The social calendar has stayed busy, largely thanks to Kyza, Cannery Arts Centre and Esperance Travellers Inn, putting on nights even wilder than the Mos Eisley Cantina. Be sure to get your Ash Grunwald tickets, pronto. Of course, with winter sports now in full swing, things are about to get as competitive as Anakin Skywalker in the Boonta Eve Podrace and we can’t wait to see it all unfold. On a more serious note, we hope you like the new edition. We sincerely apologise to all the non-Star Wars fans of Esperance, but to quote Han Solo, “You like us because we’re scoundrels. Just as great music tracks embed themselves in our psyche and play over and over again as the soundtrack to our lives, amazing movie scores have that exact same ability to resonate.

Often cinematic music becomes as recognisable as the characters or great scenes from movies themselves.

The Star Wars theme song is one such piece of music—as I’m listening to it now I’ve engaged in armwaving motions as if I am some great conductor, my heart skips a little with the nostalgia. Captured in this composition is everyone’s memory of Star Wars. I’m taken back to the first time I saw A New Hope. Sitting on my grandmother’s floor, no fanfare, just a VHS I pulled from the pile, no prior introduction by parents or peers, theme music begins, words scroll (I guess I could read) and then I’m relentlessly drawn into a fantastic world that would be a highlight of

my young life. How many lightsaber fights ensued over the next weeks as I relentlessly hunted down the following two movies. Lightsaber fights intensified by either a hummed theme song or a deathly imperial march.

In a greatly changed music market, a number of notable original artists and bands lend their hands to developing music for cinema. Explosions In The Sky are an experimental post-rock act whose music is mostly instrumental, their songs described as ‘cathartic mini symphonies’. I love these guys down to the ground and was not in the least surprised when I began to see their music used across a number of visual mediums. Who knows, maybe there is room for an amazing original act to develop something as memorable as the Star Wars theme song? Stranger things have certainly happened.

There is nothing I love more than a big ol’ bowl of wedges.

It’s the perfect snack after a night of a few too many. It’s the perfect meal if you’re not too hungry but you need a lil stomach filing and you’re craving that atomic flavour. You can share them between a crowd of two or ten. And I really don’t even mind when you’re halfway through and there’s no sour cream and sweet chilli left because the salty, tangy, spicy seasoning is good enough. Many eateries are phasing out this beautiful creation and according to Wikipedia, the number of bars, cafes and restaurants that serve wedges across Australia has rapidly decreased in recent years. Now is the time to cause some commotion and bring this once-popular delicacy back into the hearts and lives of the common citizen of Esperance.

We will never tire of taking pride in our local native plants’ uniqueness and occasionally, ridiculous weirdness. Over the course of the last millenium, our region has survived an ice age and other events to produce some plants that look like they would not look out of place on an alien planet being cared for by an Ewok, Wookie or even part of Darth Vader’s garden.

The Fitzgerald River National Park apparently escaped the ice age and hence has the largest variety of plants completely unique to the area.

They are like nothing you will see anywhere else.

The Hakea victoria is the first that comes to mind, the unusual plant is a real head-turner and has been spotted in some local gardens in Esperance growing quite nicely.

Take for example our Kangaroo paw, with its fuzzy claw-like flowers, quite at home growing in the most inhospitable conditions. Then, of course, our banksias with their band-saw looking leaves and angry man-like seed heads that have to be scorched by flames to open up.

The list goes on for weird and wonderful plants in our region but sometimes we have to take a closer look to really appreciate their unique characteristics. May the force of nature be with you.

STARGAZING IN ESPERANCE Parked up on the edge of the southern ocean, we are lucky down here not to suffer from too much light pollution when it comes to viewing our night skies. We’re one of the few places on earth you can see the super rare Aurora Australis from, but beyond that, there’s heaps of other good stuff going on in our night skies these days. Whether you’re camping or just looking up at the sky from home, be sure to take a moment to spot these beauties.

Scorpio This creepy constellation is a bit harder to see, so it’s a good one for anyone up to a challenge. It rises in the east at about 8.30pm. It sits beneath Jupiter, just above the eastern horizon. The first thing you’ll notice is the ‘supergiant’ bright red star Antares, also known as the ‘Heart of Scorpio’. From there, you should be able to make out its claws and long, winding body.

Southern Cross

The Mighty Boosh Moon’s second-bestfriend Jupiter is a good one for amateur or lazy stargazers. It’s been rising in the east at about 6.30pm. Despite being at least 588 million kilometres away at any given time, we can still see Jupiter from here because it’s so huge. In fact, 1300 earths would fit inside Jupiter, which makes you feel a bit sick, really.

Bogan Australia’s favourite constellation, the Southern Cross is not only actually quite beautiful but has also proven quite useful to navigators now and again. To find it, look directly southeast, just after dark or quite early in the early evening.

You will see two bright pointer stars that will then lead your eyes to the cross.

Venus You’re probably quite familiar with the star of Venus—it’s usually the brightest star in the sky, rising in the northwest right after sunset. Unlike Jupiter, Venus is more moderate in size, almost the exact same size as earth. The reason we can see it so clearly is because it’s surrounded by thick cloud cover, which the sun takes as an opportunity to reflect off so we don’t forget about it once it’s gone to bed.

Magellanic clouds Ever wanted to visit another galaxy? Located beneath the Southern Cross and to the right a little bit, you may notice two sets of clouds— one big and one small. They’re called ‘Magellanic Clouds’, but guess what? They’re not really clouds.

They’re actually two satellite galaxies located far, far away. If that fact doesn’t impress your date, then who knows what will.

The essential psychology of the Star Wars universe is all about mindfulness. ‘The Force’ is about being present, addressing your negative emotions and channelling them into positive energy. Anakin Skywalker is basically the poster boy for anxiety and trauma and ultimately, Darth Vader is the result of fear, grief and something called ‘experiential avoidance’, ie. the opposite of mindfulness. There’s a lot that can be learnt from the saga when it comes to state of mind, so I’ve picked out three top tips for all you budding Jedis out there.

“The greatest teacher, failure is.”

Ahhh, Yoda. Always hitting us with the truth.

When Luke is busy sulking in The Last Jedi, he chips him with a reminder to not only pass on his wisdom and strength but also his weakness and failure. It’s a classic reminder that life is not just about our shining moments but our royal stuff ups, too. While it’s great to share our success stories, why not try and teach someone about your own failure to help them not make the same mistake?

“Be mindful of the future, but not at the expense of the moment.”

If this isn’t mindfulness 101, I don’t know what is. To an anxious Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon Jinn tells him, “Don’t centre on your anxieties … keep your concentration here and now, where it belongs”.

We all love to antagonise about the past and the future, and the best real way to ease that anxiety is by tuning back into the present. Meditation is one of the best ways to go about that.

“That place … is strong with the dark side of the Force. A domain of evil it is. In you must go.”

No human is perfectly good or irrevocably bad.

As Yoda reminds us, there is light and dark in all of us. Exploring and feeling all our emotions, from love and joy to anger and sadness, is key to staying in a healthy headspace. Don’t be ashamed of your emotions, nothing is ‘good’ or ‘bad’. Your emotions are only messengers, and all of them make up the Force. It’s easy to be ashamed of feelings, but try not to snuff them out just to be cured of things faster.

It takes years for a Padawan to become a Jedi. While it won't take you that long to learn mindfulness, it's definitely something that requires a long-term commitment and can be exhausting. In a chaotic galaxy, try to put down the smartphone from time to time and be present.

Last time I watched The Empire Strikes Back, the early relationship between Luke Skywalker and Yoda humoured me endlessly because it reminded me of my grandkids. Luke is impatient and sceptical of Yoda, who is trying to teach him about the Force. The art of taking advice is tough at all ages, but I can see how it’s particularly hard for the younger gen, hormones aside.

My grandkids are constantly inundated with rules, career guidance and ethical dilemmas in a changing world I sometimes feel like I no longer understand. We live in an age where everyone seems to have an opinion about everything and even a little too much freedom to share it. It can be hard to sieve through the constant barrage of bizarrely contradicting lines like ‘be authentic’ and ‘fake it til you make it’ and ‘dream big’ and ‘keep it real’. The incoming messages are hard to filter, can be eye-rollingly patronising and in many cases, so wrong it’s best to ignore it all together.

The grandkids are right to be wary of those who give advice and to choose their role models wisely. It’s the same approach I take when I’m trying to fix problems with my email—I make sure I choose the right grandkid for the job.

In this modern world, it’s great that people have insatiable access to new information, but it’s also important to be conscious of how reliable and trustworthy the source of it is, and it’s intention.

My grandkids have been raised to always be respectful of their elders and to feel comfortable listening to those who are more experienced on a matter than them. But I also hope they never stop questioning their own ethics, beliefs and influences. That’s the only advice I can give.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

It’s easy to see how Esperance Recovery and Wellness Centre’s oxygen chamber could be met by locals as either space-age hoohah or just accepted as plain common sense. It was registered nurse Dee Bennier’s disappointment with the medical industry’s resistance to holistic approaches to health that compelled her to invest in a hyperbaric oxygen therapy chamber with coowner Karen Civell. Having had friends and family diagnosed with cancer, she researched endlessly the benefits of HBOT when it came to easing nausea and aiding balance for those undergoing chemotherapy or suffering from terminal illness.

HBOT is widely used in sports science and in hospitals in other parts of the world, but it hasn’t yet had approval for proven medical use in Australia. When we were invited to try out a session, it was easy to be optimistic but naturally a little bit sus of process given its status. In a nutshell, HBOT involves pumping air purified to 95 percent oxygen into a chamber and then compressed to the equivalent level of air pressure reached three metres below sea level. The pressure allows additional oxygen to saturate hard-to-reach parts of the body due to inflammation or poor blood circulation. It’s meant to aid brain function and reduce cortisol, helping with anxiety, depression and other mental or physical ailments.

When you climb into the chamber and lie down, it’s physically comfortable but obviously a little unnerving. It’s spacious—not as claustrophobic as it looks—a bit like sleeping in a swag. As the air pressure changes, your ears start popping. It’s exactly like descending in an aeroplane or diving deep underwater. Dee talks you through the process to keep you calm and you really start to see how breathing plays an important role in the whole process and its benefits. Once you reach the intended air pressure, she leaves you to relax.

It’s a great opportunity for a decent time out—a chance to focus on meditation or even have a snooze.

Like typical overstimulated millenials, we do get a bit bored in there. With more sessions, once you get more used to the process, it would no doubt get easier to relax and you could probably go in there for very, very relaxing sleep. But we can’t help but feel like next time we’d opt to listen to music, even if the phone is left on airplane mode. After a while, I was interested to discover my body felt like it was heating up internally while my skin remained cool to touch. It was unexpected—while I was open to the mental benefits of deep breathing in an almost-pure oxygen chamber, I wasn’t expecting a physical reaction to the exposure.

Eventually, Dee returns to the room and talks you through the process as the air pressure is restored and you emerge back into the land of the living. It feels good—you feel lighter, renewed. It’s a similar feeling to the endorphins and mental clarity that comes after a good workout. The whole session itself is really relaxing—a nice chance to slow down—but the best part is how you feel afterwards. It’s a real, lasting energy booster and you’ll likely sleep like a baby that night.

It’s an interesting process showing plenty of scientific signs of promise. From stress relief to sporting injuries, it’s curious to know how it would impact different people in different states. Even if you couldn’t afford to commit to a few sessions, a one-hour session would give you a good chance to settle in, get accustomed and reap the benefits.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy may look and sound like the stuff of a sci fi movie, but when you experience it for yourself, you’ll realise it’s really not such an alien concept.

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

Olive oil 2 garlic cloves 200g semi-sundried tomatoes 400g mushrooms 300ml cream 1x brown onion Fresh basil Fresh fettuccine Bocconcini Salt & pepper

1. Cook the fettuccine according to the packet, or be even more daring and make your own. Drain, toss some olive oil through it and set aside.

2. Dice your brown onion and garlic. Add to fry pan with some olive oil.

3. Add the mushrooms and season with some salt and pepper. Fry away until the mushies are cooked.

4. Add the sundried tomatoes, give it a two-minute stir and then add your cream. Let the sauce boil and simmer.

5. Tear up some basil and add it to the mix, the sauce is now done.

6. Stir the sauce through the fettuccine. Serve with torn pieces of bocconcini, as you wish.

Annihilation Netflix’s hugely successful entry into the ‘high-end scifi’ market, Annihilation is a beautiful, harrowing, utterly nonsensical movie.

With Natalie Portman in the lead role, the film is set in a biological wonderland that looks like live-action Studio Ghibli countryside and expresses just as much Hayao Miyazaki wonder at the supernatural. Of course, the premise of the film is a little more grim. Ex-military biology professor Lena (Portman) is sent to ‘Area X’, the location of a mysterious domeshaped forcefield of which her gravely ill military husband has been the only survivor. The forcefield is called ‘The Shimmer’ and it is unknown whether it’s “a religious event, an extraterrestrial event, a higher dimension”.

There are plenty of plot gaps—mostly unexplained, some rattled off vaguely in passing conversation. There’s no real explanation as to why an all-female unit is sent into the Shimmer next or why they let the grieving wife join them.

Character development is limited, only Portman’s Lena is treated to a perplexingly unnecessary backstory. The film stumbles a wobbly line between what is meaningful and what is entertainment value, finally collapsing into a captivating, ambiguous mess. But the ambiguity provides plenty of food for thought, and certainly piques interest in the wonder of cell mutation and science itself.

Sensical or not, Annihilation is a visual delight, which rather than playing on our fear of the unknown, does well to relish in the mystery of it.

The waves have been pretty good lately by all accounts, for Esperance standards, anyway.

Having had fun waves mixed with camping, fishing—we blamed the full moon and crabs for our lack of success—and beach exploring added up to an intergalactic adventure.

We met creatures from what appeared to be different planets. A couple of Jabba the Hutts wallowing in beer and fish and some Han Solos and Obi-Wan Kenobis doing their alone time, searching for waves. I might have seen a Luke and Leia with r2d2 and C-3PO fighting the Force invading their seclusion with Stormtroopers and drones. Around the campfire, I met a Yoda until later on, a Chewbacca came out. I only saw one full moon, though.

When winter gets too much, maybe a surf trip worlds away and with lightspeed is in order. But between now and then, ‘May the surf be with you’.
