The last year we have seen many significant changes in Esperance.

We saw a new coffee and tea house, Cloud 11, open its doors blessing us with locally made and roasted herbal tea and coffee.

Just making into 2019, Lucky Bay Brewery worked all year tirelessly to open their giant wooden rotating door at their new location in Bandy Creek. Tide & Co also relocated, making a move into the Old Matron’s Quarter in Museum Village (very fitting). It was a sad day and an end of an era when we heard Esperance’s Civic Video clsing up shop in April. In great community spirit, we saw more than 600 community members come together to paddle out at the Whale Tail to protest drilling in the Great Australian Bight. And lastly, for those who love a late-night snack, would have been happy as larry to see MacDonalds Esperance go 24 hours. Just to name a few thing...

Cindy Poole has been working with glass since 1995, from her workshop and gallery on Longbottom lane. From humble beginnings, Cindy has grown her gallery into a tourist attraction, featuring beautiful and functional works of art that represent the beauty of Esperance’s unique landscape.

From creating local icons, such as the Esperance Whale Tale, her collaboration with local Jason Wooldridge, to gaining international recognition for her jewellery collection, Cindy has gone from strength to strength as an artist. Among these achievements, Cindy is most proud of the relationships that she has fostered through her work. From training and mentoring her group of ‘Shed Elves’ through to collaborations with other Esperance locals and craftspeople, connections are always at the heart of Cindy’s work.

When it came to this new project, Cindy spent a long time experimenting with reusing different types of glass as a raw material source. ‘Different types of bottles have different properties, and can react differently in the kiln,’ Cindy explains. ‘We had some compatibility issues, so we spent a long time experimenting and testing different types of recycled glass to see what works.’ Cindy was interested in creating ways for bottles to become a part of a ‘circular economy’, rather than just being used once, and then going to landfill. ‘When it comes to recycling, sometimes bottles can be associated with low-value recycling projects. I want to take it to a different level.

I want to show that I can create a lot of value from one bottle.’

While glass bottles are infinitely recyclable, statistics show that only 56% of our glass packaging is recycled in Australia each year. In part, this is due to the high cost of producing glass bottles in Australia. Cindy acknowledges that her recycled collection will not be a high-volume recycling project. But as she says, ‘people often don’t do something because they can’t do it all. But everything that we do can make a difference.’ In her usual style, Cindy is looking to the big picture. She hopes that one day some of the concepts that she has incorporated into this project might be able to be scaled up to higher volume production. ‘It’s about thinking differently about what we buy, and what we do’, Cindy says.

Familiar themes run through Cindy’s work of connecting to the local environment, with some pieces featuring our white Esperance sand, and many of them reflecting the colours and contours of our landscape. The work also offers the opportunity for people to keep connections with significant times in their lives. Cindy explains that a couple could have a water jug and glasses made from wine bottles used at their wedding. ‘Recently, we were commissioned to make a bespoke gift from a winery which utilised the bottles from their own wines.’ With this collection, special occasions are celebrated, and connections are treasured.

This transformation of a simple glass bottle to something with beauty, functionality, and heart, is the small miracle that is at the heart of Cindy’s work. This is what makes Recycled: Cindy Poole such an important new part of the Esperance art landscape.

In the design phase of Recycled: Cindy Poole, Cindy spent time looking around her own home, and asking ‘can I replace this item?’ As a result, the collection contains functional homewares ranging from water glasses and jugs through to lamps, platters, soap dispensers, and vases. ‘With some items, you can still see the essence of the original bottle. With others, they’ve taken on a completely different life.’ The project vision involves a sustainable based body of work that has artistic design merit that can compete with mainstream alternatives across the interior design, hospitality and gift industries.

As with her previous work, collaboration is at the heart of this new project. Cindy has collaborated with local businesses such as Mackenzies Electrical, Wicked Welding, and Chunky Timbers to create some of the pieces in the collection.

Bottles for the project have been supplied by local venues Taylor St Quarters, The Loose Goose, The Pier Hotel, and the Yacht Club, as well as some locals who have saved bottles. She has also gained help from a select group of university students, assisting with the design and marketing elements of the project, as well as her usual group of ‘Shed Elves’. The value that Cindy puts on collaborations is evident in her passion for inviting contributions from local creatives. ‘I want people to connect with us and find a way to be a part of our story.’ Cindy sees the collaborative processes as making her work stronger. ‘What I’m doing is bigger than just me. It’s exciting.’

School-age children look forward to days spent playing with friends, swimming at the beach, and eating all of the food in the refrigerator. But what do you do when the luxury of having nothing to do wears off? Fortunately, both visitors to Esperance and those who are enjoying a ‘staycation’ will have plenty of options to choose from.

There are the usual outdoor activities to take part in, such as spending time at the beach, bushwalking, biking, or enjoying the parks and national parks Esperance has available. Here are some other ideas for things to do over the school holidays that will keep the children entertained and make the most of your precious holiday time.

Moving Movies Moving Movies is the ultimate outdoor cinema experience under the stars. Grab a picnic blanket and some snacks, and head down to the Soundshell for some family-friendly classics. This month’s line-up includes Little Mermaid, Cars and Shrek, with gates opening at 6:30 pm (movies start at 7:15 pm). Entry is $10 for adults and $5 for kids.

Escare’s One and Al l Community Program Local Community agency, Escare, is once again running a week of free activities for children from the 13th to the 17th. The little ones can try their hand at Nyungar Dancing, try Ultimate Frisbee, or join in events at the Surf Lifesaving Club, among other options.

Lawn Bowls It’s never too early to start playing lawn balls. Youngins aged 10 years and over can spend the morning on the green at the Esperance Bowling Club on Monday the 20th and 27th of January, from 10am till 12 noon.

Town Tunes The Post Office Square will be humming with music this month featuring giant games for tiny humans. Starting at 12 noon, local performers will be taking over, so bring your lunch and join in on the fun. Town Tunes will be running every Friday lunchtime over the whole month of January.

Local Art

There will be an abundance of markets to choose from over the summer holidays.

The Museum Village Markets will be on Sunday the 5th and 19th as well as a special night market on the 24th.

Featuring local handicrafts, food, coffee, juice, homegrown produce, and much more. On Friday the 24th, join the Twilight Markets from 5pm down at the Museum Village. The Growers Market, now at their latest and greatest location at the Scout Hall, will be on the 11th and 25th, from 9am to 11am. Fill your bag with plenty of locally grown fruit, vegetables and homemade goods.

The Cannery Arts Centre currently has an exhibition running entitled Salvage: Art from the Shed. This community exhibition features works from local artists, with pieces made from scrap metal, and recycled or repurposed materials. The exhibition is running until the 31st and is open from Tuesday through to Sunday each week, 10 am till 4pm on weekdays, and 12 till 4pm on weekends.

Australia Day

While you are in the mood for checking out local art, a visit to Esperance Community Arts is recommended. As well as a variety of art and crafts, the locally made giant insects and wildflowers from the recent wildflower festival are also on display.

Adventureland Park will be brimming with market stalls, live music, food, family activities, and more on the 26th for the Australia Day Family Fun Event. There will be novelty races, a tug of war, as well as citizen awards to be presented. Running from 9am to 2pm, there will be plenty to do and see, so come on down for a look.

The Cannery is also offering a number of Kickarts workshops for children this month, ranging from pottery workshops to sewing, felting, and painting. See the Cannery’s website for more details, and to book your child’s spot. Numbers are limited for each workshop, so it’s advised to get in quick!

This belief in the power of a story to communicate a message is what led Kim to write her third book, The Little Possum Who Looked Up. Telling a young person about the detrimental effects of too much screen time is not necessarily going to have any significant impact. But when seen through the eyes of Pebbles the possum, the message can become much brighter.

Technology is essential to all of Pebbles’ family members. Still, when they look up from their screens, they find realworld connections and become a part of Pebbles’ big adventure.

For her third book, Kim decided to do things a little differently.

Aimed at a younger audience, The Little Possum Who Looked Up is a storybook for children. ‘I liked the idea of slipping a message into something that you’re already doing,’ says Kim. Reading a bedtime story to the children can have a dual purpose. Kim has been pleased with the positive reception for the book, from both parents and teachers alike. The story is easy to read and features more of John’s cute and quirky illustrations.

This was also Kim’s first attempt at writing in rhyme. The story, featuring Pebbles the possum, is a modern-day fable about the importance of engaging with the world around you. Reflecting Kim’s passion for technology, the book acknowledges the importance of different types of technology to our modern lives. The book’s message is indicated in the opening quote, from another literary hero, Albus Dumbledore. ‘It does not do to

Kim has recently taken on the great adventure of moving to Esperance from her home town of Perth.

She and her partner, along with their cats called Hugo and Rosie, and dogs Cedric and Zoe, have called Esperance home for 3 years now. ‘We were ready to leave the city, and we’ve fallen in love with Esperance,’ says Kim. Kim runs her own business, working in the area of digital education, running workshops and creating educational materials. She is continuing to work towards helping people use technology while spreading an online safety message to young people. For 2020, Kim is looking forward to growing her audience and being involved in more collaborative partnerships. Kim’s hope is that young people will be able to harness the incredible power of technology while avoiding all the potential pitfalls. Her sidekicks, Pebbles the possum, and Gabbo the galah, are helping her on this quest.

As a digital technologies educator, Kim has worked in both primary and secondary schools, educating young people about how to use technology safely and effectively.

When she was working in a high school, creating cyber safety presentations for parents and for young people, Kim realised that the messages about online safety were not getting through. ‘I started brainstorming the process and came up with the idea of a storybook for kids,’ says Kim. After some hard work, The Tweeting Galah, Kim’s first book, was born. Kim refers to her first book as ‘fables for the 21st century’. Gabbo the cheeky galah, along with other Australian animals, feature in four short stories, covering topics such as cyberbullying, and online stranger danger. The book was a hit with teachers, who found the short, engaging stories, and the relatable messages easy to incorporate into lessons on technology and cyber safety. Kim followed up The Tweeting Galah with another book of short stories, The Surfing Penguin. Featuring even cuter Australian animals, Kim’s second book covers more messages for young people on how

A year and a half ago I had yet to meet Morgan Kelly, though I knew that she DJ’ed regular gigs in the Pier Hotel’s night club. On occasion I will throw a DJ set on at the end of the line-up, revellers including myself enjoy getting down for a boogie. With an event in the works, I swung Morgan a message to see if she may be keen to finish a night out with some fat beats. Morgan replied, “Do you want my hip hop stuff or a DJ set?”.

On checking out her Instagram profile (go check out @Doctor_Tasty), I found a very well rounded, super confidant, quality wordsmith who had been regularly releasing tracks and content to Instagram and Soundcloud. With local original music of all types being a key focus of Kyza Presents, I was surprised that Dr Tasty had escaped my radar and was quick to offer her a live performance opportunity.

Tasty’s first set would have taken place at The Travellers Inn though due to circumstances outside of our control it was not to eventuate. Tension built for her first local live performance which came to fruition at a classic Esperance Motor Hotel Op Shop Party. Morgan delivered a fiery set whipping the crowd into a frenzy. A commanding stage presence and punchy beats add the liquid to her quick as a whip vocals. Dr Tasty had arrived.

A run of gigs followed, culminating in a stand out performance at Balmy Nights, the event going from a chill sundowner to a bouncing and raucous party.

I have no doubt big things are in store for this cracking Esperance artist.

Where exactly Dr Tasty comes from remains a bit of a mystery, and with a performance at There Goes The Sun just around the corner, it seemed fitting to throw Morgan a few questions.

C o u ld yo u te l l u s the sto ry b e hind yo u ’re sta g e name Dr Ta sty?

Initially, I was DJ Tasty which was my name when I used to DJ parties in school. I continued to use this name when I was DJing at the Pier Hotel Nightclub for about 3 years, but as I transitioned into rapping, I wanted to set myself apart from my DJ persona. Tasty was a name given to me at school, and I’ve kind of just taken that and ran with it.

I used to DJ a lot at the local nightclub, and I would freestyle to myself in the DJ booth where no one could hear me, I just loved writing songs, making beats and producing music for myself. I used to make songs in my room and show my friends what I was doing. They were all so supportive, which was an amazing feeling which inspired me to keep writing and make music for not only myself to enjoy but my friends and other people. I always get videos of my people listening to my songs, or they come up to me in public and say they really like my music which shows how supportive everyone has been. It makes me want to keep writing music.

Drake would be up there as my favourite rapper, though I have a lot of favourite artists I’d love to open for, and honestly, I’m just happy to be able to get on a line-up and have people come to a show.

Most people in Esperance have already been to one or more of my gigs, and they still continue to buy tickets and come support me as well as other artists when I get on a line-up which is way more humbling then opening for any major artist.

Definitely Balmy Nights. It was the perfect set up. A sold-out event and a cracking line up. Was an amazing experience to be a part of and a lot of my friends came down to watch, so it was brilliant to spend it with them and the other performers.

I used to want to move to Perth for my career, but the power of the internet is incredible these days, I can reach more people on my Instagram and Facebook then I would be if I was to move to Perth. Also, I wouldn’t be able to go to Perth, and sell-out shows as we do in Esperance. So other than the lack of studio resources, the best place for my career right now is Esperance.

THE BRIDGE Our first Cannery open mic of the summer series in December was an absolute blast. All up we saw twelve different acts, three of which were artists on the road travelling through Esperance. Over summer, we see an influx of tourists to our town, and it comes as no surprise that there are brilliant musicians amongst them. Another highlight was the jamming aspect between all the local artists, with musicians comfortable to jump up during other sets to add some extra flair to an already epic evening. Our second summer series open mic and the first for 2020 falls on Friday, January 10 kicking off at 5.30pm in the Cannery Arts Centre Courtyard. Special thanks again to local businesses Bob & Jim’s General Store, Castletown Liquor and Liquor Barons Esperance for supporting the series. These events are truly familyfriendly with kids as young as five regularly singing a song or two. Entry is $5 with children free, attendees are welcome to BYO beverages and nibbles.

West Australian act Evergone return to Esperance over two nights at the Pier Hotel. Evergone are an acoustic two-piece based out of Denmark comprising of brothers Mike and Pete Sukys. The lads bring an astounding amount of musicianship combining dual vocals, guitars and percussion to create an immensely full sound for a two-piece. Make sure to catch them as they hit the Pier over two nights on January 10 and 11 from 8.30pm, in the front bar.

Beach Dazed at the Esperance Bay Yacht Club

There Goes The Sun returns for its third consecutive year at The Cannery Arts Centre on Saturday, January 18. An exceptional line-up of local and touring acts ensures there is truly something for everyone. The afternoon begins with three classy acoustic sets, with local Demi Vandenberghe to open, then followed by Margaret River based singer-songwriter Paige Valentine and masterful guitarist James Abberley. Kicking off with high energy rap maestro Dr Tasty, followed by danceable progressive grunge act Dr Yoshiro and Esperance’s hottest new band, Echo Run. Echo Run are absolute fire, combining an infectious groove amidst Jonah Symonds’ slick lyrics.

Legendary local, DJ Ace, returns to the stage to round out what shall be one epic evening. Based in the Cannery Round Garden, with the bar in full swing and tacos and gozlemes made by Rolled With Love. Massive thanks to Esperance Music Supplies for their ongoing support of the Cannery music events. Pink Lake has always been significant to the local Indigenous people, featuring in Dreamtime stories, and as a habitat for wildlife. The first European to ‘discover’ Pink Lake was naturalist Claude Riche, who arrived on the Recherche in 1792, one of the first Europeans to set foot in the area. Riche got lost while exploring, leading to him stumbling across the lake. He was almost left behind by the crew of the Recherche. WA’s first Surveyor-General, John Septimus Roe, named Lake Spencer in 1848, after Sir Richard Spencer, a Magistrate from Albany. Nearby Lake Warden was named after Spencer’s wife, Lady Ann Warden Spencer.

In 1896, E.J. McCarthy arrived in Esperance. The town was beginning to boom due to the gold rush in the Goldfields. McCarthy and his family built the Bijou Theatre and a general store. McCarthy also began mining salt at Lake Spencer, which became known around town as Pink Lake, due to the lake’s colour. The salt was mined by hand, and carted to a salt works behind McCarthy’s landholdings on Dempster Street, between William Street and Taylor Street. McCarthy also took up the lease to mine salt on Middle Island, from Lake Hillier. In the days before Federation, a one-pound duty was charged on salt brought from the Eastern States, and salt was in high demand for preserving meat, along with many other uses.

McCarthy purchased the first internal combustion engine to operate in the Esperance area, a Howard Bedford engine, which was used for crushing the salt taken from Pink Lake. McCarthy’s salt enterprises were taken on by ‘The Standard Salt Co’ of South Australia, and McCarthy was appointed as the manager. Salt was sent via ship to Fremantle and other areas throughout the state. The extraction and processing of salt from the lake became a big industry for the little town, providing employment for many men. Men were paid nine shillings a day to shovel salt, and boys were paid five shillings. The salt operation was processing 40 tonnes of salt a day. A siding built on the Collier Road side of Pink Lake road in 1916 helped with transporting the salt to the port. McCarthy’s son, R.J. McCarthy, who took over running the salt works, described the colour of the lake as being ‘nearly blood-red’ at times.

As well as the industry and employment that grew up around Pink Lake, the Lake also became a cultural hub for town. In very early years, horse racing was held at the lake, on the hard salt crust. The lake was also used as an airstrip for a time. In later years, ‘land yachting’ events also took place at Pink Lake. In 1937, Boswell Synnot took over the salt works at Pink Lake. Synnot was a local businessman who also established the Aerated Water Factory in 1915. Synnot and his sons ran the salt works until 1947, exporting salt throughout the state, and also to New Zealand and Singapore. In 1966, the Shire President, Councillor Patterson, submitted a request to the Geographic Names Committee, resulting in the lake being officially renamed from Lake Spencer to Pink Lake.

In 1980, a biologist from the University of WA confirmed that the pink colouring of Pink Lake was caused by a micro-algae called Dunaliella salina which is able to survive in environments of high salinity due to a high concentration of carotenoids. The high levels of Beta Carotene give the algae it’s distinctive orange-pink colour.

In the 1990s, Pink Lake’s colour was noticeably reduced.

Lake Hillier, on Middle Island, remains a stunning pink colour and is currently growing in popularity as a tourist attraction.

In 1984, the Esperance Shire Council commissioned a report on the environmental impact of salt mining at Pink Lake, amid concerns over the Western Salt Refinery’s plans to increase salt extraction from 1800 tonnes annually to 10,000 tonnes. In 1986, the report was released, stating that salt mining would not harm the lake, but that annual salt production should be limited to 14,000 tonnes per year. As well as its use for human consumption, Pink Lake salt was used for everything from swimming pools, cheese factories, salting sheepskins, and making salt licks for stock. BP Refinery also purchased salt from Pink Lake for use in filtering jet fuel and making chemicals.

Environmental scientist Tilo Massenbauer, who is currently undertaking a study of the lake, estimates that over the years of salt mining, at least 530,000 tonnes of salt were removed from Pink Lake. This amount of salt took an estimated 2,500 years to accumulate in the lake and was removed in just over 100 years of salt mining. The reduction of salt has partly contributed to the lake’s colour loss, along with the rise of groundwater levels in the area, which has a much lower concentration of salt.

The lake remains a significant habitat for birdlife, and other wildlife, as a part of the ecologically important wetland system of the area. Tilo is optimistic that with increased salt levels in the lake, there is still hope that one day, Pink Lake could be pink again.

In the 1960s, the Lister family bought the 1080 hectare lease of Pink Lake. Under the direction of Tony Lister, the family’s company Western Salt Refinery began harvesting salt from Pink Lake in the 1970s. The salt mined from the lake was praised for its purity, being 99.8% pure. In these days, Pink Lake was supplying 98% of all fine salt used in WA. Lister stated that the salt in Pink Lake ‘will last forever’, with estimates that the lake had reserves of around 30 million tonnes of salt.

So why is it essential to have a healthy breakfast?

Breakfast can kick start your metabolism, helping your body to burn calories during the day. Breakfast provides you with energy for the day, especially glucose, which is required for brain function. Skipping breakfast can affect your memory and concentration levels while having a healthy breakfast can improve your mood and lower stress levels.

Eating a nutritious breakfast can also mean you’re less likely to reach for unhealthy snacks when your energy levels dip mid-morning. Breakfast is particularly important for children, with studies showing that children who regularly eat breakfast do better with behaviour and comprehension at school. Breakfast can also provide you with all the beneficial vitamins and nutrients, such as calcium, iron, B vitamins, protein, and fibre.

It’s hard to beat the convenience of a box of cereal or a slice of toast. Cereal can often be high in sugar, and toast doesn’t really offer a lot in the form of nutrients.

A good breakfast will provide protein, which is suitable for sustained energy, fibre, and a range of vitamins and minerals. Here are some other breakfast suggestions that will help you mix it up and try a few new nutritious (and delicious) options.

Chia seeds originated in South America, and were sometimes referred to as ‘the running food’. Runners from the Tarahumara tribe in Mexico, who were renowned for their long-distance running abilities, would eat chia seeds as an energy source. Chia seeds are a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, iron, calcium, protein, and fibre. Chia seeds should be soaked in liquid before they are eaten.

Although it sounds more like a dessert than a healthy breakfast, chia puddings are easy to make and provide a nutritious and filling breakfast. Just mix ¼ of a cup of chia seeds with one cup of milk of your choice – almond milk, coconut milk, or plain old cow’s milk all work fine.

Then add some berries, nuts, or fruit to add flavour, and honey or maple syrup to sweeten. Mix it all up, and refrigerate overnight for a tasty and nutritious breakfast that you can grab ‘n go!

Eggs are another staple breakfast food, for good reason, being high in protein and a good source of a range of different vitamins. On a morning when you have a little more time, Huevos Rancheros is a great breakfast option. This traditional Mexican breakfast has long been popular with hard-working ranch workers, as it provides long-lasting energy.

Huevos Rancheros consists of fried eggs served on lightly fried tortillas, topped with fresh salsa, and usually served with beans and guacamole. The beans are a great source of fibre, making this a filling and delicious breakfast that’s a bit out of the ordinary.

You can find dozens of recipes for Huevos Rancheros with a quick search, or make up your own, with the basic ingredients of tortillas, fried eggs, fresh salsa, and beans. Add some avocado or fresh guacamole for a perfect start to the day.

Oats have long been a breakfast staple, in porridge, muesli, or cereal. Oats are high in dietary fibre, protein, and several b vitamins. They are great for the digestive tract, and their high fibre content means they are a low glycaemic index food. Low GI foods are better for keeping blood sugar levels stable. While there are plenty of ways to make both porridge and muesli much more interesting, one great way to eat oats for breakfast is ‘overnight oats’.

Overnight oats originated as Bircher Muesli, rolled oats mixed with grated apple, milk or yoghurt, and fruit or nuts, left to soak overnight. There are dozens of delicious recipes available for overnight oats – a quick google search will give you plenty to try. Once again, this is an excellent breakfast for busy mornings, as the preparation is done the night before.

QU I NOA PORRI DG E Quinoa has risen in popularity recently, as this ‘superfood’ is an excellent source of protein and a range of vitamins, as well as being a good source of fibre. Quinoa is one of the only plants that is a complete source of protein, as it contains all of the essential amino acids. Quinoa is also gluten-free, so it’s a great option for those avoiding gluten.

Quinoa has been a staple food in South America for thousands of years, only becoming popular in Australia in recent times. While quinoa is not usually eaten for breakfast, it provides a great start to the day. Quinoa can be made into porridge, similar to a regular porridge made from oats. Add cinnamon, maple syrup, vanilla, and chopped nuts to make a delicious twist on regular oatmeal.

Kalgoorlie’s Summer Sunset Concert Series THE CITY OF KALGOORLIE-BOULDER WARMLY WELCOMES THE ESPERANCE COMMUNITY TO OUR CITY FOR A FREE SUMMER SUNSET CONCERT SERIES ON 26 JANUARY, 8 AND 22 FEBRUARY 2020.

Our concerts have hosted many high profile performers such as Pete Murray, Sheppard, and Kingswood, and our 2020 program aims to continue the trend. We proudly present a stellar lineup of performers, including singer-songwriter Diesel, born in Massachusetts, the youngest of seven from a sax-playing father, Mark Lizotte (aka DIESEL) grew up in Australia and in the US.

He formed the band ‘Johnny Diesel & The Injectors’ in 1986 before embarking on a solo career in 1991. In 2011 Diesel celebrated 25 years in the industry. With over 35 singles, 13 albums, six ARIA awards and record sales edging one million, DIESEL is a journeyman of music.

With blues music in his DNA, DIESEL has blended styles to come up with a truly unique sound, punctuated with his distinct guitar playing and vocals.

Last, but far from least, our final concert will host ‘The Diamonds’, featuring an all-star cast with high energy.

The show spans from the original sisters of swing and soul to the legends of Motown and divas of disco and pop; Aretha Franklin, Patty Labelle, Dusty Springfield, The Supremes, Gloria Gaynor, Beyonce and Lady Gaga– to name a few. Billed as “Destiny’s Child meets The Supremes”, this high energy 90-minute extravaganza features of over 50 years of songs such as Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Respect, Rescue Me, Say A Little Prayer, Hot Stuff, It’s Raining Men, I Will Survive, All The Single Ladies, I’m Every Woman, Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves, Born This Way, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, and many more medleys of the biggest female hits the world has ever known.

As well as a free concert, Australia Day celebrations include an impressive fireworks display, not to be missed. Children will be entertained by our various activities, including bouncy castles, which are available within the kid’s zone. Our local craft brewery ‘Beaten Track Brewery’ offer cold beer and cider on tap, within a relaxed licensed area.

Dinner is sorted with delicious options on-site unless you’d like to bring along a picnic. Centennial Park not only provides an idyllic backdrop for our concerts, but it also allows BYO provisions. The Summer Sunset Concert Series caters to young families, couples, shift workers and visitors, with something for everyone.

BUSH BANTER Dune Dwel lers Native dune plants grow throughout our coastline from low beachfront locations to extraordinary clifftops, wherever sand accumulates. This dune vegetation prevents erosion while protecting the inland from storm tides, waves and wind. These coastal plants do it tough growing in some of the most exposed habitats.

One of our most prolific dune dwellers is the Hairy Spinifex (Spinifex hirsutus), this plant binds the dunes together with its sand trapping rhizomes. Amongst the Spinifex, grows a variety of other coastal species including Scaevola crassifolia, Myoporum insulare, Leucophyta brownii, Olearia axilaris and Carpobrotus virescens (also known as pigface).

All are doing a fantastic job of stabilising our dunes.

Another spectacular dune plant is the Nitraria billardierei (also known as nitre bush or dillon bush). You can spot it growing with the Atriplex isatidea (common name coastal saltbush) and Spinifex as you drive onto the beach at Wylie Bay. This plant is highly succulent and has sweet berries making it a popular bush food which can be used in cooking many ways. Most of these species also make excellent garden plants, especially in coastal areas as they are hardy, low maintenance and very drought tolerant.

MIND, BODY & SOUL Flow into 2020 I’m not going to blast you with ‘new year, new me, be better in 2020’ etc. ​T he intention of this article is to help you find some clarity​ around what you want in 2020 and explore why we do and don’t achieve these new year resolutions.

You may have heard the saying that ‘comparison is the thief of joy’. It is also the thief of you achieving your goals. ​O ften we take on others beliefs and make them our own​.

Before you set your vision for the new year, i​s it what you really want? Or is it what’s going to make your parents, friends, partners and colleagues proud? There’s nothing wrong with this, but it is essential to make sure that’s not the sole reason. The stronger your ‘why’ (aka the reasoning behind something), the more motivated you’ll feel.

Don’t take on other peoples stories, especially financial ones​!

Your bestie might need X amount of dollars to be happy. Your family might consider earning X amount a year as successful.

Take the time to sit down and think about what you really want. I​ t’s ok (and totally normal) to not know​ but don’t make up something based on other people’s opinions.

‘It doesn’t matter what you do’ can be a depressing statement. But it’s also really liberating to think that you can do whatever fills your heart with joy. Because at the end of the day, ​t he only person who cares is you. If you’re not sure about what tangible things you’d like to achieve in 2020, then ​f ocus on the feelings you’d like to feel. An example of these could be joy, connection, security, confidence, happiness or self-acceptance. That way, we don’t need to know what it looks like exactly. If it brings us the chosen feelings, for example, joy, then we gain clarity with that opportunity, situation or person, and whether it’s a yes or no.

Makes two medium-size jars

Ingredients 500g zucchini 1 brown onion 2 tbsp salt 2 cups apple cider vinegar 1 cup of sugar 1 ½ tsp dry mustard 1 ½ tsp mustard seeds 1 tsp ground turmeric

Method 1. Wash and trim the zucchini. The zucchini can be cut in different ways to suit your preference. We used a vegetable spiraliser to cut into long, thin slices. If you don’t have a spiraliser, you can use a knife to cut thin round slices.

2. Slice the onion very thinly as well. Combine the zucchini and onions in a large but shallow non-reactive bowl. Add the salt, and toss to distribute. Add a few ice cubes and cold water to cover, then stir to dissolve the salt. Leave for 1 hour. Drain and pat dry.

3. Meanwhile, combine the vinegar, sugar, mustard powder, mustard seeds, and turmeric in a small saucepan and simmer for 3 minutes. Set aside until just warm to the touch.

4. Transfer the zucchini and onion pieces to two mediumsize jars and pour over the cooled brine. Seal tightly and refrigerate for at least a day before serving. They’ll last up to a month in the fridge.
