As much as we bang on about how great winter can be, I must say it’s pretty exciting to be woken up to the blissful season of spring.

After rejoicing with a morning dip (freezing but worth it), I notice the flowers starting to bloom. Wildflower season is here and we have written all about it. Head to page 6 for your favourite segment, Bush Banter: Wildflower Edition.

Being that this issue is number 42, this is a short homage to Douglas Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. In the book, the number 42 plays a significant role as the answer to the ultimate question of life thought up by a supercomputer deep thought. In the series a handy guide for hitchhiking around the galaxy is used on Arthurs travels as he discovers the truth of our world.

The guide is also handy for use in Esperance, a place I find out of this world. Here is a quick reference for hitchhikers, travellers and locals when traversing our unique universe.

In the guide, a towel is considered the most important item a hitchhiker can carry. It has many uses such as lying on the marble-sanded beaches Santraginus V or Hellfire Bay. You can wrap it around you for warmth or use to protect yourself from the strong sandy winds and heady sea vapours. You can wet it for hand-to-hand combat (or whipping your siblings). What the strag (someone who is NOT a hitchhiker) thinks is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the Galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through and still knows where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with.

The universe is full of questions. How did we get here and how did this earth become what it is today? Why did deep thought give the answer 42? The national parks in Esperance contain some of the most ancient landscapes in the world and are a great place to ask yourself these things. There is so much to discover about how and why this place is what it is. It’s no wonder more and more people are coming here. It’s a place you can ponder under bright stars and see these giant rocks and islands on the Antarctic ocean. Frenchman’s Peak is a great place for discovery. You can climb high above the ocean with nothing but wilderness as far as the eye can see. Read the signs in Cape Le Grand National Park as they give you lots of information on how the caves and rocks were formed. It’s definitely a great place for anyone to go and contemplate the true meaning of life.

In the tale, a spaceship is powered by a device that creates random occurrences to travel and defend itself. It can turn guided missiles into whales or flowers or any random object and make you appear anywhere in the universe. In Esperance, you never know what you will find.

Maybe you will look out onto the horizon and see a whale or a pod of dolphins. Or you might look at the ground and find a peculiar native flower. You can drive in any direction and find something truly marvellous, spectacular and out of the ordinary.

If you’ve been picked up or your travelling you need to appreciate your ride. In the series, the heart of gold is the ship.

Powered by the Infinite Improbability Drive and is a ship stolen by president Zaphod Beeblebrox and it becomes his ticket to freedom. Your vehicle is your ticket to freedom. Treat it with care before you explore those bush tracks and beaches. Always wash after driving on the beach and make sure you keep a spare tyre and a change kit because you never know when something random may occur.

This simple bit of advice is best demonstrated by researcher Ford Prefect as he remains calm through most of the adventures he faces. Don’t panic is good advice if you ever get bogged out of town, or come across a venomous tiger snake.

By staying calm in any situation you are able to figure out your next step. Besides what’s the use in panicking if there is nothing you can do about it.

road to ravy The two hour trip to Ravensthorpe for most can feel like a lifetime, but for those of us bush lovers, the trip this time of year is not nearly long enough. The excitement of Spring approaching is evident in the floral roadside display, as the landscape comes alive with colour.

On a recent trip to Ravy with a car full of not so enthusiastic passengers, I am in awe of the magnificent plants sprooking their beauty as we fly by at 110 clicks. Of course, it isn’t long before I have to ask the driver to pull over after spotting a spectacular orange flower. I bounce out of the car with camera in hand hoping my fellow passengers are happy to browse Facebook for a few minutes while I inspect the gorgeous plant that has caught my eye. As I approach the orange flower I notice a little plant hiding amongst an Acacia cyclops, a plant that I have only ever ogled over in my botanical books–it’s was the Gompholobium scabrum (painted lady). I can’t believe it–I’m ecstatic, what a find!

The orange flower was pretty cute as well and I’m still none the wiser after returning to the car and consulting my bundle of wildflower books.

We head off again and I’m happy to view the landscape through the car window, the Eucalyptus pleurocarpa, tetraptera and stoatii, Calothamnus gracilis and quadrifidus and the huge array of Banksias, Hakeas and Acacia’s lining the road. The Kunzea baxterii is also in full flower and growing on mass, it is a sight to see. Lucky for me the driver needs a pit stop at Munglinup, so a chance for me to nip across the road to investigate a purple flower I noticed just as we had turned off the road. Mindful at this point that my passengers may decide to leave without me, I quickly cross the road and find it’s the prickly but ever so beautiful Hovea pungens. Just as I’m about to return to the car I spot an elegant Grevillea nudiflora entwining itself amongst its fellow shrubs. I’m over the moon to have seen this gorgeous plant in its natural habitat. I spend the rest of the trip reflecting on how lucky we are to live in such a botanical paradise and trying to work out what was the plant with the orange flower.

Banksia

Hakea

Banksias are named in honour of botanist Sir Joseph Banks and are popular Australian natives due to their impressive flower spikes consisting of hundreds of smaller flowers. There are more than 170 species of banksias. The the most common species in the Esperance region are Banksia speciosa, Banksia media and also the grounds covers such as Banksia blechnifolia, Banksia petiolaris, Banksia repens and Banksia nivea.

There are around 150 species native to Australia and most of them are endemic to the South West of Western Australia. They are closely related to Grevilleas and the two are sometimes confused. In the southeast region you’ll find species such as Hakea laurina, Hakea corymbosa, Hakea adnata and Hakea trifurcata.

Commonly known as Wattle, Acacia belongs to the family Mimosaceae and holds around 1350 species, they are easily recognised by their bright yellow flowers individually arranged in inflorescences that may be either globular heads or cylindrical spikes. Each inflorescence may comprise from as few as 3 individual flowers. Common species in the region include Acacia cyclops, Acacia saligna, Acacia nigricans and Acacia pulchella.

The Grevillea gives Australia some of our most beautiful and versatile native plants. Grevilleas come in all shapes from low growing ground covers, small shrubs and hedges, to tall trees. Their unique flowers in sunset shades attract native wildlife to feed on the sweet nectar. In Esperance you’ll find species such as Grevillea incrassata and Grevillea excelsior.

the humble cup of tea Ah, Tea! The perfect drink all year round, but especially wonderful in the cooler months.

According to legend, tea was first discovered in China in around 2700 BC, when some tea leaves blew into Emperor Shen Nung’s pot while his servant was boiling drinking water. Shen Nung was a keen herbalist and decided to drink the water. As a result, the Chinese have been drinking tea for centuries. Europeans didn’t discover their love affair with tea until much later. The Dutch were the first to import tea from China to Holland in 1606, from there, tea became a fashionable drink throughout Europe.

When tea first became popular in Britain, it was very heavily taxed. This meant that a network of criminal gangs sprang up to smuggle tea into the country to the eager tea drinkers for many years until the tax was dropped. Luckily these days, tea is widely available and affordable.

Tea is the world’s most popular beverage, beating out coffee, wine, beer, and soft drinks.

There are many purported health benefits from drinking tea. Everything from better heart health through to an improved immune system - but largely, the jury is still out on the benefits of tea. Most tea drinkers find tea soothing and refreshing. If you’re stuck in a rut with the type of tea you drink, there are many different types of teas and herbal teas that you can buy, but here are a few that you can make at home.

Ginger is great for relieving nausea, and it may also reduce inflammation. It is very warming, so it’s great for a cold evening, or if you are feeling like you need a bit of a pick me up. To make Ginger tea, simply place 3 or 4 very thin slices of fresh ginger root in a cup, and add hot water.

Infuse for one minute before drinking. You can also add lemon or honey to taste.

Chai is the word for tea in many countries around the world. In India, Masala Chai is milky tea flavoured with spices such as cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, and cloves. Chai has become popular lately in the form of ‘Chai Latte’, this super sweet cafe favourite, often made from syrup or pre-mixed powder.

Homemade Chai is an entirely different drink, so aromatic and flavoursome that you won’t even need to add much sweetness.

Put the spices into a mortar and pestle and crush them lightly (you can skip this step, but it gives a stronger flavour). Put all ingredients into a saucepan and bring to a gentle simmer. Allow to simmer for five minutes, then strain well and sweeten with honey or brown sugar to taste.

The latest beverage to become popular is Turmeric ‘tea’. A compound in turmeric called curcumin has been shown to have strong inflammatory properties. There are also many other claims to the health benefits of turmeric, and people in India have been making drinks from turmeric for centuries. It is perhaps no coincidence that turmeric tea has long been popular in Okinawa, an area in Japan which is renowned for longevity. Usually, turmeric tea is made with black pepper, which helps the body to absorb the curcumin in turmeric.

Peppermint tea is another great infusion to make from fresh ingredients. Peppermint tea is good for soothing an irritated digestive system, and may also boost immunity and reduce stress levels.

Peppermint is a variety of mint that is very easy to grow in the home garden. In fact, if you don’t want peppermint taking over the whole garden, it is best to grow it in a pot.

Peppermint likes plenty of water and will spread quickly.

To make fresh peppermint tea, just put a handful of fresh leaves straight into your teapot, and add hot water.

Disenchantment is the latest creation from an animation legend. To say 'legend' is a bit of understatement. He’s the inventor of primetime animated television.

His name was immortalised on a TV screen within a TV screen during the opening credits of a television show that changed everything. The man is Matt Groening, and you may remember him from series such as The Simpsons and Futurama.

Once a trendsetter, The Simpsons dominated the 90’s and early 2000’s before programmers started booking other animated shows like Family Guy and South Park, whose creators have praised The Simpsons for their inspiration and contribution to animated television. Today there are hundreds of animated TV shows thanks to Comedy Central and streaming sites like Netflix.

The Simpsons may have been controversial once upon a time, but nowadays it's child’s play compared to the new shows on the block. Shows such as Rick and Morty, BoJack Horseman and Big Mouth are setting the trends and it's hard to wonder if Matt Groening’s iconic goofy puns and visual gags can keep up with today's fast-paced and often savage humour.

Well, the good news is, he doesn’t follow the new trend, in fact, he flat out ignores it and sticks to the style we know and love. Matt Groening’s Disenchantment keeps his old style of humour in a fantasy setting. This isn’t a direct spoof as they have created their own world to play in with references to popular shows such as Game Of Thrones and Vikings.

The show isn’t overly profane but can be somewhat violent with the typical groaning alcohol-fuelled characters and crazy antics. The character animation is in the Futurama style of character instead of the yellow Simpsons. What is new and something we see in the later Futurama episodes is that they have included a main story arc within the series as opposed to The Simpsons, whose world seems to reset every episode. The story arc begins from the start and the season ends leaving you with a bunch of questions that need answers.

The first few episodes remind me of the start of Futurama when we are introduced to new characters, their

ambitions and desires before they come together to form the group we will become familiar with.

The main trio is the elf ironically named Elfo, the princess, Bean and her personal demon, Lucy.

We are also introduced to a lingering evil plot which seems to play a predominant background role as each episode has its own side-story with challenges, new characters, victories and losses.

The trio resides in 'Dreamland' with Bean's father, King Zøg and her evil stepmother, Queen Oona, who embodies the essence of all the evil stepmothers.

The shows boasts a strong cast of voice actors who are all are fantastic. Fans of British comedy might recognise Matt Berry as Prince Merkimer (the unlucky Prince who gets turned into a pig) and Noel Fielding as Stan the Executioner, both star of The Mighty Boosh and The IT Crowd.

Broad City's Abbi Jacobson plays Bean and The Eric Andre Show's Eric Andre plays Lucy.

Our favourite John DiMaggio, better known as Bender the Robot plays King Zøg. The cast does a fantastic job of carrying the characters through this fantasy world making Disenchantment a great show for families to enjoy with plenty of heart.

You can hear the noise from the shearing shed a mile away. Loud music thumps away as the shearers busily keep their minds on doing a great job with every blow to get the wool off the sheep.

The smell of the lanolin as you walk into the shed hits you and immediately I go and touch the soft greasy wool, check out the crinkles, colour and strength. It brings back memories as a kid helping my Dad, jumping in the pieces of wool and falling asleep after a busy day in the yards.

Recently, I had what you women call ‘man flu’! My nose ran like a tap. Definitely no sympathy from my other half, as she took the opportunity to remind me that the laundry tap needed my attention! I had a headache and sore bones so I took the health experts advice and decide to take my germs to bed rather than go to work and infect all those around me.

The lambs wait in the pen, awaiting the arrival of the ewe after shearing, so there is plenty of bleating happening. Back they go to a new paddock with tree shelters to keep them warm before the next rain event. I feel proud that we can produce an incredible natural fibre on our farm.

The shearers can shear anywhere from 150 to over 200 sheep per day. The Rouseabouts pick up the fleece, throw it on the table, skirt the dirty wool off around the edges, roll it up, ready for the Classer. They test it by feel and sight and class it into similar wool types for the Wool Presser to bale. A bale can weigh anywhere up to a maximum 204 kilograms. The wool bales get transported to Perth, bales weighed and core tested for micron, vegetable matter, staple strength and staple length.

Now, I don’t consider myself to be a malingerer so I thought a day in bed was not excessive. I settled in with my hot lemon and honey drink, last month’s Tide, and iPad. In between sniffing and coughing I found the day very rewarding reading, watching and listening to all the programs and articles I have time for. I realised that I could give myself permission to take it easy because of my ‘man flu’. I’m thinking that taking a day out every now and again is actually quite rewarding, not only for my physical health but also for my mental health.

So, go ahead and start planning a lounging day in whatever shape or form that might be. Remember you don’t have to be sick. However, it might be worth fixing that dripping tap first!

The Premier Mill Hotel Being that Esperance is 720 kilometres southeast of Perth, we accept the 8-hour drive for what it is and rarely adventure much outside of that. Are you one to get up at 4am to try to make it before lunch or do you treat it like a full working day, leaving at 8am, arriving just in time for peak hour. Which way do you go–is it dependent on the time it takes or the stops along the way? If you’re an Esperance local, this should be sounding quite familiar.

The basement is occupied by a bar, which guests can go to mingle and is open to the public. On the first floor, breakfast, lunch and dinner are all served at a Dome cafe, while the hotel rooms fill the building’s second and third floors. I’m not sure if it’s the bustling vibe that lingers at night or the morning sun glowing through the linen curtains of my room, but I never want to leave.

Formerly a flour mill, built by local farmer and politician Frederick Henry Piesse in 1891, a clever industrial design of its time. After the doors closed in 1977, the mill slowly became obsolete and the building fell into disrepair prompting the Shire of Katanning to sell for just $1 and after a two-year multi-million-dollar restoration, the doors have opened once again.

Much of the 127-year-old building’s original infrastructure has been retained as part of the restoration. Each room displays another element of the building’s history. While checking in, I am told that I am staying in a purifying room. After doing some quick research I found out that here is where both the wheat at the start of the milling process and the flour at the end came to be purified. Bespoke furniture has helped maintain the building’s industrial feel. As I walk around the building, I notice each space has been elevated by heritage features telling the story of the Mill at every corner I turn.

Recently I heard about a new place I should stop, The Premier Mill Hotel in Katanning, so I make the decision to book a night on my next returning trip from Perth to Esperance. The town is a natural beauty, it’s a town you almost immediately want to learn more about as history seems to ooze out of every corner. As I drive down the main street, I notice the hotel sitting tall with each room lit up, I can already tell I’m about to stay somewhere special.

Feeling a little overwhelmed at the moment–my lists just keep getting bigger and a lot more intricate. There’s a sigh of relief each time I’m able to cross something off, though it feels like the next item is generally some outlandish project that I have thought of concocting.

Today, I find myself having to write off bits and pieces just to regain some sanity. Sometimes the targets we set ourselves are unrealistic. It becomes important to take a step back, take a deep breath and prioritise.

The weekend just gone was fantastic, another absolutely golden 75 Club at the Cannery Arts Centre. Michael Dunstan, Jordy Maxwell and Campbell Garratt all played brilliantly. The speed at which the latest Club 75 sold out is an absolute credit to the Cannery crew, volunteers and staff. A big thanks to everyone who grabbed tickets and enjoyed the night, by supporting these events through attendance we are able to continue to deliver great tunes and fun atmospheres.

September will be a super fun month, there is an amazing number of events on the horizon, kicking off this Friday with 80/90s RNB night at Travellers INN Central. I’m heading down to grab my costume this arvo. Hopefully, some cool fluoro hiding at the op shop.

Grand Casual are ramping up with a super cool tour just around the corner, incorporating Albany, Margaret River, Perth and Bridgetown. It has been rather hectic since our last interview, to be honest.

Joe threw us in the deep in by conjuring a coveted slot at Settlers Tavern In Margaret River.

The Margs gig we have locked in to play is two 60-minute sets. At the time of the booking, we had close to 60 minutes. So we have been madly writing and refining new material since. Matt has switched to electric guitar, which is working wonders for the sound, allows for wider dynamics between the tracks.

Tel l us a bout your tour, what are you most excited a bout?

In WA alone, there is so much great music being made and performed. Hitting the road and playing these iconic venues, and diving into the Perth scene will give us a real feel for where we are at, as a band. Playing to audiences that haven’t heard us is super exciting and super daunting at the same time. That being said where all craving getting out of the jam room, honestly getting to the point of cabin fever.

Can we expect any new songs soon?

We have ten new tracks that are ready to perform. And the style is diverse. Western Border is one that really stands out for me, it jumps from a fairly mellow indie kinda tune then, as Paul Ricciardo describes it, “a mix of Pink Floyd guitar with Beastie Boys Hip Hop with undertones of rock”. So I guess you all have that to look forward to.

Recording, as always, is just around the corner, and really is of highest priority. 2019 and onwards we would really love to get out of WA for a few shows and that is only possible with a super solid EP.

There’s nothing more startling than a hitchhiker when we see one. The roads these days are often bare, with everyone driving to their destination in the safety of their own vehicle.

But when you do see a person with their thumb up heading the way you’re going what goes through your mind? Is it a) I can’t be bothered to deal with someone talking to me the whole way, b) that person looks like a freak or worse an axe murderer, or c) I should really pick that person up… oops, too late, I drove past.

Whatever the reason, most of us are inclined to just cruise on past, even if the person looks completely normal. Images appear in our heads which resemble Charlize Theron in Monster, or pretty much every road horror movie ever made. These images are code red alerts to just step on the accelerator and forget you ever saw anyone. But remember, that person is also putting their faith in you.

As a somewhat regular hitcher, sometimes the worst part about it is not knowing the driver you’re getting in the car with. In France, the guy that sped down the Autobahn at a mere 160km/h pointing to the video playing in the front, with barely an eye on the road. In Serbia, the man who started listing off his worries and woes about his ex-wife. Sometimes the worst part is just waiting on the side of the road for hours baring your soul and risking your dignity, or identity in France they even take your passport off you if you’re seen to be hitchhiking near any main road!

But perhaps the most disheartening of all is to actually be standing there, seeing good people drive past, knowing they are going your way and that they have seats spare, yet they still pass. I know, not all drivers are evil, just like not all hitchhikers are murderers. We are all human and may just want to cut each other some slack instead of jumping to conclusions straight away. The fact of the matter is, hitch-hiking can be the best way to get around, meet new people, see more places and save on air pollution.

So, from one hitcher to another, please, keep that thumb up.

And from one driver to another, please, give the next person you see a ride. You never know where it may take you.

For the final time, I re-set my line, this time high up in the curl of the tube. My left hand held the rail tight as I adjusted my trailing hand high up in the curling vortex. I aimed at the tightening, seemingly everlasting acorn of light. Then instantaneously the wave took a breath in slowing my momentum as I immersed with the spit, firing me out onto my shoulder. I looked towards the beach to claim my epic journey to see that onlookers were applauding, hooting and hollering. Uncontrollably my arms went up completing my ride and then to my head in utter amazement.

I slid sideways down the five-foot heaving beast straight into the pit, fins sliding out almost ahead of me.

This luckily stalled my momentum but amazingly held me tight in the seemingly stationary throat of the throwing mass of water above me.

Engulfed in the white, frothy, hollow void I gained control and found my rail. I set my line and looked up to find my way out. The wave bent and warped as it sucked out on the almost dry, limpet and barnacle infested reef. I started sliding down again as the wave hit the notoriously shallow end section called the bowl. The curtain looked impenetrable and guillotine-like; there was only one option! I regained my line and for a moment doubted I would ever emerge. As soon as this thought entered it had vanished with; “Well, I’ve made it this far, I’m coming out!”.

He looked at me with a doubting scowl, fearful of a pole driven fate; and said to me “do you want this one?” Hmm!?

I was in deep, on the shallow part of the inside take off zone. Local have termed it “the shlurp” for its critical and draining-ley hollow nature. I nodded a yep and thanks to the timid grom. With a nervous grin I plunged my board back and with two deep driving paddles the wave picked me up.

Method

Ingredients 250g vermicelli noodles 2 corn cobs, kernels removed 1 bunch chinese broccoli, chopped 3 spring onions 1 bunch coriander, chopped 2 tbsp turmeric 1 lemongrass stalk, roughly chopped 1 long red chilli, chopped 1/3 cup roasted peanuts 1 tbsp tamarind puree 1/4 cup fish sauce 1 tbsp soy sauce 2 cups chicken stock 1 can of coconut milk

1. For the soup base, pulse white spring onion, coriander, turmeric, lemongrass, chilli, peanuts, tamarind, fish and soy sauces in a small food processor for 20 seconds to roughly chop.

2. Add 1 cup stock and whiz until smooth.

Add coconut milk and remaining cup of stock and whiz to combine.

3. Transfer soup to a pan over medium heat and cook for 2 minutes or until fragrant.

Add 1 litre of water and bring to the boil, then add noodles and cook for 2 minutes or until tender, adding corn and broccoli for the final 1 minute of cooking.

4. Ladle soup into bowls. Top with coriander leaves and sliced spring onion and serve with extra fish sauce. *Feeling extra hungry? Add some tofu.

In 1850, a young couple, Mrs Emily and Mr Henry Ferby Brooks, sailed from England to Australia. They had with them their two-year-old son John Paul, and their baby daughter, Sarah, who were both born on the ship, just before it set sail. Emily’s unmarried sister, Mary Jane Donovan, was also on board. Just three months after they arrived at their new home in Geelong, Victoria, Henry Brooks contracted typhoid and died. His widow, Emily, was only 18 years old. She and Mary Jane helped to support each other until Mary Jane married a wealthy pastoralist in 1854. After this, Emily opened up a small, exclusive school to support herself and her two young children, which she ran for many years.

When John Paul left school, he worked for his wealthy uncle, Mary Jane’s husband Thomas Edols, for a while.

After Emily had a falling out with Thomas, John Paul leased a property and tried his hand at dairy farming.

Emily Brooks died in 1910 after suffering a broken hip some years earlier. She had been bedridden for years due to the pain from her hip.

One of the Brooks’ contemporaries, Mrs Crocker of Balladonia, wrote of the Brooks family that ‘…theirs was a sad chapter… Miss Brooks came to the district as a charming and accomplished young woman of twenty and truly wasted her sweetness on the desert air.’

This may have been so, but the Brooks also proved themselves to be resilient and determined, and Sarah’s efforts certainly helped to discover and catalogue many of the plants of the area. They were true pioneers whose legacy continues to this day.

A Cut Above The Rest

In 1883, Baron Ferdinand von Mueller placed an advertisement in the West Australian newspaper, asking for settlers in different areas of Western Australia to send him botanical samples. Von Mueller was one of the most famous botanists of the day. He was the government appointed botanist Victoria, and later on, the director of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne.

Sarah Brooks started sending him samples of the plants that grew around the Israelite Bay area.

Sarah sent hundreds of botanical samples to von Mueller, and von Mueller returned the favour by naming two different plants after Sarah, Scaevola brooksiana and Hakea brooksiana. Sarah was a keen gardener and propagated many plants. Sarah and John Paul also both wrote articles for von Mueller which were published in journals, describing the landscape, geology, and fauna of the Esperance region.

In John Paul’s article, he described Israelite Bay and the surrounding area in great detail. He also quoted some of the Aboriginal names for features of the area, showing that he had learned at least a little from the First People of the area.

Sarah and John Paul buried her at Balbinia. Sarah had not been out of the area since she arrived from Albany in 1874 and in 1927, Sarah travelled to Perth, at the age of 77.

She commented that ‘the chief thing that surprised me was the noise in Perth.’ Sarah also commented on the flowers that were abundant in Perth. In 1928, neighbours found Sarah semi paralysed after she had suffered a stroke at Balbinia.

They took her to Norseman in their 2 seater Buick, but Sarah died in hospital and was buried in the Norseman cemetery. In 1930, the same neighbours, the Dimers, found John Paul, lying injured in a paddock. He had been lying out in the open for two days, and he died later from exposure. He is buried with his mother at Balbinia.

The family managed to scrape out a living from the harsh land, eventually moving to a new, stone house called Waratah. John Paul became the first linesman at the Telegraph station at Israelite Bay. Sarah, who was an accomplished pianist, painted well, and could speak several languages, would have been a very eligible bachelorette in the new settlement of Esperance.

However, her mother reportedly would not let her marry, as she wanted Sarah to have a wealthy suitor. John Paul built a new stone house at Balbinia, which is still there to this day, and he and his mother moved in. Sarah stayed at Waratah on her own, until it burnt

down, and she moved in to Balbinia.

John Paul all sailed to Albany, determined to settle in the Esperance area. At the time, the fledgeling Western Australian government was advertising generous leases in the area, hoping to attract new settlers. The little family applied for a lease of 100,000 acres in the Esperance area, bought a horse, cart, and a tent, and set out from Albany to their new home. When they arrived in Esperance, they were received warmly at the Dempster Homestead, but continued on to their new home at Point Malcolm, near Israelite Bay. The small family bought 400 sheep, and built a very simple house called Marlburup.
