As we hit the back end of Autumn feeling that desire to drop everything and head to Bali for the week, why not try something new instead. Some ideas for you: a pilates class with Sunset Pilates, a night at of comedy at the Civic Centre or a history lesson at the Museum–there’s a good chance you haven’t been since that school excursion in year 6.

The pod of around 50 killer whales surrounded the blue whale and took turns to attack it before enjoying a whale-sized feast. Researcher John Totterdell explains that this is a significant observation, as killer whales aren’t known to attack and kill larger adult whales. In fact, there has only been one other documented account of killer whales attacking an adult blue whale, and in that case, the blue whale was able to escape.

John, Rebecca and renowned marine researcher Robert Pitman were recently part of a team that made a breakthrough in killer whale research while on a trip to the notorious ‘Drake Passage’ off the southern tip of Chile.

The researchers observed a large group of Sub-Antarctic killer whales identified as ‘Type D’, possibly a genetically distinct group with blunt heads, tall pointy dorsal fins and very small white eye patches. ‘Type D’ killer whales were previously observed only once when a group of them were beached in New Zealand around 60 years ago. The ‘Type D’ killer whales were thought to be a genetic aberration. It is amazing that such large animals have gone undocumented for so long. John stated, “In this time of diminishing biodiversity, we’ve found a big, strange, different looking killer whale that we didn’t know was out there. This was an animal that scientists thought had died out.”

The area around Bremer Bay is a unique and very significant area for marine research. It is the only offshore location past the continental shelf where researchers have been able to observe the same killer whales in the same location, year after year. There are nutrient-rich upwellings in several canyons off the coast of Bremer Bay which attract rich sea life to the area, including pilot whales, sperm whales, common and striped dolphins, giant squid and a variety of other sea life as well as the killer whales. John and the other CETREC researchers have been able to identify around 200 individual killer whales around the Bremer Bay area. Each individual killer whale has unique identification marks on their dorsal fin, eye patch, and saddle patch.

Photographing and documenting these markings is the most common way that individual animals are identified.

Sometimes the team also takes biopsy samples, which also allows them to identify sex, diet and familial relationships to other killer whales. Occasionally satellite tags are also used to monitor movements and dive profiles of the separate smaller family groups.

As for the attack and killing of the blue whale by the killer whale pod near Bremer Bay, it is unclear what significance this event has at this stage. Perhaps it is a sign that food stocks late in the season are becoming low for the killer whales in the area? Perhaps the animals are becoming bolder and may attack other adult whales in future? Whatever may unfold, it is certain that the Bremer Bay area will continue to play a significant part in research on killer whales. The ocean is a place of great mystery and wonder, particularly in this biodiversity hotspot. We will be watching with great interest to see what other amazing discoveries are made by researchers in this area, and look forward to learning more about the fascinating killer whales.

whale watching around esperance Killer whales are not seen around Esperance very often, but have been spotted occasionally, with a sighting a year ago around Cape le Grand. Southern right whales are more often seen in the Bay at Esperance, as they migrate from the Bight. Sightings usually occur in winter and spring. Humpbacks are also sometimes seen off the coast of Esperance, more often in early winter.

Esperance local John Totterdell has been studying sea life around the Esperance region and WA’s south coast for over thirty years, yet the ocean still regularly surprises him. Together with his research team (CETREC WA) and colleague Rebecca Wellard, John has been studying killer whales for years off the coast of Bremer Bay and further north. Killer whales are the ocean’s top predators, and are intelligent and highly social animals. Their species name is Orca, currently the only remaining species in the genus Orcinus, and they are often referred to as Orcas, although scientists usually still use the common name killer whale.

In the same family as dolphins, killer whales demonstrate sophisticated hunting techniques and a range of vocal behaviours. They are known to regularly kill smaller whales and the calves of larger whales such as humpbacks, taking several hundred humpback calves from the tropical Ningaloo region each season. This bloodthirsty behaviour is an important energy source for the recovering killer whale populations and also serves an important ecological function in keeping the humpback population from getting beyond carrying capacity.

Welcome back to another food review by yours truly.

First, we covered breakfast wraps, then the good ol' fashioned toastie, and now it is time for the true king of the sanga, the almighty burger, to be put to the test.

What I love about a burger is that it’s a real handful.

There is no messing around when it comes to this culinary feast. It requires two hands to devour, and a good burger is a testament to a chef’s creative prowess. While a slab of meat and cheese between two buns seems pretty simple, you might be surprised; the possibilities are endless. Strap yourself in and get ready to feel hungry!

Talk about a bloody good deal. This burger comes in at $16, and for that, you will get precisely what its name describes: a burger as big as the whole bay. This thing is a monster. You can order it at the bar, but you might need to go and hide in a corner while you eat it, so that cute girl across the bar doesn’t bear witness to what an animal you are... unless of course she’s into that kind of thing, in which case go for gold, son!

There is something really nostalgic about this burger. Maybe it’s the buns from IGA or the slab of beetroot. The simplicity of this ensemble is like the one your mum made when you were a kid because you wanted MacDonald’s, and instead of enjoying it for the homemade bliss that it is, you spat the dummy because it wasn’t the same.

But years later, you realise what a brat you were and go to apologise but she has already forgiven you, and now you would do almost anything for one of your mum's burgers again. That's what this burger tastes like, Mum’s burgers. If you’re reading this Mum, do you want to do burgers this week?

You need the jaws of a python just to make a start on this towering beast. The big fat patty, arguably the most crucial part of a burger, is herby and delicious. Follow that up with beetroot, onion and all the salads, and you have a winning burger that goes down well with a couple of pints from our local. Served with chips on a fancy cutting board, my only complaint is that they’ve taken away the Thursday special that comes with a pint. It's still a great burger for the price.

For $16 with chips, you can’t go wrong. They have a great selection of drinks to wash it down too.

Big Bob’s Kitchen There is a lot I could say about Bob's burgers. My gut rumbles at the thought of tackling the biggest, baddest burgers in town. With homemade sauce and patties to boot, Bob isn’t shy about his burgers. One of them is even called 'The Gut Buster' and to be completely honest, I am too afraid to even try the mammoth quad burger out of fear for my safety – although that's not to say I haven’t been tempted.

Instead, I opted for a lighter option, and I say that ironically because 'The French Connection' has an entire slab of deep fried camembert cheese. At first, I wasn’t sure what to think.

As the self-described 'home of comfort food', I thought this thing might just knock into a state of comatose burger bliss.

And that's exactly what it did. This isn’t just a meal, it’s an experience! Winning Triple M’s best burger award as well as my heart, Bob has definitely upped the burger game in this town. If beef isn’t your thing, then he also has deep-fried chicken burgers, and while I haven’t tried one yet I hear it’s tasty. Anyway, enough about Bob, I’m salivating.

The Travel ler’s Inn The Trav’s wins the cheapest burger award, even beating the local fast food joints, with its massive $12 lunchtime special. With a choice between chicken or beef, this is one of my favourite lunchtime treats during the week. I mean, it does help that the burger is often served by a charming barmaid. I am a fan of the chicken burger, as they use a chicken schnitzel that hangs out of the bun like a pair of wings. Served with thick-cut chips, this is a great place to stop for lunch.

For the burgers, of course.

Aghh, my favourite place to take a date also happens to be home to one of my favourite burgers. What a coincidence.

This burger is truly amazing. What separates the Quarters’ burger from the rest of the pack are the buns. While it seems so trivial, these buns are made in the kitchen. They are so fresh that I often wonder if that warmth is from the burger, or did this bun come straight from the oven? So soft and crunchy and slightly sweet and perfectly toasted.

Its attention to detail and pursuit of perfection makes this burger truly delicious. With caramelised onion and picturesque melted cheese, this is unquestionably the bestlooking burger. While the other burgers try to knock you out with brute force, this burger is more about finesse, and I really appreciate that because TSQ has a great selection of sides to fill up on.

Their unique style of crumbed chicken is also crunchy and delicious if you choose a chicken burger over beef. The other great thing about the Quarters is that you will have vegan and vegetarian options (another reason I take my dates there because you never know). I still can’t stop thinking about those buns, the burger buns that is. TSQ wins the best gourmet burger in my books, and while they sit on the pricier end of the scale given the fantastic location, the price is well justified. And besides, you came here to impress your date so money should be no matter, right?

That about sums up my burger review. A tie between the Quarters and Big Bob’s Kitchen. I am really impressed with both of these local restaurants who have created burgers that in my opinion are better than some of the burgers at gourmet chains springing up all over the city. I don’t want to play favourites, but will try and strum up some rivalry for the sake of friendly competition as we strive to achieve burger perfection. The burgers really are better in Esperance!

In 1924, a bill passed through both houses of Australian Parliament in a single day, making it compulsory for all Australians who were ‘British Subjects’ to vote in Federal elections. Since then, Australia has been one of only 22 countries worldwide where voting in elections is compulsory, and one of only 10 who actually enforce compulsory voting. We are the only English-speaking country with compulsory voting.

Australia has also been very innovative in other areas of our democratic system – we were one of the first countries worldwide to use a secret ballot for voting - the secret ballot system is sometimes known as the ‘Australian Ballot’. Before the secret ballot was introduced, voters would just shout out their votes to the electoral official. At this time, elections would often take place at pubs, and politicians would ‘buy’ votes with beer or cash.

Australia is also one of the only countries in the world to have voting on a Saturday – perhaps leading to the ‘party’ atmosphere of some polling booths, with sausage sizzles (selling ‘Democracy Sausages’) and cake stalls. Of course, we were one of the first countries in the world to give women the vote, and South Australia can claim the honour of being the first state in the world to allow women to stand for public office. We were even one of the first countries to use a ‘booth’ for voting to give voters privacy.

We are not advanced in every area, though. It wasn’t until 1962 that all Indigenous Australians were given the vote.

Our unique system of democracy is something we should keep in mind on May 18, when Australians all over the country head to the polls. This election seems to be a very close race. The Coalition of the Liberal and National parties is facing off against the Labor party, with either Scott Morrison or Bill Shorten likely to be the Prime Minister when the dust settles. This is not a given, as of course here in Australia we seem to change our Prime Minister more often than we do our underwear, as the saying goes. In fact, it’s been 12 years since a Prime Minister in Australia served a full term! This is worth keeping in mind as we decide who to vote for – we should look at the party’s policies rather than the leader’s personality.

So is compulsory voting a good thing? In the USA, around 55% of eligible voters cast their votes in Presidential elections. Canada had their highest voter turnout in 20 years in the 2015 election, with 68% of registered voters turning out to vote.

In countries that don’t have compulsory voting, it is often young people and those who are lowerincome or from minority groups who don’t vote.

As a result, politicians don’t consider the needs or views of these groups as closely. In Australia, compulsory voting makes people get involved with our democratic system, meaning that politicians have to consider all sectors of society in their policies.

Compulsory voting has also meant that here in Australia, we are quite engaged with our democratic system. So as you head off to vote later this month, you can do so with pride that you are involved in a unique and robust democratic system. Young people who are enrolled to vote should also pat themselves on the back, as youth enrolment is currently at an all-time high of 88.8% for 18 to 24-year-olds. If you’re unsure of who to vote for, there are sites such as www.votecompass.abc.net.au that can help you work out how to vote according to your values. Don’t forget to grab a democracy sausage and stock up on popcorn. It’s going to be an interesting one! In their recent elections, Ukraine elected a TV comedian as President, so who knows where we are heading.

Australia has a preferential voting system, which is another very unique part of our voting system. For those who are a little rusty on how this works, voters get to number their choices on their voting sheet in order of their preference. If no one gets an absolute majority of votes, then the person with the least votes is eliminated, and their votes redistributed according to the second preferences. In the Senate, voters also have the choice to vote above the line – allowing their chosen party to distribute their preferences – or below the line, numbering each candidate’s box. The preferential voting system makes it possible for a lot of independent politicians and minor parties to have an influence. For example, in the recently contested seat of Wentworth, Independent Kerryn Phelps got 29% of the vote, compared with Liberal Dave Sharma’s 43%, but after the secondary distribution of preferences, she won with 51%. It also means that voting for a minor party or independent politician is not ‘wasting your vote’. Minor parties and Independents could possibly have a lot of influence in this election. And they’re fighting for it! Clive Palmer’s United Australia Party has already spent more on election advertising than both major parties combined in the leadup to the last election.

We are part of the O’Connor electorate here in Esperance. O’Connor is one of the largest electoral constituencies in the world, covering over 868,000 square kilometres. The WA electorate that covers the north of our state, Durack, is even larger, being around the same size as Mexico! Albany, Kalgoorlie, and Esperance are all part of O’Connor. The seat has always been held by a conservative politician, and currently is held by Liberal Rick Wilson. There are 7 candidates for the seat in this election.

dealing with anxiety IT MAY BE A FAMILIAR FEELING: SHORTNESS OF BREATH, AND A FEELING OF TIGHTNESS IN THE CHEST. It may be tightly clenched teeth, tensed muscles, and the feeling of being as tight as a bowstring. It can include sweating, stomach pains, headaches, and the feeling of being paralysed by fear. It probably also includes an intense fear of something irrational, or even something unknown.

Sufferers will probably recognise these feelings as symptoms of anxiety.

Anxiety is not uncommon. In fact, anxiety conditions are the most commonly diagnosed mental health conditions in Australia. According to Beyond Blue, one-quarter of all Australians will experience anxiety in their lifetimes. One in seven Australians currently experience anxiety conditions.

Anxiety can cause sufferers to avoid social events, miss work, and struggle with everyday functioning. The effects of anxiety should not be minimised, as it can be a very debilitating condition. Many people need professional intervention and medication to deal with anxiety. Of course, feeling anxious once in a while is not necessarily an anxiety condition. It’s normal for people to have feelings of anxiety in stressful situations, such as coming up to a test or a deadline, when experiencing relationship breakdowns or financial difficulties.

Good coping strategies can help with this kind of short term anxiety as well.

Fortunately, anxiety doesn’t have to control your life. With proper support, anxiety can be managed and treated with great success.

When dealing with anxiety, the first and most important step is to get some professional support. Your GP or local Community Mental Health would be a good starting point, and there are a range of other options available.

There are a lot of other strategies that can help you manage anxiety, both in the short term if you’re experiencing the symptoms of an anxiety attack, and in the longer term.

Here are a few suggestions. Find something that suits you personally, and don’t forget that this is just the tip of the iceberg.

what to do when you’re having a panic attack

• Slow down your breathing – count to three as you breathe in, and then count to three as you breathe out • Use the ‘5 things’ strategy to help ground yourself – look around and identify 5 things you can see, smell, hear, touch, and taste

• Monitor your thoughts – are they adding to your anxiety? You may need to challenge irrational negative thoughts. If you’re finding this hard to do, chat to a trusted friend or counsellor about it.

strategies for reducing anxiety

• Try counselling. Counselling can help you get to the root of anxiety issues, and a mental health professional can help you to develop some great strategies to deal with your anxiety.

• Check out some Cognitive Behaviour Therapy strategies. CBT focuses on challenging and changing unhelpful and damaging thought patterns and improving emotional regulation and coping strategies and can be very effective for reducing anxiety.

• Confide in some trusted friends and family. It can be important that your close friends and family understand what you are going through. You may be able to suggest some ways that they can support and help you.

• Face your fears. It may seem counterintuitive, but if you always avoid the things that make you feel fearful and anxious, your anxiety will only increase over time. Taking small steps, facing your fears can help you to see that what you fear is actually not as bad as it seems.

• Try relaxation techniques. What works for you? For some, it may be yoga or meditation. For others, it might be a warm bath or a walk on the beach. Practising regular relaxation techniques can be really great for your overall mental health.

• Eat a balanced diet and exercise.

Exercise often plays a part in successfully recovering from mental health conditions, and as a bonus, good nutrition and exercise will make you feel great. It doesn’t have to be a gruelling gym session. Even gentle exercise such as walking is great.

• Get support. If anxiety is really affecting your life, then a mental health professional will be able to help.

Anxiety is tough. One of the most important things you can do to reduce anxiety is to be kind to yourself.

Don’t let your anxiety make you feel defective or inferior. Instead, aim for kind self-talk, and celebrating even the smallest achievements that you make. Take opportunities to do things that you enjoy – getting out of your own head for a while and doing something that you really love will do wonders for your mental health. It may be skydiving, surfing, or belly dancing, or just laughing at some trashy TV with a friend, but you might just be amazed at how much it helps. And finally, don’t let anxiety define you. You are a unique and wonderful person, and anxiety is only one part of your life experience.

Hip hop is growing close to my heart. I have developed a profound respect for the wordsmithery required to put together an outstanding track, and conversations with hip hop artists are always lyric-based for me, just as the art is.

Dr Tasty, a.k.a. Morgan Kelly, has been on fire lately.

Summer 2018/19 saw her perform her first gigs, each performance growing progressively in confidence and energy. Tasty writes mad verses, and I’m super pumped to see her return to Esperance this May. She won’t be alone, and I’m absolutely rapt to welcome Kalgoorlie-based artist MissGenius to our fair shores.

MissGenius is old school and her wordplay is really impressive. I first met MG in Kalgoorlie where she supported Grand Casual and The Tapping Sticks on the Kalgoorlie leg of the WAM Esperance-Goldfields tour.

Her first performance blew our minds, and since then MG has racked up some crazy gigs and released some brilliant material. Don’t take my word for it - check her Facebook page, you won’t regret it.

On the hunt to round out the lineup, I got really lucky. Altty, one of the three behind Perth hip hop act The Manhattan Project, has recently moved back to Esperance (fortuitous I’m sure). Altty joins the lineup, adding another jewel into the crown of what will be a banging night. To round her out is local DJ Sheldon Broughton, lighting it up on the decks for all your evening feels. Get along and treat yourself, the Pier Hotel’s front bar on Saturday May 11th from 8.30pm. Free entry to all you lovely Esperance peeps.

I’m on a bit of a high, writing this as Esther drives the car slowly but surely, making our way home from a stellar ten days in Perth. Grand Casual spent four unbelievable days in the studio with Andy Lawson at Debaser. Fair to say it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. At one stage I honestly shed a little tear as the banging new track GO slowly took shape. Sets at the Beaufort Street Songwriters Club and Sewing Room were golden, thanks to everyone who popped along to support, and big ups to Mark Neal for being a dead set legend. Yesterday was spent destroying and rebuilding the culture with Jonty Scoble, Matt Cooper and Joseph Franzone as we wandered about the tall buildings taking some classic pics. Thanks Jonty, you legend. Needless to say we are insanely pumped to share this music with you, though in the vein of the final season of Game Of Thrones, these tracks will remain close to the heart until the time is right. Stay tuned, I’m excited.

Criticism vs Praise We all like to be complimented. Imagine you are in a group at an event and someone notices your new clothes, haircut or laughs at your jokes. It feels good to get this positive attention. However, what happens when even just one person in the group doesn’t join in the praise by staying silent or gives you an eye roll?

I’m sure all of us have experienced this at sometime and I would put money on it that it’ s the negative response that will stick in your mind. Don’t stress because this is just brain science. To our brain, bad things are typically more alluring than good things. Our old brains are wired to respond to threat, but unfortunately, have a tendency to include criticism as a risk. Praise releases oxytocin but this hit only lasts a few minutes in the bloodstream whereas cortisol revs right up for at least an hour or two in response to negativity. Us humans we are prisoners of a theory called socialself-preservation. In other words, like it or not we are motivated to be socially accepted and liked.

Being criticised, insulted or rejected especially publicly, really causes havoc with this inbuilt need to be liked and part of the group. What is even more interesting is that you actually don’t even need someone else to criticise you to active your threat system because as you know doubt have discovered that even if no one is bagging you that brain of your is pretty good at making creating its own stories about how tight your new jeans are, how bad your hair looks or how lame your jokes are!

4. Place the kale in a large bowl, dress and toss. Add the lentils, golden raisins, and pepitas and toss gently.

5. Adjust salt and pepper and add parmesan cheese as desired.

The Turner of Hearts If you have been lucky enough to visit Cape Le Grand National Park recently, then you would have noticed the little bundles of bright pink flowers dotted amongst the bush. These are the Verticordia brownii, or pink cauliflower. As little else is flowering at the moment, these plants are taking nature’s centre stage.

Verticordia species are commonly known as feather flowers and are colourful members of the Myrtaceae family. They can be white, orange, pink, bright pink, pale pink, red or yellow and grow mostly in south of Western Australia, providing great splashes of colour across the landscape.

When the French botanist De Candolle described Verticordia as one of Western Australia’s most attractive groups of wildflowers, he was so struck by their beauty that the legend of Venus is thought to have influenced his choice of name. Venus, the Roman goddess of love, was reputed to have the power to beguile and turn the hearts of her suitors.

The Vericordia brownii was among the first of the genus, discovered by Robert Brown while he was engaged as a naturalist and botanist on Matthew Flinders’ circumnavigation of Australia in 1802. It was formally described by René Desfontaines after he was presented with a specimen that Brown had collected at Lucky Bay. The plant was named Chamalaucium brownii in honour of Brown, and this was later changed to Verticordia brownii.

Fickle Game Winter is upon us... or is it?

It seems that the onset of winter-type-weather is still a while off, as late summer easterlies and autumn offshore winds provide us with settled surf conditions.

The odd westerly wind shift and the associated swell present waves to those spots with a decent bank. Um, errgh, hang on, the only spot with a decent bank is West Beach. Crowd numbers were high over the school holidays and weekends with locals jamming the lineups.

Other beaches seem to be under a hangover from last winter, and from the big summer swells that have kept the sand offshore and unconnected to the inside banks. This is set to continue with higher day tides exaggerating the problem. It’s a fickle game we play, “because I’m fast enough to get into trouble but not fast enough to get away,” (Amber Run). The next fortnight at least starts with these conditions, and this is as good as we will get before winter again remakes the beaches for lottery-like odds of getting some proper banks- argh!

John John Florence has again stamped himself as the world’s best by winning the Bells WSL event. Although an outstanding all-round performance surfer, his layback top turns are simply sublime. To the delights and thrills of many onlookers, JJ’s patented move carries him to repeated high scores. The tour moves to Margaret River soon, where JJ has blown onlookers away to win the event in the past. Main Break is a wave highly suited to his style. Daylight is probably the second favourite for Margs; the two-time world champion Hawaiian is also now leading this year’s tour.

In July 1979, Esperance was swept up in a worldwide media frenzy. NASA’s first Space Station, Skylab, was being dragged dangerously close to Earth’s atmosphere. Skylab had been orbiting the Earth for 6 years by this stage.

NASA had been hoping for funds to send a shuttle to Skylab to boost it into a higher orbit, but the funds did not arrive, and so NASA ground controllers confirmed that they were preparing for a controlled re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere. The year before, the USSR’s Cosmos 954 had re-entered the atmosphere, scattering debris over northern Canada. This led to a lot of concern worldwide about Skylab’s re-entry; in the Philippines, the President had to make a televised address to calm public panic.

NASA ground controllers tried to adjust Skylab’s orbit so that the debris from the disintegrating spaceship would land in the Indian Ocean. Due to a slight error in calculations, the debris instead landed hundreds of kilometres further east than anticipated, right over the area stretching from Esperance to Balladonia.

The debris landed around 2:37am on July 12, 1979.

Locals reported hearing a series of sonic booms and seeing a flaming trail in the sky. As newspapers around the world reported the event, a newspaper in San Francisco offered a $10,000 prize to the first person to bring a piece of Skylab to their office within 48 hours of re-entry. 17-year-old Esperance local Stan Thornton made it to San Francisco in time to claim the prize.

First launched in May 1973, Skylab was 36 metres long and 6.7 metres wide, weighing in at 90.6 tonnes. During the launch, a micrometeoroid shield and solar panel were torn off, and another solar panel was damaged, putting the entire mission at risk of damage or running out of power. Astronauts Commander Charles Conrad, Paul Weitz and Joseph Kerwin arrived at the orbiting Skylab space station later that month, on a mission called the Skylab 2. The astronauts conducted a record-breaking 3-hour 25-minute spacewalk in order to successfully repair the damage to the station. The Skylab 2 crew stayed on board the Skylab Station for 28 days, breaking the record of the Soviet Soyuz 11 crew for the longest time spent in space.

During its six years in orbit, Skylab made possible some very significant achievements in space travel. A great many experiments were done on board Skylab, as well as observations and photography of the sun and the Comet Kohoutek. Other experiments involved taking two spiders named Anita and Arabella on board to see how they were able to spin webs in zero gravity. Skylab came equipped with a 45 kilogram IBM computer, which operated successfully during the mission despite only having a 16,000-word memory and a backup system stored on magnetic tape. There were many other ‘firsts’ on Skylab, including the first space shower, which took two and a half hours to use.

The Skylab program cost US$2.2 billion, which would equate to over US$10 billion today. As well as being a significant part of the US space program, Skylab lead to great advancements in our knowledge of space. Skylab also made possible the development of the International Space Station. Around thirty pieces of Skylab have been donated to the Esperance Museum and can be viewed as part of their Skylab display, which is well worth checking out!

The second manned mission to the Skylab Station arrived in July 1973, named the Skylab 3 Mission. The astronauts of Skylab 3 were Commander Alan Bean, Jack Lousma, and Owen Garriott. This mission broke additional records, with a 6-hour 29-minute spacewalk to conduct further repairs to the Station. They also spent a record 59 days in space. The Skylab 4 mission arrived in November of 1973, with Commander Gerald Carr, William Pogue, and Edward Gibson on board. The Skylab 4 once again extended the record of the longest spacewalk to 7 hours and spent a record-breaking 84 days in space. While the Skylab 4 crew were in space, the Soviet Soyuz 13 was launched with 2 Russian astronauts on board. The record of 5 people in space at the same time stood for 9 years.
