. Just 21km down a dirt road were world class waves.

Suddenly life as he knew it lost its allure. Was he ever tempted to return to a life on the farm? “Not once I started surfing, nah” he laughs. He would

Smith is not the kind of person who would ever desire fame. Every inch of his being tells you that.

But there’s a sort of vindication that is central to every artist’s creative process, When I ask him what it is he wants his art to achieve, he shrugs uncomfortably and we both say with the same uncertainty, “Survival?”

The reality is, Smith’s art form is dying. The modern surfer isn’t interested in sturdy boards like Paul Gravelle’s. Worshipped like gods at the altar of the WSL circus, pro surfers serve as brand ambassadors to a small handful of performancebased brands. Popularity for these machineshaped boards skyrockets, leaving the rest of the industry in the dust. And with high price tags on them, there’s little budget or desire left for artwork.

“I’m completely self taught,” he says. “I got magazines on how to use the airbrush and picked up skills. I’ve bought a lot of books and studied heaps of different artists, particularly in fantasy art—artists like Rodney Matthews who did those Uriah Heep album covers and all those bands—I really liked all that work.”

By the 1990s, Smith had hit the road, touring his artwork and donning his best salesman smile to promote is creations.

“I thought, ‘I’m going to get really stuck into this and see where I can take it’. I’d sell cards, posters—I was getting by financially. I used to be able to stay afloat and surf, and I’d do a little bit of [limestone] stonework in between.”

If you were in Esperance by the late 90’s, you knew Smith’s art by sight: Speedline Art was everywhere.

“There are so few of us,” Smith says. “A few blokes are still plugging away, but they’re not making much money. They’re making beautifully crafted surfboards, but they’ve gotta compete with machines.”

For financial viability, Smith says he would have to at least consider a move to Margaret River or Byron Bay, a suggestion about as good as a fin to the crotch. A move to the Australian capitals of commercial surfing probably isn’t on the cards for a man who has spent his whole life ducking crowds.

And so, the future is uncertain, but that’s nothing new for Speed Smith. Fate has been kind to him—few get to touch the ocean so thoroughly, live so lightly. If the less-travelled road his life has ambled along is anything to go by, the next chapter may be foggy but it sure can still be bright.

Hot Cross Bun

BREAD & BUTTER PUDDING 2 0 • ES P E RA N C E T I DE

METHOD

Suns out, buns out.

1. Preheat a fan forced oven to 180°C. INGREDIENTS

2. Grease an eighteen centimetre wide, 6cm high ovenproof baking dish with butter. Set aside.

50g unsalted butter 6 hot cross buns 1 tub quince paste 4 free range eggs 1/4 cup caster sugar 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon 2 cups milk 1 1/4 cup thickened cream 1 tspn vanilla extract 2 tbsp demerara sugar 1 cup crème fraîche to serve

3. Cut the hot cross buns in half and spread generously with quince paste and butter. Place the buns back together and arrange in prepared baking dish. Set aside.

4. To make the custard, place the eggs, caster sugar, cinnamon, milk, thickened cream and vanilla extract into a large mixture bowl and whisk together until well combined.

5. Pour mixture over the hot cross buns and allow to stand for five minutes to allow the custard to be soaked up by the buns.

Gently push down on the buns if they happen to slightly float, then sprinkle with demerara sugar.

6. Place into the preheated oven and bake for fourty minutes or until set. Remove from the oven and serve immediately with crème fraiche.
