Striking For Their Future STUDENTS OF ESPERANCE STRIKE FOR CLIMATE ACTION

In August of 2018, an unknown fifteen-year-old school girl by the name of Greta Thunberg began spending her school days outside of the Swedish Parliament, holding a sign saying ‘School Strike for Climate’. Greta was calling for the Government to take urgent action on addressing climate change.

Before long, she was joined by other school students who organised similar protests in their own communities, under the name ‘Fridays for Future’. In just over a year, this movement has gained worldwide momentum, and Greta Thunberg has become a household name. On 20 September 2019, an estimated 4 million people joined in strikes and protests around the world, including 300,000 in Australia. Here in Esperance, around 250 people joined the rally, including many children who left school to attend. The local rally was organised by an informal group of passionate people called the Esperance Climate Action group, who were inspired to stand in solidarity with young people striking all around the world. I was proud to be a part of that group.

Esperance Climate Action group has written a number of letters to local MPs, the Esperance Shire, and to WA ministers outlining their concerns and asking them to take action on relevant issues.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has stated that he doesn’t want young people to experience ‘needless anxiety’ about climate change.

While this concern for the mental health of our young people may be admirable, it does not take into account that young people are going to experience the greatest impact of our changing climate.

Taking action by joining a strike or a rally, lobbying politicians, and becoming involved with a group of like-minded people can help young people to feel empowered.

Young people have the right to help to determine what kind of world they will inherit. While it may seem that one person can’t do much to influence the future of our world, Greta Thunberg’s example

shows just how much is possible.

Recently, the now 16-year-old addressed world leaders at the 2019 UN Climate Action Summit in New York, in an impassioned speech that has been seen by millions of people around the world. Many other young activists have also become prominent in the movement. Together with all of the people that joined the rallies around the world, there is hope that these numbers will influence the actions of leaders and politicians, as well as the everyday actions of individuals.

Change may be slower than we hope sometimes, but it is certainly coming.

While these numbers may be impressive, what good can a rally do? The organisers of the global School Strike hope that the rally will bring awareness to the cause, which will put pressure on our politicians to take decisive action on reducing carbon emissions. Here in Esperance, those who joined the rally also hoped to draw attention to the fact that urgent action is needed on climate change locally.

Some of the group’s goals include having a 100 per cent renewable energy target for Esperance, achievable through supporting the Esperance Community Power Project. The group would also like to see WA have a renewable energy target, as we are currently the only state without one. Other goals include a ban on drilling for oil in the Great Australian Bight, an incredibly biodiverse place with many rare and unique species of marine life, and seeing the local Shire take action on reducing emissions. As well as the rally, the

Cloud 11 Coffee + Tea is a peaceful sanctuary, tucked away behind the Esperance Express stationery shop in the Esperance Business Centre. Inside the zen-like room, with quirky furnishings and sleek concrete floors, the outside world falls away. The lush indoor plants - spilling from pots and vases, hanging on the walls and decorating the tabletops - create a welcoming, jungle-like feel. The scents of coffee and freshly ground chai spices fill the air, luring customers away from their everyday cares.

Cloud 11 is the creation of Glen and Mitsuko Rollond. The shop combines their separate passions.

Glen has been roasting coffee locally since 2017, with his Upward Spiral coffee popular with coffee connoisseurs. Mitsuko is a pottery artist, and she has put her talents to use in the shop making cups, vases, and pots. The result is a unique and beautiful space, serving delicious coffee. Glen and Mitsuko opened the shop with very little fanfare, but it has quickly become very busy.

Mitsuko developed her skills as a pottery artist here in Australia.

Her pottery shows the Japanese influence of Mitsuko’s roots, and what started as a hobby turned into a passion. Locals will recognise Mitsuko’s designs, as she has been selling her pottery locally under her label Mintblue Sea. Mitsuko has been busy making cups, plates, and other unique pottery pieces for the new shop.

Among the challenges of making a large number of cups that all hold exactly the same volume, Mitsuko has also been selecting a range of teas and making her own blend of chai from scratch.

The space that Glen and Mitsuko selected for their new shop used to be the home of the Esperance Express’s printing press. The large space is perfect for what the couple intends to be a multipurpose shop. They have plans to move the coffee roaster into the new store, so they can roast their coffee blends on site. As the roaster weighs half a tonne, this will be quite an undertaking.

Mitsuko also has plans to move her pottery studio on site. In the

meantime, all of the couple’s time and energy has gone into creating a beautiful and unique space for Cloud 11 Coffee + Tea. The shop has been a collaborative effort, with Tanya Jenkyn of B&M’s Secret Garden sourcing the beautiful range of indoor plants that fill the shop. Glen and Mitsuko are also working with a local baker who is making a range of cakes onsite that complement the coffee and tea selection perfectly. Alongside the cakes, they are also offering French pastries and a range of toasted sandwiches for lunch.

The buzz that is already surrounding Cloud 11 is a testament to the hard work and passion that Glen and Mitsuko have put into their shop. As Glen says, “The response that we’ve had so far has been amazing.” Whether they are on the hunt for the perfect coffee, looking for some unique handmade pottery, or just after a lovely place to enjoy morning tea, visitors to the shop are sure to be delighted.

Glen Rollond grew up in Esperance.

After training as an electrician and travelling away for a while, Glen met and married Mitsuko.

The two returned to Esperance ten years ago. Glen was still working as an electrician but after a health scare, he realised he wasn’t enjoying his work at all. “I wanted to do something I really cared about,” he said. Glen undertook a coffee roasting course in Melbourne with a professional coffee roaster named Anne Cooper, or ‘Roastress Coops’. Anne then came to Esperance to help Glen set up his professional quality coffee roaster, and Upward Spiral Coffee was born. Glen has been selling his coffee through Bob and Jim’s General Store and has also spent many of his Sunday mornings making coffees at the markets. “I discovered that I quite like making coffees for people,” he said.

Tammy Andrews’ Home Front Exhibition

When Tammy Andrews started working on her seventh solo art exhibition, she returned to a favourite theme. Tammy loves painting interiors: warm, moody, or cosy scenes from home and family. This love began to shape the exhibition, and soon a clear theme emerged: ‘Home Front – Paintings we live in and other warm ideas.’ The result is a completely unique exhibition, which Tammy describes as an ‘open studio’ in her own home. Tammy has been working on this exhibition all year, and the resulting paintings are full of restrained emotion. The simple everyday scenes are richly detailed and filled with warm colours. The paintings fill the viewer with a sense of nostalgia for a place that seems really familiar and very much like home.

Three years ago, Tammy and Warren bought D & R Photographics. The photography and printing business was the perfect place to combine Warren’s framing business, and Tammy’s Baxter and Maree art gallery. Tammy has continued to paint and exhibit her work. Locals will be familiar with her work, some of which depicts local streetscapes, historical scenes, and wildflowers. Tammy has also branched out into textiles, with some of her designs printed on fabrics. In keeping with the ‘Home Front’ theme, some of these textiles will be on display in the upcoming exhibition, made into cushions, scarves, and even drapes. Tammy has also hand-painted lamps, which will feature in the exhibition.

In 1999, Tammy and her husband Warren established the Hellfire Gallery, 30 kilometres east of Esperance towards the Cape Le Grand National Park. This beautiful gallery, garden and amphitheatre was a labour of love created by the couple. Tammy held her first solo exhibition at the Hellfire Gallery in 2000. The gallery hosted many more exhibitions, as well as many visitors, weddings, concerts, and even the West Australian Symphony Orchestra for an unforgettable event in the beautiful gardens. After running the gallery for nine years, Tammy and Warren sold the beautiful property. They moved into Esperance and purchased the Old Courthouse Framers. Tammy opened the art gallery, Baxter and Maree. As well as exhibiting her own work at Baxter and Maree, Tammy’s work was shown in other galleries around the state. She has had solo exhibitions at the Gadfly Gallery in Dalkeith, and at Vancouver Arts Centre in Albany.

Tammy started painting seriously when she was 16 years old, and newly enrolled in a fine arts course with Curtin University in their Esperance campus. “Back then, Curtin ran a fine arts course out of the Cannery Arts Centre.

They used the whole venue, and we studied everything from printmaking to pottery.” Tammy was distracted by a young man, and art took a back seat to marriage and child-raising for a period of time. In her early twenties, Tammy went back to Curtin, still at the Esperance campus, and finished her course, gaining valuable skills and experience.

As Tammy says, “Having an exhibition is like writing a book and putting it together.” The upcoming open studio exhibition is like reading a book that has a strong sense of familiarity, yet still surprises and delights with the vibrant colours and peaceful scenes. The secret to Tammy’s prolific body of work is the consistency and dedication that she brings to her art. “I believe that you have to show up at the easel every day, and work. Painting is like any trade, it takes time to develop skills. I don’t believe in waiting around for inspiration to strike me, I get into the studio and work every day, Monday to Friday.” The exhibition will showcase thirty new works, including some show-stopping large pieces, some smaller paintings, and some charcoal pieces.

The vibrant paintings fit perfectly into Tammy’s peaceful home studio, and the result is truly not to be missed.

THE BRIDGE One of the more challenging aspects of my work, particularly for the ticketed events I run, is developing overall event concepts. A great deal of consideration goes into ensuring events are unique with strong points of variation between each, in regards to the lineup (style of music), target audience and overall event outlook. September 7 saw The Southern River band head to Esperance, supported

by Grand Casual, and Roobs and the Washing Line Economy. All bands played great, but Roobs was an absolute stand out. It has been fantastic to see a young local lad in Robin Bottrell head to Perth and carry on with his pursuit of music. His band has played so many gigs over the last year and a half it’s damn hard to keep up! This relentless performing has paid off for them as a live band. Needless to say, we will see them again in Esperance before too long. I wasn’t quite sure how I could follow up such a successful event at The Cannery. Those musings lead to the reinvention of Balmy Nights.

The first edition of Balmy nights ran in late March 2017. It was a classy affair with a super cool lineup held in the Cannery courtyard. How then do I improve on that event while focussing on what made it great? The answer seemed simple, by pitching the concept to four brilliant local ladies and letting them take it to a level that I honestly couldn’t conceive.

Absolutely stoked to have Brodie Bratten (Brodeine and Deine), Haylee Thornton, Lucy Vincent (Love Childs) and Bronte Vincent (Esperance Tide) bringing their expertise to bare upon the event that will be a return to Balmy Nights. These girls are an absolute pleasure to work with, each bringing a unique skillset and adding so much to the development of this event.

You just know that it will be something special.

From there, where exactly do I go for a line-up? Welcoming Jamilla, Perth based electronic producer singer-songwriter, recently nominated for 6 WAMAwards. Jamilla’s new tune She has been blowing my mind - honestly, check her out.

Fieldsy I caught perform at Nannup Music Festival earlier in the year. This chick is an absolute wildcat bringing a super fun acoustic set with stunning vocals. Rachel Vibart joins the cast after a short break from local live performance.

Rach has been writing hard, and I can’t wait to hear a couple of new tracks from this local legend. MissGenius, based out of Kalgoorlie, is an indigenous MC with mad skills, recently nominated for 3 WAMAwards, including best Hip-Hop artist, and also opening for Grand Casual on our Kalgoorlie leg. And finally, we have Dr Tasty. This girl continues to blow my mind with the quality of her lyric writing and live performance and I’m absolutely wrapped to have this local gem onboard. Kind of an eclectic cast hey.

I’m sure you can see a concept starting to come together here, so where are the last pieces of the puzzle? Saturday, November 16 will see Balmy Nights Vol.2 held in the Cannery Arts Centre round garden. This is a stunning space that has rarely been utilised for live performance. Golden scenery abounds with a delightful forest escape backdrop lending itself to the creation of a stunning atmosphere.

With Brodie and Haylee leading the decorative process I’m super damn excited to see what they come up with. On the beverages front, we are stoked to have Lucky Bay Brewery with all your favourite local beers and fresh local business Juncture Cart Popup Cocktail Bar adding a super fine collection of cocktails to purchase for the evening.

We are aiming for an earlier start than usual with doors opening at 4pm and live music from 5pm so that we can catch that glorious afternoon sun and roll on as the sun goes down. Esperance & Districts Agricultural Show The Esperance and Districts Agricultural Society is back on this month and running over two days on October 18 & 19! The show is the biggest annual event held in Esperance, attracting about 10,000 visitors to the two-day event. And with all the current changes happening in the showgrounds, expect a different look and feel to this year’s event. A different layout as well as a completely full trades and machinery section. Chuck on some sunscreen, get down there early and make the most of it. I know we will be.

Charles Sandell ESPERANCE’S ANTARCTIC CONNECTION

In December 1911, the Australian Antarctic Expedition departed from Hobart, under the direction of Douglas Mawson. As teams from Norway and Great Britain were racing to be the first to reach the South Pole, Mawson instead set on an expedition devoted to scientific research. On this extremely gruelling trip, Mawson’s team was the first to visit the Magnetic South Pole. They also visited the unexplored area of Antarctica directly south of Australia, and collected important research data from the area. One of the members of the expedition was young electrician and radio operator Charles Sandell. Esperance locals may be familiar with this name, as Sandell later became a prominent Esperance figure.

Charles Sandell was born in Surrey, England, in 1886. He studied electrical engineering, and came to Australia in 1909. Sandell joined the Commonwealth Branch of Telephony in Sydney.

In 1911, because of his practical experience as a Telegraph operator, as well as his background as an electrician, Sandell applied and was accepted to join Douglas Mawson’s Antarctic expedition. Sandell was stationed on Macquarie Island, which is half way between New Zealand and Antarctica. Sandell was part of a five man crew, who were given the brief to make a complete survey of Macquarie Island, including the geographical features, birds, animals and marine life of the island. They also kept meteorological records and maintained contact between Mawson’s party in Antarctica and the mainland of Australia, a vital link in such hostile conditions. The five men lived for the two years of the expedition in a hut that measured 7 metres by 5 metres, officially (and perhaps ironically) named ‘King V Villa’.

Travelling in the ship Aurora, Mawson’s party reached Antarctica in January 1912. They made camp at a place Mawson named Cape Denison, at the head of Commonwealth Bay in Antarctica. Unknown to the party, Cape Denison is possibly the windiest place on earth, with wind gusts regularly exceeding 240 kilometres per hour. Building a radio tower was a priority for the expedition. The radio tower was built, but soon blew down again. Over the next year, several parties left on expeditions to explore the area, including Mawson himself, with two other men, on the ‘Far Eastern Trek’.

Back on Macquarie Island, the other radio operator was taken ill and evacuated back to Australia, leaving Sandell in charge of the radio equipment. The men made a significant survey of the island,

naming significant landmarks for men in the party, such as Sandell Bay. Sandell got an opportunity to travel to Antarctica on the Aurora when she returned to collect the men who had remained behind at the end of 1913. Mawson’s expedition had taken the first airplane to Antarctica, however due to issues such as the fuel freezing, the plane never flew and was abandoned. Sandell dug the propeller of the plane out of the snow, and kept it with Mawson’s blessing. The entire group returned to Australia in 2014, where Mawson received a knighthood for his contributions to science and exploration.

Charles Sandell joined the Coastal Radio service, and was stationed to Esperance as a radio operator.

He met Amy Daw, daughter of Esperance pioneers Francis and Polly Daw, and they were married in 1918. The couple had three sons, Doug, Eric and John.

Sandell opened the first garage and service station in Esperance,

Willy’s Garage, which was situated on the Esplanade. While the family moved away from Esperance for a time, they returned again, with Sandell retiring in the seaside town. He was well known for swimming in the ocean all year round, even in the coldest temperatures. He was known to quip that the only cold swim he had ever had was with Mawson’s expedition in the Antarctic.

He had actually experienced swimming in the icy water of Antarctica, having volunteered to dive into the water to rescue a piece of equipment that had fallen overboard. “With bits of ice floating everywhere, the water was a bit on the cool side,” Sandell said. “But it only took a good tot of rum to get me warm again.” In his retirement, Sandell maintained his connection to his previous occupation by repairing broken radios. He was a well known and well loved Esperance personality right through to his death in 1979 at the age of 94.

F IN D O U T MORE The Sandell family donated a collection of Charles Sandell’s personal effects from the Antarctic expedition to the Esperance Museum. These items, which include the propeller that he took from the airplane in Antarctica, can be viewed at the Museum.

On the ill-fated expedition, one of the men, with a team of dogs and a sled full of provisions, was lost down a deep crevasse in the ice.

Mawson and the other man, Xavier Mertz, headed back to Cape Denison with very few supplies.

Mertz died on the way back to the Cape, and Mawson almost suffered the same fate, before finally arriving back in February 1913, just as the Aurora was leaving for the season. Mawson caught a glimpse of the ship as it headed towards the horizon.

The six men who had remained behind to look for Mawson’s party were overjoyed to see him. They radioed the Aurora, but due to weather conditions, the ship was unable to return. The remaining men had to wait out another winter at Cape Denison.

Scenic Flying with Goldfields Air Services Lake Hillier is one of Esperance’s most recognisable icons. The startling pink of the lake on Middle Island contrasts with the brilliant blue of the ocean. The largest island of the Recherche Archipelago, Middle Island has a colourful and fascinating history that includes pirates, sealers, murder, and adventure. As most people know, Lake Hillier is a hidden gem, located 120 kilometres from the town of Esperance and 11 kilometres offshore from Cape Arid National Park. This makes it out of reach for many people to visit. What some people don’t know is that Goldfields Air Services operates a regular scenic flight over the spectacular lake, where the view can be appreciated from the best vantage point.

The scenic flight also takes in the spectacular views of the Recherche Archipelago, often spotting whales and other sea life. As local tour boats operate to Middle Island infrequently due to the long distance, a scenic flight is certainly the best way to visit the unmissable Lake Hillier.

Goldfields Air Services was established in 1982 in Kalgoorlie. Originally operating a regular service from Kalgoorlie to Perth, the company then narrowed its focus to become a specialist charter company. Now Goldfields Air Services operates flights throughout the Goldfields region, and as far as Geraldton and Eucla. The company services many mine sites, delivering workers to remote areas. Goldfields Air Services also regularly delivers freight, health service personnel, and a range of other passengers and goods to remote communities, outback towns, and coastal settlements. Along with the charter services, Goldfields Air Services also runs a flight school in Kalgoorlie, as well as in Esperance when there is demand. The company has a fleet of aircraft that includes 3 Beechcraft B200 Kingairs, which can take up to ten passengers at a time, and a range of smaller aircraft. The fleet also includes a Gippsland Aeronautics GA8 Airvan, which is located in Esperance and used for the scenic flights.

Managing Director Dougal McQuie has been a part of Goldfields Air Services for 10 years. He is now the sole owner of the company and enjoys the busy, varied role. Dougal grew up on the Nullarbor at Rawlina Station. His father had his private pilot’s licence and as such, some of Dougal’s earliest memories are of flying around the station. The small plane would be used for mustering stock or checking the water in different areas of the huge station. Dougal got his pilot’s licence at the age of 16, before he was even allowed to drive a car. Since then, his love of flying has turned into a very busy day job! Goldfields Air Services’ motto is ‘Not Safe – Not Happening’, which demonstrates the central part that safety plays in the company’s ethos. As Dougal says, keeping the fleet in line with the industry’s rigorous compliance requirements can be a huge challenge. Dougal is not one to back away from a challenge, though, and he has thrown his considerable energies into making sure the company prioritises safety, while still being a flexible and accommodating service.

BUSH BANTER Big ideas for smal l native gardens You don’t need to have a vast estate to grow a native garden. There are lots of low growing local native shrubs to choose from. Plant technology has enabled plant breeders to minimise some plants that would normally get to a much larger height and in turn, these species have become perfect for the smaller garden.

Some of our classic local natives like the Acacia saligna (golden wattle), Melaleuca pentagona, Calothamnus quadrifidus (one-sided bottlebrush), Adenantos cuneatus (jugflower) and even the Adenanthos sericeus (Albany woolly bush) all have a mini version.

If you prefer to keep it real, then try the lovely smaller melaleucas, like the Melaleuca pulchella (clawflower), Melaleuca glaberrima (mauve honey myrtle) or the very unusual subserosa (corky bark myrtle). Scaevola globulifera and Scaevola cuniformis will give you a spectacular display of purple flowers in spring but won’t take up too much room. The Pimelia ferruginea is putting on an amazing show of flowers this year and is a must for any native garden. If you have run out of space try the Pimelia in a pot. Kangaroo paws also do well in a pot but may need dividing if they get too crowded.

All gardens thrive with a bit of love and attention.

Keep native gardens moist when first planted but as the plants become more established, you should be able to reduce the watering. Fertilise with a low pH native fertiliser.

To some, the creator will fix the world rising from the ashes to save those who believe and commit their faith. To others, the ease of rejecting the notion makes for a head in the sand approach while others of unqualified means are trying to disprove it. And now, with so much media coverage, the polarising (pun intended)of people has begun. I suppose David Attenborough, Greta Thunberg and Kerry O’Brien will be in the firing line for pointing out the obvious.

These people are not asking you to give up much and are encouraging action to help us all. Younger people are more educated than when you were young. They are more naturally global-minded and are voicing their opinion as the penny drops.

Please give them respect as they bring something new to the world Its not a new craze, drug, music genre, a haircut or dress code, but it theirs to pursue!

Let’s begin to bridge the gap between wellness and fun. Do you know what makes you healthy? Having fun and doing things you love, with the best company. Too often we’re told that we have to do this particular workout and cut out X, Y and Z to reach our “peak performance”. What if your healthiest life was doing something you love… Every single day.

Notice your language around the things you do… Is it because you “should” or because you want to?

It’s the small things you do each day that add up over time to make a big difference, without trading a fun lifestyle for health; you can have both! Make a list of 3-5 things you love doing. These don’t have to be big things, they can be activities like going for your morning coffee, coastal walk, surfing, yoga, or calling a friend... whatever floats your boat.

Side note: If something is difficult at first but makes you feel amazing afterwards, that counts too! Sometimes the most challenging things in life are the most fulfilling. Instead of filling our days with things we “should” do, we can aim to fit in something we love each day. Making time for something enjoyable for 30 minutes is only 2 per cent of your day.

MINDFUL MERVE R U OK? RUOK is a fantastic campaign to draw attention to a very simple way to check in on someone’s mental wellbeing. It’s easy, but we don’t always do it for a number of reasons.

Sometimes we are so caught up in our own busy lives and fail to notice how those around us are travelling, or we have so much undealt with stuff of our own that we don’t dare to ask someone else how they are in case they actually tell us! Or is it a matter of not being able to read the signs of a person struggling?

Indicators include making excuses for not joining in usual activities, losing or gaining weight, taking sick days or expressing dissatisfaction with work, relationships or the world in general. The signs are not always obvious as it is not uncommon for those most depressed to be the life of the party or to volunteer to help others. Those who become seriously suicidal are often very good at hiding it as they have made a plan and want to implement it without suspicion.

People at this stage can seem upbeat, visiting family or friends and may ask to have pets or other personal items to be minded for some reason.

Helping someone who is seriously not OK is never easy. Ask the RUOK question but follow it up with, “Why is that?” Listening, really listening, is so important. If you have any doubt about the seriousness of the answers to your questions, assist that person to seek professional help. This can include visiting their GP, presenting at the hospital or contacting the organisations below.

Bang Bang Cauliflower SWEET, CHILLI AND VEGAN FRIENDLY

Ingredients 3 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp sweet chilli sauce 1 tbsp sriracha 1 tbsp white vinegar Juice of 1 lime 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 medium cauliflower, cut into florets Salt & pepper Coriander, for garnish

Method 1. Preheat oven to 220ยบC. 2. In a small bowl, whisk together olive oil, sweet chilli sauce, Sriracha, vinegar, lime juice, and garlic.

3. On a large baking sheet, toss cauliflower in the sauce until fully coated.

4. Season generously with salt and pepper.

5. Spread into an even layer and roast until slightly charred and tender, 30 to 35 minutes.

6. Garnish with chopped coriander and serve with rice
