Say goodbye to our fav season of Summer (dayzzzzz), and hello to our good old friend, Autumn. A time to embrace less wind and colder mornings as we pull out the ol’ uggies and contemplate whether it’s actually cold enough to get the fire going. Maybe not just yet.

The Yabby Classic is back on again this year after a year hiatus, and boy are we excited. The last event was our first and most definitely proved to be one for the calendar. Our mate, Kyza Presents, is organising this year’s live music. According to Kyza, there will be various local artists playing throughout the day with the popular band, Lazy Boys, rounding out in the evening. Make the most of this event, entry, as well as camping, are both free! See page 13 for finer details.

Just a reminder that International Women’s Day is coming up on March 8, a global event celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. We have included a (profoundly missed) crossword running on this theme on page 9. At Tide & Co, we shall be happily celebrating, as I notice all the shops around me (at the Museum Village) are in fact run solely by women.

With the help of his friend, beekeeper Vince Evans, Kevin cut the bees out of the wall and put them into a box.

This became his first hive and sparked off an interest that would become the thriving local business Esperance Honey.

Albany born and bred Kevin was originally a fisherman.

He never imagined that he would do anything for a career that didn’t involve the ocean. ‘I loved fishing, and I thought I’d always be a fisherman. I didn’t ever want to do anything else,’ explains Kevin. He moved to Esperance to be a part of the fishing industry here – and because he loved the local beaches and environment. When a virus came through the Esperance pilchard stocks, decimating the local pilchard industry, Kevin knew he had to do something else. With his friend Vince retiring, Kevin bought his stock of beehives. He then bought out another Kalgoorlie beekeeper, who was also retiring. He set up his hives on some farmland near the edge of Stokes National Park, and Esperance Honey was born.

Kevin started out selling his honey locally, in a few shops, and at the markets. Soon, he found he had too much honey for the Esperance market, so he started selling to buyers in Perth. Esperance Honey is now a thriving business that employs two full-time staff, Jeremy Black and Tyler Boon. ‘We have five kids in school between us,’ says Kevin, ‘and I think we make a significant contribution to the Esperance community.’ They are kept very busy taking the bees to different areas where there are flowering plants. The well-travelled bees are located in places as diverse as Balladonia, the Goldfields, Manjimup, Denmark, and Cascades. The different types of flowering plants strongly affect the taste of the honey, giving interest and variety to the end product. From Mallee fields to banksia, redgum, and many other types of native Australian plants, the honey is as distinctive and interesting as the landscapes that it comes from. And the pure, high-quality honey is very popular. These days, Kevin sells to private packers in Perth, as well as the wellknown Wescobee and Capilano honey brands. He even ships some honey to buyers in Adelaide.

As well as his honey, Kevin is particularly proud of his bee breeding program. Kevin is a member of the Bee Industry Council of Western Australia and is involved in the Better Bees breeding program. This program sees apiarists from around the state send their best bees to Rottnest Island

Alongside his passion for the bees, Kevin loves the unique and spectacular bushland that surrounds the Esperance area. He spends much of his time travelling in the bush, often camping out for days with the hives in different areas. Kevin has been saddened by the recent bushfires that have severely impacted the bushland around Esperance. He speaks sadly about seeing 200-to-300year-old trees burnt in the Great Western Woodlands, and of the terrible impact on native species of plants and on wildlife habitats. Kevin has also seen the effects of diseases such as dieback on native plants around the

native areas, and he holds concerns for the future of our bushland. Kevin is a passionate advocate for the protection and conservation of these incredible wild ecosystems. He hopes that with proper management, the bushland affected by the fires will be able to regenerate, returning to its former glory.

When the bees aren’t demanding his time and attention, Kevin can usually be found at the beach.

A keen surfer, he loves Esperance for the surf and the beaches and thinks Esperance is a great place to raise his kids. With local producers Yumi Wines now using Esperance Honey in production of Ambrosia, the business is continuing to make its impact on the local market. Kevin is proud of the high-quality local produce of Esperance Honey, and the contribution that the business makes to the local community. It certainly wasn’t the career path that Kevin thought he’d be taking, but he’s grateful for where it has led him. The work might be hard, but the rewards are very sweet.

to be reproduced. Kevin explains that Rottnest Island was chosen because they do not have any feral colonies, which helps them to keep the bees’ genetic strains pure.

Bees are selected for the breeding program based on productivity, temperament, and even colour. They also choose bees that have more hygienic behaviours in the hive, which gives them a better chance of fighting off diseases that they might encounter. The breeding program has resulted in significant improvements in Kevin’s stock, which are recognised by other beekeepers as being of particularly high quality. Due to the success of this program, Kevin now breeds bees for sale, selling stock to beekeepers around the state. The improved temperament of the bees also means he gets stung less these days, which is a bonus.

Switching Off For Earth Hour WORDS BY KARLI FLORISSON

Can turning off your lights for an hour help to save the earth? This is the message of Earth Hour. It may seem like a tiny step to take when there are so many huge, critical issues facing the earth these days. But the small, practical step of turning off non-essential electric lights, along with people all over the globe, can have the significant effect of raising awareness and keeping these issues at the forefront of our minds. From little things, big things grow, and this has undoubtedly been the case with Earth Hour.

Earth Hour is an Australian innovation which has spread rapidly to become a global event. Initially started by the Australian branch of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Earth Hour place on the last Saturday in March every year, and now attracts participants from all around the world. In 2007, after looking for ways to engage Australians with the issue of climate change, the WWF trialled a ‘lights off’ event in Sydney, supported by Sydney Mayor Clover Moore. Inspired by the Australian event, the city of San Francisco held a similar event in October of 2007. These events were combined in 2008, and by then Earth Hour had already spread to become a global movement, with 35 countries, and over 400 cities supporting the event.

Some have criticised this event, pointing out that the reduction in energy use worldwide for that one hour is insignificant when compared to the energy we use for the rest of the year. This criticism misses the point. Of course, many countries and cities report a substantial decrease in the amount of electricity used during Earth Hour, but this is not the primary goal. As WWF states, the purpose of Earth Hour is to raise awareness about environmental issues and to encourage people to make long term changes to their behaviour. As stated by the Earth Hour organisers, ‘Participation in Earth Hour symbolises a commitment to change beyond the hour.’

In conjunction with the Earth Hour event, WWF is also raising funds and awareness for different causes that relate to the Earth Hour theme. WWF’s Earth Hour Blue initiative aims to raise funds for various sustainable development projects around the world. This year, the Australian Earth Hour event is aiming to raise money for the charity Solar Buddy, which provides solar-powered lights for families living in remote areas in Papua New Guinea who don’t have access to Electricity.

• Register your participation at www.earthhour.org.au.

This helps the organisers of the event keep a track of who is involved.

• Talk to your kids, your neighbours, your friends, your hairdresser, and your social media followers about Earth Hour, and what they can do to reduce their own energy use.

• Turn off electrical appliances when they aren’t in use. Turn off lights when you’re not in the room, and consider other steps to reduce your energy use, such as buying energy-efficient light bulbs and appliances.

• Consider bigger changes if possible: installing solar panels on your house, and insulating roof and wall spaces will reduce your energy needs dramatically.

• Support the charity Solar Buddy. You can find more information on this charity, and how you can support them on the Earth Hour website, or at solarbuddy.org.

• Keep raising your voice! There is plenty more that we can do as individuals, and as a nation, to reduce our carbon footprint, and help to reduce the effects of climate change.

The World Wide Fund for Nature has a primary goal of conserving the world’s biological diversity. We know them as the organisation that fights to save endangered species of animals worldwide. As such, it might seem unusual that they would play such a large part in instituting an event such as Earth Hour. But with climate change threatening a large number of animal species worldwide, the WWF has a vast interest in helping to reduce the effects of climate change. The Centre for Biological Diversity estimates that as many as 30% to 50% of the planet’s species may be extinct by the year 2050.

An estimated one-quarter of mammals are at risk of extinction. As human activities drive habitat loss and climate change, we are irreversibly changing our planet. It’s not too late to change these dire statistics, though, and this call to action is what the WWF hopes to draw attention to. A healthier planet for the animals and plants that live here will also mean a healthier planet for us humans, which is also vitally important.

On taking the plunge, Jordy's career accelerated at an exceptional rate, highlighted by a European tour supporting Caravana Sun and regular performances throughout Australia. His debut single Blue Eyes is an absolutely cracking track setting the scene for a fantastic body of work to follow. I have seen a myriad of solo original acoustic artists perform, purveying an array of styles and motivations. Jordy's strength in the Live Arena lies in his uncanny ability to make his music wholly relatable to a broad audience. He achieves this through honest songwriting, lyrics that draw forth vivid imagery, and a genuine Australian whit and charisma that allows the audience to make his music their own. I am stoked to have Jordy return to Esperance to headline Bay Side Sound at the Esperance Bay Yacht Club on Sunday, March 29 supported by locals Leila Ben and Josh Adam. As is tradition following is a casual interview with the man himself.

I guess it wasn't so much of a jump initially. Rather a slow transition into getting more and more momentum with music until my work as an electrician had been put second to music. I got made redundant, got paid $104 and that was me as a sparky done (for then). That's when it sunk in–that I had to rely on emotional folk songs to get me through life.

My first transition into the music scene was coming home from four months away in Exmouth and Indonesia. As much as I went there to surf, I was around very creative people. I saw a friend in Exmouth play a gig. I saw people dancing and listening to his own songs, and I remember thinking, 'I could do this'. I got home from Indonesia, no money, no girlfriend. I thought maybe I could write her a song to win her back. Three and half years and 86 songs later still no luck, but I've been so fortunate where this musical road is taking me.

There was a lovely lady named Kelsie Miller, who ran backyard events. She gave me my first gig. I played my first show in Bunbury in front of 70 of the quietest and most appreciative audiences. I've been so fortunate to have her support from those early days and to give me that opportunity to tell stories behind my songs.

I moved to Scarborough in 2017, and I was so lucky to have housemates and so many new friends to keep me inspired and to support those real early shows.

Absolutely no idea! This was my first time in a studio to record any songs. So I had no idea what to expect. It was initially going to be an acoustic and violin song. But my producer, Andy Lawson, kept adding elements, making the song build and build. We got the kick drum sound-based of 'Chateau' By Angus and Julia Stone. We finished the session with piano. Lee Jones played this riff which we used and loved. At the end of the night, he played four notes during the outro. Myself and Andy started 'oooing' the notes. The next day we recorded the 'ooo's' with Keeley Connolly as back up vocals in the chorus. That's what topped the song off so perfectly, in my opinion. The song was definitely made what it is in the studio just trying things.

Hayley who works at O'Neill found the song online and asked me if they could use it for their summer range.

Hayley would become quite a big supporter of my songs and used my song 'Mother' as she documented herself surfing while she was pregnant, even surfing up until the day before her son was born.

I'm a massive fan of Leif Vollebekk. Songwriting, voice and piano are just irresistible. Jack Davies is often listened to. Mostly his solo stuff on Soundcloud. That's been a huge inspiration with the latest song ‘As You Go’.. And I'll always listen to an Angus Stone song any chance I can.

Fa vo u r ite me mo ry fro m a n Esp e ra nc e show?

Would have to be my first time playing a show with Michael Dunstan. It was our first stop on an Australian tour. It was amazing to be able to rock up, swim in the bluest water, head to the gig and have such a receptive audience. Then people were dancing and headbanging to folk music, I thought one girl stole a CD (she didn't), and everyone went jumping off the jetty naked. What a town!

I have a new single out March 20. 'She Came Back with Rainbows' is the new song and this is the song that I'll be touring with through Esperance and Australia. This is a song I'm super proud and excited to release. Even got the word from Mum–it's her fav, so must be doing something right I'm planning to record another two or three songs in June to release an EP later in the year.

Ocean Heroes is a charity set up by local West Australian surfers that aims to enhance the lives of those living with autism, through active involvement in the sport of surfing. They do absolutely amazing things for the people involved and their families.

We will be down at Twilight on March 29, and any volunteers are more than welcome to come down and help out. Let me tell you, it is the most rewarding day to see the froth, the high fives and smiles!

I got to get back to where it all started for me in mid-February catching TOOL at the Perth Arena on Valentool’s day. Honestly felt like half of Esperance was at the concert and for good reason. TOOL formed in the early 90s and are one of a few bands that through the cleverest of tactics have managed to stay relevant in a music industry that consumes music at an ever-increasing rate. Made even more admirable considering the act falls into an amalgamation of experimental, heavy rock, metalish realm.

For a little context, TOOL recently released their latest album ‘Fear Inoculum’ 13 years after their prior release, ‘10000 days’. Those years in between saw the establishment of digital streaming as the keyway music is found and consumed, all the while TOOL remained off the platform. Albeit until around one month before releasing Fear Inoculum where they uploaded their entire back catalogue. A stroke of genius really. This act itself created quite a stir amongst the international music community as TOOL’s music became available to a new generation just prior to the release of new material and extensive international touring. Their success is something to aspire to though something very few will achieve in the modern age of music. Now back to my desk to scan the internet for Rage Against The Machine’s tour announcement, don’t worry its coming.

It’s great to see local venues realising the value of live music to their establishments, Esperance is well regarded for its music scene all around. Lucky Bay Brewing has kicked off with regular casual acoustic performances with Friday’s developing as the go-to for a cruisy ale following the workweek. Sunday, March 8 sees touring act Sunday Lemonade perform at the venue following an extensive run of shows in WA highlighted by their appearance at The Nannup Music Festival.

On the Kyza Presents front, March is a diverse one. We have a classic Cannery Arts Centre open mic set to fall on Friday, March 13 from 5.30pm. Supported by local businesses Castletown Liquor, Liquor Barons and Bob & Jim’s General Store, entry is just $5 (kids under 16 free).

Attendees are welcome to BYO nibbles and beverages.

The following day, Saturday, March 14, I find myself in Grass Patch for the bi-annual Yabby Classic. Live tunes are on offer with Laura Petrie, Rachel Vibart and myself playing some chill acoustic tracks during the afternoon and Lazy Boys to kick into action after 7pm.

Twilight Markets return on Friday, March 27 at the Esperance Museum Village from 5.30pm with a local line-up of tunes. And the month will be rounded out by Bay Side Sounds at the Esperance Bay Yacht Club on Sunday, March 29. We have brilliant Perth artist Jordy Maxwell set to headline with locals Leila Ben and Josh Adam supporting. For a touch of the new, The Esperance Volleyball Association will be setting up a kids and adults game of V Ball out front on the lawn. Entry is $5 for over 18s and free for the kids. March is looking super fun.

The Grass Patch Yabby Classic is back on this year at the Grass Patch Community Oval.

Starting at 1pm and ending late in the night, it really is a fun day for all ages. Yabby races and competitions, market stalls, food vendors as well as live music throughout the whole day, continuing into the evening. This event is bi-annual so should not be missed. You’ll be waiting a while for the next one.

Esperance’s Hidden Heroes Esperance is a lucky town, one that is full of selfless and generous people.Many of our services are run by volunteers and people who go above and beyond in their work. Here at the Tide, we like to shine a light on some of the special people who make our town the beautiful place that it is.

S UE AND CHR IS M EYER ESPERAN C E C ARE SERVIC ES In 1996, Sue and Chris Meyer were involved in setting up a tiny organisation called Esperance Care Services in order to meet the needs that they could see in the Esperance community. Care Services started as an arm of the Esperance Christian Family church. Sue remembers setting up a card table at the Wood Street building for a desk, and a small op shop that had to be packed away every Sunday for church services. Over time, the fledgeling organisation has grown and evolved. In 2011, Care Services became an incorporated organisation in its own right. As the CEO and Service Manager, Chris and Sue are very proud to see how Care Services has stretched and expanded to continue meeting the needs of Esperance people.

Care Services has outgrown two different buildings and is now located on Gilpin Street. The op shop has grown to become a significant social enterprise, complete with a boutique and online sales, which helps to fund the benevolent side of the not for profit organisation. Last year, Care Services provided 1419 food hampers and emergency relief vouchers alongside a range of other community support. The organisation is staffed by 60 volunteers, and Care Services prides itself on being a place where people who may have barriers to work or volunteering are able to come and ‘have a go’ at being involved in meaningful work. Care Services helps many volunteers get work ready and go on to employment. The organisation has training in place for volunteers, and also runs the Regenerate program to help women return to the workforce. Care Services is continuing to find ways to reuse, recycle and repurpose the pre-loved goods that are donated to the service. Some good quality clothing gets sent to remote Indigenous communities or women’s refuges.

Sue is proud of the community hub that Care Services has become, from such humble beginnings. They are continuing to expand, adding services such as a children’s program that already has a waitlist, and events to help support young mums. As Sue says, ‘We want Care Services to be the right door for everyone to walk through.’ With the warmth and inclusiveness of the Esperance Care Services family apparent at all times, it is clear that they are achieving that goal.

Sue has been an environmental activist for thirty years, ever since reading David Suzuki’s book ‘Inventing The Future‘. Although originally from Esperance, Sue was living in Karratha at the time. She was inspired to change her own lifestyle and to encourage other people to do the same. Sue established the Home Environmental Network, hosting get-togethers, and producing flyers. This included a monthly newsletter that she wrote herself, providing tips on how to reduce people’s environmental impact in their own homes. Sue managed to do this while working a variety of jobs and raising two children with electrician husband, Arthur. When she moved back to Esperance, Sue continued to promote a low-impact lifestyle, through market stalls, brochures, talking to groups and eventually, social media. This grass-roots campaign encouraged many locals to take up recycling and composting, use less plastic, make their own household cleaning products, and plant trees. These are all initiatives that Sue practices in her own home. Sue is grateful to live in Esperance where a good recycling program is available, and more recently, joined the Community Waste Action Group. In amongst this busy lifestyle, Sue has been involved in Clean Up Australia days, tree planting and climate action. As Sue says, ‘These huge issues facing us all have been known about for decades, and I find it sad that young people have to be on the streets marching to force governments to take more action, as this should have been done well before we got to this point.’ With no plans for slowing down, Sue is likely to be found alongside the young people, inspiring them by her actions, and keeping up with their activism.

Marilyn moved to Esperance 56 years ago, with her husband John, just 3 weeks after they were married.

The newlyweds moved to a property in the Gibson Dalyup area and set about establishing a new farm.

Although Marilyn has trained as a Home Economics teacher, she kept busy helping out with the farm, raising children, and as an active member of the CWA. Many years later, after retiring from the farm, and after her husband, John passed away, Marilyn realised that she needed to keep connected with the community. She had always been interested in art, particularly public art. Marilyn had an idea that would both celebrate the legacy of her husband, and other ‘modern pioneers’, and would also beautify a particularly ugly wall. The result is a spectacular mural, celebrating the history of Esperance’s pioneer farmers, which you can alongside Dome on the National Australia Bank building.

As well as the mural project, Marilyn realised that she had the time to be involved in volunteering. She got involved with the Esperance Auxiliary Branch of the Royal Flying Doctor Service, where she has been an active and passionate member, and has been instrumental in another public art project, the new RFDS mural. Although she is turning 77 next month, Marilyn has no plans to slow down, and as she says, she is full of good ideas. ‘Esperance has been good to me, and now I want to be able to give back.’

In the early days of their time in the Esperance area, the Dempster brothers recalled a time where they did not receive any communication from ‘the outside world’ for 11 weary months. This isolation was difficult for the early settlers, and the ships that bought the mail could be unreliable. The solution was a telegraph line, which would connect Esperance and surrounding settlements with both Albany and Perth and the Eastern States.

By the end of the 1850s, the capital cities in the Eastern States, from Brisbane to Adelaide, were all connected by telegraph line. Western Australia was slower to take up the new technology, partly due to the incredibly long distances involved in connecting to the rest of the country. In 1860, the South Australian and Western Australian governments began discussions regarding a telegraph line connecting the two states.

This line took seventeen long years to eventuate and followed the route taken by the explorer Eyre along the coast from Adelaide to Albany, with the telegraph poles and wire being transported by sea to coastal points.

On New Year’s Day in 1875, the first of the poles for the telegraph line connecting Eucla to Albany erected in front of the Albany Post Office. This section of telegraph line would cover 1290 kilometres, through mostly unsettled land, and would take 7000 telegraph poles. This was a considerable feat for the newly formed WA government, which committed a budget of £30,000 to the project, at a time when the state’s entire yearly revenue was about £135,000. The SA government committed to building the line as far as Eucla.

In October of 1876, the first Station Master, fifteen-yearold George Stevens, arrived in Esperance to take charge of the Telegraph Station. The telegraph line became a significant employer for the area, with regular repeater stations required along the line. Messages were decoded and relayed by hand in Morse code.

This was not the only disaster to occur during the building of the line. While unloading telegraph poles from the schooner Twilight at Point Culver, one of the boatmen was pinned underneath a load of poles and drowned. In Esperance, the well-known Indigenous explorer Tommy Windich also became sick and died while working on the Telegraph line as a guide.

The original telegraph stations built at Esperance and Israelite Bay were four room weatherboard buildings.

These rooms served as an office, storeroom, and quarters for the station master, his assistants and the telegraph linesmen. Many of the early settlers of the Israelite Bay area were able to make some much-needed extra money by helping to build the telegraph line, or by working as linesmen on the finished project. The Ponton brothers and John Sharp helped to transport the wooden poles, and settler John Paul Brooks became the first linesman at the Israelite Bay Telegraph station. This station officially opened on December 5, 1876. The Eucla Telegraph Station was officially opened a year later, on December 9, 1877. The telegraph

line across the Nullarbor to Eucla was built using steel poles, which were much more durable, in contrast to the jarrah posts used by WA. Another difference was that in these pre-Federation days, WA used international Morse Code, while SA used American Morse Code. This meant that the telegraph operators sat opposite each other, with a wall between them representing the border between WA and SA. Each message had to be decoded and passed through a pigeon-hole in the border wall.

The importance of the telegraph line was demonstrated very quickly.

John Sharp, one of the pioneers who lived at Pine Hill, became very ill soon after the opening of the telegraph line. After finding him in a bad state, William Ponton rode to the Israelite Bay Telegraph station and sent a message to a doctor in Albany. The doctor diagnosed scurvy, and William rode back to John with fresh vegetables and lime juice from a ship which was docked in the bay. John made a quick recovery; his life undoubtedly saved by the telegraph line.

In 1895, the Esperance Post and Telegraph Office was built, where the current post office now stands.

The Norfolk Pine planted in front of the building still stands in the Esperance Post Office Square today. Unfortunately, the stone building was torn down in 1971. A beautiful stone building was also built at Israelite Bay to replace the weatherboard Telegraph Station.

At its peak, around 150 people were living in the Israelite Bay area. The Israelite Bay Telegraph

Station was closed in 1925 after a new telegraph line was built alongside the new Transcontinental Railway. The building sold to Henry Dimer in 1927, and he took the wood and tin from the roof to build shearers’ quarters. The stone ruins, in excellent condition, still stand at Israelite Bay today. A stone Telegraph Station was also built in Eucla, and it was reputedly the busiest telegraph station in Australia for a time. In the 1890s, a plague of rabbits in the area devastated the vegetation on the sand dunes at Eucla, causing huge drifts of sand to encroach on the town. The townsite was abandoned and rebuilt 4 kilometres north of the original site. The stone telegraph station, half-buried in sand, can still be visited today.

In 1912, Esperance was chosen to be a part of the Wireless Telegraph network. The stone Coastal Wireless Station was built on Dempster Head (which is sometimes known to locals as Wireless Hill). This wireless network helped to link Western Australia to the outside world. It was also very significant for communications with ships off the Australian coast.

It was used heavily during World War I when an army delegation was sent to Esperance to guard the communications tower. The original building still stands on Orr Street, although it is now disused and privately owned. Telegraph services continued to be used in Australia until the 1950s when the use of the telephone overtook telegrams in popularity. The last telegraph message to be sent by landline in Australia was in 1963.

Progress on the Telegraph line past Esperance was slow. Plans to build the next Telegraph Station at Point Culver were scrapped, and the safer harbour at Israelite Bay was chosen instead. Materials were transported to Israelite Bay using the schooner Mary Ann. In July 1876, the Mary Ann was anchored off Bellinger Island, close to Israelite Bay, during one of these trips. After a strong wind blew up overnight, the Mary Ann wrecked on Bellinger Island. Fortunately, the crew and cargo were all saved.

The Lepidosperma gladiatum is a keystone species in restoration because of its vigorous growth, sand-binding root system and clonal habit. These plants even respond to some levels of sand burial, so play an important role in stabilising exposed sand dunes.

The sword sedge can form expansive clumps over many metres by their spreading rhizomes. This is an excellent plant for the garden, full sun or in a shady position. It’s the hardiest plant you will ever grow! There is a smaller version called the Lepidosperma squamatum, and it is a mini-me to the Lepidosperma gladiatum. Both these guys seem to be flowering most of the year so an impressive landscaping species.

MIND + BODY Rejection = New Direction You’re going to fail, regardless, so you may as well do it your way! I’ve had a few of you reach out to me asking how to deal with set back and rejection in starting a side hustle/small business/profitable hobby. Thanks for asking these questions - it makes my day! As cliche as this sounds, I don’t think there’s such a thing as failure.

If you ‘fail’, you have learnt something from this process, and it means that there’s something else more suited to you (even if you don’t know it yet!). All my friends that are currently rocking their own businesses have had twice as many failures, been rejected and had plenty of setbacks.

We don’t often see these from the outside.

A bit of history before The Swan Effect existed as a yoga studio: • I studied sports science and wanted to become a strength and conditioning coach for elite sporting teams - so badly. Every team I approached either didn’t reply or said there were no vacancies.

• I spent days emailing every single corporate office in Perth CBD with wellness proposals and received zero replies.

• I worked 6-7 days a week. On my days off, I went to schools to try and incorporate wellness programs and never received a follow-up phone call or email, ever.

The point of this article is to let you know that it’s ok to get rejected and you will most definitely have setbacks.

No one tells you about the days that you’re doubting yourself and wondering what on earth you were thinking.

Keep doing that thing you love so much that you’d do it for free. You’ll learn from the ‘failures’ (that are in fact blessings in disguise) and eventually, you’ll find your own path. A mixture of passion, hard work (a lot of it) and intuition will guide you through creating your dream business/life.

Spinach & Ricotta Stuffed Pasta Shells A MOUTHER-WATERING, VEGETARIAN, THREE-CHEESE DISH. YUM. Serves 4 (6 shells per person)

Ingredients 24 jumbo pasta shells (plus a couple of extra to allow for breakages) Olive oil 1 brown onion, finely chopped 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped 250g fresh spinach leaves, roughly chopped 350g ricotta cheese

¼ cup sundried tomato, diced finely 1 cup mozzarella cheese ½ cup grated parmesan, plus extra for serving 1 large egg 1 tbsp fresh basil, finely chopped 500g Sugo (Italian pasta sauce, either homemade or store-bought) Salt & pepper

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 200C. 2. Cook the pasta so it is barely just al dente, about 10 minutes. Drain, toss through some olive oil and set aside.

3. Heat some olive oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook until it begins to brown, about a minute or two. Add the spinach and cook, stirring occasionally, until the leaves begin to wilt, about 4 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool.

4. In a mixing bowl, stir together the spinach mixture, sundried tomato, ricotta, mozzarella, parmesan and basil until thoroughly combined. Stir through lightly beaten egg and season with salt and pepper.

5. Pour the Sugo into the bottom of a shallow baking dish, big enough to fit the 24 pasta shells on one layer. Stuff each pasta shell with a generous amount of the spinach and ricotta mixture (about 1 heaped tablespoon), and place in the baking dish.

6. Bake covered with aluminium foil for 40 minutes.

Remove the foil and continue baking until the top begins to brown, about 15 minutes. Serve with a dusting of parmesan.

Tide tips: Use chilli based Sugo for an extra kick. Jumbo pasta shells, as well as the rest of the ingredients, can be purchased from Bob & Jim’s General Store. Best served with a fresh green salad.
