With harvest operations well underway, farming families, a stack of local businesses and all of their employees are swept up in the biggest operation on our community calendar. It’s an exciting, productive time of year but, of course, the tradeoff is it’s exhausting and our regional arterial roads have a tendency to get absolutely whacked. Given we all want to get through the season safely, it’s worth mentioning how important it is to keep cool on the roads and cooperate with other drivers, as we all navigate a minefield of semitrailers, caravans and the emotional torture that is the final 50kms on your way into Esperance.

The latest exhibition of local superstar Tammy Andrews’ work Treasure Islands opens at Baxter and Maree Gallery on Monday and will run for two weeks. We are here on this earth wedged between two eternities of idleness.

Therefore, there is no excuse for being idle now. The surfer’s life – one of constant change and discovery. The longing to find that one wave that others know nothing of. For some, Esperance is that ‘last frontier’, and perhaps it is what drives people to come to this place and discover a life that is more intrinsic and one that forges a connection with the land. Do we get back to our primitive desires? I do not have the answers, but I know the mentality of the ‘us’ and ‘them’ presides in all surfers. And I can see why people, particularly surfers, are so worried about ‘losing’ this place they call home.

But do we simply live for the experience of nature? Or do we really live for the experience of others? Isn’t the key to life the opportunity to have it shared? Humans are the breath that gives our existence purpose. And if we cannot learn to love another, then I believe that our existence is lost.

Perhaps we surfers need to take whatever comes with a laugh and an opportunity and rely on fellow man to help us through the good and the bad times. Far more stories become of it. I know some of my most memorable surfs haven’t been the moments where I rode the most waves, but rather the opportunity to have a chat, a laugh and share the one wave that was ridden with an outrageously exaggerated call from Tracking the Highline to top it off.

Deep planting of native plants is a new concept that breaks all the rules and contradicts what all gardeners think is the ideal depth to put in plants.

You are going to think it’s crazy that I’m telling you to bury three quarters of the plant, and say that it will rot at the stem and die—but believe me it works.

It is most beneficial when you are planting out of season or doing some environmental restoration, especially in our deep gutless sands.

So why does it work so well?

Firstly, you have less plant above the soil and so it reduces the effects of wind damage. You can also get the root system closer to moisture and, remarkably, roots will start to grow from the buried stem.

If you are planting in warmer weather and dry sand, make a well around the plant that you can fill with water.

I like to water about once a week or fortnight, and this will increase the chance of survival.

You don’t need to constantly water, and this should be only for the first season—after that it shouldn’t need any more watering.

Tammy Andrews - Local Artist What has inspired your latest exhibition?

Treasure Islands showcases a delightful mix of fun and affordable artworks inspired by the past and present tense of the Esperance and surrounding environments.

Hand printed lamps and fabrics, bespoke little items, inky wildflowers and mixed media pieces, to name a few.

Which artists have inspired you most?

I’m a lover of painters who have sensuous brushwork going on, and some of my favourites are European artists Chaim Soutine, Gustav Klimt and Australian artists Hugh Ramsay and Margaret Preston. Lucy Culliton is my lady of the moment!

How does living in Esperance influence your artistic process?

Fortunately for the artist today, if you are able to utilise social media and promotion to your advantage, living and working in an isolated area like Esperance need not be a disadvantage. My work often features my immediate environment and historic stories of earlier times. The scope is rich if you tease it out further than the obvious.

What’s your favourite colour?

My favourite colour is pthalo blue and it features in a lot of my work.

Favourite medium, other than oil paint?

Although oil is my signature medium, I really enjoy working in charcoal and inks. I’ve recently explored using watercolour and have found that to be more challenging than expected.

Any tips for someone who wants to get into painting?

Definitely get yourself along to some classes as real-life feedback can’t be beaten, and read about and explore art and art practices as much as you can digest. The Art Lab workshops at Cannery Arts Centre all look fabulous—my choice would be the life drawing classes.

What’s next for you after the exhibition?

Treasure Islands runs from November 6-19 at Baxter and Maree Gallery. This will be my last Christmas at the space, as I will be moving to a new showroom, combined with our photographic and framing business. Until then, the doors will be open until the end of January.

1. Make patties with mince by simply forming patty shapes out of the mince, season with salt.

2. Thinly slice the red onion and soak in red wine vinegar to make a quick pickle.

3. Thinly slice green apple.

4. Cook patties in pan, adding the blue cheese to the top once they are flipped.

5. Toast buns in the same pan you used to cook the patties.

6. To assemble place green apples, then baby spinach followed by the cheesy patty and the red onion (squeeze some of the vinegar out of the onions before adding it to the burger),.

7. Finally add ketchup to the top bun and you’re done!

Have you ever noticed how often each day you make judgements?

Making judgements is a normal part of life— from choosing what to wear, judging the size of a car parking space or deciding if the road is clear to cross. Our brains are geared for judgement-making because if we didn’t, we wouldn’t survive long out in the world.

However, the good work of the mind comes apart when it turns on us, making all kinds of judgements about ourselves. Instead of asking, ‘What will I wear to work?’ and simply getting dressed, we can hear a voice in our head say, ‘You look so fat in that’ or ‘You’ve worn that 10 times already’.

Self-judgement can spring up so quickly that suddenly we are caught up in an endless story of self-doubt, not only about choosing what to wear but in all aspects of our life. Your judgemental mind loves to tell you how bad/ dumb/stupid/ugly etc. you are.

I can’t promise you there is a permanent solution because the mind does love to focus on the negative. However, with practice, you can start to defuse these thoughts by simply noticing and naming the thought when it comes up. So, instead of getting all caught up in some judgemental thought, here’s what to do.

Notice and name it by saying, ‘I’m having a thought about not being good enough to pass a test’. Take a breath. Return your attention to what you were doing before that thought arose. Remember this takes practice. But one thing is for sure—your mind will provide plenty of opportunities.

The Four Major Lines The Heart Line reflects your emotional engagement and happiness. Long heart lines show contentment, while shorter lines suggest selfishness or indifference. If the line is shallow or short, the person is perhaps easily manipulated by others. Circles represent illness, while breaks symbolise changes in lifestyle.

The Fate Line reflects how external forces influence the person.

Not everyone has a fate line.

If the line is long, even with breaks and changes in directions, it suggests the person is prone to influence by external forces. Saturday night’s Inaugural Esperance Pride Halloween Ball is giving us another fabulous reason to dress up. This 18+ event will include drag performances, short film performances, amateur drag prizes and wood-fired pizzas. Tickets are available online through Trybooking.

There is also a tonne of fun on Saturday for families at the Nulsen in November Family Fun Day at Nulsen Primary School. Activities include a dunking tank, Esperance’s own Ninja Warrior Challenge, a kids water slide, talent quest, drum beat and a fairy party for the under 5s. The Growers and Community Markets will be on as well so there will be plenty of produce, as well as a chance to find out more about local community agencies. It’s all happening this Saturday, November 4 from 8.30am-1pm.

The Esperance RSL will open its hall doors this week, from November 5-7, to showcase an exceptional portrait exhibition that has been travelling the country. The Victoria Cross Portrait Exhibition is a series of portraits depicting the courageous Australians who have been awarded the top military metal, including a portrait of our own VC recipient, Private Leslie “Tom” Starcevich.

Next weekend will see the achievements of 20 nominated finalists highlighted at the Horizon Power Sports Star of the Year Awards at the Civic Centre next Saturday, November 11. The night includes a sports quiz, door prize, the chance to bid on some auction items and special guest big wave surfer Shanan Worall. Tickets are still available from Rigney and Associates, and include a three-course meal for $75, with a $40 option for children.

Cabaret fans will be happy to know legendary performer Geraldine Turner is returning to the stage for the first time in 10 years, celebrating four decades of life in the spotlight. The Civic Centre will present Turner’s Turn next Sunday, November 12. Tickets are $30 and are available from the Shire, Library, Visitor Centre and online at the Shire website.

Steve West and the Billy Baxter Kentet will warm up for their performance at next week’s Blues at Bridgetown festival, with two gigs in Esperance over the coming weekend. The first set will be at the Travellers Inn on Friday, from 7pm, followed by a gig at Taylor St Quarters on Sunday, from 4pm.

Firehorse and Grand Casual are gearing up for their first sets of the summer, performing backto-back as the sun falls at the Cannery Arts Centre courtyard on Saturday, November 18. Both bands have had a break over winter, locking down some new tunes and consolidating lineups.

Grand Casual comprises Matt Cooper, Kyron Smithson and recent addition Joe Franzone, rounding out a cracking three-piece. Firehorse sees Rowan Donovan at the helm, Hutchy on lead guitar, Ross Hodges on the drums and Cooper on bass.

Tickets are required for crew over-15, with anyone under 18 to be accompanied by an adult. The event is BYO food and drinks, presale tickets are $15 for Cannery Arts members and $20 for non-members, with numbers strictly limited. Esperance lions club Fishing clinic Esperance Lions Club will be holding a fishing clinic for children up to the age of 16 years on the first Sunday of each month until the end of 2017. To book, contact Jim Hamilton 0488 720 427.

If you scroll online, it’s not hard to find someone jokingly saying they won’t be swimming while on holiday in Esperance. As lighthearted as they may be, these comments come from a place of worry. In time, this worry will manifest in the minds of our tourists, causing them to rethink Esperance as a holiday destination—and without tourism, many businesses will struggle to survive.

Local groups like the “Ocean Safety & Support” Facebook page are doing their best to calm this concern, but stale old-school comments like ‘stay out of the water if you don’t like it’ or ‘cull them all’ are a hindrance to such a multi-layered issue.

Myself, and many other ocean users, are of the belief that shark numbers are unsustainable.

The potential solution is not popular—but reducing the numbers in a way that also helps the town could be the answer. This could be either through commercial fishing or by purchasing some kind of licence, with the money going back into research, tagging and receiver buoys.

I’m not sure, but to just say, “Stay out of the water” will see the end of the town I call home.

Poverty is like being jailed for a crime you didn’t commit. It is absolutely critical to help those in need. Selfish, wealthy individuals spend their money frivolously and are relishing in a luxurious life, with no empathy and compassion, while there are poor, innocent people relentlessly suffering.

1 in 3 people worldwide are living in poverty.

This means they have limited access to water, education, sanitation and food. We need to stop people from drowning in a terrifying ocean of poverty and end this human tragedy now.

To begin, water is one of the major elements to consider when helping those in need. 663 million people don’t have access to clean, drinking water. This leads to diseases such as cholera. Countless humans are infected by this disease and thoughtless people are not taking action. Every 90 seconds, a child dies from diarrhoea caused by contaminated water. In Asia and Africa, women and children walk on average 5.9 kilometres just to get to water. In addition to collecting water, they are missing out on an education. This has a massive impact on their everyday life and also in the long term.

Education is the best way to escape the cycle of poverty. 190 million people don’t get the right to an education. Going to school gives you a higher chance of getting employed, and having a job means earning money to buy basic living needs. Without an education the chances of breaking out of the cycle of poverty are slim.

Another way to help those in need is through the provision of sanitation and food. 2.6 billion people live without sanitation. This means that these suffering people don’t have access to clean toilets, showers and washing facilities. This is very unhygienic and inhumane. Food is another critical element to consider when helping those in need.

Every minute, 17 people die from hunger and starvation. This suffering occurs while you and I complain about a bruised apple!

Each night, more than 300 million children go to bed starving. This unimaginable and unthinkable tragedy needs to stop.

We need to eradicate this human tragedy and save these blameless, guiltless humans.

Let’s stop them from drinking contaminated water, give them an education, supply them with sanitation and stop them from living a miserable existence. If you donate to a charity, you could change a family’s life. You don’t need a reason to help others. As local West Australian of the Year Anne Carey says, ”Have the courage to be kind”.
