Following the long weekend comes one of Australia’s most important national occasions, ANZAC Day. This year it falls on a Thursday, with the dawn service starting at 6.00am at the Esperance Post Office. If you miss the dawn service, main service will be kicking off later in the morning at 11.00am at Haslams Carpark.

AUTUMN BRINGS A WIDE RANGE OF SEASONAL PRODUCE, AND AT TAYLOR ST QUARTERS, THEY’VE BEEN WORKING HARD TO DELIVER THEIR BRAND-SPANKING-NEW TAPAS MENU TO THE TABLE.

What you’ll see is a series of hearty and ‘manly but pretty’ dishes inspired by a bounty of fresh and local ingredients.

What are tapas, you say? Originating in Spain, restaurants began serving small, complimentary portions of food as coverings on top of the drinks they served, eventually evolving into its own, internationally-recognised style of cuisine. Today, tapas can refer to any small dish and can make the perfect share plate.

At TSQ, they’ve taken the style and feel of the traditional tapas experience and turned it into a way to enjoy a wide range of their delicious dishes in one meal, all while sharing with a couple of mates. In the hands of Chef Dean, plates include potato gnocchi with charred broccoli pesto and roast beetroot, rare Harvey beef with dried cherry tomato, shaved pecorino and lemon dukkha, patatas bravas with saffron aioli and smoked bacon crumb as well as jazzed-up old favourites like corn, jalapeno and cheddar croquettes and coconut and lime ceviche.

Each dish is morish and full of flavour, no doubt you’ll be coming back for more.

Tapas suit the casual style of TSQ, where regulars come to enjoy a pint on Sundays while listening to live acoustics of local musos. With this smaller-sized-dish menu, it’s the perfect option for an after work drink or a shared dinner with friends. Hot tip: get one of everything.

Esperance people living in Perth come home, Perth people who wish they lived in Esperance come to visit, and those of us who are already down here brace ourselves for a weekend of fun and festivity. But just in case you’re not quite sure what’s on offer, here is your weekend itinerary.

I have lived in Esperance for most of my life, and I regularly go exploring, hiking, and camping, but I still find places to visit that I’ve never been to before. This should not be surprising, given the absolute wealth of untouched beauty that surrounds Esperance.

We truly do live in a place unlike any other! With national parks, nature reserves, and off-thebeaten-track locations surrounding us on all sides, we are spoilt for choice. Here are some of the world-class destinations that are within driving distance of Esperance.

Peak Charles National Park

Closest to Esperance, the Cape Le Grand National Park is famous for white sand so fine that it squeaks, kangaroos on the beaches, and spectacular views. Established in 1966, Cape Le Grand National Park is home to bandicoots, pygmy honey possums and western grey kangaroos, as well as a rich variety of wildflowers. The beaches are the main attraction, but you can also climb Frenchman’s Peak, have a coffee at the Lucky Bean Café right on the beach, or try one of the coastal walk trails. While everyone has their own favourite beach in the park, Lucky Bay is certainly unmissable. The beaches are all accessible by 2WD, and there are camping facilities available.

Peak Charles National Park is located in the Great Western Woodlands, which is an area of woodlands north of Esperance that covers almost 16 million hectares. The Great Western Woodlands is the largest area of intact temperate woodlands in the world and is home to more than 3,500 species of plants. The area also contains many species of mammals, reptiles, frogs and birds, with new species of plants and animals still being discovered.

Cape Arid National Park

Peak Charles National Park is located 170 km north west of Esperance and features Peak Charles, 500 metres high, and the neighbouring Peak Eleanora. There is a moderate hiking trail up Peak Charles, and the area also attracts experienced climbers for more advanced climbs. In the spring, there are many wildflowers to be seen in the area, including more than 30 species of orchid.

This huge 2794 square kilometre national park is located 120 km east of Esperance and extends from the coast inland to Mt Ragged. Cape Arid National Park is rich in biodiversity and is home to 160 bird species, several of which are endangered or threatened. Another feature is the Russell Range, which is primarily made of quartzite, and reaches almost 600 metres above sea level at its highest point, Tower Peak. Cape Arid National Park stretches east to the Nuytsland Nature Reserve, creating an almost unbroken conservation area reaching to the South Australian border.

There are several camping areas in the park, and some sections are accessible by 2WD, but the park is considered to be remote, so travellers to the area should be experienced and self-sufficient. Check out the historical ruins at Pine Hill, or the picturesque Tagon Coastal Walk. In late winter and spring, migrating whales can often be seen here close to the coast.

Stokes National Park Located 80 km west of Esperance, Stokes National Park features the Stokes Inlet estuary, an area rich in biodiversity.

The Inlet is popular for fishing and canoeing, and there is also abundant birdlife for bird watchers. Stokes Inlet is accessible by 2WD, but the rest of the park is 4WD only. Camping areas include Benwenerup campground on the banks of the inlet, Skippy Rock or Fanny Cove. One of the highlights of the park is wandering among the historical ruins at Moir’s Homestead, first established in 1873.

Fitzgerald River National Park Just a little further from Esperance, the Fitzgerald River National Park lies between Hopetoun and Bremer Bay. It is one of the largest and most botanically significant national parks in Australia, with nearly twenty per cent of WA’s flora species and over 60 species of plant that are not found anywhere else in the world. There are also many birds and animals found in the park, including several very rare or threatened species such as the Dibbler and the Tammar Wallaby. The Barren Mountain Range, the Fitzgerald River and the dramatic coastline make this park a unique and stunningly beautiful destination. Hamersley Drive is a sealed road that takes in most of the scenic spots, and there are several campgrounds available.

Camping and day trip fees apply to most of these parks. Of course, adventurers should take all of the usual precautions such as telling someone where they are going and taking plenty of water.

WA’S Finest has been a stellar series, with fantastic attendance at both the workshops and the live events of Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. I’m amazed by how quickly the weekends have passed and I’d like to give thanks to all musicians, Cannery Staff and volunteers who have helped the events to become a reality.

Our final weekend is set to be an absolute cracker.

Tracey Barnett kicks the weekend off with a workshop focused on press kits and online presence. Tracey took out the WAMS 2018 Best Regional Act, and with this in mind, it makes so much sense for her workshop and performance to fall on the series finale. The workshop will be held from 2-3pm on Saturday April 13th at the Cannery Arts Centre, open to all ages and free to attend. For further details jump onto www. kyzapresents.com. As WA’S Finest began to take shape, I came to the realisation that the date for the series finale was already locked down, with Tracey Barnett being the perfect act to join the line-up for American Blues Legend Eugene Hideaway Bridges. Eugene returns to Esperance through the collaborative work of The Cannery Arts Centre, Cole Bishop and KyzaPresents to perform a night of classic blues in The Cannery Main Gallery on Saturday April 13th from 6pm.

Eugene first toured Australia 20 years ago and has regularly been returning since, selling out multiple shows across the country. Eugene’s connection to the classic bluesmen of old shines through in his performances, and he often dedicates parts of his shows to the bluesmen who influenced him, such as B.B King and Sam Cooke. In 2017, The US Jus’ Blues Music Foundation announced that Eugene Hideaway Bridges was to be their 2017 honoree for the Albert King Lifetime Award, “The Lucy Award”, for his outstanding contribution toward keeping the style of traditional blues alive.

I’m so excited for this performance, and with nothing but ecstatic feedback from locals regarding Eugene’s sets at The Blues At Bridgetown, I have every reason to be. Local lads Car Park Social, comprising of Paul Ricciardo and Daniel Senior, join the lineup along with classic local singersongwriter Rachel Vibart. With food available for purchase and the Cannery bar open, the night can’t get any better.

Laurence Sinclair was born in 1854 in the Shetland Isles of Scotland, the eldest son of Thomas and Mary Sinclair. The family migrated to Australia in 1863, arriving in Fremantle in December. They already had five children and another two were born in Australia, although a daughter born in Fremantle did not survive infancy. In 1864, Thomas Sinclair started working as a prison warden at Fremantle jail. Thomas died in 1867, leaving Mary to care for her six remaining children.

In 1874, Laurence ‘Laurie’ Sinclair started working for the Dempster family as a shepherd on their property called Buckland, located just outside Northam. While working for the Dempsters, Laurie travelled several times between Buckland and the Dempsters’ newly established Esperance property. It was here in Esperance that Laurie met his future wife, Julia Playle.

Julia had been sent to Esperance after an illicit affair left her pregnant with William Dempster’s child. Her daughter Selina Playle was born in 1877. Little is known about Julia’s background. She was a servant girl in the Buckland homestead and was not considered to be ‘respectable’ enough for William Dempster, who married Maude Sweeting in 1878. In the same year, Julia and Selina were sent to Esperance to live with William’s brother Andrew and his family. Julia felt let down by William and went to a magistrate, who advised her to take up proceedings against him. At the Esperance settlement, Julia met Laurie Sinclair.

The two were married in 1879, and Laurie took Selina as his own child.

Laurie, Julia, and baby Selina left Esperance and headed to South Australia, where Laurie worked as a farm labourer. Julia had five more children, Jessie, Laurence, Earnest, Julia, and Bertie, who died as an infant. In 1889, the family left South Australia, and travelled back to Esperance, travelling by boat to Albany, then overland to Esperance. Laurie returned to work for the Dempsters, and Julia had three more children, Mary, Cecilia, and Leslie.

In the meantime, Laurie’s brother James had also come to Esperance working for the Post and Telegraph Department. James had started working as a messenger boy for the department in Guildford when he was 13 years old, and he was first transferred to Bremer Bay, and then to Esperance in 1878. Eventually, James became the Telegraph Station Master in Esperance.

In 1894, as the gold rush was beginning, Laurie was carting goods to Coolgardie. On his return, he went to see his brother George, who was prospecting in the Dundas area. Laurie tethered his horse, who was called ‘Hardy Norseman’, and discovered in the morning that the horse had hoofed at the ground and unearthed a piece of gold-bearing quartz.

There are several variations of this story that have been told over the years, but the

Laurie and his partners George and Jack sold their claim in 1895 for six thousand pounds, plus shares in the company that bought it.

Laurie then began speculating on building houses in Esperance, expecting the town to boom when the railway to the goldfields in Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie went through.

When the railway – and the boom – failed to eventuate, Laurie fell on hard times and had to sell the house that he had built. His daughter Cecilia also stated, ‘…after the gold find, Mr

Sinclair, a very good-hearted man, found many new-found friends, and finance from the gold find was soon depleted.’ Laurie went back to working for the Dempsters. He was known as an excellent stockman.

In 1923, Laurie’s son Laurence Jr. was riding a horse at the Esperance racetrack when the horse tried to jump the rails and fell on him.

Laurence Jr. was 39 years old. Although his mother Julia nursed him for nine days, Laurence Jr. died from his injuries. Laurie was devastated by his son’s death, and five weeks later, he also died. While his sadness at the loss of his son may have contributed, Laurie also had cancer, which was ultimately the cause of his death. His wife Julia, Esperance’s first midwife, remained in the area and became a well-loved and respected member of the community. She died in 1939 and was buried next to Laurie in the Esperance Cemetery. Laurie and Julia’s descendants still live in Esperance to this day, and in the 1990s, the suburb ‘Sinclair’ was named after the family.

end result was that Laurie, together with his brother George and their friend Jack Alsopp, found a rich seam of gold in the area. They registered a claim and began mining the gold.

When the town of Norseman was established in 1895 for the miners who gathered there, it was named after Sinclair’s horse. The Sinclairs were proud of their Shetland heritage and considered themselves to be of Viking or Norse ancestry, hence the horse’s name. Laurie had some of the first gold from the claim made into a brooch for his wife, which is now on display in the Kalgoorlie-Boulder museum.

It is a product that lasts for thousands of years, and according to the Department of Environment and Energy, only 14% of the plastic that we use in Australia is recycled. That leaves a lot of plastic to go to landfill, or even worse, into our waterways or oceans. Worldwide, about 8 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean every year, causing harm to fish and other sea creatures. There are several areas in the ocean where the plastic collects in large floating plastic ‘islands’. One of these is the size of Texas! It is estimated that by 2050, there will be more plastic by weight than fish in the sea.

We’ve probably all seen the harm that plastic can cause to animals and birds who eat or get stuck in it. Plastic also harms people – toxic chemicals can leach from it, ending up in our food chain and water supplies. These chemicals cause long-term harm to our health. Despite increasing awareness, our plastic use is only continuing to increase.

It’s easy to feel quite overwhelmed by the amount of plastic we use, but there are some small and easy changes that you can make that have a big impact. Let’s give single-use plastic the flick.

RIP plastic bags

You are what you eat

Get some good reusable shopping bags, and keep them in your car or your bag. You can even buy lightweight reusable bags for fruit and veggies, so you don’t have to use plastic produce bags for your apples and potatoes.

Make your own rather than buying processed goods.

Frozen meals, packaged biscuits and treats, and many other packaged items in the supermarket have single-use packaging galore. Make your dinner from scratch, whip up a batch of homemade cookies, and amaze your friends while also saving money and the environment.

Say no to straws

Say no to extra packaging Amazingly, some major supermarkets try to sell fruit and veggies that are already naturally packaged in their own peel – covered in additional plastic wrap! This is a really good reason to shop at independent grocers like BJ’s Fruit & Veg, where minimal plastic packaging is used. If enough of us send a message to the big retailers by refusing to buy their plastic wrapped goods, then they will have to change their policies.

Hol liday mode Recently I was in a bit of a slump. Work had been full, and I was tired all the time. Mrs Merve was equally busy, and there didn’t appear to be any space left for a bit of RNR. A few of my friends started commenting that I just didn’t seem my old self as I was not playing golf and turned down the offer to go fishing with my best mate in his new boat. Mrs Merve and the kids told me I was grumpy and hogging the Netflix.

To be fair, I did have a few worries. A new boss who decided I wasn’t his favourite employee (which was now making me wonder why I didn’t take up the offer of a much better job offered to me last year).

A daughter who although at 15, thinks she’s 22 and can do what she wants. My neighbour who keeps dobbing me into the ranger because the daughter’s cat keeps escaping over the fence into his yard and upsetting his dog. ‘That’s it!’ I thought, ‘I’m going to take a break’. Leave the kids with the parents so Mrs Merve and I can have a week off. A holiday! She jumped at the chance, and before I knew it, she had organised a week in Bali.

Off we go to a lovely resort, and there I park myself under the umbrella on a sun lounge with a drink in hand.

Ahh! This is the life. After an hour, something unexpected occurred. I found my mind not in Bali but at home thinking about that guy next door and how unneighbourly he was and after I had lent him my whipper snipper on more than one occasion. Before we know it, I’m thinking about the new boss and how he loves giving me the worst jobs–how I should have taken that job last year and how stupid I am for not taking it. I’m thinking about the kids and hoping that the 15-year-old-going-on-22 is not acting up for her grandparents.

I put down my drink and dive into the pool and float on my back looking at the surrounding palm trees and remind myself that wherever you go, you have to take yourself with you. With this enlightening thought, I told my worrywart self that it was not invited on this holiday.

With that taken care of, I was able to ask my calm and relaxed self to join me.

If you are planning a holiday be very wary of who you are taking with you. Leave that worry wart behind because it is certain to ruin any good times.

Eucalyptus kruseana (Bookleaf mallee)

There are approximately 800 different species of Eucalyptus and about half of them are known as mallees. Instead of a single trunk, mallees have many stems that grow from a large bulbous woody structure called a lignotuber, or mallee root.

Mallee roots, of course, are famous for being the king of the firewood world as they are very hard and burn for a long time.

Mallees are generally small, usually under 10 metres so perfect for in a garden or as a street tree or even in a pot.

Some favourites are Eucalyptus pleurocarpa, commonly known as Tallerack or blue mallee. It has amazing thick leathery grey leaves with lemon coloured flowers and can be pruned to keep nice and compact otherwise it can get a bit unruly.

Eucalyptus tetraptera, or four-winged mallees, is another local tree that has enormous green leaves and a red flower that is overshadowed by its large bright square red/pink seed capsules, which remain on the plant for up to a year.

A new one to my list of favourites is the Eucalyptus kruseana or bookleaf mallee. This tree has to be seen to be believed, it is truly amazing. I recently discovered it at Kings Park, happily growing with other natives and fitted perfectly in the garden setting.

The remarkable features of this plant are its rounded grey leaves and yellow flowers that protrude from the stems. Its habitat is the Goldfields but it is grown as an ornamental tree all over, so well worth a try. Last, but not least, the Euclalyptus preissaina, or bell fruited mallee, has a rounded grey/green leaf with a beautiful yellow flower followed by bell-shaped gumnuts. This tree is not tall but can be sprawling, and like the others mentioned, can be hard pruned even to the base to encourage vigorous regrowth.

The Language Of News Concerning The Environment Being a pretty keen enviro it bothers me the way issues about the environment are being reported in The West, WA’s most prominent newspaper. Although this is nothing new, I feel like it is something many people remain blissfully unaware of. It’s a level of manipulation of core values that seeps its way into our collective psyche, and it happens week in week out.

Disclaimer: I am not a Labor fan or voter. This article works for the point I’m trying to make, and The West is particularly harsh on Labor policy.

I want to take this time to talk about a series of articles recently published in The West. It’s election time, and The West represents big business. So, of course, we can expect any climate policies to come under intense scrutiny by the non-expert journalists and their corporate sponsors.

Let’s take the header “ALP to cut carbon but spare industry (just don’t ask how)”–already the cards are stacked in the corporate favour. The header confirms for the reader the myth that climate policy and economic policy cannot work together. They dismiss the idea you can have a green economy or that renewables can be profitable so that before you even start reading the concept of a progressive clean energy economy is dressed up as pure fantasy not up for debate or discussion. It’s the economy vs the environment. Even though the article is about emission cuts, the general idea is about making everyone think that clean energy is expensive garbage so that policymakers can set lower targets for businesses to follow.

Now let’s go into the first paragraph. “Bill Shorten is promising to cut carbon emissions without crippling Australia’s biggest polluters, but refusing to say how they will be protected”. This line is disturbing, and when I talk about manipulation of core values, this is what I’m on about. When did the right thing become about 'protecting' polluters? We grew up learning pollution was a bad thing while watching Captain Planet and Fern Gully. When did protecting polluters become essential? Also, why is their case the only one in the spotlight? They do not mention the very scientific reasons for the carbon emission cuts in the first place. The only consequences the article mentions are economic, not environmental. Because the economy always comes first and the west doesn’t want to consider the ecological consequences.

Going into the continued page 8 article, it gets more slippery. “Labor tries to have it both ways”–the title doesn’t exactly spell 'confidence' does it. It doesn’t put much faith in the policy announced. Again it re-enforces the idea that economy and environment can’t get along. Now The West doesn’t want to discourage readers. It doesn’t want to blatantly flog the idea that environmental politics are pointless. It needs to be seen as the fair and balanced guardians of information in WA. However, that doesn’t mean comprising the interests of their sponsors. The article starts by suggesting that Labor is 'refusing' to detail how they will 'protect' the 'Nations 250 polluters' as if these businesses have some sort of national badge of honour that gives them a free pass for pollution because of their contribution to our great nation. Also, the article suggests if something were to interrupt their business model our island home would experience an economic meltdown and chaos will ensue.

Further, while Labor’s target of 45% carbon emission cut is modest by some standards, the article makes out like this change is the biggest thing to happen to the nation since Captain Cook arrived! How will they achieve this seemingly impossible task that many first world nations have already completed without compromising our economy? There are realworld examples of other countries achieving the same goals and not one of them is brought up. Instead, the article is only concerned with the theorised potential economic consequences with no evidence to back those claims. Because again the idea that we can cut emissions and grow the economy at the same time isn’t up for discussions, not in The West anyway.

Our way of life is under fire not from the greenies or the immigrants but the people in charge of our media and their sponsors–that our cultural identity is being used against us in a way that divides us into economy vs the environment. The truth is that Australia is and always has been an environmental economy because we make a large amount of money from the environment and our cultural identity comes from our environment. If we don’t take steps to protect our natural resources, will we discover the opposite is true? That the economy and the environment where interconnected the entire time? Both will suffer dramatically if we do not change and we can already see it happening across the country.

Our jobs. Providing no details to exactly how many jobs are on the line the protection of these jobs is essential enough to be mentioned not once but twice just subtly enough to get you thinking about all your coal mining mates. What is interesting about this is that they give details on Labor policy around solar batteries, the electric car industry and the buying of carbon credits, all of which could provide jobs.

However, there is no mention of these new jobs. The only jobs that matter belongs to the current powers of industry, you know those big bad polluters we need to 'protect' and whose approval we so desperately need for our environmental policy.

The entire article is a trick designed to give you the feeling of that you're just reading some good old fashion balanced political reporting. When that couldn’t even be further from the truth. The West doesn’t care if you vote Labor or Liberal (preferably liberal), all they need to do to keep their sponsors happy is continue the debate. To keep us behind the curb when it comes to the environment. To make people think that we are incapable of making any meaningful change, and that to do so would be risking catastrophic economic meltdown and collapse that would destroy our Australian way of life. I don’t know about you, but I don’t consider it very 'Australian' to keep protecting polluters. I don’t think it’s very 'Australian' to bury our heads in the sand when it comes to facing world issues. I don’t think it’s very 'Australian' to keep rewarding bad behaviour (or maybe it is?).

Vegetable oil 600g firm tofu, cut into 3cm cubes 1 cup cornflour 4 spring onions, thinly sliced 4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced 2 golden shallots, thinly sliced 1 tbsp finely grated ginger 40g chilli jam 1½ tbsp light soy sauce 1 tbsp kecap manis 1 tsp ground Sichuan pepper Steamed Asian greens of your choice

1. Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Dust tofu in cornflour, shaking off excess.

Deep-fry tofu in batches (careful, hot oil may spit), turning occasionally, until golden (3-4 minutes). Drain on paper towels.
