The Tide is back from an overseas adventure, and gearing up for what will be a hectic month of shopping, socialising, camping, beach and work. Tide & Co will be resuming regular opening hours, and open for all market days leading up to Christmas!

If you were around town in April, you might have been spotted at the Museum Village’s Twilight Markets. The eventful evening of live music, shopping, booze and tacos, turned out to be a huge success. Now the markets are back on and will be popping up once a month over the next five months. The first of the series will be just before Chrissy, on Friday, December 20. Come down from 5pm onwards, grab a drink or some food, listen to some live music all while grabbing some last-minute gifts from local stallholders to put under the tree.

Summer holidays are perfect for camping in the Esperance area. The weather is great, you can spend all day in your bathers, and there’s always plenty to do. The biggest problem that you’ll face is where to go. There is plenty of choices, which is good because some of the campsites can be quite busy.

Here are some of the top camping sites around Esperance to check out.

2 WD AC C E S S There are dozens of camping places within a short drive from Esperance that are accessible by twowheel drive cars. Many of them have great facilities and access to amazing beaches. Here are some to check out.

Quagi Beach Campsite 70 km west of Esperance, off Farrell Road, this camping area has plenty of protected bush sites.

There are sheltered sites, and access to Quagi Beach, which offers excellent swimming and fishing.

Camp fees do apply.

Stokes National Park Campsite Located 80 km west of Esperance, on Stokes Inlet Road.

There is a section of gravel road, but it is still easily accessible with a 2WD. There is a simple bush campsite, with running water and toilets, and access to a calm inlet which is great for swimming and kayaking. The beach is nearby, and there are some great places in the park to explore, such as historical Moir’s Homestead. Camp fees do apply.

Campsites in Cape Le Grand National Park Offering excellent facilities at both Cape Le Grand and Lucky Bay, with plenty of campsites, these campsites are both accessible by sealed road. Toilets, showers, and BBQ facilities are available, as well as easy beach access, great walking tracks, and stunning views. A booking system is now in place for both of these campsites and is essential!

Check online, or at the Esperance Visitor’s Centre for more information. Park fees and camping fees apply.

Other campsites that are accessible by 2WD vehicle include Thomas River, the Seal Creek campsite at Poison Creek, Starvation Bay and Mason’s Bay.

Alexander Bay

Munglinup Beach

Also known as A-Bay, this picturesque campsite is located 80 km east of Esperance off Alexander Bay Road. The road can be in poor condition, so 4WDs are recommended. There are some sheltered campsites and toilet facilities also available.

Located 140 km from Esperance, Munglinup Beach is a beautiful area with a sheltered campsite. Offering toilets and water, with beach access and a protected lagoon that is perfect for swimming or snorkelling, Munglinup Beach is worth a visit. Camp fees apply.

Mt Ragged

There are many camping areas throughout the Esperance area that are accessible by 4WD only. These include camping areas such as Israelite Bay, Kennedy’s Beach and Membinup Beach. There are many other areas where camping is permitted throughout the national parks and around historical sites such as Balbinya and Deralinya. If in doubt, check with the local rangers or the Esperance Visitor’s Centre.

Peak Charles is located in the Great Western Woodlands, 170 km north-west of Esperance, off the Coolgardie Highway. The 600m granite peak offers a challenging climb, with spectacular views. The campground is very simple, just offering toilets and some cleared sites. Campers should take drinking water and all supplies.

Woody Island Try something different and take the Woody Island Eco Tours boat to Recherche Archipelago’s most accessible island.

Unpowered campsites are available for you to pitch your own tent, or spend a little bit more and book a pre-pitched tent or safari hut which includes made-up beds for you to sleep on. A camp kitchen, toilet and shower facilities and a kiosk and bar also available on site. See Woody Island Eco Tours website for booking info.

Other camping areas that are located within a few hours drive of Esperance include Hopetoun, and the spectacular Fitzgerald National Park, as well as the Cape Arid National Park, which offers some great camping spots.

T HIN G S TO C ON SI DE R As summer can be the peak time of year for camping, some campsites may be full, and most cannot be booked in advance, except for Cape Le Grand and Lucky Bay campsites. You should always take plenty of water and expect to be fully self-sufficient. This includes taking away all your rubbish. Don’t attempt remote or 4WD only campsites unless you are well equipped and experienced in 4WDing. Even for experienced campers, you should always let someone know where you are going! Be aware that fire bans will be in place across the whole region, with bushfire danger high, so campfires are not permitted. Take a gas BBQ, and be very careful with anything that could start a fire.

If you need a campsite closer to town, the Esperance Shire will be opening up the overflow camping area at the Greater Sports Ground. And don’t forget that camping is not allowed at any of the beaches in town, fines will apply. For further information on any of these sites or any other suggestions, you can check with the Esperance Visitor’s Centre.

Located in the Cape Arid National Park, Mount Ragged is only accessible by 4WD. The campground has very basic facilities, and the climb up Tower Peak is quite challenging but offers impressive views as well as beautiful native wildflowers. Campers should be well prepared and experienced with bush driving and camping.

Lou’s Yume Wine Dream WORDS BY KARLI FLORISSON

The wine comes to our table in an unassuming piccolo bottle. The label is delicate and beautiful, with the word Yume written on the side, along with a Japanese character and a simple illustration of a dandelion.

When I read the label, I find out this is not wine but rather ‘ambrosia’, made with honey. According to Greek mythology, ambrosia is a drink of the gods. It can confer wisdom, strength, and even immortality on whoever drinks it. We pour two glasses. The ambrosia is sparkling and perfectly chilled. I am expecting sweetness, but instead, it is beautifully floral, dry on the palette, with the unmistakable overtones of Esperance honey. It has a light acidic finish and rivals any really good sparkling wine that I’ve had before. It is the perfect drink for a hot summer’s day, preferably with a view of the beach.

Yume means ‘dream’ in Japanese, and the wine label is the dream of Esperance local Lou Chalmer. Over a glass of Yume ambrosia, Lou tells me that she grew up here in Esperance, with parents who were scientists, and involved in agriculture. After finishing high school, Lou went to Perth to university, determined to avoid science or agriculture as a topic of study. Predictably, it was only a matter of time before Lou decided that her chosen course of journalism wasn’t really for her, and she moved to Melbourne to start an Environmental Science degree.

Specialising in agricultural sustainability for her honours thesis, with a particular focus on the beef industry, she found herself drawn into the world of agroecology; a little-known field of study that takes a systems approach to sustainable development in our food and fibre production systems.

U P NEXT Fast forward to the end of Lou’s study, and she found herself wondering what she would do next. After many years in the hospitality industry, Lou decided to pursue her interest in wine. Along with some business partners, she opened a venue in Melbourne that had a strong focus on natural wines. In 2016, Lou was able to source some Semillon grapes from the Yarra Valley, and with some help from a winemaker friend, she made her first vintage of wine. Yume Wines was born. Along the way, Lou was able to talk to the owners of the vineyard where the grapes were sourced, and they agreed to change some of their practices - reducing pesticide use and growing some herbs among the vines to increase biodiversity in the area – changes which they eventually implemented throughout their whole operation.

Throughout this time in Melbourne, Lou says that she used to dream about the ocean. After one such dream, she realised it was time to come back to WA, so she moved back to Perth for a few months in 2018. On a trip to Esperance for Christmas, her car broke down, a serendipitous moment which lead to her decision to move back home for good. She still maintained her passion for winemaking, so she managed to source some grapes from a property in Mt Barker. These were made into a small vintage of wine under the Yume label, but with grapes difficult to source in Esperance, Lou began to think of other options.

It is obvious that being back in Esperance suits Lou. She loves the laidback lifestyle and the healthier pace of life. The Esperance community is rapidly getting a taste for Yume ambrosia, so Lou is busy keeping up with demand. Still, she continues to dream. One day in the future, there may be a venue that showcases both Esperance’s spectacular honey and Yume’s wine and ambrosia. When producing wine, Lou’s mantra is ‘nothing added, nothing taken away.’ She is passionate about pursuing natural and traditional methods of wine production. In pursuit of this passion, Lou found herself on a trip to the country of Georgia, which is sandwiched between Russia, Central Asia, and Eastern Europe. Georgia is thought to be the country where grape wine was first produced, some 8000 years ago. Traditional wines in Georgia are still made using natural methods, in giant clay pots called qvevri that are buried in the ground. Back in Australia, Lou was involved in starting up another wine label, called Analog, which utilised the traditional method of making wine in a qvevri.

‘I’ve always been fascinated by local honey.

Wherever you go in the world, honey tastes different.’ While Esperance may not be the best place to source grapes, we have no shortage of world-class honey. Lou also points out that as with grapes, a variety of honey will be influenced by variations in local conditions, such as elevation, temperatures and moisture. She loves the way that the landscape of a local area can be magnified in the honey from that area. Lou teamed up with local beekeeper and Esperance Honey owner Kevin MacNeall, and started experimenting with a batch of ambrosia. She began with Merrit honey, sourced from the Great Western Woodlands, north of Esperance and close to Norseman. Lou also made a batch of ambrosia with local Merrit and Mort honey, flavoured with native botanicals that she has foraged from her parents’ farm. This bottling is called Djilba Bushwacka. Djilba is the Nyungar word for the season ‘first spring’ in the Nyungar calendar, and is the first in an ongoing series intended to reflect the changing seasons.

Bringing their surfboards, boogie boards, paddleboards, kayaks and other watercraft, together they made the strong statement that Norwegian company Equinor’s proposal to drill for oil in the Great Australian Bight is NOT welcome. After listening to passionate speeches, the protesters got in the water, with hundreds of people paddling out in a show of unity.

A few days later, on November 26, the Esperance Shire Council responded to this call from the community, voting unanimously to oppose the drilling in the Bight. The resolution undertaken by the council stated that they would acknowledge concerns from the community about the potential for oil spills in the Great Australian Bight. The council also stated that they would oppose any current and future oil exploration, testing, or drilling proposals in the Bight, or other locations that might impact the Esperance coast.

One of the requirements for Equinor is that they consult with local communities about their proposal. The Shire Council’s strong stance should send a strong message to both Equinor, and the Australian Federal regulatory body, NOPSEMA.

There are many reasons to unite against any drilling for oil in the Great Australian Bight. This area of our coastline is entirely unspoiled. It is a haven for a variety of marine life, including many species of dolphins and whales. The endangered southern right whales frequent the area, as do humpback whales and other whale species. Seismic surveying used in the exploration phase of drilling for oil poses a significant risk for whales and many other marine species, and has been shown to interfere with migratory patterns, and affect whale populations for hundreds of thousands of kilometres. Seismic surveying, as well as increased traffic, noise, and chemical pollution in the area would also impact fish stocks, and zooplankton, potentially devastating this vital ecosystem.

As well as the potential impact on marine life, there is the risk of an oil spill in the pristine waters of the Great Australian Bight. Equinor’s proposed oil well is deep underground, at more than two kilometres depth. It would also be located 370km offshore, in remote and treacherous waters. Equinor states that an oil spill would take at least 17 days to cap, in a best-case scenario. The oil from a spill would affect vast stretches of Australia’s coastline, potentially all the way to Esperance’s shores and beyond.

Greenpeace reports that Equinor has had ten oil spills in its operations in other parts of the world in just the last three and a half years. As a community that has already experienced an oil spill, when the Sanko Harvest sank off our coastline, we never want to see our incredible beaches and marine life affected by oil again. While Equinor argues that the risk of an oil spill is small, any risk at all is too significant to contemplate.

Those of us who live in Esperance don’t have to be convinced of our privilege.

We know that we live in paradise. We know how lucky we are. Many of us will fight tooth and nail to protect what we have here. We won’t stop this fight until Equinor’s proposal is either withdrawn or declined. And any plan to drill in the Bight will be met with the same response from the Esperance community – No Way.

There is one reason that people might support the proposal to drill for oil in the Great Australian Bight – money.

Ironically, as Equinor is a Norwegian company, the largest percentage of that money will not be staying in Australia. Some money would, of course, filter back into the Australian economy, via royalties, spending, and the creation of some new jobs in the industry. Let’s not get too excited about the impact that this money might have on our economy, though.

It is estimated that Equinor would not begin paying royalties until at least 2040. In the intervening years, the likelihood is that our government would subsidise Equinor’s activities, as they do with most of Australia’s fossil fuel industry. Still, some things are more important than money. And the people of Esperance have decided that our coastline, our marine life, and our beautiful beaches are much more valuable than money. Some things are worth protecting no matter what the cost.

I’ve been working within the West Australian music industry in varying capacities for around about seven years, all up now. My small business Kyza Presents recently turned five which felt like quite the milestone.

Michael Dunstan is an artist that I’ve seen develop over this time, the lad has a close relationship with Esperance, his gigs down here always feel like a truly local show.

Howdy Kyz! I sure did, used to work out at Beaumont with the Harkness family a little further east than Condy.

The changeup to work down on the south coast was super timely for me, and I absolutely loved the whole experience. Haha nah, I don’t feel like I have local status, but I do have an incredible network of close friends down in Esperance that make the place feel like home every single time I’m down. There’s a warm welcoming community in Esperance and I’ll always quickly jump at any excuse to drive down and see everyone.

The turning point was an experience perhaps 4 years ago that left me struggling to grasp reality in the face of trauma. For 6 months I was crippled by my inability to cope with severe anxiety and panic attacks on a daily basis. I didn’t really have much choice but to defer my university studies, as I couldn’t keep up with the Physiotherapy study workload in this head-space. Music through this time period became a pretty important source of respite, and the fact I could go out and play music and be paid felt like a novelty and was all I wanted to do for the time being. Definitely a blessing in the wake of adversity.

Top-notch! I could be a little biased as I get to play to a bunch of good friends, but a love for music definitely runs deep in the community and the vibes are always high. Some of the chats I’ve had with people after shows have been quite profound and incredibly insightful. I think Esperance crew are good at expressing their appreciation, emotions or thoughts in an open and concise manner; the people are real and it’s powerful. Also, a great bunch to get on the beers with haha, it wasn’t a successful event unless Jurg’s gets his shirt off!

I think consistency is key! If you’ve got music, put it out as soon as you can, follow it up with more shortly after and get sharing it the best you can.

While starting out just keep it simple and control the things you can control. Having good sounding recordings is important, it’s all you’ve got really!

Save a little more money and have a search around, our state is blessed with many great producers, but finding one that gels with your personality and style is crucial. Lastly, time is your friend, the earlier you can get a song out, the sooner people can listen and share it with friends; it’s exponential.

I try to write regularly in a journal with no intention of writing songs. When I try to write lyrics for songs, nothing happens. Most of them are just musings of daily life, surrounds and what I’m experiencing, and later on, when I have a new guitar melody or chords that feel special, I’ll search for something to match from the journal. A couple do come out of thin air when playing the guitar, but I’d have to be feeling something pretty intensely for that to happen usually.

Play as many shows in as many different places as humanly possible to support the launch of the debut album In The Grand Scheme (planned release date of February 28, 2020)! Australian tour commences February 27, 2020 and whilst I’m still planning it now, I hope to span it over two to three months. New Zealand tour in Spring, and would really love to try to get away to Canada/UK during Australian winter for some shows, but will wait and see how the Australian tour pans out! Hopefully heaps of adventure and good vibes to come.

Money is a 7m hurdle and the inability to get your music in the places and hands record label artists do with the strong team behind them. Self-funding recording, touring, merch and living expenses is wild and there are some pretty daunting upfront costs. The debut album ‘In The Grand Scheme’ I just finished will exceed $15,000 in cost before release, which doesn’t leave much (if any really) to promote! When artists say every CD purchase, shirt, or sharing of their music goes a mile to keep them afloat, it couldn’t be more true and is probably helping fund more new music releases.

If Kyza Presents looks like a relatively cohesive entity on the surface, I guarantee that is not the truth behind the scenes. Is it like this for all small businesses? A never-ending general hectic existence, and the almost impossible task of switching off and taking a breather?

I’ve spoken to other local small business owners, and it seems reasonably well in unison across the board. At the moment I feel so damn far behind with my summer programming, always rushing to catch up work. Best laid plans that felt so damn perfect on initial conception have to evolve or be canned all together to preserve my general sanity. I wonder whether I need a secretary? I wonder whether I need a strategic plan that will give my work a little more direction? Writing it all down seems like it would really make sense. To be honest, I’ve been less than my relatively sound functioning self of late.

I’ve been eating so much damn chocolate while trying to get my head around breaking the cycle of yo-yo dieting (a character trait of my 34-year existence). I guess this all comes down to something that we listen to regularly.

The truth that we see on the surface whether it be social media or an individual sunny disposition is a perfect representation of what a person strives to be, the reality will always be vastly different. I’m looking at the Balmy Nights poster thinking, I’ve reached my peak, how could I do anything better than that? (Thanks so much to everyone who was involved in Balmy Nights what a cracker of an evening). Writing is a true catharsis for me, and when I get to write as I have just now, I feel damn fine. Thanks, Bronte for letting me rant and have a little place in The Tide.

So, December, oh man, you have given me some headaches over the last week. Programming regularly feels like I’m cooking up something in a large cauldron, so many ingredients, so many moving parts. The event will run from 5pm with food stalls, Lucky Bay Brewery, Markets stalls, and Museum Village shops open. On the music front, you’ll get to see Campbell Garratt, Leila Ben, Chris Edmundson, and Irish Lee Thornton, fun times.

Every 10 minutes, Australians send 6,000 kilograms of fashion and textile waste to landfill. Yes, you read that right. The enormous amounts of clothing that are sent to landfill every single day in Australia are just one of the hidden costs of fast-fashion. Here is another cost: that cheap cotton t-shirt that you picked up because it was cute and on sale took 2,700 litres of water to make. And there are still more costs. 90% of the garments imported into Australia come from Asia, where they are predominantly made by young, poorly paid women, kept trapped in a cycle of poverty by the poor conditions in the clothing industry. According to an Oxfam report, only 4% of what Australians spend on clothes goes to the garment workers. Add to this the environmental pollution created in the manufacturing process of our clothing, and slowly a picture begins to emerge. Cheap clothing isn’t really cheap at all.

In case you didn’t know, ‘fast-fashion’ is a term used by fashion retailers to describe inexpensive designs that move quickly to meet new trends. Fast-fashion is easy to consume, mainly because it’s cheap. You can wander through any big shopping centre and find attractive clothing that costs less than the price of a takeaway meal. You can find hundreds of stores online that sell clothing at incredible bargain prices. And if a button falls off, if you don’t really like the fit, or if you wore it once and decided that it wasn’t your colour you send it to the op-shop. No problem right, it’s going to a good cause? The problem is, op-shops these days are absolutely inundated with clothing donations. And a large portion of this clothing is cheap fast-fashion, and anything that is not in good condition, or simply doesn’t sell, gets sent to landfill. Around 25% of donations that op-shops receive end up being sent to the tip. Sending clothing to landfill can contribute to the costs of the charity that is running the op-shop. It also contributes to our increasing problem with waste and pollution.

Why is clothing such a big problem for landfill? Clothing is not designed to break down easily, and a polyester dress or top could take up to a thousand years to break down in landfill. Even natural fibres such as cotton and wool take a long time to break down. Clothing is very difficult to recycle, so very few recycling programs target them.

So, what is the solution? Buy secondhand, of course! There are so many positives to op-shopping and buying pre-loved clothing. According to a YouGov survey, 24% of Australians have thrown out a garment after only one wear, so it’s quite likely that the clothing you buy at an op shop will be almost brand new. You can get a good quality outfit for the same price as a cheaply made fast-fashion outfit.

And there are so many places to buy second hand. You can shop online, on websites dedicated to selling secondhand designer fashion, or social media buy, sell and swap pages and auction sites like eBay. There are op-shops, where your money will go to support a charity, and also curated vintage shops that sell pre-loved vintage items. Here in Esperance, we are spoilt for choice when it comes to these kinds of shops. Op-shops includes the Red Cross on Dempster Street, the Anglican Church’s op-shop on Pink Lake Road (opposite the Esperance Primary School), and Esperance Care Service’s op-shop on Gilpin Street. Tommy Windich

Tommy Windich is a familiar name to many people in Esperance. As an Indigenous guide and tracker, he was vital to the success of John and Alexander Forrest’s expeditions exploring vast areas of Western Australia.

His Indigenous name was Kungaitch, but to Europeans, he was known by his English name Tommy Windich. He belonged to the Kokar people and spoke their language Njaggi Njaggi, although he was also fluent in other Indigenous languages. Tommy grew up in the Bunbury area, probably due to an epidemic that went through his tribe in his childhood. He learnt many essential bush skills growing up and also learnt how to ride and handle horses. In the early 1860s, Tommy began to work as a tracker for the police, and a native constable, and also began to help those seeking new land in the area around York. At the time, there were 35 Indigenous members of the police force in WA, employed as assistants and trackers, making up nearly a quarter of the police force of the colony.

In 1866, Tommy accompanied explorer Charles Hunt on an expedition east of York, heading towards the Kalgoorlie area, intent on opening up new grazing land and finding sources of water in the area. The expedition was cut short as Hunt became ill. Tommy was also involved in a hunt for Joseph Johns, a convict who escaped from prison multiple times. After one of these escapes, Johns was on the run for a month, and Tommy eventually helped the police track him down 37km east of York. The prison escapee Johns later became known as the bushranger Moondyne Joe. Tommy also helped the police track and capture some Indigenous men who were accused of killing settler Edward Clarkson.

During this capture, Tommy was speared in the arm.

By this time, Tommy was already on good terms with the Forrest family, who were living in Picton, near Bunbury. John and Alexander Forrest were among the ten children born to William and Margaret Forrest. Both John and Alexander became surveyors and explorers, undertaking many expeditions throughout WA. In 1869, due to Tommy’s reputation, John Forrest invited him to join his journey to search for Ludwig Leichardt’s missing exploration party. The expedition, made up of six men, went as far inland as present-day Laverton, without finding a trace of Leichhardt’s missing party, which was never found. Later the same year, the Governor of Western Australia, Frederick Weld, proposed an expedition to survey the route from SA to WA that the explorer Eyre had undertaken 30 years earlier. No one had made the same journey since then. The proposed expedition would survey the route taken, looking for suitable grazing land along the way. John and Alexander Forrest left in 1870, taking Tommy Windich, along with three other men. Along the way, the party spent a fortnight in Esperance, staying with the Dempsters.

They completed the journey from Perth to Adelaide, along the coast, in six months, and arrived in good health, without losing a single horse. The same journey had taken Eyre twelve months.

In 1871, Tommy accompanied Alexander Forrest on an expedition to explore the land to the east of the Hampton Plains, near present-day Brookton. In 1874, Tommy accompanied John and Alexander Forrest on another voyage. This time, they left Geraldton, travelling east through the centre of WA, aiming for

but Tommy Windich was always too reticent to speak publicly.

Tommy was given several small gifts in appreciation of his service, including a rifle engraved with his name, which became his treasured possession.

In 1876, Tommy began to work as a guide for the construction crew that was building the overland telegraph line in the Esperance area. He contracted pneumonia and was nursed by Esperance pioneer Caroline Hannett, but to no avail. Tommy died in Esperance in February 1876, at the age of thirty-six. At the time, explorers were considered to be celebrities, and Tommy was particularly well regarded because of his tracking and hunting skills, as well as his steady reliability. All three of the Perth newspapers of the time carried the news of his death. John and Alexander Forrest organised

for a headstone to be erected over his grave, which read, ‘He was an aboriginal native of Western Australia, of great intelligence and fidelity, who accompanied them on exploring expeditions into the interior of Australia, two of which were from Perth to Adelaide.’

John Forrest, who later became Premier of WA, named Windich Springs, located east of Meekatharra, after Tommy. Windich Street in Esperance is also named in his honour, as is a cultivar of Barley bred by the WA Department of Agriculture. The site of his grave is now known as the Tommy Windich Cultural Precinct, with a small native garden and replica headstone now marking the site of his grave. The original headstone, which was restored after it was vandalised in 1976, is now on display in the Esperance Museum.

the telegraph line that went from Darwin to Adelaide. The group accomplished the journey, although they struggled severely to find water along the way and narrowly escaped death on several occasions. Tommy’s exceptional skills as a hunter and tracker had saved the life of the party several times. They arrived in Adelaide after six months. The journey had not discovered any new land that was suitable for farming or grazing.

However, it was still a significant journey, being the first expedition to go through the centre of the state. The men arrived back in Perth to a hero’s welcome. There were banquets and receptions held in their honour. Tommy Windich, along with the other Indigenous tracker, Tommy Pierre, were both honoured for their roles in the dangerous journey. On occasion, both men were asked to speak,

If you are a lover of the Hawaiian variety then this plant is for you. It’s highly ornamental with a mauve tulip-like flowers and thin needle-like leaves which help it cope with dry conditions. The native hibiscus grows all over the south-east and is a favourite because of its long flowering season. It only grows to about 2 metres and is a wonderful background plant that takes up space without taking over.

It has a sibling called the Alyogyne huegelii which is less common, has a similar flower but more dense foliage and larger leaves. Both these Alyogynes would suit a cottage style or native garden.

Christmas R&R The festive season is upon us. It could be said that it is the most challenging time to practise mindfulness with the many demands on our time. I read about a study in America that found 61% of people reported feeling stressed around Christmas time. However, in the same study, it was found that 75% of people experience feelings of love. So it is with this encouraging news that we can find ways to cultivate this love into acts of kindness not only for others but ourselves. Consider what makes Christmas special to you and set an intention early.

It’s more important to spend some quality time with family and friends without feeling tired or stressed because often you’ve spent all your energy on shopping and cooking.

Giving from the heart might mean making your own gifts this year (if you are crafty enough) or baking a few treats. Just don’t bust a gut doing so. Once you made your intentions write them on a sticky note or as a reminder on your phone to keep yourself in check.

By being kind to yourself means you are calmer because you aren’t beating yourself up because you don’t have a gift for Aunt Betty. Which in turn means you can show Aunt Betty how you much you care by sitting with her calmly while you have that chat you know she loves to have.

It’s that time of year again, and if you’re anything like me, one day of celebrations is not enough. I’m that person that celebrates a whole birth month (one day is not long enough). Bring on Christmas, friends, family and all the yummy food. Finding balance can always be a little tricky, but this is particularly challenging over the festive season. A few days of indulging can be heavenly.

This is stretched out to work parties, overdue catchups, Christmas day, New Years celebrations and everything in between we can start to feel pretty average and sluggish.

I want to have fun but also wake up feeling fresh and ready for the day. We all know the tips and tricks such as eat dessert, but smaller portions, fill your plate with salad first, enjoy your cocktails but choose the low-calorie options… and these are all super helpful.

Sometimes we need a reminder of the magic we have at our front doorstep. Whether you’re slowly strolling or sprinting along, you’re already doing better than choosing nothing. Be kind to your body, listen to what it needs and don’t restrict yourself from the fun things this silly season.

Roast Peach, Herb & Goat Cheese Salad A PERFECT SIDE FOR CHRISSY LUNCH

For years my love of good food and cooking has meant my Christmases have been centred around what’s happening in the kitchen and what’s on the dining table. In the weeks leading up to the big day, I have endlessly scoured through my cookbooks, tested recipes and fastidiously planned my preparation schedule. A practice I have taken on each year with festive rigour and delight. But times are changing and my preparation-heavy, multicourse menus are out the window. With two little people around, this year I plan to spend more time out on the lawn under the sprinkler and less time in the kitchen peeling prawns. Food will always be a loved and celebrated part of our family’s Christmas, but this year it will be simple, delicious and allow for more time to be spent with loved ones.

4 yellow peaches, halved and destoned 2 tbsp brown sugar 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar 2 tbsp olive oil 100g rocket Handful each of green basil, purple basil & mint leaves 100g Meredith Dairy Goat Cheese (available at most supermarkets and grocers) Flaky sea salt and black pepper

• Always refresh your bread before serving.

Spray the crust with water and pop your loaf into a 200°C oven for 10-20 minutes. It’s ready when the crust is hard when you give it a tap.

Leave it to sit for half an hour, and you’ll have a beautiful, warm, crusty loaf again!

Method 1. Pre-heat the oven to 180°C (fan-forced).

2. Combine the peaches with the sugar, balsamic vinegar, olive oil, ½ a cup of water and pinch of flaky sea salt. Make sure the sugar is well dissolved.

3. Roast the peaches until charred and sticky. Keep an eye on them and add a little more water to the pan if needed (you don’t want the pan juices to burn). Set aside to cool and reserve the pan juices.

4. To serve, slice the peaches into segments and toss with the rocket, mint and basil. Arrange on a platter and top with crumbled goat cheese. Drizzle with olive oil and the reserved pan juices, and finish with flaky sea salt and black pepper.

This peach salad will accompany a glazed ham beautifully. Add to the table a generous bowl of crispy roast potatoes with herbed horseradish cream and a rocket, asparagus, parmesan and pear salad.

Serve with cranberry sauce, dijon mustard and of course a crusty loaf of Bread Local sourdough!
