March is somehow is busier than January with sporting events and music gigs in competition for the highest score. Kyza from KyzaPresents recently put on an epic night for the first event in his WA’s Finest series. It was great to see a lot of local punters chucking down shapes on the Cannery d-floor. I think it’s fair to say, we are all thrilled for the next one. It’s hard work pulling off a successful event, big props to Kyza, the Cannery and all sponsors and contributors involved.

twilight yoga festival Some say that yoga is one of the most powerful and quintessential forms of exercise. When practised correctly, yoga can increase your flexibility, strengthen and tone your muscles, balance hormones, calm the mind and reduce stress. And, with yoga becoming as widely appreciated as kale smoothies and kombucha, Twilight Yoga Studio invites you to rock your asana at the Twilight Yoga Festival this March, a gathering of local yoga teachers coming together to share their experience, knowledge and passion with the community.

The festival boasts an eclectic mix of techniques, knowledge, meditation and music.

Held at the Cannery Arts Centre, there will be four rooms running at one time, and each session will run for 45 minutes giving you the opportunity to enjoy the different styles of yoga. The afternoon will run from 1 till 8pm with a sound healing session performed by Nicole Lloyd from Sound Birth at the final hour coinciding with Earth Hour (a movement joined by millions around the world to turn off the lights and speak up why nature matters).

If you’re not an OG yogi, not to worry, you don’t have to be flexible, fit or know the first thing about yoga to attend. Just wear your comfiest clothes for moving and shaking, pack some H2O and most importantly bring your appetite as snacks and smoothies will be provided by smoothie legend Judy’s F & V’s. In addition to classes, there will be a collection of market stalls run by other small holistic businesses showcasing their different products and services.

Some of the great yoga styles on offer include:

Vinyasa Yoga The movement is aligned and linked with the breath, so you move with each inhale and exhale. Vinyasa style classes are a dynamic flow from posture to posture; it is popular in contemporary styles of yoga.

Kundalini A yoga of awareness with mantra (sound vibration), postures (asanas and pranayama (breath). This spiritual Kundalini class follows the Yogi Bhjan method.

Chair Yoga A gentle form of yoga that is practised sitting on a chair, or standing using the chair for support. Often the poses or asanas are adaptions of Hatha yoga poses.

Yin Yoga A slower paced floor based class that mainly works the hips, pelvis, inner thighs and lower spine. These areas are especially rich in connective tissues.

Pilates Pilates is a system of exercises designed to improve physical strength, flexibility and posture with the aim to improve flexibility and stability.

Event organiser and the owner and founder of Twilight Yoga Studio, Melisa Rowe, has been teaching Yoga for about five years, after completing her training in Bali. After hopping from venue to venue, she decided to create her own space, opening the doors for its first class in July 2017, with the aim to build a comfortable and encouraging studio suitable for absolutely all ages. After successful workshops on Woody Island and retreats in Bali, this communityconscious event aims to showcase the many teachers and diverse styles of yoga and pilates available at the studio.

In 1917, a UK politician called Rowland Hunt was arguing against giving women the right to vote. He said, 'There are obvious disadvantages about having women in Parliament. I do not know what is going to be done about their hats. How is a poor little man to get on with a couple of women wearing enormous hats in front of him?'.

Another MP, Frederick Banbury, argued that women’s emotional natures made them unsuitable for making decisions that would affect the nation. 'Women are likely to be affected by gusts and waves of sentiment.'

We’ve come a long way since those days. Women such as Margaret Thatcher, Angela Merkel, and Julia Gillard have broken new ground for women in politics and demonstrated such steady temperaments that poor Banbury would surely be confused. Enormous hats have somehow not even been an issue.

International Women’s Day is on March 8 this year, with the first celebration held back in 1911. It is a global day which celebrates the achievements of women, and how far we have come in achieving equality for the genders.

(Before anyone asks ‘what about the men?’ There is a Men’s day also. It’s on November 19.) We would not have many of the freedoms that we currently have if it weren't for the courage and determination of many women of the past. These days, at least for us in Australia, a woman has opportunities that her ancestors would envy.

While women have historically been excluded from participating in the sciences, many significant scientific discoveries through the years have been made by women. A chemist called Rosalind Franklin made the initial ground-breaking discovery of the structure of DNA, but her colleagues Watson and Crick won a Nobel prize for their research, without crediting Franklin’s contribution. Neuroscientist Candice Pert discovered a receptor that allows opiates to lock into the brain while she was still a graduate student. Her professor took credit for her discovery and won an award for the achievement.

Several African American women such as Katherine Johnson and Mary Jackson calculated trajectories for the early NASA space missions before computers were used. While their stories have now been told in the Hollywood film, Hidden Figures, up until recently their achievements were not widely recognised. ⟶

The Suffragettes were women in England who fought for the right to vote. They led protests and marches and interrupted politicians who were giving speeches. They were some seriously pissed off women. They set churches on fire because the Church of England was against women having the vote. They attacked politicians and even firebombed their houses. They vandalised Oxford Street and chained themselves to Buckingham Palace. When they were arrested and put in jail, they went on hunger strikes.

The Suffragettes stopped their campaign of violence in 1914 when World War 1 broke out and supported the war efforts. In 1918, women in the UK over the age of 30, who owned or occupied property, were finally given the right to vote. Here in Western Australia, women were given the right to vote in 1899. The first female politician ever elected in Australia was also from WA, Edith Cowan, who was elected to state parliament in 1921. Unfortunately, these rights were not extended to all women. Aboriginal people in Australia were not permitted to vote until 1962.

The first Aboriginal woman, Nova Peris, was elected to Federal Parliament in 2013.

I N T E R N ATI ONAL WOM EN’S DAY

Malala Yousafzai became an activist at the age of 12. She lived in Northwest Pakistan, in an area where the Taliban banned girls from attending school. She began to speak out about her experiences, and advocate for girls having the right to an education.

In retaliation, the Taliban attacked a school bus that she was on.

She was shot in the head but survived the attack, and after she recovered, she became an even more passionate activist for girls’ education. It is a significant issue, as two-thirds of the world’s 774 million illiterate people are female. Globally, 31 million primary school-aged girls are not attending school. There are 33 million fewer girls than boys attending primary school.

Here in Esperance, we often celebrate the achievements of

male explorers, pastoralists, and settlers who made our town what it is today. Women from our history are often overlooked. Sarah Brooks, who came to Esperance on foot from Albany, with her mother and brother, was one of the first settlers east of Esperance. She made a significant contribution to classifying the plants of the Esperance area, with two local plants named in her honour.

Caroline Hannett was also one of the first settlers to arrive in the area, travelling on horseback from Northam while pregnant with her first child. She raised eight children, ran her own household as well as helping out at the Dempster Homestead, and also nursed the Aboriginal explorer Tommy Windich in his dying days.

Her ancestors still live in Esperance to this day. Another significant

woman was Julia Sinclair, the first midwife in Esperance. Amongst the business of early life in the small settlement of Esperance, and acting as a nurse and midwife when needed, Julia also raised nine children.

This International Women’s Day, let’s remember the women who have paved the way for us in so many ways. Politicians, scientists, activists, sportspeople, and women in a range of other fields have accomplished incredible things, often with little recognition.

Without them, there is no doubt that our lives would be remarkably different from what they are now.

This March 8, let’s celebrate strong women. Let’s raise our daughters with the courage to change the world, and undoubtedly, they will.

Tying in with the purple theme Esperance Crisis Accommodation Service (ECAS) is starting a local awareness campaign about domestic and family violence. The first promotion involves your wheelie bin- similar to the ‘Neighbourhood Watch’ or ‘Slow Down for our Kids’ stickers, ECAS is taking part in the 2019 Rubbish Bin Campaign by giving away 'Not Now, Not Ever' decals for your bin. Designed in purple and white this promotion is a constant reminder in our streets that violence in our homes, streets and neighbourhoods is unacceptable.

Part Two of the campaign will see a series of bright purple benches (dark violet for those with an artistic inclination) springing up in various locations along the foreshore. The Purple Bench movement began in Canada initiated by the family of Barbara Billing who was sadly murdered in a domestic violence incident. The movement has now gone worldwide, and benches are currently being installed Western Australia wide.

They provide a highly visible place of support and reflection as well as acting as a stark reminder that as a society we can make a difference.

It may come as a shock to some people but the fact is, domestic, and family violence does happen in our town. Local domestic violence services can attest that the problem is widespread and increasing in severity, largely not spoken about and across all levels of society.

Approximately 1 in 6 women and 1 in 19 men have been subjected to physical or sexual violence by a partner in Australia, showing how prevalent the issue really is.

If it hasn’t happened to you, chances are it has happened to someone you are close to even if they haven’t talked about it. In Autsralia, one woman a week is murdered by their current or former partner, and that fact alone is just plain shocking.

It is up to all of us to send a message that we do not tolerate, excuse, condone or accept violence in any form. Everyone deserves the right to feel safe. Get involved with a platform that can create lasting social change and say 'Not Now, Not Ever'. Big trees Big trees get a bad rap because they have a reputation for dropping limbs, pulling up pavement and can cost a lot of money when horizon ask you to get them lopped when they are getting too close to power lines. All these are good reasons to play it safe with smaller more manageable trees.

In saying that there is nothing more magical than a big tree for the kids to climb, birds to nest in or maybe to lie under and enjoy its shade and beauty. Some beautiful trees planted sensibly will provide decades of joy. My absolute favourite is the Corymbia citriodora (lemon scented gum) with its superb white trunk and lemon-scented leaves – its fast growing and is tolerant of a wide range of soil types, could potentially grow to 30 metres with a 25 metre spread so not for a small garden.

Corymbia maculata (spotted gum) is another stately tree with a remarkable mottled coloured trunk. It can grow to 25 metres with a neat canopy making it perfect for an avenue or park.

Give it lots of room!

A popular tree around Esperance that is not so big is the Eucalyptus leucoxylon ( South Australian bluegum). This tree gets to between 10-20 metres and flowers red, pink or yellow has a nice shape with a pale trunk and would be fine in a smaller space. The tree to avoid is the Eucalyptus gomphocelphala (tuart) as it not only gets very tall but has a reputation for dropping limbs and reproducing everywhere.

When planting big trees just be mindful of buildings close by, paving and powerlines, keep the lower limbs trimmed and they will become a beautiful addition to your property.

WA’S Finest kicked off last month with a fantastic workshop presented by Myles Mitchel. Myles brought a plethora of experience to the table in his discussion of performance technique. A great turnout of 11 local attendees representing different age groups and musical backgrounds settled into the Cannery Music room. I think we all went in not knowing quite what to expect and left inspired. Myles kicked off the workshop with the statement that so many consider performance merely as a one-way delivery of energy when the reality is that performance is an interaction, an interaction between the audience, an exchange of ideas and emotions. The conversation that followed was rewarding and set the tone for a fantastic workshop.

Big thanks to Myles Mitchell and special mention to Dudley Newton Optometrists, Elders Insurance and Elpha whose support has allowed all workshops of the WA’s Finest series to remain free to the public.

Preparation for the live event carried on as the workshop ran, and as the hour struck 6pm, punters started to arrive. At this point I was keen to write an event review, though my involvement makes it difficult to remain objective, I asked local Mel Hart to take the reins, following is her account of WA’S Finest Live event Vol.1.

“As soon as we walked through the doors, we were welcomed with the familiar aroma of coconut roti from Esperance Sri Lankan Taste. The evening was just starting to ramp up with a slow trickle of patrons coming through the doors. The first act was to set

the vibe, and Esperance local Campbell Garratt did just that with his mellow acoustic sounds. Myles Mitchell followed with his knee bopping, storytelling lyrics to an increasing crowd. He played a unique style of alternative blues that was engaging and fun to watch! The party atmosphere arrived when Grand Casual took the stage.

Kyza and his improvised energy belting out perfect vocals that encouraged everyone to get up and move.

When Grand Casuals’ set wrapped up, the dance floor was well and truly packed. The crowd stepped outside to catch some fresh air while Blue Child Collective went through their sound checks. Not long after and the sweet, charismatic sounds of Dan from Blue Child Collective came vibrating through the doors. The crowd quickly filled the room once again with Blue Child Collective giving the audience a set well worth their money! “ “This event was a gig for music lovers of all ages. Kyza presents introduced the people of Esperance to some very talented musicians from other regions that complemented our already happening local music scene. Working together alongside the Cannery with its intimate setting and chill vibe, these are events not to be missed.”

The Cannery Arts Centre indeed is a spectacular venue, and it is with the hard work of the staff and volunteers that these events can become a reality. With WA’S Finest Vol.1 in the rear-view mirror, I turn my attention to Vol.2 and 3. I must say I’m super excited and stoked to be able to bring this series of events to life. Surfing, and by association, surfers, were at one stage very undesirable by society at large. Presence not required.

Even employers were susceptible to the dirty, unwashed, unwanted mantra. Lots of cherished memories from those days. Some scary, some funny.

On the way to Wilson's promontory for easter (1969) when we (4 of us) decided to stop for a beer on the way down. We walked into a pub, I was in front and didn't even hesitate.

Told my mates, I was going to keep going out the other door, run to the car and go, fast. In front of me were at least 40 skinheads, we were all corduroy and hair. We just made it to the car when the door from the bar exploded with skinheads.

Another time we met a group of girls at Ocean Grove, from the most upmarket girl's schools in Melbourne. They thought we were great, real rebels. My mate had a strong resemblance to Jesus Christ. He knocked on the door of this mension on Friday night. Door opened, father looked him up and down and promptly shut the door in his face. We thought it was funny. He didn't. A long way from today's sponsored, professional and surfing's general acceptance. Wouldn't have missed those days. I was proud of being considered a useless piece of seaweed.

Things are looking good for autumn surf, but they had to didn't they. Lots more people surfing so lots more surf needed.

esperance aerated waters Esperance Aerated Waters was established in 1912 and produced a variety of soft drinks and cordials until it later closed in 1993. Although, it was not the first drinks company in town. In 1895, as the Gold Rush was causing the population of Esperance to boom, two Germans called Weise and Desterbecque opened a cordial factory on Dempster Street, close to the Bijou Theatre. In 1896, they applied for a brewery licence, and the company was named the ‘Esperance Brewing and Aerated Waters Co’.

The brewery made ‘Esperance Ale’, which was, according to a report in the local paper, ‘equal to that of Perth and Fremantle’. In 1907, with the population of Esperance declining, the Brewery was sold. The building was dismantled and re-erected in Ravensthorpe, which was becoming a big mining town.

In 1915, Boswell and Gertrude opened the Esperance Aerated Water Company. In 1918, when the Victory March paraded through Esperance, the Aerated Water Factory supplied free drinks to everyone, celebrating peace and the return of loved ones who had fought in the war. The Synnots built a shed to house the Aerated Water Factory next to their house at 67 Windich Street. They supplied the town with cordials, soda water, lemonade, a range of soft drinks, and even sparkling apple juice. The small company boasted that they had 55 flavours to choose from. Ron Kendall remembers working there as a young man, washing bottles in two big troughs. He also recalls that they would reuse any bottles except for beer bottles, as long as they were strong enough to withstand the manually operated machine that filled and capped the bottles. The water for the factory was taken from a large well at the back of the factory.

Boswell and Gertrude had three children, Reginald, Francis and Kenneth. As well as the Aerated Water Factory, the family carried on other business ventures, such as running a car dealership that sold Pontiacs, Chevrolets, Maple Leaf Trucks, and Massey-Harris tractors. They mined salt at Pink Lake for a time, and also had a hand in some mining ventures near Coolgardie. Boswell built several buildings around town, including the Rich Meadows School in the Mallee region, and Railway Ticket Office, which is still in use today as The Book Box. When Boswell died in 1947, Reg carried on running the Aerated Water factory, delivering the bottles around town himself. The company carried on operations throughout many fluctuations of Esperance’s population to as low as 250 (in the 1920s) or 700 (in the early 1950s).

The factory continued operating until a few months before Reg’s death in 1993. After that, the shed that housed the factory was demolished, signalling the end of an era for Esperance.

Boswell Synnot was born in St Kilda, Victoria, in 1883. He arrived in Esperance in 1903, one of the leaders on the Government Chemical Laboratories expedition looking for phosphate deposits in the Recherche Archipelago. The trip was disastrous, as their ship, the Sea Queen, was wrecked on Boxer Island.

The 60-foot ketch, which was equipped with a laboratory and photographic room, was utterly lost, but the passengers and crew were all rescued by Esperance locals Wharton White and Willie Dempster, in their boat Little Wonder. Undeterred, Boswell arranged for another ship, also called the Sea Queen, to complete the survey. They discovered phosphate deposits on an island that they named Christmas Island, but which has since been renamed Daw Island. Boswell left the Laboratory and went to work in Kalgoorlie for a while as an assayer before he returned to Esperance to marry Gertrude Daw. They lived in Ravensthorpe, working in the copper mines there until the mines were shut down at the outbreak of the First World War.

composting for beginners Lately, there's been a lot of talk about the importance of beating plastic pollution, so it doesn't end up in our oceans.

And it’s about time. But there’s another important waste stream we interact with every day that also deserves our attention, that is our organic waste. It was once thought by many that the food waste thrown into landfills naturally breaks down, when in fact, it has a terrible effect on the environment. As this rotting food breaks down (very slowly), it releases methane, a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. Many of us toss these things without even thinking about it–we wipe the scraps off our dishes, chuck out spoiled fruit and veg, and throw out mounds of paper towels used to clean up messes.

Start with the right base.

Maintain.

Different types of compost bins can be picked up at any garden store or at Bunnings, but any garbage bin or large bucket with a lid works well too. No matter what you choose, your bin or pile should be placed in an area that is easy for you to access, preferably in at least partialsun (the warmer it is, the faster the contents will break down).

A compost pile does need oxygen to compost and mixing the pile every once in a while will stir things up and add in oxygen to the mix.

Dampening your compost bin is also crucial. You can pre-dampen your browns by using slightly wet cardboard or newspaper, but make sure your compost bin is only damp, not soaking wet.

Add your ingredients.

Firstly, you should line the bottom of your bin with potting soil, this will serve as drainage, give a solid foundation, and adds nutrients to kick-start your batch.

Once you’ve got this down, you should have some rich and healthy soil in a few months or less, depending on the size of your compost. A small pile can take about six months to fully compost.

You can use it in garden beds or on your lawn–it's nearly impossible to add to much compost to your garden, so feel free to go compost-crazy!

Good compost is a delicate balance of carbon and nitrogen, or greens and browns. Greens are your fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, grass clippings and browns are things like leaves, straw and shredded paper.

Layer these as 2 parts brown and 1 part green. Things you should not be composting include meat scraps, dairy products, treated wood, glossy paper and fatty/greasy substances.

It’s trendy, it’s simple and it’s for everyone. Composting is now one of the easiest ways to green our lives. By composting, we can practice environmentalism on a local level and affect our planet on a large scale. Happy Composting!

Someone in the know told me recently that the top half of my body is disconnected with the bottom half. Now, this took some thought. I imagined some computer-trickery where I could be seen walking around in two parts. However, I began to realise that it seems pretty general that most of us go around not noticing that our minds do connect to our bodies.

For example, if you ask somebody how they are feeling, they start telling you what they are thinking. Take the stock-standard answer to how are you today which is ‘good thanks’. ‘Good thanks’ is a thought, not a feeling. If then you were asked where in your body you were feeling good, what would you say? Well, I have a warm feeling around my heart, or the joy I’m feeling is creating a sensation of lightness. If the answer, to the question, is ‘crap’, perhaps you could investigate this a little further and come up with 'I’m experiencing a churning in the pit of my stomach' or 'even I can sense a distinct tightness in my shoulders'.

Imagine being able to tune in and experience how you are truly feeling. Perhaps you could experiment with this a little when you are next asked, 'how are you?' Take a breath, tune in and give an honest answer based on feelings which live inside your body. Even if you don’t verbalise it, you have made a mind/ body connection. Well done.

chili lime chicken salad with mango avocado salsa Ingredients

Method 1. Combine lime juice, olive oil, garlic, salt, chipotle, and 1 tablespoon cilantro in a bowl and stir. Add the chicken breasts and allow to marinate for at least 15 minutes and up to 30 minutes.

2. While the chicken is marinating, prepare the mango avocado salsa by adding the diced mangoes, avocados, red onions, jalapeño, coriander, and 2 tablespoons of lime juice to a bowl. Season with a big pinch of salt and stir to combine.

3. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat, remove chicken from marinade and cook the chicken for 7-11 minutes or until the chicken breast just gently springs back. Remove to a cutting board, let rest for at least 10 minutes before dicing. Add the bell peppers to the pan and sauté for just a minute so the flavours left behind by the chicken get picked up.

4. Place the chopped lettuce in a large bowl, top with the salsa, grilled peppers, and diced chicken.

Serve immediately. You can also make and keep the components separately until ready to serve.
