Spring is officially here and we couldn’t be more excited at the prospect of the weather warming up! The season got off to a shaky start, with a few wet and windy days earlier in the week. But, according to the forecast below, we’re in for a warm weekend. That can only mean one thing... It’s time to get your bathers out of storage and hope they still fit!

We love September at the Tide because the wildflowers are in full bloom.

There are an estimated 2,500 different species of native flora in the region and now is the best time to get on the road to see them in all their glory.

Both Esperance and Ravensthorpe have their own wildflower festivals this month, each with hundreds of specimens on display and a myriad of events for all ages. Before you head to the festivals, get up to speed with what’s on, on pages 4 and 6.

Inspired by wildflower season, we had a chat to Antoinette Vincent from Esperance Farms Trees to discuss the projects in the region she has provided native plants for [p.8]. You’ll be surprised at how many of the plants you see around town have come from this local nursery. We’ve also put together a Tide Guide to using natives in your own garden [p.12]. Many native plants are resilient, water-wise and astonishingly beautiful, so why not think about planting a couple in your yard?

Esperance Wildflower Festival With the onset of spring comes the annual Esperance Wildflower Festival.

Now in its thirtieth year, the 2020 festival promises to be as engaging and as colourful as ever.

The Esperance Wildflower Festival, coordinated by Esperance Community Arts, Esperance Wildflower Society and St Andrew’s Anglican Parish, is a celebration of the spectacular flora that abounds throughout the region. Some 2,500 species grow in the Shire of Esperance alone, with almost half of these having made their way to the festival’s coveted Display of Specimens over the last few years. This year, around 500 local species will be on display.

Flowers & Feathers: Friends or Foes?

This year’s theme – Flowers & Feathers: Friends or Foes? – explores the suite of varying interactions between plants and birds. Not all relationships between the two are mutually beneficial. For example, plants might provide birds with shelter, nesting and perching sites, and seeds to eat, however this doesn’t advantage the plants in any way. On the other hand, birds may provide a pollination service to plants. With a strong focus on environmental education, the festival seeks to raise awareness of local environments and conservation issues, including that birds are completely dependent on the plant environments they inhabit.

Highlighting Native Flora Through the Arts A significant feature of the Esperance Wildflower Festival is its many arts-related components delivered by Esperance Community Arts. For months now, several arts projects have been underway in preparation for the festival. One of these is the Flowers & Feathers Soundscape Project, facilitated by visiting ecological artist Perdita Phillips. Perdita is interested in the art of ecological listening; bringing the non-human world to the attention of her audience.

She visited Esperance to record the sounds of the wetland environment with community members at Lake Monjingup on World Listening Day (18 July), followed by workshops teaching locals how to create their own sound installations.

Running alongside the soundscape project is a community sculpture project, also with a wetland theme. Led by local artists Mylene van Heijster, Naomi Stanitzki, Melodie Reynolds-Diarra and Jennell Reynolds, the project is focussed on the Australasian Bittern, an endangered wetland bird. It is estimated only 14 individuals remain in the Esperance region. The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, along with Birdlife Australia, have placed sound recording devices in the areas the bitterns are thought to be, to capture their calls. These recordings will be placed into one of the Flowers & Feathers soundscapes.

the art and nominate their favourite work for a People’s Choice Award. Twelve schools from around the region have also participated in the exhibition and will have their work installed in the St Andrews Anglican Church.

The Act-Belong-Commit Esperance Wildflower Festival Art Exhibition and Competition will run again this year, with individuals, community groups and school groups submitting works along the Flowers & Feathers theme. Individual and community group entries will be displayed in businesses throughout the Esperance CBD, encouraging people to drop into local shops to peruse

The Esperance Wildflower Festival will be held from 22 – 26 September across the Esperance Civic Centre, Anglican Parish Hall and St Andrew’s Anglican Church. T IP S FOR W IL D F L OW E R S P O T T I NG We spoke to Ken Mills, President of Esperance Wildflower Society, to get his tips for this wildflower season.

• Get out and look! You’ll find so much that you don’t realise is there when you’re driving, such as small orchids.

• Areas of granite are really interesting. There are a lot of species that are only found on granite and if there’s been rain, you’ll find miniature gardens in amongst the moss beds.

• Explore different areas. Cascade Road and Fisheries Road are terrific, as is Mount Ragged, which, even though it can be difficult to get to, has its own unique species that can’t be found anywhere else in the world.

• The collection of wildflowers for the festival is a highly regulated exercise, requiring a special licence and shire approval. Any species declared rare cannot be picked and as such, sound knowledge of local flora is imperative. Please don’t pick the wildflowers.

The soundscapes and the sculptures, which have been created primarily using recycled textiles and papiermâché, will be installed together in the Esperance Civic Centre, creating an immersive wetland experience for visitors.

Ravensthorpe Wildflower Show & Spring Festival The region surrounding Ravensthorpe is home to 20 per cent of Western Australia’s floral species, some of which are yet to be documented. At present, the region has roughly 3,000 species filed in its herbarium. For almost 40 years, the Ravensthorpe Wildflower Show has been celebrating and showcasing this abundance of floral diversity in the region. This year’s show, and its accompanying Spring Festival, will be as abundant as ever. From 7-16 September, more than 600 species will be on display at the Ravensthorpe Town Hall, while a myriad of events will take place throughout the town and its surrounds.

Prior to the show every year, a team of local pickers – each of whom are qualified and licenced – gather wildflowers, which are then sorted and classified before being displayed in the Town Hall. Which species are picked depends entirely on the season and so far, Mother Nature has been kind. Thanks to welcome rainfall in August, this year’s display promises to be as bountiful as ever.

The Ravensthorpe Wildflower Show and Spring Festival is a community effort, with some 200 volunteers lending a hand. The show itself has grown immensely over its 38-years, outgrowing its original venue at the town’s senior citizens centre and moving into the Town Hall. The hall not only houses the hundreds of wildflowers but a host of other attractions also, from information on the geology of the region to an eclectic assortment of bits and pieces found in the area. The latter is known as ‘Bush Bizzo’ and includes a taxidermied echidna, abandoned nests and insect skeletons.

The festival has attracted several well-known names this year, with ABC presenter Sabrina Hahn, The West Australian travel journalist William Yeoman, and celebrity butcher Vince Garreffa all making their way down to Ravensthorpe to partake in the festivities. Sabrina, ABC Radio’s gardening guru, is the patron of the event, while William will officially open the show. Vince will host a picnic and sausage making competition on 13 September, with all proceeds of the event going to Lifeline.

Established as a farm tree and forestry nursery in the late-1980s, Esperance Farm Trees now focusses on growing regenerative, native plants. The nursery has a species list that is ever-growing but is currently home to 160 species, most of which are local to the Esperance area. Antoinette’s clientele is varied, from home gardeners, to local businesses, to shires.

Antoinette takes great pride in her work. One of her favourite undertakings to date is the main street in Ravensthorpe, a streetscape project for which she provided roughly 12,000 seedlings. She stumbled across the project by chance while driving through the town one day. Spotting roadworks and wondering if they needed plants, she did some ringing around and managed to get a hold of the project coordinator. Her timing couldn’t have been better. “They were just about to start ordering seedlings,” she said. “They virtually gave me the job on the spot.”

Scattered between the two service stations along Morgans Street, Antoinette’s work in Ravensthorpe can be seen without taking a detour or even leaving the car. However, with nearly 40 different species planted along the street, the intricacy of the garden beds is worthwhile exploring by foot. September is the optimum month to visit. “When the Ravensthorpe Wildflower Show and Spring Festival is on, everything is flowering and it just looks beautiful,” she said. “There’s such a variety of species, it’s a bit like the bush. It hasn’t been landscaped, as such. It’s not orderly.”

Closer to home, plants from the Esperance Farm Trees nursery can be found in public and private gardens throughout Esperance. The Esperance Foreshore was one of Antoinette’s earliest projects, for which she provided more than 10,000 seedlings. The Esperance Aged Care Facility, Lucky Bay campsite and the Port of Esperance are also home to thousands of natives grown by Antoinette.

Antoinette has an eclectic support crew behind her. Over the last four years, she has hosted an estimated 50 foreign travellers, each of whom have assisted her in the nursery in exchange for food and lodging. Coordinated through HelpX, a platform in which people work a few hours a day in return for their homestay, Antoinette has had assistance from numerous nationalities, including French, English, Estonian, Canadian and Swedish. Having spent several years travelling the world in her early-20s, Antoinette jumped at the chance to host foreign travellers during their stay in Esperance. “For me, being an ex-traveller, it’s great,” she said. “I love meeting people from different parts of the world. But it’s also a really good opportunity for them because they get to experience Esperance from the perspective of a local.”

Antoinette has the support of local teens, too, taking Esperance Senior High School, Esperance Farm Training Centre and Wongatha CAPS students under her wing through work placements and internships. She is always happy to share her knowledge and have them be involved in whatever project she is working on at the time. She also works closely alongside the Tjaltjraak Rangers, a group of Indigenous rangers who undertake environmental protection and land care projects in the Esperance region. ⟶

Antoinette Vincent’s enthusiasm for native plants is unmistakable. Her eyes light up when she begins talking about her business Esperance Farm Trees, which, for her, is as much a lifestyle as it is a way to make a living.

“Some days I think I’ve got the best job in the world,” Antoinette says of her role; growing and nurturing native seedlings until they are ready to plant.

Having never formally studied horticulture, the skills and knowledge Antoinette shares with others is mostly self-taught.

She is highly inquisitive, constantly learning from both her experiences and her list of knowledgeable contacts. “This isn’t a field where everything fits into a textbook,” she said. “It’s a learned experience. You might put a seed in one year and it’ll grow but then the next year, something different will happen.

Every year you learn something new.”

Esperance Farm Trees is much more than just a business to Antoinette; it’s the foundation of her obsession with native plants. Describing herself as “a native fanatic,” she is constantly on the lookout for new or interesting local species.

When she drives through the region, Antoinette keeps one eye on the road and one eye on the bush, just in case she spots something she hasn’t seen previously. “You do become a bit obsessive,” she said. “I know people probably say, ‘Don’t drive to Ravensthorpe with her!’ because I’ll stop about 20 times on the way, but I’m continually fascinated by the abundance and variety of what’s out there.”

The current healthy status of many crops is thanks to rain events in late July and August. However, this is not the case for the whole district. The Esperance region had a fairly dry start to the season and early on growth was slow, except for a few pockets out east that had some early rain events. Tiahn Mickel, who farms 130 kilometres northeast of Esperance in Beaumont, said prior to the rain they were relying on subsoil moisture to germinate and establish plants, resulting in patchy germination on their heavier soils. “It was pretty dire,” she said. “We were cutting operational costs until the rain came.”

Rain distribution differs across the Esperance region, with areas close to the coast receiving more rain than areas further north. If it’s raining in town it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s raining out on farms. Agronomist Giles McMeikan said things turned around pretty quickly with a few timely fronts from late July into August, providing good moisture for much of the district.

“Unfortunately, north of Salmon Gums missed out on these rains and they’re holding out on some finishing rains to get them through [the season],” Giles said.

Salmon Gums farmer Dylan Norwood concurred, saying they needed rain as soon as possible. “She’s getting dry,” he said. “Over the last three months I’ve only had 70mm.”

Provided the region receives some finishing rain this month, it’s likely many local growers will get close to their average yield, with those closer to the coast hoping for a bumper crop. Meanwhile Grass Patch and Salmon Gums are also hoping to get close to their average yields, so long as the rain comes and the frost holds off.

So, make sure you’re doing your rain dances this month to encourage the rain to fall all around the Esperance region!

Driving around the Esperance region at the moment, you’re likely to see a patchwork of green and yellow stretching as far as the eye can see.

Canola is in full flower across most paddocks, and field peas and faba beans are flowering and beginning to set pods. Cereal crops like wheat and barley are either close to pushing out a head – the part of the crop where the grain comes from – or it’s already out.

Around this time of year, it’s tempting to look at all the amazing wildflowers in bloom and wish that you could grow them in your own garden. Well, not only is it possible to grow Australian native plants in your garden, it also has a lot of great benefits! Native plants are well suited to Esperance’s sandy soil and require less water than the usual typical ‘English garden’ flowers. They are better suited to our climate and conditions. Native plants look good year-round and often require less maintenance than regular gardens.

Most importantly, native plants can provide habitat and food for native birds and even some small native animals. You also get to experience the smug feeling that comes with planting a sustainable, water-wise garden that also looks great!

The downside is that natives can be a bit temperamental if you don’t follow a few basic rules. If you’ve had the experience of buying a gorgeous native plant at the nursery, only to watch it wither up and die in your garden, don’t fear! There are some things you can do to improve your chances of success with planting native plants. There are also some things you can do to ensure that native birds get the most out of your garden. Here are our top tips for the best success.

Australia has more than 24,000 species of native plants. Which should you choose to plant in your garden? Before you start buying plants, check out what varieties of natives do well in the Esperance area. Chat with one of the many native flora experts in Esperance, or go for a walk around the neighbourhood. Take a look at what native plants seem to be doing well, and plant them.

Native plants don’t need a lot of water when they are established. But, like any plants, they will die if they dry out, especially before they get the chance to put their roots down deep. So make sure you water them regularly to start with, until they are well established.

Size m atters

Be cautious with fertiliser Native plants don’t need much fertiliser, and soil that is too rich can actually kill them. They prefer slightly acidic soil, so certain soil improvers that increase the soil’s pH can kill natives. Instead, give them a little bit of compost, some soil wetter if they are in a dry spot in the garden, and if you want to give them a boost, buy specially formulated fertiliser for native plants.

Native plants love plenty of mulch. Mulch simulates the growing conditions of the bush, where plants will usually be growing amongst leaf litter. Any kind of organic material will work as a mulch for natives, such as pea hay, wood chips, or straw. Mulch helps to keep the moisture in the soil, so it will help reduce the amount of water you need to use on your garden as well.

Give them a haircut Native plants need to be pruned regularly to keep them tidy. The best time to prune is after the plant has finished flowering. You can trim them back by up to a third of their size.

For the birds Native plants flower at different times of the year. The birds in your area will thank you if you have plants that flower throughout the year, rather than all at once. It’s also a good idea to have a source of water in your garden for the birds, such as a bird bath, or even just a shallow dish in a spot that offers some protection.

Native plants come in all shapes and sizes, from huge trees to groundcovers. Aim for a layered effect, which will give shape to your garden, and use hardy native groundcovers to fill in any bare gaps. Be aware of how big the plant will get and select plants that fit your garden. You don’t want large trees too close to your house, for example, or big shrubs that are going to crowd out other plants.

I met Tash from The Little Lord Street Band around a year-and-a-half ago. Chatting away, it felt as if I'd known her for ages, most likely due to the presence of LLSB within the Western Australian music industry. Being constantly nominated for and winning WA songwriting awards puts your work on the map. Upon giving the band’s back catalogue a good listen, the accolades, no doubt hardearned, are well deserved. In 2019, on my yearly pilgrimage to WAMCon, I got hold of that year’s WAM mixtape, an array of cracking music featuring 2019 WAMAward nominees. A stand out track for me was ‘Frankie’s Back in Town’ by LLSB. I gave it a solid thrashing and feel like I know all the lyrics by now. Check the tune out if you’re into rock, blues, folk or country, as it sits somewhere within those genres. With their debut album just around the corner and an epic supporting tour that takes in Esperance, the time was right to catch up with LLSB for the Esperance Tide.

Incredible. The achievement in experiencing, writing, demoing, creating, rehearsing, preproducing, recording, compiling the songs and designing artwork to print and press the album is several years in the making, so elation comes to mind when describing releasing this baby. It’s so exciting to share it with people far and wide.

It's a mixed bag of Tash and Jim’s different writing styles blended in a Lordy fashion to give this eclectic folk-rock, alt-country sound to the album. Lyrically, the album is full of the hardships of love, loss, anxiety, sacrifices, and relationships that come and go, with personal and learned experiences in amongst it all.

We had a great time with Dan Carroll at RADA studios.

As a band, we locked in. The energy in the room leant itself to the fact we had practised, rehearsed and invested in the album pre-production. The fun and curly parts were getting the guitars, vocals and harmonies down and extra instrumentation right.

It’s hard to pick! So many places and venues have been very, very good to us. We always walk away feeling topped up in the soul, especially this last run we did in August (Exmouth and Kalbarri). All the feels.

Don’t get us wrong, we do love a challenge and if an audience is dubious as to who we are and what we are about, with the comedy or our stage banter, we back it up with those fun feels and try get them dancing or involved (enter the spoons and shakers). It usually wins them over and they leave feeling great, having had a laugh at us and enjoying themselves and forgetting their worries. We like to think regional audiences love what we do and we just feed that love right back to them. It’s taken around six or so years to build fans in towns around WA - which is no easy feat with lots of kilometres, pindan and those long, long, long stretched roads ahead.

There were a lot of laughs and heaps of mucking around which is what normally happens with us so sometimes we got carried away. We had Bri Clark in the studio on a few songs too, which was awesome to mix up the band chemistry. There were a few songs that took longer, like ‘Through the Night’ and ‘Minute of Another Day.’ Both needed a bit of extra time and finessing to settle.

Good question. We get Fleetwood Mac quite a bit. We also get Johnny Cash and June Carter, so Fleetwood Cash? We’re really into lots of things but Creedence Clearwater Revival, Gillian Welch, Tom Petty, and The Flying Burrito Brothers are just a few we can name at the drop of a hat.

We are a little addicted to the road! Getting out on the road, meeting new folks and giving them the best night is such a buzz, it’s an easy one for us! I mean, we could be tired from an eight-hour drive and daunted by the setup and three-hour straight show, but we just kick into gear as soon as we’ve started and we don’t get another second to notice that we're sore, tired or hungry. It’s just something else. When you finish, it hits you big time. Deferred energy and all that, but it’s worth it!

With COVID restrictions in place, we thought we’d punch out a WA tour and go far and wide and play a few places we’ve not been to before. Despite the year and the frustrations in having to cancel previous shows, launches and tours, we are game to get out there and play, if we can. Life’s too short to wait around for the what if’s, plus we’ve got this new album that deserves a big road trip, so we’re going to do it.

One of the characters we’ve come across in our travels appears in the video clip for ‘Frankie’s Back in Town.’

His name is ‘Wado’ and he’s a Nannup legend, along with the Dobbin family who we always hang out with when we’re down there. Honourable mentions include ‘Freddo’ in Kununurra, who bathed himself in champagne, a stage crashing harmonica player in Exmouth called ‘Billy’, a spoon tapping bodybuilder, also in Exmouth, cornbread throwing Caroline in Geelong and the pants down Eagle Rock dance, which can be found anywhere in WA. Yeah for sure, we’ve played a few places around Australia in our six-plus years, some gigs as the band and some as the duo. To bring the full band and play this set in Esperance is a biggie. Last time we were in town (earlier this year), there were a bunch of legends having the best time at the Sunday session and we thought, hang on, where did all these kids come from?

It was nuts. So, we’re excited to bring the full band and make more noise for you all. We have a few friends and family in Esperance also, so it’ll be a right treat to play for them, cos we are fed up with them asking when we’ll come play. So, here we are folks, come and get it!

THE BRIDGE Conversations with counterparts in the Western Australian music industry have been positive over recent weeks. All share gratitude that we are in one of the only places in the world where the live music scene is able to operate at a viable level. Venues across the state have been supportive and quick to adapt to COVID norm, as have audiences who have shown their overwhelming support for the WA music industry. Getting out and about has never felt better; getting back to work has never felt better. Summer is fast approaching and I feel so damn lucky to be taking a serious look at programming. With WA acts super keen to get out into regional areas, it’s an exciting time to be in the Kyza Presents driving seat.

Shaun Tan: Rules of Summer

The quirky, dystopian works of Perth-born artist, writer and filmmaker Shaun Tan will be exhibited at the Cannery Arts Centre this month. Rules of Summer features a unique collection of original paintings made for the picture book of the same title, as well as working drawings and artist’s notes.

Shaun, who now lives in Melbourne, is best known for his illustrated books that deal with social and historical subjects through dream-like imagery.

The Lost Thing is a title of Shaun’s that would be familiar to anyone in school in the year 2000.

In 2010, the book was adapted into a 15-minute animated short film of the same title, directed by Shaun and narrated by fellow Perth-raised creative, Tim Minchin. The adaptation went on to win Best Animated Short Film at the Academy Awards that same year. Other titles of Shaun’s include The Rabbits, The Red Tree, Tales from Outer Suburbia and the acclaimed wordless novel The Arrival. Shaun also worked as a concept artist on Pixar’s critically acclaimed animated feature film, WALL-E. Rules of Summer explores the friendship of two young boys as it is challenged by difficult and irrational situations, each one a metaphor for familiar childhood experiences. The story is little more than a list of mysterious rules, ‘Never step on a snail’, ‘Never leave the back door open overnight’ or ‘Never leave a red sock on the clothesline’. As each rule is broken – not always by accident – surprising consequences ensue, and audiences are invited to decide for themselves what is really happening and why.

Shaun hopes everyone finds their own nostalgia in his painted dreams, perhaps unlocking some other real emotion relating to friends, siblings and partners.

“Objects in a rear-view mirror may be closer than they appear,” he said. “The same might be said for many works of so-called fiction, where strange and far-away things are not really so strange, and not really so far away.”

Street Names of Esperance

Have you ever wondered how some of the streets in Esperance got their names?

In 1863, Charles and Andrew Dempster arrived in the Esperance area. They were the first European settlers to take up land in Esperance, although sealers and whalers had been living on the islands of the archipelago for some time. (The first pastoral lease in the area was for land on Middle Island.)

The brothers leased 304,000 acres and brought sheep, cattle and horses overland from Northam to stock the land. Andrew Dempster, who married Emily Marsden, settled in Esperance in Dempster Homestead, which was designed by his brother James. Andrew and Emily went on to have 10 children before Emily died in tragic circumstances in 1888. Andrew moved back to Northam after this, leaving the landholdings in Esperance under the care of a series of managers.

Andrew Street, James Street and William Street in Esperance are all named after the Dempster brothers. The Esplanade was originally named Edward Street, after Charles Dempster (who was known by his middle name, Edward), until it was renamed in 1898. Emily Street was named for Emily Dempster. Jane Street was named for Jane Dempster, one of their sisters. Along with Dempster Street and the suburb of Dempster Heights, we also have two Dempster Roads in the district, one in Myrup and one in Scaddan. Even Amelia Circuit in West Beach is named for the ship that the Dempsters used to bring goods from Albany to Esperance.

Many men came to Esperance to work for the Dempsters and sometimes stayed in the area along with their families. The suburb of Sinclair is named after Laurence and Julia Sinclair. Laurence was one of the Dempsters’ first stockmen in Esperance.

As legend has it, Laurence stopped to camp one night during a journey through the Dundas area, and his horse, named Hardy Norseman, pawed up a gold nugget. This led to a gold rush in the area.

The town of Norseman, established where the gold was found, was named after Laurence’s horse. Hannett Point, which is now commonly known as the Jetty Headland, was named after one of the Dempsters’ other stockmen, Ben Hannett. When Andrew Dempster left the area, he appointed Henry and Emma Bostock as managers for the landholdings. Bostock Street in West Beach is named after them.

Along with the Dempsters, many of the other streets in town got their names from early explorers and surveyors. Forrest Street is named after the explorer John Forrest, who travelled through the Esperance area on his expeditions, and who later became the first Premier of Western Australia. Windich Street was named for Aboriginal explorer and guide Tommy Windich, who accompanied Forrest on his expeditions. Windich later died in Esperance and was buried here. Hammersley Street is named for a prominent WA family, who were friends of the Dempsters. John Forrest married Margaret Hammersley. Alexander Drive in Castletown is named after Alexander Forrest, John’s brother, who was also an explorer and accompanied John on many expeditions.

Eyre Street is named for the explorer John Eyre. Wylie Bay is named for another Indigenous guide and explorer, Wylie, who accompanied Eyre on his expeditions. Brazier and Brockman Streets were both named after early surveyors who worked in the area.

Other streets were named after prominent people who lived in Esperance in the early days. Black Street is named after Dr Ernest Black, the first resident magistrate

in Esperance. Edwards Street in Nulsen is named after Esperance’s first mayor, Thomas Edwards. The first Town Clerk was Henry Sims, and Sims Street is named after him. Henry Sims was also known for planting many of the Norfolk Pine trees in town. Later in life, he became the Roads Board Secretary. He was succeeded as the Roads Board Secretary by his daughter, Mrs Thelma Chadwick, the first woman to hold that role. She oversaw the construction of a great number of roads in the district for a period of nine years, and the suburb of Chadwick is named for her. The suburb of Nulsen is named after Emil Nulsen. Nulsen had lived in Norseman, where he ran a grocery store, then Salmon Gums, where he owned a hotel and farm. He served on the Dundas Roads Board, and later became a long-serving politician in the WA Labor Party.

Many of the streets in town are named after the early farmers who settled in the area, such as Bow Street, builders, such as Baseden Street, or cabinet makers, such as Arthur Street. Coppin Street is named after one of the first policemen in town. Many streets are named for Army servicemen from the Esperance area, such as Fullerton Street, Frearson Street, Morton Way, and McCudden Street. Some of the streets in town got their names from quite unusual places. In the years of the gold rush, Afghan cameleers played a very important role in transporting goods and water from Esperance to the goldfields in Norseman, Coolgardie and beyond. One of these cameleers was named Prince Alana, and he owned a number of camels that he used to transport goods to the goldfields. He rode on a nearly white camel and was said to dress in fine silks and velvets. Not much else is known about him. Both Alana Road in Gibson and Alana Street in Pink Lake are named after him.

The Herbivore’s Handbook Plant-based eating is quickly transitioning from a food fad to a completely normal dietary choice.

It’s no longer just “woke capital city greenies” ditching or reducing their consumption of animalbased products, but a wide cross section of the community. While some wouldn’t dream of going near meat, eggs and dairy, whether it be for health, environmental or ethical reasons, others are more ‘flexitarian’, eating a mostly veg diet but enjoying a snag from Bunnings every now and then (no judgement here). Then there are those who incorporate the occasional plant-based meal into their diet for no other reason than, well, it tastes bloody good!

Much like the earth’s temperature, society is warming to this plant-based thing more and more.

While regional eateries have been a little slower to catch on than those in the big smoke (at last count, Sydney had almost 70 restaurants that were 100 per cent plant-based), we’re not tooo far behind. Thankfully, the days of a garden salad being a herbivore’s only option when dining out are on the decline, with more and more eateries adding plant-based options to their menus.

We were hungry, so we set out on a culinary journey through Esperance to discover who’s offering what when it comes to plant-based food.

These were some of our favourites.

Cloud Eleven Coffee + Tea We run on coffee at the Tide, and Cloud Eleven Coffee + Tea is our go-to for plant-based milks.

The crew at Cloud Eleven only use the good stuff, frothing up Minor Figures, Milk Lab and Bonsoy to pour over their freshly roasted coffee. A special shout out to the oat milk latte – to say it’s a life changing experience would be an exaggeration, but only slightly. If you’re peckish, check out their soba noodle salad. It’s so popular, they recommend ordering it the day prior. Itadakimasu!

Esperance Sri Lankan Taste We’ve never been to Sri Lanka but our taste buds have, thanks to Esperance Sri Lankan Taste. If you’ve been living under a rock (or if you’re a visitor to town, in which case, welcome), Esperance Sri Lankan Taste takes over the Fish Face kitchen every Monday, pumping out traditional Sri Lankan meals that have to be tasted to be believed. The menu varies from week to week but consistently has three or four vegan options. Our favourites are the melt-in-yourmouth eggplant curry and the flavour bomb that is the lentil curry. Complete the experience with a vegetable roti, served with their house made chilli onion salad.

There’s nothing fishy going on at Lucky Bay Brewing – every single one of their brews is vegan-friendly (praise the beer gods). Your mum always told you to eat while you’re drinking, so take her advice and grab a bite to pair with your paddle. You can’t go past a woodfired pizza (who needs cheese with dough that good?!) or if you’re after something lighter, grab a couple of veggie skewers. Cheers!

These guys have killer Moroccan veg fritters coming out of their kitchen. Made in-house, they’re super tasty – a little crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Add them to your vego big brekky, alongside spinach, mushrooms, tomato, baked beans, hash browns and avo. At lunch, the fritters are served up in a burger with a side of hot chips.

If that doesn’t take your fancy, the team is happy to make fresh sandwiches and wraps to order. Just let them know you want it vegan and they’ll take care of the rest!

S’juice Nutritionists often advise us to eat the rainbow. Well, thanks to our good mates at S’juice, you can drink the rainbow too. S’juice has not only been smashing out an impressive list of fruit and veggie juices for more than ten years, but they’ve been honing their panini and soup making skills too. The little green van on the foreshore does a mean vegan panini, packed with roasted eggplant, capsicum, roma tomatoes, and fresh basil. Their soups are often plant-based, too, making for the perfect combo on those chilly Esperance days!

Taylor St Quarters Our favourite place to while away the hours on a sunny afternoon, Taylor St Quarters recently released a new menu with ample plant-based options. For lunch, there’s a host of choices, including kale pesto fettucine with vegan pangrattato and their OG earth burger.

The karaage tofu bao buns, loaded with crispy fried tofu and wakame, are not to be missed.

If you can’t make it for lunch, never fear. That same crispy tofu is on the dinner menu, sans bun, drizzled with a mouth-watering sesame dressing. Pair it with polenta chips with vegan garlic aioli and a serve of spiced roast pumpkin and you’ve got yourself a meal. Hello, food coma.

In 2017, Sara Czaplinski opened a store in Museum Village to sell her handmade macramé, as well as wares by other local artists. Knots & Weaves, as it was known, evolved rapidly, outgrowing the small shop and relocating to Dutton Arcade one year later. The business has gone from strength to strength, evolving its identity, acquiring Esperance Beeline Florist, and now, relocating and rebranding as Luxe Floral & Home Co. The new store opened on Dempster Street on Monday, just one day shy of exactly three years since Sara moved into that little shop in Museum Village.

Luxe Floral & Home Co. is just that. Luxe. With expansive street views, granite floors and an abundance of space, the new store is a welcome addition to Esperance’s retail scene. Sara is a fervent supporter of local business, evident on the shelves of her store. Local artisans like Wildberry Art, Soaping Naturally and Coastal Scents Candles have a presence in Luxe Floral & Home Co. For Father’s Day, she’s teamed up with Lucky Bay Brewing to create beer and chocolate hampers. “I really like to work with and support other local businesses,” she said.

“It’s something I pride myself on. I’m passionate about businesses working together rather than competing against one another.”

Luxe Floral & Home Co. is the amalgamation of Knots & Weaves and Esperance Beeline Florist, which Sara purchased earlier this year. Sara had no experience in floristry but threw herself into the business, which, after 20 years of operation, needed a little revitalising. Sara was nervous about dropping the Beeline name, as it had been a constant in the community for so many years.

However, she felt it was time. “We still have the same staff and we’re still producing the same good stuff,” she said. “It was just ready for a refresh, to get the town excited about something new.”

The store also stocks an extensive range of upscale homewares and an array of indoor plants. Sara, who has an interior design background, enjoys helping her customers to style their homes using these products.

She sees this as a creative outlet; her other business is Esperance Plumbing Service, which she has owned with her husband Karl for the last six years.

Featuring beautiful blooms, gifts and interior decor, this boutique store offers a wide range of flowers and beautiful home and giftware to entice you!

Nicknamed ‘The Luxe Ladies’, Sara has four staff, each of whom she has relied upon for honest feedback throughout the rebranding process, as well as the fit out of the new store. “I can’t even express how amazing my staff have been,” she said. “We’re all on the same page with my vision. We’re a team.”

Ever the creative, Sara will commence training in the art of floristry next year, enabling her to be more handson in that facet of the business. In the coming months, customers will be able to order flowers directly from the Luxe Floral & Home Co. website, and plans are in the works for both a floral subscription service and an opulent private meeting room dedicated to couples planning floral arrangements for their weddings.

If you look behind the scenes, you’ll often find selfless, generous people who give their time and energy to great causes. Here is one of our inspiring ‘hidden heroes’ who make this community such a wonderful place.

Connor Davies was nominated as a Hidden Hero for his role as the Chair of the Esperance Shire’s Sustainability Working Group, which aims to improve sustainability across all of the Shire’s internal operations. The group has seen some great initiatives adopted, such as introducing composting bins in the workplace, and Connor hopes this will inspire people to adopt similar practices in their homes.

Sue Starr has been an environmental activist and educator for 32 years. Sue’s main passion is to help people become more sustainable and environmentally aware in the way that they live their day to day lives. She has inspired and informed countless people to change their everyday practices to reduce their environmental impact.

Connor was also a strong advocate for the Esperance Shire Council joining the Cities Power Partnership, which it did in 2019. The Cities Power Partnership is a network of local governments across Australia that supports the councils with knowledge and resources, to take meaningful action on climate change.

Connor has always been passionate about caring for our environment. ‘When I was little, I was obsessed with things like recycling,’ he says. ‘I would pester friends and family about it all the time.’ As an adult, Connor continues to demonstrate his passion for environmental causes in his own life. He drives a plug-in hybrid car and has been involved in a push to install a network of high-speed EV charging stations from Perth to Esperance.

Connor is a trainee CAD technician at the Shire. He has also been involved in the local Army Cadets. ‘I was in the Army Cadets when I was younger, and I’ve started helping out with them now, just as a way to give back to the community.’ Connor is encouraged by some of the things that are taking place in Esperance to make the town more sustainable. He hopes that people will continue to become more aware of their own impact, and how small changes can make a huge difference.

Most recently, Sue became concerned about the amount of textile waste that is being sent to landfill every day around the world. ‘Fast fashion’ and an abundance of cheaply made clothing has made this a growing issue. Across Australia, we send an estimated 85% of the textiles that we buy to landfill each year.

While op-shops are an important part of the solution, an increasing amount of clothing that is donated is not fit to be sold in op-shops. Op-shops in Esperance send an estimated 500 kilograms of textile waste to the tip every week. Sue is on a mission to see that changed, liaising with local op-shops, the Esperance Shire, and an organisation in Perth called Eco Pay it Forward which sees clothing that would be destined for landfill recycled in a number of ways.

Sue hopes that people are becoming more aware about these issues, and that we will think twice before buying cheaply made clothing. ‘Even if something seems too cheap to resist, think about what will happen at the end of the item’s life, and in reality, how long will it last?’ She encourages people to shop at op-shops, and to buy ethically made, quality clothing.

‘Everything we do in our own lives has an impact,’ Sue says. ‘Try to keep in mind where we live. This planet is our home, and there really is no planet B.’

BUSH BANTER Hel lo Yel low It seems that every yellow flowering plant is in bloom at the moment, including varieties of Acacia, Hibbertias, Sennas, Conostylis, Hakea cinerea and a couple of stunning plants I recently discovered at the tip this week. After initially thinking they could be a weed (and really hoping that they weren’t), I did some research and found out that they are native to Esperance.

One of the plants – the Senecio pinnatifolius - I have seen around West Beach since I was young. The other little beauty was the Anthocercis littorea or Yellow tailflower. Unfortunately, I haven’t seen this gorgeous plant again. Even on a return trip to the tip it seems to have eluded me. I wondered how they got to the tipface and thought that possibly they were in the seed mix of the first stage of the revegetation project last year. A lovely couple of plants to liven up the place.

It can be difficult to tell the truth sometimes, especially when you know it will hurt the one you love, but relationships are built on trust so do the right thing and own up to whatever it is you’re hiding, even if it might land you in hot water.

If you’re unattached, challenge yourself to go on a date this month with someone who’s not your type. What’s the worst that could happen?

Caesar-Dressed Greens with Chickpea Croutons Not only is this simple salad easy to pull together, it’s damn tasty too. Fresh and zesty, it makes a great light lunch in spring, and is the perfect accompaniment to a BBQ dinner.

Ingredients Chickpea Croutons 1 can chickpeas, drained and rinsed 1 tsp onion powder 1 tsp garlic powder ½ tsp smoked paprika Good pinch of salt Caesar Dressing ¼ cup olive oil 75g silken tofu (or ¼ of a 300g packet) Zest of half a lemon Juice of one lemon 2 tsp Dijon mustard 2 tsp capers 1 tsp caper brine 1 tbsp nutritional yeast (see note) Good pinch of salt and pepper Salad Whole lettuce of your choice, leaves torn to your liking 1 punnet cherry tomatoes, halved lengthways and seasoned well Extra nutritional yeast or shaved parmesan, to serve Handful of toasted flaked almonds, to serve

Method 1. In a medium mixing bowl, place chickpeas, onion powder, garlic powder, smoked paprika and salt.

Mix well to coat evenly.

2. Spread chickpeas evenly on a baking tray and place into a cold oven. Turn the oven to 200°C and roast for 40 minutes, or until chickpeas are browned and crunchy.

3. To make the Caesar dressing, place all ingredients in a blender and blend on high until they come together and the dressing is smooth and creamy.

4. To make the salad, toss the lettuce and cherry tomatoes together.

5. Once the chickpeas are out of the oven and cool, add them to the salad, before drizzling over the Caesar dressing and topping with extra nutritional yeast or parmesan, and toasted flaked almonds.

6. Serve and enjoy!

Lucky Bay Brewing can now claim they produce one of the best beers in WA, after winning the Best Lager Draught award at the prestigious Perth Royal Beer Awards. Up against many well-known names, the Esperance brewers took home the Cryer Malt Trophy for their COVID special, the Lockdown Dark Lager.

Pink Lake might soon be pink again, after the Esperance Shire Council decided to undertake a trial to pump salt brine from Lake Warden to the once-pink lake. The famous hue of the lake faded over years due to the excess removal of salt, while the adjacent Lake Warden has a salt accumulation problem. The pumping of salt from Lake Warden to Pink Lake is expected to be mutually beneficial for both lakes.

A documentary about sharks, filmed off the coast of Esperance, aired in the United States during the Discovery Channel’s highly popular Shark Week. ‘Lair of the Great White’, presented by American marine biologist Dr Craig O’Connell, was filmed without baiting the sharks, differentiating it from most shark documentaries. Several locals were involved in the project.

The Australian premier of feature film Dirt Music, filmed partly in Esperance, was held at the CinefestOZ Film Festival in Busselton on August 29. Based on the Tim Winton novel of the same name, filming locations included Cape Le Grand National Park and the Gibson Soak Hotel. The film is expected to be shown in Esperance later in the year.

I have trades in building and construction, civil construction, rigging and I’m currently doing a Diploma in Building and Construction.

I’ve been in the building industry for 16 years, give or take.

That’s a hard call. I’m a bit partial to both so I’ll sit on the fence with that one.

What’s the best part of your job?

Solving problems and getting good results, plus we get to travel around the district, so we aren’t just stuck in one place all the time What’s the worst?

Trying to solve the near-impossible problems and bad weather. The weather is a big factor in our job.

Where’s the best spot to get smoko in Esperance?

We go to Bay of Isles Lunch Bar on Norsy Road...Thumbs up!

What do you enjoy most about living and working in Esperance?

The best things about Espy, for me, are the people are friendly and pretty laid back, and you have the freedom to go to amazing beaches and campsites. Also, it isn’t a rat race, my family is here and it’s my hometown. It’s a great place to live.

If you could change or improve something in town, what would it be?

Hmm. Defs the town boat ramp - it could do with a decent upgrade to make it more user friendly. And the parking situation in town central can be quite challenging at times, even when it’s not holiday season.

Lastly, tell us something about yourself that no one knows…

Ever since I did my trade schooling back in Vic, I’ve always liked the idea of becoming a TAFE teacher to train apprentices. I think it would be very rewarding and a good job to go into in the latter part of my working life.
