Can you believe we’re flying towards the end of summer already? It’s been an absolute belter and the best part is we’re only getting warmed up, with the best part of the year about to unfold. We’re talking gorgeous, mild weather and a whole calendar of entertaining activities, including this weekend.

The Pier Hotel will be the place to be tonight, with Jackson Juice playing a DJ set in the front bar from 9pm. With entry setting you back $0, what’s the worst that could happen?

CanJam Volume 2 will take hold of the Cannery this Sunday, so head down to the gallery for live music, Lucky Bay brews and plenty of activities to keep the kids entertained. No doubt, there will be an exodus from the Cannery to the Quarters later in the arvo, as Caravãna Sun take the stage. It’s thrilling to have such high-calibre events to look forward to because it’s a testament to Esperance’s positive direction. Of course, if we want more stuff like this in future, we need to vote with both our feet and wallets, so hopefully everyone gets around it this weekend. As Caravãna lead Luke Carra mentions on page 9, presale is key to drawing bigger and better acts, so don’t be reluctant to commit early!

Anyway, beyond the entertainment options in store this fortnight, we hope this edition provides you with plenty of amusement, cheap laughs, some food for thought and maybe even food to eat—there’s tasty dip recipes page 18.

Rips, eh?

You can do all the exercise you want, but once the rip starts, let’s see how good you are. No amount of pushups, weights, rubbers or mountain biking will help.

There’s no rests, no commercial breaks and certainly no mercy. If it wasn’t for the surfers, West Beach would have the highest mortality rate of anywhere in Oz. A nasty little rip if there ever was one.

Everyone of the more mature type of surfer (grumpy, whining and in the way) has multiple stories of rescuing predominantly European swimmers. Not always though, there’s occasionally a homegrown one.

Rips keep people honest, too. Now that leg ropes have become an integral part of surfing, a lineup can get pretty congested. Enter the rip and exit the wannabe. In a lot of cases the rip enhances the shape of the wave. They can make getting out easier, but getting in a damn sight harder.

Let’s be honest, when was the last time you swam for your board? Let alone amongst a rip.

If you’re opting for a CC ‘Complete Correction’ product, it's probably because you want to be kind to your skin. With that in mind, ‘Pure Mineral Foundation’ is a powder designed by skincare company Ultraceuticals, which B Naturally You uses for their facials. The idea is that the product is so nice on your pores they can be applied to minimise redness on freshly facialed skin. It sits quite naturally and is therefore suitable for skin of all ages. There’s also a creamy hair treatment in the same range if your tresses are a little frazzled after summer.

If you’re into Chanel’s iconic ‘Rouge Allure’ lipstick, you need to check out its sister company Bourjois’ ‘Rouge Velvet’ lipstick. It’s a liquid matte formula, à la Kylie Jenner, but feels more velvety on the lips and won’t dry them out. How do you juggle your adventurous lifestyles with family, friends, relationships?

We’re from Cronulla, Sydney.

We all went to Wollongong Uni, before that we went to the same high school, but we’re different ages. We’ve been playing together for seven or eight years, so [it’s] pretty solid.

It’s tricky. You get better at it with age—you learn to better manage how long you can go away for without things falling apart. I’m so used to it now and so is my fiance.

Where did your band name come from?

It came from my last name, in a way. We used to go under the band name ‘Carra’ while the others were supporting me in a solo project, but as we started building up momentum we thought we needed to change the name, and it reflected our style.

How many times have you been to Esperance?

You do a lot of regional shows.

What’s can small towns do to draw bigger names?

A big thing going into this show is presale. You always know people will show up on the day, but there has to be a willingness to support early, or it doesn’t give much confidence to promoters or agents.

Especially Esperance being so far from Perth, it’s high risk.

I think we’ve been to Esperance about four times.

Cape Le Grand is one of our favourite spots. I think it’s part of the reason we come back, we love the town, but we really love the landscape as well.

What are you listening to at the moment?

Who’s the most interesting person you’ve met on the road?

The trombone, although we do sometimes play it.

One of the pretty crazy things is we’ve become quite good friends with The Prodigy management team. They discovered us at Arrifana [Sunset Fest] in Portugal. And we’ve played with Fat Freddy’s Drop, Madness, UB40.

The Growlers, they’re a Californian band.

What’s your favourite music instrument that doesn’t feature in your band?

Would you rather give up beer or coffee?

I’m speaking from experience here. I’d rather give up coffee—I feel like it’s worse for you than beer.

The brekky wrap up I love breakfast, and the breakfast wrap is a miracle of modern fast food because it gives you a full English breakfast on the go. It’s as if someone decided to make the plate edible so we could wrap the whole thing up and take it with us. The breakfast wrap is a beautiful thing, so I decided to compile this list of my favourites to spread the love of all things delicious and handheld.

My first port of call is Bay Of Isles. Starting at $6, their wraps offer incredible value. With a wide range to select from, I’ve settled on my two favourites. The first is the hollandaise and baby spinach, which I nicknamed the ‘Pocket Rocket’ because you could fit it in your pocket, although I wouldn’t recommend it. A perfect combination of bacon, egg, hashbrown, hollandaise sauce and baby spinach, it’s my go-to wrap because it’s the perfect size and the price means I can justify eating one daily. The ladies seem to make these handful of joys every day to the exact same proportions and for that I take my hat off to them.

For an extra dollar they will throw in some cheesy sausage, a wrap they call the ‘Cheesy Boss’. As I am my own boss and my sense of humour is indeed cheesy, this wrap resonates with my sense of self and so every now and then I indulge in its glory.

The BFW ‘Big F***ing Wrap ’ Lucky Roe is a classic spot. It’s the place you go when you feel like getting your munch on early in the morning before work, or after a night out that put holes in your stomach and needs some grease to fill the void. Every truck driver and tradie in town frequents this spot because it offers one thing: bang for your buck. At $8, prepare yourself for a marathon breakfast. With a huge Turkish pita roll, hollandaise sauce, an entire pig’s worth of bacon and a carton of eggs—you could probably feed your whole squad with this beast of a wrap. My face should be mounted on the wall for successfully eating the entire thing. I recommend you make sure you have time for a nap afterwards, or a tonne of work to do with no lunch break. This is definitely one for the hardcore breakfast wrap enthusiast.

Aurelia’s Ice Creamery & Cafe The ‘OMG, This Is So Good’ Aurelia’s wraps are indeed something special. They have by far the largest range of flavours to choose from. Get yourself a coffee and spend five minutes just deciding which wrap you would like, because they all look so freaking good. Beyond the basics, you can throw a sausage or rissole in the mix, or go all out with a pineapple and ham wrap. If you feel like getting your chargrill on, another great option is the mushroom and capsicum. At $9, this is a gourmet option but it’s extremely filling so you do get your money’s worth. The wrap itself is crusty and delicious and hits the spot on the days you feel like treating yourself to something special. Made with love, these wraps come highly recommended.

Sheldon Lunch Box The Picasso’ The team at the Lunch Box put a lot of care and effort into everything they do and the first thing that struck me when I took a bite of this wrap was how well it had been layered. Put it this way, if Shrek knew about this wrap he wouldn’t have compared ogres to an onion. The wrap itself seems to fold in on itself and run through the middle, with the layers of bacon, egg and hash brown forming a spiral pattern resembling some kind of psychedelic art piece. With each bite you get that little bit extra of everything. At $7.50, this hollandaise wrap is a winning combination of value and craftsmanship. Just try not to get hypnotised while you eat it.

Our relationship with food usually begins in childhood.

What we ate depended on many things—our culture, family income or simply if our parents were interested in cooking. In days gone by, most people sat down together to some kind of home-cooked meal. But today, with all our busyness, the family meal is waning and even though we are glued to television cooking shows, our appreciation of food is going backwards. Becoming more present when it comes to eating is actually an easy way to practise mindfulness. All you have to do is firstly, turn off your devices, place the meal (whatever it is) on a table (not your lap) and spend 30 seconds actually noticing what is on the plate. Notice the colours, shapes and arrangement of the food. Now breathe in the aroma of the meal. Carefully place a mouthful of the food into your mouth, close your eyes and very, very slowly chew while you notice its taste and texture. Swallow. Open your eyes.

Continue eating your meal in this slow deliberate way. Your busy mind and your digestion will thank you for it. Bon Appetit.

Realising stuff

You’re busy, you’re flustered, but it’s not like you couldn’t possibly bring yourself to take 120 seconds out of your day. It will seem ridiculously easy to begin with, perhaps too easy, but if you just commit to two minutes per day and gradually build up, you will start looking forward to the clarity that comes from that tiny time out. First thing in the morning will probably work best.

It’s not all about a blank mind, you are actually allowed to think. Some useful processes may involve counting your breaths or doing a mental body scan to assess your inner situation that day. Don’t ignore your feelings, especially the bad ones—acknowledge the emotions you may be feeling, but try to greet them with kindness and rationality. Meditation is all about getting to know your own mind. Be kind to yourself.

Reminder: you don’t need a kitted out yoga den or a latest season Lululemon outfit to meditate. Do it on the couch, your bed, sitting on the beach— don’t sweat the small stuff. You’re also going to worry you’re not doing it right, which is a thought process we all have sometimes. Don’t worry about that either, just be glad you’re actually taking the time to give it a go.

Remember the brain is allowed to wander, but try to recentre any awry thought processes with a smile and a return to focusing on your breathing. If it’s still not working out for you, you may wish to try out guided meditation—whether that’s of the pre-recorded type or through one of Esperance’s many yoga studios. Like anything, meditation is all about practise, and the only way is up.

Flowering Gums Spot a tree covered in red flowers and, chances are, it’s a red-flowering gum (Corymbia ficifolia).

Your next guess could be a Eucalyptus leucoxylon ‘rosea’, also a stunning tree that flowers profusely red or cream. Neither of these trees are native to Esperance but both grow well here. Better yet, they tend not to populate themselves and become invasive like a tuart or peppermint. Fuschia gum (Eucalyptus forrestiana) is a highly ornamental tree because of its bright red buds and yellow flower. It only occurs naturally northeast and northwest of Esperance in Mallee country and is a perfect street tree because it only grows to about 8 metres high. If you are into the more rugged, unkempt look, try the bell-fruited Mallee (Eucalyptus preissiana) and four-winged Mallee (Eucalyptus tetraptera). Both have impressive flowers and multi stems and the four-winged Mallee is famous for its massive leaves. Give these guys some room as they love to spread themselves about.

Always the dilemma, is whether to plant a more established seedling or a smaller seedling in a tube. There are pros and cons for both. A more mature seedling does give you a bigger tree from the start, but will cost more and there’s always a risk it could be root bound—thus, shallow rooted—and may topple over in a few years.

to be a little more patient to see some growth, but generally it will mature into a stronger tree.

My advice is if you do want a more advanced tree, make sure it’s in a pot that suits its size and is not root bound.

Either way, a beautiful flowering tree in your yard will not only attract attention from the neighbours but also provide food for the nectar-hungry wildlife.

she’s very good—but not quite as good as Allison Janney, who plays Harding’s mother LaVona. Janney is right at home playing the caricature of a hard-as-nails ‘dance mom’ who doesn’t concede to the US Figure Skating Association’s standards. The rest of the characters are largely unremarkable, due in equal parts to the competence of the actors, but also to a script with simplistic supporting character development.

I, Tonya Few members of a cinema audience would enter the room without some notion of who Tonya Harding was or what she did. It’s a movie based on the story that made international headlines in 1994 when Harding’s husband orchestrated a cruel attack on fellow US Olympian Nancy Kerrigan. So began a witch hunt, with little media interest in Tonya’s reality—from her backstory to the details of her fall from grace. Until now.

You won’t recognise Margot Robbie immersed in all things Harding—from the awkward teenage braces to the tragic late 80s hair and makeup. Robbie’s total commitment to her first Hollywood lead role demonstrates her determined pursuit of those elusive gutsier scripts. Her performance has earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress and

Ultimately, the performances and intriguing plot are let down by the editing—the movie’s trailer promises it to be as slick as Adam McKay’s The Big Short or Scorcese’ Wolf Of Wall Street, but doesn’t quite deliver. Ironically, the film was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Editing—hopefully, it will not be successful. By all means, it’s entertaining viewing—but perhaps not worthy of the Oscar contention it’s been awarded.

On Monday, March 12, see Sun Rising: The Songs That Made Memphis. Sun Records launched the careers of greats like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Howlin’ Wolf, BB King and many more. How easy is it to become overwhelmed?

Life happens at such a fast pace, we’re all guilty of taking on more than we can handle. I absolutely love what I do, though I regularly question whether I’m heading in the right direction. I write lists upon lists that are constantly revised and never reach a resolute end. Workload, without a doubt, drains my creativity. Some days I pick up the guitar and it feels as if I’ve forgotten what it’s all about. Time away is absolutely imperative—we all need to reset, to gain clear focus.

Last weekend, I managed to get away. Packing the car, I struggled with the lists I would leave

behind, the calls I would miss. Early into the camping trip, I was still finding it difficult to put my thoughts at ease—something forgotten and then remembered again calling on me to make a new mental note, a new mental list. Rain set in on Saturday and we found ourselves confined to the tent. I picked up my guitar for a bit of a strum, the D string snapping within the first ten minutes.

Frustrating, and no closer to writing some amazing masterpiece.

But over the weekend, I certainly found moments of calm and I guess that’s all I needed. I was able to move through a number of things that had been holding me in place, and returned with a fresh perspective. Maybe a new song is just around the corner, I just have to remember how to sing first.

PEPITA AND KALE GUACAMOLE

METHOD

INGREDIENTS 2 cups kale 2 tbsp lime juice 1 green onion (chopped) I cup coriander 1 avocado Salt & pepper 3/4 cup pepitas (toasted)

Baby cucumbers Olive oil 1 green chilli

1. Place kale in a bowl with bowling water, cover and set aside for 1 minute to soften.

2. Drain kale and combine with lime juice, green onion, coriander, avacado, salt, pepper and 1/2 cup of the pepitas in a food processor and pulse until smooth.

3. Heat oil in saucepan over medium heat, add the chilli and remaining pepitas and cook for 1-2 minutes or until slightly brown.

4. Place in serving bowl, top with chilli and pepitas mixture.

ROASTED CARROT & CASHEW

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

1 brown onion 6 carrots 3/4 cup cashews (toasted) 1/2 cup parmasan 1 bunch coriander Juice of 1/2 lemon

3 cloves garlic (chopped) Salt & pepper Olive oil Honey

1. Chop carrots and onion into halves, lay on a roasting tray and drizzle with olive oil, honey, salt and pepper.

2. Roast until soft and caramelized.

3. Finely dice cooked carrots and onions with cashews, coriander and garlic.

4. Mix with lemon juice, salt and pepper and any juice left in the roasting tray. Add extra olive oil if needed.

THE PERFECT DRY MARTINI As dry as a dead dingo’s donger.

METHOD 1. Fill a glass with ice.

INGREDIENTS 1 part dry Vermouth 2 parts vodka Dash of orange bitters Coupla Yirri Grove olives

2. Add vodka and dry Vermouth and orange bitters.

3. Stir for 20 seconds.

4. Strain into a classic cocktail glass.

5. Add an olive or two on a stick and drink with class.
