What do you mean it’s the end of April? School is out and it’s great to see the kids tearing up our town once more. With blissful weather, it’s like we’ve gone back to summer! Speaking of school kids, if you’re wondering about the unique strain of this fortnight’s Tide, there’s a Chappy’s Point that tells the story of one group of 1970s Californian high school students’ role in a movement that has spread across the world, trickling down underground to even our little old slice of paradise. Remember, Anzac Day is next Wednesday, so prep for an early start and remember to take a moment to consider how different this place would be had 76 young men, in a town of 350 people, not enlisted in the First World War. This fortnight is all about commemorating different generations of young people who all desired one thing: a more peaceful world. Happy daze!

Love, Simon Based on the novel Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli, Love, Simon is the first major studio film to ‘focus on a gay teenage romance’.

series of hilarious imaginary scenes where his best friends declare their heterosexuality to sobbing parents.

The story centres around Simon Spier (played by Nick Robinson), a closeted teenager whose ‘secret’ is revealed by the annoying blackmailer Martin (Logan Miller) who eventually outs him via a school gossip website.

Powerful is the scene where Martin tries to apologise to Simon and a stinging altercation ensues. Simon is furious with Martin, not because of any humiliation caused, but because of the liberty taken in not being able to come out on his own terms.

It has all the ingredients of a John Hughes-style loveable teenage blockbuster. There are love triangles, a hint of musical theatre, high school staff who offer comic relief, and a sturdy indie soundtrack to facilitate those feel-good moments between the gang of best friends, one of whom is played by teen dream Perth-native Katherine Langford, known for her lead role in the controversial Netflix series 13 Reasons Why.

Jennifer Garner and a matured Josh Duhamel star as Simon’s parents, and they are probably the weakest link, in terms of both storyline and acting ability.

It’s a family-friendly movie that will be loved by all—it’s a great one to take kids to, even if that’s just an excuse to see the YA delight. The film was deliberately designed to not be outwardly shocking or controversial, and that is what makes its impression so lasting. It’s a sigh of relief to see homosexuality accurately portrayed as totally normal.

The best parts of the film are carried by the lead actor, who laments, “It doesn’t seem fair that only gay people have to come out. Why is straight the default?”. Cue a

Board Shaper Pat McCarthy How long have you been shaping boards? How did you learn?

I’ve been shaping boards for 11 years. Denmark legend Warren Thompson offered to teach me to shape when I was 19. He was a father figure to me as a teenager. ‘Wazz’ has over 50 years of shaping experience around the world.

What do you enjoy about it?

I love creating things. It’s my happy place. It’s just you and a blank in a room and you are in a kind of ‘zone’ acting and reacting. I just feel lucky to be able to do it, having been shown the ropes. There is no formal apprenticeship for surfboard building.

And to feel part of a club of craftsmen who give a lot of their time to helping people have fun in the waves.

What’s the best board you’ve ever shaped?

You’d have to define best. I’d probably pick a puffed up 5’8” I did for myself that ticked all the boxes on the shape and glassing, and I really liked the artwork I did on the bottom and my daughter scribbled on the deck. And it goes good.

Who is your main market?

People looking for that personal touch. Emotional attachment to a custom board that was handshaped for you adds to the special experience.

Elite surfers probably want to be on ultralight Al Merricks and DHD’s, but most of the surfing population is out to have fun and feel the love.

That’s probably why we do lots of birthday boards and ‘thank you’ boards.

What’s your favourite part of the process?

Turning the rails is one of the best parts. It’s when all the curves come together and it looks like a real surfboard.

Who is your biggest influence?

Wazz was by far my biggest influence. He has craftsmanship coming out of his ears, he is just a model human. I look up to lots of shapers who still do the whole process of hand shaping and glassing. Guys like Clutch, Album, Corey Graham, Dick Van Straleen. Of the big brands, I like the shapes of Chilli, JS and Mayhem.

Who’s your favourite surfer?

Andy Irons RIP… Timeless.

How long have you lived in Esperance for?

What brought you to town?

We have been in Esperance since Christmas. We wanted to come to Esperance to get back to waves after two years in the Kimberley and play happy families with some of our friends.

What do you like about Esperance?

The beaches are next level, it’s super family friendly, the fishing is good, the community is proud of its town and it’s the last place a nuclear bomb will hit.

What surprised you about Esperance?

I was a bit surprised by the vibrant arts scene.

The Cannery does a great job and the community is really supportive of the effort made to put things on. Better than Denmark!

The War on Weeds KNOW YOUR ENEMY

Invasive weeds have the ability to have a major impact on our native plant communities. If we are to preserve our natural landscapes and native species, we have to fight a ‘War on Weeds’.

One of the main reasons we have weeds taking over our coastal dunes, waterways and bush is because of poor plant choices in our gardens.

Some classic garden escapees are Daisies, Dietes, Gazanias, Fountain grass, Pelargonium, Yacca, Lantana and Dandelions, to name a few.

These plants escape the confines of the garden and can become serious environmental weeds, posing a major threat to the health of our native environment. Other weeds that are invading the Esperance landscape are Flaxleaf fleabane, Victorian tea tree, Bridal creeper and the top three enemies to our local bush are Golden Wattle (Australia’s national flower, but don’t let that fool you), African boxthorn and Prickly pear.

So, what can you do? Firstly, making good planting choices will help limit the problem garden species. Keeping on top of weeds on your

property will stop the army of seeds spreading. If you can recognise the weeds when they are juvenile then you can halt the invasion.

If you are really keen to help the battle with weeds, join in the Esperance Weed Action Group ’s weeding days and you will not only learn more about the species we don’t want here, but also help control the spread of these deadly warriors.

With a repertoire of original music and a career spanning 15 years, Campbell’s visit is part of a new project called The Breakout Lights. Head down to Taylor Street for tunes starting at 7pm.

The audience are drawn in and gather round to sing the night away to a massive set list of singalong tunes, from John Denver to Rage Against the Machine. Sing the night away from 6pm, tickets $20.

The Anzac Day dawn service will be held at the Esperance RSL war memorial on the corner of Dempster and James Street. Marchers step off from Esperance Post Office at 5.50am before the service at 6am. A second service will be held at 11am, with marchers departing from Andrew Street carpark at 10.30am.

But the music industry has changed dramatically from those days, it has become fast-paced and relentless. More and more, the bands that rise to the top are those that not only play fantastic music but also understand the industry and are prepared to put in the hard work to make music work for them as a viable career option.

Speak to a wide variety of musicians and they will attest to the positive effect marijuana has had on their creativity and songwriting.

Many feel it helps with their creative process by lowering inhibitions and relaxing the mind, in turn allowing them to tread artistic ground less travelled.

Without a doubt, pot has had a large impact on the contemporary musical landscape. Bob Dylan introduced the Beatles to the plant and from there it became an important part of their creative process.

I have met many a brilliant musician whose potential to have a red-hot crack has been marred by overconsumption of one mindaltering substance or another. An ability to write amazing music will only get you so far in a landscape where thousands of bands are vying for the same gigs. Industry professionals redflag groups that have a reputation for misuse of drugs and alcohol, which may invariably affect a performance.

At the end of the day, the choice is yours, all I will say is that a focussed mind is a motivated mind is a successful mind.

CHOCOLATE BROWNIES

The Holy Grail

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

375g butter 2 cups caster sugar 1⅓ cups cocoa 4 eggs ½ tsp salt 1 cup flour 170g chocolate 60g cream cheese Icing sugar

1. Preheat oven to 165C and place a rack on the lower third of the oven.

2. Line a square baking tin with lightly greased baking paper.

3. In a saucepan, combine the butter and sugar over low heat, stirring frequently until the butter is fully melted to form a smooth syrup. Stir in the cocoa and remove from heat.

4. Place the mixture in a large bowl and stir in the cream cheese.

Add the eggs, one at a time, until fully combined, then stir in the flour and salt.

5. Add the chopped chocolate. Spread the mixture into the prepared pan.

6. Cook until a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out slightly moist, about 35-40 minutes—not 50 minutes, like I did because I was too busy listening to Michael Jackson.

7. Remove from tin as soon as you can and allow to cool on a rack.

Lightly dust the cooled brownies with icing sugar and serve with a dollop of your favourite ice-cream.

We invite you to send yours to hello@esperancetide.com This week, people everywhere celebrate April 20, also known as 4/20, the international day of marijuana celebration and protest against prohibition. All across the world, people will break state and federal laws enmass in defiance of what many consider an unnecessary set of laws. The movement has been so successful in the US that bills have been passed in many states allowing medicinal and even recreational use of the substance.

Most probably wonder why ‘420’? Apart from being a popular time of day to consume cannabis, the term 420 is a cultural phenomenon that began with a couple of friends meeting up at 4.20pm at a statue of French biologist Louis Pasteur to search for a long lost hidden cannabis crop, after acquiring a treasure map from the grower. The story was picked up by High Times and is now recognised as the beginning of the movement to legalise the plant.

It’s these humble beginnings that give the movement strength.

There are no great leaders, agendas or ideas at play—just a group of kids who remind us all of our rebellious nature and the innocence of their quest. Fast forward 50 years and those students, without even trying, have created a movement that has almost become mainstream.

People are becoming aware of the medicinal benefits the plant has to offer, from treating kids with epilepsy or providing pain relief for cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. While counterarguments claim the facts around the medicinal benefits are not concrete, until we break the restrictions that stop people from accessing, growing and researching the plant without risking persecution, we won’t ever know the full scope of medicinal use. In many states across the US, medicinal marijuana has become big industry, raising millions in taxes and providing job opportunities, benefits Australia risks missing out on.

So this 4/20, have a think about the groups and parties pushing for change and don’t be afraid to let your inner rebel out. If we don’t defy the status quo every once in a while, we lose our ability to think for ourselves and risk missing out on the benefits of an incredible resource.

This Is A Tribute: Beryl’s Eats If you were here before 2011, you would have a fond memory of the local institution that was Beryl’s Eats. For 45 years, the caravan parked in front of the Tanker Jetty on warm windless nights and served up the community’s supply of heavily chicken-salted chips, burgers, deep fried Mars Bars and milkshakes, closely watched by Sammy the Seal who prowled the jetty waters for fisherman’s scraps. When Beryls finally closed its window and was towed away forever, there was a great outpour of sadness for the end of an era that was sentimental in so many people’s hearts. We still miss you, Beryl.

Hemp

Ah, Cannabis sativa. The world’s most ancient fabric, notorious for its ‘gateway drug’ variety, has held a largely unfair rep since the early 20th century, hardly helped by hippies like me who abused it back in the ‘60s. But hate it or love it, the usefulness of hemp has so far managed to conquer all its adversaries, and that’s because not all its uses are sinister.

Loved by veteran health food junkies for decades, hemp seeds are my top pick for the next ‘superfood’ craze, if the significant rise in imports is anything to go by. Like many other superfoods, the world’s supply have otherwise mostly been consumed as bird and animal feed. This is because the seeds are high in protein, B vitamins and minerals like manganese, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, iron and dietary fibre. Sprinkle it in with your granola and away you go.

Cannabis has been around Australia as long as white people have—it literally arrived aboard the First Fleet, the seeds intended to grow materials for rope and sails. Hemp is an immensely durable fabric, with a texture similar to linen that softens over time. It’s a great buy when you’re looking at clothing, bedding and upholstery. Almost anything made of canvas is probably hemp—even the word ‘canvas’ itself derives from cannabis.

Medical use Excuse the medical terminology, but hemp is the only edible seed that contains ‘gammalinolenic acid’ which is eventually converted to a protective hormone prostaglandin that regulates the hormonal balance. A bit like evening primrose oil, it has long been believed that hemp seeds are helpful for the ladies dealing with PMS and are supportive of menopausal health. Meanwhile, hemp seed oil contains essential fatty acids, like your omega-3’s and 6’s, that have ample rumoured health benefits.

Crop it In the garden, hemp is called a ‘mop crop ’ because it helps clear impurities out of soil and water. So much so, it’s even being used to clean contaminants at the Chernobyl nuclear disaster site. Because of its dense foliage, high-planting density and height, planting hemp is also done to kill tough weeds by minimising the pool of weed seeds in the soil. This means you can avoid herbicides.

So there you have it, a gateway into the many wonderful and practical uses of hemp. Long may the hardy little devil live.

Communicating effectively I find it weird we have been given this amazing ability to speak, unlike any other creature on earth. That said, even though we have thousands of words, we are often so bad at actually getting our message across.

Every day, we find ourselves in situations where we have to communicate in order to have our needs met, from asking someone to pass the sugar to letting your boss know you felt unfairly treated. Our ability to communicate effectively impacts everything, and there are several types of communicators.

There is the all-in-boots-and-all kind of person. This is known as aggressive communication— it applies to the people with the ‘I win, you lose’ mentality. It’s not so good, other than for alienating everyone in your life.

At the other end of the scale is the passive communicator, or the liedown-and-walk-over-me type. Their communication style sounds a bit like, ‘you win, I lose’. This style comes bottled with your best resentment, which when cellared, can turn to vinegar!

In the middle of these two styles sits assertive communication, which involves clearly expressing what you think, how you feel and what you want. The underlying assumption is ‘we both matter, let’s try to work this out’.

Always remember to take a deep breath first, reject ego and redirect your mind towards a win-win situation.

A N Z A C DAY S P E C I A L In 1916, a young man named George Dickinson saved the life of a man who had fallen from the rocks while fishing at West Beach. George refused a monetary reward, and the man he saved gave his mother a gold medallion to recognise his bravery. That same year, George enlisted in the army, following in the footsteps of his older brother Herbert. George was reported missing in action a year later, and his mother wrote several heartbreaking letters to the authorities, pleading for information about her son.

Herbert was also reported MIA, but was found injured and eventually sent home. George’s body was never found. The Dickinson brothers were just two of the 76 men from Esperance who served during the First World War, a very high number for a town of about 350 people.

The three Dunn brothers—William, James and Francis—were also among the Esperance troops to serve. Their parents, Esperance pioneers Andrew and Mary Ann Dunn (who had 15 children!) settled here in the 1880s. It was James who built a camp oven on what is now known as Jim’s Oven Road, if you’ve ever wondered about the unusual name. He was discharged as permanently unfit for service soon after enlisting in 1916 due to illness. But not easily deterred, he enlisted again that same year, and was later killed in action in Belgium. Francis and William were both discharged, due to illness and injury.

Many people know of the Lewis brothers—all four boys enlisted, and three were killed in action. The remaining brother, James, returned from the war, but he never married and never had children. Less well known is the story of William Shortland, a larrikin who was known as ‘Bill the Goose’. Serving in the decorated 51st Battalion, he was known for his sense of humour, but after his discharge, William suffered ongoing mental health problems.

He died at the age of 48 in a mental hospital.

These are just a few of the many brave men who served, and of course, Esperance people have been involved in other conflicts over the years, such as the Second World War, and the Korean and Vietnam wars. Esperance man Leslie ‘Tom’ Starcevich received a Victoria Cross for bravery while serving in WW2. More recently, Esperance men Lee Stapley and Rory Grundy have served in Afghanistan and Iraq. We will forever be indebted to our Anzac troops. May their stories live on in our memories.
