Is it just me or is it not our favourite time of year again? Christmas break is just a hop, skip and a jump away, the water is becoming slightly more beara ble and the number of summer pursuits on my to-do list is growing faster than Santa disappears up the chimney on Christmas Eve. How about a trying something different this year? Take the family on a day trip to Woody Island (or even stay a couple of nights–it’s worth it!). Head down to Esperance Mini Golf for a twilight session of golf with ya mates. Treat yo’ self or treat yo’ loved one to a full body treatment at B Naturally You. Spend the day in the kitchen cooking Christmas goodies like our tide pudding on page 19.

I was pretty impressed when I heard local boys were entering this year’s ‘Sydney to Hobart’ yacht race. We spoke to one our the crew members to get the load down (page 20). Come Boxing Day, how about turning off the darn Netflix for once, and chuck the normal telly on for some live action in support of the guys from Anger Management.

Arriving at the Island is always a treat. The visitor’s centre is extremely sheltered with a large view of the sea at front. After an hour long bush walk in which we get to learn about the bits n bobs of the islands history, we pull up a chair at Black Jacks Bar, a beer is overdue. We order the local fish and chips, sit back and enjoy the island life for a few minutes longer before heading back to reality.

As we left the bay, we headed west along the coast past Lover's Cove and along the back of West Beach where we were lucky enough to not only spot a small crowd of surfers making the best of the day's waves and a pod of dolphins also. The view of this popular beach is precious, as it's not often we get to see it from the deck of Woody Island Cruise. The boat makes a turn as it starts to head south, straight out to sea and into the famous Recherche Archipelago (commonly known as the Bay of Isles).

Before heading straight to Woody, we venture past nearby hotspots Charley Island, Cull Island, Thomas Island and Gunton Island. Along the way, we are met with a beautiful white-bellied sea eagle soaring high above our boat, hanging out for a piece a fish our tour guide has waiting for him.

After returning from our March trip to Woody Island, we were pretty keen to head back. The Woody Island Eco Tours half-day cruise was next on our list–the most ideal way to explore and learn about the island as well as the islands nearby. Woody Island is one of 105 islands in the Recherche Archipelago and is the only island open to visitors for day trips and camping.

Tuesday to Sunday, wife and business partner Darliah tweaks the menu and special board to the local catch of the day, for every second vegan to seafood lover, there’s something for everyone. A slice of Esperance, with or without scales. Professionals in the industry, Craig’s wait staff and cooks work in harmony alongside each other to deliver the best service to anyone who chooses to dine-in or takeaway.

The Tide team asked Craig and his team a few questions to get an insight into the level of work that goes into every meal, every time, Fish Face’s work ethics and furthermore what keeps people coming back over and over again. Here’s what the experts had to say.

What are some of your morals and work ethics, and do they mirror the quality of food and service at Fish Face?

My personal morals and work ethics reflect my professional career and business work practice. Such a deeply personal and complex question by to abbreviate, I would say is 'being fair and honest' to yourself and others underpin what we do. I push myself and staff to offer consistency and a quality I would eat and expect at that price and point. When we first traded and were looking for our business model there was only a handful offering 'Australian only' seafood. We were going out on a limb as most associate 'fish and chips' shops (not my label!) as a cheap dinner. If I buy it and think it will send, I’ll give it a go.

Craig, how long have you been in the food industry for?

I have been in the industry for 34 years, beginning my apprenticeship in 1983 and have been an owner/operator for 13 years.

Is there something a bout living by the ocean that compliments your career?

I have lived by the ocean all my life, diving and fishing with family and friends. As an ocean lover, I'm a keen advocate for sustainability in how much we take from the ocean and how we use it! It's integral to my peace of mind and sanity and gives me strength.

Working the tail end of the day, do you leave yourself plenty of time to prep?

At times I’ll be working until 1am although we tend to prep earlier in the day. Sometimes 10-11am but usually 122pm, trying to keep the food simple and fresh.

Working in a fast-paced environment, what are the tactics you teach your cooks and wait staff to handle the buzzing atmosphere? 'Go hard or go home…'?

To survive at our restaurant and in most kitchens/ restaurants, you need to be able to handle pressure, so speed and composure are traits we look for as is being able to multitask. I like your 'Go hard or go home'–I think I'll bank that!

I don’t see us as innovators but push for flavour driven.

Combinations that offer something different that gives choice. I think we at Fish Face as a team can hold our heads high. Not boastfully but respectfully.

Lastly, what’s your favourite fish to eat?

Deep sea Hāpuku, which is not usually caught locally. And a close second would be deep sea Leather-Jacket (known as Butterfish on our menu).

silly season survival Coming off the backend of December is like finishing a good television series binge.

Inevitably, we have to throw ourselves back into reality sooner or later. Like walking outside into the hot afternoon summer sun, at the end of the day we’re thrown back into certain commitments we palmed off at the beginning of the month. A showcase of both the good perks and bad decisions that are made around Christmas and New Years: goal setting becomes a priority and over the course of the last few remaining weeks of the year, we throw ourselves into the idea of pleasing, feeding everyone and gifting. Somehow leaving ourselves with enough room at the end of the day to follow through with a resolution. Now I’m not trying to put a downer on the festive season, it’s a wonderful chance for reuniting with friends and family, take to a well deserved holiday and get in touch with ourselves again. I'm just saying there's an easier way to survive the nasty stuff inbetween and this is how it's done.

December is a wonderful time of the year. It’s the beginning of summer, the festive season, school holidays, and it’s topped off by New Year celebrations.

Why does it sometimes feel so exhausting? December can feel like a marathon that just has to be survived, rather than enjoyed. In this season of kindness and generosity towards others, sometimes we forget to be kind to ourselves. Does it have to be that way?

Here are a few tips to help you make the most of this festive season and thrive, rather than just surviving.

Invest in the essentials and little else. Make sure you eat the cookies that your kids put out for Santa and leave behind some boot prints near the chimney. Pay for the coffee of the person behind you in the queue at the coffee shop. Send a heartfelt message to a friend or relative that you haven’t seen for a while. Be kind and generous and thoughtful, and you’ll be doing your small part to keep the beauty and wonder of this crazy season alive.

Be a no-man instead a yes-man (for a bit). Don’t feel like you have to go to every single Christmas party, work do, and end of year wind up. There are only so many hours in the day, and especially at this time of year, there are dozens of events all pushing for our time and attention. If it is going to be more pressure than pleasure, then opt out. Don’t even worry about making up an excuse. A simple “I’m sorry, but I won’t be there,” will be enough for all but the noisiest of invitation givers.

Enjoy the beauty of the season. The first glorious swim of the summer, watching children’s eyes light up as Santa goes past in the Christmas pageant, singing silly carols, making festive treats to share with the neighbours, checking out the Christmas lights - these are all beautiful parts of the season that can get lost in the hustle and bustle. As Kafka said, ‘Anyone who keeps the ability to see beauty never grows old.’

Make a vow of silence or equivalent. Sometimes the pressure of Christmas brings out the worst in people.

Rather than put up with passive aggressive friends or unpleasant relatives, give yourself permission to take a break. That might mean heading out for a walk or going camping for a few days. Either way, give toxic people some breathing room. It will be good for both you and them.

‘Dear Santa, I deserve…’. And by that I mean look after your own needs. Don’t put off going to the doctor, dentist, hairdresser, counsellor, or beautician just because it’s the silly season. And certainly don’t put off yoga class, drinking mojitos with your friends while listening to live music, or relaxing in a hammock in the backyard with a good book. If you’re rested and rejuvenated, you’ll have much more to give to those around you.

Stay true to your values. Christmas can push us into a consumerist frenzy, making us feel like we have to buy the latest gadgets and gizmos to impress our friends and family. But it doesn’t have to be like that.

You can still buy local, keep waste and single-use plastic to a minimum, and give thoughtful genuine gifts. It’s not about the amount of money you spend.

What’s more important is that you give things you care about and believe in. That might mean supporting local arts and crafts, making homemade gifts, or giving to a charity in lieu of buying gifts for some people.

Don’t forget your greens. It’s certainly the season for indulgence, but you can still add in some delicious healthy treats amongst the Chrissy ham and pavlova.

How about a festive red and green fruit salad made with strawberries and kiwi fruit? Or plenty of big, fresh, summery salads. A green smoothie is a good pick-me-up for those days when you are feeling drained. And how can you go past eating giant slices of watermelon at the beach? Enjoy the healthy stuff when you can, and when you can’t, don’t sweat it! It’s all about balance, and that means enjoying both the indulgent treats and the healthy delights.

Anticipation is upon us with longer days and warmer water over summer. And then there’s the autumn period to follow–which is considered the best time of year down in southern parts of Australia (and for surf in general).

Currently, the sandbanks around town are starting to show promise and its great to see some fun waves.

One older local described the last twelve months as “the worst surf season ever in Esperance”, though he said that last year. Anyway, our fingers are crossed.

This summer will probably be the biggest influx of travellers and an unprecedented increase in the lineup of surfers around town grovelling for waves.

Set to be about as popular as our Shire councillors and CEO, with similar little acts of localism set to reign. Sneakiness, self promotion and deviant actions may follow like dried dog faeces at West Beach trapping the windblown sand.

Paddling inside, dropping in, blocking and surfboard malfunctions, to name a few. The West Beach carpark will overflow with the toilet block and shower set to become a shanty town as will most the car parks around our coastal fringe. It’s a worldwide phenomenon that’s not set to change any year soon. The baby boomers will shout mouthfuls of obscenities, Gen X will curse under their breaths.

Gen Y will be busy trying to be lazy images of the past while Gen Z is belittled by the others as they find their voice to deal with what’s ahead. (Keep striking–with the way it’s going the dole queue will be the least of your worries ).

Unlike other Mistletoes, it grows from the ground and has seeds that are wind dispersed. In their natural setting, the Nuytsia Florabunda is as tough as old boots. It is quite adaptable growing in a range of soil types and conditions and is often the last man standing after a bushfire, but under its gangster exterior, it is a vulnerable plant which is coming under threat from stock and humans as it, unfortunately, doesn’t regenerate easily and almost impossible to propagate.

After a few years of pondering where to locate it, we finally built a staff lunchroom at the sheds with a toilet and shower. Thank you for the help from town tradies, we are looking forward to putting it to use and hosting Monday morning meetings there instead of our kitchen table at seven.

This tree is very significant to the Noongar people.

Around Perth, it was considered sacred, a being in which the spirits of the newly dead resided. Elsewhere in the south-west, it was valued for edible roots and for edible gum oozing from the trunk.

It is all hands on deck. Harvest is here, the crops are turning golden by the day. Staff are rolling up to fulfil their duties for the next couple of months, familiarisation of farm maps, the English language and the roads to town, shops in Esperance and to remember to drive on the left side of the road. A day of inductions was held, showing staff the ins and outs, safety and maintenance of the headers, chaser bins, augurs and fire trucks.

This is the time of year when the bush turns on in its own Christmas lights in the form of our beautiful local Nuytsia florabunda or the Western Australia Christmas tree as it brightens the paddocks and roadsides with its intense yellow/orange flowers. This unusual tree belongs to the Mistletoe family and has no relatives, only one class in its genus. It loves to take nutrients and water from surrounding plants making it partially parasitic like an only child helping itself to its own Christmas presents. This Christmas tree is believed to be the largest parasite in the world, thriving off any plant that comes within a hundred metres of it.

Sometimes they even cause power failures when they mistakenly wrap the blades of their roots around cables.

I’m rarely not thinking about music, it’s golden to live in that area where work blends with a passionate pursuit. As much as I love writing and performing, I absolutely love programming and coordinating events. Programming itself is especially rewarding, and almost a bit of a science at the end of the day. Selecting successful event line-ups requires a good understanding of the local music scene, a scene that is constantly in flux. I’d like to think that the knowledge I have learned through experience locally is reflected on a larger scale with similar variables considered when selecting for festivals such as Falls Festival, or Groovin The Moo. It’s interesting to think back to the large festivals of old that I grew up attending in Perth, Big Day Out key amongst these. Programmers of Big Day Out seemed quite haphazard in their selection criteria, seemingly working off which international bands had toured recently or no. With such a large line-up and a monopoly over the festival scene at that particular time, their target demographic was likely people between 18-45 who liked music, fairly vast. Boutique festivals have well and truly filled this gap now, line-ups becoming smaller, and more attention being paid to developing a well-rounded event experience suited to a specific target audience. For the moment this outlook seems stable though it’s interesting to wonder whether a festival the likes of Big Day Out will ever resurface in Perth.

The Esperance Motor Hotel is synonymous with live music in our small town. I have many fond memories of the Motor from my first solo performance 9 years ago, to catching Birds of Tokyo there in 2010. A great stage setup and

standard Aussie bar vibe lend themselves to rowdy nights rocking out on the dance floor. Currently, Trevor Burleigh and his team have done a cracking job in consistently running live music Saturday nights, with Diesel kicking along the traditional karaoke Fridays. It has been a pleasure working with the crew at The Esperance, and I’m prepping up for another golden evening. Who doesn’t love the classic op shop party? Particularly one with an absolute ball-buster of a local line-up. Head to the Esperance Motor Hotel Saturday, December 8 from 7.30pm to catch an all-star cast featuring, Josh Thomas, Atmos, Ta$ty, Stewy, Roobs and the Washing Line Economy and Grand Casual to round the night out. From hip-hop to chill vibes and hearty rocking blues, there’s a little something to appeal to all tastes. And as it’s an op shop party there must be a prize for the best attire. I’m giving away one Kyza Presents Golden Ticket (allowing access to KP events for a year from December 8 for one individual) to the most creatively dressed on the night, to be judged by the man himself, Sean Lindsay from Triple M. Doors open at 7.30pm with tunes kicking off from 8pm. Entry is $10 on the door and the event is strictly 18+. Head along and support your locals.

Our beloved Christmas Pageant is back to brighten our streets. Head down to the town centre to witness another memorable parade. Starting at 3.30pm, make sure to stick around after for Carols By Candlelight presented by the Lions Club of Esperance at the Sound Shell from 6-8pm. Bring your blanket and sing along to your favourite Christmas carols.

Cannery Arts Centre presents Flotsam and Jetsam Exhibition opening at 7pm. The bar will be open and refreshments will be available. The documentary film ‘BLUE’ will be screening in the art room from 7pm.

Local artists Joe Franzone, Mel & Michael, Bec Schutz & Kyza will be providing live entertainment in the courtyard from 7.30pm.

Moving Movies at the Soundshell kicks off this year with the movie ‘Santa Clause’, gates open at 6.30pm. All you need to bring is your fam and a picnic rug–there will be plenty of food and drinks available to purchase.

woody island: former years

Woody Island has a special place in the hearts of Esperance locals. Many of us have happy memories of warm, lazy days camping, exploring the wild island’s trails, swimming, snorkelling in a peaceful bay filled with beautiful sea life, and sliding down the slide with the three-metre fall into the cold, clear water. This iconic destination has been many things throughout its history, from a prison camp to grazing land for sheep, and even the set of a thriller entitled Woody Island which was released in 2010.

Woody Island is the seventh largest island in the Recherche Archipelago, home to a rich variety of wildlife, including several types of geckos and skinks, at least 22 species of birds, including penguins, the Sacred Kingfisher, and the Golden Whistler. Woody is also home to the rare Ashy Grey native mouse, and a few Western Grey Kangaroos, which were introduced to the island. The island was named for the areas of tall trees, unusual among the islands of the archipelago.

An estimated 7,000 to 14,000 years ago, Woody Island was still connected to the mainland. Artefacts have been found on Woody Island and surrounding islands showing that they were used by the local Aboriginal people before being cut off by the rising seas. The slow pace of the rising sea levels and the plentiful food and water available on the mainland would have meant that the lifestyles of the First Peoples of the area were not too disrupted by these changes.

The first European settlers to the Esperance area, including the Dempster Brothers, used Woody Island to graze sheep and to collect firewood. The first sheep that were grazed on the Island began dying unexpectedly, and the culprit was eventually found – a poisonous native shrub commonly known as ‘heartleaved poison’. For a while, the sheep were removed, and the Dempsters trialled keeping pigs on Woody.

When the pigs were rounded up, at least one of them avoided capture. The huge pig ran wild on the island, occasionally killing sheep until it was finally hunted and shot. The Dempsters fenced off the section of the island where the poisonous shrub occurs, with the remnants of the fence still remaining on the island until recently. A small ship (a ‘ketch’) called the Ettie Black was wrecked transporting wood and sheep from Woody Island in 1896, with the skipper losing his life in the incident.

F IVE M I NU TE H I S TORY Woody Island was also notorious for being used as a ‘prison camp’ by the Dempster brothers. When the local Aboriginal people broke curfew or otherwise ‘caused trouble’ in the early Esperance settlement, they were taken to the islands for a period of punishment. The women were left on Woody Island, in very harsh conditions, and the men were taken to nearby Black Island.

Don Mackenzie passed away in 2012.

After the initial hostility faced in Esperance, the family became well loved in the Esperance community, with Don being remembered as Esperance’s ‘man of the sea’. Around this time, Mackenzie Marine stopped running the operations on Woody Island, in order to focus on their expanding business. Esperance Diving and Fishing ran tours and camping on the Island for a few years from 2011, after which tourist operations on the island ceased, with some of the facilities falling into disrepair. Unfortunately, Mac’s Jetty, along with the slide in the middle of the bay, both had to be dismantled as they had become dangerous. In 2017, Woody Island Eco Tours, run

by Esperance businessmen Peter May and Les Andrews, took over the lease on the island, refurbishing the buildings and camping facilities.

Tourists and locals who came to the island years ago can now bring their children to enjoy camping on the pristine Island again, having a drink at the newly opened Blackjack’s Bar, hiking the scenic trails, fishing, and swimming in the clear waters of the Shearwater Bay.

In the 1980s, the Esperance Shire initiated moves to develop Woody Island for further tourism. Don Mackenzie, with his family business Mackenzie Marine, applied for the lease and secured the chance to continue developing the island for tourism. The Mackenzies built a new jetty, in the middle of the sheltered Shearwater Bay, as well as other amenities on the island, including a visitor’s centre with a stunning view of the bay. The first tourists to stay overnight on the Island began to arrive in the summer of 1984. Mackenzie Marine built a glass bottom boat called Miss Woody,

which was used for tours of the bay. In what Fud Mackenzie refers to as the ‘golden years’ of Woody Island from 1995 to 2005, as many as 16,000 people were visiting the island every year.

In 1948, a young man named Don Mackenzie moved to Esperance.

He started fishing commercially, with great success, and he often recounted the story of Esperance locals calling a public meeting to have him thrown out of town because they believed he was depleting local fish reserves. The Fisheries department intervened and banned Don from fishing during daylight hours, which suited him as he fished at night anyway. In 1950, Don got an opportunity to be involved in the Australian Geographical Society’s survey of the Recherche Archipelago. He skippered his own boat for the survey and got a rare chance to visit all of the islands in the Archipelago. Don also took every opportunity to expand his operations, including taking passengers on fishing charters and tours of the islands. For a while, Don was involved with grazing sheep on Woody Island, until the Island became a class A Nature Reserve as part of the Recherche Archipelago Nature Reserve in 1954.

In 1972, Don and his sons, Hugh and Fud, applied to the WA Department of Fisheries and Wildlife for permission to land passengers on Woody Island. He was granted permission, with some strict conditions, which included that stays on the island were not to exceed 8 hours. They started building ‘Mac’s Jetty’, a landing that ran along the granite headland. Don described building the jetty as one of the hardest projects he’d ever been involved in. Logs had to be dragged up the hill using a pulley system and the Mackenzies’ boat, and holes had to be bored into solid rock. Building the jetty took nearly four years to complete. The first visitors to the island began to arrive in 1974, and the Mackenzies began to make walk trails and other infrastructure on the island.

Method 1. Use a mandolin or very thinly slice the red cabbage and fennel bulbs, reserving the fronds of the fennel.

2. Remove the orange skins. Squeeze the juice from skins into a bowl and set aside for the dressing.

Slice the oranges thinly horizontally. Slice the avocados.

3. Combine dressing ingredients and whisk to combine. Taste and adjust seasoning accordingly as your dressing balance will depend on the sweetness of your oranges. You want to have a sharp, sweet dressing so you might need to add a bit more vinegar or sugar.

4. Toss the fennel and cabbage in the dressing, reserving a little dressing.

5. Arrange the cabbage, fennel, orange and avocado on a platter and gently toss.

6. Plate with sprigs of fennel fronds on the top, drizzle with the remaining dressing and finish with a grind of black pepper and salt.

local sailing team’s race to hobart The Sydney to Hobart is one of the world’s most prestigious yacht races. It is also widely considered to be one of the most difficult yacht races in the world. First held in 1945, the race runs for 1,170 kilometres between Sydney and Hobart, and last year, it attracted 102 competing crews. The first vessel to win the race in 1945 was the Rani, and it took over six days to complete the journey. The current record for ‘line honours’ was set in 2017 by LDV Comanche of 1 day, 9 hours and 15 minutes. The famous Wild Oats XI actually crossed the line ahead of the LDV Comanche but was given a 1-hour penalty, thus losing to the LDV Comanche. Wild Oats XI has won line honours on a record seven separate occasions.

This year, a crew from Esperance will be taking place in the race, one of only two Western Australian teams competing. This is not the first time an Esperance based team has competed. Esperance local Tim Ratten raced the 39-foot yacht Pilgrim in the Sydney to Hobart several times in the late 70s and early 80s. Ratten owned the Pilgrim right up to 1989 when the yacht was purchased by renowned sailor Jon Sanders and was renamed the Perie Banou III. Sanders, originally from Perth, set numerous records, including being the first person to circumnavigate Antarctica solo, and the first single-handed sailor to remain continually at sea for two circumnavigations of the world. This year, Esperance local Matt Shillington will also be racing on the Wild Oats XI, providing a bit of local competition.

The crew consists of Tim Stewart, who is the owner and skipper of the boat, Russell Bridge, Stuart McIntyre, Colin Maloney, Dylan Pinchin, Chris Ratcliffe, Robby Johnson and myself, who are all Esperance locals, as well as Geoff Bishop and Mark Wheeler who are pros from Perth. The Esperance guys have all sailed together all our lives, so we’ve got a really strong bond. Most of us have been sailing since we were kids, and so we’ve known each other for twenty to thirty years, and have been sailing together for that long.

And can you tel l me a bout the yacht?

It’s a Salona 44 foot yacht called Anger Management. Tim’s had it for about 2 years.

How did you get the boat over to Sydney?

How are you going to celebrate when you finish the race?

The race works as a handicap event depending on the size of the boat. There are a number of different divisions and we qualify for most of them. The beauty of that is that is that even the smallest boat can win. So the boat that sails to the best of its ability will win rather than just the biggest boat.

The race is 628 nautical miles, so we expect to do it in four days, depending on weather conditions. The bigger boats will do it in less time, of course.

How long wil l it take you?

I’m going to have a hot shower and a big drink and a good night sleep. None of us will be drinking during the race, and we probably won’t sleep much. We’ll have a few nights in Hobart, probably New Years in Hobart, and then we’ll be heading home.

Many, many years of sailing! For the race, we’ve also had to study tides, charts, and weather conditions of the area. We’ve had to do a little bit of fitness work. The other main preparation has been a lot of money and time preparing the boat and preparing ourselves safety-wise, in order to meet the category 1 safety standards of the race.

How do you prepare for an event like this?

Yes, it’s dangerous, but there are always other boats and rescue services all around you. We’re used to rough conditions down here. We sail from here to Albany and down south, and we’ve got no one around, so in that respect, it is safer. There are also a lot of safety requirements for the race.

You have to have a first aid officer and two people on the boat who’ve done their first aid. There’s a hell of a lot that you have to learn to compete. You have to be careful, but it’s still a race, you’ve got to sail to the conditions and push the boat as hard as you can without breaking anything.

An Albany guy called Mark McCray sailed to Sydney for us, so it’s over there ready and waiting for us.

This year is the twenty year anniversary of the worst disaster of the race when five boats sank and six people died. Are you worried a bout the danger?

We all know Esperance is an amazing place to spend your summer. Summer in Esperance means spending any spare second at the beach escaping that hot sun. Whether it be swimming in the beautiful crystal clear water or wandering along the silky white sands, we all find our escape at the beach. But, we also know that the beaches can become very crowded and popular during this time too. Our favourite, ‘secret spots’ also become everyone else’s favourite ‘secret spots.’ But don’t worry, here is a guide to most overlooked spots to visit and explore in Esperance during the warmer months.

Don’t fret, if strenuous bush walks aren’t for you, but you still want to visit beaches around the Cape Le Grand region, give the Thistle Cove to Lucky Bay walk a try. This walk only takes about 1 hour for one way and is more of your typical stroll. In summer this trail should be magical, especially around golden hour.

Once again, the trail goes over some beautiful rock forms that overlook the ocean. Thistle Cove is a small beach and feels very secluded, so what more could you want on a hot summer's day if Lucky Bay is too crowded? A beach all to yourself.

Lake Warden, the 'pink lake' us locals don’t want anyone to know about. Lake Warden is a salt lake and part of the protected nature reserve, and unlike Esperance's town central Pink Lake, this lake is actually pink. Warden started to first turn pink in 2013, yet it is still unknown by so many of us. Why not see for yourself and give lake Warden a visit this summer for something different?

Lovers Cove is located at the very bottom of Wireless Hill, near the lookout. It's only accessible by hiking trail but is totally worth it. Just like Thistle Cover, Lovers is quite small so when you have this tiny beach to yourself, it feels like you are in your own little world. A top summer spot to set up a towel, picnic and relax with your family, friends or even a lover if you're lucky.

I’m not going to lie, this walk is a trek and takes about 3 hours for just one way. But honestly, it is so worth it. The scenery is truly breathtaking and you get to see a different side of Esperance that some people may never experience. The walk is about 15 kilometres in total and is classed under the 'difficult' category. So, just a fair warning before you think to go on a nice, light, leisurely stroll with your friends on a Sunday afternoon–it is tough, maybe plan for a day trip. But, don’t let this stop you, if you want to do something different this summer, try out the Hellfire to Thistle Cove walk, it goes through bush, over huge rock formations and onto the beach, so you’re never short of something to look at. Perhaps the field where the wild roses grow, weeds and dieback included. Our sense of ‘place’ doesn’t come from the squeaky sand or the common cunning Lucky Bay kangaroo. There’s a reason why we feel grounded to the land we walk on here and familiar salt air we realise exists only when we’re driving inland away from it. Just like the uncanniness that is life, I enjoy Esperance for its fair share of good and bad. Without one we lack the full appreciation of the other. It’s also why for the first time in a while I’ve formed a sixth sense and levelheaded-ness for the term ‘home’. Despite our reputation, every second person still complains about the weather but people from all corners of the globe are drawn

to our town like a duck to water. I still stick out like a tit on a bull but every third person who recognises me and waves from the street are ‘family’. It’s settling in, home is wherever the heart is.

Admittedly we’ve all been back and forth, to and from this place. If it makes you feel better, I’ve moved back to Esperance four times and heavily lack what it means to be local here. That’s why this year I have decided to pull my head out of the sand and improve my sense of ‘place’ as my end of year sick sad resolution. Resolutions aren’t there for the faint-hearted.

The external clutter. A reflection. Invest in your future self and prepare by living and being uncomfortable without the pacifiers you put in the way of your sick sad resolutions.

I found a serene place, a place to myself, a place which I can retreat to, to a final place of peace. This place can be anywhere for anyone, sometimes the silence can be unbearable so for the time being it just happens to be in the back corner of Downtown with my laptop, coffee and headphones.

Living more intentionally out of necessity with a keep cup and free wifi. I don’t automatically need a silent retreat (most times) each time I lose my marbles. For a while now I’ve found solace in white noise and a lot of people would probably agree how easier it can be to concentrate on any given task with rain on a tin roof or weirdly, a coffee machine and banter in the background. In this little hub, whether people choose to interrupt my personal bubble or not is not much of an issue. Without these some few distractions, this perfectly naturally lit place would be my comfort zone. I’d fall asleep at this table. It’s not and I’ve accomplished so much that goes hand in hand with my values in this one little corner (2mins stroll

Once you master the sense of place, you could be moving 100 metres down the road or jumping on a plane to the other side of the world, for whatever reason, the distance between here and then makes very little impact on your underlying sense of ‘self’. People exercise a lot of caution and kill too many brain cells finding their ‘comfort zone’. In an ideal world, our comfort zone is on a yacht in the Bahamas or pickled in alcohol amongst friends but really it’s one of those green-screens you see on a film set we set up at the rear of any given goal to disguise the hills we have to climb to achieve anything at the end of the day.

We use our ‘comfort zone’ as an excuse to put off what we have been longing to conquer for ages, here and now. It’s the perfect backdrop to a materialised future instead of a sight for sore eyes: the experiences our lives are made up of, truth be told. You don’t need a vacay or a perfectly executed array of things to get your jobs done. If we were smart we’d run away from that idea.

Esperance is a slice of the simple life and sometimes oblivious to the outside world. There’s nothing wrong with this, we can only have so much on our plate at a time. But sometimes we’re fed information too late.

This is simply because we don’t have the resources and platforms to inform us of important information, nor do we have the willingness to shine a bit of light on each other about things as soon as they happen (sometimes). We can multitask and admittedly a lot of us flourish from our easy-living lifestyles instead of the constant demands and commitments that come from living within a concrete jungle. As we’ve cut out the white noise and visual bullshit that comes from habiting any given city, we may also be cutting out the big picture: what’s really going on beyond our back fence line.

What we’re taught, told and share down here, some would prefer to know is small doses. I’ve come to notice there’s only a select few of us who really know what’s going on in the world. Before today, I wasn’t one of them. This is not by choice. Whether we own a tv or not (I don’t), it’s all about the conversations we have amongst friends and family that really keep us in the loop. We pluck up banter to do with our environment, day-to-day dilemmas and everything not to do instead of what to do.

When we enter the conversation for the first time about big news or current affairs, it can be very ‘be all or end all’. It’s about listening instead of select hearing. Stop and drop what your doing, Our community has a once in a generation opportunity to control its own power generation. It’s as big of a deal as it sounds.

The group also identified local constraints such as increasing power costs, the restrictions placed on rooftop solar installations for residents and the lack of utilisation of potential wind capacity due to the politics and structure of the industry, and current power supply contracts.

“The community-owned Hybrid Power Model proposes to supply power to Horizon Power under a new PPA from 2022, delivering a transparent and reliable new power generation network; reducing the community’s exposure to future gas and carbon price increases,” ECPP public relations officer Paul Griffiths said. A two-year scoping study of the district’s energy supply issues brought about the formation of the Esperance Community Power Project. It is a not for profit association with a committee of local residents, tasked with raising community awareness of this exciting opportunity to deliver a more reliable, renewable, costeffective power supply.

The consulting group engaged to conduct the study, identified wind power as the district’s best energy resource with solar the next most cost-effective solution. Note: people have only ever complained about the sound of a wind turbine standing directly underneath it, and even if they were an eyesore, we spend enough time in awe of our beachline across the road to complain much more about simple effective design. Not much more was hastily said about a few odd looking roof panels either.

The key change from the existing arrangement is that the Hybrid Power Generation model has the capability to operate with up to 100 per cent renewable energy penetration during maximum wind and solar phases.

This would project an average renewable energy penetration of up to 85% per cent from stage one of the project. The model could utilise excess renewable energy in the future, providing low-cost power for new industries that could be attracted to the district and create job opportunities locally. Opportunities for all.

“This will create an opportunity for Esperance Community Power to engage with current energy suppliers, government regulators and the retailer to establish a locally owned, renewable long-term power supply to the district’s island grid,” he informed us.

A power plant design team was engaged to design a Hybrid Power Generation model suitable for the district’s load profile. Utilising the natural energy resources available, the model delivers high wind and solar penetration with some battery storage included and has a backup capacity of either low-load diesel or low-load gas-powered generators. It’s far from ugly.

Recently, our town has been awash with intrigue, scandal, romance, danger, and glamour. An internationally acclaimed cast and crew have been based in Esperance, filming Tim Winton’s Miles Franklin award-winning novel Dirt Music. The last few weeks in Esperance have been a whirlwind of action in locations such as Twilight Beach, the Gibson Soak Hotel, Bandy Creek Boat Harbour, and the Wylie Bay dunes.

When I heard that Dirt Music was going to be filmed in Esperance, I was beyond excited. This book has consistently topped my ‘all time favourites’ list since I first read it, many years ago. Not only was the movie going to showcase my hometown, it was also going to feature big-name stars such as Emmy Award-winning Kelly McDonald, whose resume includes films such as Trainspotting, and No Country for Old Men. McDonald is just one of an all-star cast that includes Garrett Hedlund, David Wenham, and Aaron Pederson, as well as the musical talents of Julia Stone. Dirt Music is being directed by Gregor Jordan, with credits such as Two Hands and Buffalo Soldiers in his resume, and a crew of producers that have a raft of award wins and nominations between them.

With filming on the movie now wrapped, and production underway, there will be quite a wait until we can see the finished movie, with the release date not yet announced. I will be among the Esperance locals who can’t wait to see the resulting showcase of our beautiful town and state. We here in Esperance have always known how special this place is, and now the world will get to experience the wild and beautiful coastline of our spectacular home.

There were 65 local extras for the scenes filmed in the Gibson Soak. As well as that, locals played deckhands and were extras for scenes filmed at Bandy Creek Boat Harbour. 15 locals were taken on as interns in areas like camera and

art departments. The film crew also made use of local Jaimen Hudson’s expertise in shooting drone footage and some behind the scenes footage. More action scenes involving a car chase were filmed on Telegraph road, and scenes from the house where Georgie (played by Kelly Macdonald) and Jim (played by David Wenham) live overlook stunning Blue Haven.

Additionally, students from local schools were also able to visit the set and talk about possible career pathways in the film industry with cast and crew.

The town of White Point in Winton’s novel is a rough little fishing town set on a beautiful stretch of WA coastline. The main character, Georgie, says of the town ‘…the landscape got its hooks in and people stayed.’ Even though the fictional town in the book is set a few hours north of Perth, the beauty of Esperance’s coastline makes it an ideal setting, and as many locals know, it’s certainly a place that gets its hooks into you.

The turquoise ocean and white sand is also a good contrast for the lush tropical green and sunbaked red of Cape Leveque, the setting for the rest of the movie.

The gritty, tough country pub feel of the Gibson Soak was the perfect setting for the scenes set in the local pub. When I got the opportunity to go along as an extra, I jumped at the chance, mostly to have a look behind the scenes. Together with a group of locals, I gathered at the Soak for the day. Fitting with the ‘rough fishing village’ vibe, there were plenty of tattoos and dreadlocks on display, with thongs the footwear of choice for most.

The normally peaceful Soak was bustling with cast and crew, with lights, costumes, and cameras being rushed around. Then, after our ‘prop’ glasses of wine and beer were in hand, and we were all positioned perfectly, the cameras were rolling. The actors wove among the local extras, and the vibe in the pub felt just like a warm summer’s afternoon, beer glasses clinking and excited conversation buzzing. Later on, the mood changed to a more mellow evening, with Julia Stone’s exquisite bluegrass music providing a perfect accompaniment. The final scene of the night, a rough pub fight, really showed what these accomplished actors were capable of.

Dirt Music is a love story, but not the usual Hollywood type. When I first read the book, I was struck by Winton’s breathtaking descriptions, both of the coastal fishing town where the first part of the novel takes place, and of the remote coast of the Kimberley, where the novel comes to a dramatic conclusion. The love story between main character Georgie and tough outsider Lu Fox is haunting and beautiful, but that’s not what stands out most about this novel.

Rather, Dirt Music is Winton’s love story about Western Australia, the stunning and occasionally treacherous coastline, and the tough, gritty people who live here.

WA’s raw, breathtakingly beautiful, and sometimes dangerous coast is reflected in the raw honesty of the characters in Winton’s book.
